The Road Back: Chapter 37
His Hearth, His Sky, His Home
Read on AO3 or FFN
Rating: Teen
Pairings: Christopher Pike x OFC (Aalin)
Word Length: 1.2k
Summary: Once the physical injuries from Talos healed, Chris resolutely moved on resuming a casual social life. When he met someone who called to his heart and each time the moment was right to become lovers he pulled back. Unwilling to trust himself. Unsure if the attraction and his feelings were real. Torn between desire and self-protection. For the Talos incident was more than kidnapping, imprisonment, and mind-control. It was a violation of the deepest and most intimate kind. And perhaps there was no way back.
Excerpt:
Pike again righted his attention, directing it to Mia and the status data required by Command, wrenching it away from remembered sensations from last night: touch offered without expectation, sensual, intimate beyond the physical, beyond the erotic. A simple massage which patched more than his spasming back.
His mind refocused on the ship’s fuel efficiency. Face to face with Aalin, his hand caressed her cheek. She slept in his arms, her head tucked under his chin. The scent of her hair, the softness of her skin, the warmth radiating from her body. The quiet sighs she uttered when snuggling closer.

“Captain Pike, you look stressed,” Kedan said, raising an eyebrow. “What have they got you doing out there now?”
Framed in the doorway of Kedan’s apartment and just about filling it with those damn shoulders of his, Christopher Pike— Starfleet-issue overnight bag in hand— smiled wearily and huffed a wry laugh. “Nothing I can talk about, unfortunately.”
“Mm.” Kedan watched his old friend thoughtfully for a moment while Pike tiredly dropped the bag and slipped out of boots and jacket both; then he headed for the kitchen, calling back over his shoulder, “Go sit down before you fall down, Chris. You didn’t actually have to come by just because you were in the area, you know,” Kedan continued as he snagged Pike’s favourite whiskey from the back of the cupboard, “I was only joking. Honestly, you look like you ought to be spending every minute of your shore leave catching up on some rest.”
Sprawled back in the deep cushions of the living room couch— and looking like it was the first time he’d relaxed in weeks— Pike shrugged and watched through half-lidded eyes as Kedan walked over to sit with him.
“I know,” Pike said, accepting the glass Kedan handed over. He took a sip, sighed in contentment, and slouched down even further. “But I wanted to come,” he added sleepily, giving Kedan’s knee a warm squeeze. “It’s been too long, Kade.”
“It really has, hasn’t it?… Well, I had planned to ask what you’re cooking for dinner tonight, but I think I’ll save it for ‘what’s for breakfast, darling?’ instead,” Kedan said, twisting on the couch to face Pike, who breathed another soft, slightly rueful laugh. Before he could argue the point, though— and Pike would still try and cook supper in this state if he wasn’t held in check— Kedan continued, “So the real question now, is… Did you want to come, or come by? Because that’s looking like a rather important distinction tonight, I think.”
“Need to know if you’re taking me to bed or putting me to bed, is that it?” Pike asked with a crooked grin.

My first true fandom as we know it {probably Arthurian Legend was my first and truest fictional love}, and one I have been faithful to for over 25 years. Honestly never please talk to me about it, because I have rabid opinions about literally everything. And lastly, I only included tv/movies here because books and rpgs would require an entire three or four Long Ass Posts all of their own. Much Love.

The Canon Muse List of Of Darkest Desires and Darkest Desires Erotica
So many people have been asking about this...for years now. I specifically don't list the canon characters that I write for because that list is lengthy, and changes with the wind and my personal muse. However, since it is a new year, I suppose it's time we did a full canon character list for this blog. And, as an added note, I will also add at the end of each section notable OC muses that belong to these specific worlds.
Quick key before we get to the list, though: if a character is one of my favorites, they will be bolded and colored. If a character can be written genderswapped, they will be italicized. If a character is written non-canonically, they will be struck-through.

✍️ What was the first fandom you rpd in?
Unconventional munday asks!
//SO
I think the first ever fandom I rped in, well that I can remember, on tumblr, was OUAT.
I cannot for the life of me remember how I got into it. I applied to an RP group and got in. I have no idea who I played to be honest. I think maybe a vampire but I don't know if that's the second group I joined.
Then Maria sprung up as a sideblog and went from there and she was in every goddamn fandom. Like everything, a lot of it was shippy stuff but there was cute little family threads in all the spaces. Some of the ships that were like the most memorable on the blog.
Marvel - with Bruce Banner (whole family built from that)
Marvel - with Loki
Marvel - Hawkeye
DC - P.Sure there was a thing with a Zod
Batman - Jim Gordon, this was adorable.
Batman - Two face/Maria
Gotham - Alfred x Maria
Star Trek - Scotty x Maria
Star Trek - Captain Pike x Maria
Star Trek - Maria x McCoy (the fact she called him Leo still has me soft)
Star Trek - Maria x Spock
Sherlock - Maria x Sherlock
OUAT - Maria x Archie
Kingsman - Maria x Harry
X-Men - Maria x Wolverine
James Bond - Maria x Bond
OMG there was a Psychoville one too. Like holy crap.
Then god there were so many OC's, there was a detective and a kingsman agent and I'm sure there are so many more.
I mean I've probably missed some but these are what popped to mind. And most of them still like make me smile when I thin about them.

Chapter IV - Conclusion
Tumblr media
Here is the fourth and final part! Enough drama and action, this one comes with fluff and comfort and a little funny ending!
I hope you like it and in the next story, it goes to the academy!
@bold-brave-courageous @allthetrek @reeselivesforeverinmyheart
Leave me some fb if you didn´t mind!
I was a bit nervous when I finally got there. So I allowed myself to take a deep breath before I knocked. The few seconds I waited for the door to finally open made me think for a moment that I probably didn´t look dazzling, but I couldn´t get any further. I heard his come in, then I stepped through the door and found no one.
"Chris?"
I gave my brief orientation, then became a bit hectic.
"Chris!" I hurried off and almost wanted to panic when I found him sitting at his desk. "Yes, excuse me." He looked at me. "I was in thought." Slowly he got up. "What are you doing here?" "Are you serious?"
