probably time for this story i guess but when i was a kid there was a summer that my brother was really into making smoothies and milkshakes. part of this was that we didn't have AC and couldn't afford to run fans all day so it was kind of important to get good at making Cool Down Concoctions.
we also had a patch of mint, and he had two impressionable little sisters who had the attitude of "fuck it, might as well."
at one point, for fun, this 16 year old boy with a dream in his eye and scientific fervor in heart just wanted to see how far one could push the idea of "vanilla mint smoothie". how much vanilla extract and how much mint can go into a blender before it truly is inedible.
the answer is 3 cups of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup milk alternative, and about 50 sprigs (not leaves, whole spring) of mint. add ice and the courage of a child. idk, it was summer and we were bored.
the word i would use to describe the feeling of drinking it would maybe be "violent" or perhaps, like. "triangular." my nose felt pristine. inhaling following the first sip was like trying to sculpt a new face. i was ensconced in a mesh of horror. it was something beyond taste. for years after, i assumed those commercials that said "this is how it feels to chew five gum" were referencing the exact experience of this singular viscous smoothie.
what's worse is that we knew our mother would hate that we wasted so much vanilla extract. so we had to make it worth it. we had to actually finish the drink. it wasn't "wasting" it if we actually drank it, right? we huddled around outside in the blistering sun, gagging and passing around a single green potion, shivering with disgust. each sip was transcendent, but in a sort of non-euclidean way. i think this is where i lost my binary gender. it eroded certain parts of me in an acidic gut ecology collapse.
here's the thing about love and trust: the next day my brother made a different shake, and i drank it without complaint. it's been like 15 years. he's now a genuinely skilled cook. sometimes one of the three of us will fuck up in the kitchen or find something horrible or make a terrible smoothie mistake and then we pass it to each other, single potion bottle, and we say try it it's delicious. it always smells disgusting. and then, cerimonious, we drink it together. because that's what family does.
|| part 1 || part 2 || part 3 || part 4 coming soon... ||
man sabo really thought he'd get away from ace that easy, huh? well tough shit buddy you just got the attention of one of the most stubborn men on the seas. i do wonder how this'll play out now that sabo's cornered... hehe >;3

hades 2 spoilers below the cut. rambling about a post-final boss piece of dialogue
this is such an interesting line and it makes mel's character SO good to me
like. her entire life was marked by the tragedy that took place when she was too young to remember, and from the moment it happened it was expected that she would be fully dedicated to making it right, because that was her family that was taken. that was the mother and father and brother that, if they'd had the chance to raise her, she would love more than the world itself. she should want them back more than anything.
but, the thing is? she has other love. she has hecate and the other people in the crossroads. she can't miss the love that she didn't have from her family because it never happened - and yet, her entire life from the moment chronos took them, she was expected to be so angry and stricken with grief over it that she would be willing to dedicate her entire life to killing him.
because that's what she should be doing with all of that anger and loss - it should fuel her to kill chronos. that's her goal. that's what she has been training for her entire life.
mel is a good person - she does want her family back. she meets her father for the first time and it's a deeply emotional moment for her. it's important to note that she doesn't actually mean what she says here. but she's been expected to be motivated by loving them so much that ever expressing that she doesn't actually love them as much as she's supposed to has never been an option. nemesis tells her that she isn't fully motivated by loving them in order to hurt her - and it hurts her because it's true (at least to a degree that she finds unacceptable within herself).
and when she gets that crucial step closer to achieving her goal - death to chronos, and here he is, about to die - he asks her to hypothetically pick between not achieving that goal, and potentially doing harm to the family that she is meant to love than anything...
and the motivation to kill him, the thing that has been drilled into her over and over, the first line that you hear her speak when you start the game - that is what wins.
Your love was as passionate as the golden light shining through the open windows as you and your lover both lovingly look at each other in the morning. It was like this every single day. No amount of anger, fights, and pettiness could dissolve such wondrous moment from both of your life. You loved him, and he did too. He alone believed that it was an unbreakable fact.
He also remembered how much you loved every other little things in the world. The way your eyes would shine brightly at the sight of a cat. Your cat, to be exact. You always said that its grey fur reminded you of him, even the cat's stoic-like personality was similar to him as well. It was funny, really. He never liked it when people speak nonsense, just like what you did then, but oh boy, did he fell deeper in love with you after you said that. It was truly funny. Love had always been such a foreign concept, yet he tried to learn it as best as he could. He wanted to love you as much as you do to him. But with you now gone, who will be the one to teach him?
He can't let another have a go through his heart. You were already enough. It was only you who could fill that empty abyss of a heart. Knowing that there was no way of bringing you back, he fell into a lonely road of remembrance. He missed you all too well. He missed you every time his consciousness returned after being woken up from his slumber. He missed you. Your warm embrace was now left with him only trying to gain warmth from the sun's light.
From the start of the morning till the end of the moon shining, he missed you. It was just you, you, and you in his mind.
