9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better:
Tagged by @the-marron, thank you very much lovely! <3
3 Ships You Like: I'll pick some less obvious ones for a change; Chang Dong/Ye Luixi (personally, I thought Parallel World was banger). Chu Sangwoo/Jang Jaeyoung (in case anyone has missed my recent descent into Semantic Error obsession). Kang Yo-Han/Kim Ga-On (guess who just finished a The Devil Judge rewatch).
First Ship Ever: The first ship I remember being into and being aware of as a ship is, oh god can't believe I'm admitting this but, Ryden or Rydon however you want to spell it I AM NOT PROUD OF THIS okay I was young and obsessed
Last Song You Heard: Liars - The Blackout. I'm not bitter it wasn't on the setlist on Monday, nope, not at all.
Favourite Childhood Book: The Jolly Postman Or Other People's Letters always brought me a lot of joy.
Currently Reading: The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods.
Currently watching: Well, I haven't decided what to start next yet?
Currently consuming: some not brilliant homemade choc chip cookies. I had to improvise because I had no eggs but a determination to make cookies to make life seem better after a day at work last night.
Currently craving: endless amounts of money and a chauffeur so I could go to another The Blackout gig tonight instead of sitting at home 😔
Tagging: @miss-ingno @sasamelons @justacoyote @missfangirll @omaenanimonoda @endof-vanity @lacommunarde @baiyubai @bladedweaponsandswishycoats No pressure though! Just if you feel like it :)

Todays rip: 26/03/2024
Chance's Return to Dreamland
Season 1 Featured on: GilvaSunner's Highest Quality Video Game Rips: Volume 3 & Knigra Also on: Kirby Rip Attack
Ripped by digboye
youtube
Requested by fezaki! (Request Form)
You wouldn't BELIEVE how happy I was to see this rip get requested man!! Chance's Return to Dreamland isn't part of the surprisingly many Season 1 rips to have exploded in popularity - think My Dr. Eggman Can't Be This Evil!, Dr. Soulja, Pikmin Park, you get the picture - but its a rip I've had sitting proudly in my playlists for years and a verified banger. And to see that I'm not the only one who knows it exists!!! That warmed my heart for some reason. Fuck yeah.
There's a lot of parallels you can draw between this rip and Door into a Hundred Summers, another one of my Season 1 favorites. Of course there's the obvious one - both are rap mashups utilizing rap music that isn't really commonly featured on the channel, with Chance's Return to Dreamland to date still being the only rip on the channel to use Chance the Rapper's Angels. But beyond that, they have a really similar, enchanting way of grabbing your attention - you click on the rip waiting for the mashup to start, only for the music to dramatically cut away before the song used in the mashup "introduces" it back, at a lower pitch. I'm certain this way of starting a mashup has been used in more than these two rips, yet its a huge part of what's kept them stuck in my mind for so long - it reminds me of Be Cool, Be Wild, and Be My Girl in how, even as early as Season 1 they were finding ways to subvert what you were expecting a SiIvaGunner rip to be by cutting the playback so abruptly rather than having the mashup or melody swap simply start playing more subtly.
But the real reason I associate the two rips with one another so closely, and perhaps the real reason they both employ the aforementioned technique of pausing the track used, is what they do with said track in the mashup - pitching it down to create a quite different experience. This is more exaggerated in Door into a Hundred Summers of course, which takes a tune otherwise radiating the energy of a crisp spring morning and gives it a far more reflective, slow, nostalgic feel. What's done in Chance's Return to Dreamland feels almost like the complete inverse - the tune of Kirby's Return to Dreamland's title screen theme is infectiously jolly, and the slight pitch-down is primarily just done to allow it to play harmoniously alongside Angels, a song already infectiously feel-good in its own right. The two thus compliment each other beautifully, sort of similarly to something like World Out There, where the two sources used in isolation already feel harmonious in emotional intent, yet elevate each other to new heights in the mashup.
It's just a damn good rip, yknow? Chance the Rapper is (perhaps unsurprisingly) not an artist I've listened to much at all, yet his and featured artist Saba's vocals in Angels are just filled with such sincerely feel-good whimsy, such sheer joy and happiness in being alive, a feel that Kirby has ALWAYS been top-tier at pushing - the experience of listening to Chance's Return to Dreamland feels like like frolicking in endlessly warm, sunny grassy fields with those you cherish. A pill of pure happiness of shocking quality and attention to detail for a rip made so early on in Season 1's life. And knowing that digboye is still around today, 8 years later, helping bring rips like the immaculate One-Winged DJ to life, just puts a big dumb smile on my face.

Once a poorly treated and paid idol talent from a different agency, Chispas went off the radar for a couple of years after quitting her old job and came back as the fabulous being you see before your eyes nowadays. Delilah plays the wicked witch known as Lady Quaver in a show called 'X Symphony', who desires to control the artistic medium in a music-centered world for her own evil selfish need while magical girls always twarts her plans in a vilain of the week format. One of the main protagonist is played by Delilah's old friend and former top star of their old agency that had hired her. She had no idea it was her old friend until one faithful meeting where the shining stars finally shared her true feelings she was too shy to express years ago and the two got married. Nemesis on the stage, lovers on the backstage... It would be all happy and jolly if there wasn't a murderous jealous former idol on the loose (Maimai) trying to hunt down her talent, including her wife. So she invested a good fortune on some technology that she could use to protect herself and her talent. ---------------- Another character that came to me upon a dream and i developped the backstory with the help of @voidofhophelia . Her design was such a banger that i decided to color/edit it as soon as i could. I don't have a draft to what her lovely wife looks like yet but i do intend to make a design for her in the future.

Louis Tomlinson knew where to go on his second album Faith In The Future with rockier and smashing indie songs from Britpop inspirations to modern indie classics. His Place Bell’s Laval show was no exception with a stellar performance and the stage scenic effects on point.
First to hit the stage were Snarls from Columbus, Ohio with their fine twist of indie pop. With their fun guitar chords and dancey rock beats, it was such a refreshing and enjoyable time. The female-fronted band were solid on their first performance on Canadian soil with their jolly and emotive lyrics, singalongs and beautiful melodies.
Snarls set up for what was going to be a magical night, all smile on stage with such good vibes. Those who loves Haim, Tegan And Sara, jangly and strong riffs will be served.
We knew Irish indie- rock is catchy right now with the rise of many bands like Inhaler, Fontaines D.C, New Dad and Louis Tomlinson brought in another one, The Academic. Hailing from Mullingar (yeah that’s why the accent sounded familiar, hello Niall Horan!), the crowd was all over it, singing along dancing and jumping around on the upbeat indie pop songs.
Blending elements of pop with magnificently driven chords, the songs are powerful whether they sing rock songs or emotional ballads. Crowd went crazy on Girlfriends, singing a Capella on melancholic soothing drum snarls and bright riffs. Here’s a little snippet of The Academic performance that brought the magic to the French Canadian city. What a blast!
While waiting for Louis Tomlinson and the band to come on stage, pre-show playlist drove us back in time from Nirvana to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Pixies while going in depth into British culture with some Foals, Maximo Park and obviously lots of Arctic Monkeys and never forget Oasis Supersonic banger from Definitely Maybe, a fire throwback to 1994’s Britpop era.
While roadies prepping the set up and Louis Tomlinson’s scribbling Faith In The Future on the big screen, people were so loud even before he hit the stage. Through the huge screams and claps, Louis and his band then hit the first note of The Greatest for a solid intro. Kill my mind followed with such a viral energy and the fans iPhone lighting effects and singalongs. While playing Bigger Than Me on the opening night Uncasville and skipping it the next show, Laval was so happy to get it back on the set list, this is such an anthem and live it’s totally an incredible vibe. Louis Tomlinson energy was all over going from side to side of the stage, interacting with the fans like a proper rock star (and we absolutely adored it!) while teasing and laughing at his amazing musician.
Britpop inspiration floated from every side of the 10,000 cap almost-full arena alongside the live versions of Lucky Again and the slick guitars of Isaac Anderson and Michael Blackwell. Louis Tomlinson’s vocals were solid and very emotional, happiness and smiles flowing all around the people crowd. We were definitely Holding Out To Heartache when the concert finished later on! The Doncaster-born singer never let negativity bring him down and he proved it with Face The Music. Rock and indie was always his thing and he finally step up on his last record to find his genuine sound. He’s thankful for the fans and never forget where he belongs. Dedicating We Made It for his supporters, people sang along loudly to the chorus. Forging his career since 2010 and even from a younger age, Louis Tomlinson is humble, grateful and gave us a very strong and rockier edition of his former band One Direction’s with Night Changes and the crowd was really into it screaming at the chorus.
Emotional and so impossible to describe the feeling, the Yorkshire singer-songwriter got this special bond with his fans. With few words, laughs and drinks, he sang back to back hits from Faith in The Future new album and bonus tracks with soulful songwriting like Chicago, Saved By A Stranger and kicked in with the dance feeling of Foals-esque number Written All Over Your Face, pointing his mic through the crowd with the infamous “SING IT” vibes. Louis Tomlinson knows how to rock in style with his eclectic influences and props to his musicians sparkling some magic with his wonderful new-wave infused mega mix of All This Time and She Is Beauty, We Are World Class. His stage presence and pyrotechnics effects were just incredible and added some spice and energy to the show.