I stared at him. His face was scratched, his lip torn open, the cut on his forehead pulled to his ear, even on his nose dried blood stuck. In several places his uniform was torn, bloodied, and as he came up to me, he limped slightly.
"You belong to the sick bay." "I was sure you had enough to do." "Don´t let Boyd hear that." "I'm sure he knows." He tried to smile at me, but he didn´t get far, thanks to his damaged lip, then he swayed a bit. "Okay, that's enough."
I walked up to him, grabbed his arm, pulled him the few steps to his bed and asked him to sit down. Quickly I turned off the suitcase, opened it and pulled out the tricorder. I scanned the body with the scanner and sent the data to the sick bay, but I could tell he was not seriously injured.
"And Doc, what does it look like?" "That's not funny." I put the tricorder back in the suitcase, went slightly to my knees and pulled on the zipper of his uniform. "Get out of this thing." Carefully I pulled it from his shoulders, which went not without pain sounds. Then I reached for the hem of his undershirt and he didn´t come out without pain. As soon as the fabric was down, I could see why. There was a decent bruise on his right shoulder that stretched over the entire shoulder blade.
"You're lucky that your bones are still all intact." I threw his clothes on the floor, then I took a hypospray and administered a dose of painkillers, heparin, and anti-inflammatories. Immediately I could see how he relaxed a bit.
"Thanks." He looked at me. "I have not done anything yet." I smiled slightly, then fished the skin regenerator out of the suitcase and turned to face him. I knelt on the mattress next to him and started with the big wound on his forehead.
"How did that happen?" The machine did its work and closed the bloody scratch. "Explosive against shuttle transporter." He closed his eyes. "Do you want to guess who pulled the short straw?" "Chris, that was hours ago."
I reached for a swab and ran over the skin, which was now closed, but still red. Then I moved on with his cheek. This type of regulator also fights bruises and blue spots, making them break down faster, but still he would look a bit more colorful than usual for a day or two.
"I came back only half an hour ago." "Please do not talk." I turned to his lip. "That could have been ended worse. You could have broken your skull, probably there was not much missing and you would have smashed your shoulder, broken your leg. "I sighed, then looked into his eyes. He was tired and done. His face reflected what was going on in his head. "You could have died." "That's the risk when you leave this ship for the field." "Chris, that's not funny." I dropped my hands, then looked at him. "You know it." "I just read it." Now he put his head back.
"Dr. Boyd tried everything, but Donovan was already in a terrible state when he arrived here. "I put down the regulator and reached for the hand, the wrist of which he clutched. "Let me see, please." I ran the tricorder over his hand again, he had sprained it badly, one of the metacarpal bones was cracked, but not postponed. "That could hurt a little." I took the osteosynthesiser and ran it over his hand. He winced.
"I held his hand until the transporter carried him away." Chris watched me guiding the blue beam over his hand. "I've seen enough injured crew members to know when it's bad for someone." Then he looked me in the eye.
"You really couldn´t have done anything." I put my hand on his cheek, he lifted his free and closed his fingers around it. "And even though it's terribly selfish, I'm so glad nothing has happened to you." I leaned over and kissed his forehead, he closed his eyes as I leaned my head against his. Then I pulled myself together again and looked at him.
"Are you in pain?" Slowly I let myself sink back onto my legs. He shook his head. I looked for my communicator.
"Crap."
When I looked at Chris, he smiled a little, then grabbed at his belt and pulled down his communicator. "You really have to learn to think about it." "I'm just starting to learn." I snapped it open. "Zimmer to Dr. Boyd."
"Cathrin did you find him?" "Yeah, I did, he's fine so far." I felt him watching me. "I sent you the diagnostic data." "I have them here." "I've taken care of the wounds and the small fracture, heparin for the bruises and painkillers." "Good." Boyd cleared his throat. "Chris, I want to see you tomorrow and no re-speech." He only nodded slightly, so I answered instead. "He nodded." "Rest, both of you, Boyd End." I closed the communicator again and put it away.
"You heard it."
I smiled slightly, then briefly stroked the hematoma on his shoulder. That made him flinch. "I would put on a bandage that combats the swelling and the pain." I let my hand lie briefly on his skin when I felt him relax under my fingers. "Do you want to take a shower first?" "No." He turned a little to me. "No, I just want to sleep." "Okay." I pulled the bandages out of my suitcase, tore open the packaging and began to supply his shoulder. "Hold on tight." I pulled a few laps around his chest and then up over his shoulder. I praised myself briefly for my professionalism, then I fixed the end and turned to his hand. "I'm afraid that will hurt tomorrow anyway."
"Could be worse." He smiled weakly at me. "For example?" I returned it while I bandaged his hand. "Phil could be sitting here now."
This made me laugh a little despite the gruesome day, then I got up and packed my things together. "Should I help you chance?" Now he had to laugh briefly. "I'm not going to tell you what's been going through my head right now." "Why not?" I found his pajamas in the chair in the corner of the bedroom, picking it up and bringing it to him. "Because it's indecent." He raised his eyebrows. I smiled at him, then took the T-shirt. "I also thought that if I took you out off this uniform, it wouldn´t be because I had to see if everything was still intact." "Good to know."
Then he surprised me by pulling me to him and onto his lap. I closed my arms around his shoulders and looked at him. God, how I would have kissed him and let this kiss carry us on, but he was hurt and we were not at all fit for what we had in mind. I started to tip my nose around his, feeling him open his lips a bit and that made my purpose even more unstable. His hands went under my jacket and I let him pull it from my shoulders.
When he closed me in his arms again, I put my hands to his face. I couldn´t get enough of the look he was giving me. He glared at me passionately and I was sure that the same desire could be read in my eyes. I ran my thumb over his cheek, rested my forehead against his, and pressed against him, kissing him. He returned it just as violently, before his hands slid down my back to hug me tightly. Chris picked me up and I pulled away from him.
