Figured it was about time I finally did one of these, so hey, hi, hello, I'm Rees (a.k.a. WhereOnceIWasFire). You can find some general info about me, and a masterlist of fics in this post!

Overshadowed - Long ass (140K) College AU, No One Knows, heavy angst, mystery w/ horror elements, mostly happy ending, but I also left it a bit open/ambiguous. I MIGHT write a sequel one day. Everything's Fine (And the Boss is Totally Not a Cryptid) - Outsider POV, intern gets hired at Vlad Co., shenanigans ensue. Oh so many Dracula references. H(a)unted - Weird, angsty little Ghost Hunter Danny AU. Separate Danny and Phantom. ALT ending. I have some ideas percolating to continue off the alternate ending. The Hazards of Being Hot High AF - Shippy Popular Psychology (Jazz/Dash) oneshot I found in my fics folder. Jazz visits Dash in the hospital after a football injury. Elementary, My Dear Fenton - Ecto-Implosion fic. A goofy comedy-mystery where Danny and the trio try to track down who left an anonymous gift in his locker. They get WAY too into it.

WIPs:

Not So Bitter Reunions - AU, canon divergence, badger cereal. The college reunion goes decidedly less off the rails than in canon, leading to some nefarious consequences. I'm just kind of vibing with this one. High School's a Beach - **AGIT SPOILERS** Dan's in high school. This one is so very unserious, but I think I've got a few more chapters left in me. Needs Must (When the Devil Drives) - Canon divergence. AU. Vlad and Harriet reconnect at the college reunion, but since Vlad's technically an evil spirit, he's adversely impacted by things like salt, windchimes, running water, etc. Bad News (Vlad/Harriet) shipfic. I just...I think they're neat. Bearer of Bad News - Post Phantom Planet (not AGIT compliant). Bad News fic because I have an illness and these two live in my head rent free. The GIW enlist Harriet's help in preventing Ghost King Danny from destroying the earth.

Drabbles/Ficlets:

DannyMay 2022 - I don't remember any of these being particularly good, but they do exist. I very much did not last the entire month. Drabble Dump from Tumblr asks - this is just what it sounds like. Though, in general, I'll probably start trying to post oneshots and/or collect the separate, individual Tumblr ask ficlets on this post now instead of just clumping them in a drabble dump on ao3. Monsters Don't Exist - horror vibes. AU. Vlad didn't peace out after the accident and he's keeping his enemies (Maddie and Jack) close. Jazz suspects their babysitter, Uncle Vlad, is more dangerous than everyone else in the family seems to think. Cheese Melt ficlet - Outsider POV. Dani has a parent-teacher interview. Cheese Melt ficlet #2 - Dani doesn't like the toy she got at Nasty Burger. Vlad gets her a new one. Badger cereal ficlet - No one knows AU. Danny works as a cashier and Vlad accidentally outs his supervillain indetity by infodumping to him when Danny makes idle customer-servicey smalltalk.

I'm going to have fun here and cover his FULL backstory lmao. As for canon -we only know what happened from the Accident in college and that's it. Nothin about his family life.

Vladimir Masters moved to America with his family when he was 9. They moved because his parents divorced and his father had visited the country often for work. He felt it'd be good to get a fresh start.

Vlad himself knew English but hadn't needed it for daily use, and thus struggled in practice. Plus, I'd imagine the cultural differences were a lot to get used to -suddenly living in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas must of been a shock. Even if he's visited the states before, this was a life altering experience.

Vlad always felt like a misfit, even before the move. His older brother was too old to hang out with his Cringe Fail lil bro and his father couldn't relate to him. Something about the kid was just... different, as his father put it. The two never saw eye to eye, having few things in common. None of this was malicious, his father still supported him and did his best to keep food on the table and the family happy.

I like the idea while the family wasn't perfect -the father had a drinking problem but was never abusive. Nothing super dramatic happened in Vlad's home life -notably so he doesn't have any tragic backstory or "justification" for how much of a manipulative bastard he is modern day. (not that there's anything wrong with tragic backstories. go ham if that's your jam!)

Growing up, Alicia and Maddie were Vlad's best friends. Back then, Maddie was more of a "wild child" and did whatever she wanted on impulse. Alicia was a Baby Butch, a tom boy who wasn't aware of her sexuality but knew she was not like other girls. Being in a small church town in the US South, the trio were the regular misfits. (Notably Alicia is a tad older and acted as the groups babysitter just as often as an instigator to adventure)

Jack lived in the small town but wasn't friends with them until high-school. Jack was a Cool Kid Jock, well liked for his jokey personality and his mid-to-bad football playing. Which, while not great, wasn't terrible and that's an improvement to the small town's crappy team.

However, one day Jack came into the school raving about seeing a ghost. It was funny for a few days -but Jack became obsessed and upset over the whole thing. No one believed him and mocked him, Jack took it very personal.

