What if Human!Au
Janus is the father of Virgil and Remus
Patton is the father of Logan and Roman
Logan and Roman are both adopted, as is Remus but Virgil is the bio son of Janus and unnamed ex. The foster house Roman and Remus were in refused to advertise them as siblings as Remus was a "problem child" and Roman was a "golden boy" so Patton and Janus had no idea they were seperating twins.
A lot more under the cut:
There's always music playing in Janus' house, every day he comes home and puts on a jazz or classical record on the old record player he got from an antique store. On relaxed days Janus will come home, put on a record, and read on his armchair with Virgil listening to the music on his lap and Remus drawing at his feet.
Patton makes sure there's always fresh pastries in the Hart household. There's never a limit to how much they can eat as long as they eat an actual meal along with it. Logan always offers to do the measurements and Roman doesn't let anyone else do the mixing. It's a good day when there's flour everywhere, at least one egg got dropped by Roman, and there's warm cookies on the cooling rack.
Logan talks and talks to Roman who writes and writes about what he's told and they excitedly present their work to Patton who is always chest-bursting proud no matter what. Roman and Logan only ever fight when they play together and Roman's ideas are too fanciful for Logan and Logan's ideas are too boring for Roman. Only Patton can settle those arguments by either distracting them with something else or saying "actually, that can work if you do this!"
Virgil is really reserved around Remus at first, clinging to Janus' leg whenever he was near, but then Remus showed him his drawings of monsters and demons and Virgil pointed out a spider and then they were best friends. One day Janus gets called to the school because Remus punched a kid because they were bullying Virgil for crying over a spider and Janus makes this big act of being disappointed and saying "I'll make sure he learns his lesson" for the principal when really he takes them both out for ice cream afterwards.
Janus takes Virgil out record shopping as he refines his music taste, buying him whatever records he wants. As a birthday present Janus and Remus buy and paint a record player for Virgil's room. Whenever Remus runs out of paint or pencils Janus takes him to all the art stores he can and buys like a year's worth of supplies. The best gift he ever got wasn't even for a special occasion, on a whim Virgil composed a playlist for one of Remus' smaller sketchbooks and Janus payed someone to press a vinyl of it with the cover art being the cover of the sketchbook. They have movie nights on an old projector of classic slasher films.
Patton makes days of things. Roman wants to see a play? They're going to the mall afterwards and maybe even going to the aquarium. Logan wants to see the meteor shower that night? They're watching documentaries about deep space objects and meteorites all day until it's time to star gaze. Unlike in the Lis household where the main love language is quality time the Harts excell in gift giving and acts of service. Logan got the box set for all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works and a poster of the observable universe on a random Tuesday and Saint Patrick's Day respectively. Roman comes home one day to see all of his scripts edited in eraseable ink and his favorite sweets on the kitchen table. Patton never gets tired of telling them stories at night, taking suggestions from both kids and expertly weaving a tale of magic and science and evolutionary pathways of dragons until both are asleep.
The kids meet in high school and Roman and Remus immediately have a bond. They don't recognize eachother as brothers yet but there's something there that they both feel. They write comics together and commonly argue about the plot and designs, but their relationship never really falters. Virgil attaches himself to Remus' side and because of that meets Logan. Their bond strikes much slower than the twins' but eventually Logan becomes the #1 person Virgil goes to when he's having a panic attack or anxious about something: whether it's talking him through excersices or just being present Virgil always thanks him with a song recommendation or a sneak peak of a song he's writing.
Janus comes home from work (defense attorney) to Remus' embellished tales of the four's escapades and Virgil listening to music, somehow hearing and correcting every time Remus tries to make Virgil look stupid. Occasionally they'll vent about a teacher that took away Remus' figdet toy because it was "distracting" or forced Virgil to present in front of the class. On those days Janus will make them their favorite foods and put on the special jazz record he only ever uses when it's been a tiring day or one of the kids had a nightmare. Janus doesn't hesitate when Virgil is having a bad anxiety day or Remus can't get gory explicit images out of his head to call them out of school with a forged doctor's note.
Patton works at an elementary school so Roman and Logan walk there after school and do homework in his classroom until school lets out. After Patton is able to leave Roman starts telling them an equally embellished story of the day with Logan's occasional correction when it starts getting too outlandish. On bad days where the students were rowdy and Roman got his notebook taken away for writing in class and Logan got picked on for taking slang literally they'll go home and bake whatever they have the ingredients for.
As the friendship goes on they start spending more and more time with eachother outside of school, Remus and Virgil taking the time that Janus is still at work to join Roman and Logan at the elementary school or the Hart kids visiting the Lis house to chill and listen to music. Janus and Patton never officially meet until it's 3 am and they're in the police station because the twins convinced the other two to jump a fence and Remus' sleeve got caught in the barbed wire and their combined yelling alerted someone walking their dog.
They get to talking more after that and notice some similarities in the twins when they were younger. While Remus used to talk about his "brother at the foster home" Roman would mumble in his sleep about "how unfair it is the knight has to save the dragon." Janus does some digging and finds out the truth. They discuss how best to tell them before eventually deciding on a conversation over a laid-back dinner.
It doesn't stay a laid-back dinner, as soon as they sit down Virgil immediately realizes something is up, which means Logan and Remus realize, which means Roman also knows. Logan asks what's wrong and Virgil just points to Janus: "the snake is gonna tell us something." Janus looks impressed and him and Patton tell them what they found out. Roman and Remus freak out and are split between being pissed they didn't realize before or ecstatic at finally reuniting.

Virgil and Rennes are so Gomez & morticia coded !!!!!