"No, not wait!" My whispered warning came too late. I felt him clench and not succeed in suppressing a pain. It didn´t help that I slipped sideways on him as he let go of me. "Oh damn." He dropped back onto his good shoulder and grabbed at the injured one. "I forgot about that." "Me too." I jumped up and took the hypospray with the painkillers out of my pocket. I injected it directly into the muscle and stroked his back until I felt him relax.
"Sorry." I gave him a kiss on his shoulder. "You should really try to sleep and that." I leaned over him and smiled at him. "We skip." "Agreed." He blinked slowly, then tried to sit up again, so I stood up, grabbed his good arm and pulled him up. I grabbed the shirt.
"Arms up. Well, at least one. "He giggled slightly, then raised his arm, threading his sleeve, pulling it over his head and down his injured side. My fingers brushed his skin a little, the slight sigh that slid away from him made goose bumps over my body, but I pulled myself together. "Trousers?" "I'll just let that on." "Chris, it's full of blood and filth." I handed him my hand. "Come on, I'm not looking." I smiled when he immediately knew what I was referring to. "That just seems like a hundred years ago." He let me pull myself to my feet, the medication unfolded their full effect, he became a little sleepy.
"Only fifty." Slowly, I released my grip on him. "Can you do it alone?" "I do my best."  I smiled, then turned to get him a glass of water. I heard the belt buckle rattle, fabric rustling before something flew across the room and slammed against the wall behind the chair. "That gives only five points." "Ah, I can live with that. Okay, you can go back. "He smiled. "How old are we?" "You are as old as you feel. Something about three hundred years at the moment." "Plus minus a few weeks." He couldn´t suppress the yawning. "Let's go to bed." I went to him, took him by the hand and pulled him to his bed. Chris sank down on the mattress, then slowly lay down. "Shall I wake you up tomorrow?" "The computer can do that." He still held my hand. "Stay here." "What?" I smiled uncertainly. "Sleep here." He replied. "I think none of us should be alone." "You know." I sighed a little. "That's a good idea."
Also, I was too tired to protest and the way to my quarters seemed endless. I took off my boots, then sat on the bed. I felt Chris slip sideways, then reach for my hand and pull me towards him. I threw the blanket over both of us, then turned so I could look at him, and slid so close to him that I could lay my forehead against his. It felt so good to have him back again, save here in my arms.
He put his arm around me and closed his eyes. He fell asleep almost immediately, and when I watched him for a few minutes, my eyes closed and I let myself into a deep sleep.
 ******
Calling the events of the next few days on Exelor chaotic would have been a catastrophic understatement. After the USS Intrepid came in as support, we were able to bring the situation under control relatively quickly and give people the help they needed.
Despite everything, we were not fast enough, there were more than a hundred deaths to mourn and these were not just due to the epidemics. The radical group, which wanted to force the government to redeem the dubious deals with the Orionsyndiakt, had taken all the blame. Both, the outbreak of the flu, as well as the attack with the bio-weapon took on their account, what had been necessary, the Orion had procured.
In order to protect the population, the Federation Council had agreed to the rapid, provisional admission of the colony, but put it under harsh and imposed strict conditions. It took days to take care of all the injured and sick and I was at the end of my strength when the last colonist finally left us.
"How did you like your first lesson in galactic politics?" Boyd watched as I filled one of the treatment rooms with everything needed to run it smoothly. "Great." I squinted at him. "When will it continue?" I leaned against one of the cabinets. "It was awful." I slowly closed my eyes. "I thought humanity would now be beyond such games?" Boyd didn´t say anything, I was pretty sure I had had that conversation with him or Number One in those days before.
"I've never been so scared." "About your life?" The experienced doctor raised his eyebrows. "Cathrin, if you have this." "No, not for my life. I'm well aware that I'm exposing myself to dangers that I may not be able to survive, but I was not aware."
"That you could lose loved ones too?" He suddenly stood beside me, his hand on my shoulder and a look on his face that reminded me so much of my father that it almost hurts.
"The news that there were fighting down there hit me completely unprepared."
"You lost your heart to the Captain of the Federation flagship." He put his arm around me and hugged me. "And, as I'm sorry to say, he's unbeatable in getting himself into trouble." That made me laugh for a moment.
"And from all that I've seen in the last few days, my love, you are well on your way to join him." Again, I couldn´t help it. "The first foreign mission and you cannot think of anything better than completing it with a command refusal." "I'm sorry doctor." I looked at him, I had not thought of that yet. "Am I getting in trouble now?" "Yes, you do." We turned and found Chris leaning against the doorframe. Judging by the grin on his face, he stood there for a while. "Would you please excuse us, Phil?" "Of course." Boyd smiled at me before winking slightly, then left. "Be nice, Chris." He laughed slightly, then looked at me sternly.
"Captain." I took stance. "I apologize for my wrongdoing, but in this situation and given the circumstances, it seemed appropriate to me to join Doctor Maya's decision. And she acted in the interests of her patients. " "That's what her report says. By the way, she implores me to exclude you and Ensign Freeman from all allegations. "
I figured I shouldn´t say anything about it, so I just saw him kicking off the doorframe and walking toward me. "But, just to make that clear, Cadet." He did his best not to smile. "Insubordination is no small matter and next time I cannot and will not be so forgiving."
"Yes Sir, understand." I looked at him. "I hope you were just as nice to Freeman?" "Of course, but he was a bit more worried than you." Chris gave an eyebrow. "At least, try to pretend to be a bit panicky."
"Okay." I stretched a little more. "Is that then everything Sir?" "That's all Cadet." He nodded to me. Now he was already grinning all over his face. "Dismissed."
"Aye Sir." I relaxed a bit and then left the treatment room. At the door I turned around briefly. "You enjoyed that a little bit too much." "Ohh, you have no idea." "Don´t get used to it." I winked at him and then just let him stand. It may be that he gave the orders here, but in this case I had the last word.

