HEAR ME OUT
Merlin season six where it’s modern day and merlin (bearded colin morgan) lives in London, and when arthur (still Bradley james) comes back to life they have to save the world and whatever BUT ALSO the knights haven’t come back to life but they’re like reincarnated into new people (varying genders/races/etc) who suddenly find themselves wrapped up in this medieval destiny
LIKE
(Gwaine) just moved to London and is floating around looking for a place to crash—boom. Runs into Merlin, touch of destiny and all that, Merlin lets them stay in his spare room (they don’t have a job so they “pay rent” by not complaining when arthur and merlin do it in the next room, also by doing the dishes).
(Leon) is just trying to get through a master’s program in medieval studies and classic literature—boom. Runs into Merlin at a library, both of them looking for the same ancient document for research and they get overly invested in whatever it is Merlin and Arthur are working on because goddamn these strange men know a lot about saxon-era britain and that’s the topic of my thesis.
(Lancelot) is climbing the corporate ladder in some random business just trying to make ends meet—boom. Stops Merlin and/or Arthur from walking onto the street as a car hurtles past and there’s a sort of “aha” moment Merlin and Arthur take them out for coffee talking a bit about a problem they’re having with their mission and (Lancelot) asks a really obvious question they hadn’t considered so they adopt them.
(Elyan) is friends with (Leon)’s roommate and practically lives with them and one day when they’re there and the roommate is gone—boom. Everyone’s over so (Leon) can fetch a relevant document they’re borrowing for their research and (Elyan) answers some obscure question the others didn’t know so they get absorbed into the group.
(Percival) lives outside the city working a low level job after their rugby career was a bust and—boom. The team needs some help and (Lancelot) “knows a guy” because the two worked together on a project during their undergrad and weirdly stayed in touch ((Lancelot) helped them get their current job) so when they need some extra muscle…
So we get arthur and merlin in love having to save the world while parenting a team of half-feral 20-somethings who supposedly carry the spirits of their long-dead friends
Does this make sense? Please add on more ideas

What if shadow and Lancelot met and decided to swap lives for shits and giggles. Like they swap outfits and see how different there lives are just to see if there unique.

fate is, for the most part, a good arthurian adaptation, but somehow fgo manages to be so godawful when it comes to everything round table that it single-handedly manages to cancel that out and make fate as a whole a kinda bad adaptation
#the complete and utter misunderstanding of everything and everyone involved is shocking#gawain in extra is a villain and thus doesn't get much deep exploration but still. it's all bc he's deeply chivalrous and loyal above all#which is in line with his medieval counterpart!! and while i'm still a little bit bitter he's not rider class and wish he had a bit more#influence from certain arthurian traditions. it's understandable that japanese speakers wouldn't have access to most arthurian texts#(as translations of medieval arthurian literature into a language like /english/ are already sorely lacking)#but i can just hold out for a hypothetical walewein (berserker) to show up karl der große/charlemagne style#extra gawain is fine. he serves his purpose and doesnt directly contradict his medieval characterization. his sun powers are even included!#and then in fgo he kills his brother which is. medieval gawain is defined by being a little bit mad about family.#he quite literally causes THE FALL OF CAMELOT bc lancelot (who he's said to love more than anyone) accidentally kills his brothers#and gawain becomes obsessed with revenge. forces arthur into a war against lancelot. and then he dies (how depends on the text)#medieval gawain is willing to forgive the death of his own mother (who is someone i have strong feelings about. don't worry) bc his brother#was the one behind it. in What world would he be willing to kill gaheris!!!#agravain is. eugh. medieval agravain is beautiful. chivalrous and charismatic. he also has a bit of a complex surrounding being compared to#his brother gaheris which manifests as an obsessive desire to kill and (essentially) replace him.#and. while he does a lot of other scheming. largely in regards to lancelot who he's also a little bit obsessed with.