Firelight
Yeah, so I found the lumen au from @meliapis and I also saw this and was like, yeah, bet my dudes. @maraozdrawsfanart for you buddy🎁@vastaya-simp I was inspired by some of your head cannons, hope you don't mind.
🦇Scar x gn!AFAB Reader (no specific pronouns)
🦺SFW, only warning is that is will be long and probably full of mistakes because I am a goofy goober.
Part 1 of ?
///You///
You were 13 when the ball of dark purple and blue light appeared, floating around your head as if curious about it's new friend. None of the other kids you hung around knew what it was and you had no parents to guide you. Shimmer had stolen them, like most of the children on the streets.
The light should have frightened you, made you wary, but it had a calming affect on you. It was also really cute, with little ears like a bat. And you didn't have to feed it, so it didn't trouble you. All it did was follow you, hide in your hair and chase after those who even looked at you funny.
You found work as a runner for the brothels and other establishments, earning meals and a safe place to sleep. Some of the workers took pity on you, buying you clothes, letting you use their personal baths to clean up. Smelly children drove clients away.
One of the workers, a woman named Clara, took notice of the little ball of light and cooed loudly. "Oh look at that, a lumen! You have a soul mate!"
In confusion, you held your little 'friend' in your hands and tilted your head. "A what?"
She laughed, waving her cigarette around with the movements of her hands, making the smoke waft into your face. "My sweet little petal. A lumen! It means out there in this cold, awful world is someone waiting for you." In a softer and kinder tone, she added: "And hold it close. You don't know how lucky you are."
And that was all the information you got about it and it was overwhelming to a 13 year old from the streets of Zaun. A soulmate sounded bigger than life at this age and what if you never found them? What if they didn't like you? What if they died before you met them? Would you lose your little friend too? Oh...what if they were a Piltie? You shivered. Pompous gilded vipers.
Cradling the lumen to your chest, you made a quiet promise that you would protect it.
///Scar///
His didn't appear until much later and your lumen was bright. At least at first. It almost shimmered as it ran over his arms, his hands, his ears. It liked to stay very close to him, which he never minded, but you seemed to be very touchy. He always felt like he was being held or kissed on.
When it first appeared, it was night time and he had been sitting with Ekko up in the tree, listening to him make plans about raiding some warehouse for food. If the smaller boy hadn't been there, he would have fallen to his death.
"Whoa, shit man! Is that what I think it is?" Ekko steadied him, slowly letting him go after he made sure Scar wasn't going to fall out of the tree.
It was, it really was. He wasn't mad or scared, not even annoyed. But he was shocked. He had a soul mate? And it was only now appearing?
"Well?" Ekko gave him a look. "Come on man, say or do something!" This was a big deal and so special. Ekko would have been elated to get his own.
"Bright." Was all Scar said, blinking a couple times, moving his head away as you lumen tickled his ears.
"Isn't that a good thing?" Ekko watched as it inspected Scar and then him, but it wasn't as interested in Ekko. Obviously.
Scar shrugged and sighed as the lumen ran head first into a firelight, knocking the poor thing back and the bug out of the sky. Well, at least he wouldn't be bored.
The kids in the hide out loved your lumen and it let them chase it around, but was never too far from Scar. Every now and then it would return to him and the light would flutter, as if communicating with him. What was he supposed to do with it? Talk to it? He really had no idea.
But then one night, the light faded, very quickly and it laid on his pillow, unmoving. Scar feared the worst and ran for Ekko, unsure of who else to turn to.
Ekko rubbed the sleep from his eyes and bent down, looking at it. "Maybe they're hurt?" He looked up at Scar and regretted saying that immediately. It made the tall chirean pace. "Well, do you even interact with it?"
"How?" Scar wanted to know. What was he supposed to do with this little ball of bright light that followed him everywhere and teased his ears?
Ekko sighed and hung his head. That was what the problem was. "Dude, you have act like you want it. You can touch it, hold it, talk to it." He held his hands out towards the lumen. "It looks depressed."
Scar scratched his head and gave Ekko a puzzling look, but he didn't argue with him. Gently, he scooped up the lumen and cradled it in his large hands and he suddenly became nervous that he might crush it. As soon as he made contact with it, the light flickered a bit brighter.
"See, it just wanted you." Ekko yawned and playfully smacked Scar's arm. "Now don't wake me up again." And then his friend drug himself back to his bed.
Scar just sat on the bed, the lumen in his hands, flickering a bit brighter and brighter slowly. Like he was petting a kitten, he gently stroked the lumen and it spun almost like it was happy. Uh. So all he had to show it affection? Or just acknowledge it? No one had really told him about that. Just what a lumen meant.
He wasn't a very sappy guy, but the fact the lumen wanted his attention so bad kind of made him melt a bit. Laying down and getting comfortable, all while cradling your lumen, he took a deep breath and placed it under his chin, safely tucking it. The lumen nuzzled against him and he chuckled softly. "Good night, my firelight." He whispered to it, but really, he hoped you could hear it too.
///You///
Your little friend loved your hair and would hide in it often, but it had a really good hiding place in your hooded vest. When you got older, you turned to actual running. Which meant that you smuggled packages from drop point A to drop point B. Nothing more or less.
You had to be fast, smart, and sly and getting caught was not an option. For an even further amount of security, you wore a mask and different clothes while you worked. No one knew what you did but you had a comfortable life, at least, for a Zaunite.
The lumen was very handy in certain situations and it became a partner of sorts. You even knew what certain flickering meant. Fast- danger. Slow- coast is clear. X amount of rapid blinks- how many enforcers. Thanks to your little friend, you managed to stay out of trouble. It made you really good at what you did.
The want to leave Zaun and Piltover before it exploded was a drive to save so much of your money and live under your means, but something also told you not leave. That you had to stay here. Maybe it was the lumen and the way it seemed to almost pout when you put the money away or look at maps of where you could go.
You just couldn't leave when you had the chance. So you'd take more jobs and while you never knew what were in the packages (you'd be stupid to look), you knew your work was going to get you into some kind of trouble one day.
But the other choices of work were not any better. Brothels, mercs, or shimmer; that was all that was left in this forsaken city. You did what you could without being too much on the radar. However, someone was hiring your service to smuggle things for a Piltie scientist or that was what you assumed. You never saw your clients.
The lumen didn't like this job at all and tried to push your hand away when you reached for the package, whirling around and trying to lead you away.
"Come on, stop that. If we don't get moving, we'll draw attention." You softly grabbed it and tucked it into its usual spot in your hood and made sure your mask was still on. The strap was starting to wear out and you'd have to replace it soon.
It stopped but you could almost feel the pouting. "Yeah, well, the pay is good." You muttered and tucked the package into your pack and then climbed up the pipe towards the roof tops. Got to be fast, you had a short window before the enforcers would be patrolling by the other drop point.
"Hang on my little love." You sniffed before taking off in a full sprint, going roof to roof, scaling buildings, dropping into alleys, staying out of sight and mind. You had to stop a couple times, as you swore you heard some sort of whirling around you, but when you would look, nothing was there. No, you were being followed, you could feel it.
"Oh, shit." You breathed, panting, looking around. Out of the corner of your eye you could see streaks of green, like lights flashing in a blink of an eye. You felt your lumen press against your neck and your hand went instinctively to your neck, cradling it. "No, no. Stay in there. I got this." You whispered, taking off again. You had your ways.
///Scar///
Your lumen was tucked away in his collar safely, but it didn't seem to want to be there at this very moment, when he need it to be the most.
This runner was moving shimmer, a fair amount of it. It didn't matter if they knew it or not, it had to be stopped.
Ekko, Scar, and a couple of the others had set up the runner after watching the drop points for months now. It had been a very well thought out and meticulous plan on Ekko's part, since this runner was incredibly good at their job.
Once again, the lumen tried to leave the collar and carefully he clapped his hand over it, growling a warning. No. No, stop. It was going to blow their cover and he gritted his teeth. Maybe he should have stayed behind.
