Absolutely yes. When my stupid brain wanted nothing to do with fic in 2020, one of the things I felt bad about was all the unanswered comments. I like to acknowledge anyone who has taken the time to not only read what I’ve written, but also been kind enough to comment. I know it gets said a lot, but even an emoji left on a chapter or one shot genuinely makes my day! I used to get horribly hung up on comments and kudos, and would get a bit upset if something I posted didn’t get much attention. After my break in posting I became far more chilled about it. I primarily write things that I want to read, so as long as I’m happy with a fic, that’s all that matters. Comments and kudos are just icing on the AO3 cake.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don’t do unresolved angst! The closest I’ve come is ‘Parting is such sweet sorrow’ because it was for Berena Appreciation Week 2018, and the prompt was angst. It was my take on Serena, in Nairobi, receiving the call from Hanssen, asking her to return to Holby. In my mind, we knew it didn’t spell the end of her relationship with Bernie, so the sad and mildly angsty ending didn’t count.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Everything? 😆
Seriously though, probably ‘Running Away (together)’ because it ended up being the start of the series that saw Serena and Bernie getting married and properly settling down together.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
I think I had one fic get a couple of 💩 comments, but that was when there was a period where there was a contingent of Serena haters who just had to make themselves known. If I recall correctly, I basically replied telling them to fuck off (in the hope they’d used a legit email address and would see my responses!) then deleted the comments…
9. Do you write smut?
I have done. I find it very, very difficult though, and essentially used my first venture into smut as a template for the second and third. It does NOT come easily (ahem!)
10. Do you write crossovers?
Nope. Again, I can’t imagine feeling like I could ‘hear’ any other characters well enough.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I’m aware of. I can’t imagine anything I’ve written would be a big enough target for anyone to bother.

My desert island fic - ‘Bernie Wolfe-Born Survivor’ I desperately want it written, but can’t imagine my brain cooperating, sadly. It would need to be a multi-chapter, and I struggled hard enough to squeeze 2834 words out of my brain this year!

Dialogue, I think. My ladies do love to talk! Quite a few people also seem to comment on the humour in my fics, so that as well I guess.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Smut.
Plus just writing anything at all these days. 😕
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Erm… as in including lines in a different language to the main body of the story? It can be frustrating, but if you’re on AO3 and using Chrome (yes, yes I know!) you can just highlight the text and get it translated easily enough. Not so much on FFnet of course…

Posted - Berena are my one and only, my OTP…
However, I did dip my toe, many years ago, into trying to write a Bad Girls fic. I didn’t get far at all before it stalled. It only took me nearly twenty years to try again!
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
I honestly like everything I’ve written. I wouldn’t have posted it otherwise!
I think I’m most proud of good old Dead Ed (aka Murder on the streets of Holby) though. As well as being my longest, it also has the most complex storyline and took a fair amount of planning out. From someone who very much winged most things up until that point, it was a bit daunting. Plus the worry that people might find the reveal of the murderer disappointing was a bit stressful, I must admit!

The Fallout “commentary” (inner thoughts, NOT a review or critic)
Day one: Dude, The Fallout is soo confusing, like how did you guys manage? I can’t make up some of the scenes in my head, it’s so vague and then so specfic and jumpy. I’ve never read something like it.
It’s so hard to keep track of the days (do they mean anything besides just to count them?), i have to keep looking back. And the narrative - my poor non-native english brain is finding it hard to comprehend…
But i can’t.stop.reading!
It’s so riddling I keep coming back to it for more.
79 pages in- did anyone find it as confusing?
Day two: i take it back, it just got so fucking goooood ~ who cares about the day count lol
Day four: ok this is becoming a post about the wild journey that The Fallout has become for me; i’m about 100 pages in, and my god, it’s still confusing, but it’s got me tight by the ovaries. Jesus christ take the wheel… will update later
Day six: so i’m about 250 pages in and it’s becoming more like a proper thing, like more of a steady narration and i’m loving it, i’m not as lost with descriptions, only when they go on missions, it’s still a bit blurry in my imagination but it’s still great. So spoiler: the war has been “over” for about 30 or so pages, but not really? I’m curious to see what happens? Also, spoiler again: Neville’s news broke my heart :( will update soon!
Day seven: i’m 309 pages in and i have to say i think i have reached a wall… so, this is NOT a post about me critizicing this amazing piece of work, ‘cause lord knows i would never be able to write something like this. It’s just my inner thought while in this Fallout ride I’m on… That being said, i think it could’ve ended about 50 or 70 pages ago… i’m not sure what’s next after (SPOILER) Ron’s back… we’ve had two big climaxes (the war and then Ron) but now i’m not sure there’s something that could amount to that? Don’t get me wrong, i’m looking forward to reading the 180 or so pages left, but right know i feel the storyline is a bit without direction and d and h’s relationship should have advanced a bit more emotionally? (To my personal liking, not sayin it would be “the best for the story” bc it’s not my story) but like, them not communicating pretty much at all is giving me a headache, and a heartache… like, please say something! I can’t handle the hot and cold thing for much longer and don’t want to feel like it’s just dragging and losing momentum… anyways, of course i’m updating and going straight back to reading, it’s 1:33 a.m.
Day nine: i’m finished. It’s really over… 485 pages later, my eye sight definitely worse off after countless hours of reading. I have to say, i didn’t expect it turning out the way it did, and idk why bc it kind of was a lot of the same for the last 185 pages… i really wanted to absolutely obssess over it but i found myself thinking “now something big is going to happen” and then 30 pages later: “ok now something big is going to happen” and then i reached page 470 and… nothing really. I don’t really know how to feel… again, this is not me throwing shade, or criticizing or anything like that, it’s just my experience as a reader. So yeah, of course my hat is off to the amazing effort and talent of the author, there’s a reason this fic is regarded as one of the dramione fics ppl need to read. It just lacked a few things in my personal opinion and preference, which is worth nothing in the end lol. I would still reccommend it to anyone! And i guess that, to finish off, and for my personal record, i would give it a solid 4 out of 5 rating.
I’m having lots of fun “journaling” about my reading experience, i think i might continue, if only for my own entertainment and to look back :)

