Fan fic rec Fridays
I’m posting about the fics I enjoy reading (almost) every Friday. In no particular order, let’s dive in, shall we?
First up we have “Call my Bluff” by Bradleymartin. (Star Trek: AOS, Kirk/Bones, 36K, Complete). A college AU where Bones is in med school, and Kirk is in a fraternity. The crew is all here, and ready to be found family. Oh, and watch how Bones and Kirk get around to finally admitting they like each other. Like, like-like each other.
Next, “A Matter of Timing” by Princess of Geeks. (Stargate SG-1, Daniel/Jack, 9K, Complete). Jack and Daniel finally talk, pull their heads outta their asses, and start something between the two of them.
Next, “(a silent prayer) Like Dreamers Do” by Chicklette. (Marvel, Bucky/Steve, 12K, Complete). Look, I love me a good soulmate AU, and this one delivers. It’s got angst, a sweet ending, and some good world building. There’s a reason it has near 3K in kudos.

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (18)
Hello everybody!! It's been an interesting week. Despite fandom drama and horrific hockey performances, I hope you all are having a good one. I am currently posting this from the beautiful Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper National Parks here in the Rocky Mountains. It's been a lovely road trip to make up for having to cancel our trip to Mexico, Hawaii, and NYC this year.
It was my birthday this week - I made a few changes to my online experience the past few months and it was a very interesting experiment. I may muse on that in a later post - but I do want to say thank you to all of you who sent asks or messages - here, on Facebook, and on Instagram. It was a lovely day. I felt very loved, despite turning a very old number. Lol.
Also - given the last few days, I took the opportunity to reread a few fics this week that may not be to everyone's taste - but that I have always loved - and they reminded me how much I love the fictional version of two very real individuals so much more than the actual people. Such an interesting epiphany. Another reason to never want to "meet your heroes" - and a stark confirmation of my "regular people with an irregular job" mantra. I'm grateful for that insight. And for the wonderful friend who wrote such beautiful and poetic works.

The first time I saw her, I saw the back of her. Two French braids all the way down her back, tied off in pink and ending in golden ringlets. Her hair looked white in the morning sun. She was in the space between our houses, sitting on one of the rocks that lined the lake.
“Hi,” I said.
She turned around, looking shocked to see me. She was around my age, maybe a little younger. She was pretty, with her blonde hair and big blue eyes. There weren’t any girls in my school that pretty.
“I’m Harry,” I said.
She smiled, and it made me warm like the sun behind her. She told me her name then. I don’t remember it anymore.

Simon feels like he’s burning. He can barely breathe, his throat feels like sandpaper, and his head is pounding. He has never felt this miserable, like, ever. Not counting that time he was buried six feet under and came out on the other side as a vampire. But, who's counting?

Simon had chosen Clary over the Night Children because he had been convinced that it was the right choice. Because she had always been the right choice. His only choice. Simon realised how naive he had been but it was too late for this now. He had betrayed the ones he should have sided with, the ones he needed, and he was paying the price for it by being tortured. Aldertree wanted information about the clan and the hotel but so far Simon had managed to keep quiet and not reveal any of the little knowledge he actually had. How he managed to keep his mouth shut while the laser burnt deep marks into his flesh, he didn't know.
The scent of burnt flesh was stuck in his nose hours after getting back to his room, his body heavy with exhaustion but unable to fall asleep due to the searing pain radiating off of every fresh burn embedded into his skin. He still didn't tell the others about it and did his best to hide the marks from them because he didn't want to cause any more trouble. Because that was probably what would happen if Clary found out about what was going on.

"Raphael must have been here as well. Did he--" Simon didn't dare finish the assumption, his voice cracking and steps coming to a stop in the middle of the room that smelled of nothing but death. Dread pooled low in his stomach, causing it to churn and constrict with the rising panic in his chest. Raphael had been here, of course he had. The vampires had joined the attack and Raphael would never send his clan into battle without being at the front himself, leading them.
"Simon, come on," Jace called but Simon's eyes kept on scanning the bodies, knowing fully well that he wouldn't spot any of the vampires because they hadn't left a body, only piles of ash that scattered in between the bodies of the other fallen Downworlder. One of these piles of ash was Raphael, his former leader, the man he had betrayed and the one Simon had developed feelings for somewhere along the way. He hadn't actually realised falling for Raphael until after the betrayal and the actual intensity of his feelings hadn't hit him before right now.

He's lost in the ecstasy - the exhilarating combination of Simon's scent and taste. The close presence of him.
The tempting rush of blood in his veins that Raphael can hear and smell. He imagines storming into the room and kissing him just to show him what it feels like to truly ache for someone but that would be foolish.

Raphael wracks his brain to think of a response. “Is that why you’re drunk?”
Simon frowns and slouches down in the bed. “That’s called ‘changing the subject.’”

A feeling of unease creeps up Raphael's spine when he doesn’t find his fledgling upon his first cursory glance. His eyes scan the room a second time, drink held tightly, but forgotten, in his hand. He cocks his head, desperate to catch the sound of a laugh or a word of Simon’s, but he hears nothing. He sorts through the noises around him as he inhales, searching for the familiar scent of caramel. He stiffens when he hears it, unsure if it was real or not. But then he hears it again a moment later and the glass falls from his fingers to break into pieces on the floor.
OR a visiting clan leader assaults Simon when Raphael is distracted. Raphael rushes to protect Simon.