How do you make a perfect setlist? Mix some rockier song with heavy tearful ballads. Following A Copy Of A Copy Of A Copy and the Oasis-inspired first album titled song Walls, Louis Tomlinson surprised the fans with Bebe Rexha’s collab Back To You. Add more guitars, hectic drums and you got a truly better indie version. It was so original and that’s the kind of rendition that could attract brand new audiences. Of course, we can’t skip how his voice truly fits Alex Turner’s shoes on his brilliant cover of 505 by Arctic Monkeys. Indie Louis is a pure gem. The Angels Fly in the room with all the phone flashlights moving in sync and people humming the chorus with Tomlinson. The singer brings hope and joy to the world and the confetti exploded in the room to the jolting guitar riffs of Out Of My System. People jumped around and Louis Tomlinson did his traditional hop in the front pit to interact with fans.
Lights went off and fans shouted and cheered for the encore. Few minutes later, Louis Tomlinson’s offered three last songs, kicking it with Where Do Broken Hearts Go? He gained such confidence slaying on the high notes on some guitar-centred version, inspired by The Who. It was theatrical and emotional just like the beginning of Saturdays and the lights blinking like stars all across the arena. The night closed the Britpop fashion way with Silver Tongues in such a very electric way. Louis Tomlinson presence on stage was so on point all over the show that we would even have take more and more! What a night!

Stupidly long playlist to go with the stupidly long fic. In short, it follows a kind of meandering path from Icelandic youth to swaggering mercenary behaviour on the continent, to service in the Varangian guard in Constantinople. It is very much in an order I chose, and should be listened to in order. I designed it to have them coming closer together and parting ways at various points, and it follows a very rough outline I have for three 'books'' worth of adventures.
Bit more info about each track under the cut, but basically it's Weird FolkTM, Icelandic rock, a smattering of prog, and some entirely self-indulgent pop picks.
Sumer is icumen in - you may know from Wicker Man soundtrack? Everyone's go to creepy folk song because it's one of the oldest. Included because of cuckoo theme. Kólbítur - Icelandic term for 'coal-biter', a character type in medieval stories and folk tales. Usually a lazy boy who rolls around in the hearth ashes as a child getting in the way of the women. After some trauma he is usually revealed to be a great hero, who just needed a bit of goading on. Vísur Vatnsenda-Rósu well known Icelandic ballad, full of longing and intertwined personhood: 'mine was yours and yours was mine'. Nitlayokoya - kind of a spoiler for the fic, but Cassian isn't actually a 'skraeling' (Norse name for the American peoples encountered around Newfoundland), he's from...way further south. This song has the same title as poem by Nezahualcoyotl, meaning 'I am Sad', though this wasn't composed until the fifteenth century. Get Out of My House is based on The Shining, so there's the link to Native American land, and there's shapeshifting in the song too. Seems a good angry bb Cassian song. Filthy Game a stranger and a good man gets drawn into the locals' 'filthy game'. The Devil & the Huntsman mainly for the Sam Lee, but also a rollicking banger from the King Arthur soundtrack. Vibes. The Dark general foreshadowing and vibes. Don't Say No - there's a lot of Patrick Wolf on there, this is early Patrick Wolf urging us to run with our instincts :)) and teeth. Shapeshifter there's also a lot of Richard Dawson in various iterations on here because he does Weird Folk like no one else. Shapeshifter so impressive he's even handing out potatos pre-Colombian exchange. Pagan Poetry best fucked up Björk song everrrr. 'He makes me want to hurt myself'. To Try for the Sun just boys being lads, sharing coats and hanging out on the streets, nothing to see here. Teardrop this is how you do a cover. Theseus 'A black sail billows, the sun hits your blade / And you are hungry, you are hungry for you'. Jolly Bold Robber I love the way Nic Jones sings this. A 'jolly bold robber' attacks a young sailor who's just come ashore with his earnings and they fight - moral is don't fight a desperate sailor who wants to spend his shore leave well. But the way Nic Jones sings 'like lambkins they've stripped' sure is something. And the apology in the sailor's voice for killing his attacker. Feels very Cassian. Two Brothers - any folksong 'and they were brothers' me: 'what if they were ""brothers""?' Here with wrestling matches, bruised egos, pocket-knife stabbings and regret. The Best Excuse in the World I remember seeing this live and David Rotheray explained it as being about a gay man realising he has 'the best excuse in the world' for not loving his wife, but the way Jim Causley sings it erases any of the triteness of that, it's gorgeous. Go Your Way classic 'I love you so much I'm letting you go' folk song. Nonantzin another Nezahualcoyotl poem, this one asking mother to cry for her child when he dies. Crown Shyness is just one of my Brassian songs. Growing up together but not quite being brave enough to reach out to each other. Raincatchers ditto, also shut up I love it.
We used to be the raincatchers And we couldn't see what we were running from You made me feel like Nothing really matters Here in my dreams, we're raincatchers Come back to me like it was before You made me feel like Nothing really matters, nothing really matters If we let this run Caught on a river Everything that we left unspoken Will never be said Revenge of the Bear instrumental, for the title mainly. Who could it refer to, you ask? Animalia whaaaat it's from the soundtrack to my favourite film, also fucked up love and animal imagery. Daring Highwayman getting into the Norwegian/continental mercenary/troublemaking part of their careers now, Cassian definitely makes robery seem cool. Hare Spell he also makes shapeshifting seem cool. Because it is. Stendur æva is about nine minutes long but it's essential I'm afraid. Played on a glockenspiel made from Icelandic rock, I usually LOATHE your man from Sigur Rós and his squeaky voice, but he sort of sounds like a seagull in this, and it features the then head of the Icelandic folk singing club, who has a lovely voice. It's all bullshit medievalism about 'Odin magic' but it sounds fucking amazing. VIBES I SAY. Trøllabundin this is tumblr, you all know about Eivør Pálsdóttir here, right? Ogre more Richard Dawson! But this time the community is not so happy with the outsider figure on its edges. Twa Corbies is a pan-European folk song with pretty old roots. Pov: you are a corvid observing the body of a dead knight. Villon Song high medieval roots for this poem about all the cool things you can do to break the law. Bwganod Richard Dawson AND FRIENDS this time. The title is Welsh for 'scarecrow', which doesn't really have any bearing on things, but the following lines are just relevant, ok Always jokey-woking ‘Til the shit hits the fan Spray my face in fertiliser Grow a mos-toosh Hairy pits Super fit Built like a brick shit Wearing leopard-print Fishnet underpants
I’m on the run, Barely began Gathering sun, but I’ll take my time I’m overrun The damage is done Everyone’s gonna sink into the slime Hellismanna kvæði for the 1990s girl rock!! Also it's an outlaw song. Strákarnir á Borginni means 'the boys on the town' and is a camp tango about the hypocrisy of 1980s homophobic farmers in Iceland. I've posted it here before, it's iconique. Fin Cop a more tragic outlaw song. Nobody loves a troll. Escape oh just for the Vibes, because Plunkett & Macleane has the energy I want my outlaw saga to have. The Night Safari much more recent Patrick Wolf about love not being enough to stop self-destructive tendencies. Also shapeshifters. Excuse me While I shift shape The ocelot Slips the bowline knot But soon falls to prey As a boy I worshipеd the thunder Now it's just a sky under I wait for to fall No why only whеn Still Too Soon to Know yes yes blorbo got on the playlist. Pleasingly few pronouns in this. After all they've been through, surely Brasso would know? Á Sprengisandi is a jolly Icelandic folk song about riding across the highland interior on the main path. There's unclean spirits! Outlaws! Elves! All those fun guys. Ten Thousand Miles just another nice travelling song :)) Oh come ye back My own true love And stay a while with me If I had a friend On this Earth You've been a friend to me Dodona more recent Patrick Wolf going through it. Night Ride Across the Caucasus I'm not sure yet precisely what route they'll be taking by this stage but you've gotta have some Loreena on a medievalish playlist. Anyone But Me what pining would be complete without some jealous misunderstandings? This is such a sinister and sexy song of obsession and it's a fave. Ivy to go with the general move towards the cradle of ancient civilisationTM this is more Richard Dawson (and DIFFERENT friends, these ones Finnish metalheads) this time telling Dionysus's story. Hey Matt if you can take me at my best you can take me at my Darren Hayes-est, gay angstiest: Hey Matt The water carried all my secrets Sifting through the muck I saw my dirty little grievances And the memories I killed All the shameful feelings spilled Lay bare on the asphalt Broken parts I thought I'd drowned real good Oops! I Did it Again it's a Cassian song, ok? Nikitoa last of the songs with a title matching a poem by Nezahualcoyotl, this one about the transience of all things :)) Móðir mín í kví kví what if we made this lullaby into a girl screamo track? Vibes, I say again. Feet of Clay more on the topic of not being able to make a move despite wanting to. Whispering Light the version with Willy Mason. Distance, mark of distance Your burden is your brilliance There's a vessel A hiddеn vessel in the stonе Difference, not indifference Your passion marks you different And you wrestle And how you'll wrestle to come to know The Gates of Istanbul more Loreena! Constantinople, but, well, I don't need to quote They Might Be Giants. Shim El Yasmine It might not be Istanbul but let's get some Arabic language angst about leaving your boyfriend behind in anyway. Last Polar Bear it's about the long overdue proliferation of contemporary queer folk singers actually. Also bears. From the north. Make you think of anyone? The Moon Shone on my Bed Last Night sneaking some more Sam Lee in for the 'muckle ballad' about being with your lad no matter what. Stál og hnífur this is what happens when you leave the pronouns out, Bubbi! Steel and knife is my symbol, the symbol of travelling workers. Yours was mine and mine was yours while I lived among men. Fire Light soothing. Good vibes. Hopefuly. Probably a happy ending, through I'm a long way from knowing how I'll achieve it yet. What is the medieval equivalent of a Death Star? Over Again haha is it all a flat circle? Or once free to be together to they just go out robbing and causing trouble again? :)

i am perpetually on a quest to find the ideal vice. a panacea for all life’s ailments, nay, bullshit. the ones i’ve tried so far are pretty good, but have some serious drawbacks for me:
weed (ideal so far): a good strong indica nullifies about 30% of my nervous system activity, which makes me feel like what i imagine those without generalized anxiety feel like on a normal day. helps me sleep. it does also make me stupider and hungrier (see next point), and good ganj around these parts fetches a lot of coin.