Ekko gave the signal and made the first swoop in, effectively tripping the runner with a swipe to the legs. They weren't down for long. And man, they were really fast.
A good roll and they were dropping down into a tight alley, running towards some old tunnels that had once been used as some black market, before the enforcers shut it down.
"Cut them off!" Ekko's distorted voice called out and the others went in, trails of lime green following them.
Gripping his spear, Scar broke off from the rest, knowing there was a man hole that dropped right down in the path of this runner. He could get them and stop the delivery.
As soon as the man hole appeared, he jumped off his board and slid to a stop, grabbing it from the air, and used the spear to pry the lid up, tossing it out of the way. With his sensitive hearing, he could hear the echoes of boots running in the tunnels, followed by the whirling of hover boards. Quickly he jumped down and stalked forward a bit, smirking under his mask as the sounds got closer and closer.
He must've looked so terrifying in the dim light, with that mask, the metal claws, his lumbering height, because the runner skid to a stop and almost fell over themselves, cursing.
They weren't very big, but they were quick. Scar knew better than to underestimate what they could do. The lumen against his neck again struggled, making him growl menacingly, the sound vibrating through the tunnel.
///You///
Shit, shit, shit!
No matter how many twists, tricks, and turns you made, they seemed to be right on your heels and then there was the big one- mask like a skeletal bat or rat, tall and that spear in a clawed hand-Janna help you.
When you stopped, you almost fell forward, catching yourself barely and you froze in place, keeping your eyes on this terrifying figure. That look was purposeful and you were almost impressed, if it wasn't you that it was being used against. The growl they let out even frightened you more.
"Stop!" You almost turned around, but fear of taking your eyes off the big one stopped you. The lumen in your hood edged forward and you blocked it from leaving. No, if it came out, you could lose it.
Taking off the satchel, you tossed it at the masked figure behind you, keeping both them and the big one in your sights. "You can have it, just let me go!" You'd have to leave, immediately. The client could send someone after you, your reputation would be tarnished. You had enough money.
The owl masked figure walked forward and snatched the satchel, watching you for a moment before backing away while opening the satchel and inspecting the package.
"Who are you people?" You looked at all the masks, the paint covered clothes, the amazing boards they rode on.
No one answered you and it made you even more unnerved. But panic rose as your little friend escaped and flew out of your hood, flashing bright.
"No!" You shouted and tried to catch it but it flew towards the large figure, who was also struggling with something in his hands.
"Wait!" The owl mask shouted, dropping the satchel and walking towards both you and the big one. "Let it go!"
They looked up at the owl mask and then at you, confused when the purple and blue lumen began to circle their hands. No, wait, what did that mean? You didn't understand what these blinks meant.
"Let it go." Owl mask repeated, holding his hand up at you to stop you from doing anything.
Slowly, the clawed hands opened and the brightest ball of light flew straight up and then over to you, acting like it was looking you over.
"Oh!" One of the others gasped and moved forward. Now you were freaked out.
"What's happening?" You asked as your little friend bumped into the brighter lumen and a large flash of light made you jump. You tried to grab it, but it avoided you to nuzzle the other lumen. "Oh." This was it, wasn't it? That was your lumen, who followed-
Just moments ago you were scared out of your wits, running for your life, sure these people were going to kill you. That who ever was behind that terrifying mask was going to kill you. But, this was them. Your soul mate.
Who ever they were, was frozen in place and staring right at you. Both of your faces were obscured and stuck in a damp, musty tunnel. It was not a good first impression.
"This just got complicated." Another masked person said. "Maybe we should take them back?"
Back? Back where? You felt a soft caress on your cheek and you knew it was the lumen, trying to calm your nerves. You had never seen it so bright before. "I don't-"
Before you could finish your sentence, the owl mask reached into one of they're pockets and pulled out what looked like a blind fold. "You need to come with us."
Oh, that was bold. "Oh I do? You're going to just chase me down and frighten me and now I'm coming over for tea?" You looked at them all. "Are you for real?"
"Look-" They pointed at the lumens, going from you to the tall one and circling around one another. "Things just changed. Do you want to fight us when they're doing that? You really want to fight him?" They pointed at the tall one. Him. They pointed at him. Well, that was one thing you knew about him, that and he was really tall.
You'd have to take off your mask and you could feel the emotion coming off of the big boy. He was in shock or despair. Or both. You were too, this was crazy.
"Damn it." You muttered, pushing your hood back and undoing the clasp of the mask, groaning when the strap actually snapped. This was a great first meeting.
///Scar///
There was no way. The runner was his soul mate? It made sense why the lumen was acting up and trying so hard to get out of his collar but of all the ways to meet you, this was not ideal.
You were also their target, so now what were they going to do? If Ekko hadn't stepped in, he'd still be staring at you, dumbfounded.
When you pushed back your hood and your mask fell off, his heart jumped into his throat. There was no way that you were his soul mate. You were just beyond beautiful to him. Even the way you were looking at all of them with mistrust was just attractive to him. Was this how it was supposed to be or were you just really good looking?
After securing the blind fold, Ekko nodded at him. Scar just stood there, looking between you and him, as if pleading to not make him pick you up. He didn't think he could handle it right now.
"You're the strongest one. Pick 'em up." He nudged Scar and finally, he had to snap out of it and do something.
"Wait, pick who-?" Whatever you were saying turned into a yelp as he scooped you up and awkwardly held you for a second before getting on his board. "Why didn't anyone warn me?" You were terrified and he got that, but his ears twitched at the pitch.
Ekko put his hands on his head and exhaled, the mask obscuring what ever expression he had on his face. "Come on, we have to figure this out."

I just started reading your rhett/Tessa story and I adore it! If it isn't out of line or too much trouble could I request a lumen au for Tessa and Rhett? I adored the one you did for Ronnie and Jake and I can't help but wonder what it would be like for Tessa and Rhett.
Tumblr media
I am so glad you've liked here to stay so far!! and ABSOLUTELY YOU CAN HOLY SHIT NOW THIS IS A CONCEPT (also uh....she was getting kinda long so I stopped at a very crucial moment but if you want more...just lemme know cause i have more lol)
to refresh on what a lumen is: "lumens take on the form of a small ball of light and vary in color from person to person. when you meet your soulmate your lumen will emit a bright light and upon brushing with your soulmate's lumen they both will give off a flash of light." - from @meliapis amazing arcane drabble there are windows to the soul(mate) please go read and review!! And then I added that a person's lumen flies in through their window at midnight on their 16th birthday.
SO with Rhett and Tess, they went to high school together.
And she's a few months younger than him (I think?? idk when his birthday is but we're gonna go with he's older for now until proven otherwise).
So Rhett gets his Lumen first, on the stroke of midnight when he turns 16. He's got his window open like his mama told him to and he's laying in bed, staring at the ceiling trying to will himself to not worry about it. It's no big deal. Just a piece of his soulmate is about to fly down from...wherever Lumens come from. No big deal.
The clock in the hall starts dinging and just like that, his room is illuminated with a soft yellow light. He's never sat up so fast in his entire life. Blankets go flying.
It just floats there in the middle of the room for a minute. A beautiful little ball of warm yellow, like a piece of the sun was in his room. It was calming the hammering of his heart inside his chest. Then it floated over to him and nuzzled itself against his cheek. It tingled, and it made him laugh.
So, ofc, he calls his Lumen Sunshine. That little piece of his soulmate, in those few months before he knows who it belongs to, never strays too far from him. Sticks close, likes to hide in his hoodies and burrow against his neck. It's shy, but warm. Comforting when his dad is screaming at him and his mom just tells him to do better.
He tries to act casual when he walks into school with Sunshine floating over his shoulder for the first time, but he really can't help bragging to his friends. Cause not everyone gets a lumen, but he had one. he had a soulmate out there somewhere, waiting for him.
And he really hoped it was Maria. That pretty girl he's been crushing on since he was 12. She hadn't gotten her lumen yet, so there was no way to know for sure until then. But he prayed every night, mused to Sunshine about it all the time.