#it's also important that he thinks that everything he does not in regards to gaheris is good and right and will save camelot#fate agravain is an evil royal advisor from a children's cartoon. which sucks bc he could easily be a delightfully complex villain#or even a tragic hero if he was actually in-line with his medieval self#no notes on mordred or artoria. whether that's bc they were already well-established enough in other installments to not get butchered#or if i just forgot bc i like to try and mentally block out fgo on most days is 50/50#morgan i try to block out but the conflation of her with her sister morgause and both ladies of the lake is. rlly bad.#bc she's a good portrayal of morgan but a horrible portrayal of the other three#it leaves vivvianne and nimue sorely underutilized. and as for morgause it's just. morgan could have still evilly influenced mordred if he#was her nephew and. on top of being boring and unoriginal. and messing up the timeline of artoria's rule. it eliminates morgause as a#possible character in fate. which sucks bc she's fascinating in medieval texts.#and as for tristan and bedivere. they aren't atrociously bad or anything they're just underutilized. if you're going to summon a bunch of#round table servants at once and pit them all against bedivere there's absolutely no reason not to include kei.esp considering how likely#it'd be for him to side with his little sister no matter what and the fact that they're Always mentioned in tandem with each other#and tristan should've had a madness enhancement bc love potion. he should only be able to think clearly if isolde is there as well.#but those are less criticisms of what the text did than criticisms of what the text Could have easily done so like i said.

WIPtober 3: Adjectivizing Thee pt. 2
Summary: Sonic is impatient. Caliburn is annoyed. Lancelot is sleepy. They could do without all of these things. Actually, Lancelot is a lot more open and honest when he’s sleepy, so that can stay. Even if he is a little snootier because of it, heh. Rating: General!
Note: This is a snippet! Or possibly a deleted scene! I like it a lot but it is hard to make it fit. Maybe. IDK what i’m doing with this tbh. :C
--------------
“Sir Lancelot!”
Lancelot startles at the sound of his name like he hasn’t been listening, pulling away from the tree to sit up straighter. His visor is pulled over his face, obscuring his expression again, and Sonic wonders if he had been spacing out. Or dozing?
Caliburn either does not notice or chooses not to notice, “Would you please remind Sir Sonic why we are here.”
“Gladly, Kingmaker,” Lancelot answers, voice slightly husky like maybe he had been on the verge of falling asleep, turning his face in Sonic’s direction, “My lady mother and the royal magician, through use of the reflection pool and other ancient magicks, ascertained this was the crossroad of the Lady of Rings.”
Lancelot does not immediately continue, even though Sonic and Caliburn are waiting for him to elaborate. He’s really not much of a conversationalist, huh?
“Cool, good for her,” Sonic says at length, moving his hand in impatient circles, “And why are we here?”
“The Lady of Rings is a powerful seer, rumored to have trained under Merlin himself,” There’s a weird intonation to the way Lancelot says Merlin, something negative, but it’s very subtle. Maybe Sonic just imagined it. “Upon winning her favor, she will tell you how to return to your homeland.”
This time, Caliburn jumps in where Lancelot leaves off, preemptively answering the unasked question, “The Lady of Rings is said to polish her rings at this crossroad on the day the sun blazes the hottest. It is said her eyes are so weak, she needs the brightest light to see if there are any imperfections on her rings.”
“Can’t think of how this day could get hotter!” Sonic agrees with a sigh, rolling onto his stomach and kicking his feet in the air. Not super comfortable, but it gives him something to do, at least, “You two sound pretty confident. Has she helped you before?”
“No,” Lancelot answers simply, leaning back against the tree.
“....That’s weird,” Sonic says, arching a brow at him, “Caliburn, I get- he’s swayed by titles and reputations and junk-“
“Epithets and reputations must be earned!” Caliburn interjects, hopping in place with outrage, “You would do well to remember that, Knave the Hedgehog!”
“Nope, no take backs!” Sonic was just going to ignore Caliburn, but that sword really knew what buttons to push, “My new ‘epithet’ that you gave me is ‘Sir Sonic, Knight of the Wind!’ And don’t you forget it!”