food: another BANGER. goddamn this is a good one. i gain weight pretty easily, which in and of itself i could probably learn to live with, except i am a 6 foot tall giantess who gains all her weight in her upper body. gravity is NOT my friend, and my back and neck are still recovering from the last time i was heavier. also it makes my gallbladder hurt. also doordashing all the time will fuck your wallet in the face.
i haven’t seriously leaned into any of the others. nicotine has no effect on me. i don’t have money to gamble with. the harder drugs are expensive and make you die and i’m not like, that desperate to feel good quite yet lmao.
edit: and alcohol tastes soooo bad fr. and it makes me feel like shit, and it’s expensive. AND it degrades your health. sure it makes me jolly for a bit, but feeling mildly sick, dehydrated and depressed after is not worth it for me.

Week ending: 10th December 1953
We still seem to be feeling Christmassy, or at least quite jolly with this next set of three, none of which are complete unknown quantities. In fact, I can predict already which one I'm going to like most, but we'll see if I'm right.
Dragnet - Ray Anthony and His Orchestra (peaked at No. 7)
Yes, it's Dragnet, again, with a version that looks to have been a lot more popular generally than Ted Heath's version from last week.
That's a shame, because I think I might like this version less? It's still a banger, with particular credit going to the opening riff, but It's less swinging until nearer the end, and I juts don't enjoy it as much? It doesn't feel like as even of a ride, thought it might have been more faithful to the original theme's vibe.
It's still solid, though. We start with the Dragnet riff, and it's somehow a lot more menacing this time, and then we get the timpani from Also Sprach Zarathustra, just to ramp up the drama. It's obnoxiously threatening.
But then we're in for 30 seconds of brass tooting before the jazzy bit comes in. It's fine, impressive even, but I just want the jazzy vibes that Ted's version had.
And then finally we get it, with drums and swung rhythms and double bass, and all is well, until shortly before the end, where we revert to the brass, and then the timpani. Almost like it's re-started. It's fine, but I like the jazzy bit best.
Let's Have a Party - Winifred Atwell (2)
Well, it's another Winifred Atwell Let's Have a _______ track, of which she seems to have made many. Like all the others, it's a medley of popular tunes, played on a deliberately janky piano.
It suffers from being much slower than some of her other offerings, which makes most sonfs worse, though it wins some points back for being in waltz time, which makes most songs better. The speed is more of an issue, though, so it's a net disadvantage for this track.
I did appreciate it starting with a version of Daisy Daisy, which is a track I actually knew. I suspect this was how the original audience felt every time they recognised a song from it, and the appeal was "what's she going to mix in next?" Truly, the mashup of it's day. Unfortunately, it doesn't work well nowadays, when all but perhaps one of the songs going into it have been forgotten.
There's also a random guitar-ish sound, which sounds like a cross between a steel guitar and perhaps a sci-fi theremin/Ray gun noise? It's bloopy, but so sporadic and lightly used that the first time round I assumed it was an issue with the recording. It's an interesting sound, but underused.
I thought near the end that we'd got a bit of "Oh what a beautiful morning!" but I don't think that's actually what the final tune is? Either way, it's a similar vibe - lots of music hall staples and/or songs from musicals. It's fine, for Winifred Atwell, but nothing to write home about.
Disappointing, as our only actually new track.
Swedish Rhapsody - Ray Martin (4)
Last time we saw this track, Mantovani was treating it with his usual slightly syrupy gusto. I quite liked it, despite myself, and was prepared to enjoy this version, too. Unfortunately, I then made the mistake of actually listening to this version.
There's not much differentiating it from Mantovani's version, in terms of interpretation. It's the same tune, in the same order, at a similar pace, with a similar mix of instruments. But... it's just worse?
For one, while it uses the same strings / pipes / accordion, it just lays them on less thickly at the start, which makes the track feel emptier. It also feels like it goes a bit slower, and leans heavier on the pipes, which weren't the main appeal of the other version. The accordion is underused, too, though it does come in halfway through, way too quiet.
I think I was misled by my version, which also credits a group called The Swingin' Marching Band. I thus expected either some swing or some marching band vibes or (with any luck) both. Instead I got neither, which was quite disappointing.
The tune is everything it was last time, but it feels more stately, less folk dancey, despite the little twiddle the pipes attempt at points. Sad.
Well, there you go. Three slightly worse versions of things we have already seen. I didn't love any of these, and I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite. None were egregious bad, but I wouldn't back them as Top 10 material. I guess they're all reasonably party-appropriate and inoffensive. Instrumental music for the back of a Christmas party with people who you'd much rather talk to than listen to music with - that's about as charitable as I can be here. One's interesting, at least, so...
Favourite of the bunch: Dragnet.

Favorite ND Soundtracks
Alright. I am a huge music nerd. For some time, I was a music major at college (I changed majors after having to take nine classes a semester because of all my ensembles). One of my hobbies is listening to movie and game scores. Some of the Nancy Drew games have some pretty great music. I don’t really know how I’d rank my favorites, but I’m going to list them in no particular order.
Shadow at Water’s Edge
Lovely traditional Japanese sound. Very calming yet it just sounds like someone is watching you.
The scenes in the city have some great music. Honestly? They are bops.
The music fits perfectly with the ambiance and mood. The music at the ryokan is haunting and beautiful and the music in the city is fun and carefree.
“Kasumi” is so wonderfully haunting and beautiful and horrifying at the same time. It’s beautiful and peaceful, and it makes me feel both sad and like I’m gonna die from being attacked by the yurei.
Some of the tracks in this don’t sound like they’re from a Nancy Drew game. They sound like they came straight out of a horror film.
Secret of Shadow Ranch
Western. Soooo western. A stereotypical cowboy movie score. I love it.
It makes me feel like I’m a cowboy in the wild west.
The guitar picking is perfect in “Dirk”. I love it so much that I listened and taught myself on the guitar and I played it too much because my sister was sick of it for a long time.
The ghost town music fits so well. A perfect combination of suspense and yeehaw.
The drums in “Lands”... Perfect. And the trombones in “Danger”... Great.
Curse of Blackmoor Manor
This score. It’s amazing. It makes me feel like I’m in an old English mansion poking around and searching through hidden passages. Oh wait...
This score seems like it should be the background music for a BBC show about royalty.
Some of the music is downright terrifying. Also, the dulcimer?! That instrument is underrated and used amazingly!
The piano and strings parts are just beautiful. “Memoirs” is one of my favorites. The use of dynamics in that piece is lovely.
This is probably the only music where a recorder sounds good.
Brigitte. I still know that song so well.
Legend of the Crystal Skull
Okay. As a jazz singer, this soundtrack spoke to my soul.
They mix horror and jazz and that makes me love it sooooo much.
I just really like jazz, okay?
“Bruno” hits different. It feels like you just walked into a 1930s New Orleans nightclub holding a cigarette and wearing a fur coat.
“Bayou” give me “Gonna Take You There” vibes.
Haunting of Castle Malloy
Say what you want about the game, but the music is beautiful.
“Nursery” still gives me chills. “Map” makes me feel like I should always be watching my back. “Grand” is rightly named.
The music in the pub are bangers.
As a Celtic music fan, this soundtrack is truly wonderful.
Warnings at Waverly Academy
This one fits the environment so well. Both suspenseful and youthful.
The cello. Ooooh, the cello. *chef’s kiss*
The violin solo... It’s so beautifully creepy and unsettling with the resonance and the reverb.
It just feels like late autumn/early winter. It has that vibe and it’s wonderful.
The Captive Curse
Again, as a musician, I’ve been exposed to lots of music, and some of that is traditional Bavarian music. This one combined the mystery of Nancy Drew games with the traditional music and it was done well.
“Girls” is both beautiful and slightly tragic. The piano, the violin, the cello, the everything. It feels like I should be out there wearing a dirndl with Nancy and remember all the girls before that have died at this castle.
