📷📸📷 from • @geoff.haller Hover in Their Unity 🌕 . . . Back in November during the eclipse I woke up at 4am, walked downtown, and positioned myself right in the middle of the Broad Street bridge. I snapped a few pictures of the blood moon over the "Wings of Progress" on the Times Square building and another photographer pulled up in his car. He took a few of the same pictures, so I wound up choosing to post the one I took of the moon over the Mercury statue instead that morning. Had a really fun weekend in Rochester, N.Y. catching up with old friends and taking photos at some the regions best breweries (and an urban winery!) on behalf of the good folks at Visit Rochester.

The Rochester area has become a great beer travel destination in recent years with new breweries like Sager Brew Works (Rochester), Seven Story (Pittsford) and Other Half (East Bloomfield) opening to great success; urban spots that have been open a little longer, like Swiftwater and Roc Brewing, continuing to grow and improve their offerings; and Rochester veterans like Genesee and Rohrbach’s innovating and collaborating with the community. 

I visited all these and more last weekend and was just super impressed with the overall quality and consistency of the beer they’re putting out. Not to mention the welcoming and helpful staff and ownership I met along the way.

Highlights were (as pictured from top) live music and raspberry blonde ale on the Erie Canal at Seven Story, a brewery tour with Rohrbach’s head brewer Jim McDermott, delicious, frothy pours and great conversation at Roc Brewing, a toast to good health and good grub at Sager Beer Works, IPAs for days on the extensive draft board at Other Half, window seats and wonderful weather at Living Roots Wine & Co. and Swiftwater Brewing and some of the best brews and views in the city courtesy of the Genesee Brewhouse.

Living Roots is Rochester’s first urban winery and an interesting story. Its cofounders, a husband and wife team, source grapes from his homeland, Australia, and hers, the Finger Lakes region, to make a wide range of enchanting wines. Their reclaimed and renovated industrial warehouse setting on the city’s east side is a must visit if you're in town, and also a nice break from all the barley and hops!

If you have not been to Rochester, it is a small, manageable city with smalltown hospitality and charm. This scale makes it easy to get around by Uber or bicycle or your own two feet, which is what I used from my downtown hotel to most of my destinations. But make no mistake this small town has some big city culture, food and drink, so enjoy!

Last month, it seems, was heavy for many people, at least in my own life. There was a day I came home and sat at my desk in silence while the sun went down outside until I was simply sitting in the dark. I didn't notice the change in the light, only that one moment I could see clearly and the next everything was covered in shadows. This pain felt like it didn't belong to me, but the triggers they prompted were fully my own. We aren't normally taught how to process grief, not like we're taught math or english. So we sit in it, sink in it, or suppress it in the hopes that if we hide from it long enough it will ease and it won't hurt the same way it did in the beginning. It doesn't go away though, it changes, and evolves. Some days it will be hard to move. I sit and feel paralyzed and then am angry I did nothing all day. But I have to forgive myself for that and try to be lighter, to know I’m trying my best and sometimes I’ll fall short. Simply existing is enough.