You just loved too much, and it hurts him. The blues, the greens, the greys, and even him. He, who you said was one of the most insufferable men that you've known, was loved by such a charming person. He was loved by none other than you. So, with you now gone, he couldn't quite imagine how hard the pain would inflict itself on him. Ironically enough, it went beyond the imagined.
Maybe that was why he stayed coop up inside his house after the announcement of your death. Maybe that was why all the mirrors inside his house was thrown away into the storage room. Maybe that was why he couldn't look at himself normally anymore. He, himself, reminded him of you. The way you would always compliment his cat-like eyes, his grey hair, and his cold yet warm approach made him stayed in that particular past—not wanting to move into a future where you did not exist. He did not want to exist.
All he wanted now was to be by your side, yet that was impossible. After all, he promised you. He promised to live well, even if you were gone now.
"I tried to live as best as I could, love, but it's hard. With you gone, I feel like the whole world has stopped working too. It was all too sudden, and I was forced to try and accept it. But, I just can't. Now, I'm sitting here on our old couch, looking through the window as the light of the sun hits me once again. Yet, there's something missing. After looking around, i found the problem. It's you, my dear. You are not in my arms, and it pains me to realise that. I cannot live without you, but you made me promise that exact reality. I have to go on living in this pathetic world with you not in it. Ah... I miss you, love, and I miss your love."
Welcome to the completely serious Japanese Fakir can’t remember Duck’s name theory!!!!!!! 🎉🥳🎈🍾
Sponsored by me, a person who has watched this show an ungodly number of times!
The first time Fakir calls Duck by her name is in episode 5. Mytho tries to tell Fakir Duck's name (he'd been calling her "that girl") and Fakir interrupts him. Rude!
[ID: two screencaps showing dialogue. Mytho says "She'd called Duck. Her name is Duck and--" and Fakir responds "I don't care about any of that. End ID]
A little later in the episode Fakir calls Duck by name! Yay!!
[ID: screencap of Fakir saying "Your name's Duck? Just what do you know?" End ID]
...and then he never uses her name again. UNTIL EPISODE 17!! He calls her Tutu when she's Tutu, "that girl," or just "her." Case in point: episode 15.
[ID: Screencap of Fakir saying "Did you tell her about this?" End ID]
He and Rue are talking about Mytho. Duck has not been mentioned once in this conversation and Fakir chooses to bring her up without referring to her by name; just "her" again. Thankfully Rue knows who he's talking about.
The first time Fakir uses Duck's actual name past episode 5 is in episode 17 and then he's just echoing Uzura.
[ID: Two screencaps. In the first Uzura says "when they say at school that Duck 'goes well together'" and in the second Fakir says "Duck is? With who?" End ID]
By episode 18 Fakir seems to have remembered Duck's name. He calls out for her, for the first time not just echoing a name someone else told him (there's another example of this earlier in the episode.)
[ID: screencap of Fakir yelling "Duck! Are you there?" End ID]
From here on out he consistently refers to her by name. Though he has a bit of a relapse in episode 23:
[ID: screencap of Fakir thinking "Is he out there somewhere, laughing as he watches Mytho and her suffer?" End ID]
Once again he brings up Duck as "her" without having referred to her by name previously in the scene.
In conclusion:
[ID: a screencap of Fakir hunched over and blushing with the text "I forgor" at the bottom. End ID]
Another CoM translation weirdness on top of the random heavy emphasis on "her" is that in english memory!Riku directly calls back to his KH1 parting words to Sora even though in japanese he doesn't (he talks about protection)
It's. Definitely a choice to introduce a callback where there isn't supposed to be one :) you don't think there's any merit in keeping "aitsu"'s ambiguity in place ok, but you could at least try not to go full "there Must be Only One interpretation"............
i think what hits most about nobara's backstory is everything that's left unsaid and peaks from between the lines. it's the fact you can easily infer that something was wrong without ever having clear answers on what exactly was wrong. but if you can relate to the feeling of wanting to escape a place and the alienation from everyone around you, especially when you're brought up in small communities, then you can certainly understand, if not fully then partially, nobara herself and the struggles she might have had to face all by herself for a very long time; maybe even the importance fumi and saori had in her life and the pain from having to part from them; and, perhaps the selectiveness in letting people in that she later on develops as well.
Christians really have their heads up their own asses. The pompous self-importance in this statement alone is unbelievable. Christianity doesn't own the monopoly on morality and ethics although Christians certainly deluded themselves into thinking they do.
I guess I cannot shut up about the homunculus, huh? I call this one:
The Head(ache) Skeleton Key
Get it cause I'm gonna get a headache if I overthink this
So, I'm thinking about that old concept art ishiwatari made that had a.b.a's beta design, which, wasn't really that different, aside from her top having an x mark, her holding a sorta small ax and chewing on either a key shaped lollipop or a key (later concept art which I assume is after her design started to simmer shows the first option, but as we don't know if those are related, we can only speculate) but the big difference was... Paracelsus! He was a carbon copy of A.B.A's head key (no, before you ask, they didn't give her finalized key a skeleton design to homage betacelsus, both para and her key were supposed to be the same!) albeit with more detail.