Speaking of castle, “Castle” is so wonderfully mysterious. So is “Mystery”, of course. And the violin in “Legend”? It makes me feel curious.
The choir in “Creature” brings a whole new vibe to the game. Kinda gave me “Duel of Fates” vibes, if you know what I mean.
The Deadly Device
It sounds like it came straight out of a sci-fi film. It also gives me Doctor Who and Thor: Ragnarok vibes.
The repeated motif in “Research” sounds like “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”, don’t hate me.
It fits the techie nerd vibe as well as the “hello, this is murder” vibe.
Ghost of Thornton Hall
This one. Oooh ho ho, this one. It still gives me chills. The music adds so much to the game. It’s creepy enough already, but add this amazing music and you get one of the most creepy Nancy Drew games.
Oh, did I also mention that this music will bring you to tears? Yeah.
That little bit of background choir in some of the tracks?
The brass section in “Dark” has a feel of urgency.
The OPERA in the background. UGH, IT’S AMAZING. This is coming from a person who has sang opera before and DAMN is this stuff beautiful. The vocalese is amazing.
The rhyme... The rhyme.
“Past” is so beautiful and tragic and truly captivates the sadness of the entire situation.
That one time where the drums are pretty much a heartbeat? Freaks me out. Every time. I love it.
The Silent Spy
This one has amazing music and it’s also one of the plot points in the mystery.
The link between Kate and the piano is amazing. Every time I hear the piano, it’s a reminder of Kate and her presence.
Kate’s Theme is so simple, yet so beautiful.
The bagpipes in the background add a whole new layer of sadness. I am one of those people who actually loves the bagpipes.
It feels like a FRICKIN SPY/HEIST MOVIE.
At the same time, SCOTLAND.
The use of the electric guitar is very lovely.
Labyrinth of Lies
I love it. I love it. The music belongs there.
The use of traditional Greek inspired music is wonderful and really helps with the entire ambiance.
“Souls” sounds like it belongs in the underworld.
Sea of Darkness
Hoooooly moly, I love this music. The strings, the choir, the woodwinds, the brass? Everything.
This music makes me want to go sailing.
“The Word I Couldn’t Keep” is still an amazing, beautiful song and no one can tell me otherwise because I am right.
The music in the ice caves, “Waiting” is absolutely amazing. The reverb makes it sound like it’s actually coming from inside the caves.
Midnight in Salem
Again, say what you want about the game, but the music was amazing.
Okay, they had some bops and bangers in this game. I was grooving to these tunes.
It sounds so Halloweeny. It’s so delightfully creepy. It sounds like a Danny Elfman soundtrack and I am HERE for it.
The use of the harp in these tracks is wonderful. It sounds like they also used chimes in here, which fits well.
“Feelings” is so beautiful. Another one of those hauntingly beautiful tracks that hits you in the feels.
“Family” instantly transports me from wherever I am to a small town in the mid-autumn with a little creepy vibe.
I got GTH vibes from some of these. I loved it.
The Phantom of Venice music during Ned’s phone call was superb. I heard it and instantly had flashbacks to Nancy’s not-quite-stripper days.
Seriously. Danny Elfman vibes.
Feel free to add on!! I’d love to hear more about what other people think of the soundtracks.

OST #1 - Super Mario 64
Tumblr media
Super Mario 64 Developer: Nintendo EAD Publisher: Nintendo Composer: Koji Kondo Released June 23, 1996
playlist
oh, where to begin with this one...
this game is renowned globally as an absolute classic, an innovative title that essentially changed 3D platforming as we knew it to be, but who cares about any of that, how’s the music? most would call it excellent, being one of the most iconic soundtracks of the era, something everyone knows, but might it be overrated? has it aged well since 1996? let’s take another listen and find out!
(note to self: tumblr only allows 5 video embeds at a time, so i can only share 5 songs easily. oops!)
youtube
the soundtrack starts off with one of the cooler remixes of the classic SMB1 ground theme, with relatively simple instrumentation but absolutely mental drums, already setting the tone for everything to come and making it very clear that this is something new.
youtube
next we have one of the single most iconic pieces of video game music ever written and what is widely considered the main theme of the game, bob-omb battlefield! this song in and of itself is very well-written, a good example of what sound the N64 can produce, and above all, extremely catchy. it didn’t get its critical acclaim from nothing, it’s certainly a jam.
youtube
we also have the slide music, the next most iconic piece of video game music. i’m really glad koji kondo invented ska just for this game (i don’t think this is actually ska but i don’t know what else to call it lmao). it’s also a very interesting spin on the main theme, completely restructing the melody and chord progressions while still staying recognizable in a sense, and in general it’s really fun to listen to.
youtube
can’t talk about this game without giving credit to the pioneer of chill mario bangers, dire dire docks! i’m so glad video game composers collectively decided that water levels meant ballad-type pieces, because this stuff is sublime. i love the way the 6-bar phrasing makes the piece feel, it’s something i can’t particularly describe. OH one more thing about this is that it’s the first to show off midi channel fading, where individual channels can fade in and out at the game’s command, and in the case of the game, it does so as the player explores different areas, giving a very dynamic aspect to the levels it’s featured in that adds an extra layer of goodness to the song itself.
---
a few more mentions before i wrap this up with the last song: - snow mountain is among the most jolly music i’ve ever heard and i can’t get enough of it. - lethal lava land is a really cool song, with multiple parts interacting with each other in really cool ways - the percussion going a mile a minute at its own pulse with all these other really cool and distinct sounding instruments overlaying it makes for a very interesting sound that fits the stages well. - haunted house isn’t called that for no reason, it sounds genuinely haunting and has a really cool sound to it in general. i think it also has channels that come in at different points of the mansion like dire dire docks did, like that marimba sounding instrument. - cave dungeon is probably one of my favorite takes on the SMB1 underground theme ever made, up there with 3D world’s. no idea why the OST version doesn’t have the choir in the beginning like it does in-game, which is lame because that’s a high point for me, but the song is still excellent. i especially love the part where it’s just the choir and percussion when you’re in the deepest part of the cave where you find the metal portal. great track - powerful mario: it may be a short loop but i LOVE the instrumentation and sound of it, really cool remix of a really cool remix of the starman theme - metallic mario:
Tumblr media
also short but MAN does koji know how to make these short power-up songs sound sick as heck koopa’s road: when listening to this just now i literally just discovered the horn hits in the background at 0:18 so that should tell you how good this song is bowser theme: my man koji was really in da booth making bowser sound absolutely dastardly ultimate koopa: my man koji was really in da booth making bowser sound absolutely evil. the sounds and setting of this final boss fight have resonated with me for years, and of all the video game music i’ve heard (a LOT) this actually somehow remains one of my favorite final boss themes of all time.
---
youtube
as i said before, i only have so much room to add videos so i gotta skip to the end here. this credits song still hits hard after all these years, standing its ground as one of the most melancholy yet equally cheerful pieces of music in the franchise. it shows off the diversity of the game’s instrumentation wonderfully - not bound by the limits of gameplay sounds, it can use a lot more channel real estate, and it takes plenty advantage of it. also it may sound cheesy but that key change at the end still touches my soul in such a special way after all this time, and that IV - iv - I is just the icing on the cake (shoutouts to you if you know what that even means).
---
so is mario 64′s soundtrack any good? of course! i’d even say it hasn’t aged a day since it was released. sure, music nowadays is far more capable of producing good sounds than games back in 1996, but there’s something so nice about these old sounds that i just cannot let go of. i’ve always been in love with these really old instruments for whatever reason, their sound is just so charming to me, and it’s stuff like that that made me want to begin this project anyway.
back to the matter at hand though. mario 64′s soundtrack is honestly timeless - i’m of the belief that good compositions never age, and this game is hard proof. i actually never realized just how much i actually love this soundtrack until relistening to it in its entirety, and i’m glad i could start this project off on such a tremendous note as this one.
---
thank you so much for reading! if you have any questions or feedback, send me a message and i’ll try to get to it as soon as i can. check back here in a bit for pilotwings 64! see you then!!
