yes, doctors suck, but also "the medical ethics and patient interaction training doctors receive reinforces ableism" and "the hyper competitive medical school application process roots out the poor, the disabled, and those who would diversify the field" and "anti-establishment sentiment gets applications rejected and promotions requests denied, weeding out the doctors on our side" and "the gruesome nature of the job and the complete lack of mental health support for medical practitioners breeds apathy towards patients" and "insurance companies often define treatment solely on a cost-analysis basis" and "doctors take on such overwhelming student loan debt they have no choice but to pursue high paying jobs at the expense of their morals" are all also true
none of this absolves doctors of the truly horrendous things they say and do to patients, but it's important to acknowledge that rather than every doctor being coincidentally a bad person, there is something specific about this field and career path that gives rise to such high prevalence of ableist attitudes

Pop Star Wars AU: Waking
Drabble set in this au which I wrote way back a few weeks ago.
Back then, I had only recently decided to look up my tumblr password for a third attempt at being an appreciative fandom community member instead of just trying to think really hard at internet strangers, and maybe shout into the void a little. (But there’s like, several people here now??? How did you even find me on the internet? )
Anyway I have since learned how to spell Anakin’s name and insert links. Also that if you resize your window while typing directly into tumblr everything disappears.
Self Indulgent Crack Pop Star Wars Time Travel Fixit (star wars au no 3):
After several years of exile in the Jundland Wastes, Ben Kenobi had not quite finished mentally unpacking the decades of mistakes, grief, and failure that had led him to the desert. It was the work of a lifetime, and some days were harder than others. But after several forays in and out of alcoholism, spice addiction, and every other form of geographically-accessible self-destruction, he could at least say that some days were easier. 
The process was no doubt made more difficult by the abject solitude. Unlike the chaotic years that constituted the fall of the Republic, he had all too much time to think, and no one around to share his thoughts with. He closed his eyes in the dark of his hut, thoughts drifting between past and future. 
The past was as ugly and lovely as ever. The larger future didn’t look much better, but he could find some joy in the thought of tomorrow and fresh bantha milk when the herd roamed near. Owen was always much less begrudging of his presence when he came with an offering, and Beru would likely invite him to stay for noon meal where he would share in fresh cheese as Luke rambled about his plans to fix-up a junked speeder bike.
The thought of Luke’s happiness at the treat allowed him enough peace of mind to meditate more deeply.
He carefully broke off a piece of unfair-bitterness from his larger loving-grief. The bitterness he released into the force. The grief he turned over and soothed until its edges dissolved. He accepted it, now smoother if not smaller, laying it to rest alongside his hard-earned wisdom and unfinished poetry.
Tired, but fractionally lighter, Ben Kenobi drifted to sleep.
He opened his eyes to the first rays of daylight peeking in his temple chambers.
The room was intimately familiar. For a few years they were Ashoka’s, on the rare occasion she found herself temple-side and in want of privacy but not complete solitude. For a solid decade before her, the chambers were Anakin’s, though he was quick enough to accept the common room couch when Ashoka entered their life. And before that...they were his. That was his model rocket on the shelf, and his astronomical mobile hanging from the ceiling, and his robes scattered on the floor, though they hadn’t been arranged as such in this room since his apprenticeship with Qui-Gon. He sat up. 
Glad he had put energy into meditation last night, he used the lingering clarity of mind to try and work through possible explanations. 
Vivid Dream? No a quick pinch to his inner elbow debunked that, as well as the fact that the morning taste in his mouth was more the minty tang of denti-cleaner, rather than the saltiness of dried meat which he had grown accustomed to.
Hallucinogenic mushroom flashback? Possible, though it still wouldn’t explain the detail of physical sensations he felt, running his hand from the temple-spun linens on his bed to the warm-carved wood of his bedside table. He stood and did a perfect forward flip in place. Shockingly his knees didn’t ache at impact, but a drug induced hallucination of this intensity would have some sort of impact on his equilibrium, and he felt perfectly balanced, at least physically.
Force vision seemed most likely. Sinking into cross-legged meditation, he gradually lowered his mental shields. There was no whisper of Vader or Palpatine anywhere near Hutt space at this time, so the risk of reaching out was both manageable and necessary. Rather than the pure energy he personally associated with intense visions, he felt gradients of light, echoing ripples of emotions, and the unique solidity of force-imbued stone walls.
Heart beginning to race as reality set in, Ben concluded that he was, indeed, in the Jedi temple on Courascant. Even if he had suffered a complete psychotic break, his force sense couldn’t lie with such crystal clear detail. Confused unreality mixed with images of the past and future, sure. But this was the temple. It just was. 
He couldn’t make sense of it. Even if he had somehow been found, drugged, and transported to the heart of the empire, the rooms as he sensed them didn’t exist anymore. The contents were lost or burnt, the stone walls destroyed and rebuilt into a wing of the Imperial Palace.
Obi-Wan sank deeper into the force and reached out further, searching for he answers. In general, the force felt light, the shroud of the darkside was a hazy irritation in the distance, not a smothering blanket. The manifold wounds in the force formed by senseless war and destruction were absent. Also gone were the tang of grief and loss that he had begun to associate with the temple’s signature even before- even before the purge.
The temple was also full to the brim with tens of thousands of lights in the living force. He reached out to them incredulously, nudging many just to feel a living, sentient response. The last time he remembered feeling so many Jedi all in the temple at the same time was...well, when he still lived in this room. The nearest living force sensitive presence was achingly familiar, though notably and unquestioningly living. He could feel the presence moving nearer and retreated, pulling himself fully back into his body.
The only explanation that fit was that he had suddenly, miraculously, inexplicably traveled back in time. 
He half ran to his closet, opening the door with a yank to reveal a full length mirror. A once-familiar, 25-year old padawan stared back with visible shock. Of course his knees didn’t hurt, this body hadn’t yet been broken and abused by knighthood, war, and Tatooine. His hands examined the smooth chin, the unwrinkled forehead, and even the terrible, terrible haircut.
Obi-wan startled at a knock at his door, freezing in place. 
“Padawan?” Came Qui-Gon Jinn’s voice softly, “I don’t intend to pull you out of meditation prematurely, but is there a particular reason you were sprawling over the temple this morning? You startled me somewhat. To be perfectly honest, I think you might have alarmed a few people around the temple, I’ve already received messages from council telling me to reign in my padawan before he hurts himself.” 
Qui-Gon sounded more amused than reprimanding, and he paused, clearly waiting for an answer. 
Obi-Wan’s jaw locked up. What could he say? How could he even to begin to explain what had happened? He sank to floor, head pressed to the ground and tears silent streaming down his face. All he could do was offer to the force were words, the feelings could come later Thank you. Thank youThankyouthankyouTHANKYOU. 
For whatever reason, the force had granted him a second chance. Regardless if it was intended as punishment, gift, or inexplicable chance, he would build a better future than the one he left behind. 
“Padawan?” Qui-Gon knocked again, sounding concerned, “Are you alright? If you don’t answer I’m going to have to come in there.”
And all at once he had flipped back to not enough time to think and too many people needing his attention.
Obi-Wan managed to open his mouth to call out some meaningless assurance, intent on gaining more time to process the fantastical situation. Much to his surprise, what came out was a strangled, keening sob. Qui-Gon burst through the door. 
Obi-Wan realized, with a little embarrassment, that he was curled up practically into a ball on the floor, tears streaming in a shocking waste of water. It was probably not the most dignified, nor the most reassuring position for Qui-Gon to walk in on. 
Qui-Gon rushed to his side, pulling him up by the shoulders to frantically look him over. “What happened?” he demanded, “Are you hurt? Did something go wrong while you were meditating and you were trying to reach out for help?”
Obi-Wan smiled at the barrage of questions. He had almost forgotten that on the rare occasions when Qui-Gon’s perfect Jedi serenity broke, he became somewhat counterproductively intense. 
“I’m alright, Master,” he tried to say, but what came out was more of a croaking, “MNNrlerR.” 
This predictably, only increased Qui-Gon’s concern.
To Obi-Wan’s deep consternation, he was dragged by Qui-Gon to the healer’s wing. He remained quiet during the examination, not wanting to risk whatever was compromising his ability to speak. It could be readjusting to his younger body, or a manifestation of the admittedly great emotional shock he was still experiancing. Or simple lack of practice- it had been several weeks since he had last heard the sound of his own voice, from a certain point of view.
After finding no physical cause for concern, Master Vyr asked Qui-Gon to wait outside.
“Padawan Kenobi?” The Tortugan healer asked gently. “Your Master seems quite insistent that something is wrong. Would you like to discuss what the problem seems to be?”
Obi-Wan cleared his throat and was relieved when his voice came out smooth and under his control, “I’m alight, Master. I apologize for disruption. I experienced a... particularly strong vision when I woke up this morning, and temporarily lost control over myself. I’m already feeling more stable. I believe I simply need to meditate on what I’ve seen. My master unfortunately came in while I was dealing with some of the emotional aftermath.
“I see,” Vyr responded. “Did you experience this vision before or after your expansive foray into the force? I understand a surprising swath of the temple felt your presence press against them this morning.”
“I reached out after,” Obi-Wan admitted. “My vision was...particularly dark. I felt the need to ground myself with the presence of other Jedi. I’ll make certain to apologize to anyone I may have startled.”
Eventually he was cleared with the strict instruction to stick with shallow meditation for the next few days as well as a strong recommendation to seek out Master Yoda, Sifo-Dryfas, or one of the other Master known to experience visions. 
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan walked back to their quarters together in a peaceful quiet. It wasn’t until the door clicked behind them that Qui-Gon rounded on his padawan.
“What vision could possibly have left you in such distress?”
Obi-Wan walked to the kitchenette to make tea, stalling before answering. “You have always told me to stay focused on the present, Master”
Qui-Gon frowned. “Yes, however this...vision seems to have altered you somehow. You are grieved by it.”
“Yes. But what I grieve may never come to pass.” 
It won’t come to pass. I might not know his every tool, but I do know Sideous’s biggest secret, and I WILL stop him.
“Will you not tell me what you saw?” Qui-Gon asked, sounding somewhat hurt.
Obi-Wan poured the hot water carefully, feeling torn. If he told Qui-Gon everything... would he believe him? Perhaps, eventually but...what would become of Anakin, still just a boy? And the moment he knew of Palpatine’s evil...he knew Qui-Gon. He would favor the direct approach, underestimating the sheer breadth of the trap the sith had laid (Obi-Wan himself lived through it and only began to understand long after it had closed).
“I saw...a great shadow fall over the republic.”
He sat at the table, relishing in the simple pleasure of pouring a cup for Qui-Gon and himself from a shared pot.
Qui-Gon cradled his mug in his hands. “I see. Nothing specific?”
“Your death. At the hands of a tool of darkness. You ran ahead...” Obi-Wan took a scorching sip to stop himself. “It was foolish. Unnecessary. And I was forced to fight alone without you.
Qui-Gon set the tea down to stroke his beard in thought. “Well. I have no great desire to die. While I make no promises, I will endeavor to avoid leaving you behind ‘unnecessarily.’”
“Thank you,” Obi-Wan replied, over sincere. 
They drank in peaceful silence. It was interrupted by a shrill noise from Qui-Gon’s comm.
“I’ve just received a personal request from the Chancellor to immediately assist in negotiations with a Trade Federation blockade around Naboo. Are you feeling up to it?”
“You know, I think I am”

Summary: You wandered into Red Grave City to warn the “Legendary Devil Hunter” of a certain… negative shift in the area’s energy. It was an energy you knew to be demonic, and it grew stronger by the day. But on your way to meet with the intermediary, a noisy bird caught your attention. A noisy bird that would bring you to a frail man on the brink of falling apart.