Though the way Sunshine shied away from Maria, hung possessively around Rhett's face so she couldn't see him, should have been hint enough that it wasn't her.
Then, at midnight, October 17th, Tess is too anxious to stay in her room. She's wandered out into the horse barn. Giving her horse Peaches a midnight snack. Part of her hoped she didn't get one so no one would stare at her when she walked into school the next day.
But of course, a little ball of blue light - bright and clear as the sky - floated in through the crack in the barn door.
It went to her immediately, nuzzled against her belly to make her laugh and slid up onto Peaches' back like it wanted to go for a ride.
She calls her Lumen Cowboy.
That night, she confesses that she's scared of whoever they are a piece of. Scared they won't like her. Scared they'll want to be with someone else. Scared she won't like them either, that it might not be that Abbott boy she passes in the halls that's so cute she feels her blush in her ears.
But Cowboy, without words, is reassuring. Sets itself down beside her on her pillow all night while she tries to sleep.
She walks into school the next day with Cowboy confidently floating above her head. Clearing the way for her almost. Her friends are excited for her, and that helps her feel excited too. And she goes to her first-period class without any disruptions or hiccups. So she assumes that her soulmate isn't anyone she goes to school with. It's a small school, if they were there, Cowboy would have floated off to go find them by now.
But here's the thing.....
Rhett Abbott is running late to school
His chores weren't done and he wasn't going until they were.
So he pulls up about halfway through first period, runs to class and slips into his seat, luckily without his english teacher yelling at him.
But to add on to an already pretty shit morning, Sunshine just floats right back out the door.
"Uh, Mrs. Cooper? Someone's Lumen just went out into the hall?"
Everyone who has one looks up to see if theirs is gone, and Rhett feels the heat drain from his face when he realizes Sunshine is gone. He apologizes but shoots out of his desk like it's on fire. Mostly, he's just embarrassed and thinks Sunshine is wandering off. In the few months it's been there, it has wandered away to show him a cool sight a few times. Something he normally wouldn't even notice. And he thinks that is what is happening now.
AND THEN, just down the hall, Tess watches with wide eyes as Cowboy leaves the place where it was nestled in her sweatshirt pocket - only to go straight out the door. Mr. Snyder lets her go after it after a little begging.
And as soon as they're both out in the hall, calling in hushed whispers for their lumens to come back, their lumens start to glow.
Tess locks eyes with Rhett standing at the other end of the hall with wide eyes. Then their lumens meet in the middle and it feels like an explosion went off.
Everyone starts peeking out from their respective classrooms to see what was going on, and immediately people start talking among themselves.
"Rhett Abbott and Tess Abernathy! They're soulmates! Their Lumens just went off!"
And...Rhett is sixteen so please cut him some slack for this. But he looks disappointed. He's young, he thinks he's in love, he got his hopes up.
But man does that look just crush something inside Tess. Immediately she's got tears running down her face and she's so fucking embarrassed cause it's embarrassing enough being 16 but now everyone is looking at her and everyone knows what just happened and her LITERAL SOULMATE is disappointed that it's her and not someone else. Her nightmare come to reality.
So she runs off. She claps a hand over her mouth to keep in a sob and she runs. No destination in mind. But she bursts through the front doors with Cowboy trailing behind her and she just keeps going.

A Lengthy Infodump About Nin
Sword-wielding mageborn, elvish nobility, professional himbo.
My PC in my friend's Drakkenheim campaign!
[Spoilers to my fellow players]
Tumblr media
In the year 1057, elvish Duke of the Brachenwald Voren Aresen and his wife Marethari were blessed with their third child. At birth, their youngest was their daughter, but twenty years later he became their son, and was given the name Kerym.
Family Affairs
Although the Aresen family rules over eastern Westemar's Brachenwald, residing in a stately keep in the city of Stolzenfels, they were initially Caspian nobility- having moved countries in an attempt at higher status and a bigger political foothold nearly a century ago. Voren and his two eldest daughters, Melana and Saphielle, are Caspian by birth, while Marethari and their son Kerym were born in Westemar, but all of them were granted the title of Knights of Caspia in order for them to maintain status in their homeland.
In a sea of humans, a family comprising entirely of sun elves is incredibly rare among the noble ranks- however, the Aresen family's reputation far exceeds the novelty of their race. At social events, it's hard to find a better-dressed group; displaying the newest fashion and signs of their prospering wealth to their affluent company. Voren's three children especially are known for being head-turningly beautiful, something that especially Melana, the eldest child, uses to her advantage.
They are also known for their cutthroat business practices and underhanded methods, keeping competitors at bay and secrets under lock and key.
While Melana was raised as the heiress to the duchy of the Brachenwald and Saphielle aggressively studied to someday take her place, Kerym was never considered for any leadership roles in his family's affairs. While his sisters may eventually take their father's place, Kerym's purpose to the family was different.
Despite his introverted nature, he was trained to charm and entertain others of political worth, with the express intention to have him marry someone with a higher-ranking noble title for his family's benefit. Although he may not notice it, he has a tendency to slip into those trained behaviors when he interacts with charming strangers or respected figures.
The Mageborn Issue
In 743, the Edicts of Lumen were established in order to protect mages from being hunted by the Knights of the Silver Order, and to keep mageborn from positions of power to avoid any chance at another era of Sorcerer Kings. These laws were established when Voren, eldest son of the Caspian Aresen family and then-future family head, was 26 years old.
Begrudgingly, Voren and his family were forced to hide their innate magical natures from the world, lest their noble title be stripped and their legacy destroyed. Still, he actively sought a mageborn wife and, during their adolescence, his three children revealed to be mageborn as well.
Kerym, like his sisters, was thoroughly educated on matters of the arcane, and began his training as a secret mage. However, as the years progressed, magical flukes during his spellcasting started to become more commonplace and destructive. By the time he was halfway through his first century, surges of wild magic during spellcasting were guaranteed, and he was barred from continuing his arcane studies.
His magical instability didn't stop there- as he grew older, bouts of strong emotion would trigger the wild magic within him, even without evoking a spell, causing his parents to restrict his public appearances, and hire clerics to follow him during social events he couldn't avoid in case a Calm Emotions spell needed to be cast.
Octarine Dreams
In early autumn of 1110, Kerym started having a reoccuring dream: he was at a ball in Castle Drakken in the city of Drakkenheim- a situation he'd experienced twice before. He'd left the chattering ballroom to get some fresh air on the balcony, only to see the sky grow dark and hear screams from the city down below. Kerym turned around to face the ballroom, only to find that it was entirely empty. Candles unlit.
Most nights, his dreams ended there, leaving him with a building sense of dread that followed him for an entire year. Then one night, on the 15th of September, 1111, his dream had a different conclusion.
Kerym was on the balcony, scared and alone, and turned to face the city once again. Suddenly, everything was enveloped in a vibrant purple glow as a meteor came crashing through the sky and destroyed the city below.
Waking up in a panic, Kerym demanded to speak with his father to explain- possibly warn him of the events of his terrifying dream. Voren didn't believe him, stating that Kerym was making a fool of himself.
The following week, news spread through Westemar of the meteor that fell from the sky and hit Drakkenheim in the evening of the 16th of September.
Journey to Drakkenheim
Several years after the Westemarian civil war, Kerym's magical instability had worsened to the point that he was forced to stay within the family keep. Even if he didn't have close friends among the local nobility, the isolation was wearing on him, kept only partially in check by his trusted swordfighting tutor, former Knight Captain Roderik Luceran.
During that time, Voren began showing interest in the mysterious crystals known as delirium that now covers large swaths of the destroyed Drakkenheim. It was theorized that, with the help of these potently magical crystals, they could find a way to cure Kerym's wild magic.
Initially, they had planned to send hired mercenaries to retrieve samples of delirium for experimentation, but Kerym, eager to go out and feeling a pull to the city due to his dreams, offered to lead the expedition himself.