---
RESULTS:
Top 3 Tracks: 1. Staff Roll 2. Ultimate Koopa 3. Lethal Lava Land

Album Review: Anteros
Tumblr media
Artist:  Anteros
Title:  When We Land
Record Label: Distiller Records
Rating: 8.0/10
There’s no denying that Anteros glimmer with a pop sensibility and this burns brightly on their much-anticipated debut album ‘When We Land’. Catchy and instantly hummable, it’s easy (and you could say a little ignorant) to write them off as a simple indie-pop act; the slightest burrow beneath the surface and you’ll find shards of post-punk, 70s rock anthemics, strutting disco grooves and intimate moments that start off as ballads but swell to empowering, life affirming call to arms.
youtube
‘When We Land’ is honed around choruses that soar to dizzying, anthemic heights and danceable rhymes that disguise some of the more poignant, sorrowful moments on Anteros’ debut. Afterall, isn’t all great music happy and jolly on the surface but rooted in despair below deck? Something the four piece have mastered is the dynamic of switching from quiet verses to explosive choruses; this is exemplified by the reworked ‘Breakfast’ taken from the 2016 EP of the same name. The album version is a taut, rougher take that’s all spectral guitars and drum machines in the verses but colossal sounding in the chorus, driven by frontperson Laura Hayden’s impressive vocal delivery. ‘Afterglow’ is a pea from the same pod when it comes to it’s sonic DNA; a song that’s wrapped around icy guitar shards as the song commences, but as the track reaches it’s rousing epicentre, volume levels increase as Hayden can be heard bellowing “and when your scars start to show/I’ll be there if you let me know/in the shadow of your afterglow.” ‘Fool Moon’s choppy, tropical strut is another moment where ‘When We Land’ curiously meanders before making a giant leap once the chorus kicks in with gusto. It’s here when Hayden can be heard declaring “drown out the voices in my head/take back the words we left unsaid” as intricate guitar lines coalesce with swaggering drums beats. Then there’s ‘Drive On’, a soaring, cathartic sashay through jerky drum patterns, quirky synths and arena friendly guitar waves. It’s all smothered in a relatable catharsis when Hayden muses “we carry on through the wasteland/drive on”, it makes you want to jump in your car and drive off into the sunset with all your worries trailing behind you.
youtube
Aside from custom built bangers, ‘When We Land’ bristles with an empowering, triumphant appeal; ‘Ordinary Girl’ combines piano with delicate percussion, as swooning strings envelope enormous drum stomps. This propels the band’s vocalist to the stratosphere as she announces, “it’s not an ordinary world/and you’re not an ordinary girl”. ‘Let It Out’ is Anteros at their most stripped back; just Hayden and a scratchy guitar and the kind of sentimental lyrics that could melt the coldest of hearts “all my dreams fade away when I hear you call my name.” What commences in a minimal fashion soon swells to a grand, lush example of the London band flexing their grandiose side, as orchestral flourishes expand to something resembling a Bond theme. ‘When We Land’ comes to a glorious close via the band’s eponymous track, this is the moment where you envisage live shows coming to an end via a technicolour ticker-tape explosion as Anteros wrap up their debut in a truly epic style.
youtube
Never mind Anteros’ debut being tagged ‘When We Land’, with this band the sky is the limit – they’ll not be touching down any time soon.

JayTim Rec List 1/?
In an effort to extricate myself out of the deep, dark, dank cave that is the marvel cinematic universe (or just marvel in general) for more than two minutes, here is a list of jaytim fics that I recently read, enjoyed and or generally love under the read more.
Please remember to kudos/like/bookmark and tell the author how much you enjoyed their work!
READ:
dick grayson, snooping? it’s more likely than you’d think by dragonryder94 Words: ~3k | Complete
dick knows that something is up between jason and tim. he just doesn’t know what...not yet at least.
Comment: A Dick armed with memes and trying to have good ol’ brotherly Bonding Moments™ with Tim and Jason is just downright hilarious. A quick laugh and an absolute banger.
In Which Conner is Meddlesome for Tim's Own Good by GeneratorCat Words: ~2.7k | Complete
“Homecoming dance!” it proclaimed. “Saturday, Oct. 24th”. And then, at the bottom some bastard had written, “Do you have your date yet?”
Tim wanted to scream because no, he didn’t have his date yet, and he probably never would. He was too scared to ask them.
Comment: *slams fist on table* you have no idea how much I love high school aus goddamn and this is the cutest!! Do you want awkward teen angst? Kon being chill but also hilarious??? Tim making a fool of himself??? Then this is it. This wins all.
Plus note: Anything by GeneratorCat is great. Puns everywhere, a humour that will hurt your gut laughing, and a writing style that’s tighter than Jason’s abs.
do you wanna feel a little beautiful, baby by Sister Words: ~42k | Complete
"They're watching me," Jason says, when Daisy Mae has left.
"Who, the drag queens?" Tim says. His face is an inch from Jason's chest, and when the strobe lights flash their way he can see a drop of sweat moving down Jason's pecs. His mind feels staticky, bouncing from general outrage to a general desire to put his mouth on Jason's skin. He's too horny to be rational about any of this.
++
Tim goes to a gay club and finds himself embroiled in one of Jason's cases. Glitter is involved. Also crises of morality. Also booty shorts.
Comment: Case fic, baby!!! Listen, I have many weaknesses and they’re usually words starting with C and case fic happens to be one of them. The case was a riot, the secondary cast was a riot, and the jaytim was a blazing hot riot. This fic is lit from beginning to end. Guns, gangsters, glitter and gays everywhere. Really hits the G spot.
this pen was inked with the promise of you by clarityhiding  Words: ~21k (4/5) | WIP
Everyone has a mark-match, someone whose mark will match their own. No matter what, you will always meet your match after your mark comes in and before you die, it's just a fact of life.
Tim's mark starts to come in the summer he turns twelve. Less than a week later, his match is dead. He doesn't meet anyone at all in the time between.
Comment: I usually steer away from a/b/o fics since gender dynamics is not my thing but this is a goodie. I’ve only read the first chapter of this but I already know this is going to be a great time!!! But by great time, I also mean in a dark sense— @themandylion really hits the melancholic, listlessness, apathetic vibes of depression in the most wonderful, nuanced way, and when the emotions come, they’re explosive. Plus, the world building is amazing, and this is all in one chapter!
Cats, Bats, Kittens, and Hatchlings by ThePackWantstheD Words: ~72k (18/?) | WIP
In which Selina finds Jason trying to steal Batman's tires and offers to make his sticky fingers a bit stickier, Bruce finds Tim taking pictures of him and thinks that an orphan can take care of an abandoned boy, and the boys learn that life is a lot easier when there's another sidekick around to talk to.
Comment: This fic took my broken heart—my broken, fragmented, crowbar-shaped holed heart—and lovingly stuck cat shaped plasters all over it. This fic was sweeter than a raspberry mocha with one sugar and cream on top. This fic will probably give me diabetes faster than any sugar addiction. This fic is just pure and warm and will shield me through torrential storms. It’s just that good.
Selina and Bruce as great mentor figures and Stray!Jason (not something I see quite often!) with Robin!Tim. Slow Burn.
Day 5: Fake/Pretend Relationship // Royalty AU by  CatChan
Tim stayed deathly silent, hoping that his iciness alone would convey the weight of his disapproval.
No such luck. The old earl kept prattling on about how much more suitable to rule Tim was compared to his older brother because at least Timothy had been adopted from a ducal family and not street performers.
Tim took a deep breath to calm himself, then smiled as sweetly as he could, and told the old fart that he would be sure to relay his message to his father the king.
Earl Duchamp blanched, and started stuttering. Tim didn't give him any sympathy, or wait around for his rushed excuses, instead storming out of the room.
Comment: Historical AU with exposition that’s so fascinating, it doesn’t feel like exposition. That’s a amazing feat alright. It’s just a lot of fun for such a short chapter (Like a fun pilot episode to a historical tv drama) and I don’t want say too much of the interactions because it might spoil the fic. Suffice to say, the world it builds leaves you wanting more so might as well jump in and read the whole collection while you’re at it.
"Mi cama es su cama" by redrobinfection (ChristmasRivers) Words: ~9k | Complete
JayTim Week 2018 - “Bed Sharing” (Day 6)
Tim and Jason aren’t friends. They’re barely allies at this point. But for whatever reason, they keep crashing each other’s apartments, lairs, and safehouses, all in search for a bed to crash in for a bit. It starts out simple - it’s just a safe place to catch a nap, a safe place to recover after an injury, a safe place to hang - but with each visit, it turns into something more - it’s a welcome place to hang, a comfortable place to recuperate, their safe haven in dire times. It might take awhile, but, slowly Jason and Tim turn into something more too.
Comment: So I read small bits and pieces of this during Jaytim Week, and while I haven’t fully read it cohesively in one sitting (before I fell into the marvel hole *cough cough*), what I do remember it was that it was a very soft and healing fic. If I had to describe the feelings and associated scenes this fic evokes, it’s a cosy, intimate blanket, and a warm body snoring beside you. Comfort packaged in a fic. Tim’s sleepy/sick talk was damn hilarious, and I really liked the gritty details involved with wound cleaning. I thought it was skilfully described.
Mania by Pisces314 Words: ~6k (3/?) | WIP
“I didn’t realize,” Dick’s voice startles Jason, but he doesn’t loosen his grip on Tim. When he looks up, Dick is staring at them with wide eyes. “That you two were...uh.”
It hits Jason then, what the position they’re in might look like from Dick’s point of view. His restraining hold on Tim, and Tim’s now submissive posture, curled up against his chest, probably look to an outsider like a comforting embrace between two people who are much more acquainted than they actually are. His face flushes, but he doesn’t bother to correct Dick’s misunderstanding.
Comment: @glaciya is almost always an auto-read for me. The fact that she can flip from cute space, jolly ranch kisses that kills you from sheer amount of fluff and goodness to this is mind blowing.Just from the first chap, it’s already got a great emotional reveal (count me shooketh), descriptions that really immerse you in the terse atmosphere between all the characters and writing that captures a great deal of nuance/overtone of hurt/comfort. It’s wild.
Dreams From the Sargasso by RivetingFabrications Words: ~46k (17/?) | WIP
Timothy Drake ventured out to solve the mystery behind his parents' deaths, but being taken captive by the most wanted pirate in history hadn't been part of the plan.