“People who come asking for demon extermination… most of them tend to either lie or exaggerate,” Dante began slowly, fiddling with his fingers. “I’m not that petty to get mad about it every single time. Lie if you want to, I’ll kill that demon regardless…” The devil hunter paused. “But you’ve got to pick better names for stories you come up with, you know?”
A deep shiver went down your spine causing you to flinch. This aura is overwhelming. From the moment you entered the building, you could smell that the man wasn’t purely human, but you never would’ve guessed this was how strong his demonic side was. From your peripheral, it appeared V was feeling the same chills as you.
“It’s fine if you doubt me,” V said after a moment. “It will become apparent once Redgrave is demonised.”
You released your tension through a sigh as Dante seemed to calm himself back down, though you couldn’t help but notice his expression of disbelief. This demon--Vergil--must have been one he’s encountered before.There was little point in speculating though, you did what you came to do and delivered the warning as did V.
Turning around, you noticed him staring at a picture of a woman on Dante’s desk. You quirked your brow as he grimaced and walked away from it with a “tch.” What a strange man.
“Thank you Dante,” you turned to the Devil Hunter once more and gave a short bow. His blue eyes only glanced at you before he nodded in response. “Let’s be off then,” you quietly said while taking V by the arm.
A brisk wind blew past as you exited the building. You shuddered and rubbed your arms to warm them up. V placed a hand on your shoulder. It was done a bit awkwardly, but there was a warmth and comfort to it that made your expression soften. “I’m staying here in Redgrave,” you declared.
“As am I,”  he reciprocated.
“We should stick together then, hm?” You laughed, “Or is that too forward of me?” The suggestion did seem to genuinely surprise the man.
“I don’t think I’m particularly great company.”
“I’m not sure that I know what good company is anyways,” you shrugged.
“You can obviously see that I’m the best fucking company,” and with that, Griffon was once again nestled in your hair. You reached up and used your fingers to ruffle his feathers a bit. Huh, they’re actually quite soft.
“Yes Griffon, I am aware that you are the epitome of camaraderie.” Even in the dark, you could see V roll his eyes.
“See, Shakespeare? This is the type of compliment you should be giving m--”
V shoved his cane in the bird’s mouth. “Not a chance.” He then said your name. The amount of people who ever knew your actual name could be counted on your fingers, so your heart lurched a bit at the sound. “Let’s stick together.”
“Mm,” you agreed. “It’s a shit place, but I did manage to scrounge up some extra cash and afford a motel the other day.” Griffon made a sound as close to a whistle as his strange beak  could make and promptly received a flick in the eye from you.
“What the fuck was that for!” He squawked.
“Oh you know goddamn know what that was for,” you pointed your finger in his face. A candid chuckle came from V, and it warmed your cheeks up. “Amazing, I didn’t realize you could be that cute,” you patted him on the back. Before he could respond, you began to walk towards the motel. “It’s this way,” you beckoned. And so he followed. Even Shadow decided to manifest, perhaps even shape-shifting, demon cats like to stretch their legs.
The trip wasn’t a long one and you were soon unlocking the door. Griffon and Shadow busted in before you could even step past the threshold.
“What a luxury!” the chatterbox exclaimed. You were thoroughly amused watching him fly in circles, even Shadow began to circle for a comfy spot on the bed.
“Welcome to my humble, temporary abode. Considering that this place probably isn’t… the most cared for, I understand if you want to keep the shoes on. I have a feeling you’re a little sensitive about mess considering the burger situation earlier today.”
“While I don’t relish being called sensitive, I suppose you’re not wrong,” V sighed. You also realized that the room was rather small, big enough to fit only the bed and a little bathroom with a cramped shower. There wasn’t even floor space.
“Aaand it looks like we’ll all be sharing the bed,” you looked away sheepishly. “But first, I’m going to shower. I reek like residual demon blood from holding you.”
“I’ll go after then,” he nodded. “I probably smell worse than you.”
“Yeah, you absolutely do,” you glanced over your shoulder. Judging by the eruption of laughter from Griffon, someone found your comment to be amusing. You began undressing as you made your way to the bathroom, eventually shutting the door behind you.
The hot water hitting your skin eased all the weird feelings inside of you. This was the longest amount of time you spent with someone in years. Not only was that a cause of unease, but V was also an eccentric character. There were moments where he was near impossible to read--not to mention his connection to the demonic entities and a deep understanding of this emerging problem.
You ended up sitting down as you worked on washing your hair, but you decided against showering too long since you had another person waiting to clean up. After toweling off, you changed into a t-shirt and shorts that you luckily brought. You knew once your head hit that pillow, you’d be out for the night. A lot had happened. “You’re free to shower V,” you let him know upon walking out of the bathroom. He observed you with a strange look on his face, which made you realize that you were holding the dagger from your boot in your hands. “Ah, I keep this on me for obvious reasons.”
“It’s quite intricate,” V noted as he began to get up, and he was right. It was ornate with a hilt of blue and gold. “I’ll try to not be too long.” You waved him off and jumped onto the lumpy mattress, being careful not to puncture the bed. It shocked you that both Shadow and a chatty bird like Griffon appeared to be sound asleep. That’s kinda adorable. You took your half of the bed, tucking yourself in and getting as comfy as you could in that room. Consciousness left you swiftly once your eyes closed.
You found yourself lying in a patch of dewy grass, groggy and with a pulsing headache. Turning your head, you saw vicious flames destroying a beautiful home. “What a shame,” you murmured as you slowly rose up from the ground and massaged your temples. You hugged your knees and watched the dance of orange and red with the sounds of crackling. Funny how fire was so utterly destructive, yet full of the warmth you reluctantly craved.
A scent assaulted your nostrils. It was a scent that could only mean demons. You whipped your head around to find the source. There were demons of bone, carrying scythes… and there was a boy with white hair getting surrounded by them. “Oh shit!” You began to sprint as fast as your body could take you and began to pull paper talismans from your pocket.
The scythe was coming down and even from a distance, you could see the boy’s face full of fear. “No fucking way,” you yelled and slapped down the seal. The demon’s body concaved and turned to dust. You took the little boy by the shoulders and searched for wounds. A bloodied cut on his forehead stained some of his silver hair. You wore bandages around your hands to hide some scarring, but what did it matter at that moment. Tearing it off, you quickly got into taking care of the bleeding. Luckily it was small and quick to heal up and away. He also didn’t appear to have any other physical injuries. You picked up his little, shivering body. “We have to go,” you urged and brushed his bangs back.
“I can’t go,” he sobbed out, though you could see he was straining to remain strong. “My mom and brother are going to come out. I have to wait for them.” You turned once more to the house. It was consumed by fire and black smoke. There was no way anyone was coming out of there.
“We need to get you to safety okay? I’ll go grab them after I ward the demons away from you, okay?” The boy’s blue eyes, stained with fear, bored into you until he finally nodded. “I’ll keep you here so you can see.” And with that, you grabbed your dagger and sliced open your palm. You gently placed it into the dirt and began to recite words from a language long forgotten. Rays of divine light began to surround the boy.
But it would not be finished. Your body collapsed before you could close the gap, and you could see demons lurking to exploit that whole. You attempted to reach forward and finish what you started. The boy called out for you, afraid of all that was going on around him. Your fingertips nearly touched until your limbs began to disintegrate into puffs of dark clouds.
“Live.”
Your eyes snapped open and your chest pounded. What an awful fuckin’ dream. You examined yourself, relieved to see that all your body was fully intact.
“What is it?” A jolt of adrenaline shot through you until you remembered you were not alone in the room.
“Oh... V. You scared me,” you mumbled sheepishly, “I forgot you were there.” You flopped back down onto the pillow. He offered a groggy apology that you waved away. “Not your fault, I’m just a little on edge from a dream.” You buried yourself deeper into the covers but couldn’t stop shivering, so you slowly inched closer to the inside of the bed.
V, who noticed the movements, looked at you strangely. “I’m really fucking cold,” you explained, slightly embarrassed. “Just trying to mooch a little more of your body heat without throwing myself onto you.”
“I know a sure way for you two to get warmer real quick,” Griffon mockingly crowed from on top of the bed frame. You swiftly reached your hand up and plucked out one of his feathers. “Shit! I’m just saying!” He pecked your hand away so you couldn’t grab another feather.
“Just be quiet already,” V grumbled. There was a pause in the room. “I don’t care if you get closer,” he eventually offered in the darkness of the room. It was an offer you took immediately and soon enough, the two of you were packed side to side under the blanket. Both of you were stiff from the unfamiliar contact, but if you were honest with yourself, it was nice. Sharing the warmth with another person was something you always yearned for as a child. Perhaps Griffon understood the sentiment because he quickly plopped himself between your heads.
Lucky for you, you were still exhausted, so the awkwardness of the situation didn’t prevent you from passing out yet again.
There were no more dreams that night. You woke to dried drool on your chin, messy hair, and V sitting up and reading his book.
“Rise and shine princess!” Griffon chirped.
“Ugh, please don’t give me a headache upon waking up,” you groaned, earning a cackle from the demon. After stretching in bed for a bit, you finally stood up.  “I can already sense that I look disgusting, I’m gonna clean up.”
It didn’t take long for you to do the basics of brushing hair, washing your face off, and brushing your teeth. What did take time was re-bandaging select areas of your body--a hand, a calf, your abdomen--lest you get even stranger looks from people. It was impossible for V to have not seen though while you undressed the night before and while you slept. In fact, you took note that he was actually considering the bandages and clothes you were wearing, as if he noticed something.
“Do you have something to ask me about?” He considered your question for an irritatingly long time. “Just come out with it,” you rolled your eyes. “I don’t care.”
“You have a lot of scarring and markings all along your body,” V commented.
“Indeed I do.”
“I don’t understand why you hide it,” he shrugged.
“I’d prefer not to attract the stares of others with scars and tattoos that mark a treacherous past.”
“Scars indicate power and strength.”
You couldn’t contain your burst of laughter. “If only others thought like you! With the amount of shit I got going on, no one would try to fuck with me!” V let a smirk out as well. “But hey, how is your body feeling today?”
“Weak, but that’s normal,” he clearly spited that fact.
Making your way closer, you put a hand on his chest. “Your energy is a lot more stable than it was when I found you. But it could use some support. Can I help?”
“I’ve always loathed the help of others. I hate this sense of powerlessness, but I don’t wish to die,” V stated. You took that as the go-ahead. With a deep breath, you once more began to pour pieces of yourself into the man. The stone within the ring you treasured shifted from blue to white, as it was so intricately intertwined with your life.
You could feel V shift underneath you. “I’m sorry, this must be uncomfortable for you.”
“It’s okay. It doesn’t hurt, and I will do what it takes to survive. I will endure whatever till that demon is gone.” You hummed in understanding.
“Your body should be good for now,” you pulled away.
“Thank you,” V said softly while retying his shirt.
“Hey, thanks from the whole gang! If Shakespeare dies, we die too!” By the grimace on V’s face, you presumed that Griffon revealed a bit more than he would’ve liked.
“Well, along with the rules of the quid pro quo I laid out, I suppose I should say something that my life is linked to, yeah?” Those dark green eyes looked at you inquisitively. “If this ring here shatters,” you put your hand out to him so he could see, “I’m donezo.” The sentence came out rather matter-of-factly and without feeling despite it being about your demise. “Aaand if you wish to know more about that, you gotta let me know something,” you winked.
“I’ll let you know when I think of something,” V replied competitively.
“You two or oh so interesting and all, but what hijinks are we up to today?” Griffon butted in.
“What does the little chicken wish to do today?”
He narrowed his eyes at you but ignored the jab. “Those cheesy circle things,” he declared.
“Pizza?” You tilted your head.
“Yeah, that! Pizza!”
You turned out your pockets to see how much money was left. It was a couple dollars and some rogue coins. “It appears that we’ll have to go ‘earn’ some money again.”
“You mean fucking some more people up?” The little bird seemed quite excited at the prospect.
“There’s that, but there’s probably some less damaging routes we can go.”
“Boo.” Griffon said before dissipating.
“We’ll need to find a shitty bar first,” you told V and began tying your boots back on.
“Why a bar?” He didn’t seem to relish the idea.
“I know they’re full of scumbags, but those scumbags are also dumbasses who don’t know how to keep their money safe. Trust me,” you added.
“So you’re proposing that we steal,” V replied skeptically.
“Oh I’m sorry, is that too lowly for you?” The man’s expression tightened at the taunt.
“Whatever,” he waved away whatever argument was about to begin. “Lead us and do what you will.”
The two of you walked out of the room back into the sun. The search for a trashy hangout was afoot. Small talk ensued between you and V, but nothing all that engaging. It ended up falling into a silence--not that you minded. The walk wasn’t too long anyways, cesspool bars were always aplenty in the back alleys of cities.
“That one.” You pointed to an “establishment” called The Cat Trap. It featured the name in neon pink lights and the sexy silhouette of a woman. The face V made was if you just shoved a sour lemon in his mouth. “There will be plenty of disgusting, drunk men to take from. My only hope is that there’s enough money to justify entering such a filthy place.”
A deep, dramatic sigh came from him, “Let’s just get this over with so we can eat.”
“Give me your arm. It’ll look better if we appear to be together.”
“Are we not together,” he questioned.
“Shut up,” you punched him in the shoulder. “You know I meant together together.”
V gave you his arm with a sigh, which you promptly looped in your own. “You fade into the background and take money however you can,” you instructed. “Maybe even use bits of Shadow to help out.”
He looked to you then began to lead the way in. Lo and behold, it was a dimly lit, dirty looking bar. It was a little surprising how many people were there despite it being daytime. How lucky.
Almost immediately, a man who reeked of alcohol stumbled towards you. “Hello, there sweety. Looking for a good time?” He gave you a wink with his already half-lidded eyes.
“I’m sorry,” you gave a half-assed apology, “I’m not here alone.”
“I don’t see anyone with you,” it was gross watching him look you up and down.
“V, come over!” He drew towards you with a confused expression. “As you can see, I’m with my boyfriend.” A total lie, I’ve never had a boyfriend.
“Boyfriend? That scrawny guy?” he slurred rather loudly and tried to size him up. “How about you come with me instead, sexy? I can show you a much better time.” The patron groped your ass. You gave him the sweetest smile you could before decking him square in the nose. It made an audible crunch and you looked in disgust at his blood on the bandages around your hand.
“How vile,” you scowled and unwrapped yourself, dropping the dirty cloth on the man. “You should feel truly blessed that I didn’t break your hand off.” You juxtaposed the deadpan tone with a pleasantness. “Let us be off, darling,” you said while turning on your heel and taking his hand.
“Hah!” Griffon burst out into laughter once the coast was clear for him to re-emerge. “Who knew you were such a hardass. You should teach Shakespeare a lesson or two!”
“I would rather not kill him.” V made no effort to hide his glare. “I jest, I jest!” You threw your hands up in submission. “How much money did you get though?”
He shuffled through an array of bills. “Enough.”
“Let’s go get this tweety bird his pizza then.” Pleased by your response, Griffon decided to perch on your shoulder. All of you agreed upon getting takeout instead of sitting in an establishment, and you were grateful that it was take-and-go at the shop you found.
The group of you found a deserted alley and rested against the brick wall. “The two of you probably want to eat first, huh?” With a sigh, you opened the box and fed Griffon with one hand and Shadow with the other. It was… cute--other than the demon cat’s slobber getting all over your hands.
“You’re far too nice to them,” V seemed to chastise you.
With a shrug, you responded, “I’ve always loved animals. They aren’t nearly as shitty as people, even demonic pets like these little guys.” Were it not for the bite of pizza in his mouth, Griffon surely would have complained that he was called ‘little.’ “Alright, it’s my turn to eat.” You made sure to thoroughly wipe your hands before digging into what was left. “Oh yeah, sorry for calling you my boyfriend,” you said between bites.
“Can’t say I particularly cared. Unfortunately it didn’t keep him away.”
“Mhm,” you hummed through a mouthful of food.
The day ended unceremoniously, nothing of consequence happened and the night went much like the night before. Only a couple days passed until the Qliphoth began to take root in Redgrave, and May 16th finally came. It was time to regroup with Dante.

