Wished for on a Falling Star

Roman tapped lightly on Patton's door before poking his head in. "Hey, big guy. Think you're ready to talk about what happened at school today?"

Patton sniffled and nodded. "Yeah."

Roman crossed the room with Virgil in tow. They sat, leaning on the wall, on either side of the boy.

"Okay-"

"How come I had to be adopted?" Patton asked before Roman could prompt him.

Roman and Virgil exchanged wide eyed glances over Patton's head. Roman nodded at him then quickly shook his head, Virgil scowled in response and shook his head raising his shoulders slightly. Roman nodded at him again and Virgil huffed our a sigh.

"There's not an easy answer to that, bud," he answered softly. "Sometimes...parents just need help if they want a kid. And you're daddy and I needed help so we adopted you."

Patton lifted his chin from his knees and glanced up at Virgil with glassy brown eyes. "But how come I had to be adopted?" He asked again. "Other kids don't have to be adopted and they have parents. So what happened to the parents that didn't have to adopt me? How come they made me be adopted? Other parents just have their kids and they keep them so they don't have to be adopted."

"There's not an easy answer to that either, starshine," Roman answered gently and rested a hand on Patton's back. "There are lots of reasons why parents who have kids put them up for adoption. Sometimes, it's because they don't think they cam take care of the kids the way they deserve, sometimes...sad things happen and parents die and the kid needs someone to take care of them, or-"

"Is it cause they don't want them?"

The quiet question shocked both Roman and Virgil to silence.

"Treavor says that's why I had to be adopted. Cause my real mommy didn't like me so she sold me so I could be adopted."

Virgil clenched his jaw. "Yeah, well, Treavor's a little-"

"What your dad is trying to say," Roman cut in giving Virgil a pointed look. "Is that, yes, sometimes parents don't want the kids they have. But that doesn't mean that nobody wants them, and we didn't buy you. We wished for you on a falling star."

"Really?" Patton asked, his voice full of wonder.

Roman nodded solemnly. "Mhm. We knew we couldn't have kids all by ourselves so on New Year's Eve, right as the clock struck midnight and the new year started there was a falling star and we wished on that star that we could have a little boy. And that wish came true when we adopted you."

"Did I come out of the spaceship like Janus?" Patton asked excitedly, shattering the moment for Roman.

"I'm sorry, what?" Virgil questioned.

"Janus said that Uncle Remus and Uncle Lo wished for him on a falling star and then the star crashed into the backyard and it was really a spaceship and Janus climbed out of it like Lilo and Stitch!"

"No, thankfully, you're a pretty normal kid," Roman muttered half under his breath.

Virgil scowled at him and smacked at him from behind Patton's back.

"Wait. Does that mean Janus is an alien like Stitch is?"

Virgil pointed a warning finger at Roman. "No, Janus isn't an alien."

"Then how come Uncle Remus says he climbed out from a spaceship?"

"Because your Uncle Remus is chronically concussed," Roman grumbled.

"What does that mean?" Patton asked, scrunching up his nose.

"It means he hit his head really hard," Virgil explained.

"Ohhhh. Is that how come he has a cut on his eyebrow all the time."

Virgil messaged his forehead. "Yup. Alright, let's- let's back track a minute, okay? Your daddy and I love you a lot, okay? If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they're bullies and they're lying. Got it?"

Patton nodded sharply. "Got it."

"Good." Virgil ruffled the boy's hair and planted a kiss on his forehead. "I love you, P."

Patton did his best to hug both his parents at once. "Love you, Dad. Love you, Daddy."

Roman chuckled and pulled his family close. "Love you too, P."
