LARKSPUR - Chapter One:  all that glitters ain't gold
“Colm, then?” asked Hosea, arms crossed across his chest. Arthur shook his head and took another pull from the bottle. “Girl's got her own demons chasin' her, by the looks of it,” “She ain’t an outlaw too, is she?” Another shake of his head, “Naw. This seems personal. Something about that ring of hers. Someone’s going through an awful lot of trouble to get it from her. They chased us out of Emerald Ranch,” Arthur explained, “She managed to divert him away from the camp while I rode on ahead with Karen, but by the time I doubled back...Well, let's just say she roughed him up good before puttin' the bastard down." “Tough girl,” Hosea mused. Arthur hummed in agreement. - When amateur outlaw and bounty hunter Ramona Kostka ends up on the wrong side of a robbery, she's swept into the world of the Van der Linde gang. A surprise reunion with an old friend deepens her involvement, forcing her to navigate alliances to clear the bounty on her head. As danger mounts, Ramona must outwit both friends and foes in a desperate bid to protect her freedom and her life.

shipuary 4 | emmaline nielson x arthur morgan
Masterlist : link
Summary : the worst thing about sharing a bed with a man who wakes up at the crack ass of dawn.
Warning : super fluffy, my apology for what I wrote for them last time, based around the time at Shady Bell! No spoilers
Tumblr media
One thing that everyone knows about Arthur is that he always wakes up with the sun. When the sun rises, no doubt Arthur Morgan would rise too. This becomes unfortunate for Emmaline when he invites her to share his bedroom at Shady Belle. Emmaline was a light sleeper, and has been since she was a little girl. The littlest movement or sound could wake her up. It was worse when she was getting used to sleeping outdoors, but eventually she got used to it. This was not the case when she moved into Arthur’s bedroom.
His cot was already very small and it was cramped to fit the two of them, but they were able to do it with Emmaline basically draped over Arthur. But he didn’t mind the pressure and just would pull her closer to him instead. Emmaline was pretty sure even if they got a bigger cot to fit them both, they would still cuddle up together like this.
Like every morning, she feels Arthur try and move out from under her as stealthy as he could. But the minute he moves her head off his chest is when her consciousness awakens. She opened her eyes groggily, it takes a second for her to register everything around her. She lifts her eyes to where Arthur was sitting on the cot, stretching his arms above his head as he tries to suppress a large yawn. He reaches for his boots but pauses as he feels a hand lazily grasp his wrist.
“Stay.”
Arthur turned his gaze to the half-asleep woman on his bed, a slight pout on her lips that was too adorable. “Darling, I got to get up. Got some jobs from Dutch.”
“Damn Dutch, stay with me.” Emmaline whines, pulling on his hand to join her back in bed. “It’s too early to do anything.”
“Don’t let Miss Grimshaw hear you say that.” The cowboy laughs, letting the woman tug on his arm.
“Don’t care what that old crone says.” Emmaline mumbles sleepily, but both knew that wasn’t true. Miss Grimshaw wasn’t a woman to cross or argue with. “Now c’mon, it’s barely early enough to do anything. Come back to bed.”
Arthur stared down at the woman, a glint in his eyes that Emmaline’s mind couldn’t place. But her eyelids were heavy and it was hard to keep them open long enough to focus on it. He smiled at her gently and toed off his boots again.
“I’d be a fool to deny the woman.”
The sleepy grin on her face brightened the old cowboy’s whole day. Emmaline adjusted herself so Arthur could slide back into bed next to her, facing her this time instead of laying on his bed. Emmaline immediately wrapped her arm around his waist and pressed close to her cowboy, humming in delight at his warmth enveloping around her.
“Good choice.”
Arthur let out a soft laugh and pressed a kiss to her forehead, placing his hand on her hip to pull her closer to him that every inch of their bodies were pressed up against each other. The scratch of his beard against her skin was a nice sting, she realized it was getting a bit long now. Maybe she’ll offer to shave it sometime.
Her thoughts drifted off as she felt him begin to press kisses down her face. From her forehead, eyebrows, under her eyes, and the tip of her nose. Her eyelids fell closed as she felt his breath brush against her lips, waiting for him to kiss her where she wanted it most. Frowning as he pressed a kiss to the corner of her mouth instead.
He laughed once more as he felt her frown. “You are too easy.”
“Kiss me, you idiot.”
He didn’t deny her and pressed his lips lazily against her own. The two share a kiss and many more in the privacy in his bedroom without any watching eyes that could interrupt the tranquil moment they have created together, other than the rising sun peeking in through the windows.
Every morning Arthur wakes Emmaline up, but if it always ended up like this, Emmaline doesn’t mind rising with the sun anymore.

Rabbit Heart - Chapter 13
Interlude I (Oh My Lovely)
“Well,” Arthur started, “no one’s born running.” He showed her how to reload, and then stepped back to let her try again. And again. And again. The bottles swung gaily, unbroken and unbothered while Rebecca continued to miss. At one point, Arthur asked her which one she was aiming for, and when she pointed at one hanging from the highest point of a long, tall branch, he laughed. “I believe that the safest place to be in a gunfight against you, Mrs. Bentham, would be directly in your eyeline.” She wished she could have a better temper about it, but her irritation rose with each shot that insisted on flying wide. She gripped the gun tighter. “And I believe if you were a better teacher, Mr. Morgan, my chances might be improved.” He chuckled. “You may have a point.” He crouched next to her and, after a pause, placed his hands on her shoulders. She was warm in a radiant way, as if she had gathered the noon sun and kept it just under her skin. Her hair tickled the back of his hand. He quietly resisted the urge brush it from her neck, refocusing himself. “Turn your body, like this.” She shivered and let him move her, trying to keep her mind straight down the barrel.

