“I’m going to love her in all the quiet ways, the slow ways, the loud and obnoxious ways. My heart has been moving steadily in that direction since she fell down the steps of a hardware store, right into my arms.”

In The Weeds already has me laughing out loud. I didn’t think I was going to like this because One Night Stand to Second Chance Romance isn’t my cup of tea, but I find myself loving it.

Book Review #85 of 2023--
Tumblr media
Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison. Rating: 4.25 stars.
Read from July 1st to 2nd.
It looks like we have found our Christmas in July winner. At least so far. We’ll see if one of the final books on this TBR can beat it. I picked this up on recommendation from a couple of romance booktubers; the only one I really remember right now being PeaceLoveBooks. And they were so right. This is a best friends fake dating situation that just pulls at my angst riddled heart strings. We follow Stella as she attempts to make everything on her Christmas Tree Farm perfect for social media influencer Evelyn and the competition she’s running to help out small businesses. The only problem is she lied on her application saying that she runs the farm with her boyfriend. Who doesn’t exist. Enter best friend Luka who is willing to help out by pretending to be her boyfriend while Evelyn is in town. But can Stella make it through this week without giving away even more of her heart?
This was such a joy to read. I think I want to own a Christmas tree farm now? This is actually the second book I’ve read in this Christmas in July that takes places on a Christmas tree farm. There was so much coziness and Christmas fun here that it has made me even more excited for the holidays (so glad we’re only 5 months away now). And, let’s be real here, we all know that I love myself some fake dating romance. The potential for angst is just so HIGH. It makes my weird little heart happy. I loved the setting, loved the angst, and I really loved these characters. Not just Luka and Stella but all of the characters. From the overprotective Sheriff to the baker working at the farm, to the farm hand and the stray kittens he adopts. It was all so lovely and fun. I also enjoyed how much of the story focused on the time before Evelyn arrived for the contest versus during her stay. It made the story much more reliant on our characters versus being reliant on the plot to move things forward. Also, as an asexual person, of course, I am going to mention the sex scenes. I thought the scenes here were really well done. I didn’t have the ick factor that I can have with some author’s sex scenes. It was steamy without being over the top or too dirty for me. Maybe still not something read on the bus ride to work, but a good time nonetheless.
I felt like the major drama at the end of the novel was settled too quickly. I really don’t think I would get over all of that so fast. But I did enjoy that the third act breakup seemed so realistic. It’s something that was focused on the fear of a person versus something happening outside of themselves. I wish we had gotten a better picture of Stella and Luka’s relationship before all of the fake dating stuff happened but I always want more in novels so we’ll take that with a grain of salt.
Overall, I give the book a 4.25 star rating, the romance a 4.5 star rating, and the Christmassy-ness of the book 4 poinsettias.

MIXED SIGNALS by B.K. Borison
Mixed Signals is one of the healthiest romance novels i’ve ever read. The fake-dating trope is usually hitched with some sort of miscommunication and misunderstanding, and despite the name, Mixed Signals has miscommunication running for the hills. It’s a fun, atmospheric romcom, (with a two chapter long spice scene!) and I adored every bit of it.
Layla and Caleb are so honest and open about themselves and their arrangement, and their communication impeccable. The dual POV, with dual narrators (who are wonderful!!), had me kicking my feet at both of their perspectives and their mutual pining and awkwardness. Layla is the ideal picture of sweetness and cottage-core instagram baker, while also having a heart of gold, and Caleb is the perfect unexpectedly handsome introvert, who truly understands and appreciates his partner.
I listened to this audiobook without having read the other two installments of the Lovelight Farms series, and while I can tell there are references and crossover characters that would make more sense if I’d read the books in order, I wasn’t left out or missing any crucial information.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Lovelight Farms books so I can get to know the whole cast.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for providing me with an audiobook ARC of this title.

I think it was November of last year, the last time I bought some physical books. A few days ago I decided to buy a couple of them and they arrived today! I have read them both on my Kindle, but wanted physical copies of them.
Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison, and Gothikana by RuNyx.
If you like the trope friends to lovers, small town romances that take place during Christmas, then Lovelight Farms is for you. And Gothikana is for the ones that like mysterious schools, the trope teacher student, and like spooky vibes.