Introduction As we begin our study of the classical liberal arts, we will first consider the philosophy behind this ancient system of learning. We will see that modern educational philosophies are not alternatives to the ancient system but errors leading men away from sound philosophy and ultimately, true happiness.
The Arts in Ancient Israel In this second lesson we will connect two important points in the history of the classical liberal arts curriculum. We will consider the development of the arts after Moses up to the time of the development of the famous Greek schools.
The Arts in Ancient Greece In this third lesson we will consider the liberal arts curriculum as it continues to develop among the Greeks, demonstrating that the wisdom of the Greeks was in their honoring the ancient wisdom of Egypt and Israel. We must begin by recalling the testimony of Scripture that Solomon’s wisdom filled the nations. We will see that, while many modern scholars admire the Greeks yet despise the ancient religious traditions, the Greeks were themselves eager to preserve and practice the wisdom of the ancients.
The Arts in Ancient Rome In this fourth lesson we will consider the liberal arts curriculum as it continues to develop among the Romans, demonstrating that the Romans added the language of the curriculum and the art of Rhetoric. Once again, the essence of the liberal arts curriculum (the goal of which is true Wisdom) is not changed, but the beauty of the program is enhanced and the systematizing of yet another part is completed.
The Arts in the Hellenistic World In this fifth lesson, we consider the inter-testamental history so as to rightly understand the relationship between classical liberal arts education and Jewish society around the time of the life of Our Lord.
The Arts in the First Century In this lesson, we continue to follow the development of the classical liberal arts in the early Christian Church, and see the foundation of classical Catholic education.
The Arts in the Early Middle Ages In this lesson we will consider the next important page in the history of the classical liberal arts: education in the medieval world.
The Arts in the High Middle Ages Between the 5th and 9th centuries, Boethius, Cassiodorus, Alcuin and others gathered and preserved the wisdom of the Patristic age, but also sowed the seeds that would give birth to the age to come. The developments of this era were caused not so much by the conscious effort of the period’s scholars to bring in something new, but were forced upon them by the new challenges of the spread of Christianity through Europe. Most importantly, they highlighted the centrality of Dialectic in Christian education and set the stage for the flowering of Scholasticism.
The Renaissance & Reformation In this lesson, we will jump ahead to the first great assault made on classical Catholic education. This assault took place over a period of time, from the 14th through the 17th centuries and is contained within two events identified by historians as the Renaissance and the Reformation.
The Scientific Revolution In this lesson, we will look at the Scientific Revolution, which like the Protestant Reformation, is another manifestation of the dark side of the Renaissance. In this lesson we will get at the core principles of the Scientific Revolution, which have caused great confusion in the Church, have provided for several embarrassing moments in Church history and continue to cripple Christian people today.
American Public Education After the establishment of a federal government in the United States, the ability to collect taxes gave educators and lawmakers a means of ramping up this mission. In Europe, the increase in secular power that followed the Reformation inspired rulers to create public school systems for the indoctrination of children in the interest of social obedience.
The Dawn of Modern Education In this lesson we will look deeper into the philosophical and historical context of the American public school system to understand how it evolved from a Protestant endeavor to create an anti-Catholic American citizenry into a secular machine for cultural change.
Catholic Schools in America   The history of Catholic schools in America is only understood when we consider the schools in light of the history and experiences of the Church in America.
The Classical Liberal Arts Academy In this course, we have covered the history of education from the ancient Egyptians through to the Catholic schools of the 20th century. In this lesson we will look at the misguided efforts some have made to “repair the ruins” and the founding of the Classical Liberal Arts Academy.
The Goal of Classical Catholic Education What you should realize at this point is that our challenge in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy is not one of discovery or invention, but a challenge of restoring what was lost. Nevertheless, we must begin with a careful examination of the goal of the classical liberal arts curriculum.
The Means to True Happiness We learned that this true happiness is available to all human beings, but is available in heaven, not necessarily on earth. On earth, we have four objectives to focus on that will enable us to enjoy God forever in heaven.

