Please 🥺 I am curious if you have some ideas

I didn't think much of Caryll? BUT

I headcanon that he was ill from birth. He received many diseases through genes - defects of blood vessels, stomach aches, eyes... In truth, his family, roughly speaking, “buried” him - the boy was not adapted to life and faded away every day. One day he couldn't even feel his legs, what tied him to a chair, and his eyes could no longer discern anything.

My sketch of his young version, maybe even before Byrgenwerth or during studying:

(In fact I am worried that all faces I draw are similar...? I think I need to draw everyone to solve this problem... Good luck lol)

(also I thought that Caryll could have Eastern roots? I mean like Yamamura. I even drew the asian version of him but it wasn't Caryll anymore, so I neglected it...)

In Byrgenwerth, he volunteered to be the one to test the effects of the Blood... The result was stunning! Not only were almost all of his ailments healed (but in fact they still were with him just took on a weaker form. However, he could live a normal life), it was as if he had received a second chance - he was able to get up from his chair again.

After the transfusion, he began to slowly go crazy - I think he was the first one who began to see More than the others, and while his classmates were studying the catacombs with Willem, he suffered from the onset of paranoia, because everything seemed to him false, not the same as earlier. To not to suffer, he delved into the study of the secrets of the Great Ones with the others, and discovered that many of his “nightmares” can be found in frescoes created hundreds of years ago! Caryll dug deeper into this and thus realized that he could understand the ancient civilization as if he had lived there himself! With this came the understanding of Runes.

I explain all this by the fact that the Great Ones are not at all hostile, and have special sympathy for the “outsiders” of society, and they simply felt sorry for them, that's why Caryll could feel them!

About relationships with others:

Rom. I would say that he was in love with her, but rather like an artist with his model - he admired her, but would never have dared to offer these feelings. (Or he just didn't want to! Maybe he is ace?)

Micolash. Micolash was interested in Caryll and very much, but it wasn't mutually xD (Caryll thought of him as of "unusual" kind of human, but would never show it, so Micolash would be even more interested lol). Micolash even showed his best qualities in communication to become good friends with him, especially when he began to have see dreams about Great Ones (Micolash x Caryll has potential :^))

Willem. Master always believed in him. I must say that I don't like Willem, but he showed his humanity then by accepting Caryll as a son and supporting him when he was ready to give up his life because of physical pain he felt. So Willem took care of him even before Caryll got some Insight

Laurence. Laurence most likely would have wanted to get him to his side in the times of the Healing Church, but Caryll was far from religion and officialdom. However, he provided his assistance to the hunters because he wanted to help. (Laurence wasn't nice with him during Burgerking era, If Rom tried to remain calm, listening his insults, Caryll didn't care at all xd)

In general Caryll has easy-going character, with quirks, but fine! He also had an excellent relationship with Damian (Who didn't? lol A few student maybe), who later convinced him to join the School of Mensis.

Caryl is the kind of person who will accept all the mockery and ridicule from you (no one can prove to me that Byrgenwerth did not have a toxic atmosphere! People from different social classes and with opposite ideologies gathered there, leading a constant competition! Of course, there was inner hierarchy and humiliation, and in general the vibe of an English private school to the fullest! You can say, " but Byrgenwerth is a college, not a high school, they were all already adult,” but I will say that all this crap happens in any society, even the smallest! People don’t change, they just acquire a little more traits or change their qualities in one direction or another

Caryll was a quiet boy who seemed to be a good student, but everyone was afraid of him, because he was a local weirdo. He was completely insensitive to people because of being a misanthrope! But if he likes you, you can know that he will not leave you in trouble (but he will come to the rescue only if it is really needed, and in other situations he will watch you get out on your own).

Caryll is also one of those people who absolutely does not age in appearance! So by the time Micolash acquired age-related wrinkles, and Damian started turning into a raisin, Caryll still looked like a young man, albeit battered by life!

Oh oh and also headcanon - he is the one who tells scary stories! (He likes expression of unescapable fear on his friend's faces)

OH and also he could be a wonderful artist! But.. All the portraits he ever created, Caryll burned down, because they reminded him of time when he wasn't able to stand on his legs (he was drawing because he could do nothing else those times)

hey, i started following you recently and ur bio says ur a hacker? any tips on where to start? hacking seems like a v cool/fun way to learn more abt coding and cybersecurity/infrastructure and i'd like to explore it but there's so much on the internet and like, i'm not trying to get into anything illegal. thanks!

huh, an interesting question, ty!

i can give more tailored advice if you hit me up on chat with more specifics on your background/interests.

given what you've written here, though, i'll just assume you don't have any immediate professional aspirations (e.g. you just want to learn some things, and you aren't necessarily trying to get A Cyber Security Job TM within the next three months or w/e), and that you don't know much about any specific programming/computering domain yet.

(stuff under cut because long)

first i'd probably just try to pick some interesting problem that you think you can solve with tech. this doesn't need to be a "hacking" project at first; i was just messing around with computers for ages before i did anything involving security/exploitation.

if you don't already know how to program, you should ideally pick a problem you can solve via programming. for instance: i learned a lot back in the 2000s, when play-by-post forum RPGs were in vogue. see, i'd already been messing around, building my own personal sites, first just with HTML & CSS, and later on with Javascript and PHP. and i knew the forum software everyone used (InvisionPowerBoard) was written in PHP. so when one of the admins at my RPG complained that they'd like the ability to set multiple profile pictures, i was like, "hey i'm good at programming, want me to create a mod to do that," and then i just... did. so then they asked me to program more features, and i got all the sexy nerd cred for being Forum Mod Queen, and it was a good time, i learned a lot.

(i also got to be the person who was frantically IMed at 2am because wtf the forum is down and there's an inscrutable error, what do??? basically sysadmining! also, much less sexy! still, i learned a lot!)

the key thing is that it's gotta be a problem that's interesting to you: as much as i love making dorky sites in PHP, half the fun was seeing other people using my stuff, and i think the era of forum-based RPGs has passed. but maybe you can apply some programming talents to something that you are interested in—maybe you want to make a silly Chrome extension to make people laugh, a la Cloud to Butt, or maybe you'd like to make a program that converts pixel art into cross-stitching patterns, maybe you want to just make a cool adventure game on those annoying graphing calculators they make you use in class, or make a script for some online game you play, or make something silly with Arduino (i once made a trash can that rolled toward me when i clapped my hands; it was fun, and way easier than you'd think!), whatever.

i know a lot of hacker-types who got their start doing ROM hacking for video games—replacing the character art or animations or whatever in old NES games. that's probably more relevant than the PHP websites, at least, and is probably a solid place to get started; in my experience those communities tend to be reasonably friendly to questions. pick a small thing you want to do & ask how to do it.

also, a somewhat unconventional path, but—once i knew how to program a bit of Python, i started doing goofy junk, like, "hey can i implemented NamedTuple from scratch,” which tends to lead to Python metaprogramming, which leads to surprising shit like "oh, stack frames are literally just Python objects and you can manually edit them in the interpreter to do deliberately horrendous/silly things, my god this language allows too much reflection and i'm having too much fun"... since Python is a lot of folks' first language these days, i thought i'd point that out, since i think this is a pretty accessible start to thinking about How Programs Actually Work under the hood. allison kaptur has some specific recommendations on how to poke around, if you wanna go that route.

it's reasonably likely you'll end up doing something "hackery" in the natural course of just working on stuff. for instance, while i was working on the IPB forum software mods, i became distressed to learn that everyone was using an INSECURE version of the software! no one was patching their shit!! i yelled at the admins about it, and they were like "well we haven't been hacked yet so it's not a problem," so i uh, decided to demonstrate a proof of concept? i downloaded some sketchy perl script, kicked it until it worked, logged in as the admins, and shitposted a bit before i logged out, y'know, to prove my point.

