I think jason is the most casually affectionate of all the batkids? like okay dick is the hugger of the family, sure, but jason is the one who ruffles hair, nudges shoulders, bumps elbows, pats shoulders -- all the little sibling-esque things.

it took him some time to figure out how to take it back, though. the first time tim bumped shoulders with him, the first time stephanie stood on her toes to muss his hair, the first time cass leaned against his arm when they were sitting next to each other, the first time duke nudged him with his elbow for a bad joke, the first time damian (awkwardly) patted his arm, he froze. he didn't know how to respond. because he's used to dick and his big! excitable! hugs! and nothing else from the other bats.

because dick lives in bludhaven. he's not exactly around enough for that. and bruce is *sighs* bruce. setting aside how I feel about him as a parent (*coughs*) he isn't exactly super solid on how to do the whole casual affection thing. he's certainly never done it with any of his kids, much less with the other bats, because he either forgot most of it or didn't learn it or, the secret third thing, he stopped doing it after jason died. because tim is a Professional. and steph and cass and damian and duke take their cues from him and bruce. that's not to say they don't do physical affection, but they don't really do it casually. there's not an in-between. it's either big or it's nothing.

and I think jason taught them how to do physical affection small. how to show that they loved each other when it didn't need to be a grand gesture. how to remind each other, not just prove it to each other.

Revival Rory

I’ve just started reading @rhiawriter ‘s. The Writers (SO GOOD by the way) and it got me thinking about how the revival kind of failed Rory in terms of where she’d be with her career. Not so much just hitting a rut, but ending up in stars hollow for a year.

I think when talking about Rory’s storyline in the revival it’s important to not that ayitl is not just a continuation of Gilmore girls but kind of a fan service (to a certain extent) celebration of the show.

Therefore when writing it they needed a storyline that would include as many of the old characters as possible depending on what actors wanted to come back.

They also needed a way for Rory to be back in stars hollow.

Hence her moving home and having a kind of ‘I don’t know what I’m doing with my life’ crisis storyline instead of being out in the world thriving the way that most of us would envision for her from seeing how talented and adaptable Rory is as a character. (I’m not saying it’s totally out of character for Rory to find herself a bit lost or hitting a rut, it’s just a very specific choice for her character that conveniently puts her back in stars hollow for the duration of ayitl because we need her to be there so the Gilmore girls can talk really fast in person instead of over the phone)

Even in terms of the Logan stuff they obviously wanted the character to be in the show so he needs a reason to be there without making him Rory’s endgame because we don’t want to side overly with one ship - so he and Rory are having an affair, and what are the only circumstances under which Rory would do this? When she’s at rock bottom. (As we’ve seen from the whole dean incident where she was so lonely and heartbroken over Jess that she didn’t think through what she was doing with dean she just wanted to feel loved and important)

Anyway I just think it’s interesting how the nature of the revival impacted Rory’s storyline (as well as others see Luke and Lorelai not being married or having discussed kids in ten years just because we don’t want to throw new kids into the mix and we want a fan service loreluke wedding) and whilst I’ve actually grown to like ayitl for what it is, I do think that it suffers from the constraints of being a revival and I wonder what the writer would have envisioned for Rory at this stage of her life if it weren’t for those constraints.

Bout to make myself look like a real doofus, but when I first got into other people’s Kalluzeb content, I was clueless to the fact that Sasha is a nickname for Alexsandr, so I assumed it was a fanon Lasat word for ‘dear’ or ‘darling’ or something along those lines. I’m pretty sure I didn’t realize I was wrong until I looked on Wookiepedia to see if it was maybe a canon/canon-inspired word, and there was zip on the Lasat language. Then it occurred to me it was probably a nickname so I googled “Is Sasha a nickname for Alexsandr?” and I finally understood.

Anyway, can we come up with a fanon word in Lasat for ‘darling’ or ‘dear’? Because fics that use Mando’a have really spoiled me, there are so many cute pet names and ways of referring to your various people, and I need words like that in Lasat.

(Also, writers who have Zeb call him Sasha, ILY, I will lie down in the street so you don’t have to walk through puddles and ruin your shoes/the hems of your pants if you’re short, I want to give you all of my high-fives and hugs if you don’t mind, it’s literally the cutest softest nickname for him e v e r and it melts me)

Last five things that makes me happy uh~? Okay!