Preface
We live at an amazing moment in history.  Society is violently divided and bring driven further apart by political controversies.  Technology is making schooling and publishing obsolete.  Catholic schools are closing, parishes are being consolidated, religious communities are selling their empty facilities, families are failing to raise children who remain in the Church.  Yet, in the midst of this decline, the restoration of classical Catholic education has begun in the Classical Liberal Arts Academy.
I was an ex-Catholic teenager who felt the distress of being left to the world.  I knew that the teachers and religious leaders around me were not sincerely interested in my happiness, and that I needed to find answers for myself.  I had a girl I wanted to marry, but I had no idea how to do anything as a Christian adult.
Christian churches, schools and families, are not supposed to produce lost teenagers like me, and Christian children cannot afford to learn the way I did—most of them never will.  The problem modern Christian teenagers face is not a joke, or “just the way it is”.  It is a systemic failure of Christian society.
My long and expensive search for answers led me to classical Catholic education.  I’ve been working on this research, all day, every day, for over 25 years.  In this book, I’m sharing lessons I wrote for a course for Christian parents in 2009—and I am sharing this book with Christian parents who want to save their children’s souls.
Classical Catholic Education
The greatest challenge Christian parents face today is that they have no access to the history that I share in this book.  This ignorance has left them vulnerable to false teaching by a “classical education” movement that is a living example of sophistry—pretending to be wise to get money.  We have to see through this and move forward with real, classical Catholic education.
We can fix these problems. We don’t need to become experts or earn degrees to to give our children the education they need.  Parents don’t need to become teachers because the teachers have already given us what we need.  We need to work together, as parents, to help our own children learn the truth, which their souls will recognize. Let’s get that work started—there’s no time to lose.

Welcome to our message, dear readers.
Many at this time are in need of support and comfort as they experience situations seemingly generated by world conditions but which in fact are expressions of their own consciousness--experiences chosen as necessary for growth or simply the presence of three dimensional energy. Trust that all experiences are facets of a person's spiritual awakening process.  In the bigger picture, there are no accidents.
Most suffering  arises from fear, the belief that everything in ones life must follow certain concepts of how things must be, and if they aren't "bad" things will happen.  Concepts of "rightness" effect relationships, employment, health, and all facets of daily living.  Your media and leaders continue to promote these things not always to cause fear, but because they themselves fear and believe these concepts.  Most of them are completely unaware of the evolutionary process that is  taking place in the world.
Fear locks individuals to a mindset in which they are unable to see, comprehend, or even imagine expanded ideas.  Fear arises from the belief that one is separate from one's good whether that good is needed or wanted.  Those who live from a consciousness of fear are unable to see any way out of personal problems and often turn to crime or violence as a solution.  Fear also may feed a person's thinking and decision making with so many possible negative outcomes that they become frozen, unable to make any move.
It is a normal to experience fear occasionally.  You have all lived many lives where your survival depended upon fear.  These things remain in cellular memory until cleared.  When you experience fear do not deny, resist, or try and make it go away with various techniques, spiritual or otherwise.  Rather acknowledge it as an  important tool but one that you no longer need  in the Light of your new awareness.
You are the Higher Power that so many speak of and pray to and it is time to fully accept this. There is nor has there ever been a  Power somewhere manipulating the strings of human puppets. The days of praying to some faraway male God in the sky,  attending  church or performing  actions and ceremonies in order to please or get God's attention, must end once a person knows the true nature of God.
We are not saying you must never attend some ceremony or go to church if you enjoy these things.  We are saying only to do them with full awareness that they will not nor can they bring you any closer to God than you already are and  in fact your evolved state of consciousness  will add more Light to them.
Most are not yet  spiritually prepared to understand this, but you who are drawn to these messages are. You have moved beyond the religious and metaphysical steps that brought you to where you are spiritually at this time. You have done the work and are prepared to understand that you and all who attain a consciousness of truth are the ones creating the new world, one that resonates on a higher dimensional level.
This is what  ascension is all about, the evolution of world consciousness through the evolution of personal consciousness and never the result of finding the "perfect" politician, guru, friend, teacher, extraterrestrial, prayer, location, or ceremony.
Nothing is going to be exactly as it was before because consciousness is evolving.  You are being told by three dimensional thinkers and those who dislike change that everything must return to the way it was before but this cannot happen because consciousness which forms itself as the outer,  is rapidly integrating higher dimensional frequencies.  People are waking up and beginning to see that indeed the Emperor has no clothes.
Some jobs are going to change or simply disappear.  Try not to see this as a negative thing but rather as  necessary in order for new and better ways to manifest.  Be open to the new in all aspects of life but do not expect changes to come in a moment, for new ideas can only manifest as the consciousness of humanity opens to them. There will be resistance, but  higher and better ways of functioning can and will take place in business, health, politics, religion, education etc. as allowed.
The human mind  is an avenue of awareness  interpreting everything  according to the conditioning  present in individual or collective consciousness. This is why several people may witness the same thing but each will interpret it differently.  Divine Mind contains no conditioning.  IT is infinitely aware only of the Self sustained, Self maintained completeness of ITSELF because nothing else exists.
At some point of every person's evolutionary journey there comes a time at which they must really accept the truth of ONE and that that ONE is the reality of their own being.  They must cease considering truth to be "airy fairy", impractical, and un-attainable, otherwise they can and will not move beyond their present level of awareness by virtue of the fact that they are keeping themselves locked in outgrown state of consciousness.
It is time to fully, completely, and honestly examine your life, your decisions, your choices, and your belief system not with judgement and criticism but rather with the love and understanding that comes from knowing that every person is only capable of living out from their highest attained level of consciousness.
Remember this as actions you may have taken in the past fill you with shame, guilt, or remorse when seen with new insight.  Know that everyone, self included,  is doing the best they can with where they are at. This is how you learn to love yourself which is imperative if you are to accept the reality of  ONEness.  Even the murderer thinks he is somehow making things better.
Examine what you learned, still need to learn, and how you grew from the most painful experiences of your life.  Ask yourself; "What was I believing at that time that made me feel, respond, or act this way?  Do I still believe the same?  In the light of what I now know, are these beliefs true?"  These questions are important tools that only you can use and which can help you become more aware of what you still hold in consciousness.
Nothing you ever do, say, or think can make you more loveable and worthy of good than you already are.  You are expressions of the one Divine Consciousness and nothing can or will ever change that.  If or when emotions of judgement, criticism, and self loathing surface as old energy surfaces, know that it is a sign you are graduating and moving beyond the old concepts and beliefs that created them in the first place and which you have carried in cellular memory for centuries.
Bless all emotions as they arise for they are your teachers and  bless the fact that you understand what is taking place for there remain many going through clearings who do not.  Be grateful as you realize that you are spiritually ready to rid yourself of all that no longer serves your highest good regardless of how physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually uncomfortable the process may be.
There is so much taking place that you are not aware of and are not being told about by the media.  Stop attempting to find answers to everything taking place for the human mind simply cannot give you the answers you seek.  Begin to live out from your true nature, relying upon the fact that completeness lies within and will manifest outwardly as what is needed if allowed.
Take frequent breaks to be silent and rest in the Divinity of your own Being as you go about your day regardless of where you are.  This can be just a moment that only you know about.  Allow your Divine Self to live your life in all the seemingly ordinary activities for all activity is spiritual. There is no such thing as the "profane" versus the "spiritual" as many religions teach.  There is only One Infinite Divine Consciousness expressing ITSELF as infinite form and variety.
We are not saying to throw up your hands while declaring "God is all!" when situations arise that need addressing on a three dimensional level for that would simply be pretending to a state of consciousness not yet attained. We are saying that in these intense times of confusion and fear for so many,  do not lose sight of the fact that the one Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient Divine Consciousness is and always has been the only power and reality.
Many believe that earth and everything on it is illusion.  Earth, its people, and all forms of life are not and never have been illusion.   It is the false  interpretations of minds conditioned by beliefs of duality and separation that constitute illusion.
Begin to look deeper and see everything through eyes of truth rather than judging by appearances.  Begin to trust that the I of you knows what you need, when you need it,  and how to get it to you.  Some of what you  need may not be pleasant according to three dimensional standards but may be  necessary for spiritual growth.  This is where  trust comes in.
Once you seriously begin a spiritual journey (this choice is often made on a subconscious level)  the journey intensifies and the  "train leaves the station" often going in directions you did not expect or even want.  
You are in physical form at this time because you chose to be here.  You were well aware of the difficulties you would encounter when living in the lower frequencies of the third dimension but you chose to come anyway in order to complete your own journey as well as to add light and assistance to others in a world struggling through the powerful energies of dimensional ascension.
Your moment has arrived and if things are not what you expected personally or globally, allow these concepts to drop away and simply allow, trust, and acknowledge  I AM.