Comment: RivertingFabrications is also another auto read for me, and while I read this a long time ago, I remember that the JayTim interactions were fiery and terse, on the brink of something great, and the camraderie between Jason and the secondary characters was an absolute joy to read.
Viking AU | The Red Hunter by @drabblemeister Link is only to the first instalment
Comment: The only way I can describe the writing is just, lush. Amazing descriptions of the environment which intermingles with Tim’s inner monologue to create a tension that is off-the-charts and an action scene that demands heavy drums and an orchestra. It’s suspenseful, gripping, and engrossing, and this is only the first two drabbles.
Casebook of Detective Timothy Drake by chibi_nightowl Works: 5 | Words: ~150k | Series in Progress
Comment: The thing about @chibinightowl is that if you asked me to rec one of her works, I’d probably just start listing off her ao3 portfolio. Everything she writes is gold and I will accept it as actual currency if they let me (one day).
If I had to pick one (a harsh, cruel, gruelling etc. ask for a mortal like me) it would be this series. A series of case fics with never-was-a-vigilante Detective Tim, a fully fleshed out cast of secondary characters (Tim’s partner in particular is a favourite), exciting, intriguing cases that will keep you guessing and friction with Batman that is riveting to read. Gives me Nora Robert’s Eve Dallas Series and Karen Rose vibes. Love love love love love this series.
TO READ:
These are fics on which I plan to read, but the premise sounds too good not to be advertised:
If You Don't Grow by GeneratorCat Words: ~28k (8/?) | WIP
“I need to take care of myself. I can take care of myself.”
“You shouldn’t have to, you’re just a kid.” God, does Dick know that. He knows what it feels like to be doing things you shouldn’t have to do at such a young age. About feeling like you have to take care of yourself, be strong and useful.
He knows now it’s bullshit.
(Officer Dick Grayson meets Jason on the street.)
((Alternatively titled: In which Dick pulls a Bruce))
Comment: What more can I say. I’m a sucker for flawed mentor types who try their best!!!
Build A Dream With Me by Myoneloveismusic Words: ~10k | Complete
Tim fell hard and fast when Batman and Robin first appeared in Gotham. He followed them for years, taking pictures, and watching in awe form the shadows. But after one fateful encounter with the second Robin, Tim found himself falling in a different way. Everything got torn apart when Jason died and Tim forced himself to take on the role of Robin if it meant keeping Bruce sane. But when Jason returns from the dead and makes his reappearance back in Gotham, can the two repair what had been blown apart or will they be separated forever?
Comment: Teen!! Angst!! *throws confetti* but also paired up with @my-one-love-is-music‘s crafty way to frame fic like a movie scene and this sounds like a fun time.
Astra Inclinant by SociallyAwkwardFox (Maze_Runner_Fae) Words: ~30k | Complete
Every hero has a story. A tale spun by the Muses destined to pass from generation to generation, until the end of time. At the time of their conception, Fate already knows the paths they will walk in their lifetime and how it will end. She knows the stars they will see, the people they will meet, the scars they will bear-like badges of honor etched into their skin. With this knowledge, She designates a few to ensure every hero follows the correct path and completes their duty to the universe. These immortal beings act as a hero’s guide and watch over their lives, until their journey is complete. From one hero to the next they go, dedicating their lives to the universe and Fate’s will.
Comment: A ‘Hero’s Journey’ narrative never gets old (like BP!) and mix that with Greek Mythology and like a great, angsty jaytim fic. Featuring Seer!Tim and Hero!Jason.
Flying Blind by TheSkyIsALie Words: ~4k | Complete
In the wake of a catastrophic loss, it's the path Jason sets that Tim follows back to safety.
Comment: I mean damn look at the summary already! It’s premise I haven’t seen for jaytim before and the tags have the dangerous combo of Domestic Fluff and Hurt/Comfort aka just looks amazing.
Making Amends by writemydreams Words: ~11.8k (3/12) | WIP
A new drug called Cupid’s Heart arrives in Gotham and Blüdhaven. Highly addictive, it also serves as a potent aphrodisiac. Jason enlists Tim’s assistance in rooting out the drug in Gotham and discovering the source. Along the way, Jason hopes Tim will see he’s changed and that he’ll learn to trust him.
What started out as a simple drug case becomes more complex when Dick discovers Cupid’s Heart comes from a resort for struggling couples. Jason and Tim go undercover as pretend fiancés to find the drug, something difficult for Jason since all he wants is to be in a genuine relationship with Tim.
Comment: A case fic!!! And damn, the tags looks delicious, ‘Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Pining, Fake/Pretend Relationship, and Dick Grayson is a Good Brother.’ It just looks like a really good time.
Turnabout is Fair Play by Skalidra Words: 5.5k | Complete
When Jason gets an invitation to the Continental's latest competition, a simple game, he gladly accepts. It's a bit of fun, an opportunity to win a couple prizes and some recognition. That is, unless one of the other people assigned to his group gets in his way. May the best killer win.
Comment:  I mean, Skalidra is a guaranteed good time, and she does action scenes better than most published writers. The way she balances detail and action still results in a fast-paced, tense scene so this sounds like a perfect murderific jaunt for a bad day.
At Cosmos' End by RivetingFabrications Words: 11.8k (4/?) | WIP
Tim has quit Starfleet and gone rogue – the system can’t help everyone, despite its best intentions. But when he finds an olden spacecraft in the outermost reaches of space where none should be, he finds more mysteries than answers.
Comment: The tags says you don’t have to be a hard core trekkie to get the gist of what’s going on. It sounds amazing nonetheless.

@bliss-delight-jr Here are the song recs you requested! The list ended up being kinda comically long; way too long to put in a reply, so here it is (you asked for bops and jams and I added a bunch of bangers too bc I have a ton of bangers in my playlists and not many jams)
-“Topsy Turvy” from Hunchback of Notre Dame – movie and musical versions are both amazing, but the movie version is more of a consistent bop; the musical version is just a few clicks slower and is split in half by two numbers, which are both amazing, but don’t have the feel of a bop) -“Roundtable Rival” by Lindsey Stirling – a freaking JAM and also a BANGER -“Thrift Shop” by Vitamin String Quartet – a JAM -“La Llorona” from Coco – not a bop, a jam, or a banger, but like, it’s so GOOD -“The Court of Miracles” from Hunchback – again, the movie and musical versions are both great, and I’ve actually been using the musical version to get me up and moving in the morning, but the movie version is WAY more of a bop in terms of tempo and general feel; in the musical, Clopin sort of relishes having caught Quasi and Phoebus and the song is a slower kind of menacing, but in the movie, Clopin revels in being about to kill the Boys and the song is fast and bouncy and lively and a bop -“I’m the One That’s Cool” by The Guild feat. Felicia Day – a banger if I’ve ever heard one -“96,000” from In the Heights – a bop -“Carnaval del Barrio” from In the Heights – a jam that becomes a bop that becomes a banger -“The Rocky Road to Dublin” by The High Kings – a BOP -“Facade” from Jekyll and Hyde – closest to bop? I judge the difference between bops, jams, and bangers by the kind of movements that I naturally make when I hear the songs, and I make “banger” movements when I listen to “Facade,” but there’s something in my brain that’s telling me it’s too lively to be a banger, so I don’t know. It’s good, regardless. -“Murder, Murder” from Jekyll and Hyde – now this is a banger, for sure. A musical theater banger. -“Joy of the Lord” from Hands on a Hardbody – first, that’s a hardbody TRUCK. Don’t get any ideas. And “Joy of the Lord” is kinda repetitive, but it’s such a bop; I love it -“Born in Laredo” from Hands on a Hardbody – somewhere between a jam and a banger; this is an angry ballad, and I’m LIVING for it -“Can’t Sleep Love” by Pentatonix – somewhere between a jam and a bop -“Tavern Song (Thai Mol Piyas)” from Hunchback of Notre Dame – now this one is only in the musical, but the chorus is such a bop! The verses are closer to a jam and the whole song is so good. Fun fact: it’s the only song in the whole show that includes a language that is not English, Latin, or French! -“Esmeralda” from Hunchback of Notre Dame – I’m so sorry that there’s so much Hunchback on here, but it’s Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s fault for writing such Damn Good Music, and I’m a little obsessed rn since I’m in the thing. But “Esmeralda” is the Act I finale and it’s a musical theater BANGER. I get CHILLS every time. -“Un Poco Loco” from Coco – a bop, pure and simple. It’s so cute. -“Istanbul” by They Might Be Giants – also a bop. Very catchy. Fun fact: the first time I heard this song it was a Barbershop cover on YouTube, and for a solid five years I didn’t understand that it was a cover and not an original, bc I’d never heard the original and I’d never heard of They Might Be Giants, so I figured it was the name of the quartet the guy singing it was in (it was one of those quartet-with-yourself things YouTube vocalists love but I digress). I also didn’t get the concept of YouTube cover artists arranging their own covers if they wanted to genre-bend, so I was v disappointed when I couldn’t find the sheet music for my own Barbershop quartet to sing at contest -“I See Fire” by Peter Hollens – a jam -“Help!” by The Beatles – a bop -“All for the Best” from Godspell – a very fun bop that plays on multiple meanings of the