Chapter 1 - The Frost Gleams Where The Flowers Have Been
1890
Kate had never fancied herself a skilled woodworker. While she had lent a hand to her husband in constructing a barn, her role mostly entailed passing him tools and bringing him his lunch. But as she stood amidst the sawdust, tears streaking down her cheeks, she grappled with the daunting task ahead. She lacked both the sufficient wood and the patience to craft two coffins. Thus, the inevitable decision emerged: they would be laid to rest together.
The Reverend's suggestion to cremate the bodies, emphasizing the need to eradicate the disease completely, fell upon deaf ears. The mere thought of reducing her beloved husband and precious baby girl to ashes felt abhorrent to Kate. Instead, she harbored a tender hope that one day, perhaps, they would blossom into a magnificent Willow tree.
Amidst the melancholy chore, the vibrant symphony of birdsong provided a bittersweet backdrop, reminiscent of the lullabies she once crooned to her infant daughter. With a sorrowful melody humming in her heart, Kate toiled diligently, her hands blackened with grime, each wipe across her tear-stained cheeks a testament to her grief. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting their modest farm in a golden hue, Kate's work pressed on.
Night descended swiftly, cloaking the world in shadows that seemed to stretch for an eternity. Kate, perched upon her porch swing, found no solace in slumber. Her vigil was solemn, her gaze never wavering from the rough-hewn coffins that cradled her entire world within their confines.
With the break of dawn, the Reverend returned, his disapproval evident, yet tempered by resignation. Together, in a somber silence, they labored to fashion a final resting place. By mid-afternoon, the grave stood ready, a solemn abyss awaiting its occupants. With the Reverend's assistance, Kate tenderly lowered her cherished husband and daughter into the earth's cold embrace.
As dusk settled, the Reverend offered prayers and parting words before taking his leave. Left alone in her sorrow, Kate felt the weight of despair bearing down upon her. In a world forged by men and seemingly devoid of solace for a solitary widow, she found herself with no recourse but to depart.
Beneath the twilight sky, the epitaph etched upon their shared gravestone bore silent witness to her profound loss:
Here Lies My Beloved Noah, And Our Beautiful Daughter, Lorena.
May God Keep Their Souls.
━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━
1899
As the sun rose over the horizon, casting its golden rays across the sprawling expanse of Emerald Ranch, Kate found herself amidst the ebb and flow of another day's labor. Nine years had slipped by since the tragic loss of her husband and daughter, a span of time marked by wandering footsteps and the pursuit of odd jobs on her journey westward.
She had once heard her father say they had family in California, he had many sisters but only kept in touch with one. Kate wrote to her after the death of her husband, seeking asylum with a relative with nowhere else to go. Her Aunt wrote her back and gave her condolences, she said Kate would be welcome with open arms.
However, the last she heard of her Aunt was 7 years ago. But still, she continued west. She had come too far and been through too much to stop now. What she hoped to find in the valleys of California, she did not know anymore. Over the years she became more cowboy and less of a woman, her once soft hands now calloused by years of labor. The untamed plains and cold hard ground had become both her refuge and her bed.
She came to Emerald Ranch only a week ago, her boss; Seamus, was reluctant to hire a stranger, let alone a woman, to help on the ranch. Kate assured him she was cheap labor and was only looking for shelter and a place to rest until she was on the move again. Kate was no stranger to odd jobs, she took any work she could get and saved as much as she could. But she was no criminal.
She heard Seamus talking to two men as she filled the troughs with clean water. The gentlemen said they were new in town and looking for a partnership, one in which they could both make money.
“Look I ain't no idiot, and I don't trust folks outta the blue. If you want to work together then you're gonna have to prove to me you’re worth my time.” Her boss's voice raised above the usual noise of the barn animals.
“Of course! We’re only interested in a partnership, just looking to make a little extra money.” Carried the voice of an older gentleman.
“No doubt. I do interesting very well. It's trusting that I don't do so well.” her boss answered, still not convinced by the two strangers.
“Look at us, we’re honest as the day is long,” said the other man with cheer.
“You really want us to prove ourselves to this clown Hosea?” said the other voice, sounding much younger than his partner.
Seamus scoffed, “good day to you, Hosea.”
“N-now wait a minute Seamus. Arthur can be rough, and quick with his tongue, but I swear you can trust him, you can trust me.” Hosea pleaded, following Seamus to the side of the barn. Kate now had a clear view of the new “business partners”.
Kate didn't know Seamus very well, but she could tell he was an honest enough man. Wise for his years, and liked to keep his nose out of trouble. “I’m an old man Hosea,” he began, “and you know why I ain’t dead yet?”
“Because you don't trust idiots,” Hosea finished.
“Exactly.”
“We’re not idiots, Seamus. Let us prove it to you.” Hosea had an air of confidence, he wasn't some runaway bum looking to make a quick buck. He was serious about a partnership. Although Kate wouldn't say the same for his partner, who loomed behind them like a panther ready to pounce.
“Okay…I’ll tell you what, old Bob Crawford and his boys just bought a beautiful stolen stagecoach from up north. It’s in their barn. Now you go get that,” he looked around for anyone who might be listening to his scheming, “then we can work together.” He said quietly, placing a hand on Hosea’s shoulder.
“Who’s Old Bob Crawford?” inquired Hosea.
“An acquaintance of mine…well, not just an acquaintance. He’s my cousin, by marriage.” Seamus explained.
“Oh so now we’re meddlin’ in your family business?” Arthur boasted with skepticism.