How to Transform Anger in 4 Steps

According to Buddhist psychology, anger is one of the six root kleshas, the conflicting emotions that cause our suffering. Its companions are greed, ignorance, passion, envy, and pride.
Anger can be white hot or freezing cold. Anger can be turned outward to other people, to a particular situation you are stuck with, or to life in general. It can be turned inward, in the form of self-hatred, resentment, or rejection of those parts of yourself that embarrass you or make you feel vulnerable. Anger can cause you to kill; it can lead you to commit suicide.
Anger is fuelled by the impulse to reject, to push away, to destroy. It is associated with the hell realm, a state of intense pain and claustrophobia. That quality of claustrophobia or being squeezed into a corner is also reflected in the origins of the English word anger, whose root means “narrow” or “constricted.”
Anger can be extremely energetic. You feel threatened and claustrophobic, and that painful feeling intensifies until you lash out like a cornered rat. Or it can manifest as a subtle simmering of resentment that you carry along with you always, like a chip on your shoulder.
Like the other kleshas, anger is a part of our makeup. We all have it, but we deal with it very differently, both as individuals and culturally.
Because the experience of anger is so potent, we usually try to get rid of it somehow. One way we try to get rid of it is to stuff it or suppress it, because we are embarrassed to acknowledge or accept that we could be feeling that way. Another way we try to get rid of our anger is by impulsively acting out through violent words or actions, but that only feeds more anger.
Since anger is a natural part of us, we cannot really get rid of it, no matter how hard we try. However, we can change how we relate to it. When we do, we begin to glimpse a quality hidden within this destructive force that is sane and valuable. We can save the baby while we throw out the bathwater.
In Buddhism there are many strategies and practices for dealing with anger. The overall approach is to start with meditation. In the context of formal sitting practice we can begin to understand the energy of anger, as well as the other kleshas, and to make a new relationship with it. On that basis, we can begin to apply this insight in the more challenging environment of day-to-day living.
HOW MINDFULNESS UNDERMINES AGGRESSION
The formal practice of mindfulness is the foundation for exploring the powerful energy of anger. It is hard to deal with anger once it has exploded, which is why meditation practice is such a helpful tool. By slowing down, and by refining our observational powers, we can catch the arising of anger at an earlier stage, before it has a chance to overtake us completely.
The practice of sitting still, breathing naturally, and looking attentively at one’s moment-by-moment experience is in and of itself an antidote to aggression. This is true because anger and other emotional outbursts thrive on being unseen. They thrive on the ability to lurk below the surface of our awareness and pop up whenever they please. So extending the boundary of your awareness takes away the natural habitat that sustains the kleshas.
Through meditation, we learn to tune in to what we are feeling and observe that experience with dispassion and sympathy. The more we can do that in formal mindfulness practice, the less under anger’s iron grip we will be. In turn, the more chance we will be able to transform our relationship to anger in the midst of daily life as well.
Where does anger arise? It is in the mind. So by taming the mind we can establish a strong base for understanding how anger arises in us and how we habitually respond to it. We can see how anger spreads and settles in our body, and how it triggers formulaic dramas about blame and hurt. We can expose our conceptual constructs about anger, our justifications, defensiveness, and cover-ups. On that basis we can go further using the following practice.
THE POISON TREE: A 4-STEP ANGER PRACTICE
One traditional analogy for a progressive, step-by-step approach to dealing with anger and the other kleshas is the poison tree.
How do you deal with a poison tree? The first thing you might do is prune it, to keep it from getting too large or from spreading. But that just keeps it under control. The tree is still there.
However, once the tree is a more manageable size, it might be possible to dig it up and get rid of it completely, which seems to be a slightly better approach.
But just as you are about to do that, you may remember that a doctor once told you that this tree’s leaves and bark have medicinal qualities. You realise that it doesn’t make sense simply to get rid of that tree. It would be better to make use of it.
Finally, according to this story, a peacock comes along, notices the tree, and without further ado, happily gobbles it up. The peacock instantly converts that poison into food.
1. PRUNING THE TREE: REFRAINING FROM INDULGING IN ANGER
The first step is to refrain from speech and actions based on anger. When anger arises, it has usually already taken us over by the time we notice it. The intensity of the emotion and our reaction to it are so tied as to feel almost simultaneous. We are desperate to do something with this anger, either to feed it or to suppress it.
In this step, we refrain from doing anything, no matter how strong the urge to do so may be. The practice is to stay with the experience of anger. We begin on the boundary, with the second-thought level, where we are tempted to add fuel to the flame or try to stomp it out and get rid of it. The practice is to engage in neither of those two strategies. It is to be with our anger without interpreting it or strategising.
Our reactions tend to be so strong and immediate that initially we may not really get to the anger itself. But as our reactivity becomes less heavy-handed, a small, almost miniscule gap opens up between our anger and our reaction. In that gap it is possible for us to be with the anger and at the same time refrain from being caught up in it. We can relate to our anger more purely and simply, without second thoughts.
2. UPROOTING THE TREE: SEEING THROUGH ANGER'S APPARENT SOLIDITY
Once we are able to be with anger with more openness and less judgement, the second step is to look at it more precisely.
When anger arises, we examine it. We ask questions. To what do we attach the label “anger”? Is it a sense perception, a thought, or a feeling? How real is it? How invincible? Is it still? Is it moving? When we try to pin it down, does it slip away? Where does it come from? Where does it live? Where does it go? What are its qualities? Its texture? Its colour? Its shape? What gives anger its power over us?
In this step we examine anger as a simple phenomenon. Where is the anger coming from? What is it aimed at? Is it our fault or is it the fault of someone or something else?
Look as directly as you can. What are anger’s roots? What is feeding it? Go level by level, deeper and deeper. Can you find its root cause?
3. DISTILLING THE MEDICINE: UNCOVERING WISDOM IN THE MIDST OF PAIN
In the third step we contemplate what it is about anger that is harmful and what might be of benefit. How could anger possibly be a form of medicine? If we got rid of our anger what would be lost?
Here the practice is to discern the difference between harmful anger and anger that benefits in some way. Clearly, the mindless expression of anger through words or deeds leads us to harm others and suffer harm ourselves. Yet repressing our anger also causes harm. The anger doesn’t actually go away but shows up in devious ways, wearing a disguise. So is there another option?
According to Tibetan Buddhism, there is a flip side to anger: there is wisdom in it. Normally we are too caught up in our personal struggles to connect with this wisdom, but anger actually has an integrity and a sharpness. It is a messenger that something is wrong, that something needs to be addressed. Anger’s awakened energy is said to be crystal clear, like a perfect mirror. It tells it like it is with no dissembling. Anger clears the air. It is immediate, and it is abrupt, but it grabs our attention and gets the point across. Anger interrupts our complacency and mobilises us to take action.
When we encounter injustice being done to another, when we see violence inflicted on innocent beings, when we see the ways that humans justify almost any crazy act of violence, it is heartbreaking and makes us angry. So anger could be the catalyst that causes us to act with courage and compassion to address violence, injustice, and entrenched ignorance. And the more clearly we see such tendencies in the world around us, the more we come to recognise within us traces of these same tendencies to violence and dissembling. So anger has the power to strip the screens from our eyes, to cut through our ignorance and avoidance of harsh realities.
The destructive force of anger is real and apparent. In addressing its destructive force, we practised restraint in the first step and we began to see through anger’s apparent solidity in the second. Now we are working with the wisdom potential of anger.
In fact, it may not be the anger itself but our tendency to hold on to our anger and its accompanying story line and self-absorption that is so harmful. When anger awakens us to a real problem that must be addressed, we can respond by wallowing in the anger and feeling good about ourselves for doing so. Or we can actually listen to whatever message that anger is bringing to us, while at the same time dropping the messenger. Then we can deal with what has been exposed to us by anger’s clear mirror.
4. THE PEACOCK: ENGAGING ANGER WITHOUT FEAR AND HESITATION
The final step is not actually a further practice, but more the result or fruition of mastering the other three steps. We continue to practice refraining from impulsive displays of anger, seeing through the apparent solidity of anger, and opening to the messages anger brings without clinging to the messenger. When we can do all that with ease, we may finally begin to be able to make use of anger as a tool or skillful means. If anger is called for and would be useful, we are not afraid to apply it. And when destructive anger does arise, we are not seduced, nor do we run away from it. We gobble it up on the spot. Not a trace remains.

And this is also why even true knowledge cannot rightfully be said to be really known to be ultimately true, for one cannot say such for certain until they have made an assessment from the widest frame of reference possible, which may not even be reachable from the an individual perspective.

If an absolute aspect isn't different then a relative aspect, then it is the same as a relative aspect, and hence relative. But if an absolute aspect is different from a relative aspect, then the absolute aspect must also be relative, for, any aspects that are different must be different in contrast to something else, and to be considered "different", means that the said aspect has to be relative to something. So there's no way around relativity. Simply put, a fact is only a fact relative to a context. And since a context has borders, anything absolute within those borders has no applicability outside the borders. And even if you wanna try and break down those borders and say they don't exist and that absolute aspects exist in infinity, you are gonna run into similar problems, for then where is infinity located? Anything that has no location surely cannot exist as we commonly know and define objectified existence. Facts surely have to have a solid context to be recognized, and to say that facts are absolute, yet have no location, which would seem to be a fundamental requirement for an object to exist, is still indicative of facts and absolutism being relative to infinity, despite its borderless configuration. But even if you chalk that up to an intentional oversight, wherein is this infinity even being recognized as an item of consideration? Ah yes. It is infinity relative to a subject. Which brings us to the second factor to look into: subjectivity.
Why subjective? Well, knowledge is only knowledge as it pertains to a subject, by both meanings of the word subject. And just by being contextualized, they are limited to the settings of such contextualizations. So, this being the case, knowledge, at best, is an island. It is not all encompassing. It's utility is facilitated existentially, and not otherwise. And we can use knowledge existentially for communication, creativity and exploration, but there's no reason to try and seek certainty, unless our goals are really to try and pin down reality and control it. To try and pour concrete over an abstract medium. And I know why many of you want to do this, for we see a lot of negativity in our reality and often our impulses motivate us to try and fix it, or clean it up, but understand that messes and broken aspects are originally caused by this very same impulse and motivation: The desire to attach. The desire to attach. The desire to attach. The insatiable craving to want to control circumstances, to be either grasped at and sustained, or to be pushed away and avoided. And this is the primary reason people want certainty. Not really so much because they want knowledge, but because certainty deludes one into thinking they can control circumstances to fulfill their desires. But that's all it is, a delusion.
In all honesty you don't really know jack shit. You cannot be certain of anything. I know this is maddening. I know this is outrageous to the sensibilities of the average modern thinking mind, but it's the raw reality. Yet, this nagging intellectual irritant doesn't necessarily have to be as such. Again, this relates to the default conditioning of the persona, which fosters the tendency to seek familiarity, comfort and stability, aka attachments, which really only weaken and disempower us, for all of this really only fortifies the borders, which, in turn, crystallizes the margins into the towering walls of a self imposed prison. Is this where we really want to be? In the adventure of life, is not our eternal quest to explore, question and observe? And are these activities not the whole point of the trip?
We've often heard it said before, that life is a journey and not a destination, and that the spiritual path is the path itself, and not a matter of reaching anywhere. So the question then becomes: why are you not ok with this? What are your priorities and where did these priorities originate from? Are these inclinations your own, or were they just instilled in you by other people who wanted to shape and mold you to their own instilled standards? If you are here to make the most out of your existential exploration, then stop looking for outside approval, and stop looking externally for power and authority. You are not going to find existential truth in the libraries or in the hierarchies. You don't have to feel the need to emulate and identify with an archetype that you think reflects your self image. You will have not accomplished anything by finding some knowledge, or scripture, or philosophical ideology, and then preaching it atop a soap box, wagging your finger at the uninformed, using guilt as a weapon of conformity.
Take it easy, relax. Let go of the need to bend others to a purpose. Whenever we see an ideologue or a theologian who is adamantly imploring us to accept some kind of knowledge or world narrative as an irrefutable truth, it is always more indicative of a troubled psychology, then of a sound philosophy. You seem to be aware of an experience of phenomena. Beyond that, it's all narrative; of which, is then called knowledge.