(they responded by banning me for two weeks, and did not patch their software. which, y'know, rip to them; they got hacked by an unrelated Turkish group two months later, and those dudes just straight-up deleted the whole website. i was a merciful god by comparison!)

anyway, even though downloading a perl script and just pointing it at a website isn't really "hacking" (it's the literal definition of script kiddie, heh)—the point is i was just experimenting a lot and trying a lot of stuff, which meant i was getting comfortable with thinking of software as not just some immutable relic, but something you can touch and prod in unexpected ways.

this dovetails into the next thing, which is like, just learn a lot of stuff. a boring conventional computer science degree will teach you a lot (provided you take it seriously and actually try to learn shit); alternatively, just taking the same classes as a boring conventional computer science degree, via edX or whatever free online thingy, will also teach you a lot. ("contributing to open source" also teaches you a lot but... hngh... is a whole can of worms; send a follow-up ask if you want that rant.)

here's where i should note that "hacking" is an impossibly broad category: the kind of person who knows how to fuck with website authentication tokens is very different than someone who writes a fuzzer, who is often quite different than someone who looks at the bug a fuzzer produces and actually writes a program that can exploit that bug... so what you focus on depends on what you're interested in. i imagine classes with names like "compilers," "operating systems," and "networking" will teach you a lot. but, like, idk, all knowledge is god-breathed and good for teaching. hell, i hear some universities these days have actual computer security classes? that's probably a good thing to look at, just to get a sense of what's out there, if you already know how to program.

also be comfortable with not knowing everything, but also, learn as you go. the bulk of my security knowledge came when i got kinda airdropped into a work team that basically hired me entirely on "potential" (lmao), and uh, prior to joining i only had the faintest idea what a hypervisor was? or the whole protection ring concept? or ioctls or sandboxing or threat models or, fuck, anything? i mostly just pestered people with like 800 questions and slowly built up a knowledge base, and remember being surprised & delighted when i went to a security conference a year later and could follow most of the talks, and when i wound up at a bar with a guy on the xbox security team and we compared our security models a bunch, and so on. there wasn't a magic moment when i "got it", i was just like, "okay huh this dude says he found a ring-0 exploit... what does that mean... okay i think i got that... why is that a big deal though... better ask somebody.." (also: reading an occasional dead tree book is a good idea. i owe my firstborn to Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development, as outdated as it is, and also O'Reilly's kookaburra book gave me a great overview of web programming back in the day, etc. you can learn a lot by just clicking around random blogs, but you’ll often end up with a lot of random little facts and no good mental scaffolding for holding it together; often, a decent book will give you that scaffolding.)

(also, it's pretty useful if you can find a knowledgable someone to pepper with random questions as you go. finding someone who will actively mentor you is tricky, but most working computery folks are happy to tell you things like "what you're doing is actually impossible, here's why," or "here's a tutorial someone told me was good for learning how to write a linux kernel module," or "here's my vague understanding of this concept you know nothing about," or "here's how you automate something to click on a link on a webpage," which tends to be handier than just google on its own.)

if you're reading this and you're like "ok cool but where's the part where i'm handed a computer and i gotta break in while going all hacker typer”—that's not the bulk of the work, alas! like, for sure, we do have fun pranking each other by trying dumb ways of stealing each other's passwords or whatever (once i stuck a keylogger in a dude's keyboard, fun times). but a lot of my security jobs have involved stuff like, "stare at this disassembly a long fuckin' time to figure out how the program pointer got all fucked up," or, "write a fuzzer that feeds a lot of randomized input to some C++ program, watch the program crash because C++ is a horrible language for writing software, go fix all the bugs," or "think Really Hard TM about all the settings and doohickeys this OS/GPU/whatever has, think about all the awful things someone could do with it, threat model and sandbox accordingly." occasionally i have done cool proof-of-concept hacks but honestly writing exploits can kinda be tedious, lol, so like, i'm only doing that if it's the only way i can get people to believe that Yes This Is Actually A Problem, Fix Your Code

"lua that's cool and all but i wanted, like, actual links and recommendations and stuff" okay, fair. here's some ideas:

microcorruption: very fun embedded security CTF; teaches you everything you need to know as you're doing it.

cryptopals crypto challenges: very fun little programming exercises that teach you a lot of fundamental cryptography concepts as you're going along! you can do these even as a bit of a n00b; i did them in Python for the lulz

the binary bomb lab is hilariously copied by, like, so many CS programs, lol, but for good reason. it's accessible and fun and is the first time most people get to feel like a real hacker! (requires you know a bit of C beforehand)

ctftime is a good way to see when new CTFs ("capture the flag"s; security-focused competitions) are coming up. or, sometimes CTFs post their source code, so you can continue trying them after the CTF is over. i liked Stripe's CTFs when they were going, because they focused on "web stuff", and "web stuff" was all i really knew at the time. if you're more interested in staring at disassembly, there's CTFs focused on that sort of thing too.

azeria has good ARM assembly & exploitation tutorials

also, like, lots of good talks out there; just watching defcon/cansecwest/etc talks until something piques your interest is very fun. i'd die on a battlefield for any of Christopher Domas's talks, but he assumes a lot of specific x86/OS knowledge, lol, so maybe don’t start with that. oh, Julia Evans's blog is honestly probably pretty good for just learning a lot of stuff and really beginner-friendly?

oh and wrt legality... idk, i haven't addressed it here since it hasn't come up in my own work much, tbh. if you're just getting started you're kind of unlikely to Break The Law without, y'know, realizing maybe you're doing something a bit gray-area? and you can cross that bridge when you come to it? Real Hacking TM is way more of a pain-in-the-ass than doing CTFs and such, and you'll learn way more with the latter, so who cares lol just do the fun thing

dee wants to keep remus and virge in the same school, so every time remus gets expelled, he moves both of them

they never stay in the same school for more than a year

this is very stressful for dee who eventually has to move around to keep up with remus’s school-switching

this is also super hard on virgil who never learns how to make friends

dee, who is always stressed and not always there, and remus, a fuck-up who couldn’t care less, become his contants

they move to a new town before virgil’s freshman year

virge and remus go to the local highschool

remus meets roman in their classes (surprise! they have ended up in the same town patton moved to earlier!!)

they don’t reconize either other (obv they were like 3)

remus chalenges roman to a fight durring lunch

virge is like “remus no” and remus is like “remus yes”

crowd gathers and roman wants to protect his pride

they fight and it gets bloody quick

roman’s older brother, logan (:O), comes rushing in and breaks it up

he reconizes remus and virge (he got good memory or sumn)

virge is like “WTF REMUS THIS IS WHY DAD HATES YOU”

and leaves

Logan is surprised pikachu face

the whole school is buzzing with gossip of new kids und log and rom

virge skips class and hides in the liberary

logan finds him after school

lo notices them and nudges ro who abruptly stops talking and looks over at dee and boys, alerting pat of their prensence

flashes of grief on pat’s face

the table is quiet before ro awkwardly picks up the conversation where he left off

dee gets a table as far away from pat &co as possible

however, he looks up once and locks eyes with patton

both tables are quiet

dee breaks the eye contact and starts talking to his boys

patton smiles sadly at his icecream

“I thing we should go home kiddos.”

at home, lo explains everything

pat nods numbly and locks himself in his bedroom

logan comforts roman

at the ice cream, dee talks to virge and remus about the play until patton leave

“so do you know them?”

virge breaks down and admits everything

remus isn’t as much as a bastrad now

dee ods calmly and they eat ice cream in silence

they next day is saturday

virge stays in his room despite remus atempts to play

remus also locks himself in his room

dee finds logan’s cell number in virgil’s backpack and calls him

surprisingly patton picks up

they talk for a while

they agree to keep the kids in the same school

“I miss you somethimes, dee.” a pause. “Your mistake.”

dee hangs up

he looks up to where virgil’s room is and sighs.

