A new Florida law cracking down on undocumented immigrants, signed last month by far-right Gov. Ron DeSantis and set to take effect on July 1, has pushed thousands of workers to flee the state.
Now even some capitalists who otherwise support DeSantis and the state's GOP-controlled House and Senate are beginning to speak out about how the law is likely to hurt their bottom lines.
As The Tallahassee Democrat reported Tuesday:
“In his packing plant, Graves Williams, a lifelong Republican, proudly explained the skill, labor, and manpower needed to provide tomatoes across North America, a feat that he says wouldn't be possible without immigrant laborers.
"We all love them to death," said Williams, whose family has been farming tomatoes for decades. "We couldn't run a business without them."”
Williams, the owner of Quincy Tomato Company, may soon be forced to try. Following right-wing lawmakers' passage of Senate Bill 1718, thousands of working-class immigrants, including many who are residing lawfully in the U.S., have opted to leave Florida.
The new law places harsh restrictions on undocumented immigrants. Among other things, it also requires the "repayment of certain economic development incentives" if the state, which plans to conduct random audits of businesses, "finds or is notified that an employer has knowingly employed" an undocumented immigrant without verifying their employment eligibility.
At the bill signing ceremony on May 10, DeSantis, who is now campaigning for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, slammed President Joe Biden's ostensibly lax immigration policies, saying: "We have to stop this nonsense, this is not good for our country... this is no way to run a government."
Data released earlier this month showed that unauthorized crossings of the U.S.-Mexico border fell sharply after the Biden administration imposed new asylum restrictions that went into effect when Title 42 ended on May 11. Undermining DeSantis' dubious accusation of inaction at the border, immigrant rights groups have condemned Biden's crackdown on asylum-seekers, saying the president's new ban deepens the bipartisan abandonment of international human rights law set in motion by the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, in Florida, DeSantis' xenophobic approach has sparked fears that "a labor shortage will leave crops unpicked, tourist hotels short of staff, and construction sites idle," The Tallahassee Democrat noted.
Notably, concerns are emanating from some Republican proprietors.
"How can one man pass one law and destroy all these businesses in Florida?" asked Williams.
"It's almost like he's doing it on purpose," Williams said. "I know he's doing it for politics, but the end results, it's going to be hard."
According to The Tallahassee Democrat: "Florida employers in construction, restaurants, landscaping, and many other service sectors already are struggling to fill jobs during what has been a post-pandemic, sustained stretch of low unemployment. The new immigration limits will compound that, many say."
However, the newspaper observed, many business owners still "refuse to speak publicly about the measure, fearing it could antagonize DeSantis."

Austria is judging the authenticity of  gay aslyum seekers based on sterotypes
A young man from Afghanistan seeking asylum as a gay man in Austria was turned away because he didn't act 'gay enough'.
"It can be read in the report that you don’t have many friends. Are not homosexuals sociable? “
"Neither your gait, your behavior or your clothing have even hinted approximately that you could be homosexual"
Not to mention the gay Iranian guy that was turned away because he didn't know what the colors of the LGBTQ flag meant, despite being in a relationship with an Austrian man. (Thank god that was overturned)
Austria is making legal decisions - ones that could threaten life or death - based on stereotypes, seriously? Gay people don't all have one personality and knowledge. This is ridiculous.

The scum in George square always say the same thing because it’s always the same group.
It’s *always* rule Britannia.
It’s *always* Fenian bastard.
It doesn’t matter whether they assault Black Lives Matter or Yes marches or Aslyum Seeker marches. They always say the same thing.
British nationalism is a disease.

So a lot of racist and willfully ignorant people who choose to continue to believe and say that the migrants coming to the border are doing it the “illegal way” are straight up WRONG.
First of all, YOU CAN APPLY FOR ASYLUM AT THE GODDAMN BORDER! It’s fucking legal. YOU HAVE TO BE THERE IN PERSON. Either you arrive at the border or you cross the border to apply for asylum! This is a part of the process that has been agreed upon by international law, which the US also took part in!
Most importantly: Educate yourself about immigration, refugee, and aslyum policies before you talk hateful bullshit by conflating. Ignorance begets hate very well on its own.
Immigrants, refugees, and aslyees are NOT the same! According to Rescue.org (link here):
1. Refugee
A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her home because of war, violence or persecution, often without warning.
2. Asylum seeker:
An asylum seeker is someone who is also seeking international protection from dangers in his or her home country, but whose claim for refugee status hasn’t been determined legally.
3. Immigrant:
An immigrant is someone who makes a conscious decision to leave his or her home and move to a foreign country with the intention of settling there.
There are some immigrants who say ignorant bullshit like “These migrants need to wait and do things the right way like we did! You cant just come running over to the border!” when they dont even realize that these MIGRANTS ARE WELL WITHIN THEIR RIGHTS BY COMING TO THE BORDER!! BC THEY SEEK ASYLUM!
This is why it is important to know the differences between immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. I cannot stress it enough: Educate yourselves about these policies and their processes.

Washington, DC: Memorial for Nebane Abienwi, Cameroonian asylum seeker who died in ICE custody
Monday, October 7, 2019 at 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM EDT
ICE headquarters, 500 12th St SW, Washington, DC 20024
Hosted by Cameroon American Council
From #CameroonCrisis to #BorderCrisis: Cameroonian Immigrant Dead in ICE Custody
**Please donate to help offset event costs, thanks! https://www.gofundme.com/f/takembeng-take-over ***
On Tuesday, a Cameroonian immigrant, Nebane Abienwi, 37, died in ICE custody. Over the past year, 9 people have died in ICE custody, many of whom were denied medical treatment or taken for treatment too late. As civil turmoil in Cameroon carries on, asylum seekers and refugees from Cameroon are gathering at the Southern border to the US in order to seek entry. His death is not an isolated incident. The UN has called the Cameroon crisis one of the worst in the world, and hundreds of Cameroonian asylum seekers are trapped in Mexico. The US House of Representatives have taken action and passed a resolution on Cameroon and a bi-partisan senate resolution 292 has been introduced and needs the attention of all senators. We must stand up to the US government and ICE to demand that the camps are closed, aslyum protocols are reinstated, and as we work for detainees to be released, they must receive medical care.
This Monday, October 7, join us for a candelight vigil outside the ICE headquarters in DC. Together, we will pay tribute to the memory of Abienwi, who died young and unfree in our nation’s cruel detention system. We will be convening on the sidewalk in front of ICE headquarters. Candles provided. Please share widely.
The event is located just three blocks south of the Smithsonian metro (blue/orange/silver lines) and about a 5-7 minute walk from L’Enfant plaza.

I am so ashamed at what this country has become and horrified that anyone supports any of these policies, especially those people who say they are Christians. You simply cannot be a person striving to live Christianity and support any of these policies. You simply cannot.