I have received many questions that relate to or boil down to problems with perfectionism, so here are some thoughts for the archive. 
Perfectionism is the tendency to desire “flawlessness” as defined by an individual’s conception of it. This implies that "perfect" is often in the eye of the beholder, though a person can of course be influenced by external or societal factors in the standards that they choose for defining/envisioning perfection. For the purposes of this article, perfectionism is assumed to be a negative characteristic. Although the word "perfect" sometimes carries a positive connotation with regard to a simple desire for "betterment" towards an "ideal" state, the aim here is to explore how this seemingly innocent desire might go very wrong or take an ugly turn into dysfunction.
What Motivates Perfectionism?
It is important to distinguish between "needs" and "wants" because many people feel as though they "need" perfection rather than simply desire it. Using the word "need" as a substitute for "want" lends the concept of desire a greater air of legitimacy, which can easily turn into an unhealthy sense of entitlement. If something is a "need", then it is implied that you must have it in order to "survive", then it is assumed that people shouldn't stand in your way whenever you want to satisfy your need, further, it would even be morally wrong for them to stop you. For example, people have a need for food, water, clothing, and shelter, which satisfies the first component. However, once those basic physical needs are achieved, there are other needs that become important, such as the needs for safety, stability, respect, validation, belonging, competency, freedom, opportunity, achievement (see Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as an example). Generally speaking, you can identify a "need" by whether you 1) require it for living a good life, as well as 2) whether it leads to you fulfilling your personal potential in positive ways. Needs are defined as universal (true for all human beings), so it is an essential concept to understand for anyone with an interest in living a fulfilling life.
A "want" is not something that you need but something that you desire, i.e., it belongs to you, is tailored to your unique life circumstances, and is not necessarily important to everyone. It is not the purpose of this article to argue that personal desires are wrong or even morally problematic. Desires can be legitimate when satisfying them would result in living a good life and/or you fulfilling your personal potential, i.e., when they are connected to important human needs. However, many people don't understand their desires at all, specifically, they are unaware of the origin/cause of their desires and thus cannot successfully determine whether satisfying a particular desire is leading them in the right direction over the long run. Worse, people often know full well that satisfying a desire is going to produce negative consequences yet they can't help themselves, in which case the desire has become more of a compulsion.
Perfectionism is a compulsion. A compulsion is an intensely strong desire that is motivated by unconscious emotional reactivity, which includes things like: deep-seated fears, insecurities, painful memories, unresolved traumas, defense mechanisms. Generally speaking, people are not inclined to directly acknowledge and confront unconscious activity because it provokes unpleasant feelings and tends to threaten self-esteem, therefore, humans are emotionally motivated to keep unconscious activities in the unconscious. However, the more one tries to repress or suppress such activity, the "louder" it becomes, until one cannot help but be compelled by dark emotional forces.
For example, a perfectionist is often unable to handle criticism gracefully when it threatens their self-esteem. Self-esteem problems are often rooted in unconscious fears about being inadequate and/or being rejected by others for being inadequate. When the unconscious fear gets loud enough to rise into consciousness, it might compel the person to eliminate the external trigger of the fear, e.g., they might aggressively shut down the criticism/critic or make excuses to deflect the criticism. You may not be able to observe the perfectionism at first glance, but when you dig deeper into their motivations for shutting down the criticism, it is because the criticism interferes with their conception of the "perfect" self who magically "never makes mistakes".
When perfectionist behavior is motivated not by a pure desire for betterment but rather by dark and unknown unconscious activity, it becomes unhealthy, and a person is likely to manifest dysfunctional and problematic behavior that interferes with thriving and flourishing in life. Therefore, one important key to understanding perfectionism is to understand the dark emotional content which underlies it. There is rarely one neat cause when it comes to complicated human behavior; perfectionism can be learned from many possible sources and for a variety of reasons. Since perfectionism serves to address an emotional problem, people continue it even when they are aware of the negative effects, because they are not addressing the underlying emotional problem itself. 
On average, Intuitives are more likely to be perfectionists than Sensors. Accepting and honoring facts and being able to adjust one's expectations in accordance with reality naturally serve to inoculate a person against developing perfectionist tendencies. This is not to say that it is impossible for Sensors to be perfectionists, it is just less likely. Intuitives are often dissatisfied with reality, refuse to accept facts that limit their imagination, and they aren't as adaptable to unexpected reality checks. Since they are heavily invested in achieving their hopes, dreams, or ideals, they are more likely to slide into perfectionist behavior in order to force reality to conform to the images that they envision. In other words, an unhealthy N function is often the culprit behind perfectionist tendencies. Since everyone has an N function, everyone is capable of perfectionism under the right circumstances. Perfectionism takes slightly different forms according to the health and development of the N function as well as its position within the functional stack.
Ni Perfectionism (NJs & SPs)
Ni wants to envision one perfect future that will come into being, and a person runs into problems when that vision is out of touch with reality. NJs are the most likely to become perfectionists and tend to suffer terribly because of the extremes that they often go to in order to achieve their ideals. SPs don't tend to be as prone to perfectionism because higher Se allows them to be more adaptable and easygoing, but perfectionism might creep in when an individual is prone to tertiary Ni loop or inferior Ni grip, or when they meet a situation that activates low Ni insecurities.
No matter the functional stack position, when one's Ni perceptions are too narrow, too rigid, too poorly defined, or too extreme and removed from reality, it is quite likely that Ni types will display self-sabotaging behavior. To use Ni appropriately: 1) one must understand the difference between perception and reality, 2) one must be willing to examine the truth of one's perceptions about the world, and 3) one must be able to step back from negative events in order to put them into a big picture or longer term perspective. Therefore, when Ni is used inappropriately: 1) one often treats their twisted perceptions as absolute truth, 2) one tends to become lost in wishing that ideal visions come true, and 3) one is easily led astray by the trivial and the negative because of lacking big picture or long term perspective.
Individuals who aren't able to use Ni maturely often suffer from hair-trigger frustration and, if they lack a healthy outlet for their negative feelings, they tend to utilize Se to dump their frustrations out into the world. For example, unhealthy Se behavior often looks like: emotional overreactions, impulsive overcompensation for negative events/setbacks, unreasonable demands and expectations, aggressive and controlling behavior, insufferably whiny and self-pitying attitude, arguing uselessly about which "facts" are true/false, selectively picking out “evidence” to support/prove problematic ideas, wasting time redoing tasks in order to perform them perfectly. Of course, such behavior is hardly conducive to flourishing and realizing one's positive potential. When Ni perceptions are too distorted/extreme or when Ni types have difficulty setting healthy ideals to guide them towards positive self-actualization, it is likely that they eventually suffer from depression or cynicism because they see nothing in the world that is worth committing themselves to.
- Immature INTJs often struggle with auxiliary Te development, which means that the methods and strategies they choose for achieving goals lack efficiency and effectiveness, thus increasing the chances of failure or disappointment. INTJ perfectionism often takes the form of aggression as they try to make the world conform to their ideals and expectations for how things "should" turn out perfectly. However, the more they try to force reality to change (rather than adapting themselves to reality), the more likely they are to create new problems, which then gradually saps their willingness to engage with the world.
- Immature INFJs often struggle with auxiliary Fe development, which means that they have difficulty fitting in and establishing emotional intimacy with others, thus suffering the loneliness and unhappiness of lacking a good social support system. INFJ perfectionism often takes the form of self-flagellation and trying to contort oneself into a false image of perfection so that one can side-step fitting in by taking solace in being whatever definition of perfection one believes is necessary for feeling self-confident. However, the more they strive to be a false image of perfection as a means to build fake self-esteem (rather than solving the root of the problem in their emotional insecurities or social anxieties), the more they lose touch with the authentic self and their own emotional needs, to the point of feeling completely lost in life and not understanding why.
- Immature ENTJs often struggle with auxiliary Ni development, which means that their ideals are often unhealthy or misguided, thus increasing the chances of feeling empty or dissatisfied even when they do manage to achieve their desired goals. ENTJ perfectionism often takes the form of tackling every challenge aggressively, such that one can efficiently reach imagined ideals of success every time. However, the more easily they rack up achievements and use them to define personal success (rather than reflecting on the larger meaning and value of those achievements), the more inflated their ego becomes and the less likely they are to admit to any existential emptiness or confusion, which makes it all too easy to continually defer questions of health and integrity.
- Immature ENFJs often struggle with auxiliary Ni development, which means that their ideals are often unhealthy or misguided, thus increasing the chances of feeling underwhelmed or unhappy even when they do manage to fulfill their aspirations. ENFJ perfectionism often takes the form of blindly pursuing ideals that they believe help increase social regard and/or social harmony. However, the more aggressively they chase the positive feelings of affirmation or harmonization (rather than reflecting on whether those social rewards are truly meaningful, universally good, and lead to spiritual fulfillment), the more likely they are to lose their authentic self because of only defining themselves through the rewards and punishments of social life.