Hosea waved him off and continued speaking, “Where is he located?”
“Now hang on a moment, you boys could very easily take this coach and sell it yourselves for a pretty penny,” Seamus began.
“So you comin’ with us? I thought you didn't want to be involved in shady business?” Arthur spoke up again.
“Heavens no, if my cousin saw me it would be my death. I'm sending someone with you, as collateral.” Seamus turned around and saw Kate already watching them, he waved her over.
Arthur shook his head disapprovingly, “nah, I don't do babysitters Seamus.”
Kate was just as skeptical about her part in this, she told Seamus she was looking for honest work, and robbing his cousin certainly falls out of that line.
“She’s not babysitting . She’ll take you to my cousin's farm and let you do the robbing. Kate has been working for me for a few days now and she’s tougher than she looks.” Seamus said turning to Kate, “I want you to make sure that stage coach gets back to me. You don't need to take part in the robbery.”
“You’re fine with them robbing your cousin?” She spoke in a hushed tone so only Seamus could hear.
“By marriage,” he added, “and yes, I would love it. The man’s been a thorn in my ass for years.” He said amused.
She nodded in acknowledgement and turned to get a good look at the two strangers. One was indeed much older than the other, with cropped white hair peeking out from under his hat. The other gentleman was tall and burly, and he hid his eyes under the brim of his hat. He seemed wary of strangers and kept both hands resting on his gun belt.
“Let me get my horse saddled and I’ll meet you boys at the intersection leading out of town.” She spoke, Hosea nodded and was already making his way to his horse. Arthur stood for a moment eyeing the woman, no doubt playing the intimidation tactic. But Kate had seen far scarier men than him in her days. “Y'know the quicker we get this done the quicker you fellas get paid.” She noted.
Arthur scoffed and finally followed Hosea to his horse, “don't need no damn babysitter,” he grumbled kicking dust.
━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━
Kate made quick work of saddling her black Hungarian roan, she calls Lorena. After her infant daughter. In a moments pass she was on the dirt road leading out of Emerald Ranch and toward Carmody Dell. She waved for the two men to follow her, they stayed behind her a short distance and made no effort for small conversation.
However, she overheard snippets of their own conversation as they went, “I thought you wanted me to be the strong arm? That's usually how it goes,” Arthur spoke.
“Yes but..” Hosea hesitated, lowering his tone a little, “you know how this works.”
“Cmon Hosea that fellers a joke, he don't even trust us enough to handle it ourselves. Now we got a chaperone.” Arthur complained loudly, at least he’s not calling me a babysitter , Kate thought.
“All the better, he won't cause us any problems. And I cant blame the guy for sending the girl. Two strangers looking for quick money? Hell, I’d want assurance too.” Hosea answered, “besides, if he’s sending protection that means there’s big money to be made. Seamus wants his cut.”
Kate came to the same conclusion, up until now Seamus had given her the usual ranch-hand tasks. Feeding and cleaning mostly. This was very different, there must be good money for this stage coach.
“I guess you’re right,” Arthur muttered.
Hosea mumbled something back to Arthur about “hanging up their hats” if they couldn't finish a job as easy as this. They laughed and began chatting about their travels in Emerald ranch, Kate tuned them out and began humming a song to her horse.
Her singing always pleased her horse and calmed the girl’s nerves. She was a strong and fierce steed, but jumpy and needy like a baby sometimes. Kate thought naming her horse after her daughter would bring her closure, instead, she was almost convinced that her daughter's spirit lived on in Lorena somehow. In all ways except biological, her horse was her baby.
Carmody Dell was a short distance north past the train tracks and Fort Wallace, Kate had passed it once before. They rode at a steady pace, the men behind her never coming too close. She wondered for a moment what their story was, and why they needed money so bad. Perhaps they were travelers like her, maybe they even had a caravan. She entertained the thought of traveling with a group again, but shuddered at the memories. Her previous caravan adventures had not ended well.
Once the ranch was in view she slowed and allowed the boys to catch up on either side of her. She led them to a grassy clearing off the road.
“You should continue on foot from here, I’ll stay behind with your horses.” She said dismounting. The two of them nodded and dismounted their horses, Kate was almost surprised to hear no objections from Arthur.
“C'mon son, let's see what we’re dealing with here.” Hosea commented walking towards a large rock in front of the house.
“Son”, so they are family . She mentally noted. Arthur gave his horse a pat, “be a good girl for the lady” he said, tipping his hat towards Kate. She was slightly taken aback by the sudden politeness.
She busied herself with the horses for a bit while the men laid out their plan, she gave Hosea and Arthurs horse a treat and was about to start brushing his horse when he approached her again. Startled, she backed away from his mare, she didn't want him to think she was snooping in his saddle bags.
“You can keep brushin’ her, she loves attention,” he half smiled reaching up and petting her snout. “I just came to tell ya’ we’re gonna wait till it gets dark. Less chance of getting caught that way.”
“Smart,” she replied, for whatever reason she suddenly felt very shy in his presence.
He stood a few feet away from her and she could see more of his features. He was around her age. He had short dirty blond hair under his leather hat, and bright blue/green eyes. Her eyes lingered over his body. He was big too, more than a foot taller than her and well fed and muscular. His bicep had to be the size of her head alone, and she could tell by the fabric of his button down he had a bit of a belly hidden behind his gun belt.
“What’s her name?” His voice broke through her awkward silence.
“Who?” She asked and looked back at him.
He chortled, “the black beauty you got over there,” he nodded to her horse.
Oh, duh! “Her name is Lorena, she also loves attention but she’s nervous around new people.” Kate answered, still a bit lost in her thoughts.