Just like, when he kisses up her hand? It's such a them thing ( Virgil to Remus )
On how he adores her? Remus to Virgil, or flip flopped!
- Vee 💜
Y E S!!! FUCKING F I N A L L Y SOMEONE WHO AGREES!!! They are absolutely Gomez and Morticia coded!!! Ree would shower the hell out of Vee with kisses and the hand kiss all the way up to his neck is only the cherry on top (You bet your ass Ree's mustache tickles Vee when he does it and hearing the music of the Emo's laughter only makes the chaotic Duke's heart melt even more) Ree loves Vee so damn much and will express it in the most unhinged way possible and the best part is that Vee loves his chaotic nature... He doesn't judge him because they both can be unapologetically themselves around one another... They can laugh, they can cry, they can be vulnerable, they can feel so much emotions with each other and the other person would just listen and be by their side supporting them through it all and that's what makes it so beautiful <3

You're Not Alone
Epilogue: Friends and Family
Masterpost | First | Previous | Ao3
We have reached the end! I hope you all enjoyed, especially @edupunkn00b who this story was written for 🥰 Please check out their writing, it's some of the best stories I've ever read 💙💛💚
Summary: Logan, Janus and Remus are celebrating their first Christmas as a married couple but a snow storm strands both Janus and Remus elsewhere, leaving Logan home alone. Knowing that the situation will trigger their husband, Janus and Remus need to find a way home.
Content Warnings: Reference to abusive parent/childhood
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Logan slept better that night than he had in a while. Despite his protest, he ended up sandwiched between his husbands. In his opinion, Remus should have slept in the middle since he had been the one absent for a week, but he and Janus insisted that Logan needed to be “caged in comfort”, whatever that was supposed to mean.
He woke up the next morning alone in bed with Janus. Remus side was already cold, and he could hear movement downstairs. It wasn’t an unusual occurrence; Remus was the one of them who had the easiest time getting up in the mornings. Still, Logan couldn’t go back to sleep now and detached himself from his remaining husband who mumbled in his sleep but let him go.
Logan quietly left the room and chanced a look out of the nearest window. It had stopped snowing at some point, but it was still piled up high out there. The sun was starting to shine through the neighborhood though, so hopefully some of it would melt away soon. With no street in sight, he couldn’t tell if they had been cleared yet, so instead of continuing to stare out of the window, Logan went downstairs to find his wandering husband.
He found Remus in the entryway, pulling on his coat.
“Where are you going?” he asked, shocked to hear how whiny he sounded. Remus liked to tease him about being needy in the mornings and he could again see the spark of amusement form in his husband’s eyes.
“Aww, don’t worry, my dear star, I’ll be back before you know it!” Remus giggled, pulling Logan into a hug that he halfheartedly resisted. “But I promised to collect Roman from the airport so that he doesn’t have to rent a car, it would be crazy expensive apparently.”
“Did they clear the streets?”
“Yeah, came through about 40 minutes ago! I think the snow must’ve stopped around the time we went to bed.”
Logan hummed and abandoned his pride in favor of burying himself deeper in Remus’ arms.
“You must’ve really missed me, huh?” Remus chuckled fondly.
“’Course I did.”
“I love morning-you,” Remus sighed. “Well, I love every part of you of course but morning-you is the most adorable one.”
Logan whined at the teasing; Remus’ warmth made him drowsy again which led to him being not as embarrassed by his needier side as usual. His husband recognized the signs immediately however, and reluctantly pulled away, since he really needed to leave or Roman would kill him.
“Sorry, starlight, but I really need to head out.”
“I know,” Logan murmured, shaking himself awake again. “I’ll make sure to have something to eat for both you and Roman when you get back.”
“Thanks, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it just as much as I do.” And with a quick kiss to Logan’s forehead, Remus was out of the door. Logan watched through a window as his car pulled out of their driveway and down the street that was indeed (mostly) cleared of snow. With a hum, he made his way to the kitchen to get the coffee machine started.
~~~
Janus joined Logan on the couch half an hour later and they both settled down to read a book and drink some coffee while waiting for the twins to get back. It was just the kind of calm morning Logan loved, even if he had preferred Remus being there as well.
When the twins did get back, Roman’s first words to Logan were, “You have married two madmen.”
Logan just responded, “I am aware.”
Afterwards all four of them had a small breakfast together since they needed to head off to brunch with their friends soon.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t have opened the door,” Roman commented while they waited for Remus to put his luggage away before they left. “If someone came pounding on my door in the middle of a snowstorm, I wouldn’t let them in, no matter who they sounded like! That’s some boogeyman behavior. I don’t want to get cursed, thank you.”
“I’m shocked, Roman,” Janus smirked, “I thought a Disney fanatic like you would know better considering kicking out the needy during a storm is how the Beast got cursed.”
Roman was quiet after that and for a moment Logan worried that his husband had send their brother-in-law into an existential crisis but as soon as Remus joined them and announced that he was ready to leave, Roman returned to his usual self and started bickering with his twin.
~~~
The drive to the café was filled with chatter of the twins about their trip. Their retellings were confusing at best since they both contradicted each other on almost everything form the flight being pleasant to the highlight of their excursions in Germany. It was entertaining for Logan and Janus to listen to at the least and soon they arrived at their destination.
“Shouldn’t your car be parked here?” Logan asked Janus with furrowed brows as Remus drove past the café to reach the nearest parking lot. “You said you left in on the street by the entrance.”