The Mushroom Discourse
This is what I get for having stupid questions. Before I jump into the clusterfuck this post is going to be, let me just explain how I got there in the first place: It's fall and mushrooms are just *everywhere* currently and it came to make me wonder about the phallic shape some of them have and how curious it was that this trait hadn't been used by the Ancients in some way.
And this simple observation led me down a deep rabbithole, because clearly no one gives a fuck about the history of mushrooms in the ancient world, but everybody cares about psychoactive shrooms. As a result of that, there's very little material about mushrooms in a typical ancient Greek's life, but A LOT of speculative material from a particular side of academia that is, for the most part, not really taken seriously by most scholars.
If this is so fringe, then why mention it at all? Well, because, like with other questionable content *cough cough Robert Graves cough*, I see it being taken by pagans as fact and not being critical about it. I could be writing an actual useful post but here I am, I guess.
The Shroom Theory
What I jokingly call the "shroom theory" refers to the idea held by a handful of scholars, that the secret of the Ancient Mysteries are psychoactive mushrooms. Initially, what sparked the idea is an interpretation of the Pharsalos stele, sometimes called “The Exaltation of the Flower”, dated somewhere between 470 and 460 BC.
When the stele was discovered in 1863, scholars have interpreted the two women as being Persephone and Demeter holding flowers (poppies or roses). Recently, the interpretation of those two women being Demeter and Persephone has been re-evalued and it's more likely that the stele represents mortal women, not goddesses.
In 1911, Rufus B. Richardson was the first to suggest that those looked like mushrooms, without making any further comment. It is only in 1955 that writer Robert Graves suggested the use of mushrooms for their entheogenic properties as part of the Eleusinian mysteries. As I've stated in a post earlier this week, Graves' hypothesis know little popularity amongst historians. For the most part, this trend checks out when looking at the scholars who did stand by this theory: ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, psychedelics researcher Giorgio Samorini, ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson, chemist Albert Hofmann... The only actual classicist still alive today to support this theory is Carl A. P. Ruck.
Carl Ruck: a look into the theories
In all honesty, the summary of the idea he shares with Wasson is basically, and I quote "entheogens were the origin of religion". I think it's important to point this out. Wasson and Ruck especially, do not just think that entheogens have something to do with greek Religion particularly, they think religious experience at its core was created from the hallucinogenic properties of mushrooms. And so, in Ruck's bibliography, you will see him go over the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Dionysiac Mysteries, Mithriasm, Renaissance art, and the fucking forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden because at this point why the fuck not, I guess.
If there were any kind of credibility to his theories, it's definitely where he lost it. Even in his more recent articles, like the one from 2016, there are so many mistakes and jumps to conclusion that you do wonder if he wrote it high, because it sure looks like it. For example, when mentionning restina (the Greek wine with pine resin, that I have written about in the past), he completely fails to mention pine resin at all. Instead, the citation goes this way:
"Since the alcohol produced by natural fermentation is limited to around 13%, after which concentration the aqueous environment becomes too inhospitable for continued growth of the fermenting yeasts, the toxicity of the wine was due to these fortifying herbal additives. These included even deadly poisons like hemlock in sub-lethal dosages and venom milked from serpents. This tradition survives in the modern Greek folk wine of retsina and in the demotic naming of the drink not ‘wine’ ([w]oínos), but the ‘mix’ (krasi)."
That is an extremely misleading statement. Because Ruck fails at giving a proper description of what retsina is, you are led to believe retsina is composed of either a "fortifying herbal additive" or "deadly poisons". Except, retsina is no stronger than a regular wine, and pine resin isn't a dangerous substance.
This is a detail, but it shows how Ruck words his work in a way that voluntarily omits information to serve his argumentation. To conclude this long rant, I will only add that his bibliography is also concerning, as he obviously doesn't have a lot of authors to choose from to support his theories, and so, he has the tendency to either cite himself, or himself and his co-authors.
Last words
This is not to say that psychoactives do not or did not have any place in ancient societies, or even ancient religions. There might be a layer of truth somewhere in all this, but Ruck et al. go too far in their speculations. We simply do not have enough evidence to make claims of this nature. Don’t just believe them blindy. Keep in mind that I’ve summarized a lot, there’s much more that is just so far-fetched that it’s just ???