Maddie approached Jack and gave his story a shot. There's a ghost at the lake, he says. While neither Vlad nor Maddie believe him, they give it a shot cause Maddie thought it'd be fun.

Yeah. Ghosts are real. The trio are terrified but become enthralled. That summer they spend it trying to investigate the ghost -try to find her murderer and appease her vengeful spirit. The three cry and piss themselves scared but it's a major life-long bonding experience.

Turns out the ghost isn't a murder victim -she's just a woman who drowned when drunk while fishing. Her unfinished business was to escape the waters, scaring any locals who neared the water under moonlight. Sadly, without a strong tether to the ghost zone, her ghostly form fizzled out. The teens never really learn these truths.

The whole town is sick of their ghost hunting and are happy to see them leave for college lmao. The three have become Besties For Life, set out to become scientists and find an explanation to the supernatural. Vlad focused on mythology/technology, Maddie quantum physics, Jack with biology/medicine.

The accident happens but it's a direct result of BOTH Fentons. I feel it's thematically important if it's both of their faults, to mirror Danny's accident. Vlad's portal is kept on the whole time, after his death he sneaks into the lab and steals it for himself to keep. It speaks to him. Whispering to him of the Hell he's opened up. This is his portal, yet unnamed and characterized cause i spent all my creative energy on Danny's Portal, Liminal Gates. I don't wanna derail the post to those OCs, but essentially think of them as sentient portal ghosts. they're... not exactly that, but that's the gist.

// OK BELOW i get into depth over both Danny and Vlad's cause of deaths, not like, SUPER gorey detail but its implied of some very awful stuff. skip 4 paragraphs if you don't wanna read that

Tangent: Danny's accident is a result of exposed wire within the portal. In my AU, he doesn't touch an "on" button but rather grabs an exposed switch, yanking on a wire that burnt through his rubber glove and shocked him from hand to foot (which then bounced up to the brain). I got the sense from the theme song that the parent's just... forgot they had that switch in the blueprints, so it makes sense to me that it'd be unfinished and left unattended like that.

anyway now for Vlad's accident. I've mentioned before that in my AU that ectoplasm is in itself the opposite of life, and when in high concentration it'll become acidic and burn through organic matter.

That uh, happened directly to Vlad's face. After the initial blast, the ectoplasm congealed with his blood creating a thick barrier between his face and the air. So even after removing the blast's plasm, it was stuck.

Vlad was rushed to the hospital and bled out, the plasm seeping through into his lungs. It wasn't a fast death like Danny's. Miraculously, he "survived" and had his face bandaged and had to have surgeries to fix the damage. Sadly, even with what little skin was left, because the ectoplasm rooted itself into the skin layer it continued to blister with ecto-acny like in the show. It left him in the hospital for years.

Anyway while Vlad is also a Halfa-Paradox like Danny, he needs to consume Actual Literal Blood. (Not necessarily human blood, nor a living host's blood. usually he drinks animal blood in secret. He's a monster, but he's not THAT much of a monster!)

His body is more unstable and requires more blood to repatch itself. Danny's death was instantaneous and a 1 hour time range surrounding it to connect his timelines. For Vlad, it took 1-2 hours to die, so his timelines and time frame are more scrambled and full of various states of decay and gore. He needs to steel that life essence as well replenish his blood loss. Someone who is a Halfa-Paradox is the living embodiment of of those hour (or for Vlad, hours) they died and didn't die. They're a center point of those timeline selves, fused into one person while shifting between different bodies those timeline selves inhabit. Vlad's is incredibly unstable.

Anyway that aside, Vlad's power is blood based. He really is a vampire ghost. I know my AU mainly has been comedy but I do enjoy the darker side of the fandom (not to... the point some of ya'll go lmao) and Vlad focuses a lot more of this side of things. I've been uncertain on how to take his blood power -do I do blood bending? bleed on you until you're uncomfortable power?

Nah i think I'm going to go with a simple "those he's drunk blood from temporarily are mind controlled" or something. Vampires are a drain on society, a metaphor for their hoarding of wealth and feasting on the life force of the common man. Now as an adult, I see how some people can fall into a warped mindset that loves Capitalism even when it's the root of all evil in society. Uh. That's the best I got chief, Vlad's power is propaganda essentially.

He already uses his over-shadow power for a similar effect in canon, it's a very Vlad thing to do. It's just more.. gross and evil this time around.

Back to the Backstory: after the transition, Vlad fell onto desperate times as the hospital bills were enormous. After trying to handle it morally, he ended up resorting to petty theft using his new powers. Same as canon, this escalated to bigger robbery and then political power. Vlad is more subtle about than in canon, never showing his ghost form and learns to explain his wealth through business rather than staged luck.

Once he had some power and influence, he went back to his old friends hoping to prove to them that they did not ruin him but rather gifted him a wonderful life of wealth and success. He wanted to make them jealous and regret ghosting him and hurting him.

