Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 1): General Bracket Match 32

Ceret/Terec | Identity: non-binary | Media: The High Republic comic (2020)

Ceret and Terec were a pair of Kotabi bond-twins Jedi, meaning they shared a consciousness across two bodies. Promotional material has clarified that their use of “they/them” is about their gender not plurality. They’ve also been described as “trans non-binary”, a useful clarification here. Because they presumably were assigned a binary gender at birth, so despite their different neurology, I haven’t labeled them as alien non-binary. They’re very closed off, increasing the uncanniness of their nature.

They’ve unfortunately kind of been a punching bag in the comic series they appear in, with one or both of them suffering something terrible in basically every issue. However, this typically provides the protagonists important information about whatever they’re facing. They’re in most issues of the 2020 run of the main High Republic comic series, taking the same missions as the protagonist Keeve Trennis. When she went undercover with the Nihil, she was joined by Terec, so that they could give updates to the Jedi through their twin. However, in that mission they were nearly killed by the Leveler, forcing both twins into hibernation. Thankfully, they awakened from their hibernation during the destruction of Starlight Beacon, thanks to Avar Kriss’ battle meditation. After participating in the group Force feat to keep the top half of the station together just a little bit longer, they escaped in an escape pod with Keeve.

Rae Sloane | Identity: bisexual | Media: Aftermath Trilogy

Rae Sloane was created for the first New EU novel A New Dawn, where she is a sympathetic antagonist. Dutiful and loyal to the Empire, she serves it because when she was younger she was attacked by criminals and saved by stormtroopers. She opposed ruling through fear and enslavement, because such tactics were ultimately ineffective for maintaining order. As a cadet, she foiled an assassination attempt against Vader and the Emperor, making her a special favorite of Vader. She was assigned to leader the secret operation to complete the genocide of Alderaan by killing off planet survivors. Her internal thought process there remains unknown. She also got lost and missed the Battle of Hoth, but Vader didn’t kill her for it like everyone expected.

She appeared in a handful of short stories and the Kanan comic series, but her character really came into its own in the Aftermath trilogy. After the Battle of Endor, she formed one of the more powerful Imperial remnants. This attracted the attention of Gallius Rax, the man who Palpatine had groomed to arrange the establishment of the First Order. Under his guidance, her remnant grew in power and she assumed the rank of Grand Admiral. It was from her remnant that phase two of Operation Cinder was launched, the elimination of all imperial remnants that weren’t aligned with the Contingency plan. She attended the New Republic Liberation Day celebrated, signaling the beginning of a diplomatic end to the war. However, Rax had arranged the mass assassination of New Republic leadership using inhibitor chips implanted on former imperial prisoners. These tactics disgusted Sloane, turning her against Rax. Rax assumed control of her remnant and she was forced to team up with the rebel Norra Wexley to take him down.

Nora and Sloane tracked Rax to Jakku, where the cultish devotion of the Imperials Rax had deemed worthy and the brutality required for Imperials to survive after the war had turned disturbed her. The two women tracked Rax to the Observatory, a secret site where Rax was going to complete a Dark Side ritual which would cause Jakku to explode- killing most of the New Republic military and Imperials deemed unworthy. They stopped the ritual, and Sloane killed Rax. As Rax died, he told her that the rest of the Contingency plan was for her to take a replica of the Imperialis and lead the remains of the Imperial Remnant into the Unknown Regions. Sloane did so, hoping she could lead the Empire away from the crazy plans of people like Palpatine and eventually return to the galaxy to save it from itself. She did so, founding the First Order. Then ??????. It’s assumed Snoke killed her at some point, but honestly everything is up in the air. Her absence in the new Shadow Council in the Mandalorian, is conspicuous. She is possibly already dead by this point, or she has sent Brendol in her place as a deliberate snub, unaware he seems to be part of the coup that will eventually befall her.  She has been confirmed as being bisexual, and certainly had sexual tension with her aide Adea Rite. The only textual element of her orientation in the trilogy is that she specifically muses that she never had a chance to have a “wife or husband”. She’s also kind of a nerd. When trying to find out more about Rax or Kanan, she went to a massive imperial intelligence library. She was considered the only officer of her rank sufficiently knowledgeable enough about shuttle technology to conduct an inspection. She also successfully figured out that the Millenium Falcon survived fleeing through the asteroid field in Empire Strikes Back.