“I did, but I also left the keys with Remy so he could drive it away if it was in the way. I had no idea if I was anywhere near the curb.” And indeed, they found Janus’ car in the lot, safe and sound. Unlike the street, the sidewalk hadn’t been completely cleared yet, so the walk back to the café’s entrance was a bit precarious but thankfully none of them slipped.
As soon as they stepped into the shop, ignoring the sign that proclaimed the business as closed, all eyes fell on them. It seemed they were the last to arrive, which wasn’t surprising, considering that Remy and Emile lived in the building and Patton and Virgil were both quite punctual – Patton because it’s just polite and Virgil because of his anxiety.
“Great, the insane people have arrived,” Remy teased, earning himself an elbow in the side from Emile.
“Be nice, Rem,” he chided and turned towards them with a warm smile. “So glad you could make it!”
Just as he finished speaking, Patton barreled into Janus, babbling about how he worried he had been and that he should have never let him leave in the first place. While Janus was busy calming down his cousin, Virgil walked over to greet them, bumping shoulders with Roman, hugging Logan and lightly punching Remus in the arm for making him worry.
“Well then!” Remy called over to them, clapping once to get their attention. “Since all of us are here now and I’m starving, let’s get to munching and spilling the tea!”
Everyone agreed and moved to grab a plate and ravish the buffet. Logan hesitated for a moment, watching his friends – no – his family gather together and chat with laughter ringing through the room quickly and couldn’t help but wonder what his ten-year-old self would have said if he knew this was the life he was heading towards. Would it have been easier to deal with the torment of his mother? Would he have even been able to believe it? Even to him now, married to the two most wonderful people he ever met, it seemed so surreal. Like a dream.
But it wasn’t a dream. He knew it wasn’t.
This was reality.
His reality.
These were his friends, his brother-in-law, his husbands. His.
And he couldn’t think of anything that would be more perfect than this.
A Seat at the Table
Pairings: Roman x Patton x Virgil x Logan + Janus x Remus x Logan
Trigger warnings: mention of drug, parental abuse and homophobia.
What happens when a ghost visits Roman’s new household?
Roman's little perfect Catholic family was torn apart when his twin, Remus, went missing all those years ago.
It took him the disappearance of his brother and best friend to realise how abusive their parents were. He wouldn't believe it until then.
His only way of coping was staying away from the house as much as he could, building a new home with his other friends: Virgil, Virgil's brother Patton and Patton's best friend Logan.
The boys literally started building a house for the four of them. It was only a cabin at first, a refuge for them to seek in the storm. But growing up, it gave them the idea to live together in an actual house they would build. So they did just that, Logan even becoming an architect and Virgil a home designer for that. Well, they were passionate about their subjects too.
Roman was a pretty handyman guy who would handle most of the hard work to build the floors, walls and ceilings, though he still asked for help thanks to their four revenues combined. He worked so hard, on weekends, on holidays, in the evenings, just to get it done.
Patton wasn't helping that much, since he was the most clumsy and was actually disabled - Logan formally forbade him from trying too anyway, so when his three friends were building the house, he would make them food and remind them to hydrate themselves or have a break. He was the health manager of some sort.
The house took three years to build, after two years of designing it and another one of budgeting. It had been a long, long project but once it was done they were just so proud of it. Their first Christmas there would be special, they knew it.
And special it was. The four of them were sitting at the table. Patton had asked them to put another plate at the table, in front of an empty chair, as part of a Catholic tradition of hospitality. No one thought much of it and they just put the plate down while they were still preparing the big meal.
They were about to sit down, Patton was still in the kitchen, Virgil and Logan were already sitting at the table and Roman was turning their back to them, contemplating the Christmas tree with gifts at the bottom. He sighed happily, the most happy he could be, though sadness dwelled in his voice when he talked:
"I wish it would have been this way."
They all knew about Remus, about his sudden disappearance when they were fifteen, and how it affected Roman. Fifteen years later, he was still thinking about it, every day. He felt like something was missing and even asked Logan and Virgil to put a room for him, next to Roman's. He never told them, but ever since they moved in from their tiny messy apartment, he would visit the empty bedroom at night. He never forgot.
"It's exactly the reason why we built this, Romy, Logan said softly. To have it this way."
The architect was genuinely concerned about Roman's enticement to his lost brother, and even argued with him about the pertinence of having Remus's room in their house. Those arguments always ended in tears and Patton helped to settle it by suggesting it could be a guest's room too.
On the other hand, it made Virgil anxious. He would never tell Roman, but he firmly believed Remus was dead. He always had been so reckless and used to put himself in so, so many dangerous situations.
He stood up and walked over to Roman, stroking his shoulder with his thumb, gentle as always. It was a touchy subject that had to be handled with softness. And Roman broke down under the touch, crying silently.
Patton came out of the kitchen upon hearing the sobs getting louder. Virgil was already cuddling Roman, so he added himself without saying anything. After some moments of introspection, Logan joined them in his own awkward way - he wasn't used to hugs and didn't like touching people or being touched.
When Roman's tears died out, Patton brought the food and they all sat down on their circular table, with one chair empty. It didn't feel weird, except for Virgil, whose beliefs about Remus and faith in ghosts made him eye the place anxiously.
That was why he got so badly startled when someone knocked at the door. Everyone stopped, but he jumped. He put a hand on his chest, breathing heavily, while Patton stood up to open the door, hiding his concern behind a smile.
When he opened the door, he couldn't help but froze. Blue eyes were gazing down at him, the same as Roman's, from the same height as him. In fact, the man who was looking at him so shyly looked exactly like Roman, except for the weight: he was way thinner because of lack of nutrition.
"Hey. People told me I could find Roman here, he said hesitantly, forgetting to introduce himself."