First ofall – thank you! I’m so flattered (and a little surprised because I alwayshave a feeling that I struggle with lineart way too much XD). I’ll try to answerthe best I can.
DISCLAIMER:Everything written below is based only on my personal, amateur experience +various tips and tutorial I’ve seen over the years. I don’t claim this is the“right” way to do lineart, it’s just how I do it and what I find helpful.
Please prepare for a long “Rainhowls tries to explain things” post under the cut.
Ok, let’sbegin.
Tools
I use Wacom Bamboo Pen CTL-470 and Krita software (which is GREAT and FREEand I recommend this program with all my heart).
Here is a legit graphical representation of what makes my lineart.
Nice and clear. And now let’s get into details.
1. Cheating
No, I don’tmean paying someone else to do your lineart and claiming it as your own. I meanusing the powers of digital painting for your advantage. So, let’s begin. As amodel, we’ll use Templar kun from the recent lineart I was making.
Use the simpleround brush with enabled pressure size but withoutpressure opacity. My two fav brushes for lineart are Ink brush 25 andInk-3G pen. The first one is better to imitate traditional brush and ink butthe second one is slightly easier to control.
Now, lookat the bottom left corner of the screen, where the tools options are – you’llsee the brush smoothing is set to Basic.
It is a default setting and it works alrightwith most of the short lines and small details (like Templar kun’s beltbuckles). Also good for eyes and other face features – IMO these little messylines make a face more interesting.
Let’schange the settings into Stabilizer.
Stabilizeris great for lineart because it „forgives” the small, unwanted hand movements thatoften make lines messy. You have a lot more control over the line and thissetting is great to draw things like hair and fabric. Templar kun’s helmet androbes were made with Stabilizer.
Butsometimes even the Stabilizer isn’t enough – we want a geometrical shape. Forthat we want to choose Bezier Curve Tool.
Simply byclicking, you show where the edges are and voila! You can also make large, softcurves with that tool (although it’s tricky – I personally prefer Stabilizer).I used Bezier Curve to draw most lines in the pauldrons and the shield.
Important – don’t overuse this tool! If too many of yourlines look perfectly straight it can make your drawing look stiff andunnatural.
- Beforedrawing lineart make your sketch twice as big as you’ve planned in on the finalpicture. It will make small mistakes almost invisible. Templar kun is already abackground character, so let’s use Aveline here.
She looksquite ok.
But let’ssee her on 100% size and try not to cringe.
BUT! All thesesmall mistakes are here and I don’t have to care because human eye won’t catchit in a final drawing anyway! :D
- Play withline weight. Objects that are smooth, thin or far away will look good with thinlines, objects on the foreground can have bolder lines.
Templar kunis a background character so I didn’t bother with line weight. But KnightCaptain Cullen is much closer to the viewer and deserves a better treatment.That’s why I’ve tried to make his lines more interesting.
- Don’t work only onone layer when drawing more complicated elements of your lineart. I usuallydraw hair on a different layer than face and small details on different layerthan bigger shapes. It helps when you need to erase something – like parts ofthe face covered by hair – and don’t want to worry about your beautiful, smoothlines. When you are completely satisfied you can merge all the layers into one.
2. Practice
I know,everyone is sick of this advice but, well, it’s kinda true? Draw some lines,circles, get used to the pen pressure, experiment with different settings ofStabilizer to find the one that suits you best.
3. Time
Now, nomatter how good you are, clean lineart requires time and patience. You probablywant to make yourself a coffee and choose a 2 hour long song playlist inadvance.
- Don’tstart your lineart over a messy sketch. Sketching is fun because you usually usemany lines instead of one to convey a certain shape. In lineart, you have toconvey the same effect but with only one line. It’s often hard to find outwhich one would be the best and that’s why we often like our messy sketches alot more that inked final product.
So, let’slook at my first sketch of Templar kun.
I have apose, I know where the arms are, I know he has a sword and a shield but when itcame to details I was like „meh, it’s just a sketch”.
If I wastrying to put a lineart on this, even with a ton of references under my nose, Iwould be confused as hell. So – I need to draw another sketch. This timewithout a „meh”
Here it is.
The majorshapes of the armour are here, the lines are quite clear. We still don’t havethings like fabric prints or belt buckles but these minor details can be easilyadded.
Sometimesyou need only two sketches. Sometimes three or more. It will take time to drawthem but in the end it makes your lineart look more deliberate.
- Ctrl+Z isyour friend. Really. You’re going to treat almost all your lines with thosekeys. Several times. At best.
Remember,lines should be drawn in single, quick movements. The tricks I’ve mentionedearlier are useful, especially in simple, large shapes, but they won’t domiracles. You have to keep drawing this one damn perfect line until you’resatisfied.
I’vesketched this little heart and tried to make a lineart in 2 smooth movements.
First try.
Ugh.
Second try.
Fuck.
Third try.
Ok I guess.
Basically,smashing Ctrl+Z like a madman also takes time.
4. Slavicwitchcraft
Put warmslippers on your feet, get a bowl of pierogi and play the Witcher 3 OST – themagic will fall on you.