Except, they moved on and were forced to take on jobs outside of their ghost hunting interests. Vlad realized he hadn't actually won out here, he missed out on human connection and turned himself into a monster in the process. Now he's motivated in envying their humanity and family, rather than just a sick obsession to get with Maddie.

Vlad is a master 4D chess player, using his power to influence under his thumb. The Fentons actually were just stuck using their degrees for (gasp) more mundane use like medical research and engineering. Vlad masked his anger and played up the hero, becoming Uncle Vladdie and their boss. He funds their paranormal research, they see him as their good ol' college chum who's got everything.

But the Fentons and him don't connect well on a personal connection. Vlad is too distant and far-too-gone in his own world and self-obsession, Maddie and Jack are pleasant but never have free-time so end up blabbing about research or their kids. Not a great fit for reconnection. It's important to note these old friends have the potential to become buddies again, but Vlad feels compelled to plot and play a more distant role to get what he thinks will worm his way into their lives. Instead of, you know, being normal and just Talking Things Through.

So basically: Vlad is a lonely misunderstood kid who is befriended by some country girls and then later become a group of 3 ghost obsessed weirdos in town. Jack and Maddie are his only friends he's ever had since his hospitalization (isolated again) and later becoming obscenely rich that you stop seeing people normally. He's got rich fuckboi disease essentailly.

iirc Alicia doesn't like Jack because she blames him for getting her sister into ghost hunting (OR MAYBE that's fanon idr) but I also like to think she hates Vlad for becoming so slimey and doubling down on enabling their ghost interests. Like in my timeline of events, the Fentons were able to become normal respected scientists. (albeit, obscure) it's HIS fault they're able to do whatever they want now. she fucking HATES him

Might put some HCs for Ryou's yet another crossover AU as well (ft. me other gremlin aka @plxsmius and, again, @nerdynanny's feral scientists):

✧ The descendant of the man who had the name Katsuhiko as the crowned emperor, with a big part of his ancestor's biography remaining obscure. Unbeknownst to him, he's actually a reincarnation of this very same ancestor, while there are certain ghosts who are aware of this and what actually happened to Katsuhiko, namely Clockwork. In addition, Katsuhiko's katana sword is Sakai's family regalia which he was trained to wield since relatively early age.

✧ Spent a share of his childhood in Japan before travelling the world with his family and settling down in America. Is an incredibly talented physician who once attended the college with Jack, Maddie, Vlad and Ford.

✧ With Maddie insisting, willingly took the role of a godfather to Jasmine and Danny alongside with Ford and Vlad, and showed oneself being a reliable babysitter during siblings' childhood years. In addition, is an uncle-in-law to Dipper and Mabel.

✧ Due to the specifics of his mentality, is fully acceptant of otherworldly creatures being a natural part of the world. Treats ghosts with respect and prefers to reason with them when it's possible rather than throwing a punch basically this but for ghosts lmao.

✧ Was the first to discover the portal accident granted Vlad his ghost powers and has been keeping it a secret alongside with Ford. Found out about Danny becoming the second human/ghost hybrid earlier than Vlad, simply due to being attentive to his godson's and Phantom's at times way too similar mannerisms and behavior.

✧ Is often to have an argument with Vlad in regards to Danny. Supports their godson when it comes to the pursuing of his dreams and just wants Danny's life to be as peaceful as possible, while Vlad believes Danny needs to toughen up and show this teeth more frequently in order to become more withstanding of both the human world and the ghost zone's unpredictable environment.

✧ Is very much 🔪🔪🔪 alongside with Vlad when it comes to Bill and his attempts to get back at Ford. Despite any of their arguing and butting heads, him and Vlad make one hell of battle partners when it comes to protecting people they care deeply about.

-It is truly tragic that Vlad is incapable of interacting with Maddie without hitting on her, because they would CRUSH a Mission Impossible type platonic partnership (with Jack of course) and look great while doing it

Timekeeper's assistants AU

Alright y'all! This is gonna be my info dump post for the Timekeepers assistant Au- buckle up cause it's gonna be a long one!

Inspired by @queendibz post here

The entire purpose of the assistant squad is to keep all the time lines running smoothly- this can range from stopping a world ending event to making sure things misplaced by natural ghost portals get put back into the right time and place.

So First up on the crew list,

Dan:

-Dan definitely isn't a homicidal maniac anymore but he's not 100 percent "redeemed" either.

-I mean he's probably still a bit of sadist but he tries not to be?

-The best description I can give is that he's in recovery, basically.

-So, Clockwork knew that Dan would eventually bust out of the thermos just because it wasn't built to hold a ghost of his power level for a prolonged period of time. But beyond that?? He has no idea about anything in regards to Dan. Since Dan's creation was averted, his timeline doesn't exist anymore. He's a paradox that exists outside of time, and unfortunately, that means he's the one entity in the multiverse that exists in Clockwork's blindspot. There's no way for him to know what Dan's going to do next.