Caliburn looks like he is going to keep arguing, but let’s out an amused sound and smiles instead, “Indeed.”
Uh. Okay. “Cool,” Sonic wasn’t expecting his sword to agree with him so easily, and he isn’t sure what to say... so he turns back to Lancelot.
“Lance!”
Lancelot startles, again, turning his face in his direction, “Sir.”
“You don’t seem like the kind of guy who gives his trust out so easily,” Sonic rests his chin on his hands, still kicking his feet restlessly, “Why are you vouching for this lady?”
“You misunderstand,” Lancelot scoffs with a shake of his head, “I am not. I have never met her. I have no desire to vouch for her, her temperament, or her abilities.”
“...Okay,” Sonic answers after a moment, trying to figure out what Lancelot is trying to say. He’s getting better at it, but this one’s tricky, “Then... what’s got you so sure this lady is the real deal?”
“I trust my lady mother’s judgment and magicks,” Lancelot pointedly does not mention Merlina, obviously still a sore spot, “I trust my swordsmanship and instincts. I trust you and Caliburn to keep out of my way.”
Lancelot settles back against the tree with a shrug, still looking rather sleepy. He must have been just as bored, “I don’t know if she will be able to help you- but I will ensure you come back from this adventure hale and hearty. That is all I can promise.”
Aha, Sonic knew it! Nothing to do with this Lady of Rings or Sonic’s quest to go home, and everything to do with Lancelot’s combat abilities and skill. The black and red hedgehog certainly spoke down to him when they first met, so it’s good to see this side of him again. Not Lancelot’s most endearing trait, for sure, but much better than his more recent quiet and stiff formality.
Especially in the company of his fellow knights, it feels too much like Lancelot is on his best behavior around Sonic. Not fake, per say, but definitely not normal. Like he’s visiting his grandma or meeting with a dignitary. This? This is a lot more casual and honest.
Caliburn’s mouth quirks into a disapproving frown, obviously not pleased, but he doesn’t say anything. Weird.
“Heh,” Sonic chuckles, amused and pleased despite himself, “If you say so, Lance.”

One thing about me is that I will stand by basically every bad deed of my favourite characters fully aware of them being bad deeds. I just don't care
#'He destroyed an entire city and tried to destroy the world *twice*!!!'#Yes and he was right to do so. The motives are good and the city is fake anyway. Drown it in the abyss‚ dear boy#'He caused the fall of Camelot!' have you considered Guinevere and him wanted each other desperately and with a heart wrenching longing?#I don't care about Camelot#'He manipulated children to get his way!' again good motives. That's actually my favourite trait of them. Cheers#'He was the cause of kids dying!!!' Yes and it was quite the rational choice both times. And he wanted to go home to his wife and kid#Quite sweet of him#The other wanted to see his most important person again and ease their loneliness. I couldn't care less about the children dying#It's the 'absolute loyalty and devotion to someone means betraying everything else' approach#They do shitty things to everyone else but don't harm what matters to them the most‚ or not on purpose?#They can go wild. I'll support them in every step#Slay Gawain even if I love him. Cut heads off. Manipulate and kill children. Destroy the world. Steal from the kid you raised. Have fun#I'll bring you a snack and some water when you're done!#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later#The examples here are Heathcliff‚ Jack Vessalius‚ Lancelot and Odysseus#but I'm really okay with basically everything my faves do every time#In Ovid' Heroides it is said in one of the letters that Helen wanted to be kidnapped#I like the potential of the idea. As if trying to gain glory‚ reclaiming it as her right as daughter of a god‚#and doing so in the way she can in her condition of woman (as opposed to someone like Achilles)#What can I say. I don't care if Hector dies and Odysseus is lost for twenty years#I mean‚ I do. I love them. But also... Good for her. Go take your glory‚ girl#Medea murders the kids? Avenge yourself. Clytemnestra murders Agamemnon? Avenge your daughter. Eat him later if you want#I don't stand by this interpretation (or not entirely) but is Cathy dying 'on purpose' to hurt Heathcliff and Edgar?#Destroy their lives. I love you#I just don't care. I fully support their wrongs. They're actually rights 😔#'He is scamming and manipulating people' is particularly funny to me because that's not even all that bad?#It's always the best trait of the characters that do so#And idk maybe the scammed manipulated people could have been smarter about it