But it wasn't needed. Patton knew it from the moment he saw him.
"I don't wanna crash your Christmas celebrations but I wanted to give him a present."
He looked behind him to see another, smaller person with long blonde hair. Patton couldn't say if they were a man or a woman.
"Just give the gift to him, Re, they won't want us in, they said with annoyance."
That was all Patton needed to come back to reality from his utter shock. He answered before Remus could say anything:
"No, no, no, you're welcome here! Actually, we were expecting you..."
The person behind Remus stared at him with shock, but still looked suspicious. Patton made way for the both of them to enter and guided them to the table.
Logan was up, surely about to come to the door to help Patton as he didn't come back soon enough, but he almost sat back down when he saw the two strangers. Virgil went pale as if he had seen a ghost, and Roman cried immediately.
He got up too and bearhugged his brother whom he had recognised on the spot. He didn't let him go for long minutes, both of them crying, until the other stranger complained:
"Their meal is gonna get cold. Just give your present already."
But there was now a strange fondness in his tone, something soft that made Remus giggled.
"Forgive him. He just doesn't feel at ease because he thinks you'll hate him. He's Janus by the way."
Janus stared at him with hatred, hiding total endearment behind his murderous gaze. His arms were crossed on his chest and he was still standing far from them.
"Well, Logan said, walking to Remus to shake his hand then Janus, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that you are, in fact, welcome at our table. Isn't it what Patton meant when he asked for an additional plate?"
Once again, Janus stared in disbelief. He didn't answer, because he wanted to say no, but he was in Remus's brother's house so it was, in the end, his decision. He looked over to him helplessly.
"Ah! We didn't have a full meal for so long so really, who am I to say no? I would be some stupid jackass. Oh wait- I am!"
He laughed to himself and Janus smiled. Roman smiled too, but they were the only ones as the others were a bit confused.
"I'm glad you didn't change, Roman admitted to him, finally letting him go."
His eyes were red and he was still shaking, but now only happiness was overflowing his mind.
"Just put the present under the tree, we'll open them tomorrow.
-Oh, I wanted to-
-He's trying to tell you that you're gonna sleep here, Virgil cutted Remus off.
-What."
It took a lot to shock Remus, but apparently selfless kindness was something entirely new to both him and Janus. They didn't dare to sit though, even when a sixth chair was brought in by Logan and Patton put a plate in front of it.
The four friends sat back down and looked expectantly at the two newly arrived not-so-strangers. They finally sat with them, though Janus was tense as ever, meanwhile Remus relaxed quite easily. They started eating soon enough, hungry as they were, and no one dared to stop them except Roman.
"You have to tell me: where did you go? What did you do? Fifteen years!"
He looked like a child, in front of his twin brother. A child who received the best present of his life, even with Remus's gift that added to the pile under the tree. Remus slowed his eating and started narrating his life:
"The parents found out I was gay, so they kicked me out, he said flatly, like it was nothing. I'm glad they don't know I'm genderqueer, those fuckers have no rights over my life now.
-But they told me you escaped, Roman interjected, hurt.
-Well, they lied. Probably thought you'll end up gay too if you knew. What a shame to have a dead gay son! Remus snorted.
-Too bad for them then, Roman laughed."
They exchanged a look of complicity.
"They can't escape their fate of shitty parents. Do you still have contacts? Remus asked, genuinely curious."
His brother shook his head.
"Huh-uh. Not since my coming out. In fact I didn't really come out, they just saw me kissing them."
He pointed at the three other men. Remus laughed, loving his brother more than ever now that they reunited. It was a very warm feeling, knowing they weren't so different even after fifteen years without seeing each other.
"When they kicked me out, I roamed the city with nothing but my clothes. That's where I met Janus, in the street. He was kicked out from his house too, because he was smoking too much and crossdressing.
-Oh, you're a crossdresser? Logan asked Janus, who didn't say a word yet and was still eating."
The person stopped, looking up at them. He swallowed the food he had in his mouth, sat straight and cleaned his lips with a napkin.
"I call it crossdressing, but it's just how I dress everyday. I just love extra clothes when I can wear them, no matter how I look, how people call me, or what gender I experience. It's always a performance.
-You can see why I ended up genderqueer, Remus grinned."
He caressed his boyfriend's cheek as the other started to blush.
"Stop it, he quietly asked with a lisp."
But Remus didn't. Virgil grunted.
"We get it, you're in love, now go on with your story.
-Vee, that's rude! Roman said. Let them be romantic.
-Oh don't worry, I just love messing with him, Remus cackled, but he continued.
"So I was in the streets. Janus was in the streets. We were both in the streets and we weren't getting shit because people were mean. We moved to a slightly bigger city nearby, you know, the one with cinemas.
"We tried to get a job but failed, since we didn't have any address nor proper clothes. We were starving so we stole some food for months and started sleeping at someone's empty apartment. It was a messy one, in renovation. I think it was a landlord trying to rent it.
-But eventually he found out... Janus sighed.
-Yeah. We spent some time in jail, which was neat because we had beds! It was around that time we started smoking. You heard it here folks, jail forces you into drugs."
He laughed to himself, which seemed to be a habit.
"When we got out, Janus got a job at a local bar to dance and lipsync and charm the drunk fuckers. I hated them.
-Don't be too jealous, Ree, I showed you what it's like, Janus purred, relaxing in his chair.
-Gross, Virgil commented and Patton agreed."
Remus and Janus laughed as they finished their plates. Logan, who was the closest to them, half-filled them again.
"Thank you dear, Janus thanked with a bow.