Things I regret and things I wish I had done better in pushing Diversity in Books

Probably a bit self-aggrandizing... and I’m aware of that. And I’m aware most people won’t believe me, but I have documentation. (I also pushed diversity in Korean dramas a bit, too lol, but that’s much more subtle and harder to prove.) Short version: I helped pull a lot of the strings on the internet about the discussions of diversity and writing from about 2004 (November 2004)

Loose background:

I have always been more diverse than the people around me. And I’ve always felt disaffected from being able to understand my own diversity completely as an adoptee. Being Highly Intersectional, but often disconnected, also makes me super stubborn on representation over other people.

I am also from a line of advocates on all sides of my family.

And no, I’ve never been particularly good at being “nice”. Kind, yes. Nice, no. So people have always felt split about me from the time I was born, I suppose.

Disclaimer:

Some of this might be retconning a bit... just a bit. But unintentionally. All facts are true as I can document/remember them.

Introduction:

So, I’ve always had my eyes on writing diversity, but never quite felt qualified to write it when I was younger, and being adopted, I was raised by a white family. So most of my characters from extension of exposure, ended up white and were female and a few were gay, but being ace spec, and in the dark about it, I didn’t know how to write that. (Incidentally also a sucker fro Rom Coms.) But I’m quite stubborn and quite detailed when it comes to such things, so tried my best with what I had and did not cross.

Internet hit, and frankly, I spent the majority of it on Sailor Moon in the early years. Also arguing down Adoption lawyers from using triggering statements in their “ads” to adoptive parents on listserves, etc. (Adopted to a Jewish family and Korean, so top notch arguing skills is a must. [I joke, also insider’s joke])

Nanowrimo hit, and I learned that asexuality is a real thing, which was also a part of me, but they didn’t acknowledge gray-aces until much, much later. I was inquiring about it in November 2004 (Finally looked up the date)... (so AVEN lies their butts off about that because I remember the first aces out were sex repulsed, aro aces. Not a spot of gray out there.)

Since about 2005? Nanowrimo I started compiling lists of links to various information, since it started to repeat from the previous year. Every year until about 2008-ish... I compiled links for Nanowrimo for resources on how to write various groups. The fights all went in the same exact direction.

I also from about the beginning started compiling Banned Books list by category and every year posting that thread, which was also exceedingly popular. I did it to expose the stupid reasons that books are banned, which mostly were on diversity.

I also was the one that started the “Above Below” in writing forums form. (I took it from ASMR--A Sailor Moon Romance, who would play games like that and cross referenced it with my experience at Canisius College Summer Writing Camp and used the rules from there. I did it because Nanowrimo at the time didn’t have a critique section, so me and another person discussed it in PMs first, and then I started the thread in an “other” section. (I still have the rules from the *original* post on my computer, which have since gotten corrupted.) Nanowrimo also had word limits, so I had one for first page with a strict 250 word limit and eventually after Miss Snark, one for query letters (which I’m exceedingly good at. I won Miss Snark’s contest, but for a while thought I lost, until I saw the Nanowrimo boards to show I won. lol I’m sued to rejection.)

Also started compiling the Writing Survey questions in about Year 3 and ran it, gathered statistics, etc about Nanowrimo and the writing population.

People hated me. People liked me too... since I spent a ton of time helping people. The PoC threads, out of the diversity threads, were always the most contentious. (Also in other writing forums too... often populated by white Moderators who didn’t know why associating black people watermelon and porches was racist as anything... *cough* Critique Circle *cough*)

So... given that background...

What Did I Do wrong:

- Probably shouldn’t have bit at Trolls and asked people to move it along? (OK, I can’t resist the temptation still.)

- I started with thinking it was individualistic power, not systemic. I set this on the wrong course. We should have been challenging agents and editors as much as writers from the beginning. This is my bad, (though I was not alone.) I didn’t have enough study back then. I didn’t understand how systems worked.

- I probably shouldn’t have been thinking only about privileged people writing. I think that it should be own voices first, but that privileged people and outgroups should *also* be given a chance *after* a ton of research to also write people of color. Personally, it’s been a bit overcorrrected in places, but yeah, I think the idea that we should teach outgroups... no. They need to do the work, the research, be insecure, and pick up the slack.

- I probably should have said no more often about diversity. No, you can’t write that. (But others should also have said no, but sometimes you’re hungry for representation.) Also my line of “Real People > Fiction” would have been greatly helpful back then.

- I did argue that YA was where most books are banned and most trends *start* in YA books, but the part that was also missed was that I also said that it spreads *from* YA, not that it should *stop* solely at YA. BTW, you do not have to write only YA as an author... It’s a demographic, not a genre. A lot of kids also read adult books. I did as a 13 year old. (When the YA section was 4 shelves at best) I think I should have pushed more for it to get into the adult section, too, because without the tools to see what it’s like, how is the previous generation supposed to help kids as well? Adults are not hopeless.

- I also think I should have instituted better ways of discourse around diversity, but it’s not like anyone was cooperating with it. Argue with resources, reliable sources, back it with fact, not truthiness.

- I also think I should have argued that if you have NO ONE in your life of that diversity... HANDS OFF. Not the token friend, but someone who comes around *often* to you *house* you *regularly* talk with and interact with. Being more adamant about that might have helped. If you never read anything from that group and yet still want to write them HANDS OFF. If you think all _blank_ of that group are terrible people... also HANDS OFF. If your only interaction with the country and the people is through dramas and pop culture... HANDS OFF.

- I really needed the words Implicit Bias, not just Privilege. Also needed Privilege Qualifying too. White Tears also would have been useful. Stereotype Threat... OK... I needed more Social Justice vocabulary.

- I should have learned that everyone has privilege, but it’s how you use it that matters sooner... It took me a while to get there. And I wrote it out first... as far as I know, and spread it around.

- I also have smaller regrets like... the use of Caucasian... I pressed MTV Decoded for a video on it. Also on the history of “Submissive” Asian.

- Also wish I had written a better code of conduct on how to interact with people with Diversity so they don’t get mentally drained better.

- I think I should have argued better for Diversity within, not stereotypes outside looking in. (This is currently missing from a lot of the Diversity workshops on writing--the stories that don’t hit the bell curve neatly. Fi~~~x it.)

- I also think trying to force convert authors was wrong (and is still wrong). If they do, they do, instead.... I should have bolstered support from the System itself and from authors of that identity, without locking out privileged authors that wanted to try. Let the authors that try and flop, push back flounder so others can learn from them. I don’t abide by canceling before release UNLESS there is a very good reason they shouldn’t profit. You can cancel them by not buying their book.

What I Did Right:

- I did ask Writing Forums to institute a Diversity policy that was more specific like the writing conventions. (Still looking at you Nanowrimo, Critique Circle, Absolute Write and Wattpad.) AND to have administration at the very top of the forum that was not white OR at least very educated on those topics (Head of forums should get paid... unless they started it themselves). But to have boards to review problems with diversity discussion. (And I know it’s not for everyone and it’s exhausting, but power representation is something we need.) It’s not bad to ask those in power to be educated on the problem and not make weak excuses on why they can’t do it, and then ban people for challenging them on diversity. *cough* I’m STILL asking that all writing forums are specific on diversity and prejudices and ban all prejudiced swears because from the Nanowrimo survey shit, fuck, dick, ass... are *less* offensive than prejudiced swears. And people can self-censor and can look it up.