Kerym left Stolzenfels with two dozen mercenaries, all sworn to secrecy. During this time, he learned about the life of a commoner, often being dragged into drinking stupidly strong liquors and easily falling for common pranks done by his traveling companions. It was also during this time that Kerym decided to call himself Nin, the elvish word for 'voice', in order to keep his identity and status a secret.
Despite being away from his family home, his surges were still a consistent and increasingly dangerous problem. As if the Westemarian wildlife and bandits weren't lethal enough, Nin's magical outbursts killed several mercenaries, leaving him with only two companions by the time he reached Emberwood Village- the last populated settlement near the contaminated ruins of Drakkenheim.

Additional Lore
Here's some other details on Nin that I couldn't find a place for in the big summary!
Nin is 69 years old, turning 70 on May 29th. He is a Gemini.
His full name and title is Sir Lord Kerym Leoric Fen'Soveliss Aresen.
Everyone in the Aresen family has traditional sun elvish tattoos, which are burned into the skin with a form of scarification and ink. They depict the family's history, as well as the individual's personal achievements.
Nin loves sparring, and has sparred with many nobles in the past. His second eldest sister, Saphielle, occasionally sparred with him when she visited their family keep, but he's never been able to beat her.
He's capable of fighting with most weapons, but prefers a two-handed sword, common among protectors.
Nin is bisexual, and is under the assumption that most people are as well.
Nin doesn't know how to whistle.
You can tell Nin is using his magical abilities when purple electricity crawls up his skin. It increases in speed and ferocity when he's about to surge.
Nin is a terrible liar.
Although Nin has little to no insecurities regarding his appearance, he's extremely insecure about his wild magic, and is of the belief that his existence is some kind of divine punishment for his father's hidden crimes.
Nin, like everyone else in his family, has very long hair due to family tradition. Although he'd never consider cutting it because of this, he wouldn't deny that having to brush and braid it every day is a chore.
His favorite drink to order at a tavern is mead, and he's weak for a good charcuterie board.

For the ttrpg question thingy: perseus and 20, 22, 28, 49, 69
(there were a lot of questions and these were random except for 20......👀.....ans 69 cus its 69) >:3
long post beneath the cut because i love talking and thinking about perseus rook
20. what attracts them to someone—platonically and/or romantically, anything counts.
Platonically, Perseus is pushed towards most people. He typically wouldn't mistrust somebody immediately (besides a Caedis worshipper or something) and is happy to be friends or allies with anyone. However, he especially likes people he can play chess with and are willing to listen to what he has to say, even if it's dumb. It takes a little time for him to warm up and fully trust people but once he does, he is ride or die.
For romance, I didn't initially have a type in mind but it accidentally happened throughout the campaign. Therefore romantically, Perseus' type is chaotic, carefree and probably doomed for tragedy.
22. how would they decorate their living space, if they had a chance?
THIS is so interesting because, at the start of the campaign, Perseus' only home had been the one with his family. He wanted to earn money so they could live peacefully in a nice house without any obligations to the Templars for him or the Arcane University for his brother.
He'd probably start off by decorating things rather sparsely since at the beginning he'd probably go back to his mindset of "buy only what's necessary". However, once he got over that, he'd probably buy anything that made him happy or that he liked the look of. Very cluttered and probably plenty of warm and bright colours. Almost certainly he'd have a nice kitchen and in the back a shrine to Lumen.
28. do they collect anything?
Nope, mainly because while playing him he was firmly in the previously mentioned "buy only what's necessary". I feel maybe in the future, he'd like to collect weapons (mainly swords and firearms).
49. how often do they cut their hair, if at all?
Perseus is a sloppy lad. He used to only cut his hair if someone else tells him to do it or if it got too long. At the end of the campaign, he started to care more for his appearance but I feel like he'd keep it longer still. Before he would just lop chunks off with any blade he found around. He'd probably find visits to the barbershop either incredibly uncomfortable or very soothing.
69. what’s one secret they don’t want getting out?
That for a moment when he found out that Pyker killed his father (while mind-controlled), he genuinely considered killing him in return. Instead, he shut that urge down and instead chose to forgive him on the spot, knowing that the bard already felt like he'd fucked up enough.
There's also the poorly-hidden feelings he had for Pyker (and the confusion around Zeitgeist after their threesome). He doesn't want anyone to know but he knows that actions speak louder than words especially when you sell your soul for the guy.

I was tagged by @sadbreadcrumb to show up 5 songs I'm currently into. So.
1.
This one and all the album. It kinda awakes my fear of missing out: my life is like a Flëur song and I want it to be a Polkadot Cadaver song. I put it on Tinder with some photos to find smb ready to share the mood AND TINDER BLOCKED ME FOR GOOD.
I don't mind waiting for you
There's blood on the dance floor, oh no, what now you gonna do
I don't mind lying for you
About the bodies in the backyard
...
2.
I started to listen in after watching Arcane. Aw, those sad little Powder vibes it gives me. Dunno.
Spiders in your favorite shoes
Just leave them be cause they're more scared of you
3.
Unta onko tää, vai kuolema jossa palata sinne saan missä hiillos jo luovuttaa lumen alla kun astun maailmaan
Erämaan aikaan
Ensilumi satoi kahdesti
Maalasi sieluni taulun
4. I posted War Painted Valentine already, so
It's just my favorite song ever. I have some FEELINGS so I don't know what to write.
What was once a delusion
Now when it has begun
Still they claim the illusion
Blame us for what they've done
Follow those whose hearts are adoring
Through the streets in gathered might
Arm in arm we sing eternally
Long ago (from the crimson lights of the morning)
When all the fallen tears were given wings
(To the darkest depths of night)
With a song (marching on towards uncertainty)
And all the within our hearts
5. SORRY NOT SORRY. EARWORM WARNING.
It's an indestructible, irresistible earworm I just cannot unhear. I mean it, I listened it once and I still cannot escape. X)
Ukrainian version IS NEEDED.
I've gone all political by the end, although 1 was very personal. That's why I must attach a bonus bc I can't stay 100% serious. ALSO AN EARWORM KORVAMATO УШНОЙ ЧЕРВЬ
Tumblr media
I don't have much people to tag here. So if you see this and want to do ur 5 finest - do it.

Firelight pt. 2
Let's go, part 2! How long will this be? I dunno...long enough lol It's fun to write I ain't gonna lie.
The lumen au is thanks to @meliapis and I used some of @vastaya-simp 's head canons for Scar's lumen. It's very cute and I am so soft for it.
Pairing: Scar x gn!AFAB Reader (no specific pronouns used for reader)
SFW, some cursing and probably full of mistakes because I usually write while sleep deprived lol
Listened to BABYDOLL by Ari Abdul on repeat while writing this
Part 2 of ??
///You///
Being held by your soul mate, who's face you had not even seen yet, while flying on a hover board to some unknown location was the most overwhelming and possibly scariest thing you had ever experienced. It also didn't help that he was super tall and his arms were about the same circumference of your head. And the claws were digging into your thigh.
Other than picking you up, he hadn't said anything or even checked on you to see if you were okay. This was so strange. Was he angry about this? What was going on?
Your little friend was snug against your neck, feeling your fear and anxiety, trying to calm you. Your hands wrapped around it gently and you pressed your cheek to it. Why did it have to happen like this?
What was going to happen now? The leader seemed to be the owl masked one, but they didn't offer any answers whenever you asked. Just that you couldn't see where they were going and that if you didn't fight back, everything would be fine.
All you knew is that you were flying and the next, the momentum stopped and you were set down, but a large hand stayed on your shoulder, guiding you. By the sounds, you were walking down a large pipe and the sounds of the other's footsteps behind you ricocheted off the walls.
You reached up and felt the hand that was on your shoulder and you concluded that it was indeed your soul mate. The sharp nails gave it away, but when you touched his hand, his fingers twitched, like he wanted to take your hand or something.
When you felt the hand leave your shoulder, you felt around but no one was around you. A metallic grinding noise stopped you, along with some deep grunting. Something was opening.