-It got us enough money to settle in an old cabin in our hometown's wood, Remus pursued with his mouth full, spitting chunks of meat to Janus's disgust. We got a nice mirror and a mattress. Even a guitar, so I could play in public begging for money!
-Maybe it was our old cabin, Patton said with nostalgia.
-Yeah, maybe it was, maybe not, but it gave me the idea to reach out to you, after all those years...
Remus sighed dramatically.
"He took him a few more years to work up the courage to meet you and to find you also, Janus said while staring at Roman. When he saw how your life had changed for the better, he didn't want to come anymore. So I convinced him to at least come and give you a Christmas present."
Roman gulped and smirked.
"Thank you, then, Janus, for bringing my brother back to me.
-I didn't bring shit, I'm taking him back. He's mine."
Roman didn't object, he mostly found their relationship cute and he was glad his brother had someone. Though he was indeed thrown off by Janus's personality. He even looked a bit... secretive and scary.
"So... you're still with your friends, Roro... Remus teased with a wiggle of his brows.
-Yeah, though they're a little bit more now, his brother laughed.
-Damn. You got yourself three boyfriends while I was away. Always knew you were a Don Juan, Remus joked."
The dinner ended on a much more positive note, so they all gathered in the living room.
Roman, Patton and Virgil sat on the same couch while Logan ended up next to Remus and Janus. They were all getting tipsy because of all the wine they drank, and especially Janus and Logan, as the latter only relaxed during those nights when everything was permitted. It was an unspoken rule for him. So Janus and Logan were talking in their own drunken manner, entertaining the others with their theories on famous philosophers and scientists.
"I'm telling you, Newton was gay as hell, Janus blurted out.
-I am not against the theory, at all, Logan acquiesced, a bit more focused. But hear me out: homosexual behaviours were onoy categorised as gay much later, so can we still call him gay? Shouldn't we use the words from his era? It is a bit presumptuous to put our modern labels on historical figures...
-You're so clever I want to make you shut up, Janus whispered as he was staring at him intensely."
Logan blushed and looked around to his boyfriends and even Remus, for clues. He was confused.
"What do you mean "so clever"? You are clever too, you shouldn't downplay your own intelligence..."
Remus laughed, because he understood what Janus was doing, and Logan did not.
"Someone stop me, Janus asked, looking at the three men on the other couch, or I'm gonna steal him."
But they only smiled, amused, and even laughed when finally, he launched himself forward, kissing Logan's lips. Logan, surprised but not confused anymore, fell backwards on Remus, who looked happy to hold them both.
"You come here, eat at my table and steal my boyfriend, Roman commented with a smirk. I've never been so happy to see you again.
-I was informed I will steal a bedroom too, his twin brother shouted a little louder than needed.
-You won't go out of here, yeah, Patton nodded. Be careful, Logan doesn't like surprises."
He giggled, seeing the aforementioned dishevelled in Janus and Remus's grasps. Logan adjusted his glasses on his noses when Janus pulled out from the kiss, grinning at him with an expression of self-satisfaction.
"It's alright, Patton, Logan whispered."
He was still a bit shocked but came back to his senses, sitting upright and trying to flatten his blue shirt.
"See? It's totally fine... Janus repeated, leaning on Logan."
Everyone was entertained by the games of Janus and Remus with poor Logan, who took it all in, flustered as ever. He was still reasoning and thinking clearly, able to give his consent, and was actually delighted by the two others' touch. That was the only reason his boyfriends never intervened, not jealous at all, as Logan was still looking at them with endearment for the whole evening.
Eventually, they were all very tired - and quite excited to open their presents in the morning - and went to bed. For the first time in a long time, Remus and Janus fell asleep feeling like they belonged. They were loved, cared for and had people to open to - other people to love. For the longest time, it was just the two of them, now they had a family - and another boyfriend, maybe.
I ALMOST FORGOT IT WAS DUKECEIT WEEK I AM FERAL! So! I've queued days 1-3 to post throughout today to make up for the lost time.
@dukeceit-week-2024
Here's day 1: sunflower/ocean! In which a selkie and a farmer care for each other greatly. There won't be a fic every single day but this one called to me. Janus is a harbor seal! The spots were chosen to mimic his scales hehe :)
[1,096 words]
▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫▫
A boy lies barefoot on the jagged cliff rocks on the beach near his father’s home, listening to the choppy water slap itself onto them and spray him with the scent of salt. This water would drown a man instantly if he tried to swim it, carry him far below the waves to his watery grave. It’s very dangerous a spot. To a man, at least. He is waiting, watching, to see if his visitor will come to him today. As he gazes, far in the distance, he notices a small grey speck against the green of the water, observing him as well.
He sits up with a massive grin splitting his lips, his fingers clutching onto the gift he brought. No matter how much he trusts his visitor, his family has driven into him deeply the knowledge that you must always offer a gift to the fae to stay in their good graces. The grey, speckled coat of his visitor dives back beneath the waves, gone for a moment before surfacing right at the rockface. The seal barks at him, and the boy laughs with delight, waving vigorously. “Hi, hi! You came to see me again!”
The face of the seal splits in an invisible seam, and falls to the sides like a hood to reveal the speckled face of a man. “Hello, farmer boy,” he chirps at him, treading water the rest of the way to the rock before pulling himself up. His reddish hair is soaked through with brine, and he smells of pure ocean, of places that man will never go.
“Janus!” the boy proclaims as he scoots towards him, hesitantly reaching out to touch his shoulder, avoiding his coat entirely. “It’s gotten so cold lately, I thought for certain your kind went out with the seals to warm water, don’t they?” He brushes wind blown hair out of his own face with frustration, to which Janus reaches up and holds his hair back for him with a coy grin.