- I know I was late to ask for it, but yeah, asking Editors and Agents to be *educated* before making a call for diversity isn’t a bad thing. (Lots of studying to get here.) I know they can’t change their sexuality, skin color, disability status, etc. BUT being able to list books from what you are asking for and ones that are not all privileged-qualifying would show you know your stuff. A quick way, BTW, to get a hold of countries is to read Folklore... I know this from lots and lots of reading and studying foreign media. Story structures, deeper beliefs, etc, can often be found there, plus they are quick to read. I know I wasn’t the first on this... Lee and Low pressed for it a lot, but I tried to extend it.

- I asked for end to end diversity. Every single part of the bookstore should have diversity in it. I’ve been going to the bookstore at least once a year since I was 13, scanning how the market has shifted and changed. I know authors counsel that by the time you see it on the shelf the fad is gone... but that’s not what I was looking for. I was looking for diversity, for gaps that people hadn’t filled yet. I want the cookbook section to have worldwide cooking. I want the economics books to have PoC names in it--even if I might never write or buy one. Because mirrors are important. I know this. If women can spread to the entire bookstore without question, then so can all of the other authors and sections. I’m still frickin’ asking for this. I know how much it hurts writers to not be able to find non-fiction books on their own identity.

- I insisted on research as the best route to get there. Not write what you know, explore what you don’t know. (But a lot of writers are lazy about research... if you are going to write diversity that’s not your own, then no.) If you’re not willing to put a year’s worth of work into deprogramming, it’s not worth your time to even touch diversity topics.

- Insisted that Diversity people are not trends. (Though I wish I’d pressed this more). Again, conquer the ENTIRE bookstore so it’s not a question. It’s an answer. Books are there to answer things in my PoV.

- I spent a lot of time trying to learn perspectives and listen to people and dissenting within.

- I don’t regret challenging We Need Diverse books for being a-holes about rolling back on the dream of diverse books end to end by saying Diversity only for YA and challenging them to do better on adoption discussions with an adoptee at the helm who is defogged. If I’m unpopular for calling them out to do better, so be it. Again, conquer the entire bookstore. Don’t be afraid to dream big so the movement has a place to go, and don’t make a movement solely for your benefit.

And personally... I think book sellers should stop trying to cater to the 40% market of male readers who read only 1 book a year by insisting on more male characters... but that’s me.

But this is me... still wishing to have my dream come true that when I go to any part of the bookstore, go to a movie theater, listen to music, that I know diversity is represented there without anyone batting an eyelash at its existence. It’s not always going to benefit me. Sometimes it might actually hurt. But I’m OK with that if I can’t leverage my privileges always... I’ll cheer for it... because it means someone who was like me as a kid, and them as an adult can finally see themselves in the media they consume. And truly, this lifts my heart.

After finally finishing all the chalices, I have developed the Official Tea™ on all the chalice bosses. This is one hundred and ten percent objective and I am completely right.

1. Pthumerian Descendant. The perfect balance of a boss. This isn’t as great as Kos, Gascoigne, Maria, or any of the story mode greats, but this fight stands out as the most challenging without either being a total parry fest or a beasty clusterfuck. The patterns are hard to read and the timings are hard to nail down, making this fight much more engaging than the standard hunter-type fights. The only thing I don’t like is his boomerang move thing, since he’s gotten some very cheeky kills on me through it, but whatever. That’s mostly my fault.

2. Pthumerian Elder. How many times do we gotta teach you this lesson, old man?? Sit down smh. He comin’, oh lord. He fuckin’ swinging! He’s gonna smack ya with that flaming scythe!!! Oh shit wait he transformed it into a flame crossbow! This old man has style.

3. Undead Giant, Chain variant specifically. It’s an interesting change of pace, since he’s not very aggressive at all so you’re playing offence instead of defence. Figuring out how to safely get in at all is fun, though it can be a really slow fight if you play it safe.

4. Keeper of the Old Lords. Cool hat!!!!!! Similar to Forgotten Madmen in that it’s a fairly standard hunter fight where you just spam viscerals, but it’s neat. :) Defiled version is notable for being the only boss in that chalice that doesn’t fucking suck.

5. Forgotten Madmen. I’m a sucker for PvE hunter fights so this one delivers. Another dude swooces in to give you some combo slaps. The armor they give is very cool. I like shlapping around with the snake scarf.

6. Bloodletting Beast. Thicc boy. He has a lot of slaps to give you. A great iteration of the standard beast boss. The headless version later on gets a special shout-out for being an actually interesting reused boss, since it’s got some new moves that change it up a bit. Plus the weird snake thing popping out is uhhhhh gross in the best way

7. Beast-possessed Soul. Isn’t this that random dude at the bottom of the Healing Church Workshop? I always killed him with a backstab into a visceral before he could even do anything so it’s nice that they fleshed him out into an actual boss. Nothing too complex here, just a nice and simple fight.

8. Blood-starved Beast. The arena gimmick of all that poison water is an interesting addition-- you’re basically always going to be poisoned by the time you get to the final phase. Kind of annoying but it’s interesting enough and the fight was solid enough as is.

9. Merciless Watchers. I find these funny little dudes to be endearing despite being weirdly easy. They appear as pretty regular enemies in later chalices which is cool, good sense of progression. I dunno they’re just neat :)

10. Yarnham, Queen of Pthumuru. The most narratively relevant boss, which is very cool, and the gimmick is interesting, but ultimately it’s, uh… It feels like this boss should have happened a lot earlier? By the time you get to the final chalice, you’ve already been through so much shit that this is a walk in the park. Hell, the two bosses right before her were way harder. I’ve literally never had a problem with this fight. All you gotta do is spam R1. Honestly only saved by being cool and not being offensively annoying in any way.

11. Ebrietas. Weird slug insect beast thing? Who is she. I used two summons for this fight and it took like twenty seconds so uhhhhh lol

12.Loran Darkbeast. Paarl V2. Not a bad fight persay, but it’s not particularly interesting outside of getting punched in the face with electricity. Weirdly easy if you get some momentum going. Kind of just a standard beast boss honestly, but at least this time it’s actually challenging unlike story Paarl.

13. Abhorrent Beast. Suspicious Beggar’s wild twin brother. Cool design, but it’s really obvious he was never meant to be a boss since the fight’s basically the same thing the whole way through. Fighting this multiple times in the fixed dungeons was… annoying. I fought him twice in a row due to the chalice route I chose.

14. Watchdog of the Old Lords. First fight is fun, you fight a big fire dog. He slaps you around like a treat ball a bit as monsters often do with hunters. Defiled version is trash, though. Fire damage barely scales with the HP loss so you just die a lot. Encourages cheesy play, which is always bad.

15. Rom. Did we really need a second iteration of the world’s least spidery spider? No. Now it’s just worse because it has none of the narrative meaning or the cool setting.

16. Amygdala. While I don’t necessarily like this fight much anyway, the Defiled chalice version is incredibly awful. The amount of one-shots this boss has is just infuriating, and the only consistently viable strategies are incredibly cheesy and tedious. The only reason this isn’t at the bottom is because it’s an actual boss that poses actual challenge compared to the next four.