A lot of thoughts about how galehaut could never recognize lancelot after like. U know. Everything happens. Hes just a completely different person in every way but I dont think that would matter too much. Tbh. Because lancelot even at the end of everything is just kind of a sad man who has never been treated like a person ever since he was younger and galehaut is galehaut and wouldnt care if he had killed him in a more personal hands on manner lol. Which makes me normal. But whatever

i like that in the first surviving text featuring lancelot his being the knight of the round table in love with guinevere is already established but chretien goes out of his way to stress that this isn’t a predatory cuckolding villainous thing even if it is dishonourable he loves her in an extremely sincere courtly love loser way where he’s so busy thinking about her he falls in a stream and drops his lance and makes a fool of himself

Round 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gwen
She stands in the way of Merthur, by far the most popular ship in the fandom. I haven’t seen it as much in recent years, but back in the days of fanfiction.net she got slut shamed so badly for having been romantically interested in three of the male characters over the course of the show, which is just... normal straight woman behavior, meanwhile Merlin crushed on pretty much every woman who even looked at him in the early seasons of the show and got no hate for that whatsoever. I barely even read Merthur fics (not because it’s m/m, just because certain aspects of their relationship don’t appeal to me) but the “Gwen is a slut” attitude was so pervasive across the fandom, even fics that weren’t explicitly anti-Gwen would “jokingly” call her a slut. I even saw a few fics demonizing her for having an affair with Lancelot despite the fact that SHE WAS ENCHANTED when that happened, and surprise surprise, Lancelot (who was also under the influence of magic) got none of that hate, and neither did Arthur, who got enchanted to fall in love with multiple women over the course of the show.
Canonically Arthur Pendragon's love interest and an important and interesting character in the show who's completely shoved aside and ignored in favour of the medieval bbc yaoi ship. At best they put her and Morgana in Lesbian Timeout (ie make them get together and then reduce them to wingwomen at best because god forbid we focus on the medieval bbc yuri). Justice for Gwen right now!
She is prince Arthur's love interest (eventually wife). Arthur is MADLY in love with her. He tells his tyrannical father he would give up his crown to be with her (she's a servant in the series). He forgives her cheating on him with Lancelot (!), which in the show is caused by an evil enchantment, but the characters never find out about it. He chooses her time and time again. His love for Gwen is literally never put into question. Many fans insist to this day that there was no chemistry between Gwen and Arthur compared to Arthur and Merlin. Arthur isn’t even particularly nice to Merlin most of the time! The funny thing is that Merlin himself ships these two so hard and does everything he can to help them get together!! Gwen & Arthur are adorable and too many fans were drunk on the yaoi fumes to see it. ARTHUR WAS A SIMP FOR GWEN
Every Supernatural Woman
Supernatural is so mean to women and committed to queerbaiting but it still gives Sam and Dean lovers to kill. The writers kill and villainize them and the fans get the few that remain
wincest and destiel shippers cannot handle the idea of their blorbos having a Woman THREATENING their SHIPS god FORBID
It literally used to be a running joke that if a female character got introduced you knew she was going to die soon because fans would react so negatively to her "stealing" one of the boys away from the big ship, whether it be destiel or wincest

Arthur and Merlin travel back in time without knowing the other is from the future too AU
LINKS TO THE OTHER PARTS OF THIS AU HERE: PART 1 , PART2 , PART 3 , PART 4 , PART 5 , PART 6 , PART 7 (You're here) , PART 8
A little more of past trauma
Merlin, Arthur, Lancelot (who isn't a Knight yet) and some knights camping in the woods.
Knight 1: (hesitantly) Sire...
Knight 2: (careful) We need wood... for the fire, sire.