I am trapped in an impossible situation
My monthly income is approximately $2,500. That seems like a nice and big chunk of change, and even after taxes (about $390-400/mo.) still leaves me with $2,110/mo.
But then I have a child support payment of nearly $650. That leaves me with $1,460 per month.
Per the divorce decree, I need to cover my daughter’s various insurances as well (medical, dental, vision). She’s already covered by AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, or “Access”), but apparently that doesn’t qualify to meet the mandate of covering her insurance, so I need to get a much more expensive health plan than I can currently afford. Currently that comes out to $470/mo., and next year it’s going to be $520/mo. This knocks down my available monthly income to $990.
I’m currently living in a 2-bedroom apartment that’s actually cheaper to live in than the vast majority of 1-bedroom apartments in Phoenix at $530/mo. That’s $460 left per month.
My auto insurance is as low as I can make it at $75/mo. My cell phone (no land line) comes to about $60-80/mo. depending on whether my data cap is exceeded, groceries come out to about $250/mo. (Gotta eat and feed the kiddo and cats) If you’re not keeping track of the math, that leaves me with $75 per month.
Wanna guess how much gas costs to get to that job that earns me approx. $2,500/mo.? $130 per month.
That’s right, I’ve been operating on a deficit of -$55 per month. I’ve stripped my savings completely, worked as much overtime as the job will offer, and even tried offering products for sale through legal and reputable vendors. If I lose the apartment, I may have to take the cats to shelters, which would break my daughter’s heart given that all three are rescues that she personally picked out and has been helping me to take care of.

I’ve said this before but I’ll say it a thousand times: you’re allowed to not find someone attractive, but we should also think about how marriage, dating, and sex do not occur in a vacuum. We are not immune to being influenced by societal beauty standards, which are oppressive and based on white supremacy and racism (and particularly antiblackness), colourism, fatphobia, antisemitism, transphobia (particularly transmisogyny), and other oppressions. It’s necessary and absolutely worth it to occasionally think about WHY you don’t find someone attractive instead of just vehemently defending your right to call someone ugly and treat them like dirt because you are personally not attracted to them.

I really hate what people have done to discussions of so called “problematic” media because these discussions really just lack compassion and it’s awful. Like YES everything is some degree of “problematic” because We Live In A Society, but it feels like a lot of people just apply the media critique equivalent of “no ethical consumption under capitalism” and refuse to go any further than that. They go about their day continuing to enjoy things like Hetalia and Attack On Titan despite the absolute scores of Jewish people and victims of Japanese imperialism pleading with us to stop supporting it.
Like, sometimes enjoying a thing, no matter how much you like it, will harm other people, and will line the pockets of creators who have demonstrated time and again that they are horrible people who do not care about others, and will continue to harm them if it means making even more money. Just...please use some compassion. Stop thinking about your own immediate enjoyment of things and think of others for once.
I know that no one can physically stop you from enjoying these things but know that if you choose to enjoy them then people, especially those primarily hurt, are well within their rights to avoid you and to tell others to avoid you. That’s not call out culture gone awry; that’s people creating and enforcing their own boundaries.

People who think that “this piece of media has gay characters” is an adequate summary of a work with no attempt at saying anything of substance do the same thing with race like it’s pathetic.
“This media has a POC character” first of all POC is a noun and not an adjective, and secondly, that tells me nothing! What is the plot? What is the genre? I need more than “it has POC characters :)” because white people’s track record of recommending works with characters of colour is abysmal

One of the things that really gets me about ao3 defenders is that not only will they proudly donate to ao3 and bypass the donations posts of poor people in need, but they will also, quite proudly, go into the inboxes of people with active donation posts and actually TAUNT them with their decision to give to ao3 instead, will literally tell people “I see you need financial assistance but you hate ao3 because it houses cp and stuff so I’m gonna donate to them over you! Gotcha!” like...it’s actually so evil and I hate all of you

