Eye Movements: The Myths & The Facts
Tumblr media
Eye movements are a very popular topic in society. Sight is, after all, our most used sense. People pay more attention to other peoples' eyes than the rest of their face. Plus, looking people in the eyes is often known as the polite thing to do (the exception being in the cultures where it's polite to look down out of respect for an authority figure). Since we are often looking people in the eyes, we sometimes subconsciously notice certain patterns.
Reading Eyes
Naturally, people like connecting with others, as well as understanding what their behaviours mean, especially what they mean for us. It's a survival tactic built into our brains to protect us from danger, so there is nothing wrong with you if you do so. Due to this desire to understand coupled with the frequency of eye contact, we often attempt to read eyes.
However, most people don't know how to do so, or even which cues are actually important compared to frivolous ones.
The Myths
First of all, let's clear a few things up: 1) you CANNOT determine if someone is lying based on nothing but eye movements, and 2) when someone looks away, it DOES NOT mean they're suspicious. These are common myths that are spread to every amateur body language reader out there. The worst thing you could do would be to accuse an innocent person of something they didn't do. Having said that, here are some more myths about eye reading:
Furrowed brows mean negative emotions: There is nothing more annoying than ten people asking you if you're alright when all you're doing is concentrating. Furrowed brows could mean focus, contemplation, or curiosity as well as distress. Context is everything.
Looking to the left indicates deception: Again, no eye signals can indicate that someone is lying, especially not a simple direction of eye movement.
A person who maintains eye contact is telling the truth: Liars often try to maintain the most eye contact possible to mislead others. Eye contact that is too rigid can often indicate signs of stress (part of the freeze response) or aggression rather than trustworthiness.
Looking away a lot means you're nervous: This is another case of context. Lots of people look away when they are formulating ideas or remembering events. Plus, an unwritten rule is to look away while talking, and to maintain eye contact while listening.
Dilated pupils always mean attraction: Know that pupils dilate in dark rooms, and shrink in bright rooms for better vision and protection. Only consider this sign as attraction if there is no change in lighting.
The Facts:
Although simply reading eyes has its limits, there are a few things you can deduce based on these cues, such as tension, avoidance, focus, faked emotion, and certain thought patterns. Observing a person when they tell stories is a great way to practice noticing these types of signals. Here are some useful tips and cues for reading eyes:
Excessive blinking can signify overwhelm, confusion, or annoyance: This is not to be confused with slow blinking, which is an indicator of nervousness and avoidance.
Eye movements can indicate thought patterns: You can figure out the significance of many different thoughts simply based on eye movement.
Here is a diagram of their meanings:
Tumblr media
Catching false emotions is possible through the eyes: If someone is worried, their eyebrows will move into a concerned position. If someone is happy, the corners of their eyes will crinkle. Anyone purposefully displaying these emotions, but without the cues may be trying to trick you into believing they are genuine.
Duping delight: When people get away with lies, they often have a happy or satisfied look in their eyes that lasts for a split second, called duping delight. However, this is not the only sign you should look for while lie detecting. Context is everything.
Understand the relationship through the eyes: A person looking at your nose or your eyes means to be friendly and sociable. A person looking at your forehead or the top of your head is asserting authority. Finally, a person who constantly looks at your lips or lower is attracted to you. Women are rarely caught doing that last one because they have better peripheral vision than men (they actually do it more often then men, funny enough).
Some Key Reminders
Some patterns go hand in hand and are easy to remember and decipher. Although there are many signs to observe, these are the baseline tactics that everyone can understand:
1. The more the eyes are open, the more the person could be:
interested
attempting to comprehend the situation
liking the situation/thing in front of them
excited
2. The more the eyes are squinted or closed, the more the person could be:
disliking the situation/thing in front of them
annoyed or bored
suspicious
wanting to avoid the situation
3. Anyone giving the "side-eye" look to another person is typically:
hiding their true feelings (bad or good)
hoping the other person doesn't see them watching
hiding intentions or information from them
being wary of them
Body language is an ongoing subject. I hope that this summary helps you to better understand eye movements and what they mean.

Navigating the Complexity: Tips for Effective VB-MAPP Scoring
Navigating the complex landscape of VB-MAPP scoring requires more than just a basic understanding of the assessment. It demands a nuanced approach, incorporating both technical expertise and practical insight to ensure accuracy and effectiveness. As professionals working with individuals on the autism spectrum, mastering the art of VB-MAPP scoring is essential for tailoring interventions and fostering meaningful progress. In this guide, we'll explore key tips and strategies to enhance your VB-MAPP scoring proficiency.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Framework
Before delving into scoring tips, it's crucial to grasp the foundational framework of the VB-MAPP assessment. The VB-MAPP, or Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program, is designed to assess and track the language and learning skills of individuals with autism or related developmental disorders. It comprises various components, including milestones across verbal behavior domains, barriers analysis, and transition assessment.
Tip 1: Familiarize Yourself with the Scoring Criteria
One of the fundamental steps in mastering VB-MAPP scoring is to thoroughly understand the scoring criteria for each component. Take the time to review the scoring guides provided with the assessment materials. Pay close attention to the specific behaviors or skills that indicate mastery within each domain. Familiarity with the scoring criteria will enable you to make accurate judgments and avoid common pitfalls in assessment.
Tip 2: Adopt a Collaborative Approach
Scoring the VB-MAPP is not a solitary endeavor. Collaboration with colleagues, caregivers, and other professionals can provide valuable insights and enhance the accuracy of scoring. Encourage open communication and information-sharing to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual's abilities and challenges. Collaborative scoring sessions can also serve as opportunities for professional development and knowledge exchange.
Tip 3: Prioritize Observation and Data Collection
Effective VB-MAPP scoring relies on thorough observation and data collection. Take the time to observe the individual in various settings and contexts, noting their responses, behaviors, and interactions. Collecting objective data through systematic observation allows for a more comprehensive assessment of their skills and progress. Utilize tools such as behavior tracking sheets or digital data collection apps to streamline the process and ensure consistency.
Tip 4: Consider Contextual Factors
When scoring the VB-MAPP, it's essential to consider contextual factors that may influence performance. Environmental variables, such as sensory stimuli or social cues, can impact an individual's ability to demonstrate certain skills. Additionally, personal factors, including motivation, attention, and emotional state, may affect their responsiveness during assessment. By acknowledging and accounting for these contextual factors, you can ensure a more accurate and holistic evaluation of the individual's abilities.
Tip 5: Focus on Individualized Needs and Goals
One of the key principles of VB-MAPP scoring is its emphasis on individualized assessment and intervention planning. Rather than adhering strictly to standardized benchmarks, prioritize the identification of the individual's unique strengths, preferences, and areas for growth. Tailor assessment strategies and intervention goals to align with their specific needs and aspirations. By focusing on individualized goals, you can maximize the relevance and effectiveness of the VB-MAPP scoring process.
Tip 6: Continuously Monitor Progress and Adjust Strategies
Scoring the VB-MAPP is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of monitoring progress and adjusting strategies accordingly. Regularly review assessment data and track changes in the individual's skills over time. Identify areas of improvement as well as potential barriers to progress. Be flexible and adaptive in your approach, modifying intervention strategies as needed to support the individual's continued growth and development.
Conclusion
Navigating the complexity of VB-MAPP scoring requires dedication, expertise, and a commitment to individualized practice. By following these tips and strategies, you can enhance your proficiency in VB-MAPP scoring and, more importantly, make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Remember, effective scoring is not just about assigning numbers—it's about understanding, supporting, and empowering individuals to reach their full potential.