Arthur: (a little confused by their behavior) Pick some fallen branches then.
Knight 1: Ahm... (sweats)
Lancelot: (realising why they're so scared. Sighs) There's no fallen branches, isn’t there?
Knight 2: ... No.
Merlin: (thinking and looking at Arthur carefully) Oh, no...
Arthur: (hardens his features) search harder.
Knight 1: We searched the whole perimeter three times, sire. There are no branches, no even leafs.
Knight 2: These trees are practically naked. We need... We need to cut one down.
Arthur: No.
Merlin: Arthur...
Arthur: No. We don't need fire anyway.
Lancelot: (the only brave enough to contradict him apart from Merlin) Sire, we need to cook the meat and if we don't make fire we'll freeze to death.
Arthur looks conflicted. Merlin sighs. He appreciates what his prince is doing. He went as far to almost forbid all his knights to hunt and cut any plant, especially trees, ever again and he knows Arthur would have ban any of this practices all together in the entire kingdom if he weren't still a prince. Fortunatly, he talked him out of it, so now Arthur allows hunting only when strictly necessary. Cutting trees, however, was always out of the question. They managed to avoid it... until now.
Arthur: (pointing to a knight) Hey, you. Take off your shirt. We can use that.
Knight 1: What?! Sire, but-
Arthur: (very serious) Are you questioning me?
Merlin: Arthur (holds his hand and pulls him gently til they are apart from the rest). Arthur, it's okay.
Arthur: (almost shouting, firmly) No, Merlin! Not with this. No!
Merlin: (reassuring) It just hurts badly when they do it for fun or there's no need. Now we need it. It's fine.
Arthur: (shakes his head, anguish in his eyes) I can't make them hurt you.
Merlin: They wouldn't be really hurting me. Besides, would you rather let me die of hunger and freeze to death? (Puts a hand on his face and smiles) I'll be fine, I promise.
Arthur: (sighs) alright. (Goes to his Knights)
Lancelot: (aproaches Merlin, whispering) Can't you make some branches fall?
Merlin: (shakes his head) these branches aren't thick enough for a fireplace, and I need to get use to this. Arthur too.
Lancelot: (nods in understanding) He must love you a lot.
Merlin: (nervous) Wha-?! What do you mean?
Lancelot: Don't tell me you didn't notice. He was willing let us starve and freeze so you wouldn't feel any pain just a minute ago.
Merlin: He cares for me. I'm his friend.
Lancelot: I'm his friend too and he never looked at me the way he does to you, like you are the sun. Or use any excuse to touch me, like he might die if he doesn't have you close for more than 5 minutes.(pause) And I don't believe you're not aware of this either.
Merlin: (sighs) I don't want to get my hopes up. I'm happy with how things are. I don't want to ruin things between us. (Thinking) Not again.
Lancelot: (smiles encouringly) You don't have to confess your feelings or anything. Just try to make a move to taste the waters and you can decide what to do from there.
Arthur orders his knights to cut down the farrest tree they could find. It's useless though. No matter how far, Merlin still can feel it. Merlin doesn't scream in pain this time, but he still trembles and flinches. Arthur hugs him close through all this and somehow he ends up sitting on Arthur's lap, and hiding his face in the crook of Arthur's neck. He whimpers and whimpers in pain until he falls asleep in Arthur's arms.
Lancelot: (aproaching them) You should wake him before they come back.
Arthur: (shakes his head) He needs this.
Lancelot: If they see you like this they'll think-
Arthur: (sharply) They can think what they want.
Lancelot: (smiles softly) You don't really believe this is some medical disease, do you?
Arthur: ...
Lancelot: You know about Merlin.
Arthur: (sighs) And he told you. (thinking, a mix of angry, hurt and jealous) He told you before telling me.
Lancelot: No, but I catched him. He echanted the weapon I used to kill the griffin.
Arthur: (snorts) This idiot.
Lancelot: He was careful I'm just observant. Why haven't you told him that you know?