17. Celestial Emissary. This guy is actually a threat for once, unlike how he is in the main story, but even then he’s still really easy. The only way you’re gonna die is if you’re not even trying.

18. Loran Silverbeast. Just a wolf guy. At least it’s one of the less bad enemies that they reused as a boss for some reason.

19. Maneater Boar. The fact that they stopped caring at this point really just jumps out. The pigs were scary when you meet them for like, the first time you ever play Bloodborne, but now they’re just… bad.

20. Brainsucker. This squid boy isn’t even a boss! He has no talent. Awful.

Before watching Crazy Rich Asians, I decided to read a bunch of reviews, articles and responses to the film. Most had given it positive reviews, but there were negative reviews on IMDB regarding the lack of caucasian representation (well duh), too cliched, too stereotyped and not funny. Essentially, it’s still a rom-com, which I never expect great reviews for, so I went in with no expectations.

Just watched Crazy Rich Asians and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In general, I do enjoy rom-coms if there’s a decent storyline, good chemistry and if it’s funny.

Not sure I can really judge the ‘rich’ storyline, because I don’t know how the rich live their lives, let alone the super rich. I did think it was a bit outrageous how they would have shopping spree bachelorette activities, parties on cargo ships or fly helicopters out to deserted islands, but what would I know about having money, lol.

Even though it may seem stereotyped, it’s still realistic. Most Asian parents I know still prefer their kids marry ‘ga gi nang’ (their own people) and even some who are still classist; the latter less common. I enjoyed how ‘Asian’ the film was; lah, alamak, ga gi nang, ang moh, asian radio, mentions of filial piety, etc. To me, these were the funniest parts of the film and you’d only get it if you understood the references. Yes, the movie was your typical cliched rom-com, but people who like rom-coms like them for a reason.

I also loved the casting, especially Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh. Gemma Chan was captivating and stunning. Seeing Harry Shum Jr was also an unexpected surprise :) Usually, my problem with Asian casting in Hollywood films is that it’s usually a Korean person playing a Chinese or Vietnamese character. I mean, that could just be because most of the Asian-American actors are Korean? I don’t know, but we all don’t look the same, so I liked how most of the cast were Chinese considering it’s set in Singapore. Ken Jeong was the only Korean actor that I noticed playing a Chinese Singaporean.

I read that Coldplay’s Yellow was going to be used in the film, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear a Chinese version of the song instead. Also enjoyed the Cantonese version of Material Girl and the cover of Can’t Help Falling In Love during the wedding scene (which was amazing).

Casting; good, Asian references; good, soundtrack; good. All in all; enjoyable.

While Nintendo IS overzealous against the Rom Sites, lets not pretend that the Rom Sites are 100% guilt free heroes: some of them DID host Roms of the stuff Nintendo still actively distribute like 3DS games. There is a massive difference between hosting games that are rare/unlikely to resold/too pricey to buy and hosting games that are common/easy to buy. The problem is that Nintendo is attacking BOTH with the same zeal. Plus Nintendo needs to understand that not all people just want free games.

I dunno why you’re messaging this to me instead of the OP of that post, tho? Especially since I literally never said any of that? Like umm I completely agree with the fact that pirating games you could easily buy is bullshit, I never said it wasnt. Nobody arguing for emuparadise said this, as far as I know. It’s 100% “that was goddamn overzealous, you’re attacking both with the same zeal”.

Tho I have downloaded roms of modern games before, but only when its a game I already own and I just wanted a form of it that I could record for lets plays, cos capture cards are super expensive and there’s no shops as far as I know that do it for a european 3DS. Also sometimes have downloaded roms cos i wanna make rom hacks or just open them up and look at how they work to learn new things about my favourite series! Like there’s stuff like Boundary Break and The Cutting Room Floor who find unused content and interesting details that would otherwise have gone unseen. And TCRF paid loads to snag a rare pokemon beta rom cartridge off ebay and had hundreds of people working non stop to unpack it IMMEDIATELY and even translate all the japanese! This was content that would have never been seen by ANYONE if not for emulation communities!

Also like.. sometimes people do bootleg games without necessarily having evil motives. Like sometimes when i was really poor I made stupid decisions and downloaded bootleg roms of games that i couldnt afford. When I grew up and understood more about how wrong it was, I stopped! My dad was a really nasty bastard and he always used to rent games from blockbuster and then rip the roms or burn the discs to use on a chipped playstation, then just return them immediately and get a full game for £3. That was how we got ALL our games as kids, I was raised in that sort of stupid environment and those are definately the kind of rom-users that I don’t support.

But like still.. sometimes.. downloading like one rom when you’re legit broke is maybe not so evil. Whenever I did that during my one year in and out of homelessness, i always used to treat it like an “unofficial demo” and like.. impose limits on myself so i wouldnt allow myself to play the whole game and steal the whole experience. It was just ‘i cant afford it right now, i will try the first level and see if i want to buy it. I spent the next few years just buying physical copies of all of those games/films, even the ones I didnt like! I used rom versions of RPGmaker for years and then as soon as i had a better financial situation I bought the newest most expensive version and three more copies for all of my friends! And like in the case of games that are out of print now but werent out of print when I pirated them, I’ll buy a bunch of other stuff that the company made in order to support them.

SO YEAH, Bunni’s Personal Rules of Roms!

* If you already own a legit copy of the game, you are allowed to download a rom of it. You already paid for it, after all.* If the game is impossible to buy anymore and roms are the only way to play it, there is nothing wrong with that rom.* Fan translations are in the same category, If it can’t be bought in your country then you really have no other choice if you want to play it. And from experience, whenever these games finally get dubbed years later they get a huge amount of sales from everyone who played the fan translation! Like i still cannot believe they finally released Princess Maker in english like 15 years after the original DOS version?? The official translation was really grammatically bad but i was still so happy to be able to support the official company!* Rom hacking is fun and cool and do lots of it, yes. Its a fan work and it comes from people’s love of the game! But still please only do it if you own a legit copy of the original game!* If you’re too broke to get a game and you’re being tempted to use a rom, treat it like a “demo”. You can play it now but you have to buy it when you do have the money! If you really love this game you’ll want to support the creator, yo! No matter how long it takes! It took me like five years to be able to finally buy rpgmaker and god damn it was satisfying to finally get that off my conscience, lol* Tho if the game’s creator is some sort of absolute fucknozzle that you dont want to support with your money, then its potentially arguable that it’s okay to use a rom. But trying to get a preowned copy or watching a lets play is still better! Also like don’t do this unless its a REALLY justifiable cause. Like not just “i dont like this guy” but “there is actual proof he has made holocaust denying tweets/used his fame to advocate for gay conversion therapy/taken nude photos of his coworkers/embezzled money to make the game/etc”.* Roms of demos or preview discs or other content that was already free = literally no reason why nintendo should take that down. It’s just an archive of important moments in the game’s history!* Roms of illegal bootlegs also make no sense to be taken down in this blanket ban. Like yo the console creators literally do not own those or make any money off of them, and its GOOD that people arent giving money to the bootleggers! (And, again, its the kind of videogame history that would be easily lost without rom dumps.)

Also lol srsly why cant nintendo just say ‘take down all the roms of games that are currently available for purchase, you can keep all the archived old ones’. Like that would solve the problem without pissing off the fanbase! or seriously yo just add more of those unavailable games to the virtual console...

Music Ask - Queen Edition

@callmetippytumbles tagged me on this, stating that she was sure there would be a Queen song for every question on this ask. Well Ima prove her right! 😂

So since they’re all going to be Queen (unless otherwise specified), I’m going to replace band name with album name instead.