Is there anything you dislike about figure skating? What bugs you, if anything?
Thanks for asking! (Sorry for the delay it’s because this is a long post incoming)
There is a bit! Mostly it’s not necessarily an active dislike, just parts I don’t like or I think could be better.
First: expense. This sport is really, really freakin’ expensive, even if you aren’t a “serious” skater. I’ll need new boots this year and the pair I’m looking at are like $470 - and that’s not even the most expensive pair out there for the highest levels. I have rent and bills to pay. $470 is like half a year’s electricity for me. Or half a year’s car registration. Oh and because I’m changing brands and the sole is different shaped I’ll need new blades, too, that are a quarter-inch shorter. Another $270.
Then there’s coaching and ice time. And for the higher-level skaters, off-ice classes. I save money by sewing most of my own costumes but that’s not an option for everybody. Tights are a consumable item. I’m probably spending just over $2000 a year on my own skating and that’s excluding competitions - and also excluding the cost of attending events as an official, which can really add up too! (Seriously, being a judge/official is also very expensive!) And at the lower levels, no-one pays the judges’ expenses.
The problem is that there’s no help for this until you’ve started producing results - and it’s hard to get good enough to produce results without the investment. I wonder how many talented skaters, or how many good judges/officials, have been lost to the sport because of the expense. Skating has to start trying to figure out ways to make this work because as people have less and less to spend, this is the sort of stuff that gets cut. Four years ago I was on the verge of leaving the sport because I could no longer afford the ice time, let alone lessons. I won’t be the only one.
The biggest problem with this problem is: how do you fix it? There’s no easy answer to that question.
Second: the sport’s image. How is figure skating portrayed in the media/popular culture? Until 2016, predominantly in feel-good type movies where some girl with no background in her late teens or older suddenly, improbably has a chance to take lessons and magically becomes an Olympic contender. In western media it’s portrayed as a “woman’s sport” and the men who compete in singles are viewed with ridiculous suspicion. It’s portrayed as fluffy and pretty and sparkly.
Skating doesn’t help itself with this image. Look at the USFS, always constantly looking for their latest pretty blonde “ice princess” - and after breaking Gracie Gold they have learned absolutely frigging nothing because the same treatment has already started with Bradie Tennell. Good luck, Bradie. You’ll need it on the days things don’t go so well. Don’t let them send you to Frank Carroll.
And then there’s the whack. The fucking twenty four year old whack. Can we please, please SHUT UP ABOUT THE WHACK. It happened twenty four years ago. Skating has had plenty of other good stories since then. Why can’t we move on to something better? Or at least more recent? But no, apparently that’s the only skating story ever worth making into a movie. (Frankly, I’d pay good money to see a dramatic portrayal of the Plushenko/Yagudin rivalry and how it changed the sport, but that’s just me.)
And then came the anime. And that was a pretty good portrayal in many senses - they didn’t hide how long and how hard the skaters were training, or that it wasn’t always perfect, or that it was very difficult. But there were parts that didn’t help. Viktor’s gross comments about Yuuri’s weight. The absurd scoring system that seemed to change episode to episode. And above all: the fandom that seemed to think it was okay to call real-life skaters by the names of characters and make up rules or their own interpretations thereof.
This one has a fairly simple fix. It involves the feds getting PR-heavy and portraying the skaters as real athletes. Instead of doing a fluff piece on the whack for the hundredth time, why not a documentary following some of the men around as they prepare for and compete in the season? Instead of having a catty bitch like Johnny Weir doing the commentary and reinforcing pretty much every negative stereotype about our sport, why not get more commentators like Ted Barton, John Coughlin, Charlie White?
The other part of the sport’s image is the portrayal of the intensely political scene with the judges swapping votes etc. The fans themselves don’t help this, but nor do the feds. The major injustice is the casting of Russia as the “only” fed who manipulates scores - oh please! The main thing is that all the feds need to pull their heads out of their butts and realise score manipulation will eventually do more harm than good.
Third: the scoring system. Now, we gotta be upfront about this! THE IJS IS A MILLION BILLION TIMES BETTER THAN 6.0!!! As a skater I can look at an IJS protocol and get instant feedback. 6.0 gives you nothing.
That doesn’t mean the IJS is perfect. No - far from it. Falls aren’t punished harshly enough, tech panels aren’t strict enough on under-rotations, downgrades and edges, and PCS is out of control and no longer accurately reflects a skater’s ability. An overhaul of the IJS is needed, but that will take some time and the desire to do so will need to be there.
Fourth: the power imbalance. The power in skating is inherently with the “big” countries - the US, Canada, Russia, Japan, China, even France to an extent. They have a hand in everything, from the way the scoring system is structured and implemented to the assignments at various international events. It means that if you are a skater or team from a country with minimal power, you are at an instant disadvantage. Heck, there’s a reason it’s sometimes called “little country PCS”! And getting assignments (and therefore ranking points) is extremely difficult as a result. (Look at what happened to Alexandrovskaya/Windsor, who were supposed to be on the Senior GP this season.)
Anyway, these are just a few things, and sometimes I hate them, and sometimes I don’t, and mostly I love skating anyway.

Warning(s): A little bit of swearing, my amateur writing skills, mistakes (even tho i did try my best to edit this), some fluff???
A/N: i’m finally posting the Tom Holland imagine that I promised you guys when I hit 400 followers! *nervously chuckles as i look at my 470 followers* this is the first time I’ve written a long Tom Holland imagine so please don’t attack me if this is bad. also, this imagine isn’t gender specific so y’all can go wild with your imaginations! (im also living for the possibility of tom being bi after that japanese sm:h interview) this imagine turned out to be a lot longer than I anticipated.. but I hope you all enjoy it and don’t be afraid to give me (CONSTRUCTIVE) feedback or whatnot ❤️