Arthur: I want him to tell me himself.
Lancelot: Why?
Arthur: He deserves that much. And I want to prove that he can trust me.
Lancelot: I don't think it's a matter of trust. He trusts you a lot, Arthur. I know he really wants to tell you but he just doesn't know how to. I mean, can you blame him? He's been told all his life he should hide who he is. I don't think he ever willingly told anyone. (sighs) Even outside Camelot, there's hardly a place where magic users are safe.
Arthur: (with conviction) When I'm king there will be. Camelot will welcome magic again and he won't have to hide anymore. (looking at Merlin sleeping peacefully in his arms, thinking) And this time he will be able to live it and enjoy it.
Lancelot: (to himself) I knew it was a sign.
Arthur: (confused) What?
Lancelot: I never told you why I came to the citadel.
Arthur: You wanted to become a Knight. (thinking) Though you arrived earlier than I expected.
Lancelot: That too, but I also had a dream.
Arthur: A dream?
Lancelot: I saw myself in a knight armor. There was some sort of hole or crack in the air, I don't know, everything's kind of blurry. But I do remmember clearly two faces. Faces I never saw before in my life, but in my dream they were familiar. It wasn't until I came here that I recognised them. They were yours and Merlin's. You were in my dream.
Arthur: (in shock, but composes himself quickly)... I see. And you believe that's a sign. A sign of what exactly?
Lancelot: That one day you will be the king I'll serve with honor.
Arthur: Right... Did you have another memo-I mean dream about us?
Lancelot: (shakes his head) That's all. (looks at the sky) It's getting late. I'll go look for the knights, they may need help. (thinking) And you can have some time alone.
Arthur: (stops Lancelot before he leaves) Lancelot. You said me appearing in your dream mean I'll be the king you'll serve one day. What about Merlin? What does he appearing in your dream means to you?
Lancelot: I thought it was obvious.
Arthur: What?
Lancelot: Well, every king needs a queen sire. (laughs a little and leaves before Arthur can process his words)

this is my worm brain talking but yennefer and jaskier are so guinevere and lancelot coded to me just… two people who are both bound to and both in love with different people but are still so hopelessly devoted to each other, lancelot feeling like he’s betraying arthur by falling in love with guinevere while still loving arthur with all his heart and being ready to fall on the sword for him, guinevere knowing that hers and arthur’s is the great love story while still falling in love with lancelot in spite of that, the shame, never being sure where you’re standing in comprising to the other, just slightly toying that line of infidelity and betrayal with a connection that was born out of pure love and understanding of the other person, the knowledge that all of this will end in pain and grief and you will not escape your destiny

Merlin: it's so easy to make people fall in love.
Gwen: no it's not.
Merlin: watch me
*shoves Arthur into a mudd pit*
Arthur: *stares at him incredulously*
Arthur: *suddenly looks confused*
Arthur: *turns red*
Gwen: holy shit that actually worked?
Merlin: holy shit that actually worked!
Bonus:
Arthur: ....
Gwaine: he got you too, ey? Welcome on board.
Arthur: oh GOD.
Gwen: It's okay. We've all been there.
Arthur: who is "we"?
Lancelot: we believe you call it "Camelot", my lord.

In bed with you is my favourite part of the day
Summary: Lance comes home to find you in bed after a long day.
Hope you’ll enjoy this part. Let me know in the comments section! And to support me by tipping me!
Little information, I will, for now, only post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Thank you, and Enjoy! :)
Lots of love, xxx Spicy Clover
Tumblr media
If there is one thing Lance loves more than racing, it is you. You and your pink cheeks. You and your uncontrollable laughs. You and your little mimics that he thinks are too cute. You and your many expressions of lasciviousness. All of you. He cannot live again without having you at his side. Being away from you is like being punished by force.
He prefers to be in bed with you, do nothing, and enjoy each other’s presence. You met in a bed, and he loves to think you’ll end your life in a bed. Whatever the bed, the important thing is that you’re together.