phrase “all for the best” and there are some pretty dang cute videos of high school productions of this one -“Alas for You” from Godspell – a BANGER. A righteous-anger BANGER. If I recall the plot of the show correctly, this is Jesus losing it in the temple that folks turned into a marketplace. -“Flip Flop and Fly” by Ellis Hall – the first place I heard this was in Chicken Run as a kid, and I don’t know if it was written specifically for the movie or not. All I know is that it’s a futzing BOP. -“Flintstones” by Jacob Collier – a BOP. -“What the Heck I Gotta Do” from 21 Chump Street – 21 Chump Street is a 15-minute mini-musical written & composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, based on a true story, and “What the Heck I Gotta Do” is such a cute bop. -“Run, Freedom, Run!” from Urinetown – Yes that’s what the musical is called. It’s an Experience. “Run, Freedom, Run!” is a BOP, though. -“Cop Song” from Urinetown – A bop that becomes a banger -“Jet Set” from Catch Me If You Can – a BOP. Honestly this whole musical is so good. It’s a bit like Cheez-Its in that you kind of forget about it when you’ve got more interesting options available, but then you choose it and you’re like, “I forgot how good this was!” That’s Catch Me. And yes, it’s based on the Leo DiCaprio movie. -“Somebody’s Eyes” from Footloose: the Musical – I don’t really have strong feelings about this musical, but “Somebody’s Eyes” is fun. It’s a jam. -“Jolly Holiday” from Mary Poppins: the Musical – A bop. Mary Poppins the movie was my CHILDHOOD and I got really excited when I heard that it was a musical too, and I love the musical. They add huge chunks to the songs that aren’t in the movie, but they sound good and stand pretty well on their own. “Supercal” and “Step in Time” get honorable mentions, because I adore them both, but the musical versions don’t really fit into the bop/jam/banger categories. I 100% recommend watching a video of “Step in Time” though; the choreography is KILLER. -“We Go Together” by David Tennant and Catherine Tate – this is a bonus track on the soundtrack for the Much Ado About Nothing where David and Catherine were Benedick and Beatrice, and this song is such a cute bop that encapsulates the Beatrice/Benedick dynamic really well. It’s great and I kinda wanna see if I can convince a future boyfriend to sing it with me. -“Moon Goddess” by Jocelyn Hagen – this is a choir piece, and you wouldn’t expect a choir piece to be a banger, but “Moon Goddess” is a BANGER. Trust me. -“Godzilla Eats Las Vegas” by Eric Whitacre – it’s a concert band piece and I guess it could maybe be a banger but I really just want you to listen to it because it’s exactly what it sounds like and it’s HILARIOUS. -“Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance – another concert band piece, and kinda long, but it’s a jam that becomes a banger, and it’s spoopy too; perfect for Halloween Season -“The Typewriter” by Leroy Anderson – a concert band piece where the primary soloist plays an Actual Literal Typewriter and it’s great. A bop. -“Livin’ It Up on Top” from Hadestown – a BOP. The musical is one of those concept-album musicals and it’s a Great-Depression-era retelling of the Orpheus and Euridice story and it’s GREAT. -“Way Down Hadestown” from Hadestown – also a bop -“Our Lady of the Underground” from Hadestown – Persephone gets to start Act II with a kickass solo and it’s a JAM. I adore it and I really wanna sing it for a hypothetical voice recital -“You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” by The Offspring – a BANGER -“When You’re Evil” by Aurelio Voltaire – a JAM. A SPOOPY jam. -“The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by The Charlie Daniels Band – a bop and a banger all at once. I adore it. -“Down in New Orleans” from The Princess and the Frog – both the reprise and the original are such good bops, but I especially love the reprise because Anika Noni Rose’s voice is ANGELIC. -“Through Heaven’s Eyes” from The Prince of Egypt – I adore this whole soundtrack with my whole soul, but “Through Heaven’s Eyes” is the only song that really fits into a bop/jam/banger category, and that only barely. It’s a bop if you squint, but regardless it’s really good and I love it. -“The Mad Hatter” from Wonderland – a musical theater banger. The new Mad Hatter is a woman, and she’s a mezzo-soprano, so you know what that means: a jazzy introduction song where she gets to belt her heart out and it’s great. -“I Will Prevail” from Wonderland – the Mad Hatter’s other solo, also a banger, goes even harder than the first one, because It’s Act Two, Bitches, Shit’s Gettin’ Real -“I’ll Think of You” by Kurt Hugo Schneider – a cute little a capella bop. I definitely recommend watching the video on this one because the patty-cake thing the singers do while singing is really impressive and really cute. -“Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” from Seussical the Musical – listen this musical is so cute, and I’d love to play Gertrude McFuzz, because she’s so cute, but I’d ESPECIALLY love to play the Cat in the Hat, because he falls into the category of Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral, Spritely Character Where Gender Doesn’t Matter in Casting (others in this category include Puck from Midsummer, Ariel from The Tempest, and Clopin from Hunchback—all characters I want to play). And this song is the opening number and it’s a really fun bop. -“Tango: Maureen” from RENT – a jam. Makes me want to learn how to tango. -“La Vie Boheme” from RENT – a BANGER. -“The Road Goes On” from The Lord of the Rings: the Musical – YES, this is a real musical. YES, I’m as excited as you are. This song is a bop, through and through. -“Both Sides of the Coin” from The Mystery of Edwin Drood – a BOP. The whole musical is wonderful and I love it and you should listen to it (have the Wikipedia summary pulled up while you do; since it’s based on a book that never technically ends, since Dickens died before he could finish it, the musical is a solve-it-yourself with multiple endings, where the audience picks the ending every night) -“Be Good or Be Gone” from Pump Boys and Dinettes – somewhere between a bop and a banger -“Papaoutai” by Pentatonix feat. Lindsey Stirling – a bop -“Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” by Bing Crosby feat. The Andrews Sisters – a cute little bop -“Hobbit Drinking Medley” by Peter Hollens feat. Hank Green – such a bop. So cute. I really like the video -“Independence!” from The Trail to Oregon – this is a StarKid one, and it’s so fun. A bop. -“Rogues Are We” from Holy Musical B@man! – more StarKid. Closer to a banger. Especially fun to sing along when you’re alone in the car and you can belt out all the notes in all the character voices with no one to give you a funny look for it *I was trying not to do this, but just anything by Celtic Woman. It’s all so good! -“Finnegan’s Wake” by The High Kings – such a BOP, good LORD. -“Way Ahead of My Time” from Taxi Cabaret – it’s a bop, and it’s sung by a gay caveman. That is all you need to know. (There are a bunch of really good professional versions but I found a high schooler called Wyatt Walberg on YouTube doing it for his school and his version is really good) -“Any Kind of Dead Person” from Ghost Quartet – a BOP. And another spoopy bop, no less. -“Alive” by Skipinnish – I don’t remember where I first heard this, and my brain is telling me there’s a distinct probability that either you or Sock recommended it to me (OH I think it’s in a playlist one of y’all made for CotIG), so if you already know about it, then this is a reminder to listen to it again, because isn’t it so good?! A bop. -“Danger On the Dance Floor” by The Cog is Dead – A BANGER. A TANGO. A GREAT STORY. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT. -“Nicknackatory” by Mr. B, the Gentleman Rapper – so apparently gentleman rap (I think it’s called chap-hop, which makes me really happy) is an actual genre, and I love it with all my heart. This is hilarious. A bop.
So...yeah

Why One Piece Has Become A Global Phenomenon
If you've heard of anime or manga, you've heard of One Piece. It's stood tall when other series have fallen, thrived when other series have faltered, and somehow remained exciting despite the fact that the genre of "muscly dudes yelling about the strength of their dreams at other muscly dudes" is possibly the most oversaturated thing in the history of, well... anything. As of May 2018, it has sold over 440 million copies worldwide, making it the top-selling manga in history. So I guess it's safe to say that One Piece is kind of an global phenomenon. But why?
Well, I can't speak for everyone that has watched One Piece, so I won't try to. I'm sure that there are plenty of different reasons to get into it, whether it checks off on a lot of your fiction preferences, or whether or not you like watching magical villains get punched in their big, dumb faces, or whether you think that the "Pirate Rap" opening that 4Kids did for the series is actually kind of a banger (it is.) All I can do is talk about why I've been obsessed with it for over ten years, and try to relate that to the world. And with that in mind, why did One Piece become a global phenomenon?
Because One Piece forces you to keep up with One Piece.
I don't mean that in a bad way. I'm not implying that its creator Eiichiro Oda is a bad storyteller, one who would rather keep plot threads dangling just out of reach than give us any kind of satisfaction, because there are few manga/anime stories that are more satisfying than One Piece when Oda is writing at his best.
When (spoilers ahead, y'all) Luffy rings the golden bell of Shandora, or when the Straw Hat Crew raises their arms to give a silent goodbye to Vivi, or when Shanks steps in to end the Marineford war, or when Donquixote Doflamingo, an endlessly conniving and seemingly unstoppable warlord, is driven into the earth by Luffy's King Kong Gun, One Piece is "throw your hands in the air and bless our lord Oda on high" levels of satisfying.