The water looked deep and inviting. But you knew you weren’t getting in there before pushing Tom in first.
“Thomas!” you cried. “Hurry up you twat! It shouldn’t take you this long to put on the swimwear equivalent of shorts.”
You stood at the edge of your pool with your hand on your left hip looking back at the house. In the past ten minutes, you’d sat down on the poolside lounger and gotten up to walk to the pool about five times. Today was particularly hot and as you had yet to enter the pool, you knew your face was sporting the shade of a ripe tomato.
“They’re called board shorts, darling,” Tom replied teasingly from the bathroom window. “And I’ll be down in a minute. I just need to... fix something.”
“I was just trying to prove a point! And what are you trying to fix? Your sad lack of lips?”
“Fuck you, (Y/N), I heard that!” You snorted.
Seeing as Tom had previously said he’d be down in a minute a minute ago you decided that you would be better off laying on the lounger as you waited. The summer sun was relentless and even under the patio umbrella, you had to squint wherever you looked as the sunlight bounced off every surface it could reach. You picked up your sunglasses from the small poolside table and put them on, relieving your eyes, and relaxed into your seat, enjoying the feel of the cool breeze against your skin and the sound of swaying trees in the distance.
The idea of taking a nap was extremely inviting and you let your eyes close and your mind doze off as you happily imagined the look on Tom’s face when you were going to push him into the pool later that day.
Little did you know that Tom had a sneaky idea up his sleeve as well, though it was a lot harder to conceal. Tom had been hoping to take you by surprise as you were still napping but due to his noisy exit, he was going to have to improvise.
You heard the back door sliding open and saw Tom coming out with one of his arms behind his back. Something was up.
Tom paused momentarily in front of the door. Tom was appropriately shirtless on this thirty-degree day and your eyes naturally trailed down to his abdomen. It didn’t matter how many times you’d seen him shirtless before; from walking around your house on a hot day to peeling his shirt off after getting drenched from the torrential downpour or walking out of your bathroom with only a towel wrapped around his waist to go find his clothes... you were never going to get over how jacked Tom was. Especially not when you got goosebumps almost every time you saw him shirtless.
“What do you have behind your back?” you asked, furrowing your eyebrows. You stood up to try and get a glimpse of whatever he was hiding.
“Nothing,” he replied quickly. “I’m just uh.. scratching my back.”
“Sure, Tom.” You weren’t at all convinced.
Tom had made it to the corner of the pool and his arms were still hidden behind him. It didn’t matter to you what he was doing as long as you would be able to chuck him into the water. As he slowly inched closer to you, you took off your sunglasses and placed them on the table. The plan was to walk up to him, meet him halfway then push him in, but your feet were rooted to the ground. Something felt off.
“Tom..” you said cautiously, suspicions rising by the second.
There it was! You tried to conceal your reaction as you caught a glimpse of the orange nozzle of a water gun just behind Tom’s shoulder. That dirty cheat thought he was going to one up you! But you’d show him.
“Yes, (Y/N)?” Tom smiled innocently as he continued his journey toward you. Goosebumps rose on your skin and you weren’t sure whether it was because the wind had suddenly gotten chillier or the uncertainty of when Tom was going to strike.
You pushed your windswept hair back. You knew what you had to do.
You took off at a sprint straight at Tom. His eyes grew wide as you bolted towards him. His right arm frantically moved to bring his weapon forward, but he was too slow. You’d never played rugby or any kind of contact sport, so you drew inspiration from how rugby players tackled on TV and lunged at his midriff like a bulldozer.
Smack!
Falling, falling, falling.
Both of you hit the water with a tremendous splash. Water shot up your nose and the back of your head throbbed. Tom had elbowed you by accident. The water consumed you. Both of you.
Letting go of Tom’s body, you realised that he had lost his grip on the water gun. You were quick to spot the bright yellow, green and orange toy floating on the surface of the pool a couple of metres away from where you were. Tom made a speedy recovery and spun around to find you floating a little over arm's length away from him. Ignoring the stinging of your eyes and the screaming of your lungs, you made eye contact with him. His brown hair floated like a halo around his head and you tried not to laugh at the sight of his puffed out cheeks.
In that moment of your distraction, Tom had spotted the water gun too and he wasted no time in swimming toward it. He wasn’t going to let you win even if you’d already tackled him into the water. He wasn’t going to let you go without a little revenge of his own.
Your instincts took you by surprise and without a second thought, you made a grab for one of his legs as he swam past. Tom struggled in your grip, flinging his leg around. He was stronger than you but maybe being underwater somehow helped you pull Tom back down.
Tom was a persistent person. He didn’t once stop trying to wring free from your grip. You were starting to run out of breath. He was much faster than you were at swimming much to your dismay and you didn’t have the slightest idea of what you could do to further delay his course to the toy. So you did the first thing that occurred in your brain. A thought that had been haunting you for the past couple months and you’d fought long and hard to erase.
In one swift motion, you grabbed the sides of his face and kissed him. Square on the lips. Those non-existent, surprisingly soft lips of his.
You felt your cheeks warm up despite the coolness of the pool. Your entire body, in fact, was feeling warm, especially the sides of your waist where Tom’s hands had found themselves placed. You could’ve sworn that you felt Tom’s lips curve into a smile, but before you could properly confirm it the urgency of your lungs took over and you were forced to pull away and swim at lightning speed toward the pool’s surface.
You welcomed the cool rush of air that entered your thirsty lungs but instantly started coughing once your head burst out of the water. You felt slightly dizzy, not really believing you’d just kissed your best friend. As you tread water and tried to dial down your coughing you saw the water gun floating away from you and toward a wet mop of brown curls.
Tom’s head popped up from the water and he took in a large mouthful of air. His hair was sticking to various parts of his face and you weren’t sure if you’d seen him unrulier and cuter than he had been in that moment. He winked at you before he dove back underwater taking the water gun with him.
The water gun.
“Damn it,” you whispered breathlessly, paddling over to the edge of the pool. You propped your arm up on the ledge as you caught your breath. You watched faintly amused as he swum around in a ninja-like manner like you couldn’t see him clear as day beneath the sapphire ripples. It was clear Tom thought he had the upper hand.
A voice in the back of your mind was telling you that you were well and truly screwed but you tried your best not to listen to it. Tom would be needing to come up for air any second now and you had a hunch that he would start firing at the same time. You thought about getting out of the pool but you knew that it wouldn’t make much difference because there wasn’t anything liftable that you could use as a shield. You could run into the house but why ruin the fun?
As you were still trying to figure out how to win this battle, Tom suddenly emerged from below and you found yourself at gunpoint. You chuckled nervously as you eyed the menacingly orange nozzle.
“Thomas,” you said, your voice sickeningly sweet. You grit your teeth into a forced grin. “Honey.”
“Yes, love?” Tom still had the water gun trained on you. He was bobbing up and down in the water, staying afloat using only his legs. You tried to maintain your fake grin as your attention switched from the orange nozzle to Tom’s equally as menacing smile. However, you found that your grin was becoming more of a nervous smile.
Just as Tom shot his first stream of water, you make the quick decision of diving underneath. The stream barely scraped the top of your hair before you fully submerged yourself.