The Road Back: Chapter 35
Reframing
Read on AO3 or FFN
Rating: Teen
Pairings: Christopher Pike x OFC (Aalin)
Word Length: 3k
Summary: Once the physical injuries from Talos healed, Chris resolutely moved on resuming a casual social life. When he met someone who called to his heart and each time the moment was right to become lovers he pulled back. Unwilling to trust himself. Unsure if the attraction and his feelings were real. Torn between desire and self-protection. For the Talos incident was more than kidnapping, imprisonment, and mind-control. It was a violation of the deepest and most intimate kind. And perhaps there was no way back.
Excerpt:
Midcourse and without instruction from its passenger the turbolift halted, switched to a horizontal tube for several seconds then back to a vertical shaft. It traveled down, opposite from her requested destination. Aalin glanced at the information panel; no malfunction alerts displayed. She moved to the left rear corner of the car in case the lift was rerouted for a medical emergency.
When the doors opened Chris entered. Or more accurately limped in. “Sorry.” His tone was sheepish. Turbolift call buttons read fingerprints, the Captain’s diverted the nearest car. With tentative, slow movement he leaned against the wall. A wince followed. “Resume to original destination.”
“Belay that. Deck three, crew quarters.”
“Thanks.”
Aalin scrutinized him, trying to push aside how well he filled out the dark blue short-sleeve shirt and cycle-length shorts, both were snug like riding gear. “Rough workout?”
“I held my own.” Defensiveness edged his tone. He rolled then rubbed his right shoulder. His right hand flexed, straightening and curling its fingers on repeat. “Ensigns Maddson and James are ranked players.”
“And less than half your …” she said.
Without moving his head, Chris’ eyes met hers. He glared as if daring her to finish the sentence.

Sometimes It Comes Down to a Choice (Part 2)
Pairing: Christopher Pike x Female OC
Takes place some point in the future after the events of the Red Angel
Summary: Alina has always carried a secret flame for her Captain and she's always known that it could never lead anywhere. However, the combination of a party and some drunken words might just make that a little more complicated. The only problem, everything just seems to be going wrong. Who knows, maybe a proper goodbye is just what they need.
Tags: angst, injury, a pair of dumbasses unnecessarily complicating things
Notes: lol, because i’m such a cliche, this situation is loosely based on an interaction w an ex. also, sorry if they seem like coherent drunks but i thought this was better then just them just smashed and the ensuing “WELL YOU’RE PRETTY GOOD LOOKING, YOU KNO- *barf*” Let’s just take the angle of liquid bravery. also, i say pike smiles a lot because he DOES. he’s very SMILEY.

———
Why do I always put myself in these situations?!
I had told myself at the beginning of the night that 1) don’t get drunk because alcohol makes you talkative and 2) stay away from the Captain because alcohol makes you talkative. I have already failed on all points. We just keep drifting together no matter what I do, and the combination of over-keen pourers and nerves in general means that I am far more intoxicated than I planned.
“Look, I’m telling you Michael, it was life or death.”
“I would believe you, sir, but I have found that you are prone to exaggeration.”
“That stings, Burnham, it really does.”
On the other hand, Chris has never looked so good. A broad, warm smile rests comfortably on his face and only the touch of red across his cheeks hints that he’s been drinking. His eyes shine as he and Michael continue their back and forth. I’m not really listening to their conversation despite its volume. I am just happy to watch my people laugh and my Captain relax.
“Alina, back me up here!”
I’m forcefully jolted back into focus by all eyes in the conversation turning to me. I grin somewhat bashfully and mumble out a ‘yeah, sure’, entirely unaware of what I’m agreeing to. Everyone laughs at my confusion except for Chris, who gives me a quiet smile that is meant for only me.
“Now Captain, that is unfair. Of course Osborne would agree with you,” Michael’s tone is gently mocking.
I raise an eyebrow at her, trying to fight the blush rising up my face. She raises her hands in mock surrender but the smile doesn’t disappear. I down the rest of my drink, though it’s not lost on me that it does nothing to remove Michael’s gaze.
“Uh…Of course, I should be able to rely on my officers to support me!” Chris’ tone is joking but the red on his cheeks deepens markedly.
Huh.
The conversation eventually falls back into rhythms but I feel a touch at my shoulder after a few minutes.
“Osborne, can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Yeah, sure Burnham.”
We step away from the group and I turn to face her. I know she’s been drinking but her usual friendly but stoic facade remains in place. I cross my arms, waiting for Michael to speak.
“What is going on between you two?”
Ah, the question I really don’t want to deal with right now.
“Nothing!”
“Seriously, Michael, there’s nothing!”
“Okay, we both know that that is not true. You two need to get over whatever this-“ she pauses to gesture between Chris and myself-“ is because the rest of us are just waiting for this to finally be done with. Seriously, you have been running in circles around each other for months!”
The realisation that my little ‘crush’ has been public knowledge for so long completely throws me. I feel so thoroughly exposed that I can’t think for a second. I know that I’m blushing red and hot, and Burnham places a hand on my shoulder.
“I never said it was something to be ashamed of, Alina. Love is nothing to fea-“
“Thanks, Michael, I think I just need a minute.”
I’m probably being rude but honestly, I need to get my thoughts in order. I walk away from the bustle and the music towards the loading bay gateway. There is something I find strangely grounding about knowing that beyond the mere metres of holofield before me, an entire universe of empty space exists beyond my reach or control. I walk behind a storage container and sit slowly, leaning back against the cool metal. The static of my thoughts echoes around my head as I consider the silent stars before me.
“Are you alright?”
Of course he would be the one to find me.
I look up at Chris and allow myself the quick luxury of just admiring him. His white shirt is tight across his shoulders and I can see the athletic line of his legs through his charcoal grey slacks. The light of the holofield fights with the general darkness of the bay to paint his face in gentle silver, highlighting the strong strokes of his features. Chris is dressed simple and plain but by the Heavens, he looks as close to perfect as I am capable of understanding. However, his eyes are contorted with concern.
“Yes, don’t worry. It’s just…Michael brought up…some stuff that-it’s complicated, let’s just say that.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not particularly, no.”
Chris sits down beside me, close enough that I can feel the warmth of his skin. Its heat is an unwelcome distraction to my already restless mind.
“What do you want to talk about, then?”
You stumble, “Um-I don’t know…anything?”