ISTP perfectionism often takes the form of gerrymandering facts and details to match up with one’s oversimplistic and reductive beliefs about the world, obtaining self-confidence by exerting control and influence over outcomes. However, the more they must dismiss important and relevant information in order to keep their belief system intact (rather than integrating new facts and broadening their knowledge base), the more likely they are to encounter failure and contradiction, which causes them to feel a growing disillusionment with the world.
- Immature ISFPs often struggle with auxiliary Se development, which means that their attitude and understanding of life is severely limited and circumscribed by their own narrow preferences and emotional instability. ISFP perfectionism often takes the form of trying to make the world conform to one’s own personal value system in hopes of resolving underlying feelings of incongruency or dissatisfaction. However, the more they overreact to every little thing that challenges their sense of competency (rather than focusing on the challenges that would help them become a better person), the more likely they are to sow chaos and produce negative consequences that hold them back in life, sometimes to the point of paranoia and believing that the world is conspiring against them.
- Immature ESFPs often struggle with auxiliary Fi development, which means that their ability to make healthy and moral choices is easily compromised by pointless or trivial distractions. ESFP perfectionism often takes the form of using trial-and-error to pinpoint exactly which behaviors are going to efficiently achieve the most pleasure and validation. However, the more they chase after fleeting highs or superficial validation (rather than reflecting on how best to live a life of authenticity and integrity), the more likely they are to feel empty and unsatisfied as they too easily sacrifice their integrity for things that never seem to fully sate their desires, which opens the door for depressive thoughts to overtake their positive and trusting nature.
Ni perfectionism is essentially a misalignment between what one wants the world to be (Ni) and what the world is (Se). When Ni and Se are imbalanced, Ni types only see what seems to be lacking, they sense imperfections, falsehoods, gaps, voids, and they hyperfocus on those things, unable to visualize let alone actualize meaningful positive potential. The remedy to Ni perfectionism is to bring one's expectations and reality closer together. The world is under no obligation to meet your expectations, rather, if you are serious about living your life well, you must learn to adapt your expectations to the realities of the world. It is not healthy to aim too high or too far, nor is it healthy to aim too low or have no aims. An ideal is simply a concept that provides direction, and progress should be made incrementally by carrying out realistic plans and learning from setbacks, but focusing too much on the destination means that you miss out on the fun of getting there or you miss out on other more interesting paths. Remember that the rigid way you define “perfection” does not reflect the truth of the world and how it should be. When you stubbornly hold on to problematic ideas and ideals despite the negative effects and consequences, how can you ever learn, feel, experience, and appreciate ALL that life has to offer? The meaning of life is a subjective construction, a mere concept, so it can be changed at any time should you will it, but you can't do that when you want to believe in comfortable falsehoods and close your mind off to other valid interpretations.
Ne Perfectionism (NPs & SJs)
Ne wants to remain open to new possibilities in hopes that pursuing them can keep life interesting or progressing, and a person runs into problems when they have trouble envisioning and pursuing the right possibilities. NPs are similar to NJs in that they can exhibit perfectionism when they become fixated on only one particular possibility that they are heavily invested in bringing to life, though they tend to take setbacks/challenges in greater stride than NJs because of being able to access a greater number and variety of potential possibilities. SJs don't tend to be as prone to perfectionism because higher Si allows them to be more easily content with reality as it is, but perfectionism can develop when an individual is prone to tertiary Ne loop or inferior Ne grip, or when they meet a situation that activates low Ne insecurities.
No matter the functional stack position, when Ne envisions possibilities that are too limited by poor imagination, too detached from logistical reality, or too unreasonable in expectations, it is quite likely that Ne types will display irrational behavior. To use Ne appropriately: 1) one must understand the relationship between hope and success, 2) one must be willing to temper/adjust one's hopes to accommodate important facts and details, and 3) one must be able to envision positive possibilities even in the face of negative setbacks. Therefore, when Ne is used inappropriately: 1) one frequently encounters disappointment because their hopes and dreams are easily dashed, 2) one tends to become too idealistic or uses fantasy for escape, and 3) one feels easily destroyed by every little setback/mistake because of being unable to muster a positive and resourceful attitude.
Individuals who aren't able to use Ne maturely often suffer from fear of disappointment and, if they lack a stabilizing force in life, they tend to utilize Si as a means to express their irrational anxieties about loss or regret. For example, unhealthy Si behavior often looks like: pedantic nitpicking, obsessing over small insignificant details that don't match preexisting expectations, compulsive comparisons that serve no useful purpose, circular ruminating on past missteps, incessant complaining about how the present/future can never live up to a mythologized past, pessimistic projections of past mistakes into future failure, making lame excuses to shut down new ideas and possibilities (and stay within comfort zones), preemptive self-handicapping or lowering expectations in an attempt to avoid/blunt future disappointment, anxious micromanaging behavior that tries to catch up with constantly fuzzy/moving goal posts. Of course, such behavior is hardly conducive to flourishing and realizing positive possibilities. When Ne visions are unrealistic or when Ne types have difficulty accessing feasible and inspiring possibilities, it is likely that they eventually suffer from depression or resignation because they see no opportunity for real progress.
- Immature INTPs often struggle with auxiliary Ne development, which means that their outlook and understanding of the world is severely limited and circumscribed by their preexisting system of judgment, thus making them unable to achieve substantial intellectual growth. INTP perfectionism often takes the form of trying to twist and turn facts to fit their closed system of logic, struggling until they feel as though their knowledge has reached an "ideal" state of "making sense". It is not healthy to always be chasing greener pastures, nor is it healthy to always let fear stop you from branching out into greener pastures. Hopes and dreams are there to guide and motivate you, but you will turn them into sadness and disappointment when you focus too much on the destination rather than appreciating how you grow and mature along the way. Remember that progress in life should be gradual and incremental as you learn from each step as well as each misstep. When you expect to make progress too quickly, you'll be easily duped by “shortcuts” that backfire on you; when you don't expect that progress is even possible for you, you'll resign yourself to bad/undesirable circumstances for no good reason. At any point in time, you can choose to make a decision that changes your life direction and you ought to try to be a better version of yourself, but you won't be able to choose the right path if you believe that the past defines who you are or if you are unwilling/incapable of looking forward to positive future possibilities.
As mentioned in the introduction, perfectionism is an expression of unconscious emotional reactivity. Lack of awareness of unconscious activity makes it likely that a person confuses their needs and wants, i.e., they treat their perfectionist desires as “needs” and then become irrationally driven to satisfy them.

is it a need or want?
is my behavior harming myself or someone else?
are my “standards” or “expectations” reasonable and appropriate?
where do my “standards” or “expectations” come from?
what do I fear might happen if I were to “let things be”?
can I confront and articulate the fear itself rather than acting out?
can I envision, as objectively as possible, both the pros and the cons of “letting things be” (rather than just assuming the worst)?
can I put negative events into a big picture perspective?
The first step in addressing perfectionism is to develop better emotional intelligence so that you can be more aware of your perfectionist behavior and its emotional origins. Conceptual Development and Personal Biases. January 2019.
Up to this point of the project, I have been making the comparison between contemporary forms of confession, specifically within a digital realm, with religious confessional cultures. Specifically my research and comparison has narrowed into confession on social media specifically, and the Catholic confession in Medieval Europe as discussed by Foucault in History of Sexuality: Will to Knowledge. I collected research about this into a short publication which can be found here: (document pages to be uploaded onto blog).
The Foucault text has become gradually more central to the project as my research continues. There have been multiple stages of development which have come directly from an initial critique of the text and later an acceptance of it. I have described earlier how I initially saw Foucault’s premises as contrary to my own premises, specifically his idea that Western society is already confessional: confession is at the core of discourse, and this history can be traced back to the function of Medieval religious confession (add ref here, passage from second chapter). I realised that this coherent ‘traceability’ of confession meant that I had to alter my idea that ‘the return to confession’’ was a novel suggestion. If confession has been here all along and is fully integrated into the foundation of Western communication as Foucault suggests then ‘’re-integration’’ is futile - this re-integration being the centre of my initial proposal. However, this traceable history backed up my idea that confession has a mechanical role in communication, both for society and the individual, with ‘’the production of truth’’ (in Foucault’s words) (add ref) at its centre.
Later, I was reluctant to accept the deeper consequences which Foucault suggests - those which relate to social power. Foucault is critical confession’s role in society, seeing it primarily as a means of power and control of the masses. He looks at Catholic confession in Medieval France as a case study, specifically the Lateran Council reform of 1215, which specified exact ways in which confession was to be carried out, and more importantly, made it mandatory by law. Confession was a way in which agents with power integrated themselves into the very foundation of individual’s lives. He states that this still exists contemporary manifestations of confession. An example given is the relationship between doctor and patient: the doctor has inherent power over the patient by the nature of their discourse, which is inherently confessional (the patient admitting ‘’I have a problem with my body’’ in hope of treatment). This power, especially in the medicalised forms, is termed ‘’bio-power’’ by Foucault and can also be seen in psychiatry, prisons and even schools. I was fascinated by this theory of Foucault’s, but was reluctant to accept it because of the consequences the power dynamic would have on my project’s development and my own personal assumptions. I had approached ‘’confession’ with optimism that it could be ‘reclaimed’ as a means of personal fulfilment. In its secularisation, I had assumed that confession would give power back to the confessor. This is not the case for Foucault. In his line of theory, the context of the confession may change but the underlying power structures are what remain. Clearly, my initial proposal was the reverse of this.
I had specifically considered the similarities of pre-Lateran council confession and the current state of messy and unregulated confession in the digital realm. In loose terms, I considered the idea that an outcome of my project would be to mimic the Lateran council reform, as a way of giving new structure the confession to make it positive and effective. But this was entirely overlooking Foucault’s primary theory of power dynamics in confession. What are the consequences on the comparison between Medieval and contemporary digital confession, if Foucault’s power dynamic is accepted? Who is the agent of power? In accepting Foucault’s overarching theory, these are new questions I will be looking at moving forward in the project.
Foucault’s kernel philosophy is history is at the core of this. In other texts, he talks of how the present can be mobilised by the past (all of this needs refs). That is, things are the way they are now because of how things have been. In examining the past, freedom is given to the present. This is because we can see the ‘fragility’ of historical cause and affect - this loosens the illusion of determinism and ‘mobilises’ the present. Using his example of sexuality, for instance, Foucault tells of how the Victorian era’s discourse around sex effects the present day approaches to sex (as a huge simplification).
This suggests a sense of hope for the confessional mechanism as I had initially viewed it. One of project’s new goals, then, is to locate the specific power dynamics within the contemporary digital mode of confession. In observing the present though the understanding of its development from the past, there is the chance of Foucault’s ‘mobilisation’, that is to say, change. This will be a secondary goal of the project.

