I hope none of you are sleeping on this movie on Netflix: Akelarre, also called Coven. It's a basque film from 2020 about a group of teenage girls being accused of being witches in 1609. Don't worry, it's actually pretty good. None of that American puritan influence, this is a European catholic witch hunt.

The main (right-wing) newspaper in Euskadi wonders why Vaya Semanita was fun and now people criticise Akelarre?

We don't know. But let's wild guess!

Could it be because Vaya Semanita premiered about 25 years ago?

Could it be that they were Basques mocking Basques?

Could it be that Akelarre was created by a Catalan production coompany that wanted a show to take clips out of and spread them on Spanish-speaking sm?

Could it be that the the concept is a Spaniard - the host is just Basque by birthplace, let's not forget - making fun of Basques?

Could it be that Basques being the butt of the joke after 8 apellidos vascos, Mission: Pays Basque, Las brujas de Zugarramurdi, Presunto culpable, Cuerpo de élite, La pequeña Suiza, Allí Abajo - we're sure we're leaving more shows out - is tiresome and saturating??

Nope.

Clearly it's just that Basque people can't laugh at ourselves.

Friendly reminder that when a Basque show was based on Basque people giving their opinions on Spaniards, it was cancelled.

Talking about lack of self-mockery skills.

AKELARRE

Akelarre is the Basque term meaning Witches' Sabbath (the place where witches hold their meetings). Akerra means male goat in the Basque language. Witches' sabbaths were envisioned as presided over by a goat.

The word has been loaned to Castilian Spanish (which uses the spelling Aquelarre). It has been used in Castilian Spanish since the witch trials of the 17th century. The word is most famous as the title of the witchcraft painting by Goya in the Museo del Prado, which depicts witches in the company of a huge male goat.

Spain🇪🇸 Here's everything I found, organized by my favorites…

No 1. Netflix movie Akelarre - Coven (2020) Great and beautiful film, loads of history here⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (see my previous post about the real history behind this film)

No 2. Witches Mountain🏔El Monte de las Brujas (1972) could be a great movie, but the execution is so poor that it ruins the experience. A photographer takes an assignment in the Pyrenees just across the Spanish border, but soon has supernatural encounters (witches). Waiting for the re-make!

No 3. Witching & Bitching - Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (2013) has received a controversial reception, I think it was fun and entertaining. The Caves of Zugarramurdi have a historical connection to the Basque witch trials in Navarra. Zugarramurdi is near what is now the French-Spanish border, where there is also a water stream (Olabidea or Infernuko erreka, "Hell's stream") was said to be the meeting place of the witches.

Perhaps here the most interesting seems to be the story of LaCelestina (1499) and I noticed that it was translated into Finnish in 2019 (going to get the book) 📖 The trials of the Basque witches conducted during the 16th and early 17th centuries had a significant effect on the development of Golden Age Spanish Literature.

Often considered the first European novel, La Celestina was profoundly influential in the development of European prose fiction and is valued by critics today as much for its greatness as literature as for its historical significance. No 4. La Celestina (1996) with Penelope Cruz is good - and very romantic- but not a great movie. I haven’t seen the older versions ( poster below).

No 5. I tried to watch 1984 film Akelarre- mixed documentary & fiction - but I found only few parts with translation, its content did not seem very science-based, but otherwise interesting.

Few witch trials facts from the area of 🇪🇸 :

TheSpanish inquisition rescued countless of ’witches’ from local legal witch processes (Henningsen 1980; Ankarloo & Clark 2002).

Yes, burning at the stake was used as a method of execution in Spain, unlike in most other countries (Levack 1987).

In Catalonia, the Inquisition was less respected and more people died (Ankarloo & Clark 2002).

The general discourse emphasizes the number of women as victims, but there are large regional differences. In Castile 70 % was women, but in in Aragón 70 % was men. (Schulte 2009)

Navarra is famous for the huge number of defendants, but the number of victims sentenced to death remained low due to the Inquisition.