Arthur made a clicking sound with his tongue, reaching out a hand and slowly walking toward her horse. “It’s alright girl,” he cooed while she sniffed his palm. He pulled out a peppermint and gave it to her, which Lorena happily accepted.
Kate smiled at the interaction, “you introduce yourself to my horse before me?” she teased.
“My apologies ma’am,” he turned to face her, “names Arthur Morgan.”
“Nice to meet you Mr. Morgan, I’m Kate McCanon.” She reached out her hand and he shook it. His grip was firm but polite.
“Likewise, Miss.McCanon. That’s Belle your brushin’, and that’s Silver Dollar.” He pointed at Hosea’s horse. “I saw this beauty when we first rode into Emerald ranch, had no idea she was yours tho.” He was talking about her horse again, “told myself I’d inquire about buying her if she was available.”
Kate smiled at the affection he was showing for her horse, she knew Lorena was a beautiful mare. She often received compliments on the road, and many have offered to pay for her purebred.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you, but she’s not for sale.”
“Well I can certainly see that,” he laughed, “she seems happy though. You must take real good care of her.” He said, his attention still on her mare as he scratched under her chin.
“You some kind of horse breeder Mr. Morgan?” Kate asked.
Arthur laughed, “no no. Nothing like that, though sometimes I wish I was.” He smiled as he said it but Kate noticed there was a sadness in his tone. “I just think they’re neat is all.”
They had only just met, and while Arthur was not initially the most pleasant, she found it incredibly cute how enraptured he was by her horse.
“I should probably also apologize for my rudeness earlier, it’s been a rough couple weeks for us and we uh- don’t always take too kindly to strangers.” Arthur took off his hat as he spoke and held it to his chest, a sincere gesture.
Kate was shocked, the man she met at Emerald ranch not even an hour ago seemed like a completely different person than the man before her. His cold demeanor was gone, or at least reined in at the moment.
“No apology needed Mr. Morgan. I understand,” She answered. “Although I wouldn’t call it rude, you were just skeptical. Rightfully so, can I ask what brings you to Emerald Ranch?”
Arthur looked away from her as he spoke, choosing to focus on her horse. “We’re just stayin’ in the area for a few weeks. Passin’ through and tryna make money.”
“By robbing stagecoaches?” Kate said in an amused tone, “you a bunch of outlaws or something?” She continued, half-joking.
Arthur looked at her with surprise, “What? No, we uh- got laid off from the railway. Up-north. Just looking for money so we can find a place to settle down again. That’s all.” He looked away again, avoiding her gaze.
“I’ll say it again, by robbing stagecoaches?” She kept her tone playful, but wasn’t entirely convinced by his story. But it felt good to be the intimidator.
“Wasn’t our idea, Seamus asked us to rob his cousin!” His voice rose slightly with anger.
“By marriage,” Kate retorted.
Arthur was about to speak again but only stared at her.
“I’m just pulling your leg Mr. Morgan.” Kate laughed. “It’s no business of mine. I’m only passing through here, same as you. What you do here and how you earn your money is your business. As is mine.”
Arthur scoffed, suddenly amused, did this woman just tease me?
He went to speak again before another voice interrupted them, “Arthur! Get over here!” Called Hosea. He pointed a finger at Kate as to say this isn’t over and walked away.
Amused with herself, Kate grabbed an apple and sat down against a tree. Watching the sun set as she waited for the cover of night so the two men could pull off their heist.
━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━
Kate woke suddenly to the sound of horses moving. She quickly got up and looked in the direction of the ranch. Sure enough the stage coach was steadily moving down the path away from its place in the barn. She quickly mounted her horse and trotted over to them.
“Nice work! Follow me back to Emerald Ranch and try to keep it in one piece.” She called up to Hosea who was driving the coach. With that she clicked her tongue and took off ahead of the coach at a steady but quick pace. Not wanting to get themselves caught.
Before Hosea could crack the reins he looked to Arthur as he was about to get in the coach, “you ride ahead with her. I got this.”
Arthur looked confused, “why wouldn’t I ride with you? The horses will follow.”
Now Hosea was giving him an amused look, “I heard you with her earlier.”
“And?” The cowboy replied slightly annoyed.
“You’ve never fumbled our cover story so bad!” He quipped, “it was like listening to a child tell it!”
Arthur shook his head, “now you’re playin’ match maker old man?” He teased, trying to hide his smile.
“I’m just saying it wouldn’t kill you to go talk to her son."
Without another word Arthur nodded and dismounted the coach, getting into the saddle and riding off to catch up to Kate.

● Ohhhkay so I did write it up in the end. It is short and bittersweet but I've been feeling pretty bittersweet myself lately so what better way to vent your emotions than write a short story about your favourite character and even better yet - make it an 'X reader' fic?! Hope ya'll enjoy. This is my first time posting a short story and I'm not very good at it, so yeah. Thanks for your time and patience ^^
● This LOOSELY follows the canon of RDR1 & RDR2, take this as an AU.
------------------------------------------
The early morning spring sunshine kept no prisoners when it came to waking, seeping it's stunning golden rays into the inner workings of your little log cabin, falling upon your perfectly sound and peacefully sleeping face.
Your eyes had flickered open at the disturbance of the bright glow against your closed lids, drawing a long winded yawn from your very core as you slowly pulled yourself up and out of the thick Elk pelt blanket that lie on your masterfully crafted bed.
Already the harmony of songbirds and chittering of love-crazed squirrels gifted your ears. It was barely past 6am, life here in the mountains demanded an early rise unless grey clouds cursed overhead; you knew you could sneak in an extra hour under the cover of disturbed weather within the sleepy sky when it had rolled in.