Feel your hand caress his naked body, travel every inch of each other’s skin. Knowing every nook and cranny, every weakness, every inch of your body. Hearing you laugh when he tickles you. Hearing you moan when he does you good. Hearing you breathe when you sleep deeply. See the future in your bed.
Feel the sheets filled with your love, your sleep, your sweat.
Before he met you, he didn’t like to stay in bed too long. Loneliness and empty space at his side always gave him anxiety, but since he knew you. He would spend eternity in your arms under those sheets.
When he gets home late, he makes sure not to make too much noise, so he doesn’t disturb your sleep. And you do the same when you come home. The bed has always been the place where you find yourself the most. When he comes home from travel. When you come home from work. When you come home. When you wake up. When you make love.
Oh, he likes to make love to you in a bed.
He loves it when you read him books so that he falls asleep. His head is placed on your belly. Lance listens carefully to the stories. His favourite has always been the legends of King Arthur. He does not know why, but to listen to this account of your voice. He finds himself wandering in his thoughts.
So when you’re apart for several weeks, when he finally comes home. He’s more than happy to find you in your bed, waiting for him, asleep or not.
That night, when he came home. You hadn’t been able to sleep yet. So, when you open the sheets. Lance escaped a sigh of relief.
“Yes, please. Oh, that’s my favourite part of the day.” He comes in and snuggles. Kissing your temple. Slowly drifting away in a cloud of green.
“I love you, Lancelot.” You shiver as you feel his lips wander your face, blindly seeking your lips.
“I love you too, Guinevere.” He mumbles, kissing your lips finally.

ask: Do you have any headcannons of Merlin growing his hair out all curly and everyone in the castle collectively loose their minds
- If you want a mental image, I’ve got you. Take this and this and this and enjoy. :3
- Like the grandpa he is, Gaius teases Merlin for it every morning. He ruffles his hair, mumbles something about being thankful while you have it, and sends him out the door with a tsk.
- It only takes a day or two for it go from subtle waves to quite noticeable, especially when Gaius makes him a shampoo better fit for the curly aspect. It wasn’t really an intentional choice on Merlin’s end, just happenstance from being busy and letting it do what it wants. This also meant he was starting to get slight stubble around his jaw, born from laziness about shaving.
- This switch also happened to fall on a rare weekend where Merlin didn’t really see anyone. Arthur was gone for business and Merlin took the weekend off.
- Gwen says something about it first, crossing him in the halls and stopping him to gently ruffle his hair and go, “Well aren’t you handsome, why have you been hiding this?” to which Merlin blushes (not used to compliments) and waves it off. Gwen continues down the hall, but calls back over her shoulder, “Make sure to ask the knights what they think!”
- Merlin also passes a couple ladies from town who, in no uncertain fashion, stare for long enough that even he notices.
- When he wakes Arthur up by yanking the curtains open and throwing an orange in his direction, Arthur doesn’t notice. Too blinded by sleep and sun and stress. It’s not until after he’s changed and emerges from behind the divider that his gaze flickers to Merlin and he pauses.
- Merlin makes a face, “What? Don’t be thinking about throwing something at me.” Arthur looks away, but doesn’t move, “Nothing, you changed your hair.” Having genuinely forgotten, Merlin pauses, “Oh- I suppose I did. Is that….a problem?” Arthur rolls his eyes, “Why would that be a problem Merlin? I doubt anything can worsen your servant skills any more than their current-,” He’s cut off by Merlin throwing his shoes full speed at him.
- When they run into the knights in the armory, Merlin keeps remembering Gwen’s comment about what they would think. He decides not to say anything, but it doesn’t matter because the second they go outside and the sunlight hits them, Gwaine clocks him immediately.
- “Woah, hold up! You did something, fess up!” Merlin groans but smiles despite himself, “C’mon, don’t do this-,” Percival cuts him, “He’s right though! You’re all rugged now.” He lowered his voice when he said rugged and Merlin and Arthur both make a grossed-out expression. As Elyan opens his mouth to agree, Merlin surrenders, “I grew out my hair a little bit, it got wavy, can we move on now?”