Part of me loves this song, but part of me is also is uneasy about it. The song is supposed to be from the PoV of an unspecified Native American tribe, speaking of how colonization has destroyed everything they have stood and lived for - but it’s written by a British white man, Brian May - and we have no idea whether he consulted a Native American for this or not. If he hadn’t, or hadn’t gotten consent, it would be him speaking in the voice of the oppressed while still holding the privilege of being White…and that’s a little disturbing. I love the song, and Brian May is my favourite Queen member, but I can’t ignore that this song has problems.

Besides being an ace guitarist, Brian May is also an Astrophysicist with a Doctorate!! xD And this song really shows us his background in that area: it’s fashioned in the song tradition of a sea shanty, but is about outer space and time relativity. I called this "the plot of Interstellar, 39 years before Interstellar”.

10: A song that makes you sad:

🎶Mother Love🎶 from Made in Heaven.

This is spoken of as being the last song Freddie ever recorded before he died, and his vocals are OFF-THE-ROOF powerful here. Two verses are sung by Freddie, and the last is sung by Brian May, who co-wrote the song (because Freddie felt too worn and weak and tired to continue recording, and told Brian he would return and do the rest. He never did). To hear Brian complete the song because Freddie has gone…is quite heartbreaking, actually. I’d definitely recommend everyone listen to this gem.

11: A song that you never get tired of:

What I love about Queen is how appreciative they are of their overseas fans, esp those who loved them at the very start of their career. Way before Bohemian Rhapsody placed Queen on the map, they had a very devoted fanbase in Japan, and I believe this song was written specially for them. This was the first ever recording we have of Freddie Mercury, under the name of Larry Lurex. The original was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. A sampling of it is used at the very end of Mother Love, as a way of rewinding to the beginning…a symbolic goodbye to Freddie by going back to the first words that sparked his career.

Damn. I’m emotional now. 😭😭

16: One of your favorite classic songs:

Most people would go for 🎶Bohemian Rhapsody🎶 - and for good reason - but I think 🎶Prophet’s Song🎶 from the same album is equally deserving of this. It’s beautiful, has a lot of echoes that make it surreal and ethereal to me, and very power-packed vocals and lyrics.

17: A song that you’d sing a duet to on karaoke:

🎶Love of My Life🎶 from A Night At The Opera.

The fun thing about any Queen concert is that the audience has always been as much participant as spectator. LoML is one of the few ballads that the band used to interact with the audience, who were always ready to sing along. Freddie started this tradition in his live concerts, and Brian carried it on when he and Roger went back to touring as Queen +. To this day, you will always find a Queen audience being as involved in this song as the people on stage. It’s beautiful to watch. No Queen concert is complete without the audience crooning this ballad.

This happens to be one of Freddie’s last written compositions, and it’s unbelievably beautiful and dreamy. He had very few months left to live when he wrote this gem of a song, and there’s so much joy and hope and tranquility in it, and the moment you listen you will inevitably feel a sense of peace washing over you. I can imagine sitting by a lake alone in Switzerland, looking out at the sky and the snow, just listening to the song and basking in all it has to offer.

This is also a very hope-filled song, composed by Freddie shortly after he was diagnosed and told he had very little time left. It’s a very idealistic view of the world, but yeah I really like this one too. Just not as much as I like A Winter’s Tale. 😂

On one level it’s about a girl who cannot see and the boy who loves her. On another I feel like it can also be about the sadness of unrequited love in general, and of an almost-relationship.

I can be a spectacularly petty bitch sometimes, and this number can be so vicious it satisfies those vengeful, bitchy parts of me lol. A lot of the lines in this song are particularly cutting, and it should be because it was written for someone who was fleecing the band dry in their early days.

23: A song that you think everybody should listen to:

🎶Track 13/Untitled🎶 from Made in Heaven.

Most people might be put off by this track because it’s 22:33 whopping minutes long, and it’s an endless loop of sounds but OMG is it trippy. Mostly a lot of synthetic, loops, Freddie saying words, and this overall ethereal, otherworldly vibe. Most Queen fans interpret this piece as a depiction of Freddie’s journey to heaven, and call it “Ascension”. Kind of like a requiem, a fitting goodbye to Freddie. I can see why. I mean I can always lie down, close my eyes and immerse myself in the tranquility of this track. All 22.33 minutes of it. It’s a strange recommendation, but in my mind a fitting one.

24: A song by a band/group you wish were still together:

🎶The Show Must Go On🎶 from Innuendo.

Queen aren’t together because their frontman passed away, not entirely out of choice 😟 (okay and John Deacon didn’t want to be involved anymore later on). This was written and composed by Brian May, but Freddie really makes this song his own in the singing. The way he hits some of those notes - at that stage in his life - is spine tingling.

LOVE IS DEATH!!!

Love is one of the most wonderful things in the world. Love is life. Love is all the great things that you hear in music or see in your favorite rom-com. We need more love in this world with all the hate. But for some or maybe just me love also eventually feels like death.

Now don’t get me wrong, I believe in love and all the beautiful things it brings (ha ha Bars!). The things it inspires, the things it can endure, but I also see the pitfalls of love. And if you say, ”love has no pitfalls, or then you weren’t truly in love". You honestly are part of the problem. Nothing in life is without unintended consequences and too much of anything is bad for you. And maybe this idealistic belief about love probably is where the problem lies. Maybe the problem is in the truths that go unspoken, the lies we tell about love. Because somehow being honest about something for many means your ruining the fantasy. But as much as I love a good fantasy ;). We do live in reality. And the reality is Love is death.

It is the death of the individual. Now I get it, in a relationship, union, marriage etc. is the coming together of two individuals, but no one every talks about how that union gets stronger the individuals are dying. I’m not saying that this is a bad thing or good thing. I am saying it is a thing. It’s the reality. The more involved and deeper the love grows, the more of you starts to die. You start doing less and less as individuals. Certain things that were fine in the beginning subsequently are no longer ok. You start to have to be places you don’t want to be, doing things you don’t want to do. And piece by piece your individual is dying a slow death. Compromise is killing you. No matter how much we love our new life in this union, we loved our individual self first. We are watching, it die in front of us, and in those times when we crave that feeling of being an individual, being spontaneous, we lash out. We lash out because we are fighting the death of ourselves. We are fighting for life. I truly believe you can love something to death. Maybe the way we view relationships is doing just that, loving our individual selves to death. And ironically, both parties are dying.

Personally, I know that is how I can feel at times. In all honesty, it probably has been the part of the reason I’ve left certain relationships ( both romantic, and platonic). I know I have a very different outlook on many things. I genuinely try to look at things objectively, and without emotion. And I really think my gift and curse is that I analyze everything. I try to learn from others as well as my own experiences. And I’m a self analyzer to a fault. And when I’ve self analyzed I didn’t like how far my individual had died in past relationships. And when I feel like I’m too far gone, I got out to reclaim self, or my perception of self. And I say perception because self evaluation doesn’t always allow for complete honesty. So for me there in lies part of the problem. The eternal desire for self-preservation.