Perplexed, Tom ducked his head into the pool. At the same time you kicked off the wall, shooting towards Tom, and for the second time that day you found your arms wrapped around his midriff as you once again successfully caught Tom off guard.
The both of you didn’t travel very far despite the amount of strength you put into pushing off the wall (you always found water restrictive in that way). The next couple seconds went by extremely fast and you could barely keep up with what was happening. Tom had recovered much quicker and by the time you paddled up for air, he had the water gun trained on you again like a sniper.
The nozzle and your nose were almost touching. You felt dizzy as you went a little cross-eyed eyeing the intimidating piece of plastic.
Breathing heavily, you felt your entire body sag, exhaustion finally catching up to you. You looked over at Tom and you saw how he looked quite puffed out too, his cheeks flushed rosy red.
“Just shoot me.” You wearily paddled backwards. “You’ve won, just shoot me.”
Not a second later three quick bursts of water hit your face in quick succession. Your face was already dripping wet so the water didn’t bother you as much as you thought it would. Though the skin on your face did feel a little tingly.
Wiping the water from your eyes you saw Tom flamboyantly making a show of his ‘humble’ win, splashing about and making the most childish noises. He hollered incoherent words and sounds that you assumed was some sort of football victory chant. You should’ve at least felt pissed off, but you weren’t and you couldn’t help but smile a little. Tom’s childishness always made you smile.
Swimming to the edge of the pool, you hoisted yourself up so that you could sit and finally have some rest.
“How about a celebratory kiss for the winner?” Tom said. He’d stopped splashing about but it didn’t look like he’d be letting go of his win anytime soon. His chocolate eyes looked hopeful and your heart strings tugged ever so slightly.
“Oh,” you replied, smirking. “So after one spontaneous kiss from me, you think that you have all access to my luscious lips?”
“Don’t I?” Tom replied in a confident and cocky way but the small drop in the corner of his lips didn’t escape your attention.
You pretended to think about his question, leaning back on your palms. “I guess it would have to depend on how I felt about you. Don’t you think?”
You gently kicked your feet underneath the rippling water, silently assessing Tom’s expression. He wore his confidence like a badge, something he often did. Quite frankly it was one of the things that attracted you to him in the first place. He was confident in how he held himself, how he acted, how he spoke. You admired that about him.
Tom’s eyes were soft and his face relaxed, though you saw the slight clench of his jaw. He swam towards you, the water gun floating forgotten in the middle of the pool and he put his hands on your knees. You stopped kicking your legs and Tom rested his chin on his knuckles. Your heart was beating like crazy as you waited in anticipation of what he was going to say. If he was going to say anything.
“So how do you feel about me?” he asked, searching your eyes. “It’s not every day that your beautiful best friend decides to kiss-”
“I like you,” you rushed out. You froze from the suddenness of your confession. Tom lifted his head, eyes wide and his grip on your knees tightening lightly.
You felt like you were on fire. You became aware of every sensation touching your body from the heat of the concrete, the chill of the water and especially the warmth of Tom’s hands.
“Is that what you wanted to hear?” you asked, suddenly feeling out of breath and slightly annoyed at yourself. You pushed back some hair that stuck to your cheek. “Is that what you wanted, Tom?”
Tom’s temporary look of shock melted away into that of tenderness and warmth. His lips curved to reveal a lipless smile. Tom had a variety of smiles, all conveying different things. This particular one you’d learnt to recognise was reserved for moments when he was around his family, Tessa or when he was talking about his latest projects. Your stomach did a flip.
“It was, yeah,” Tom chuckled. He proceeded to lay his arms across your knees and rest his chin on them all the while keeping his eyes on you. Out of habit, your hand reached forward to push a wayward strand of Tom’s curly hair to the side. His smile grew as you did so and you wondered to yourself how many times this man could make your stomach flip in such a short amount of time.
“So you uh... like me as well?” you asked lamely, clearing your throat. “As in like like me, like more than a-”
“Friend?” Tom grinned, finishing your sentence. “Yes for fuck sake, (Y/N)-” he laughed, his chest vibrating against your shins. “-I thought I’d made it obvious by now.”
“Always good to check.” You looked away blushing profusely. For the past few months, you’d been fantasising about how the both of you would be confessing your feelings to each other. If he even liked you back for that matter. You could never tell whether the constant teasing and sly remarks you exchanged meant anything or if it was all just good fun. Many fantasies were based on missed opportunities and thinking back to something that happened that day and altering it so that by the end you were in each other’s arms kissing passionately. You often found yourself screaming into your pillow afterwards (not one of your finest moments). Never had you imagined that it would happen in such an uncoordinated and awkward way. Or maybe you had. You just hoped that it wouldn’t turn out that way.
Tom dropped back down into the water and swam to your side propping himself up on the pool’s edge. You tried to think of something to say as you felt his leg press against yours.
“I’ve had a crush on you for almost a year now you know,” Tom confessed suddenly.
You stared in disbelief. “Yeah, right.”
“It’s true!” he insisted. “I’m surprised I was able to keep it a secret for so long.”
You swatted his arm. “You should’ve told me! You could’ve saved me a whole lot of misery.”
“You should’ve told me. You know how I am with romantic declarations, (Y/N). They make me nervous,” Tom trailed off, staring down at the water.
“Thomas Stanley Holland, nervous about romance? Why I’ve never heard of such ludicrous!” You smiled. “Spiders, maybe, but romantic gestures? Who are you and what have you done with my favourite Holland?”
“Shut up. This was different.” Tom returned his gaze to you. “It was you.”
A blush started to creep up from your neck to your already burning face. It was rare to see Tom act so nervously and you couldn't help but feel like you'd accomplished something unprecedented. "Well, I'm flattered."
You rested your head on Tom’s shoulder. “Wanna go watch ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ with me?”
“Again?” Tom asked, amused. “If you wanted to look at my abs all you have to do is look down here.”
You heard the sound of Tom patting his stomach and rolled your eyes saying, “Have you ever considered that maybe I just like Spider-Man?”
“Sweetheart, I am Spider-Man.”
Lifting your head, you gave him a flat look. You got up and grabbed the colourful beach towel you had left on the lounger earlier. "Hey, where are you going?” Tom asked, also standing up.
“To watch Homecoming, silly.” You wrapped the towel around your body. “And I don’t care if you don’t want to watch it with me. I’ll just enjoy the film by myself.”
With your head held high, you grabbed your sunglasses and started to walk toward the house. You knew from past experience that it wouldn’t be four steps before Tom said-
“Wait, wait, I’m coming!”
A small smile threatened to break through your cool exterior. You turned around to wait for him. He grabbed the spare white towel on the table and jogged over to you as he dried his hair.
“Okay, let’s go.” Tom smiled at you, his hair now a curly mess. The sun stood behind him, illuminating his dark brown curls and your hands itched to fix them. You reached a hand up to the side of his head to smooth his hair down. In the spur of the moment, you stood on your tippy toes and pressed a short kiss on his lips.
He had that smile on his lips again as you pulled away. You grinned back but your smile was inked in devilish gaiety.
“I love you, Tom, I do,” you said. “but remember when I said that you’d won? Yeah, I was just kidding.”
Tom had not noticed you move your hands to his chest. With the pool idly waiting behind him, you gave Tom a firm shove sending him toppling into the cool water with a splash.
Your eyes lit up and you made a dash for the house, laughing as you run. You heard Tom resurface.
“(Y/N)!”