First: Most importantly, there's a couple of people that makes my everyday life a better place, and warm my heart whenever I think about them. At the top of the list are my partner Sun and my boo @davi-doo love you so much TwT (and lately, @zaegreus, you too bring joy to me matie!)

Second: My cat, Oscar, he is a little piece of chaotic shit but GODS I love him; my black cat baby

Third: I just (finally) found an appointment with a psy and I might have meds (for adhd) soon TwT

Fourth: last Saturday, I went on big city with my friends and they gifted me (late) birthday gift at Popmart ™ (both a delightful and dreadful place to take me to jfoierjfa) we also ate fucking good Korean food... friend chicken and cold noodles with pork oh gods..

a lot of the inspiration for YQHBR comes from my personal journey on tumblr over the last 12+ years (and even before then, on other platforms like MySpace & such). i had a bit of a heyday back in 2012-2015 and now i'm in what i like to refer to as my "modern era" (this blog) so i've seen & done a lot. my friends are a huge inspiration for ian's little squad (Cassie, Zoe, Victor, Liv) and all of their interactions/activities. as far as the text posts go, i usually either a) think of "big" posts i've seen in the past and tweak them a little bit to fit the narrative, or b) just drop in a post (or a bit of yearning and/or horny musing) that i'd only ever have the courage to post on one of my lil secret sideblogs, lmao. in regards to the community aspect of things, that's also largely pulled from personal experience! i've come to learn that the formula for building online communities is pretty much the same across the board: ask games and surveys (tag games), picrews (or photo challenges), and personal posts/rants/etc. they manifest differently based on the platform but ultimately it's all the same. so for those, i just imagine what i'd post or what my friends would post if we were in ian or mickey or cassie's shoes and then tweak it to fit the character and story!

as far as the relationship aspect of things, i met my wife here almost ten years ago and we had our own little Moment so i admittedly pull a lot of inspiration from that! they started sending me anons then slid into my DMs and the rest is history, so that aspect of the story is very much pulled from my own life, which i think is super fun!

I feel like sharing some thoughts about the blorbos today.

So, as much as I ship James and Zarina, I have a bit of a hard time imagining them as an actual couple (and not because of the size difference. Like come on, Zarina does so much weird stuff with pixie dust already, it’s not hard to imagine she could find a solution for that too).

I like the idea of them being together, but I don’t like the idea of Zarina being in a romantic relationship with the man who tried to murder her, which is an issue. I like the idea of James having to work a lot during a long time to redeeem himself until Zarina forgives him, but that would make him not-such-a-bad-guy-after-all, and I don’t think James would be as interesting if he ends up being not-such-a-bad-guy-after-all, which is also an issue.

I think I like them more as an “almost”.

Over time, they’d work some things out and stop being enemies. They’d learn to genuinely value and respect each other, and they’d make a good team.

But no matter how well they get along, James would still be a villain, he’d still end up becoming captain Hook. And Zarina would always remember what he’s capable of, and would not fully forgive him for what he did to her, she wouldn’t let her guard down around him.

I like the idea of them understanding each other better than anyone else but I also think that’s precisely why they wouldn’t be happy together.

I prefer thinking they’d have to constantly work to maintain a fragile balance between being close but not too close, keeping their distances but never being out of sight.

I don’t know, there’s just something about characters whose relationship can’t be simply explained as “they’re in love” or “they’re friends”. All you know is they share a very strong bond. Characters who choose to be a part of each other’s life even if it’s hard and if it’s not exactly right for them and if they know they’ll never have the relationship they actually want. Having almost something is the best they can get.

Haru may not have died, but his characterization certainly did ☠️

Ok I know I’ve been a hater of sorts for weeks now but like!!! It’s a frustrating thing!!! I keep rehashing and articulating my problems with it in the hopes I can feel better about it but idk friend!!!