///Scar///
Holding you close to him, even as frightened as you were, made his heart just roar in his chest. He kept reminding himself to not hold you too tightly or to watch the claws. Having you so close to him made him feel warm.
Your lumen, however, was dimmer than usual and didn't even try to leave his collar this time. It was very unhappy and by the looks of it, so were you.
He did feel relief when he set you down, only because if he held you any longer, he was going to combust. You set him on fire whenever you wrapped your arms around his neck, your grip tightening when he went faster of banked around something.
He couldn't believe you were finally here, with him.
Instead of letting you stumble around in the dark, he placed his hand on your shoulder and guided you. Your hand reached up and felt over his with feather light touches and he clenched his teeth as he held back the urge to take your hand. Last thing he wanted to do was scare you off.
He had to open the door, since he was the only one strong enough, and his hand left you. Again, it made his heart jump when you felt around for him.
One of his comrades to you to walk forward as he pushed the metal door out of the way and it was cute how you held your hands out to make sure you weren't going to bump into anything.
In this light, he could see the true color of your hair, how red and swollen your bottom lip was from biting it nervously. That one made him feel certain feelings...
///You///
"Just walk forward. You won't run into anything." Someone said behind you and your head turned towards the voice.
Doing as instructed, hands out in front of you to make sure you actually didn't run into anything. The air was...cleaner? You could hear lots of whirling, the same kind the hover boards made, and children laughing. Someone took your arm and stopped you, the metallic sound and grunting resuming behind you.
The lumen seemed annoyed by someone taking your arm and left it's spot to run down your arm, bumping into the hand on you.
"Alright, Janna. Possessive."
Well, yeah. It had been you and the lumen for many years. It never liked people touching you. It pouted when you hugged your friends, even though you'd cuddle it right after.
Then you were being led up somewhere. Going up stairs blind folded was jarring, but some how you managed it with only hitting your shin twice.
You heard a door open and then the large hand returned to your shoulder and led you to what you assumed was a chair and was happy to find that it was, indeed, one. With out being told, you sat down and wrung your hands nervously. You had to get out of the city before your client found out you had been caught.
"Give me your wrists." Someone said.
"What?" You almost jumped out of the chair, but the hand on your shoulder kept you down. "I followed your rules!"
"This is for everyone's safety. Either give me your wrists or we will do it for you."
You couldn't believe how stupid you were. You had followed them right into their den and now you were at their mercy. But you wanted to meet your soul mate, so you could look him in the eye and tell him he was an asshole for doing this to you.
Sighing, you held out your wrists and gently they were put behind your back and chained. This day was getting worse and worse.
"Whoa! Hey!" Someone stumbled. "Man, this thing really hates people getting close." The lumen must've been acting up.
"Yeah, maybe because you're chaining me up?" You shrugged and hit the floor with your foot. "Are you gonna keep me blind folded?"
That prompted someone to take the blind fold off and you blinked at the sudden light, your eyes stinging. It wasn't even that bright in the room you were in, but everything had been pitch black under the blind fold.
In front of you was a boy in the same jacket that the owl masked one had been wearing. On his face was a painting of an hour glass and though he had a mean face on, you could tell he was just as confused as you were. Beside him was the tall man, mask still on, just looming there. You inhaled, annoyed.
The lumen hid in your hair, but the light was simmering, like it was angry.
The boy walked forward and held up the package. "You know what was in here?"
Ah, yeah, they wanted to interrogate you. "No, I would be very bad at my job if I did." They set the tone, so you would meet it. This was all bullshit.
"You don't even check to see what you're running with?" The boy asked incredulously, a brow raising and eyes narrowing. "So you don't care that you're moving shimmer around?"
You pursed your lips. "I mean, I guess? I don't do it on purpose but I don't go hungry any more. What's the sating? Ignorance is bliss?" That wasn't really true. Shimmer stole so much from you, you hated it. Spreading it wasn't your intention.
The boy scoffed and opened the package, revealing the vials of shimmer. "That's disappointing to hear." And you could see that he was genuinely disappointed. Your soul mate also let out an unpleased growl.
"Well, so is finding your soul mate in a dark ass tunnel and then being forced somewhere, blind folded, and tied to a chair. We can't all win." You leaned back and crossed your legs, giving the said soul mate a short glare.
Still, it ate at you that your soul mate was upset with this information. Even if you were angry with him, it just didn't sit right. "Look-" You tilted your head back. "I didn't know I was moving it. I don't look because if I did, it would endanger my life even more than getting caught." You set your leg down and leaned forward. "If I knew what was in there, I would have smashed it. But part of my job is not knowing what I have, because that is not my business."
"It makes you an accomplice. Willingly or not." The boy snapped, his brows knitted together. "Another cog in the machine that is poisoning people."
He was right, most definitely, but he also was forgetting that for people like you, there were limited options. "Yeah, well, I didn't want to end up in a brothel, working directly for the chembarons, or manufacturing the shit. Those were my options verses starving in the streets." The lumen left your hair and again pressed against your cheek, trying to comfort you.
The boy looked at your soul mate, his face still hard, but his eyes had softened. "We all have choices." The boy put the vial back.
"Yeah? Well, what now? I'm never getting another job and if I stay here in Zaun I am dead." You shrugged. "Either way, I can't stay."
That caught the attention of your soul mate and your lumen left his collar, tucking itself under his chin. You looked away. You could feel the warmth of him, the safety, even though you personally, did not feel very safe in the moment.
"You'd leave?" The smaller boy asked. "You found your soul mate and you'd leave?"
You slumped in the chair, looking at the floor. It wasn't what you wanted, but you weren't ready to die. "It's that or be killed. So, what is your choice, little man?" He seemed almost put off that you called him that. "My life is now in your hands."
///Scar///
Yeah, pissed was an understatement about how he felt, but when you brought up the brothels, it just made him angrier. Imagining you there made his blood boil. Still, to think that you would move shimmer around and be so nonchalant about it angered him. Did you not understand what it had done to this city? To top it off, you were angry at him.
"My life is now in your hands." That hit him so deeply. So your options were to leave, leave him, or face the wrath of those you had failed? To him that was unacceptable. He looked at Ekko, wondering what he would do next, because Scar had decided he was not going to let you walk out that door to your death just because he had caught you.
"Well, lucky for you, no one but a select few know of this place and you have a set of skills that are very useful." Ekko crossed his arms. "I am sure by now you can guess who we are."
Your knee bounced, lips still pursed. "Yeah, I've heard in passing. Some vigilante group?"
"Close, but not exactly." Ekko shrugged and Scar walked behind him, keeping his eyes on you. He could feel the warmth of your cheek when his lumen pressed against it. The way you nuzzled it...
Yours however, would not leave his neck, as if clinging to him in desperation. It made sense, you were in a bad position right now. Scar felt guilt and anger at himself. Did he really have to catch you? Yes, you had shimmer. He couldn't let that spread to other places, to ruin more lives. But why was it him and not one of the others?
"We are trying to stop the hurt Silco is causing. Aiding those who are and were his victims. Hence-" Ekko held up the package. "Stopping you today."
You didn't say anything but he could tell you were thinking. Ekko must've noticed it too. "We'll unchain you, but until we know who's side you're on, it's best if you stay in this room."
"I don't even know who you are." You said as Scar went to undo your chains.
Ekko watched as you rubbed your wrists as soon as they were free. "Ekko." He nodded towards Scar, who moved back to his side, looking down at you through the mask. He was almost afraid to take it off. What would you think of him? "And this giant is Scar. Or lover boy." Ekko quipped at him and Scar grunted, hitting him with his elbow.
"You can't even tell me your own name?" You were so mad at him, at this whole situation. He was too but for different reasons. "So do you not want me to see your face? What is your problem?"
Ekko looked up at him and shrugged. Scar knew he agreed with them. "To be fair, we don't know your name either."
Your lips pressed together tightly and your eyes bore into him. He wasn't getting your name until he at least looked you in the eyes. Fair enough.
Reaching up, he undid the clasp of his mask and slowly took it off, letting it hang from his hand at his side. Now you could see him.