And maybe I have a skewed view of love. I will concede that what loved look like for me in my formative years always looked “uncomfortable”. It looked uncomfortable on many levels. Any kid thinks their parents showing love to each other is uncomfortable because they are your parents and when you get to a certain age who wants to think of their parents in that way. YUCK!! But, I think it was more than that for me. My dad wasn’t a man who typically wanted to say words like I Love you. Not that he didn’t, but his way of showing love was more of what he would do for you not what he said to you. My dad would more likely than not say to my mother ” don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” as opposed to I love you when they parted. I guess the black version of ”ditto" (pardon the movie Ghost reference). Fast forward to adult me, my girlfriend just the other day said you can’t just say I love you can you? And honestly, maybe I cant because I rarely do. And it is not just her, it’s with my mother, and even my daughter sometimes. And it isn’t because I don’t, It’s because I’m more like my father than I ever want to admit lol. My expression is not through my words, it through the lengths I’m willing to go to for you. It’s also largely because for the most part it looked so uncomfortable or unnatural early on that it is uncomfortable for me now. Especially when it is not accompanied by any passion.

I guess I feel like love also kills passion too. Nothing is more passionate and memorable than the first time someone says they love you. Most people can remember that day vividly, or the day he proposed, or the day you got married. But those are milestones. I talking the monotony of love killing passion. Or in the same vain the monotony of relationships killing passion. People will say that people who work in their passion love what they do and are some of the most successful people. I agree, but there is something intrinsically different with love and passion in a relationship. In my estimation, the difference is time away. You see those successful people very often take time away from their “passions” and even pursue other “passions”. But rarely do people take time away from their relationships. This is probably why friendships tend to be some of the longest running relationships for humans. We don’t have to see them everyday. In fact as you get older you see them less and less frequently. Romantic relationships are the opposite, you see them more and more frequently as time goes on. And the love is there but the passion is dying. The I love you’s are still therer, but there is no passion there any more. And I believe it’s because love has killed it.

Maybe we get so on auto pilot that we loset that passion as we are losing our selves. Maybe we need to set recharge reminders for our relationships. I don’t know. Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way (boy I hope not). I love love and all the positive it brings, but I also hate everything that it kills. Maybe we really do have this love thing all wrong. Maybe getting lost in someone else is great in the moment, but not a sustainable in the long term. I mean too much of anything good is bad for us. And maybe we are loving each other to death.

Hi, anon! Sorry for taking so long to respond but I’ve been scouring all of my previously read fics and the ones in my TBR folder to see what I can recommend to you. While I haven’t read all of these, I've skimmed them all enough to the point where they’re written in a style I like(I’m not big on script format or first person fics). Anyway, here is what I was able to dig up for you!

Nowhere But Lost by Zenkindoflove

Author Summary: Hyde is cynical, depressed, alone, and would really like to keep it that way. But what happens when something inside of him resurfaces and is more than unhappy about his current living arrangements? JH, ED COMPLETE!

My Thoughts: This is seriously one of my all-time favorites. Characterization is great, the plot is great, JH is so fucking cute, and there isn’t much to complain about when it comes to the writing. While this plot isn’t THAT unique, it really doesn’t matter. PLEASE READ!

Outside Looking In by rebeldivaluv

Author Summary: Interconnected vignettes telling key moments in Jackie and Hyde’s relationship, as viewed by the people who know them best.

My Thoughts: Out of all the fics I’ve read, this seriously might be my absolute favorite. The characterization is really spot on, the characters are funny, the writing/story is amazing, and I get everything I want to see with JH. This one is pretty fluffy, which I can’t complain about. I’m really impressed that the author was able to craft a fluffy fic where JH have to get back together, but there’s no angst that makes your heart hurt. I really enjoy reading from other characters perspectives and how they see JH interact in different situations. Cannot recommend enough!

Steven Who? by kezztip

Author Summary: Set just after Misfire Season 8 – Jackie’s world tumbles in on her when she realizes it is really over for her and Hyde and seeks to escape how awful her reality has become. The method of that escape is pure Jackie

My Thoughts: A perfect mix of angsty, funny, and sweet. kezztip is the queen of writing season 8 fics

Come Clarity by Zenkindoflove

Author Summary: Twenty years is a long time to stay gone…

My Thoughts: I personally find this to be the most accurate post season 8 fic where more than 3 years have passed. I’ve never found it believable in other post-season 8 fics where Hyde has a significant other that isn’t Jackie. Jackie changed the game for him so I don’t see him able to fully/truly commit to someone else. This fic is beautiful, cute, funny, and JH is in their purest form. I also enjoy that the author didn’t have the story focus on them talking through their issues from their last breakup, it was more so on reconciliation and finding each other. I wouldn’t say this fic is fluff, but I also wouldn’t say that it’s angsty. Please read it though lol

20 Questions by ShanghaiLily

Author Summary: Just after New Year’s day in 1980, Jackie Burkhart decides to disappear from the basement to save her sanity. When Xmas rolls around and the Formans beg Jackie to attend their party, she ends up involved in an elaborate game of 20 Questions with Hyde that could change both of their lives. T-rated w/ some M chapters. Story is COMPLETE! This one is for the Zennies who hate Season 8!

My Thoughts: This story is really enjoyable, but not perfect. This author tends to be really hit or miss with the characterization of the characters so it can be slightly irritating. Even though how JH and their relationship is described can be frustrating, the story is good enough to look past it. This story just has a really creative way of getting JH back together

The Morning After by ShanghaiLily

Author Summary: Jackie goes to Las Vegas for Fez’s wedding, drinks a little too much, and then wakes up in married to the last person she ever thought would commit to her. This is what happens the morning after.

My Thoughts: Like I mentioned earlier, this author really has hit-or-miss characterization. I really like this fic though because I’m a sucker for Hyde not only being a complete sap over Jackie, but it’s nice to see him kiss her ass. Let’s be real, we all deserve it after the travesty of season 8

That’s My Baby by kezztip

Author Summary: This is a JH story with a twist instead of the wedding and baby being the happy ending, it’s going to be the rocky start. All of you who love to watch Jackie outzen Hyde will be on board with this one.

My Thoughts: This is definitely my favorite kezztip fic. Jackie is so strong in this fic, which I can never get enough of. The author really has Donna grovel to Jackie as well because Donna is TERRIBLE to her in season 8. The writing and characterization are just so well done in this story. I seriously cannot stress that enough! I find it to be the most realistic JH reunion fic post-season 8 because of Jackie’s attitudes towards the gang, her new life/job, and her new outlook on life. After Fez, I can really see her shutting down her hopeless romantic side so she can focus on something she can control; like work. The middle of the fic kind of drags because it’s very clear what the author intends to do, but it quickly picks back up once that part of the story is resolved. This is a must read, especially with what you’re looking for!

The Right Road Lost by zpplnchick

Author Summary: After a car accident, Hyde wakes up to a twisted version of reality he comes to find is actual hell and with no memory of how he got there, a hell that Jackie’s been living in for the past few months. Set during Season 8, shortly after “Sweet Lady”.

My Thoughts: A more detailed, drawn-out, and angstier version of “Nowhere But Lost”

The Tough Get Going by kezztip

Author Summary: What if Jackie went back to her job in Chicago instead of sticking around Point Place to take Hyde’s crap? Say hello again to the strong, determined Jackie we saw glimpses of in Season 7 as she finds a new love but then is pursued by her old love JH AU

My Thoughts: !STRONG JACKIE! and the plot kind of reminds me of a rom-com

Made Bare by mistymountainhop

Author Summary: A heartbroken Hyde considers his relationship with Jackie kaput. Too bad Jackie sees it differently. She intends to get a proper resolution with him, but breaking through his hostility—and getting past his wife—may well prove impossible

My Thoughts: Noone understands JH better. Period.

November Rain by luvcali76

Author Summary: JH Post Season 8. A torrid encounter on Halloween night, 1984, leads ex-couple, Jackie and Hyde, to spend the next month reevaluating their past.