Alas, today was no different than the last few. Blue skies blessed the day ahead, promising yet another warm and forgiving twenty four hours.
When you finally decided to leave your bedroom and trapse slowly into the dining room, a flash of blonde caught your eye within the largest room of the house, sitting idol against a little wooden stool, fixated on something within their soft pink hands.
You gently placed a foot in front of the other creeping into the room, making your way silently closer to the little girl that had, what you came to realise, a little photo; two people sat practically joint at the hip upon a beautiful white steed, arms linked and hands entwined, cheerful smiles lightning their expressions. Your eyes fell upon one such figure in the image; a man dressed in almost all black attire, a charming smile, sparkling eyes and a neatly trimmed beard that was not quite cleanly shaven, two little unique scars trailing across his chin, and a unique leather hat with bolo cord wrapped around it's base.
"Lookin' at pictures of your father?" As you spoke, the little girl shot you a surprised expression with a small gasp, her brilliant blue eyes wide and startled, blonde whisps of long hair obscuring her vision: "You scared me half to death!"
"Sorry Y/d/n" You came to stand beside her, brushing the loose strands from her eyes and wrapping an arm around her waist as you drew a spare finger across the image, smiling sadly, "What are you doing up so early?"
"Uncle Charles came to deliver some fresh food about half an hour ago, he woke me to tell you that it's already been cured." Y/d/n gestured her hand towards the dining hall, indicating that Charles' delivery was somewhere within that room. He was a good man, he cared for you and Y/d/n deeply, having been a good friend of you and Arthur back when the Van De Linde gang still ran. He had found you cradling Arthur's body on top of that hill all those years ago, gently consoling you, burying Arthur with you and taking you to stay with John and Abigail whilst you recovered. After learning from Abigail that you were carrying Arthur's child not long after, he had made it his duty to provide for you. He and John had worked on building you a little log cabin just feet away from Arthur's resting place, surprising you one day with your new homestead. From then onward, Charles would visit you on a regular basis with medicine and food, helping to deliver your child and even going into hiding with your own daughter whilst you sought out Micha to kill the bastard.
Now, you were safe. Micha was dead, as was Dutch. The Pinkertons were disbanded, Bill was six feet under, Javier was who knows where in some long distance cell... all of those people who you'd concidered family once who had turned mad and dangerous, gone. Even the good men and women you respected were either dead or elsewhere, so far you couldn't possibly track them. John, Abigail... gone.
Charles and not-so-little Jack were the last of the gang you saw now.
Y/d/n slumped into your embrace with a soft giggle, but then that cheery grin was replaced with an expression you could only describe as confused, upset and perhaps even a bit lost. She spoke quietly, almost as if what she was asking was to be frowned upon, "What was he like?"
"Your father? He was amazing." You had both spoken about Arthur's life before, though you'd known that y/d/n was far too young to understand and comprehend you back then. Perhaps now would be the right time to explain things better.
"Your father was a good man, despite what he ever thought about himself," You began, gazing upwards to watch the flames of the fireplace dance and twirl, "He did bad things- we all did bad things when we were younger, but all for the greater good no less. We were dealt bad hands when we were small you see... but in the end, your father got the redemption he had been searching for. He saved a lot of people during his life, gave others opportunities they'd never imagined and dealt with those who sought to harm others." Your mind wandered deep into past memories, recalling that one time you and Arthur had met, him rescuing you from the O'driscolls, and then to the more light hearted time when Arthur had foolishly attempted to mount another man's horse in order to return the scrawny nag, only to be bucked off right into the creek beside you both. He'd stank of that bog for days afterward, but you remained by his side whilst others avoided him like the plague.
"What he would have given to see you now..." a crack within your voice threatened to draw tears, but you refrained, turning to face your daughter with a proud smile, placing a little kiss onto her forehead, "He'd be smitten."
"Do you think he knows I exist, wherever he is?" The expectant tone of y/d/n drew a pained smile from your lips, carding fingers through her impossibly soft, long, blond hair, "Of course he does," You continued, briefly catching the time with your eye; 6.50am, work in ten minutes.
"Whenever you feel lost or down, just remember that your father is always by your side, even if you can't see him." Placing another gentle kiss against your daughters head, you removed yourself from the embrace and fixed your jacket onto your shoulders from the wall as well as the same leather black hat Arthur once wore onto your head, "Be good today. I'm just off to check on the stables." You ruffled Y/d/n's hair, planting one last gentle kiss against her crown and headed for the door, taking another brief look back with a soft smile before leaving.
*  *  *
Home alone once again. It was something Y/d/n was accustomed to after spending much of her life sheltered away from all of the bad in the world.
Y/d/n hadn't blamed you, though. The world was indeed cruel. Oh so very cruel. She had hidden away whilst you stalked to the ends of the West and beyond, hunting down all of those who threatened your daughters life, all down to the very last.
Y/d/n made her way to the dining hall, carefully picking her way past the little table where the wrapped sections of cured Mountain Goat meat had been stored from Charles earlier that morning. She ran her hands past the wooden counter top and reached for the little wooden box next to the wash basin, pulling the tiny doors open.
Just as she'd expected: An empty jar labeled 'Wild Mint.'
Cooking was Y/d/n's calling, it seemed. She'd learnt many a trick from you over the years, but it was Charles who taught her the most.
He had explained the importance of each herb around the Grizzlies, where to find them and what their properties were, and especially how to store and prep them for cooking. Wild Mint was a common plant, but it also meant she had used it the most. It made for a wonderful seasoning afterall, and thus that meant running low on the particularly smelly plant was an all too common occurrence, and so Y/d/n raced towards the front door, whipping a large blue winter coat over her flowery dress onto her incredibly small body, pulling her little dark brown satchel bag over her shoulder, leaping into smaller boots and burst out into the open world.