One of the greatest things about One Piece is the sense of discovery that pervades every page. The sense of constant renewal through constant expansion. The sense that this full, huge world that you've loved diving into is only just the tip of the beautiful iceberg that Oda has in store. The sense that, one day, you will be able to build an entire living room fort out of all of the One Piece manga volumes you've collected, with a sign on it that says "No My Hero Academia Fans Allowed." I'm joking about that last part. OR AM I?
And it's that love of discovery that ties into what I do mean: That it's hard to be a One Piece fan and not get absolutely obsessed with One Piece. It's legitimately difficult. You just don't meet a lot of casual One Piece fans that have kept up with it for the twenty years that it's been around. Sure, you meet people that decided that the series wasn't for them and dropped it, and I'm sure that those people have some positive qualities. But if you meet another person that stays up to date with One Piece, in my experience, you're usually pulling up your sleeves to reveal the Straw Hat Jolly Roger tattoo on your arm in about six seconds.
One Piece is the theme park that, despite how early you arrived, you'll never get to all of the rides. No matter how long you stay on the One Piece wikia, there are always dozens more pages to read. Even when you think you have a character's backstory locked down, you read through their page one more time and realize "oh man. I didn't remember that in the Punk Hazard arc, there was a single flashback panel of Akainu talking to Enel about not wanting to anger the big mysterious threat in that one island in an unseen part of the New World that's been subtly hinted at for over fifteen years. Well, I guess I gotta reread that, along with reading the backstories of every character involved in that and every character that's ever been involved with every one of those characters, and oh my, it's 5AM."
When you think about your favorite fantasy franchises, how many of them can actually provide a sensation like that? Because, despite how huge they seem, many fictional places are actually very finite. There is a beginning and an end, and the only characters that really matter are the main ones. The history of the supporting cast and the places that they inhabit have details, but they don't have a past, or a future. They're just there to provide a setting for the next big fistfight. And yeah, One Piece arcs do usually end with Luffy screaming as he leaves knuckle imprints in a bad guy's skull, but that's never the real end of the story. There are still repercussions and reverberations and constant, wonderful reaction shots to deal with and sift through and make sense of.
And while, on the surface, the end goal seems very clear (Luffy becomes the Pirate King), no one is sure that that's the actual climax of the series. Will Luffy stay Pirate King? What is the fabled One Piece? Will someone get to it before the Straw Hats? What will happen to the World Government? What will happen to the rest of the Straw Hat crew? What is the final conflict going to be? Where will it take place? And, most importantly, what happened to my boy Gekko Moriah? I miss that dude like y'all wouldn't believe.
Unless you're Eiichiro Oda, you're still trying to figure One Piece out at all times. That is true for both the current arc, and the future arcs, and even some of the past arcs. Being a One Piece fan is being trapped in a state of constant wonder. And despite the fact that One Piece has basically held my life hostage for the past decade, it's a pretty cool way to be.
One Piece is a global phenomenon because it makes you feel great. And who would ever want to give that up?

Daniel Dockery WAS joking about that last part. All Might is the best. Check out his dumb Twitter.

Chapter 1: Romance Dawn
Finally, here we go: the first chapter of One Piece! Romance Dawn is also the name of the first arc, and I think it’s a pretty good one. Full of promise for what’s to come. Now, first things first- before actually reading chapter 1, I have to alert those of you who may not know about this banger:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eMfVfMkJDw
The infamous One Piece Rap. I’m not going into the history of the anime here, this is all about the manga, but I will say that the beginning is an accurate summary of the beginning of the manga. Gold Roger, the King of the Pirates, has left a great treasure somewhere. It’s explained later that One Piece is what people call the treasure, seeing as he left his vast wealth together. In... one piece. Neat.
Tumblr media
This is the picture that opens the first volume, and I think it sets the mood for a lot of One Piece; Luffy, our hero, having a good time with his friends. We’ll meet them all soon enough, but it’s time to actually start the chapter, with our first appearance of Luffy. Probably read the chapter before this post, but you do you.
Tumblr media
Cartoony kid with a giant mouth, Monkey D. Luffy. What does the D stand for? We’ll find out eventually, I’m sure. But right now we’re here to see Luffy establish his character:
Tumblr media
He’s tough and he’s got an iron will, and he’s going to prove himself to everyone- especially the pirates using his village as a base. Pretty typical shonen protagonist in a lot of ways, but Luffy has tenure. The pirates are kinda impressed by Luffy’s bravado, but they still aren’t going to let him sail with them. So says their captain Shanks:
Tumblr media
Shanks is a pretty cool guy. Very chill, and takes Luffy seriously even though he’s a pushy kid. He may be poking fun at Luffy, but he’s got a good point- Luffy is a kid and the sea is dangerous. If Luffy can’t swim, he’s going to be in big trouble. Shanks’s crew are generally hanging around and being jolly while this happens, which seems to be what they do most of the time. You can see why Luffy’s enamoured with them, and promises to learn to swim so he can join them. Either way, Shanks has been hanging around Luffy’s village for a year, so his crew, the Red Hair Pirates, are gonna sail off before too long. While everyone else is having a good time, however, a mountain bandit named Higuma the Bear makes a dramatic entrance.
Tumblr media
What’re you eating there, Luffy? Anyway, Higuma wants grog, and the pirates have drank the lot. Shanks offers him a bottle that hadn’t been touched yet- you know, because he’s a cool guy- and gets it broken in his face for his troubles. Higuma’s not playing. His bounty is 8 million berry and he’s killed 56 people. Berry (or beri, or beli, or even belly) is the currency of the setting, and 8 million is nothing to scoff at- for reference, 10,000 berry would buy you a very expensive shirt, as an example Oda gives later. Shanks plays it off and Higuma leaves, and Luffy is furious that Shanks didn’t stand up and fight the bandit. He goes to leave, and...
Tumblr media
Oda loves his reaction faces, and here’s our first real look at them. Yes, the fruit Luffy was eating was a valuable treasure: a Devil Fruit that the Red Hair Pirates had looted from another ship. Luffy ate it, and now his body is made of rubber, but there’s a price: he will never be able to swim. Oops. For those curious about the Devil Fruits and their rules, we’ll get to it eventually, don’t worry. Anyway, a while later, it’s the day the pirates will set sail, and Luffy isn’t concerned- he doesn’t care about sailing with them any more after Shanks disappointed him. However, Higuma comes back to the bar, and Luffy picks a fight:
Tumblr media
It doesn’t go well. Still, Luffy’s made of rubber now, and that means he can take a hit like a champ, despite being a literal child. He gets beat up until Shanks shows up, but Higuma isn’t concerned. He thinks Shanks is a chump and has a bandit pull a gun on him.
Tumblr media
Turns out Shanks being chill is a symptom of the ice in his veins, because he absolutely doesn’t give a shit as the guy threatening him gets executed. An icon. Up next are two panels that establish a lot of the tone of the series to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good pirates fight for their friends, and they don’t care what they have to do to defend them. This is basically Luffy’s entire deal going forward, and it shows how much he does still really idolise Shanks. Luffy’s a bit of a brat right now, but he’s still a good boy who wants to take care of everyone.
Tumblr media
Shanks’s first mate (who, like the rest of his crew at this point, is still unnamed) takes out the mountain bandits single-handedly and with basically no effort, so that’s cool. Higuma immediately gets the hell out of town, taking Luffy onto a small boat and kicking him into the water. Luffy can’t swim, and we’re about to learn why being helpless in the water is such a problem in the One Piece world:
Tumblr media
This is what they call a Sea King. The world of One Piece is mostly islands of varying size, separated by a lot of water. We’ll get specific details about the world and setting later, but the big thing to know right now is that these things are everywhere. Pirates have to be ready to defend themselves from actual kaiju at a moments notice. Maybe Higuma realised he wasn’t ready for the big leagues the second before he got eaten. But what about Luffy, left in the water? Not to worry, Shanks shows up and frightens the Sea King away. Really, he tells it to leave and it does.
Tumblr media
Luffy is saved, and he believes in Shanks once again! But at what cost...?
Tumblr media
In a world where there’s giant monsters and pirates everywhere, Shanks sacrificed his arm for a child. For real, Shanks is a great character who inspires Luffy to do everything he does in the future. But for now, having saved Luffy and the village from the mountain bandits, his crew is ready to go. Luffy knows he’s not ready to sail with them yet, but he has a goal for the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shanks gives Luffy his straw hat, saying it means a lot to him and that, once Luffy is a great pirate, he can give it back. Then he sails away, leaving Luffy to prepare. Ten years later, at that very spot, Luffy begins his quest to become King of the Pirates. He talked up his punch as having the strength of a pistol as a kid, but can he live up to his boast?
Tumblr media
Of course he can. He’s our hero!
Tumblr media
And with this a grand adventure begins. It’s been a long time since I last read this chapter, and I’m glad to see how much it lives up to the legacy it created, and sets up so much of the tone and themes. It was an extra long chapter, as is pretty standard for chapter 1s in manga, and future posts won’t be as long, probably. Either way, I’m excited to be embarking on Luffy’s journey alongside him! Even though it’s for the second time...