-Anyway, Dan eventually breaks out of the thermos fully intending to Fuck Shit Up, And Clockwork makes a point of informing him that if he leaves the clock tower he will cease to exist. (Like Dan, the tower exists outside of time, so he's safe there.)

-Dan is the first member of the assistant squad. Granted, it took a while for him to come around to the idea of helping Clockwork but he got there eventually.

-Dan is an entity that was born out of the rage and grief of two very broken people and he has so much shit he's working through as a result

-One of the first things he had to do was recognize and accept that he's an entity that's completely separate from Vlad and Danny. He might have all their memories and the weight of their mistakes on his shoulders, and on top of that, the atrocities he himself committed because of them. The first step is realizing that he doesn't have to be defined by the people that made him.

-It's a really fucking difficult thing to do tho and he's got a lot of weird emotions in regards to Vlad, Danny and the Fentons as a result. A near constant identity crisis, self loathing, daddy issues, something that could arguably be called an Oedipus complex, (FUCKING THANKS, VLAD)

-Cannot stand the smell of fast food, it makes him nauseous and the sight of Nasty Burger sauce alone is enough to make him vomit Ectoplasm.

-He's just a hot mess all around y'all

-He tries to keep his interactions with the Danny's as minimal as possible at first bc of this. The first time he meets them in person he shape shifts into Danny like he did in TUE and just pretends to be one of them. Some of them have had interactions with their respective Dan's already and would be super wary of him and probably pretty freaked out otherwise.

-Dan is eventually allowed to leave the clocktower for supervised "Field missions" with the aid of a time medallion to keep him from poofing out of existence, but it takes a while for clockwork to build up that level of trust.

-Dan's shapeshifting ability Actually comes into play a bit on a lot of those missions, since he can Mimic Danny it also makes sense that he'd be able to impersonate Vlad in the same way. Granted he's not incredibly comfortable taking on either of their appearances but it does help him hone his shapeshifting ability to the point where he's able to pick and choose features from both Vlad and Danny and sorta make his own human disguise.

-Most of the time he acts as the eye in the sky from the tower, monitoring for timeline anomalies and then notifying the appropriate member of the assistant squad.

-He has a room under the clock tower that he operates from. I kinda like the idea of there being like, catacombs down there? Anyway he's got all kinds of monitors and view screens and he very rarely leaves. It also doubles as his "living space." He doesn't need to sleep but he's got a big mess of a pillow fort that he crashes in regardless bc sometimes you just NEED to be unconscious for a while. The catacombs are also absolutely full of those little blob ghosts that wander around the zone bc They're attracted to the ecto energy the tower gives off. He's really annoyed by them at first but they grow on him after a while and now he just dotes on them.

-There's a specific throw pillow sized one that likes to hang out in Dan's room a lot and he ended up getting a little over attached to the stupid thing. His name is Dorian. Bc he's a gift.

-SIR THATS MY EMOTIONAL SUPPORT BLOB

-Dan's appearance has changed slightly. He wears his hair loose now and it's kinda just this big fiery mane when it's not contained. His cape is more of a cloak now, it has a hood and he wears it sorta pinned together at the shoulder so the DP logo is covered.

-Dan's relationship with the rest of the Danny's is kinda weird, and a little strained. He has a hard time being around them for very long because, well, he used to sort of be them? Except not really? He does care about them tho, and the last thing he'd want is for one of them to end up like him.

-His relationship with clockwork definitely starts out pretty familial, after he becomes his assistant, anyway. There's room for that to develop into meddling minutes but I'm not entirely sure if I'm gonna go that route yet.

-The Danny's only ever hear his voice for a while before he finally let's them meet him for real, so they end up calling him Charlie for a while as a joke. Cause Ya know. Charlie's angels. Even after Charlie still ends up being his designated name on missions.

Mer! Danny:

-Was recruited bc a lot of the shit that gets sucked through natural portals ends up in a body of water somewhere and when that happens he's on call to retrieve it.

-Is Actually not at all ghostly! Mer Danny's situation is basically the plot of H2O (just add water), or if you haven't seen that, Aquamarine. And by that I mean he's only a merfolk in water.

-He's an electric eel

-His Jack and Maddie are marine biologists, with a particular interest in marine cryptids

-We're taking sea monsters baby!!!

-Not entirely sure how this Danny ended up half mer yet but I'll figure it out, lmao.

-14 years old

-His nickname/ designation is "Moray"

Crown Prince! Danny:

-Nickname/designation is Prince / Princey

-16 years old

-Not allowed to go anywhere in the zone without the Fright knight bc of some ancient ghost law bullshit, so he has a constant babysitter.

-He's next in line bc he sealed away Pariah, but can't take the throne until he is both, A) at least 18 years and B) Completely deceased

-Vlad is his Regent bc he did have a part in the whole sealing the previous king thing, but he's also not completely dead so his power is super limited there.