From Zugarramurdi 6 people were burned alive, 4 women & 2 men, 13 died in prison during The Basque Witch Trials (Henningsen 1980)

Probablemente se la inventaron los inquisidores españoles en Zugarramurdi, al enterarse de que en la mitología vasca existía una deidad llamada Akerbeltz (“chivo negro”) y que automáticamente dijeron “Ay, eso es del diablo. Matadlos a todos”… Pero bueno, elegí este tema porque le tengo mucho cariño a la palabra. Me lleva de paseo a la tierra misteriosa y mágica de donde venía mi abuela (aunque mi amona era de una gran ciudad y no hablaba mucho esukera, igual era medio bruja). Il Grande Silenzio - 1968 - Sergio Corbucci

An Italian Western of high quality. One of the most pessimist and nihilistic of the genre (who is already more pessimist than american western).  Not for you if you’re in a bad mood but visually stunning.

Akelarre - 2020 - Pablo Agüero

A witch story in the spanish Basque Country. It follows a group of lively women, living freely while the mens are out in the sea. But the Spanish Inquisition comes to prove they’re all witches. Really great film with amazing cast, great cinematography and one hell of Sabbath.

The Lighthouse - 2019 - Robert Eggers

Two men are stuck on an island, with the duty of guarding a lighthouse. Eggers continues his historic drama like The Witch, but with a more-well paced movie and great themes around the working class doing all the job, and the boss being naked and doing whatever he’s doing in his lighthouse. Dafoe and Pattinson are amazing, and the scenery rocks pretty much everything.

Sympathy fo Mr.Vengeance - 2002 - Park Chan Wook

First film in the “Vengeance Trilogy”, it’s all about people who have nothing and have to make terrible decisions in order to help their loved ones. It’s cruel but never free, just a sad story about the leaves behind. Cinematography rules, cause it’s Park-Chan Wook.

The Devil’s Reject - 2005 - Rob Zombie

A movie about a group of amoral misfits (or psychopath if you prefer) running from the law. It’s uncommon, going with the most horribles killers and watching their run-out, but you end up having sympathy for them. Weird feeling but really cool play of the horror genre.

Mad God - 2021 - Phill Tippet

A visual experience, one crazy adventure in a hellish nightmare, full of weird monsters, anxious moments and amazing scenery.

Mother - 2009 - Bong Joon Ho

Despite being of my favs, Inever saw Mother until now. As always with Bong, we follow the story of low-class woman, trying to save his child from prison. Full of love for his character, always bittersweet in his conclusions, still a lot of nerves against the capitalist society.

Straw Dogs - 1971 - Sam Peckinpah

Peckinpah being visionary stunning in his shooting of violence, with that rare quality of never being in a splendid, romantization depiction of a violent act. Really disturbing at times, anxious, just Mankind being the horrible species he is.

    Arjantinli yönetmen pablo agüro tarafından yönetilen, bir cadı avı hikayesi. Senaryo agüro ve katell guillou tarafından kaleme alınmıştır. Film, 1609 bask bölgesinde geçiyor ve katolik hakimler tarafından cadı oldukları gerekçesiyle tutuklanan 5 genç kadının hikayesini anlatıyor. Filmde kadınlara yönelik ataerkil baskı ve insanlık dışı muamelenin ürkütücü bir hikayesi anlatılıyor. ayrıca farklı lehçelerin nasıl bastırıldığı da gözler önüne seriliyor.

Kardec

 Allan kardec'in hayatı üzerine brezilya yapımı bir film. Gerçek adı hippolyte leon denizard rivail olan ve hayatını değiştirecek bir ruh çağırma seansında bir ruh tarafından önceki yaşamlarından birinde bir druid olduğu, adının da allan kardec olduğu söylenen yazar. Başta inanmadığı ruhlarla iletişim hakkında bu adla bir kitapta yazmış. Kendisi  Deneysel Spiritüalizm'in kurucusu.