Spring brought with it the last whisps of winters cool breath. It blew gently across the wooded landscape, catching the underneath of Y/d/n dress that made her quake, grasping the large edges of the dark blue fabric and tugging them tightly around her small figure, burying her face into the fur-lined neck of the coat, inhaling the faintest smell of raspberries and cigarette smoke.
Ocean blue eyes scanned the mountain range, vast verges and sloping hills carrying on for miles around. Drawing her attention over towards the little wooden cross, Y/d/n gave the object a faint smile, bowing her head ever so slightly with a little wave and whispered "I'll be back soon."
Y/d/n had only made it some thirty foot down the hillside before she came to the first thick stretch of woodland. It was heavy with the smell of pine needles and tree sap, damp earth and mycelium. As she strode deeper into the confines of the wood, a faint lingering scent of fresh mint leaves tickled her nostrils. Not far to go now.
There it was, a bundle of stretching stems flush with tiny green leaves grasping for the twinkle of sun rays through the treeline: wild mint.
They were situated at the foot of a large pine tree surrounded by various little rocks, likely from a previous rock slide within the area. Y/d/n scampered over, unravelling the little leather cord to pull open the fold of her satchel and clapped her hands together, rubbing them viciously so that the friction warmed her skin. Next, she settled at the base of the mint, digging fingers into the dirt and began to claw at the dark brown earth. Hooking under fresh, light brown threads, Y/d/n tugged, listening to the sound of snapping roots and felt the sensation as the cords of the mint began to click away from eachother. The first stem of mint finally came free, Y/d/n delicately removing the leaves from the stem and placing them into one jar whilst the bare stems were placed into another.
That's when the sound of snapping twigs sent a bullet of terror through the heart of the little girl.
Crystal eyes scoured the scene ahead of her in quick jerking actions as she stayed motionless in a crouch, one hand outstretched and hovering whilst the other stabilised her against the trunk of a tree.
The sound came again, closer, and finally Y/d/n caught sight of her stalker.
Just ahead of her stood a magnificent White Tailed Buck, perhaps the largest she had ever seen. It's crown of antlers bore eight points on either side, wide and almost intimidating yet elegant and luxurious. Beautiful eyes seemed to gaze into Y/d/n's very soul, and as she gazed back, she could have almost swore she saw a flicker of blue within the Buck's irises as it began to slowly sauter closer towards her.
The atmosphere within the surrounding woodland suddenly felt at ease, as if there was a complete and total shift within the universe. The Buck grew closer and closer and Y/d/n did not shift. She held her outstretched hand out towards the brilliant creature, gasping softly as it's muzzle pressed delicately into her palm, eyes slowly closing and it's heavy breathing faltering to a relaxed and slow huff.
Thundering hooves against the hard unstable ground alerted Y/d/n; a horse had been tracking her movements from the house, now making ground towards her location in quick sucession. A flash of silver and black came screeching to a stop just some feet away from her, whinnying at the harsh flicker of pebbles and stones against it's broad limbs, old age had caught up with the big brute of an animal.
You had found Y/d/n, a flash of relief sparking within your eyes as you met your daughters mesmerised gaze, and you opened your jaw to call out a loud cry of relief before your voice hitched - caught within your throat at the very sight before you.
The Buck had not fled at your arrival, rather it turned it's attention away from Y/d/n and set it's gaze upon you, ears pricking slightly almost as if it had recognised you.
Some strange force of nature - almost like a beckoning drew you from your mount and slowly stepping over towards the handsome creature. Your stomach tied into large knots and your heart fluttered within the confines of your chest cavity, and without an understanding as to why, you felt a sudden urge to come to the Buck's level, crouching down to meet it head height.
The wonderous creature took a small hoof step forward, drawing in your scent through it's nostrils, brown fur catching the wind. Slowly, he drew himself closer and closer until he had paused only inches from your face. There was a moment of uncertainty between you both - at any moment this majestic  creature could very well strike out at you, goring you in the exposed flesh of your throat and head with each individual point of his antlers.
You, however, remained seated.
Throughout all of your years hunting crazed ex-gang members, finding yourself crawling out of an explosion in hopes of finding a health tonic and finding the deceased bodies of fallen loved ones, you had always briefly acknowledged a White Tailed Buck guiding you along, watching you, following you and even guiding you towards help.
You'd always pinned it down to some sort of whacky reoccurring hallucination but now...
The Buck turned it's nose upwards. Slowly, he began to ever so gently nudge the black, beaten leather hat that rest upon your head. He nibbled delicately at the worn and tired leather bolo cord that hung loose against the inner rim of the accessory.
You let out a sudden, soft gasp, eyes wide with pure emotional shock and understanding. You felt every inch of you freeze and burn into a thousand suns, your stomach bunching up and head speaking a billion silent questions without answers.
You knew what- or who- this was.
The Buck slowly pulled away, giving you and Y/d/n some space as it gazed longingly at you both. You drew yourself onto your feet, eyes still wide and bright with shock and a confusing concoction of emotions as you came to stand behind your daughter, hands resting upon her shoulders and giving them a soft reassuring squeeze.
Your smile was as delicate as fresh rose petals, a timid flush crossing your cheeks. Your eyes glistened as tears began to form in the corners, creating tiny little gemstones of water, twinkling golden within the spring sunshine.