-As Prince Danny has the crown of fire in his ghost form, although now the name is kinda ironic seeing as it's completely frozen over. It's blue now and it smokes like dry ice.

-As Regent, Vlad has the ring of rage for "safe keeping"

-Vlad and Danny are pretty much constantly at each other's throats, fright knights probably had to shut down more than a few of Vlad's attempts to usurp the crown from Danny through combat.

-Princey deals with the timeline issues that involve the ghost zones' internal / political affairs, and he's gotten very well versed with dealing with the Observants.

Winged! Danny :

-15 years old

-Mallard duck wings

-His Vlad is a swan

-Comes from a family of waterfowl, Jack is a goose, and Maddie is a white swan. Both he and jazz are ducks bc of their grandparents.

-As Fenton his wings are white, like jazz, and as phantom they turn black with a green iridescent sheen.

-He's trans

-Nickname/ designation is inviso Bill. Bc ducks have bills haha get it-

-Ghostly wail?? Nah son he's gotta killer QUACK

-Absolute besties with Mer!Danny/ Moray, sometimes they go swimming together after a mission.

Clone! Danny:

-Physically he's a 12-year-old, but he's only been alive for a few months.

-Alt universe where Vlad manages to stabilize the perfect clone with his own DNA.

-Dani still exists, and the original danny from his time line also rescued the other problematic clones.

-Doesnt like the fact that he's a clone, and very much wants them all DEAD. Bc them running around is a reminder that he's not the real danny.

-Human half looks the same aside from the widows peak and the mallen streak. His ghost half takes after plasmius. Blue skin, and the Hazmat kept it's original white colors.

-Probably has fangs and a forked tounge.

-Not so much a member of the squad as he is someone that they need to be keeping an eye on.

-Does NOT get along with them.

-Dan enjoys making him uncomfortable.

-Designation is Masters / the brat (not to his face tho)

Family Breakfast AU! Danny:

-A BABY

-The boy is a fucking overpowered todler okay. He's an 8 year old.

-The biological son of his Vlad, was born a Halfa. Jack, Vlad and Maddie got their shit together and are in a healthy poly relationship.

-Got separated from Vlad one time in the zone and inadvertently adopted by the assistant squad and clockwork.

-His Vlad is aware of the squad and just. Dad's the crap out of the Danny's as a result. It makes for some..... interesting interactions.

-I can't think of a nickname so I'm just gonna be lazy and say he gets to be the one Tru Danny bc cute little kind privileges lmao.

Full ghost! Danny:

-15 years old, will always look 14.

-Nickname/designation is Toast

-Died in the portal accident and got fucking FRIED.

-He always smells like somethings burning.

-He's really bright and sorta sparks a bit, you can see his bones glowing through the hazmat.

-He still leave the zone to protect his version of amity, but lives with clockwork full time.

Canon Danny (NOT PHANTOM PLANET COMPLIANT) :

-Basically show Danny, except phantom planet never happened fuck you

-Joined the crew after the events of de stabilized

-Also he's trans fuck butch

-Franken! Danny

-Yall remember that Headless Danny Au? This is my take.

-Is Actually 20 years old, but physically stuck at age 14. Bc he's a walking corpse :)

-Came from a timeline that was directly parallel to Full ghost! Danny. He dies in the portal accident, but jack and Maddie are in the lab when it happens and manage to sort of bring him back using a combination of science and freaky ghost junk.

-So he's basically possessing/ stuck inside of his own dead body. Which, is thankfully not rotting or going into rigor mortis bc Ectoplasm is rather similar to formaldehyde, but he's not the most durable thing and bits and pieces fall off from time to time.

-Like his head. For example.

-He's pretty desensitized to it at this point and if he loses a leg after a ghost fight he doesn't see anything wrong with sitting down on the curb of a main street to stich it back on. His being dead isn't exactly a secret.

-Don't ever ask him to "give you a hand" bc he can and will not hesitate to pop one off and Chuck it at you.

-Said hand and any other body part will continue to function just fine even if it isn't attached to anything, btw.

-Nickname/ designation is Adam. Bc. Ya know. that's the name Frankenstein's monster gave itself.

Post Phantom Planet! Danny:

-A very jaded 22 year old who is driven only by spite and enough caffeine to kill a horse

-Very, very tired of the hero thing.

-Being a global celebrity isn't all it's cracked up to be.

-Decided to follow Vlads lead and fuck off to space for a while. Partially to get away from everyone and also partially bc he kinda feels responsible for the fact that the only other person like him and probably floating DEAD in the void somewhere? And yeah Vlad fucked up all on his own but what if he'd tried harder to get through to him things could have been different-

-Joins the crew after a natural portal opens up in space and decides to help out and use clockworks resources to try and track down his Vlad.

-Nickname/ Designation is Polaris, aka the north star.