“I don’t share secrets of migration, Remus. One slip of your tongue and you’d have my kind hunted for sport even in our safest spots.”
Remus pouts at him visibly. “I wouldn’t do that! Don’t be silly!”
Janus laughs, showing off his mouth of very inhuman teeth, made to eat fish and oysters rather than the soft cooked vegetables and meats that Remus’s family consumes. “You’re a human, and they are very bad at slipping up. Both on rocks and with their words. That’s why my kind avoid you, or at least one cause.” Janus’s gaze is caught by something in Remus’s opposite hand, and his dark eyes fixate on the bright colour instantly with barely restrained interest. “What gift did you bring me?”
Remus’s smile widens even more, his eyes raking over Janus’s curious face with fondness. “It’s a flower! You remember the coral you brought me, the bright yellow stuff? This is almost the same colour, isn’t it?”
“It is…” Janus says, greedy hands reaching for it, only for Remus to swipe it away playfully. He jumps up and dances backwards across the rock towards the shore.
“Nope, not getting it that easy, seal boy!~” he shouts teasingly.
 Janus lets out an indignant huffing sound and stands, not chasing him outright but obviously following him across the rock and sand. “Farmer, just give me my gift! What is this?”
“We’re playing! Er, I know it’s not exactly how seals play but-“ Remus cuts himself off as Janus's eyes darken and glimmer, a grin breaking his lips apart.
“Oh, playing, huh?” He gets into a hunched pose as if he’s going to charge at Remus. “Get over here and I’ll drown your ass, ‘playing,’ c’mere!” And then he does charge him. Remus shrieks out a delighted laugh and begins running through the shallow water right at the sand, Janus’s sloshing footsteps right behind him. As they get closer and closer, Remus suddenly turns around on him and begins running towards him instead.
Janus yelps, but doesn’t have time to course correct in any way, so Remus catches him and swoops him up into the air in his arms, whooping victoriously and swinging him in a circle as Janus barks at him in surprise. “You idiot, put me down!” he laughs. “I’ll curse your entire bloodline for this, slaoiste!” Janus swears at him, jokingly beating at his back until Remus settles down and just holds him there in place, the two laughing together with locked eyes as the freezing ocean pelts their legs.
Remus sets his companion down again after a moment, clearing his throat awkwardly. “You can have it now, here,” he says, brushing back Janus’s hair and resting the flower on the top of his inhuman ear steadily. “There we go, beautiful.”
Janus smiles at him, a quite genuine one for once, reaching up to touch the petals and finding them to be incredibly delicate. He gazes over Remus sadly, huffing. “I do have to go for winter, to somewhere warmer. I won’t be able to come see you until at least spring.”
“You could stay here, with me! On land? That offer obviously will always stand, you know, right?” Remus tries to mask his sudden engulfing sadness with a hopeful smile, but Janus’s face only falls further.
“I can’t, Remus,” he says, subconsciously clutching on tightly to his coat. He knows Remus wouldn’t steal it by now, but every time Remus asks him to stay, the stories his people tell of the inescapable love spell fill his mind with fear. “I’m not a land creature. I don’t belong here, with you. At least not all of the time.” Janus looks at the ground to avoid the crushed face Remus makes at him. “I’m sorry.”
Remus shakes his head. “No, don’t be, please. I get it, you know?” No one wants me enough to stay forever, no matter what I do, he finishes the thought in his mind. He takes in a deep breath to steady himself. “You promise you’ll be back, in spring?”
“Yes, farmer boy.”
Remus holds up his pinky. Janus tilts his head with confusion, looking him up and down. Remus chuckles. “It’s a pinky promise! We shake pinkies, and that makes it an extra solid promise.”
Janus laughs, but he reaches up and shakes their little fingers together soundly. “Okay, Remus. How silly. It’s a pinky promise.” He releases him, and turns to face the sea, clutching at the hood of his coat. He steps further into the water, breathing in the salt and brine of his home. He can see other seals in the far distance, no doubt someone curious coming to find him. “Well… I have to go.” He looks back to his human, shooting him a sad smile. “I’ll see you again. Pinky promise.”
“Pinky promise,” Remus whispers, waving his selkie off with a forlorn smile and eyes as wet as the sea.
Virgil : The light sides asked how I deal with Janus and Remus so easily. The secret is, I don't. I have no control over them whatsoever. Earlier, Janus called my name and when I showed up to see what was going on, Remus shot me in the throat with a nerf gun.
Note
after I rewatched the holiday asides, please consider with me, if you like:
prinxiety is a recent thing and unbelievably sappy, dukeceit is a long term married couple. the twins are still brothers and the in laws are SALTY towards each other. Logan is a collective mutual friend.
Virgil, Janus, and Remus are all crushing HARD and trying (with varying degrees of success/skill) to seduce Logan into their respective relationships. Virgil wants to extend the sap to Logan and stare into his eyes as they make love. Remus and Janus want to eat that nerd alive (or have him eat them 👀).
(Roman's just along for the ride lol)
some of the phrasing on this makes it sound like this is a fucking. gay hallmark christmas porn plot as opposed to canonvers, which to me is even funnier because it begs the question of why patton and logan are even there. did logan get two separate invites to this family event for the express purpose of seducing him and blowing his back out in their cousin pattons guest room.
also i am LIVING for virgil being such a dweeb that he's like "how can i seduce logan so we can make sweet passionate love under the moonlight? i know! i will cosplay james moriarty and send him on a scavenger hunt. scavenger hunts are sexy right?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Janus looked at the sight in front of them, a solemn expression on their face. In front of them laid a man, multiple bullet holes in his body. Around them, people walked off, their voices clashing together. Janus didn’t really worry about the other people that much though. Silently, they took a handle out of the pocket of its pants, the handle extending itself out and turning into a scythe. Janus raised the scythe above their head, about to strike the man’s body before they were interrupted.