I also grabbed a few more variations of-” “Karabast, Kal, where did you even get these?” It takes so much effort to keep his voice down. “I stole them. There’s an imperial medical facility not far from here.” Ezra’s eyes damn near pop out of his skull, “And they just have these?” "That and so much more. I didn't want to be presumptuous, but just in case it is something you want, I stole these as well," and Kallus pulls out a small box of hormone gel packets. "I can acquire more, if you want me to. And this is an open standing offer. At any point in the future, if you need anything and no one else is able to get it for you, comm me and I'll get on it immediately." Ezra is at a complete loss as he tries to process this development. After a few minutes, he finally smiles through his shock and chuckles. "Remember how I said you couldn't move in?" Kallus raises an eyebrow. “Yes. Why?” Ezra shakes his head as he looks from the medical supplies to Kallus. "I take it back, you can take Zeb’s bunk. He can move in with Kanan-" Ezra just starts laughing and Kallus rolls his eyes, grinning nonetheless.

Star Wars Animated Pride Headcanons

This is for the characters in the animated TV shows (minus The Bad Batch because I haven't seen it yet. 🤭)

I can't do all the characters in the shows simply because that would be... a LOT, but I'll do the main ones and any I find particularly fun!

As with my last post, these are just my opinions and it’s totally cool if you have different ideas. Art is subjective and there are plenty of ways to engage with said art. This is just for my personal fun!

Without further ado:

Ahsoka Tano (she/her): Bisexual

Might be canon? It's implied she liked Lux Bonteri, and also she kind of had a love-interest in the Ahsoka novel in Kaeden Larte. Either way, because I'm a dumb Bisexual, my favs are getting the bi treatment.

Rex (he/him): Aromantic

Rex loves his friends, but never felt any romantic attraction for anybody. Which is fine. There are plenty of ways to love! And he's got a lot of love to give!

Quinlan Vos (he/they): Pansexual, Non-Binary

A Funky Dude. He's just vibing. That includes matters of gender and sexuality. They don't care. Really they could use any pronouns and not be affected. He just like who he like regardless of gender or species. Probably a Monsterfucker.

Asajj Ventress (she/her): Pansexual

Gender doesn't matter. Only power. She's just unlucky to have fallen for Quinlan (or lucky depending on how you look at it).

Barriss Offee (she/her): Lesbian

I feel like she struggled with her feelings of liking someone, considering the Jedi Code is against attachments. The fact that she fell in love with Ahsoka didn't help matters. She really didn't have anybody to turn to. She had a crush on her best friend, and the order that raised her wouldn't affirm attachments. The order failed her. In many different ways.

Plo Koon (he/him): Ally

Plo Koon supports his Queer Jedi family!! Don't come for them. He will take you out.

Shaak Ti (she/her): Lesbian

Your fav Clone Mom is a Lesbian. I believe even though she was attracted to women and femmes, she didn't act on it, adhering closely to the code, even at a young age.

Depa Billaba (she/her): Ally

Same thing as Plo Koon. Loves her gay and trans Jedi. Is not afraid to cause bodily harm to those disrespectful of her family.

Aayla Secura (she/her): Bisexual

Ah yes, the Twi'lek everyone ships with Commander Bly and Kit Fisto. Girl is bisexual and wouldn't have issues acting on it, regardless of Jedi code. She learned well from her master, it seems.

Ezra Bridger (he/him): Bisexual

My dumb Bisexual brain go brrr. You can't tell me that man didn't have a crush on both Wren siblings. And let's not forget about Jai Kell. They were fruity. (I know they've never met, but I strongly ship Luke and Ezra because I just think it'd work so well). Once again, one of my favs and therefore Bisexual.

Kanan Jarrus (he/him): ally.