Chris chuckles quietly, “Burnham must’ve really thrown you if you, Alina Osborne, have nothing to say.”
I send him a mock glare that only widens his smile. I look away to the stars and try to think of something.
Oh, of course.
“What about the stars?”
It’s dumb and cliché but they’re the only things coming to mind. I don’t dare look at him, out of fear of judgement or something equally as painful.
“What about them?” his tone is curious and, as I should have expected, kind.
I throw my hand out towards space while I try and find the right words, “Everything! I mean, we’re both Starfleet, so you must’ve felt something pulling you towards the stars too, right? Didn’t you look up and wonder what was out there? Beyond the telescopes and the info-vids? Because I did…Still do. We live in a universe of possibility and mystery, and it makes me sad sometimes that I’ll never get to see it all and-I am rambling, I’m so sorry…We-we should get back.”
A blend of passion and alcohol had just made the words tumble out of me with reckless abandon, and now I’m embarrassed all over again for different reasons. I move to rise but a steady hand on my arm causes me to pause.
“Alina, there’s nowhere I would rather be right now…Stay. Please.”
I resume my seat but I am completely lost for words once again. Nowhere…a little spark of hope flickers into life at the base of my stomach, and for the first time I don’t immediately douse it. Of course, he could mean that he was sick of the crowd or simply interested in talk of stars but…
So we talk. We talk endlessly of stars, Starfleet, old friends, history, home, and everything in between until the growing quiet tells us that the party is drawing to a close. Chris is so deeply thoughtful and intelligent that I could speak to him for days or years, and never run out of things to say. I am so desperate to hang on to this conversation, this carved-out moment that is so distinctly our’s. He seems no more keen to leave than I am, but I can feel our time running short.
“What was that festival from your homeworld called again? Haal’i? You never did explain it.”
“Hal’ai. It’s kinda complicated to explain. Once day a year, no one uses electric lights for the whole day across the whole planet. It-“
“You’re telling me that everyone does it without fail?”
I wave my hand offhandedly, “Ok, fine. Nearly everyone. Just all the people in any form of settlement, but maybe there’s some hermits who use the occasional torch. Happy?” I raise an eyebrow while Chris grins in return.
“Yes, thank you. You know I’m a stickler for the details.”
“May I continue?
“If you would, please.”
I give him a joking side-look but turn my gaze back to the stars, “As I was saying, we turn off all the lights. The whole idea of Hal’ai is to sit in true darkness and look to the stars. It’s supposed to remind us of the true beauty of nature and our responsibility to the life around us. I always loved that concept, but also the profound feeling of Hal’ai that we’re part of something so much bigger that ourselves. It’s a feeling I’ve only ever found in one other place.”
“Where?” Chris’ word is whispered, like he’s afraid to break the reverie.
I smile wide, at no one in particular at all, “Starfleet. On board the U.S.S. Discovery. Standing by your side.”
I turn back to Chris, not caring if I seem absurd because I’m swept up in my love for my home, my vessel and, possibly most of all, him. Not that it matters, because the grin stretched across his face tells me that he knows exactly what I mean. Before I can react, before I can even close my eyes, Chris’ mouth is on mine. His lips are velvety and warm, and I can feel his hands hot against my cheeks. He tastes ever-so-slightly of liquor but I am intoxicated by the feeling of his skin flush against mine. Eventually, my brain catches up and I push back against him, trying to drown in the feeling of his mouth. I lean into Chris, my own hands beginning to travel up his chest, when he abruptly pauses and pulls away. I am left like an astronaut without air, simply grasping for oxygen and a tether.
“I’m sorry, I-I shouldn’t have done that.”
What?
What?!
“I don’t understand, Chris. What did I-“
“You didn’t do anything, Alina, I just-I’m your captain, and you’re my officer!”
He’s become somewhat frantic, pushing his hair back repeatedly while looking anywhere but at me. The realisation is beginning to sink in, piece by piece. Surprisingly, something that resembles anger is what rises to the surface.
“I’m going to need a little more than that, Chris.”
He looks back at me and all I can see is the distress in his eyes, “It’s not that I don’t want this, it’s- it can’t happen! Not with our jobs, with our positions!”
I can’t find the words. After everything, Chris feels the same as me (he feels the same), but he’s letting our jobs-
“What are you talking about?!” The anger is showing now, “Our jobs?! Like a captain and an officer have never-it’s not-I don’t…Look, if you want pin this on drunken stupidity, fine, but don’t lie to me!”
Chris’ face goes slack and he leans in until our foreheads are touching and I can his breath on my lips. As much as anger still charges through my veins, I am paralysed by the touch of him. He takes a breath and then another, like he’s trying to find the strength to speak.
“Alina…” Chris says my name like I might disappear. “Never think that I don’t care about you, that I wouldn’t give you the world if I could. It’s just-I have a responsibility to my crew and I can’t let you change that. I can’t put your life above the rest of my crew. If it comes down to saving you or my crew, I can’t-“
The anger drains out of me like it was never there to begin with. A bone-deep weariness is starting to take its place.
“That’s what this is about? Some theoretical future where you have to choose me or them? Chris, please, don’t.”
“I should never have kissed you, as much as I wanted to. I thought I could control myself and then you started talking about stars and us, and…I am so sorry it came to this.” He tucks a strand behind my ear, and the little gesture almost breaks me.
I swallow back whatever is threatening to rise, “Since it seems like I don’t get a say in this-don’t, let me finish-just do one last thing for me.”
“Anything.”
“Kiss me one last time and then walk away. Prove to me that you can leave and not come back because I need you to be sure, Chris. If you go…I won’t sit around, waiting for you to come back. I can’t hold on to you, hoping that one day you’ll choose me.”
Chris pulls back and pushes his palms onto his eyes while shaking his head like he can’t believe this is happening. Every line of tension in his body screams anguish and I don’t get it because Chris is choosing this. I am desperate for him and he is pushing me away.
He places his hand on my cheek and I can’t help but lean into him. “You don’t understand…That’s the problem, Alina. I want to choose you, I will always want to choose you, but I can’t. I just can’t.”
