It’s always funny when anglo writers looking to express a specific idea casually pluck a cool ready-made monosyllabic phrase from their language’s unlimited supply and Romance language translators just curl up in the fœtal position and cry. I'm reading a text in which the American author talks about ‘Haves’ vs ‘Have-Nots’ vs ‘Have-Mosts’ —the poor French translator translated this as ‘ceux-qui-ont’ (the French language: don’t worry I’m just getting warmed up), ‘ceux-qui-n’ont-pas’ (nice we’ve doubled the syllable count but we mustn’t falter), and the beautiful ‘ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres’ (300% expansion ratio let’s gooo! we did it great work everybody.) From 2 to 8 syllables—the minute I saw that bulky thing I knew it had to be Have-Mosts in the original and I was giggling. The anglo author happily proceeds to use the phrase ‘Have-Mosts’ 5 times per paragraph because why not! it’s so quick and wieldy :) we don’t actually need the word wieldy 'cause it’s just the normal state of our language <3 meanwhile you can feel the French translator’s desperation grow as she is reduced to juggling with “those” and “the latter” to avoid summoning her creature. Eventually she reaches the acceptance stage and uses ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres again like, it’s my monster. I shouldn’t reject it

*by gender neutral pronouns i mean anything except for she/he (and their equivalent in other languages) but if there's language subtleties i'm missing do tell me i'm real curious
i also count it if you use gender neutral pronouns that are different to the established ones (english example: zie/hir, xe/xye, e/em or any other set of neopronouns)

The thing about being a lyric mezzo-soprano is that a lot of the available roles are crossdressing male "pants roles" but I am really shit at butching it up so I am constantly portraying just the faggiest of men

If you had to choose to go on a date with Lois lane, poison ivy, Harley Quinn, or catwoman. Who would you choose
Lois Lane tho sadly I don't think she'd enjoy it much considering she has superman at home and how the fuck am I meant to compete with that

with my own various language learning experiences both in and out of school it got me thinking! if youre a non-native english speaker, did you learn any english in school? what version?
i wonder just because when i was in school we had the option of a few languages and one of them was german but specifically we learned high german, not low german. and it got me wondering, if english was offered as a language in your school are you told what version youre learning or do you just figure it out after speaking with native speakers?
reblogs are appreciated! sound off in the tags with anything else you feel like!

decided to make a poll on this because a lot of people i’ve met in the fandom thought that sparks originated in england thinking that ron and russell were london boys instead of los angeles boys. in fact, it is common enough to the point that even sparks has addressed it multiple times and in the sparks brothers even the english celebrities being interviewed thought they were from their own country.
i myself thought that they were british especially since the only pics i saw of them were from 1974. 1974 probably causes people to mistake them for british since they did have a british backing band in the island years. but yeah i wanna know how many people thought they were british or american. took me months to process they were american even hearing their american accents and everything lmao.

In one of my lectures, I overheard a large group of people talking about miraculous, and they were having a debate about whether or not Chat Noir was a furry, so naturally I have to ask.