He loves his gay son(s) and daughter. He will fight for them. He will fight for you. Get you a man like Kanan Jarrus.

Hera Syndulla (she/her): Pansexual

Hera's got bad taste in species, tbh. She saw a drunkard on a mining moon and went "oh?? 💖"

I'm mostly kidding. Space mom loves who she loves regardless of gender. It just so happens that the species she attracts are dumb human males.

Sabine Wren (she/her): Sapphic

Can't decide whether she should be Lesbian or Bisexual with a huge preference for femmes. She gives off Lesbian energy tho. Her and Ketsu Onyo are fruity.

Garazeb Orrelios (he/him): Gay

That's not a scary Lasat. That's a homosexual. Can you stop making heart eyes at Kallus for one second? Ugh.

Alexsandr Kallus (he/him): Gay

Man gets shown affection ONE TIME and suddenly he's throwing away his fascist beliefs for a man. Can't decide whether that's good for him, or just desperate...

Hondo Ohnaka (he/him): Aromantic Homosexual.

Romance?? Hard pass. Hook-ups?? Absolutely.

Not really that important to this post, but when I was playing The Sims 4: Journey to Batuu™️, I really, really wanted an option to flirt with Hondo, but the goddamn game wouldn't let me do it. Guess it would hurt their brand to let me flirt with the really old space pirate. Just let me romance the dirty old space pirate in your dumb life simulation game!!!

Kazuda Xiono (he/him): Bisexual

My brain took a running leap and elbow-dropped onto my gut earlier today with transgender man Kanan Jarrus. Caleb Dume on puberty blockers during the Clone Wars (one of the reasons he’s so tall now), either having them on him when he had to flee or trying to find under the table clinics on Kaller. Complicated feelings about his hair growing out on the run because the only style he knows for long hair was Depa’s. Janus Kasmir tells him to just slick it back in a nerftail and he never changes that style ever again.

Gunslinger Kanan getting his hands on T all over the galaxy, and sometimes that just means paying a doctor, and sometimes it means dealing with other smugglers, and at least once the damn dealer lies about the kind of near-human species its for and Hera’s ready to rip the sleemo to shreds when Kanan gets sick. The rebellion provides his first reliable access to gender affirming medical care since the Jedi Order fell, and wow does he have some complicated feelings about that.

I think this’d dovetail nicely into a verse with genderfluid, transfem Ezra Bridger; more inter-generational trans friendships and mentorships, please.

THE PAST

kanan jarrus, born caleb dume, was a jedi knight who survived order 66 during the clone wars. living on thanks to the sacrifice of his master, depa billaba, on kaller, he met the smuggler janus kasmir, who taught him how to survive as a fugitive. going into hiding, he abandoned the jedi ways for some time, swapping his blue-bladed lightsaber for a blaster. after working with the rebel operative hera syndulla during the gorse conflict, jarrus decided to join their rebel cell.

as syndulla's second-in-command, the two came to develop a romantic relationship. after the force-sensitive teenager ezra bridger joined the spectres, jarrus became his jedi mentor despite still perceiving himself a padawan. after defeating the grand inquisitor in combat, jarrus and his fellow rebels learned they were part of a larger rebellion and joined phoenix cell. during a mission to malachor, jarrus was blinded by the former sith lord maul. after months of retreat, jarrus restored his connection to the force and repaired his frayed relationship with bridger with the help of a mysterious being called bendu, who taught him to see things through the force.

kanan and his fellow rebels continued to fight various adversaries including imperial grand admiral thrawn and maul, who sought to corrupt bridger and destroy obi-wan kenobi, the key to destroying the sith. regaining his confidence, jarrus also taught sabine how to wield the darksaber and helped her to rally the mandalorians over to the rebel cause. as the rebel alliance escalated its struggle with the empire, kanan and his fellow rebels returned to free lothal, a world which they had a special connection with.

jarrus eventually met his death on lothal around the year of the battle of yavin, during the rescue of hera syndulla after governor arihnda pryce ordered her walker to fire on the fuel pod they were on, sacrificing himself to allow his fellow rebels to escape.