///You///
What you expected, you didn't know, but a fierce looking chirean was nothing you ever imagined. The ears on his lumen now made sense. His green eyes just stared into you, as if he could see everything about you, laid bare before him. You could see his hands flexing open and shut, revealing that he too, was nervous.
And... he was beautiful. You weren't even angry anymore.
Ekko cleared his throat and you turned bright red. You had been staring with your mouth open. You wish you could evaporate. "So, your name?"
"(Y/N)." You muttered, Scar's lumen fluttering down to your hands, tucking itself into your palms.
"Think on it. You can stay here for the night." Ekko gave Scar a look before walking out the door, leaving the two of you alone.
Your eyes skimmed the floor towards his direction and you could feel his eyes on you. Those very intense eyes.
He walked towards you and you looked up to see him staring down at you, eyes flickering over your face and briefly meeting your eyes.
It didn't last long though before he broke the eye contact while Scar rubbed his neck and also left, but not before looking back at you with confusion. He wasn't the only one confused.

Lumen just stares at Nikolai's new bird before the angel himself catches their attention. There's something off about that bird, something familiar that makes their missing eye ache ever so slightly. ...But they have a question to ask. For Auretta's sake more than anything.
"...If, for any reason, I needed to use a summoning circle...." Their ears lay flat at the possibility, however slight, that Lucifer would just ignore them anyway. "Could I do it here? I tried outside, but... I suppose the cold interfered."
...The cold is a horrible excuse, yet it's easier than saying that they could barely stand being outside, easier than admitting that they're not well enough to even leave the building.
Tumblr media
Nikolai had just picked up his silly bird when Lumen spoke, a confused look coming to his face at such an... Odd query.
"Summoning... Circle?"
Weren't those used in Arcane arts? For what reason would Lumen need to use one? Unless that was also a false tale told to him in his youth. How curious...
"You don't have to hide things from me Lumen. I know you went out and fell asleep by my flowers~ Hedera tells me everything."
Of course he knew Lumen didn't 'fall asleep' but he wasn't about to start teasing them for trying so hard and failing at something. Such a thing would even wound him. So he shakes his head then cups his chin thoughtfully. Would it be safe to use such a thing in his abode? The sanctuary would probably be the safest because he had total control down there...
"I-- don't see why not. Do you need anything from me to do it?"

Even Though Her Hands Were Already Full, She Could Still Carry A Grudge
Say another cross word and watch me fold like laundry Engaging in behavior that can only be described as tawdry Twist the knife, a blade as short as the appreciation For all my wasted efforts, it's guilt by loose affiliation Self destruct is the only mode that holds any appeal For me, lay off the heat and allow me to congeal Or simply die in the gutter, at least we both win in this situation Perpetuating wrongheadedness, my ultimate goal is the continuation Of the hurt and anguish that has come to define me Doing nothing to break the cycle, pretending that I need you to remind me Of all the throwaway deeds in which I participated Overshadowing the negativity that precipitated My timely demise, for once I'm right on schedule Overdue for an impromptu meeting with the devil Hammering out a plan to fork over my soul Rewarded with eternal pain and a stocking full of coal Tell me I'm pouting but I (don't) know my worth Trying your best to get a handle on the girth Circumference becomes the bane of all existence Holding on out of spite, it's me and my persistence Versus you and all your fact-based evidence Showing up to a gunfight with a spoon and loads of hesitance Palpable as ever, so we'd do well to get to scooping Body language ratting me out once again, lips and eyes both drooping In anticipation of your rejection, treat me like a trick Or treat yourself to some self care by calling out sick Let my absence be your remedy, it'll cure what ails I'm nothing more than a stray dog at your door, so cut tails And dock ears, I won't want to hear your speech anyway A concerted effort to reach no one, a flash mob where many pray But nary a difference is made, soothe your own conscience Pull an all-nighter, prepping for tomorrow's conference Convoluted platitudes are once again all the rage Reading at a third grade level but you turned the page A little too quickly for my jaded sensibilities Casting shades of doubt on your tenuous credibility Shifting with the winds to keep up with your fluid impartiality A flimsy pretext for avoiding base carnality Turning up for the sake of self conscious ostentation Offending half the members of this dwindling congregation Pious and self involved just like any good human Measuring light output in terms of a personality instead of a lumen Realizing how long I've been withering in darkness alone Empathetic resolutions, hoping my sharpness atones For all the crispness I've lost over the years Fighting back an arcane urge to shed tears And my skin, it's one and the same from where I stand Telling myself I've found steady footing in the sand Throw shade at my legacy like yours depended on it Nothing chases satisfaction quite like your gin and tonic…

Angel's Jobs FF14 (To be revised)
Tumblr media
As a LumenSage , who fell into Eorzea by the grace of mother crystal, the jobs that Angel can perform as based solely on his existing skills prior to arriving to The Source. Machinist, Gunbreaker , Monk and Bard : Ranged attacks mixed with melee has always been Angel's preferred method of combat, a master marksman he can pick up most range fighting styles with relate ease  although Machinist is only on paper as rather than using the massive array of technology the Machinist has access too, Angel chooses to dual wild two massive guns. Monk allows Angel to communicate with his fist should diplomacy fail to get his point across, most problems int he world require you to hit them really hard. Bard, Angel being as previously mentioned a master marksman, can also sing being his training as a sage had him is what could very well be considered choir practice to wordship the god of his universe. Angel can sing and it powers up his allies. Paladin, is pretty self explanatory, holy knight, defensive abilities using light and sacred power, it was quite literally was job that's closest to what he is. White Mage and Sage : White magic, the arcane art of succor As a child angel was taught the ways of healing, and is pretty adept in his knowledge of medicinal herbs and different types of treatments for illnesses and other pains that could ail any individual. His training of this job was by hfar the hardest, given he had to learn how to read control and manifest aether and not being a native of eorzea or the world as a whole proved to be quite the difficult endeavor, not to mention the guildmasters where not very trusting given his otherworldly appearance. For white mage in particular the elements where trying to murder Angel at every chance they got, (ill let you guess why that was...) Dragoon and Samurai : The Lumen learn to use many different weapons, for Angel learning how to wield a sword and spear to slay his enemies was pretty easy. REAPER : A job born out of desperation, Angel was forced to take up the role of a Reaper, as a his first job when he fell into the world, almost near death he sought the void to protect himself.

Lumen Order - Hierarchy of Order
HIERARCHY
The Lumen Order has a fairly simple hierarchy, the process of ascending one’s rank is dependent on various factors. The first is merit, recommendations, and full support of the current leader. The simplest one is merit, any Lumen Order can ascend rank easily if they did their job, depending on certain cases, extraordinary merit can ascend a Lumen to a higher standing. Every Lumen Order headquarters has a specific member and all of them follow the hierarchy. The hierarchy is as follows:
Tumblr media
LUMEN: The highest power that any branch of The Lumen Order can offer. Their responsibilities are mostly off-field and always coordinate with any town or city official. Unlike the other positions, A Lumen cannot be simply ascended on one’s merit alone. There are certain factors that need to be met before a Lumen rank is to be given. A first factor is that a Lumen member must pass away. After that, there will be a meeting to be held among various Lumen heads from various branches. They will discuss certain candidates and each Lumen head will then vouch for that said candidate.
Once that is settled, the candidates will then introduce themselves to one of its founding members or one of its descendants and they will show their prowess in various fields. These fields consist of: Politics, Arcane Arts, Martial or Weapon mastery, and Situational Events. Once the necessary information has been met, the founder will choose the next Lumen and the role will be filled and assigned to a specific branch.
LIGHTKEEPER: Lightkeepers are considered the Left and Right hand of a Lumen Head. They mostly answer to a Lumen and prioritizes them above all else. Lightkeepers are usually assigned personally by a Lumen themselves and most likely trained by them. Although Lightkeepers are considered as the most skilled second to a Lumen, their roles are solely focused on being administrators. They handle any important paperwork and prepare any verification for the Lumen.
