I'm gonna work on some reishi and shaggy ink cap agar plates today btw, if anyone wants to buy some! I'm not exactly a professional, but I need to make some extra cash, and wild be selling full plates for about $15 + shipping. If anyone wants to know more, dm me! I'll be making some more posts later today!
Macro examination of this beautiful “penis envy” plate! on this plate is a living, unique fungal organism, a multicellular eukaryote that produces mushroom fruit bodies as end stage of its reproductive cycle :) this plate show cases mycelium, or a collection of hyphae from any given fungal spores germination or tissue cloning, that form the mycelium Your eyes see. This colony is a specifically named isolate from multi spore syringe, a Psilocybe Cubensis variety named ‘Penis Envy’ (thanks to its specific fruit morphologies that carry over to subsequent generations of that variety) and a trait of blobbing ‘Dino egg’ fruit bodies for first flush and expected fruit bodies second flush🍄🍄🍄🍄
Sheep blood is added to growth media to enhance the nutrients available for bacterial growth. Laboratory scientists grow various bacteria on this medium as well as numerous other media, in order to help assess infections in humans and animals. The image on the right shows growth of a beta-hemolytic streptococcus. The bacterium has produced a hemolytic compound that has lysed the red blood cells surrounding each colony. The plate was properly streaked to attain isolated colonies. The plate on the left is growing a Staphylococcus species. The plate was streaked too heavily, so isolated colonies were not attained.
‘I streaked the control organisms for you yesterday.’ Lily tried to keep her lips from twitching.
‘Okay?’ James replied, amused. Damn. She’d never been good at keeping a straight face. She rushed off before he could say anything more.
Lily watched as James doubled over in suppressed laughter, hand pressed to his mouth, definitely violating PPE regulations. She grinned, knowing he had found the plate she’d subcultured to spell out “Hey cutie ;)”.
‘So, how long do we pretend we don’t know?’ Sirius muttered to Remus.
‘Just think, if this is how insufferable they are when they’re being subtle…’
‘Forever. Gotcha.’
aaaand some agar plate art for the uncultured (heh) of you below:
Happy Digimon Day/Odaiba Memorial/Whatever you call it! Following on from the mess of coasters last year, I’m trying again. I managed to find a recipe for molds that are reusable, cuz 3D printing a mold did not work very well. But its gelatin, glycerine, and water. I’ll add a link below.
I have no idea where I put the Courage Coaster from last year, so I remade it. Putting mica powder on gelatin is a lot more difficult than plastic, and I don’t like the smudging I added to try and fix that so I’ll probably remake these again. I also forgot to buy resin for this project and have ran out on the fourth/fifth coaster, so I guess it’s a good thing I’m not trying to do a bunch of Digiweek Content again. I think using a small paintbrush worked better, and I’m happier with how Destiny and Miracles came out. Probably won’t have any updates until next week, but glad I finally found a cheap mold material.
I hype myself up for my Asian parent-mandated medical-related course by making art for it apparently
Fun fact the test tube they’re holding contains culture medium known as a butt-slant (the butt part being the lower flat portion). You stick the inoculating loop with the sample in the butt and you drag it out in a zig-zag pattern over the slant as you pull it out. The more you know
(I know you should wear a mask in a bacteriology lab. Shhhh)
i was telling my partner the other day of my ability to get people on board to participate in answering strange fuckin questions, because i think a LOT of people would like to do silly thought experiments but are afraid of looking weird.
but, see, when i, already embracing being a freak, pose such questions, people feel more comfortable because, well, they're already TALKING to a weirdo so they can be weird as well.