Maybe this lore wasn't planned yet but... Yknow how in Strive interviews we learn Paracelsus taking on a key form was related to him trying to hold A.B.A's attention?
What if beta paracelsus straight up shapeshifted exactly into her head key as a stronger way to gain her trust? Let's be real, being born with that skeleton key, I theorize it's one of A.B.A's most consistent things about her enviroment. Whatever shit happens she has a skeleton shaped key in her noggin, always. (Though it seems to have changed a bit in strive, of course! But you could argue before all that the key was kept in place.. classic a.b.a's head key is rusty, I wonder if her creator just didn't care about her getting tetanus or it just actually deteriorated by not being well-kept :( )
That'd make paracelsus' shapeshifting more insidious... But of course we don't even know if betacelsus was even alive or just an idk demonic looking cool (inanimate?) Weapon. It's what I ASSUME to be very early concept art, not in the final product and, hell, if I understood well the strive interviews, the implication was that para's shapeshifting into a key isn't complete, so the "yeah by xx era he has perfectly shapeshifted into her skeleton key but upscaled" wouldn't work.
You thought the post was over? Nope! You get a buy one get 1 extra rambling free offer!
Part of me ponders if the skeleton key thing is a reference to.. actual skeleton keys! I'll paste their wikipedia definition so you know why that name:
A skeleton key (also known as a passkey[1]) is a type of master key in which the serrated edge has been removed in such a way that it can open numerous locks,[2] most commonly the warded lock. The term derives from the fact that the key has been reduced to its essential parts.[2]
As far as I've been able to find, japanese says a word translated as master key for master keys, but I haven't been able to find if the skeleton type is a thing in japanese or if it even shares the naming. However, I don't understand japanese (it was by translator) so please take my pondering about the existance of skeleton keys in said language with a mountain of salt.
But, even if that wasn't a term in japanese, whose to say the team didn't pull inspiration from an english term? Thought not the same situation, afaik, they've already chosen a bunch of terms from different languages for some gg topics. Maybe they didn't but it would be a fun coincidence!
A big part of me thinks maybe this isn't this deep and they just went with a beautiful (esp betacelsus with all the spine details) skeleton design cause.. Well, they are creepy which fits A.B.A's vibe pretty well, lol
they're "seiros lapdogs" because they're fighting back against the people who attacked them completely unprovoked??? also because it so happens that thales is at garreg mach so they have to go there to reclaim the area to defeat him???
i just hate this because it's just perpetuating things about faerghus and its people that just aren't true. it frames it like they jumped into the war willingly for the church and that they're only here for the church. like nah buddy, it's not faerghus' fault you're out here fighting to protect thales and ludwig.
it also is batshit to me how he and leopold are fighting to stop faerghus from advancing but like... they know what's happening to the empire and that edelgard isn't even calling the shots anymore, yet they still stupidly fight for the very person who is literally razing their country and burning their villages. they know the empire is in shambles and that the kingdom isn't targeting them and is specifically aiming for gm to get it back from who? thales; who, mind, at this point is in his real form and not posing as arundel anymore. everything is laid out plainly, but they still act like faerghus is the bad guy.
but yeah, okay. faerghus BaD for defending themselves, fighting back, finding out who is behind all the puppeteering and heading to take him out. sure, that makes them seiros lapdogs. like what are you, an agarthan mouthpiece??? may as well be like yeah you go retreat and leave you agarthan lapdog. if they don't realize it's Someone Else in charge of course, then ludwig lapdog works fine too.
and it sucks because other than this shit, i like waldemar just fine as a character. it's just like, it feels like they forced someone to have to stick in that final faerghus BaD insult before the grand finale so they just randomly picked someone to remind us that faerghus is Always Wrong as long as they continue to fight back and prevent being attacked in the future.
waldemar here is just basically ag caspar. fighting and risking his life for thales, who is destroying the empire and basically holding the emperor hostage. if the writing here had any decent plot points, they would've all stopped and have been like hey wait, shouldn't we be fighting to get our emperor back? why are we stopping these guys from killing the people who are destroying this country?
and like, they literally went from siding with ludwig during the insurrection to siding with edelgard in this timeline to... jumping immediately back to ludwig as soon as he was at the top of the food chain (thales notwithstanding). as soon as the person in charge changes, they jump ship immediately; then of course get mad that the people they attacked are coming after them... and fighting them as they defend the very people who are letting adrestia become a literal, physical ruin.
it really just tells me that these people don't care about adrestia itself, but status, power and wealth. they don't care about the country itself as long as they're doing well. that's like, the only thing i can get from still fighting with/for ludwig/thales. the fact that they just fight for ludwig again as soon as edelgard is out of commission is also pretty gross to me. they have no loyalty at all.
and it's like, i want to like waldermar and leopold, but they come across as just selfish, entitled and only there for their own asses to be covered. and i get that - that is a realistic take on politicians, but the fact that the game regularly loops back around to faerghus BaD despite that and despite portraying these people as opportunistically selfish is like... what are they even trying to write??