Fun fact about THE BABYSITTER ‘88 au is that part of it was inspired by an 80s book called “THE GHOST SQUAD BREAKS THROUGH” it has four dead teens (three boys one girl) and fun fun fact about this book, the freaking main characters name is freaking Danny!

Originally the cast were supposed to be teen Vlad, Nicola, Kevin (Skulker) and Penelope

But I change it to teen Ember, Johnny, Kitty and Matt (Skulker)

In the Eldritch Abomination AU, does Vlad have a parent like Danny does? And who is it if so?

Parent rights are much more spread out for Vlad than for Danny, but mostly the Vultures and Vortex are the ones that keep an eye on him. Skulker is mostly just a babysitter.

Note about the Vultures: They are a single collective entity, despite always being referred to in the plural.

For Lady Phantom/Phantom Chloe AUs (or is it just one AU where Marinette and Chloe separately zap themselves in ghost portals?), I usually picture girls who have pigtails/ponytails as humans as having flame-ponytails like Ember in ghost form.

It’s two seperate AUs!

Lady Phantom is a full AU, where instead of Miraculous and Akumas, it’s all Ghosts. The events of DP are Canon, but happened about a decade ago so Danny and friends are in their mid-twenties and when they do meet Lady Phantom’s gang they’re just tired af babysitters.

Phantom Chloé still takes place in the universe of ML, so Ladybug and Chat Noir (and others) fight the Akumas, but sometime post-Miracle Queen that origin story happened. Danny and friends are roughly the same age as the Miracuclass. And will probably have more interaction since Danny and Vlad want to keep an eye on Chloé, but neither can leave Amity Park rn, which leads to Vlad using his money to meddle.

Vlad spotted Jack and Maddie entering the restaurant. Ten minutes late but that was normal for them, so very like the two good college friends he remembered.

He stood and waved them over. Jack’s face lit up with that familiar childlike smile. And Maddie, well, she was just as lovely as ever, just as he remembered her—well, no, something was different—

“Vladdy!” Jack clapped a hand on his shoulder. “We’ve been worried about you, bud!”

“We’re so happy you reached out to us,” said Maddie, rubbing her swelled belly.

“Yes, ah…” Vlad’s eyes darted from her belly to her face. “You—you look—”

Maddie laughed. “Yes, yes, I am pregnant.” She stroked Jack’s arm. “Twenty-eight weeks. It’s a boy.”

A boy. A son. Vlad had imagined one day he’d have a son of his own. He once imagined Maddie would be the mother.

“You must be very excited,” said Vlad.

“Oh, yes.” Maddie’s eyelids fluttered as she continued rubbing her belly. “I’ve always wanted a boy.”

“Is he your first?”

“No, we have a gorgeous baby girl at home,” said Jack. “That’s why we’re late: had to wait for the babysitter to get there.”

“Oh my, so this is your second?” Vlad invited them to take a seat. “We really do have a lot of catching up to do, don’t we?”

As they looked over their menus and then waited for their lunches to arrive, Maddie and Jack told him all about their continued research in the paranormal. Mostly failed attempts to reach the Ghost Zone or at least find a real ghost, but they continued to be optimistic.

Vlad in turn told them about his successful business ventures, the mansion he recently purchased in Wisconsin, and how the Green Bay Packers were being stubborn about letting him purchase them but he wasn’t giving up just yet.

“Are you saying you’re loaded, Vladdy?” Jack’s eyes were huge, his mouth hanging open.

Vlad shrugged. “You could say that.” That was perhaps an understatement at this point, but he wasn’t about to say exactly how he amassed so much wealth in the first place, how he procured his first million. No, he couldn’t tell them the countless people he had to overshadow using his ghost powers to get where he was today.

Ghost powers he had Jack to thank for. Ghost powers he had once hated Jack for. Ghost powers he was now okay with having. At least they were no longer destroying his body.

“Vlad.” Maddie lowered her fork. “If you don’t mind me asking… What happened? After the accident? That was the last time we saw you, and we were both so worried when we never heard from you again.”

“Yeah, your face is looking much better, by the way!” said Jack with a grin. Maddie promptly elbowed him.

Vlad looked down at his plate. He knew this topic would come up, but he hadn’t decided if he wanted to tell them the truth. Perhaps he would just begin and see what happened.

“I thought the...skin condition would clear up on its own at first,” said Vlad cautiously, slowly. “I tried powerful cleanses, looked up regimens, washed my face several times a day. But it only seemed to get worse, and… I was getting worse, too.”

His hand would randomly disappear, his leg would drop through the floor, his eyes would flash red in the mirror.

“I started feeling nauseous all the time. One day I collapsed, and my roommate at the time called an ambulance for me. I just remember waking up in the hospital connected to so many machines. And all the nurses and doctors, they would flinch every time they looked at me. I didn’t even want to see a mirror ever again by that point.”

“Oh, Vlad,” said Maddie softly.

“How long were you hospitalized?” asked Jack.