However, there comes a time when dire situations arise, Lightkeepers will often handle war table strategies and important missions that are to be handled alone. This is why it is important that Lightkeepers are often inside, because if anyone saw them outside and armed, you better run. For if there is a Lightkeeper, there is a darkness that not even Torches and Wicks can handle.
LIGHTBEARER: Lightbearers often handle fieldwork, training, and maintenance. They assign jobs, tasks, and deploy Lanterns wherever they are needed. Lightbearers are skilled individuals who can take on any Shedder even if they are in the deepest of darkness. Just as the name suggests, they bear a powerful light that can illuminate a Shedder territory. In a party of two Lantern squads, there will always be Lightbearer with them. They act as a beacon and provide information to a Lumen Order branch. But if they are not on-site, they act as mentors and provide necessities to other members. Most initiates believe that Lightbearers are the heart of any branch due to how helpful they are to the Wicks and Torches.
LANTERN: Lanterns tend to work best when they are outside. They handle any Shredder related activity in the area and handle any public disruption. Essentially Lanterns are one of the peacekeepers. Lanterns however do not work alone however, they work as a squad composed of Torches and Wicks. A Lantern can have a squad of three Torches and five Wicks. They’re responsible for the welfare of the squad and ensure that the Torches and Wicks are able to finish their task dutifully and swiftly.
TORCH: Torches are one of the ranks you usually see when you travel at night. They have enough combat talent to combat low ranking to medium ranking Shedders. They are comparable to guards and are mostly stationed to watchtowers on every road.
WICK: Wicks are a term referring to initiates, they have some combat experience to low ranking Shedders and in higher numbers, they can take down a single medium ranking Shedder. While they do appear in patrols, Wicks are considered as trainees and they often trained in a Lumen Order headquarters. Wicks on patrols are often accompanied by Lanterns in a squad or a Torch if they travel by pair.

Anemone | Viktor x Magic! Reader (Part One)
Lumen AU credited to my wife: @meliapis
Summary: You are a magic user that grew up in the depths of Zaun, escaping through the only way you know how--the University. There, you hone your skills as a botanist and do your best to ignore the fear of finding your soulmate and that one day, your power will grow overwhelming and hurt not only you, but them.
T/W: Descriptions of death, nightmares, and paranoia.
A/N: Hi all! Thank you for being here--this is the first time I’ve written in a while so please be kind but special shout out to my Tumblr wife who inspired me to write for the first time in years and is ever the source of my inspiration. Please enjoy!
Part Two / Part Three / Masterlist
Anemone; a genus of the flowering plants in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Plants of the genus are commonly referred to as wildflowers. Meaning forsaken, sickness, anticipation, and undying love.
You see visions of blue, swirls of light emanating out from the darkness, sweetly calling to you like a siren. The anxiety ebbs at the edge of your visions when all of a sudden, a loud ringing grows even louder in the back of your mind, a gentle nudge startling you out of sleep. You had fallen asleep at your desk, again. Your eyes adjust to the bright sunlight and you slap your hand down on the alarm clock nearby when a brilliant golden ball comes into focus, floating two feet away–staring at you as if a ball of light could have eyes.
“I know, I know,” you mutter, reaching out and gently cupping it in your palm, bringing it over to the crook of your neck. “It won’t happen again.”
You feel another loving bash against the side of your neck and let out a small laugh.
“Okay, I’ll try not to let it happen again, but no promises,” you state and stand from your desk, stretching out your sore neck. You hear a few pops and groan at the sharp stabbing pain. The copper ball drifts over your shoulder to the back of your neck and rubs gently against you, warmth building against your skin. You let out a soft sigh as your muscles relax ever so slightly.
“--hurt your back,” you catch the tail end of his voice as the lumen settles in the hollow of your collar bone. Hearing the accented lilt come through, you smile and cup it in your hands, holding it close to your face. It shines brighter, like the most beautiful piece of polished metal, and fear creeps into your chest as you place a kiss on top and whisper to it.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” you place it back in its home on your left shoulder and begin to prepare for the day, walking through your bedroom to the kitchen. Your apartment looks like a forest, plants growing all around you from pots on the ground and hanging from above. It fills every inch and crevice with life, creating a chaotic mess of foliage all around you.
Finding a spare clean cup, you warm up some coffee at the stove and grab the watering can, beginning the long and arduous morning routine of watering your plants. As tedious as it proved to be, you relished in the simple activity like a reminder to yourself that you could do more harm than good.
Memories of the dream creep back into your mind. Ever since the use and production of Hextech had been kicked into high gear, the anxiety and fear began to weigh on your shoulders again. The haunting dreams of magic were coming back and you were paranoid at every corner that someone would come out and claim that you could use magic as some miracle of Piltover. But, that wasn’t it at all. You could barely use it, if anything it used you. After all these years, you had some sort of grasp over it–like a transference of energy but you still didn’t understand why only you had it and constantly sought out answers. One of the reasons you chose biology, actually, and yet to no avail.
You just remember the fear. The fear of your mother, and the fear in that man’s eyes when he tried to break into your small hovel in Zaun. He came in with a mask on and yelled at you to shove everything of importance into the bag, so you did. It was just when your hand touched his skin, he crumpled into ash as if you sucked the life out of him. The room glowed bright blue and the only thing you felt was energy, but the horror that filled your body outweighed any positive that you could have gained. Lines of blue potential thrummed through your veins as you stared in horror, crumpling into a ball on the floor. And when your mom came home, you were so scared it would happen to her too, that you would suck the life out of her like some monster, but she grasped you in her arms and whispered in your ear. That was the first and last time you took a life.
A weight fills your hand as you feel a pressure lifting up the front of the watering can, a bright light flickering as you laugh and pull it back. The poor plant in front of you had been drowning and the sweet little ball of light had stopped you from causing terror any longer.
“Sorry about that,” you remark and smile, watching it shimmer with light. It was getting so bright, and had been since the second you stepped onto the University campus. You knew he was here somewhere, and fear had stopped you from pursuing him any further. There was no question that you loved the person on the other side of that lumen, but it was a firm boundary you had placed in front of your heart. If you met your fated soul, you would serve as nothing but a danger to them and yourself. Sure, you could heal a cut by absorbing energy from a plant or a rat, but the man’s face remained in your mind and you couldn’t bear it being the face of your lover.
The shrill screech of the kettle shakes you out of your stupor once again and you brew some coffee, pouring it into your mug before leaving to change and get ready for the day. A pile of dirty clothing stacked high in the corner stared back at you and you sighed, pulling on the only clean clothing you owned and throwing a lab coat on top of it.
“What do you think?” you ask the ball of light that swiftly swirls around your body as you stare into the mirror. “I’ll take that as good.”
Grabbing your bag and slinging it over your shoulder, your lumen floats back to its crevice by your collar bone as you grab your newly cooled coffee and head out the door for another day of staring at leaves through microscopes. It was more exciting than it sounded, or at least that’s what you told yourself.
-
The greenhouse beside your lab warms the interior as you gaze down into the microscope beneath you, observing the cell walls of this conifer tree that grew in a different region than in Piltover. You can see the way that the plant’s cells grew closer together rather than spaced loosely apart and hypothesize that it was because of the climate. Turning to the side, you make a note to ask for more samples.
Taking a moment, you lean back and stretch your spine from the hunched over position where you loomed over the microscopes. You should invest in a stool rather than the chair, but there’s never any room in the budget to buy a stool because you’d much rather buy more plants or get a new small greenhouse to test different soil samples or even get an invasive species to see how they would react with the native plants of Piltover to ensure that you could identify them when the time came.
You look down at the little ball hanging out on your shoulder, turning a bit dark golden at the edges out of irritation.
“What’s wrong, hm?” you ask and cup him in your hand, bringing him up to your face. He gently rubs against your cheek and it feels like a caress as you smile and place a kiss atop the ball before placing him back down by your shoulder, the color brightening. And for a second, you think it is because he’s pleased with you, but the radiance only grows, as does the fear building in your chest.