My Thoughts: *sigh* I really hesitate adding this to my list because I really hate this fic. The only thing I like about it is the last chapter, but even that is eh. This is a really popular fic in the fandom, but it’s definitely not for me. I find it too angsty, I don’t buy Hyde in another serious romantic relationship, and I don’t buy Jackie cheating. There’s a trend in some JH fics where they have Jackie cheat on whoever she’s with so she can have these one-night-stands with Hyde. It’s not in Jackie to cheat, no matter who it’s with. It bothers me and the plot isn’t good enough for me to look past it. It’s super angsty too, which also aren’t my favorite so maybe that’s why I don’t like it so much. I’m adding it to the list though because many people do like it, and you may be one of them!

Imagine by heatherlea75

Author Summary: 1980 has been a lousy year for the entire gang, particularly Hyde and Jackie. When a beloved cultural icon dies, the two take an impulsive trip to New York, together. While there, they remember old impressions of one another and discover new things about themselves

My Thoughts: While this is a JH classic in the fandom and a ton of people love it, I’m not the biggest fan. One of the main problems I had with it was I found Jackie acting way too desperate to appease Hyde after all he had done to her in season 8. It is important to note that the writing is solid and there were parts of the story that I did enjoy. While it may not be my cup of tea, you may like it!

Chasing the Time by pastelpink

Author Summary: Everything was different apart from one thing: Jackie still loved Hyde. (Set during Season 8)

Cliches and Things They Say by heatherlea75

Author Summary: Jackie is looking forward to the new direction her life has taken. Hyde is happy with the same old, same old of his. But when once faces a familiar and seemingly inevitable situation, and the other an unexpected dressing down, both reevaluate their lives.

My Thoughts: I’m surprised that I haven’t read this yet, but I found it buried down deep in my TBR folder. The writing is solid, there’s definite angst, and you’ll definitely get the ending you’re looking for!

Misguided Ghosts by JoyfulHeartEO

Author Summary: The gang has left, Jackie and Hyde are the only ones left. But after Sam left they stopped talking. When something happens to Jackie will Hyde be there for her? Or will he be selfish and only help himself. Its time to grow up, but will he?

My Thoughts: While this fic is incomplete and not the best written, there’s a super sweet Hyde in it which is always a fun thing

Life As A House by kezztip

Author Summary: A Crossover with the movie - Jackie’s Uncle George invites her to spend the summer with him to help with a ‘special project’. She agees but she will get more than she bargained for when she finds out the real reason behind her Uncle’s invitation.

My Thoughts: kezztip is one of my favorite fanfic authors for season 8 related fics. She usually crafts a strong Jackie who stands up for herself, something that we didn’t get to see in season 8. While this isn’t the best fic she’s written, it’s still worth a read!

My Thoughts: This is such a good fic! There’s romance, crime, mystery, and plenty of drama! I’m really picky about season 8 fics, especially if Sam is in it. The author was really creative with this story, so I highly recommend!

Oh boy, you have asked The Question! I’m a major video games nerd, and there are so many I love… if I had to choose a single one, I’d implode from the pressure.

This post is going to be LONG (sorry), so I’ll put the most important part first: currently, I am in the process of making a game of my own. It takes ages because other than a couple of people who helped me out with music and sound, I’m pretty much on my own. But we’ll get there eventually, just you wait. The working title is City Under Siege, and it’s a visual novel mixed with strategy and dating sim elements. Basically, you play as a General who arrives to save the besieged city, you meet local resindents, you investigate who started the war and why, etc, and naturally you can fall in love with almost any of the characters you meet, including the enemy general. I’m so excited to write that game!

Now, on to the actual games I play… putting that under the cut, because the post is super long, and I don’t want to clutter anyone’s dashboard too much.

My absolute favorite series has to be the Sims, The Sims 2 and The Sims 4 in particular. TS2 allows virtually unlimited control when you create your character’s face, something the latter games lack; the animations quality is also top-notch, the smallest things like getting in/out of the car, taking the frying pan out of the kitchen drawer, all kinds of things are animated. The Sims 3 is a step back in that regard, although it offers some spectacular building tools, probably the best in the series, but I don’t really like building stuff. So. Currently, TS2 cannot be run properly on my computer, so I’m playing TS4 which is actually good, it had body diversity and trans gender options (that last part solidified my love for it).

There is one sims family I’ve been playing for 9 years, almost a decade. Five generations with an accompanying story. I love them so much, they’re like my own family at this point.

I love BioWare games for their intricate stories and quality writing.

Jade Empire is the best in that regard, the story is rich and complex, all the choices are truly difficult because they all have moral reasoning behind every option. The music, the colorful graphics, everything in that game is so enjoyable! I would sell my soul for a good sequel tbh.

Dragon Age 2 is one of my all-time favorite games, again, for its writing. Sure, it’s a little unpolished in parts, but ultimately, I find the story very nuanced and multi-faceted. It shows how true evil can hide behind benevolence, and the finale is tragic and brilliant in that tragedy.

Mass Effect trilogy is pretty good, although I usually prefer fantasy to Sci-Fi. It raises some interesting questions, especially ME3, regarding sentience and how far “the good guys” are willing to go for survival, what makes us people, etc. When I watched that recent “Annihilation” movie, I kept thinking I saw those themes explored in Mass Effect, lol.

I love visual novels, too! One VN that I cannot recommend enough is Solstice by MoaCube. IT IS SO GOOD. Brilliant writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat, the intrigue, the moral complexity, and of course the stunning art… one of my favorite games ever, definitely! I especially love the Kala subplot there: a knowledge so powerful, even asking too many questions about it can drive you mad…

Coming Out On Top is a really fun game, as well as Dream Daddy. Both are gay VNs, and both have interesting characters and hilarious cutting-edge humor. The light tone, the lovely art, they’re the fluffy rom-coms you never knew you needed until you played them.

Most Choice of… games are fun if you like text games (which I do). They’re more like interactive novels, really. My favorites are Zombie Exodus; Affairs of the Court: Choice of Romance; Pendragon Rising.

Oh, I also love old adventure games like Sierra’s and Lucas Arts’ ones, and recently Telltale. The Day of the Tentacle and the Monkey Island series were a big part of my childhood, they helped me learn English, and overall they’re just very fun, witty, beautiful games. The remastered versions are even available for mobile phones, I think.

Technobabylon and Shardlight are great adventure games. Powerful emotional stories. A must-play if you like adventure games and/or cyberpunk.

The Legend of Kyrandia series is one of my favorites, too. The second game in the series, Hand of Fate, is probably the best one due to its humor and the peculiar game mechanic where you get to make magic potions.

I’ve recently played Expeditions: Viking, and while it might be not my favorite game yet, the start is rather promising. It has its problems, which I’m not sure I should focus on. It’s time-consuming due to its tactical focus, a single fight takes 10 minutes at the very least. I haven’t managed to finish it yet, but the beginning of the game looks promising.

When it comes to strategies, I love Age of Mythology and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. Don’t let the titles confuse you, they’re completely different games. AoM is a real-time strategy, while AoW:SM is turn-based. In AoM, you meet a wonderful Queen Amanra (incidentally voiced by the same voice actress who plays Meredith in Dragon Age 2) and travel through Ancient Greece, Egypt, Norse lands, and in the latest DLC even China. Very fun. In AoW:SM, you play as a wizard in a war against shadow demons; not much in terms of story, but the soundtrack is one of the best I have ever heard in my life!! I even bought it separately, which I never do. That music is so good, it’s a balm that cures a wounded soul.

I could go on and on, because I have barely scratched the surface of the games I love, these are the bare essentials… but this post is too long as it is.