“A couple months. Until I…” Vlad mulled over his next word carefully. “Escaped,” he said more quietly.

Jack and Maddie reacted just as he expected them to as they exchanged confused glances.

“Until you escaped?” echoed Maddie. “Why did you have to escape?”

Vlad looked around the restaurant before leaning in closer over the table. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to tell you,” he said in a low voice, “but I think maybe you should know. Since you were there when this all started.” He paused. “And because you two are still my friends.”

“What happened?” asked Maddie, also leaning in.

“It’s not a small thing. I haven’t told anyone else about this. It’s hard for me to talk about.”

“What is it?”

“So you have to promise not to tell anyone either. And please try to stay calm.”

“Vlad, tell us already.”

“I’m a ghost.”

Jack and Maddie gave him blank stares.

“Well, part ghost,” said Vlad. “I’m not sure what percentage—haven’t figured that out just yet—but ever since that accident with our proto-portal in university, I’ve had these strange ghost abilities. Powers, you could say.”

“Powers? Ghost abilities? Like what?” asked Maddie.

“Like... I can move through solid objects. I can turn invisible. I can float. You know, typical abilities that ghosts possess.”

“You can really do all that?” asked Maddie breathily.

Vlad again looked around and held up a hand in front of him, turning it invisible as discreetly as he could. Jack and Maddie gasped.

“Incredible,” whispered Maddie.

“I didn’t have much control over it in the beginning.” Vlad lowered his hand. “My arm would disappear unexpectedly or my foot would drop through a stair. And my control over it wasn’t much better in the hospital. It wasn’t long before the hospital staff took notice of my strange abilities.”

“They noticed?” asked Jack.

“Oh, yes. They would try to start an IV line and the needle would go right through my arm. And once, they caught me floating a foot or two off the bed.” Vlad took a drink of water. “But of course, they had already suspected something was strange about me after looking at my bloodwork. They kept detecting traces of something they could not identify.”

“Ectoplasm?” asked Maddie.

“Exactly right,” said Vlad.

“So then what?” asked Maddie. “I’m assuming they wanted to run more tests? I know I would.”

Vlad paused, smiled, stalled for a moment by taking a couple bites of his meal. He absolutely believed she would’ve wanted to run tests, no doubt about that.

Beside her, Jack was enjoying his meal. Maddie hadn’t taken any bites in a while, her plate still mostly full.

“They certainly began talking about tests,” said Vlad. “They discussed sending me off somewhere for more comprehensive testing. Once I heard them mention that the government might get involved, I knew I had to leave.”

He stared at his plate, not wanting to meet Jack’s and Maddie’s gazes for the moment.

“They wanted to make me a specimen,” said Vlad quietly. “I realized they were never going to let me go. I had to escape.”

“How?” asked Jack. “Were you able to get the hang of intangibility?”

“But that wouldn’t stop them from coming for him later,” said Maddie. “They knew who you were, right?”

“You are correct,” said Vlad. “And I knew I couldn’t just use my powers to leave. They would just come for me again. Once I discovered I had the ability to overshadow people and take over their bodies, their minds, I knew what I had to do.”

Maddie softly gasped. “You can do that too?”

Vlad nodded. “Anything a generic ghost can do, I can do. I overshadowed all of the doctors and nurses and staff who had been working with me, altered their memories, changed their directives and plans, convinced them that a Vlad Masters had never been in the hospital at all. And then I left.”

“It was really that easy?” asked Jack.

“Well, it took some thought and coordination.” Vlad smiled. “But yes, it was that easy.”

“Were you no longer sick, then?” asked Maddie.

“Oh, I was still in a great deal of pain, felt nauseous all the time,” said Vlad. “But after I escaped, I did my own research, using my powers to get me into the college’s labs after hours without anyone knowing. I was able to find a way to stabilize myself. I practiced using my powers, controlling and restraining my ghost side.” He rubbed a hand over his now smooth face. “The ghost acne cleared right up once I was able to stabilize. Though by the time that finally happened, I had already lost my friends.” He paused. “Including you two.”

“You didn’t lose us,” said Jack. “We tried to reach you.”

“Yes,” said Maddie. “We were so worried, but you wouldn’t talk to us.”

Vlad lowered his gaze. “I know. And I’m sorry. I just… I was ashamed. And afraid of what was happening to me.”

And it had all been Jack’s fault, if Jack had just been more careful—

“And I guess I was angry too,” murmured Vlad.

“Angry?” asked Jack.

Vlad smiled and finished off his entree, pushing it a few inches away from him. “But that’s all in the past. I feel great now, I’m doing really well, I have so many plans for the future I’m really excited about.”

“Hear, hear,” said Jack, also finishing off his entree.

Vlad leaned back, his muscles unlocking. That hadn’t been so bad. It felt so good to finally share his story, and who better to share it with than his closest friends who also shared his interest in the supernatural? Friends who could understand this part of him better than anyone else could?