Your mind is swirling deep in thought when a knock rings out from the wooden doors, startling you and making you jump slightly.
“Who is it?” you ask, looking down at the frumpy clothing you threw on this morning. You don’t remember any scheduled guests and you can only stare at the bright little lumen on your shoulder.
“It’s Viktor, I’m with Hextech. Jayce and I wanted to borrow some plants to experiment with,” your heart skips a beat when you hear the familiar accented voice and you feel your throat begin to close out of panic. You remember this meeting, yes, you had tabled it somewhere and wrote it down on a piece of paper when Jayce initially approached you about it but all you could think about was the person on the other side of that door.
“Come in!” you squeak out and watch the door swing open to reveal a man. You never once were able to conjure the perfect picture of what your fated partner would look like, perhaps out of fear or simply because you knew they would always be perfect in your eyes, but this felt different. He was lithe and tall, and when you look up to his eyes–you know for a fact that you’re a goner. The golden of your–his lumen stares back at you.
The bright blue lumen at the base of his neck almost tries to burrow deeper into his vest and you know that the fear is eating away at you. You shine so brightly and you can see from the corner of your eye that his is too.
“Are you?” he asks and you slowly nod, your chest tightening as you struggle to breathe. Your lumen burrows even deeper behind his layers of clothing and you shake your head, grabbing his lumen that threatens to fly towards yours.
“I’m sorry, I can’t–” you mutter and turn, running into the greenhouses that appear to be endless with rows and rows of perfectly grown foliage. You slam back into the wall and slide down, sitting in the dirt as warm tears roll down your cheeks. You try to hold Viktor’s lumen close, to comfort yourself but he flies away from you hovering a few feet away. He’s hurt, you can tell, his usual bright luminous gold dulled down to a dark yellowish-brown.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper and close your eyes, wrapping your arms tightly around yourself as you shake with sobs. For a moment, it feels like the world crumbles around you. Your chest heaves as you struggle to breathe through the panic and pain. Visions of that man’s face, the nameless man that haunts your dreams every night, appear in your mind as your throat tightens, choking on the thick tears. He’s dead. He’s dead because of you, and if Viktor stays with you, it will happen to him too. No one ever stayed.
You can hear the swift sound of his lumen flying through the air away from you, making your chest physically hurt. It’s painful like your heart is breaking, that his lumen doesn’t even want to be with you anymore, but you hear a gentle crunching of a crutch in the soil and look up to see him walking toward you.
His lumen flies through the air toward yours and stops right in front of yours as Viktor hesitantly approaches you. The two of you are silent for a moment before he speaks.
“You know, it’s hard to chase after you in the dirt with a crutch,” he mutters and cracks a smile as you peek through your arms up at him. Nervously, you let out a laugh and rub furiously at your face, drying your face to try and look presentable.
“I’m sorry,” you mumble, watching as he places his crutch down on the ground, leaning over to sit next to you in the dirt. His lumen floats close to the two of you, just hovering carefully as yours peers out from Viktor’s vest wearily.
“Don’t be sorry, you didn’t do anything,” he states and looks out at the greenery surrounding the two of you. You’re quiet for a moment as the two of you sit, looking out at the greenhouse, the light of the sun peering in and warming the air around you.
“You did all this?” he asks and looks back at you, startling you slightly. It takes a moment for the question to sink in, but you quickly nod and look out at the plants, suddenly conscious of the fact that he’s staring at your life’s work. It’s everything you’ve made and put together and the strings of thought quickly begin to merge back together.
“Yes, I grew all of it,” you begin to explain and feel him staring at you, your cheeks flushing with warmth. “I didn’t put it all together by myself, of course, but I planted all of them and cataloged all of them. Some of them are new, actually, thanks to you–”
“It’s beautiful, I’ve never seen so many plants,” he comments and you smile, reaching out to gently rub at a leaf. “And the air is so fresh in here, even fresher than outside with all of the filters and such.”
“Yes, well, it’s the oxygen from the plants. It’s so pure. It’s how I kept my home in the Undercity pretty regulated. I’d like to think my mom’s life was prolonged because of me,” your smile drops a little at the mention of your mom and you think back to her passing when you were away at University and got the letter. You rushed off in the middle of the night to go help her and she refused your aid, stating that it was her time to go.
“I’m sorry for your loss,” you look back at him, your eyes tracing the curve of his face and the way his hair falls in gentle curls. He is so beautiful, his eyes shining bright like polished metal. You didn’t want to mess it up, mess him up. He was perfect and you would only tarnish the bright gold that he was.
“It was a while ago,” you mumble and stare down at your hands.
“Why did you run away from me?” he asks and you swallow nervously, it getting caught in your throat like a knot. “I promise, I’m not frightening, I can barely throw a punch.”
Another laugh bubbles up and you shake your head.
“I was–am scared. I don’t want to hurt you. I’ve never been good at relationships,” you explain and look over, hoping that he understands. Your dreams from last night creep back up into your head as you try to stomp them down. You want this to work out, you need it to.
He turns back to look at the plants once again and you notice the mole that adorns his skin, just above his lip.
“I don’t think you will hurt me,” he speaks and reaches his hand up to gesture to the plants. “You made all this, and it’s beautiful and alive.  I don’t think you could do anything to hurt me.”
You follow his hand out to stare at the forest of foliage you had grown, each individually and carefully planted with love and for a second, you believe him. This was your garden, your kingdom of greenery in which you ruled. And he sees that, he sees you, just as fractured and imperfect as the details of the leaves you grow. A twinkle of light catches in the corner of your eye as a bright beam of light shines the second your lumen finally takes a chance to venture out of his vest. It brushes his and the light blinds you again, finally solidifying your connection. Your heart warms in your chest as you suspend your beliefs. Choosing, if even for a moment, to enjoy this attachment.
Your head drifts to his shoulder as you begin to tell him about the plants, mind drifting to the task he had approached you with. You think about giving him a monstera to work with as it’s a relatively easy plant to take care of and are tolerant of irregular watering, not needing constant sunlight. He listens and hums in agreement as you suddenly realize you’ve been holding him from getting back to his lab.
“I’m so sorry,” you jump up and nervously look down at him. “You’re probably busy, I can grab you a plant, I just have to pot it–”
You look around for a spare set of gloves and a shovel, you know you have some somewhere. They always went missing, this place was a labyrinth.
“Don’t worry about it, Jayce probably thinks I need a break anyways,” he states and grabs his crutch, pushing himself off the ground with it. You look up when he stands, seeing how tall he is in comparison to you. “Have you eaten yet?”
“Today? No,” you check your watch and realize it is already midafternoon as the hunger pangs settle in your stomach.
“I meant lunch, but now we have to go,” he states as the two of you begin to walk down the pathway,
“You don’t have to, I feel bad–”
“Do not worry, Hextech has proven quite profitable,” he smiles and you roll your eyes, shaking your head.
“I think I remember reading somewhere that you weren’t in it for the money,” you state and hold open the glass door for him, rubbing the bottom of your feet on the mat to remove any dirt.
“It’s a perk,” he shrugs as he suddenly turns to cough, one turning into two and then a string violently shaking his chest. You place your hand on his shoulder, feeling the familiar push through your veins as energy transfers from you to him. His coughs slow and you sigh, thankful for the coffee that morning as fatigue begins to hit you.
“Are you okay?” you mumble and muster up a smile, even though you feel your body weigh heavily with exhaustion.
“I’m fine,” you scan over his face, and the hallows of his face seem to deepen a bit with solemnity. “Just a cough.”
You nod and feel the anxiety creep back, rubbing your hands together nervously.
“Why don’t you pick the place?” he proposes as you grab your bag, slinging it over your shoulder.
“There’s a cafe a block away that serves princess cakes,” you state, trying to lighten the mood.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a princess cake,” he tells you as you gasp dramatically, quickly explaining to him the wonders of a princess cake. There is an atmosphere lingering in the air, the fact that the conversation from before isn’t over, but it’s only midafternoon and you had time to leave for later. For now, you could just let it take root.