Chris leans in slowly and I close my eyes as our lips touch. I place both hands on his chest while he threads his arms around my waist, gently pulling me flush against him. The kiss is as soft as an echo and as sweet as it is bitter. Inch by inch, my hands climb to intertwine in Chris’ hair and I can feel him shiver slightly against me. I want to remember every second of this, every short moment of Chris being completely mine. But then, too soon, far too soon, he’s pulling back slightly. His hands continue to draw flickering circles along my waist while Chris just studies my face and I wait for him to say that he’s changed his mind, that he can’t leave.
“Maybe in another life.”
Chris leans in to place a gentle, lingering kiss on my forehead, then turns around and walks away.
Just like that.
Just like that, I had held him and lost him, all in the space of a few hours. A feeling of intense loss swiftly crashes over me and I have to cover my mouth to silence the sobs. I lean back and just let the tears fall for a while, let my heart feel this loss. Then, when I finally find the strength, I slowly rise and stand, staring out the stars. Then, as alone as I had started this evening, I steadily walk back to my room.

i’m always a slut for unnecessary tension. also, DON’T WORRY, THERE’S ANOTHER PART

I’m lost. (Captain Pike x Reader)
I just did it again. I saw the latest episode of Discovery and wrote this sad little something that came into my mind.
Warnings: none, perhaps angst and sadness
notes: inspired by the song “In this shirt” by The Irrepressibles. English is not my first language so I am sorry for all the errors. Hope you'll like it :)
Tumblr media
Captain Pike didn’t know how he made it through the day since he took the time crystal. After materializing on the transporter platform of the Discovery, he passed the crystal on to Stamets. Then he talked to Ash Taylor and L’Rell about their wise and grown-up son. Everything had to be done before he could allow himself to think about the whole impact his decision would have on his life.
At the end of the day, he walked to his room with the knowledge that the only possibility to stop Control is to destroy the Discovery and transfer everybody to his Enterprise. The Enterprise...
The tightness in his chest grew with every step which brought him closer to his private quarters. They had set up a course to meet his ship. He only needed to get through the night. Tomorrow he would have the time to think about his future, after saving the crew of the Discovery. They trusted him, they were under his command and therefore, nobody will be left behind.
And that is the reason why you will be trapped in a life-long cage, Chris…
Pike found it difficult to breathe. His hand travelled to his chest as an attempt to massage the numbness away. It didn’t work. Finally, he reached his room, opened it with a code and stumbled into darkness.
“Everybody out! Now!”, he heard his own shouting repeated from the vision of his future he saw earlier. Pike heard the fire, the crackling glass and felt the burning pain of the increasing radiation.
The captain closed his eyes and fumbled uncoordinated with the zipper of his uniform jacket. He needed to breathe. Now.
Finally, he unzipped his uniform and while hurrying to the bathroom, he left the jacket on the floor.
I accepted my destiny. I had to accept it- he tried to remind himself, but the vision of him in this wheel-chair gave him the biggest anxiety he ever had. He still felt the pain, running through his whole body. Still felt the urge to talk but not being able to.
Pike’s breathing sounded heavily by now and unsteady. He rushed to the sink and splashed cold water on his face. His hands shook, as he put as much water on his skin as he could.
How can I go on with my life? I should resign, buy a horse farm on earth and live far away from the stars. But how could I escape now when I signed in for my future?
Pike closed his eyes again. The water dripped from his face into the sink.
He loved travelling through the stars. He needed his Enterprise crew, his job.
“I am a Starfleet Captain, and I am not going to quit.”, he whispered to himself. He’s going to save those cadets. If not him who else will be there? As Pike realized that, he turned off the tap and slowly sank down to the cold bathroom floor.
Without him, all these young cadets are going to die. Tears dwelt up in his eyes. It’s better him than one of them. What means one life for the sake of many?
Pike covered his mouth and silenced a sob, which escaped him unexpectedly. He knew the rules and beliefs of Starfleet from the first day on but in the end he was only human. A person who wanted to really live his life.
Another ugly sob escaped his mouth. They must be close to the Enterprise now, so he should pull himself together. It didn’t help both of the crews to see their Captain broken.
But Christopher Pike couldn’t stop. The tears fell down his cheeks, on his shirt and even his attempt to wipe them away didn’t help. He’d never felt so … lost.
“Chris are you here?”
No... It couldn’t be Y/N., he thought and closed his eyes. We haven’t reached the Enterprise yet. Y/N couldn’t be here. Pike shook his head. He must have gone mad. Like he was told on Boreth, everybody who saw the future went crazy. He must be no exception.
“Chris?” His name was a soft question sent into the dark bathroom and a second later, Pike felt warm and soft hands on his knees.
“By the stars Chris… what happened?”
Pike opened his eyes and was surprised. It was really Y/N. His smart and beautiful first officer sat with him on the floor and looked at him with so much love and comfort in her eyes that his heart skipped a beat.
“Y/N!”, was the only thing Pike got out. His voice sounded hoarse.
Y/N cupped his cheeks in her hands and brushed away his tears.
“I am here – I listen to you if you want.”, she said slowly, trying to comfort him.
Pike shook his head.
“I wish I could tell you what happened but I – I can’t. I simply just ... can’t.”, he answered and sounded desperately. Y/N stayed silenced for a moment and took his hands into hers.
“You’ve no idea how much I wanna talk about it but– “.
“Sh.. it’s okay, Chris. It’s okay-”, Y/N interrupted him and placed a kiss on his hands. For the first time, Pike looked up to Y/N. She saw the struggle in his normally hopeful and courageous looking blue eyes.
“No – nothing is okay, Y/N.”, he replied. Y/N couldn’t take it any longer and pulled her boyfriend in for a long hug. The Captain didn’t protest, it seemed like he was grateful for it.
“I have your back, Chris. I am here for you, always. No matter what happens.”
His grip around her waist tightened. If she only knew the truth…

Prelude — a short piece of music, the form of which may vary, which serves as an introduction.