Dessert actually sounded like a really great idea.

The server returned to gather their empty plates. But Maddie still hadn’t finished her meal.

“Oh, sorry,” said Maddie, snapping to attention when the server asked about taking her plate. “Could I get a box instead? Thanks.”

“Not hungry today? Or did my story make you lose your appetite?” asked Vlad once the server left.

“No, usually she eats like a horse,” said Jack. “Ever since she got pregnant, I mean.”

“I know. I guess I’m just distracted,” said Maddie.

“Distracted by what?” asked Vlad.

“Distracted by...you.”

Vlad’s chest thumped but he attempted to maintain a straight face.

“What exactly do you know about your ghost powers?” asked Maddie, her volume lowering as she leaned in closer. “Your ghost side? Have you been conducting any research on it?”

“Uh, some, but—”

“You know some about your ghost powers, or you’ve been doing some research on it?”

“Oh, well, yes, I’ve been doing some research, but—”

“So what do you know?”

“Just—still not a lot. I’ve been focusing a little more on my business ventures.”

“Then maybe Jack and I could help.”

Vlad blinked.

Maddie’s whole face lit up as her skin seemed to visibly buzz. “We have our own lab. We bought this wonderful property right here in Amity Park and we fixed up the basement with everything we need.”

“Right, you mentioned that.”

“And you could come over some time—maybe the next time you’re in town—and we could run some tests!”

“Ah—”

“Or we could even do it today, like after we’re done with lunch.”

“Mmm—”

“And we could collect some samples—tissue, hair, blood—take some X-rays, maybe even a psychological evaluation to see if you’ve developed any semblance of a ghostly obsession.”

Vlad held in a scowl. A psychological evaluation? Did she think he was crazy? Like some mad ghost?

She continued on and on, all of her plans to study him, to reach inside him and pull out everything she needed to further her research on ghosts and the paranormal.

She wanted to make him the very thing the hospital staff had whispered about. The fate he had escaped from.

A specimen.

Vlad felt sick the longer she kept talking.

“Maddie,” he interjected.

She didn’t stop.

“Maddie,” he tried again, more loudly this time.

Jack gently nudged Maddie. She straightened up, looking confused before relaxing.

“Sorry, I guess I got carried away,” said Maddie, pressing a couple fingers to her temple and gently massaging it.

“Quite all right,” said Vlad, forcing a smile.

“But will you think about it?” said Maddie. “It would at least be fun for us to do some research together again.”

“I’ll see,” said Vlad.

The server returned with a box for Maddie’s meal and the slices of chocolate fudge cake Jack and Vlad had both ordered. Jack began devouring his immediately. Vlad stared at his piece, not sure if he wanted it anymore.

“Do you think we could replicate it?” asked Maddie.

Vlad raised his eyes. “Hmm? Replicate what?”

“Your accident. With the portal. Do you think we could make that happen again?”

Vlad flinched. “Well, I don’t exactly want to go through that again. It was extremely painful, and I don’t know if I’d survive it a second time.”

“No, not with you, of course,” said Maddie. “With someone else.”

A crumb fell off Jack’s lips as he frowned at her with his cheeks full. Vlad did not move at all.

“What if we could shock someone again with energy from the Ghost Zone and give them ghost powers?” asked Maddie. “Create another ghost hybrid? Do you think that’s possible?”

“I—” Vlad floundered for words. “I don’t see why it couldn’t be replicated, but I do think I just got very lucky to have survived at all. I think that shock would’ve killed most people. If you wanted to replicate it without murdering a bunch of test subjects first, you’d have to find a suitable candidate who has the DNA structure that would be compatible.”

Maddie scrunched her mouth.

“You’d have to do quite a bit of compatibility testing,” said Vlad. “You would want to make absolutely certain that whoever you select would not be killed by not only the shock but the aftereffects. Ideally, you’d want someone who would stabilize immediately after the transformation.” He looked down at his hand; the veins were bulging with what he knew was a mixture of blood and ectoplasm. “Not like me. I wasn’t stable at all at first. I had to save my own life.”

“I bet we could find someone,” said Maddie, drumming her fingers on her pregnant belly. “Don’t you think, Jack? And wouldn’t it be fascinating if we could recreate the incident with a more stable candidate?”

“It definitely would be,” said Jack with a bite of cake in the side of his mouth. “Especially since we have yet to actually see a real ghost, let alone capture one to study. Maybe we just need to make our own to experiment on.”

Jack and Maddie smiled at each other in agreement. Vlad looked from one to the other, not sure if what he was feeling was apprehension or intrigue. He couldn’t deny his own interest in the paranormal, and as long as he didn’t have to be the specimen of interest, then this didn’t seem like a bad idea.

And he did like seeing Maddie so happy and excited. He had always loved her passion.

Yes. That was it. Get her interested in finding a new specimen so she wouldn’t come after him.

Maddie continued drumming her fingers on her belly.
