The BBMAs Just... Gave Up (Or: CONGRATULATIONS BTS, WBK)
This show does not even start for three hours and change but Billboard really said "fuck it we can't beat a whole ass pissed off ARMY so HERE FINE THEY WON SOME STUFF OKAY DAMN"
And win some stuff they did. You go, BTS.
Top Duo/Group
Top Song Sales Artist
Top Selling Song
So much for chart manipulation or sales bots or whatever the hell those crusty racist fucktards were tryna throw at Namjoon. I hope they loved that article last year because they got En Vogue'd HARD by us AND OUR MENS SO THERE EAT IT BBMAs.
This brings the total of BBMAs for BTS to twelve. And I swear to all that's holy, it better get 'em some traction in the Korean legislature because they are ON A TIME CRUNCH OKAY and I don't know how many more awards they need to earn.
I wasn't planning to watch anyway but maybe Billbored is hoping some of us will tune in for the acceptance videos. Like they won't be on youtube an hour after broadcast.
Congratulations, gentlemen. You EARNED those. Add 'em to the bag. Or the wall(s). Or throw 'em out. You're always number one to us.

Soon the Grammy noms will be announced BPP. Do u hv any predictions on how BTS will do? I am keeping my expectations on the ground even in hell lol. Will just enjoy the pleasant surprise if they get nominated for anything lol so i won’t feel as bad if they get 0. Will be bitter for past exp regardless

Hi Anon,
(For anyone who isn’t aware, my general opinion on BTS and the Grammys is linked in my pinned Masterlist)
When BTS had their Festa dinner in June this year, I decided to do two things:
1. Check out of any Grammys conversation going forward. Like I’ve said before, BTS has shown that dying institution (Grammys) that the best and most lucrative lifeline they have is to engage with k-pop fandoms, and I’m certain that’s exactly what we’ll see over the next few years. Imagine what it would do for their ratings if they could bait not just one but several actively engaged fandoms at once. The Recording Academy would frankly be stupid to let such an opportunity pass over them. Just as in previous years, I have zero expectations for the Grammys and BTS. In fact I have higher expectations for another k-pop group I won’t mention here, and that’s not because I think the quality of music is higher, it’s more a consequence of the frequency with which I’ve seen their American partners represented in the voting academy. When BTS announced the My Universe collaboration with Coldplay last year, at the time I thought this was one way to land a nomination. Now I’m less confident in both Coldplay and BTS’s chances, together and separately.
2. A second thing I decided to do was to stop explaining and/or defending BTS’s music, and to practically discount any external metric placed on their music. Not that I was going out of my way to do that before, and I might be sentimental saying this, but when BTS named their anthology album Proof, and then during the dinner they detailed exactly how much blood, sweat, and tears they poured into creating a discography that has changed the course of an entire country’s scope of soft power and undeniably impacted millions of people, I decided to just say fuck it.
Say whatever you want about BTS, the fact is there is no group on the planet right now being talked about more than BTS, and this has been the case for at least 5 years. There is no musical group on the planet right now with the thematic diversity, and complementary contribution as BTS, for example when you consider the Connect initiative, MN Dance Company, UN and APAC contributions.
I keep saying, k-pop is a lot of things, many of them silly, but this is also the most hyper-competitive music industry in the world - a rags to riches story here is built different. For BTS completely dominating for several years in spite of active sabotage from within and without? They are built different.
BTS won’t remain at the top forever, in fact because of how kosher their rise to the top has been, they’ve essentially ensured their formular is easily replicated and have basically built their own decline into the formula.
I find it a little beautiful to be honest. Like if this were a simple sonata musical form, we’d be in the phase of tension and development right now, and when I think of what that means for the recapitulation, the Grammys just seems like the most irrelevant thing on the planet.
So lol, yeah I’m kinda over explaining that to k-pop commentators who refuse to accept that reality, nor caring what a notoriously racist institution thinks about that music.
All that said, pragmatically, many people still highly value what the Grammys has to say. Their cheques still do cash out. For non-American artists, a Grammy nomination and win still matters significantly, and if BTS or any Asian artist pursues that recognition, I completely understand. But personally, I’ve checked out.