As you held your sights upon the Buck, you felt a rush of old memories and emotions flood you like a sudden tidal wave. Your body almost trembled at the sight now, the feeling of pure love and loss encasing you so confusingly at the same time. But you remained, and the overwhelming sense of dear calmness overtook each and every frightening feeling that chipped away at you.
A familiar smile lased your expression now, one that had not been since since you found yourself in the warm and loving embrace of Arthur. It was a sight to behold indeed, and to your surprise, the Buck's ears perked once more and tail flicked as if it had acknowledged that expression upon your face.
Y/d/n did not make even the smallest of sounds. She simply stood there, lips parted in a grinning gaup and eyes pinned directly onto the Buck in pure emotional awe. She huddled herself a little deeper into the blue winter coat at the passing bluster of a sudden breeze, gaining an acknowledging small, almost silent squeak from the Buck himself.
You wished this moment would last forever, but as the winds grew a little stronger and the sound of a distant bear call echoed in the distance, the Buck turned to give you an almost pleading look as if to say 'get yourself home into saftey.'
Tears welled within your eyes again as you allowed them to trickle down your soft flushed cheeks, giving the creature a small nod in silent understanding agreement.
You watched him back up slightly and turn to face the thick cover of the woodland, spreading out into a vast, dense forest.
It had almost felt as though time came to a standstill as the Buck began it's decent into the heavier tree line. You felt a longing to call him back, to grasp at him - anything to keep that small flame of awe alive.
You remained silent.
Before the creature pushed itself into the shadows, it took one last look back at you both.
A sad smile caught your lips and your voice finally released itself from your throat, quietly speaking a "Thank you for everything."
Bowing it's head ever so slightly, the Buck then pushed itself back through the treeline and into the shadows, leaving you to stare ahead, hands still pressed against Y/d/n shoulders.
The ride home had been a silent one. Dusk was now breaking, and the evening chorus was a gentle reminder that Y/d/n's bed time was creeping up slowly.
You had ushered her to bed accompanied with a little jug of water placed upon a tiny bedside table. You allowed her to wriggle herself into a much comfier position before tucking the Elk skin sheet up, giving Y/d/n a little peck on the forehead, exchanging a tender "I love you" between yourselves before you made haste for the doorway. Charles had arrived to help you prepare yourself dinner, and there was a lot to tell him about.
"Ma?" Y/d/n was gazing at you with wide, questioning and innocent ocean blue eyes.
"Yes, sweetheart?" You paused, leaning yourself against the door post as you gazed back into the room, meeting her ocean blue eyes.
"Do y'think Father will come visit again? Like today?"
There was a brief silence, but not one of sadness or regret but rather of seldom hope and genuine happiness as you replied with a simple -
"Yes darlin'. Turns out he's been here all along."

LARKSPUR - Chapter Two:  wayfaring strangers and all kinds of danger
“Colm, then?” asked Hosea, arms crossed across his chest. Arthur shook his head and took another pull from the bottle. “Girl’s got her own demons chasin' her, by the looks of it,” “She ain’t an outlaw too, is she?” Another shake of his head, “Naw. As danger mounts, Ramona must outwit both friends and foes in a desperate bid to protect her freedom and her life.

shipuary day 03 | emmaline nielson x arthur morgan
Masterlist : link
Summary : Arthur finds out he's sick. He tries to hide it from Emmaline, but she quickly finds out and confronts him about it.
Warning : RDR2 chapter 5-6 spoilers, big angst, Arthur being self-deprecating, mentioned alcoholism, attempt at comfort but neither are comforted, this is depressing and I'm so sorry.
Tumblr media
“You got tuberculosis.”
Those words echoed in Arthur’s mind on loop. The look of pity on the doctor’s face for the dying man sitting in his chair seared into Arthur’s mind. The weight of the news more heavy than anything he’s ever carried in his life.
Facing death was almost a daily thing for Arthur, but he’s always dodged death’s claws. He’s never faced the grim reaper like this. The reaper looming over his shoulder with a timer, just waiting for the final grain of sand to fall and he could finally grasp the soul of this outlaw. What was waiting for Arthur on the other side, he didn’t know. But he had an idea and it wasn’t pleasant. Maybe he deserved it though, for all the pain and suffering he has caused in his life.
Words Emmaline has spoken to him before echoed in his memories as those thoughts began to creep their way in: “Don’t be ridiculous, Morgan. You’re probably the best man I have ever gotten to know. What seems to be good men can actually be the monster underneath.”
How a woman like that could think about him in that way was beyond him. He truly didn’t deserve her. But the thought of telling her of the limited time he has, haunted him. She’s lost so much already, the list of people she’s cared for deeply is so long, how can he add himself to that list?
Arthur couldn’t tell her.
Trying to keep this a secret from Emmaline would end up being impossible. Arriving back to camp, she was - as usual - the first to greet him back. Usually it was a little “hello” and maybe some conversation. But since what happened with Guarma, she would kiss him “hello” instead. Arthur wasn’t one who enjoyed showing his affection for this woman publicly, sometimes when there was a party or they were out he was more open, but he enjoyed just having her to himself in the privacy of his tent. But after being gone for weeks in Guarma, he didn’t complain about being greeted with a kiss from Emmaline.
When she leaned up to him to try and press her lips against his own, he quickly dodged her lips, moving back and pushing her hips back a little to take a little step back. The fear of spreading this deadly disease to the woman he loves ran through him like a lightning strike.
The confusion spread across her face squeezed at his chest. But her safety was more important to him than anything else. “Sorry, darling. I can’t stay long. I have to talk to Dutch.” Arthur tells her, his throat feeling scratchy from the coughing fit he had on the way to the doctors.