“Whatcha doing, JanJan,” a voice asked. Janus backed up a little, startled by the sudden unexpected noise. They looked back to find Remus, a spirit they had reaped a few months earlier. The sight of Remus wasn’t really a great sight to see. Their whole body was covered in scratches. One of their legs was covered in blood with only a few pieces of skin visible, and the other leg was practically all gore. The one side of their head was covered in blood and a part of their brain was visible. Their one eye socket was missing an eye, blood dripped out of it instead. It was not pretty. Remus floated behind Janus, seemingly sitting on thin air.
“Jesus fucking Christ, Remus! What the hell?! Don’t do that!” Janus yelled, startled.
“Jesus! Sorry!” Remus said. Remus looked off behind Janus, seeing the guy behind Janus.
“Woah, what happened to him? He has to have like 20 bullet holes in him,” Remus said, looking at the guy.
“Execution via firing squad. Apparently, this guy abused his wife and kids and then snapped at a party they were having for his eldest daughter’s birthday. Ended up murdering everyone at that party except for his eldest daughter, and a few of the cousins before being arrested,” Janus said.
“Damn, what an asshole,” Remus said.
“Yes, I agree. Now, go away and let me do my job,” Janus said, swiping his scythe at the guy’s body. The guy’s spirit rose from his body, the guy stumbling back a little before regaining his balance. He looked at Janus, falling to his knees and clasping his hands.
“My lord, Jesus! It is an honor to be in your presence! Though, you do look a little different from how I thought you would look like…” The guy said. Remus started to laugh, Janus glaring at them.
“You really think, they’re Jesus?! This dork, with their stupid suspenders and nerdy glasses!” Remus laughed.
“Remus, shut the fuck up,” Janus said, glaring at Remus.
“I’m sorry, but who are you?” the guy asked, looking over at Remus.
“I’m his boyfriend~” Remus said, making kissing gestures towards Janus.
“The fuck you aren’t?! We’re not even friends?! Besides, both you and me don’t even identify as male?!” Janus said, annoyed.
“Ew! Gay people are disgusting! You two are sinners! I-” the guy started.
“Alright, enough of this. I’m not going to listen to the rants of a disgusting murderous homophobe. Go to hell,” Janus said, swiping the guy with his scythe. The guy immediately burst into flames, screaming in pain as he disappeared. Janus adjusted its hat before turning towards Remus.
“Now, why the hell would you tell him that?!” Janus asked.
“Because, annoying you is funny?” Remus said. Janus sighed, retracting their scythe and putting it back into its pocket. The two looked at the guy’s body.
“This is pretty messed up,” Remus said, floating over to the guy and kicking his arm with their foot.
“Eh, your death was probably worse, considering all the screaming and crying and shit,” Janus replied, pulling a screen up and swiping through a list. It crossed the guy’s name off their list.
“Besides, after doing this for 5 years now, you kind of get desensitized to everything,” Janus continued.
“Oh yeah, I forgot you became a reaper after you died at 18,” Remus said, “Damn, that’s crazy to think about.”
“Died at 19, but yeah, I guess it is pretty crazy,” Janus said, looking at the screen and swiping through the list of names.
“So, where to next?” Remus asked.
“Well, I need to visit the graveyard, apparently a few spirits are having trouble ascending. I also have one more spirit I need to reap before I can break for the day,” Janus replied.
“Then, let’s head over to the graveyard,” Remus suggested.
“You mean, let me head over to the graveyard, and you just follow me to annoy me?” Janus replied.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Last one to the graveyard is a loser!” Remus said, fading out of view.
“Oh, you little-” Janus started before also fading out of view.
Janus reappeared in the graveyard, Remus floating in front of it.
“Lmao, loser. I win,” Remus said, Janus glaring at them.
“Fuck off, you cheated,” Janus said, adjusting its suspender straps. The two heard talking off in the distance.
“That must be them. You stay here, don’t get in my way. Just let me do my job, so we can get out of here,” Janus said.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Remus replied, rolling their eye. Janus walked off, out of Remus’s sight. Remus leaned back, crossing their legs and looking up at the sky. The sun shined brightly, but it didn’t affect Remus’s eye. Clouds moved throughout the sky. Remus looked around at the clouds, seeing what shapes they could find. They smiled sadly to themself, thinking about their twin sibling, Roman. Nothing could describe how much they missed him. He was basically their other half, and they never really felt full without her. Remus looked over to the side, seeing a person wearing a green vest walking towards them. They jumped a little, the person walking right through them and sitting next to a nearby grave. The person put the flowers they had been holding down in front of the grave, sighing.
“Oh, Remus… I’m so sorry…” the person said. Remus floated down, standing on the ground and walking towards the person.
“Roman…” Remus said under their breath. They walked closer to Roman, reaching their hand out before they heard Janus yell.
“Remus! What do you think you’re doing?! You know the rules! You don’t touch the living!” Janus yelled.
“Oh, so what?! I can’t comfort my sibling when she’s in distress?!” Remus replied back, annoyed.
“Literally, the whole point of that rule is so that the dead doesn’t interfere with the living! There would be drastic consequences if you did!” Janus said, walking over towards Remus.
“And what if the people who told you that are wrong or lying?” Remus asked.
“And what if they’re not?” Janus replied, glaring at Remus with their arms crossed.