You had been a little anxious. Of course you had – you were to train as a cadet under Fleet Ambassador Pike. On the Enterprise. She is a legend in the service, being almost single-handedly responsible for fast tracking Kaminar into Federation membership. There is still work to do before they become full members but no other member of the Starfleet Diplomatic Corps had gotten close to anything remotely like that. Especially since only a couple years ago one of the species on the planet had literally been culling and eating the other. Every one of your classmates had been envious, and some of them had out and out said so.
You had worked hard to get this posting, though, and you were determined to prove yourself. You had remained calm when you had your test for the Enterprise; it had taken you a little while to recognise that it was a test, but you had had all the regulations down in your first couple of months, and… you believed in Starfleet. You believed in the Diplomatic Corps. You believed in doing things the right way. And your beliefs and hard work had carried you through.
You’ve been on the ship a few days, now, and you think that you’re getting the feel of things.
The ambassador had smiled as she walked into her office on the second day for your pre-briefing meeting – you had her hazelnut cappuccino ready on her desk, and it did smell good. You weren’t sucking up, not really, but you were getting your double espresso and you thought you might as well.
On the fourth day you had summarised the diplomatic briefings you were privy to – nothing about the Klingons; that was above your clearance level – and you highlighted the worsening situation in the Jeyra system in Kaminar’s sector, and the news that had come in overnight that Xahea were sending aid to the colony on Beta Corona IV after a blight of some sort caused their main harvest to fail. You presented the PADD to the ambassador with her coffee, and waited as she read it over.
“Well, Cadet, excellent summary. Looks like you’ve got yourself a job – I’ll be expecting a report like this every day. Think you’d be able to do the diplomatic segment at the morning briefing in a couple of days?”
“Thank you, ma’am. And yes I will—if you’re sure?” You had enjoyed the briefings you had attended so far, although you hadn’t opened your mouth. It was such a privilege, being around Captain Pike, Number One (even though she’s terrifying), Spock…
“Of course.” Her smile was warm, and you felt like your dreams were coming true. The Enterprise. Ambassador Pike. And you had impressed her.
*
Your roommate, Adriana Santos, seems nice, too, which is a bonus. She is a stellar physicist, and is as excited as you are to be here and make the most of the opportunity.
You get an early breakfast together; her reviewing the latest astronomical papers, and you reading through diplomatic briefings, as usual. Today is the day you present at the briefing, and you are going to be ready. You have quite the stack of PADDs with you, and she had raised a perfect black eyebrow at them as you left your quarters, but she didn’t say anything. You can’t miss anything important today of all days, and she knows that.
What you hadn’t expected from being on the Enterprise, you think as you try to balance your armful of PADDs with operating the handle on the turbolift, was that you would find Science Officer Spock so… so arresting. He’s handsome, no doubt about it, but you’ve been around good looking people before. That’s not enough to make you lose your cool. But with him it’s something more. You’ve only really seen him in briefings so far, but there’s something about his mind, the calm but compelling way he makes his points... he really makes you think.
You’re still thinking about him as the turbolift slows to let someone else in, and you tighten your grip on your PADDs.
And when Spock walks through the door? That’s when they pop out of your arms and on to the floor.
You really wish that the floor would swallow you. But, you think, as you bend to pick them up, you’d fall down the turbolift shaft and the idea of that is more painful than the darkness of the ground.
And then while you were thinking that you didn’t notice that he’d bent down too, and you bump into him. Spock. The Vulcan touch-telepath.
“Oh gosh I’m so sorry, Lieutenant! Thank you!” At least you didn’t make skin-contact, you think, as you feel yourself warming.
“You are welcome, Cadet. Are you heading to the ambassador’s office?” You nod. “I will assist you.”
“Um, I should be fine, you don’t need to—” his raised eyebrow silences you.
“Cadet, if I may?” You nod once again. “Ambassador Pike would not have invited you to present at briefing if she believed you needed to make preparations over and above your normal level. Previously I have seen you carrying five to six PADDs. Ten may be excessive.”
The door opens, and you follow him out of the turbolift.
“Speaking at briefing is nothing to be nervous about. Everyone wants you to succeed.”
*
“She’s good, isn’t she?” Leah looks positively smug over her raspberry cappuccino.
“What happened to ’I don’t have time to babysit another one?’” Chris needles, though they both know that Cadet Davies hadn’t been ready for a shipboard posting.
“I like making sure that Carlos always owes me.” She takes a sip. “But I’ve barely had to look at the diplomatic wires this past week. Only the classified stuff. She started preparing the summaries off her own bat. And it’s a good thing, too, what with the progress we’re making at Xahea. I appreciate having that little bit more time.”
“I was surprised by how fluent she was this morning. Spock mentioned there’d been some incident in the turbolift, but it didn’t seem to phase her.”
“She didn’t say anything to me, not that that she would have. I dunno, Chris. I know it’s early days, but I just hope she’s more typical of what’s coming through the Academy than Davies was. We’ll need cadets like her if the SDC is to pull its weight...”
*
“Computer! Cancel message!”
“Unable to comply. Message is in processing queue and is no longer able to be modified.”
“Fuck,” you say, aloud, as you realise what you’ve done.
The last few days had been going well. The ambassador had you research and brief senior staff on the Meluran greeting ceremony, after they had reached out to the Federation for assistance. An accident had left their atmosphere more susceptible to their sun’s solar wind, and they needed help before dangerous ionising radiation started damaging their ecosystem and making them sick.
Adriana had told you about the science side; she was working on an analysis of the star, and looking at whether there was anything the ship could do to reduce the particle flux for a time, while other teams worked on regenerating the atmosphere. You couldn’t say you understood all of what she’d said, but you were pleased to do your part.
The Meluran were desperate, so it wasn’t as vital that the ceremony was performed correctly like it might be for a trade negotiation, but you knew it would make everything go a lot more smoothly if the away team could get it right.
There hadn’t been much contact between the Meluran and the Federation before, so after you exhausted the computer you reached out to your lecturer in interspecies communication at the Academy. She’d put you in touch with the Federation Diplomatic Corps Envoy who had handled the initial communication with them, and he’d put you in touch with a Meluran named Pamedra who had not only sent you information on the ceremony’s cultural significance, but had also sent you a recording. You got the impression, from their messages, they were excited to have direct contact with an alien like you.