“Oh, okay.” Emmaline didn’t seem too convinced, but didn’t pry further. She raised her hand to cup his cheek gently, her thumb brushing against his rough skin so gently, he knew he didn’t deserve this touch from her. “You look clammy, are you feeling okay?”
“Feeling fine, hon. Don’t worry about me.” Squeezing her hips, he side-stepped from her grasp. Making way to go to the broken down swamp house he knows Dutch will be at. “I’ll come see ya later, okay?”
“Okay,” Emmaline muttered, watching him stalk off before going off on her own to do some chore Miss Grimshaw probably put her on.
Arthur felt like shit.
Emmaline knew about the cough, it was just little anytime she would witness it and had given him medicine for it. Just to ease his lungs. But she didn’t know the extremes of it. Finding specks of blood on his shirts or gloves was easy to lie about, she didn’t seem too concerned about it as it was a common occurrence with many of their clothes. But the exhaustion, pale and sunken face, and clammy skin? She saw right through him.
“Arthur, you look exhausted.” Emmaline says to him one afternoon, watching him prepare to go out and find their new campsite. “You should go rest. Have one of the other men go find us somewhere else to go.”
“I’m okay, darling.” Arthur held her face gently, pressing a kiss onto her hair where she had a bandana in. Not touching her skin with his lips as much as he could. “There’s no one else who can do the job. Besides, Charles will be with me.”
She frowned and seemed to get ready to argue her point, but he turned before he could hear another word.
Beaver Hollows was their new camp. How long they would stay here to keep the Pinkerton's off their trail, he didn't know. But the dynamic between everyone in the camp changed to heavily, nothing was the same anymore. Argument would break out constantly, especially with Karen and her drinking getting worse by the hour. It didn’t help the situation when two men joined their group - Cleet and Joe - some friends of Micah’s. A new tension growing between everyone in camp.
Arthur had given up hiding that something was wrong with him at this point, it becoming increasingly more difficult to hide how much the coughs affected him. The pain in his chest and lungs getting worse day by day. When he thought he had experienced the worst of it, he would wake up and be proven wrong.
If Emmaline didn’t know at that point, she had to know with Micah’s new nickname for him; "Black Lung."
Why she wasn’t demanding to tie him to his bed to keep him on bed rest was very odd of her, but he could see the sad look in her eyes anytime he caught them. Just adding to the guilt riddling through his core that neither have talked about the obvious inevitable.
When she did snap, he wasn’t surprised and didn’t put up any fight to keep it anymore. The woman marched her way to his tent, a look in her eye he knew meant she was upset. Arthur Morgan may be an idiot, but he knew when to not pick a fight with Emmaline Nielson. He watched from where he sat on his cot as she closed the canvas sheet around his tent, turning to him with her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. “I know something is going on.” She started, a firm edge to her voice. “You’re sick. So cut the crap and come with me, we have to take you to a doctor. And if you resist I will force you, Morgan.”
“I don’t need to see a doctor, hon.”
“Like hell you don’t-”
“I have already seen one.” He interrupted her fury, knowing a rant was coming his way if he didn’t.
“You have?” She falters. Lowering herself to sit next to him. “When?”
“A couple weeks after the Guarma stuff. He uh… Well, it’s not good.”
“Well, what is it?” Emmaline’s patience with him was running thin by now. He didn’t blame her for being done with him.
“I’ve got TB. I don’t have long, according to the doctor.”
“What..?” Her voice goes so quiet, almost a whisper, it painted him to his very core. Worse than the pain he was feeling in his chest currently.
“I’m dying. There isn’t anything to do about it.” He looks into her eyes finally, the glassy look in her eyes as the tears begin to well up hurt more than any wound Arthur has ever felt. He didn’t want to be the cause of those tears ever in his life. “I’m sorry I haven’t told you.”
“Why didn’t you?” Emmaline’s frustration was starting to rise again. He deserved to be at the mercy of her anger, so he didn't stop her. “I deserved to know, Arthur. Hell, I could’ve helped you!”
“I know, but I… I- I couldn’t bear to tell you.”
Emmaline looked away, wiping at her tears furiously, her breath was ragged as the whirlwind of emotions ran through her. He kept quiet as he let her work through them herself. He already angered her enough by not telling her, no need to make her worse by saying words he knew would be bullshit instead.
Her hand was gripping at her skirts so harshly, her hand shaking from the anger, and instinctively he reached out for it. She didn’t put up any protest, letting him ease her grip on her skirt and instead lace his fingers with hers. He squeezed it, a brief smile on her face as she squeezed him back. There wasn't anything he could to ease out upset she was, but the least he could do was do this.
Unfortunately, his lungs squeezed painfully in his chest, a coughing fit breaking out before he could suppress it. He dropped her hand like it was scalding him and tried to turn away from her as the coughs ran through his body against his will. He could feel Emmaline’s gentle hands as she rubbed his back, grounding him as his body convulsed painfully. He didn’t deserve this kind of touch from her, he knew that deep down. But he couldn't fight against it as his lungs squeezed.
Eventually, it passed. Arthur gasping for some breath to fill his chest. Emmaline was pressed up against his back now as she held him up, her arms wrapped around him so tightly, like she could prevent him from slipping away with her grasp alone. God, he wished that was true.
“You should’ve told me.” Emmaline whispers into his shoulder.
“I know,” he rasps. “I… wanted to.”
“I can’t waste time on anger with you.” She held him closer, Arthur raised his hand to squeeze her hand again, she gripped onto the hand tightly this time. “You should’ve told me the minute you found out, but anger right now is useless. We’re here now.”
Arthur wasn’t sure how long here was. But being in the arms of this woman he’s loved for years was the best any of them could do in the shitty situation they were in now.