- Gwaine wolf-whistles and the knights burst into laughter. Arthur rolls his eyes and gestures with his sword, “Can we get back to training?” Lancelot grins, “What, are you upset we think Merlin looks nice?” Arthur shoots him a very pointed glare and gestures everyone out into the field.
- Later that evening, Morgana comes to visit Arthur while Merlin’s getting dinner set up. She goes to wave a quick hello but pauses upon seeing him, “Merlin! Your hair looks lovely.” He grins bashfully, “Thanks.” Arthur groans, “Doesn’t anyone in this castle have anything better to do than pay attention to Merlin’s hair?” Morgana shrugs, “Do you not like it?” Arthur stiffens slightly, “I didn’t say- I just don’t care about it.” Gesturing vaguely around, Morgana continues, “It’s not a crime to think he looks nice Arthur, everyone in this castle thinks he looks nice. You’d be crazy not too.”

Excalibur (1981) | Directed by John Boorman
Arthurian Film List | Arthurian Show List | Movie review below the cut ⤦
Star rating: 10/10 Content warning: multiple rape scenes, heavy gore throughout, elements of horror, nudity, animal brutality (horses in battle are treated roughly) Overview: Writer and director John Boorman understood the assignment. It's evident this film was a passion project. Both of his children are in it (his daughter as Igraine, his son as young Mordred) and he had been working with J. R. R. Tolkien back in the 70s on an adaptation of Lord of the Rings which fell through, and much of those elements were revived and put to use here. The script, acting, score, and cinematography meet the epic demands an Arthurian film requires to succeed. Synopsis: The film opens with Uther before he meets Igraine and goes on to detail the entirety of Arthur's reign and life. Arthur's beginnings with Ector and Kay are very sweet and culminate in his pulling the sword in the stone and meeting a fun, quirky Merlin. The wizard trains Arthur up and he's eventually knighted by Urien and makes an ally of him while defending Leodegrance and Guinevere's castle. Arthur falls in love with Guinevere and intends to marry her, but first meets and battles Lancelot, wins his loyalty, and sends him to pick Guinevere up for the royal wedding. Meanwhile Morgan learns magic from Merlin and uses it to conceive Mordred with Arthur. After the royal wedding, the love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere begins. While staying away from Camelot, Lancelot meets country bumpkin Perceval, who follows Lancelot back to Camelot from his secluded woodland home, then takes up the mantle of Gareth Beaumains by working for Kay in the kitchens and champions Guinevere against Gawain until Lancelot can arrive. After the affair between he and Guinevere is found out, Lancelot runs off mad into the woods, and Arthur's prosperity declines. Perceval begins a decade-long quest in search of the Holy Grail to restore Arthur/Fisher King's health so he can reclaim his lands now ravaged by disease. Mordred has grown up in this time and been taught by Morgan to hate Arthur. Once Arthur has been cured, he goes to find Guinevere in the abbey where she had been living, and retrieves Excalibur, which she had been keeping safe for him all that time. Arthur then goes with his remaining knights to battle Mordred, where he is mortally wounded, and Perceval fulfills his final act for his king by returning the sword to the Lady of the Lake as Arthur is spirited away to Avalon. Final thoughts: This movie is so damn good. Nobody's doing it like Boorman. It's my favorite version of the grail quest. Very horror, as it should be. (Monty Python is a different tone, not a worse one!) I love everyone's acting here, the casting is so rich, I love the look and vibe of everyone, the Shakespearean line delivery. All of it. The gaudy green lighting is so 80s but it works, it sets a tone, it commits to the bit, illuminates every magical scene. And the armor is obviously incredible. I won't hear criticism. Either you get it or you don't. You can watch an entire mini-series about the armorer, Terry English, produced by Mythbuster's Adam Savage on YouTube, here. And if you want to learn more about Mordred's cool helmet specifically, watch here. Anyway please watch this, you won't be disappointed.