Tagged by @little-lightning-lavellan who is sitting directly next to me right now and I actually kinda love them more than words this is a crazy feeling of adoration. Anywayyyyy.... ABOUT ME.
1: Why did you choose your url?
Because I needed everyone to know I was now basically a dragon age blog now and because I like editing writing and I like Varric
2: Any side blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.
Yeah but they are inactive. Just stocked up URLs basically.
3: How long have you been on tumblr?
Since like literally the beginning of tenth grade (2011) and yes you can go back and find everyyyyyything and NO I do not encourage it
4: Do you have a queue tag?
Nope, and I barely queue anything anyway.
5: Why did you start your blog in the first place?
Probably because I had emo feelings and likes the pretty pictures and alt music scene.
6: Why did you choose your icon/pfp?
It's the most beautiful and amazing picture of my Warden Silvhen Mahariel, and it was drawn by one of my all time favorite mutuals @kantrips whom I think is just truly spectacular and funny and kind.
7: Why did you choose your header?
Uhhhhh, it's just pale pink cloud pattern because I'm basic and boring.
8: What’s your post with the most notes?
I think probably that one I made in high school that was like "what she says: i'm fine what she means: i'm listening to mayday parade and having feels" that got almost like 800 notes

Uhhhh. I have literally no idea but I do know that most of my "followers" are inactive accounts from over half a decade ago.

1. why did you choose your url?
I'm shocking at coming up with things like these but I knew I wanted to incorporate Spencer and I'm a huge fan of Renaissance-Era European History and thus spencers-renaissance was born 😌

yep - @spencersren-18 is my nsfw sideblog (basically a rb dump) and @sren-insp is where I reblog things I might want to base a fic on!

it was the first social media I ever got, but this is my fourth blog and the only one I've ever posted oc on.

because I had set a challenge to myself to write 12 fics before the year ended last year and I thought it would be a good idea to cross-post them here and keep track in a masterlist instead of keeping it all on ao3 and I'm so glad I did omg!

reblog bait in general is really triggering to a lot of people, but posts like these... it's a new level. inform people about the issue but don't demand things of them unless you want to push them away or only have people engaging with the topic out of guilt :/