“Whatever. You said so yourself, you’re not my friend, so why should I listen to you?” Remus responded, rolling their eye.
“Because I’ve been doing this longer than you! I know things,” Janus said. Remus rolled their eye, starting to float again.
“Now, come on. Let’s go get this last assignment over with, so I can go back to my apartment and chill,” Janus said, fading out of view. Remus looked down to their sibling, tears falling down their cheek. Remus plucked a leaf from the tree nearby, letting it fall down in front of Roman. Roman picked the leaf up, looking around while holding the leaf. Remus smiled softly, looking at their sibling while fading out of sight. They reappeared behind Janus, Janus talking to the spirit in front of them.
“So, what happens now?” the spirit asked.
“Well, it looks like you have some unfinished business, so you’ll need to finish that before you’re able to ascend. I would recommend starting with the smaller tasks first, and working your way up,” Janus said, handing the spirit a slip. Remus floated over to the two, hovering behind Janus.
“Alright, thanks,” the spirit said.
“No problem. If you ever need me, you can just call my name on that slip, and I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Janus replied.
“So, who’s this?” Remus asked.
“Oh, I’m Patton, and you are?” Patton responded.
“Remus, nice to meet you!” Remus said.
“You too!” Patton replied, smiling.
“Alright, we better go. Have a nice night,” Janus said, waving and fading out of view. Remus followed suit.
The two reappeared in the living room of Janus’s apartment. Janus put its scythe on the table near the door, walking to its room.
“I’m getting changed. You find something to do,” Janus said, closing the bedroom door behind them. Remus floated over to the couch, sitting down and turning on the TV. They watched the TV as Janus changed into more comfortable clothes. Janus walked out of the bedroom, sitting down on the couch next to Remus. Remus looked away from Janus, watching the TV.
“Hey, I…” Janus started.
“What?” Remus responded, cutting Janus off.
“I’m sorry about yelling at you in the graveyard, it’s just…” Janus started again before trailing off.
“Yes?” Remus asked, looking at Janus angrily.
“Look, you know the rules. You know why we can’t interact-” Janus said.
“AND WHAT IF THEY’RE LYING?!” Remus cut Janus off, Janus looking towards Remus, “ALL I WANTED WAS TO COMFORT MY SIBLING SO HE DOESN’T END UP LIKE ME! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! OUR FATHER ALREADY LOST ONE SIBLING, I DON’T WANT HIM TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE EMOTIONAL DISTRESS OF LOSING ANOTHER AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS OF LOSING THE FIRST!” Remus’s eye teared up. They put their hands on their head, curling up. Janus frowned.
“Remus…” Janus said, reaching over to Remus.
“Why did I have to be so stupid… I died and I couldn’t even say goodbye to them… I had to watch as my twin sobbed in the back of that stupid ambulance and begged me to stay, and I could do nothing to comfort her! I had to watch as his whole world was shattered to pieces, and all I could do was lay down on that stupid cot and bleed to death,” Remus sobbed, rocking back and forth. Janus frowned, moving closer to Remus. They put an arm around Remus as Remus sobbed.
“Hey. It’s going to be okay! You’ll see them again eventually!” Janus said, trying to cheer Remus up.
“You’re not helping,” Remus said, pushing Janus away.
“I-” Janus started.
“Don’t start. I’m just going to go to the graveyard for the night. I don’t want to be around you right now,” Remus said, fading out of view. Janus sighed, putting a hand to its face. They pulled the screen back up, scrolling through the list of names again and crossing Patton’s name off the list of names that needed to be reaped. It pulled up another list, writing Patton’s name down. They looked at Remus’s name, tapping on their name to pull up a little profile.
“Remus Sanders-Kingstone, Aged: 23, Death date: June 4, 2023, Reaper on duty: Janus, Ascension status: not ascended” the profile read. Janus sighed, scribbling a note down on the notes section of the profile before swiping it away. They put the screen away, turning the TV off and laying down on the couch. They closed their eyes, drifting off to sleep.
Remus reappeared in the graveyard, angrily kicking at a tree.
“Stupid Janus! Stupid rules! I wish I had never died in the first place!” Remus said angrily beating against the tree until they had let their emotions wear out. They looked over towards their grave to find their sibling, who still sat at their grave. Another man walked up to Roman, sitting down next to him.
“I figured I would find you here…” Thomas said, looking towards Roman. Roman looked over to the man, looking back down at the ground.
“Hey, Pa…” Roman said.
“Roman, you’ve been out here for an hour now… Why don’t you come back home? It’s almost dark out…” Thomas said, putting a hand on Roman’s shoulder.
“What’s the point of going back home, if they’re not going to be there?” Roman said, still looking down at the ground.
“Roman…” Thomas replied. Tears started to fill Roman’s eyes. Thomas pulled Roman into a hug, Roman sobbing into the man’s shoulder. Thomas rocked the two back and forth, holding Roman in his arms.
“I miss them so much, Pa! It’s so difficult without them here!” Roman sobbed.
“I know, buddy… I know… It’s okay… I’m here…” Thomas said, holding Roman close. Remus stepped closer to the two, a sad expression on their face. Thomas stood up, holding a hand out to Roman.
“Come on, buddy. Let’s go home,” Thomas said. Roman took Thomas’s hand, holding it as the two walked away. Remus floated above their grave, watching as the two walked out of their view. Remus looked down at the flowers Roman had placed at their grave. Green roses, Remus’s favorite. They picked up one of the flowers, holding it close as they floated in the air. They leaned back, closing their eyes and falling asleep with the rose in their hands.