I think what Land is getting at here is quite applicable to the mind-set of the slave-morality modern British. Though the youth of Britain are raised on a diet of freedom and equality as absolute good, the truth is that Nietzsche was right. Slave morality is manifest in us; and how do we slaves behave when we are freed?
I think this is what is happening in the broad sociological and venereal experiment that is happening all around me in this place. More than eight hundred thousand of my countrymen visit this island annually, primarily to seek annihilation, either through narcotics or the window into the veiled beyond that comes with orgasm. Can there be another interpretation of a desire to visit paradise, and while there spend one's time in an aircraft hanger-sized shed, listening to soulless and repetitive music while ingesting mind-altering chemicals? Of course there is; in that- this is fun. We like to do these things. Recreational drugs are recreational because they are pleasant, mostly. Even so, I fear there is something deeper and nihilistic at the root of this desire when I imagine that many of these people work a full year in gray boxes to achieve the week-long nirvana of being in a gray box with some fairy lights.
There is another aspect to the Anglo-Abroad culture, which is that of the explorer and conqueror motif. Read that last sentence in your best Richard Spencer accent for added effect. The Anglos, I find, are very much a conquering race when let off the leash of their masters and set loose on another land, like whippets chasing a stick across a field in lieu of a rabbit. It is sad to see such widespread disrespect for people of other nations, though of course Not All Anglos Are Like That. I think this too comes from something deep within us as a race, and is perhaps the expression of the idea that we are lesser sons of greater fathers. That we are no longer the self-determined empire builders of old, no longer the Tommy. Perhaps it is true that Anglos need something to go and fight, or we surely go insane. It certainly appears to be so, based on my own limited and unscientific experience. We are purposeless without conflict. Maybe we are horrible xenophobes, ill-educated and monolingual thugs. If that is so, then who bred this monster?

Clemson doctoral student produces rap album for dissertation; it goes viral
Clemson University doctoral student A.D. Carson is many things — poet, activist, and rap artist to name a few — but “typical Ph.D. candidate” is not one of them. So when it came to writing a dissertation, he couldn’t simply write a traditional one. Instead, he produced a 34-song rap album that already has the internet buzzing.
The album, “Owning My Masters: The Rhetorics of Rhymes and Revolutions” uses hip-hop to explore such ideas as identity, justice, economics, citizenship and language. The songs have garnered tens of thousands of views on YouTube, more than 50,000 streams and downloads on SoundCloud and hundreds of thousands of hits on Facebook, all before Carson defends them as a whole to his doctoral committee Friday in the Watt Family Innovation Center auditorium.
Using a music album for a dissertation, as opposed to the usual written document, has never been done at Clemson before, but Carson says it was the only way he could do it.
“I had people ask, ‘Are you doing this just to be provocative? Is this a gimmick?’ My response is ‘absolutely not.’ This is my way of being in the world,” said Carson, who speaks with effortless eloquence and cuts a cool and dignified figure in a ball cap, T-shirt and dark grey sweater with a “Reading is Sexy” badge pinned to it. “Both my senior and master’s theses were on music that I’d been making, so at this point I figure, you don’t get to the one-yard line — to use a metaphor that Clemson will understand — and then put the ball down.”
Carson recorded the album in a small studio he put together in his apartment near campus, using Adobe recording software made available to all Clemson students. He enlisted two childhood friends from Illinois, Blake E. Wallace and Marcus Fitzgerald, to help produce it.
The resulting music has a production value good enough to rival anything on the charts today.
At Clemson, Carson discovered that one of his professors, Chenjerai Kumanyika, just happened to be a former hip-hop musician with a Ph.D. in mass communication. Before he became an assistant professor at Clemson, Kumanyika was in the hip-hop group “The Spooks,” which had several gold and platinum records in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Kumanyika became a mentor to Carson and provided literature and insight on theory and methodology that informed his dissertation.
“A.D. Carson’s virtuosic musical performance and composition, his scholarly rigor and his deep literacy with African-American cultural production are all on display in his mostly completed dissertation,” said Kumanyika. “The project, which has already been referenced publicly by such leading scholars in popular music culture as Mark Anthony Neal, explores complicated questions related to the art, criticism and knowledge production in the context of the ongoing problem of global racial and class hierarchies within and beyond the academy. Throughout the process, Carson has been clear and committed to his vision.”
The album begins with the scratchy notes of a fiddle and banjo playing the classic Southern anthem “Dixie,” but then it slips into beat-driven hip-hop with rapid-fire lyrics and cadence that wouldn’t seem out of place on contemporary albums by Jay Z or Common. Carson uses a diverse selection of samples throughout the album — from Aretha Franklin to the soundtrack of the movie “Django Unchained” — which he equates to the quoting of sources in a standard dissertation.
“The central thesis of my dissertation is: Are certain voices treated differently?” said Carson. “I’m trying to examine how an authentically identifiable black voice might be used or accepted as authentic, or ignored, or could answer academic questions and be considered rightly academic. So I have to present a voice rather than writing about a voice.”
Carson has never been one to take the path of least resistance. Throughout his childhood in Decatur, Illinois, where his father was a factory worker and his mother a caretaker for her disabled brother, Carson was more a seeker of knowledge than a dreamer of fame and fortune.
“My parents divorced when I was fairly young and I have seven siblings,” he explained. “I mostly grew up with my mother and one — sometimes two — of my brothers. We moved from one apartment to another just about every nine months. I attended a different school every year until my junior and senior years of high school. I think that might’ve inspired a lot of writing for me during those times.”
His thirst for comprehension drove him to become the first in his family to graduate from college. He received undergraduate degrees in English (secondary education) and writing from Millikin University in Decatur and his master’s degree in English from the University of Illinois-Springfield.
Clemson’s rhetorics, communication and information design (RCID) Ph.D. program drew him to the Upstate. The program is cross-cultural and transdisciplinary and offers an academic-professional degree designed to prepare students to conduct research and to disseminate their findings through teaching and publishing in professional journals.
“The [RCID] program here is really innovative,” said Carson. “When I spoke to the director of the program, he knew that I was working for the Urban League and was a writer-in-residence for a university’s literary journal and doing a lot of other things. I operated in a lot of different worlds and he said, ‘Yes, that’s what we do — that’s what we want!’”
Clemson associate professor of English Jillian Weise, herself an award-winning poet on the national stage, said being a member of Carson’s dissertation committee has broadened her notion of what a thesis — and literature itself — can be.
“It expanded my comfort zone. I listened to rap, but I hadn’t been analyzing it until coming on board as a dissertation committee member,” she said. “One thing I think is really amazing is we’re in the year when the Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Bob Dylan. To me, I just see in the next 50-100 years, the Nobel will go to a rapper. There’s that potential. I really believe in the power of the lyric.”
Carson’s music already has demonstrated the kind of power Weise referenced. One of the tracks, “See The Stripes” — a spoken-word poem full of biting metaphoric imagery imploring students to “see” the black stripes in the Clemson Tiger, not just the bright orange normally associated with the football team — generated nearly 15,000 views on YouTube alone and sparked a public dialogue online and on campus in 2015 that eventually involved Clemson’s administration and led to a series of lectures, discussions, performances, exhibitions and peaceful protests.
Carson credits the university for encouraging such open discussion.
“I would not have been able to do the work or learn what I’ve been able to learn had it not been for coming here,” he said. “The challenges and the triumphs are all a product of this particular space, and my critical perspective has been sharpened here.”
Carson admits that some people will find parts of “Owning My Masters” offensive, but that is part of the design.
“There are challenging lyrics and even challenging language. Those are deliberate choices I’m making. That’s part of the kind of engagement that we need,” he said. “Sometimes it’s difficult to find the opportunity to approach a conversation about language. Hip-hop makes it an organic engagement.”
Carson carefully controlled every detail in the 34 songs and he laid out the amount of thought that went into them by using one as an example:
“There’s a song called Familiar that uses a classic trap beat — trap being a distinct form of rap with a very deliberate tempo and drum pattern that originated in the South, specifically Atlanta. So it’s not just a style of music, it speaks to the circumstance the people who make it might be in,” he explained. “The form of the song is imitating Langston Hughes’ ‘Dream Variations,’ a poem that has two stanzas that are very close to one another, and the content is informed by James Baldwin’s idea that Americans are trapped in history and history is trapped in us. So think about using this rap form called trap that originates in the South in a song where you don’t know if the verses are the present or the past. It’s subtle but it works on a lot of different levels.”
The resulting record is breaking boundaries and challenging assumptions even long-time faculty members have about academics.
“I’m really excited to be working with A.D. and the possibilities it opens up for Clemson,” said Weise. “I’m also excited to teach at a university where a student comes to us and says: ‘This is my dream. This is what I want to do,’ and we say, ‘Yes you can do that here at Clemson!’ That makes me proud to be on the faculty here. I’m so grateful that we are sharing with the world the possibilities here at Clemson that are manifest in his work.”
Carson himself might best sum up the impact his dissertation will make in the opening lyrics to the second song on his album, “Dissertation [Part 1: The Introduction]”:
They say History is written by the victors, so when you see my picture in the book it’ll be consistent with my memory, my victories, my tendencies that tempered me and wintered me. Cold, like those Chi City winds, ‘cause they’re blistering.
It’s in my DNA. It’s in my bloodline. What I do is much deeper than a punchline.