I was having a conversation earlier about how so many of us believe “the swimming anime” would benefit from having less swimming in it, and as wild as that sounds, it makes sense in consideration to how we’ve understood the show and its characters up to this point. (Hold on lemme pull up some of that rant from the DMs)

Isn’t one of the original key tenets of the story that there’s life outside of the pool, and the reason swimming really means something to them in the first place is because of how it honors all that they are and what matters to them in other parts of their life?? Haru has a love for water because engaging with it in different ways (sensory seeking, symbolism, etc) centers him, and it’s such a pervasive and present part of nature that the familiarity of it everywhere helps him better understand and process the world around him. It’s how he ponders the movement of time and how attitude dictates free will: the idea of nature being powerful enough to cause delight or destruction but ultimately if you respect it in your dive forward, the water’s fangs are less scary, and you have the freedom to continue forward with your own level of control within it. He understands his friends better by the ways they engage with water — being scared of the ocean, braving storms and potential drowning repeatedly to learn how to swim, splashing and thrashing during races out of a mix of passion and frustration, almost drowning more than once in those years spent in turmoil… all of these moments and memories reveal vulnerabilities and (malleable, but still present) truths about his friends that help him figure out how to reach those friends and care for them. I digress, we are aware that swimming is important in the story, but so many of the issues we seem to have with canon at this point come from different perspectives as to why. We enjoy Starting Days because Makoto struggles with figuring out his motive/“why” and ultimately arrives at a similar conclusion as a good chunk of the audience: he’s there because he does learn to love swimming, but he’s also there because he loves Haru, and the pool essentially becomes meaningless if either of those tandem truths gets repressed or denied. The show is at its strongest when it works to acknowledge and honor both the sportsmanship/craft they’ve honed from years of dedication to swimming, as well as the the bonds and love that give them purpose.

Different people have talked about feeling disenchanted with the final relay in a way that they never seemed to be with other big relay scenes in the past, and it makes sense — we lose faith in the pool being this place of discovery and connectivity when the story does the disservice of pisspoor conflict-resolution and character erasure outside of it. Like, why does the pool still matter if the characters can’t even talk to each other or tap into the feelings and learned truths they’ve gathered from being vulnerable in the water in the past? Why should I keep putting stock into the “power of friendship” when the story skirts over possible confrontations and heartfelt chances to display the ever-evolving strength of those bonds?

One of the biggest problems with the FS movies, in my opinion, comes from a lack of balance between those two drives. The Haru we know, time and time again, marches forward on this path because he loves swimming and his friends. At some point, the urge to actively show those friendships growing stronger in the storytelling became less of a priority, active moments getting replaced with implied offscreen bonding (when they’re not completely ghosting each other) and flashback montages. The urge to show Haru as a person outside of swimming seems to fade in the narrative, which is sad to recognize when we are being shown so much evidence of this exact imbalance in Haru’s life being what’s hurdling him straight into burnout. Haru being thrown into a storyline where he loses his balance for a bit and spirals can be compelling, like I truly do believe that, but for it to be done well, the narrative has to acknowledge the importance of that balance in the first place. If they’re to insist on an ending where Haru breaks down and doesn’t consider quitting until he’s forced to take a hiatus, and then further insist that whatever happened during that hiatus gave him enough balance and strength to return to the world stage with confidence, the focal point should’ve been on that journey to rebuild Haru’s center. What’s sad is that we know that type of storytelling is possible, because we see it with Sousuke’s different arcs (which could be a whole separate post and conversation), so why can’t we have that with the insisted protagonist of the whole show? Was it a lack of time left to show the details of a messy healing process, or a belief from the writers that those details weren’t that important to show this time around?

I just. Hmm. Big Haru emotions. I’m excited to see fans fill in the gaps themselves by chatting/writing about Haru’s journey after the burnout themselves (the hard conversations and decisions that either lead him back to the world stage in some capacity or break free from the pro circuit entirely), but I wish we got just a smidge more in canon. We could’ve had just a smidge more in canon.

Some latent sense of direction convinces him that they twist and turn, but there’s rarely proper corners. Intersections are even rarer.

The profile that Zayra had compiled narrowed the options down to two places.

They were both bars, both on the seedy side, both fairly well known as the establishment to go to if someone wanted to procure something that wasn’t strictly legal. They were also about as far apart from each other as they could possibly be whilst both remaining on the same planet; one in the towering structure that made up the East Dock, one hidden in the sprawl of the West Dock. And no matter how hard she tried, Zayra could not be in two places at once.