THE PRESENT

it was a fiery explosion, a painful death, and yet it was not the end. near the beginning of 7aby, kanan woke up once more on the planet of lothal, a half-day’s trek from the nearest city. he quickly learned that the galaxy had been liberated from the empire and there was a growing new republic, as well as rumors of a reforming jedi order. he quickly sought out to find out what was going on with the jedi and reunite with ghost crew.

PERSONALITY

before hera, kanan was reckless, impatient and belligerents. prickly and detached, he showed his kindness only when he thought no one was looking,and his only aim in life was survival. hera persuaded him to join her to fight for a lost way of life—to work as a rebel leader, for which he resumed his lost qualities of bravery, honor, and perseverance. having felt adrift since the destruction of the jedi way of life, he had developed a cynical and cocky personality,[9] and couldn't stand "protocol nonsense." he was also known for humorous banter. for many years, he lacked confidence about his jedi abilities and was haunted by his master's lost. however, during a lightsaber duel with the sentinel, a manifestation of the grand inquisitor, kanan realized he should feel content with teaching ezra all he could, and to his surprise, he was knighted by the sentinel.

losing his sight had a great impact on the kanan's life and worldview. he withdrew from his responsibilities to meditate in the force. due to his upbringing, kanan distrusted anything associated with the sith and dark side and chastised ezra for toying with a sith holocron. under the tutelage of the bendu, kanan learned to see through the force, overcome his fears of the spider-like krykna, and repair his strained relationship with ezra. by repairing his relationship with his rebel friends, kanan was able to regain his connection to the force.

The Curious Case of Dr. James Barry, or the Strange and Momentous Events that Transpired on a Quiet Evening by the Fire.: book canon Sherlock Holmes, johnlock, trans sherlock coming out. rated teen. I've had what was going to be a part two mostly written for years now, but it's just a few hundred words of sherlock talking about his past growing up trans in victorian britain. if anyone's interested feel free to bother me about it and i might try to edit something coherent out of it.

like watching tea steep: good omens, Crowley and Aziraphale figuring out the body swap the night after the apocalypse. teen and up. also has a cute little bus ride drabble in the series, and potentially pending a sequel if i get through the cringe I feel trying to reread all i have written for it since it's some of my earliest writing

in the sunlit garden: revolutionary girl utena. post canon, utena realising he's a trans man. rated teen.

How to build a friend from scratch: when trying to run away from the academy after blowing up the weapon she built, Sabine gets intercepted by Vader who offers her a job as a mechanic. Stockholm syndrome to found family pipeline. rated teen. I adore this fic, it's my absolute baby, it's fully planned out and the one most likely to get updated next.

Emotion, yet Peace (series): Yoda refuses Obi-Wan's request to train Anakin, so he leaves the order and trains him on Tatooine. they kidnap Ahsoka at some point it's great. rated gen. I have the next few chapters planned and am excited for them, but no idea where the story will go after that.

blue skies ahead: Anakin dyes his hair blue and it saves the world. rated gen. inexplicably my most popular fic. last chapter is half written and waiting for me to get my shit together.

better late than never: Ahsoka wins the duel on Malachor and kidnaps Vader. she trains Luke and Leia, Obi-Wan is there too and so is the entire ghost crew, a lot of emotional discussions and scrambling to build something new because the old cannot be fixed. rated gen. my longest fic, and heading nowhere fast. I have some ideas for the next few chapters but only a vague image of the ending.

That's how stories work: Padme being unhinged and power hungry will save the world. rated teen. last chapter is a mess of disconected paragraphs in my docs for now, but there's a lot to work with there.

I'm you, but taller (for now, at least): Anakin is trans, and so is Obi-Wan. neither of them shares that, and familial drama ensues from the cultural differences between Tatooine and Coruscant, with the shadow of past childhood trauma, and the dark future this type of miscommunication will bring looming over them. rated gen, oneshot

heat and fuel: Ahsoka falls to the dark side to protect Ezra and Kanan from Maul on Malachor. rated teen, very short oneshot