You wished you could go to the surface yourself, but part of the ceremony dictated the number of attendees – too many could be seen as a threat.
But it had all gone well, and when the captain, ambassador, and Spock had retuned, the captain had actually called you to his ready room to thank you.
You had floated through lunch, and floated through sending out papers you had written and the ambassador had checked on a second contact.
But now it had all gone wrong; you had meant to send the draft trade agreement to Retari. Instead you had just sent your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of their position, based on confidential Federation data.
Everything had been going so well. But now you’re so screwed.
“Fuck,” you repeat. Just as the door opens, and—
“Excuse me, Cadet?” Of course it would be Spock.
Your hands fly up to cover your mouth. You wish, for the second time, that the floor would open up and swallow you. How do you keep embarrassing yourself in front of him? Of course it doesn’t.
“Lieutenant, I’m sorry for my language. I—I just made a huge mistake. The biggest. I just sent the wrong file to the Retari, full of confidential information, and I have no clue what to do. I need to call the ambassador, but she’s having coffee with the captain, and Number One said you never disturb them at this time, but the Retari negotiation is screwed, and I’m screwed, I’ll be sent back to Earth for sure, I—”
He holds up a hand. “Spock to Nicola. Can you pause outgoing messages please? I’ll explain later.”
“Acknowledged. Messages paused. Let me know when it’s okay to resume.”
“I will. Spock out.” He turns to you. “Our proximity to the star is lowering our available bandwidth, due to its high level of emissions. Therefore the queue for messages to be sent is longer than usual. May I?”
You stand up, stand back, and he sits and logs into the computer. You can’t quite follow his commands, but—
“Computer, display outbound message queue. Authorisation Spock Zeta 230.”
A list of messages scrolls across the screen and you exhale in relief. “There,” you point over his shoulder to the one with routing information for Retari, belatedly realising you have leant a little... close.
“Computer, delete message with ID 34 alpha 2.”
“Message will be permanently deleted. Confirm?”
“Confirm.” Spock’s voice is calm and controlled as ever.
“Message deleted.”
“Thank you, Spock. So much. You really saved me.”
He stands, and you step back. You think you see something almost amused in his eyes. “You exaggerate, but do take better care next time.”
“I will. I’ll tell the ambassador, too.” At least, you think, you won’t have to interrupt her coffee break to do so.
“Spock to Nicola. You may resume the outgoing messages.”
“Thanks, I will. Nicola out.”
“Um, Lieutenant, I guess you originally came here for a reason? Can I help you with something?”
“I am returning to the surface to oversee the next round of atmospheric scans. I wanted to invite you to accompany me; there is someone who would like to meet you in person.”
You grin. “Pamedra? I didn’t think I would get to go see them. They were so helpful...” But no. First things first. “I would love to come but I better tell the ambassador about all this, and get her permission...”
*
“So I hear we nearly had a diplomatic incident on our hands,” Chris says as he carries the plates over from the kitchen.
Leah winces slightly. “I suppose it was to be expected. The cadet’s honeymoon period had to end at some point. But I was pleased that she came out and told me before Spock had a chance to.” She opens the wine and pours it out – the real stuff today. It’s been busy. She’s earned it. “I’ve had a word; a strong one. And I took her through my file handling system too. I don’t think she’ll do it again; she gets the magnitude of the issue, and she saw the logic of my system straight away.”
“Lucky for her that it was Spock who sorted it out rather than Number One. Apparently Spock called the bridge to have outbound messages stopped, and Una had the conn... she was all set to have a—a talk, too, but Spock convinced her it wasn’t necessary.”
Leah raises her eyebrows at that. “Did he?”
“She’s made a good impression on him it seems. This afternoon notwithstanding. He said, after he had been down with the Meluran that her presentation on them and their ceremony was ’insightful’.”
“Well that’s good to know...” Leah takes a bite of her chicken, taking a moment to savour the creamy garlic sauce. “Oh did I tell you Hannah Zimmerman called this morning?”
*
It’s 0605 and you sit, cross-legged, on the bed, every solid you own dumped out in front of you. You know it must be here somewhere.
“What on Earth—?” Adriana says, as she walks in from the bathroom. “What are you doing? How do you have so many solids? I’ve got… maybe ten? Tops? There’s got to be... sixty there? More?”
“It’s a diplomat thing. Or maybe it’s a me thing. I accumulate data. You never know when it’s going to be useful.” You find the solid you want and hold it up for a moment, before tucking it into your pants pocket. “And here it is: how I say thank you to Lieutenant Spock.” You eye Adriana, and she eyes you, her pretty face apprehensive; she knows you’re about to ask her for something.
“Spock is your department head. Do you know what time he has breakfast? I may need to skip out on our run this morning...”
“With all your work with the senior staff you probably see him more than me. Although Lieutenant Llewelyn did let me present our proposal for the Meluran sun device to him.”
“To be fair you did do nearly all the work,” you say as you sweep your solids back into their case. You can sort them later.
“Still, she could’ve taken credit, and she didn’t.” Adriana’s dark eyes are considering. “I think he was impressed. But It’s hard to tell. And I have no idea about his breakfast habits, sorry.” She starts stretching. “I guess I’ll see you later?”
You head to the mess hall, still quiet at this hour, and take a seat where you can see the door. You don’t have to wait long; evidently the reason you and Adriana haven’t seen Spock at breakfast before is that he eats even earlier than you.
“Excuse me? Lieutenant?”
He looks at you, a little puzzled. “Good morning Cadet. Can I be of assistance?”
“Well actually I wanted to thank you again for yesterday. And perhaps offer you a taste of home? You’re from Shi’kahr, right?” He nods, and you finger your solid, although you’ve already uploaded the program to the synthesiser. “Plomeek soup. From a restaurant recommended to me when I visited Shi’kahr. It’s not the same as being there, but I think it’s pretty good.”
He raises a brow at you. “Thank you, Cadet. I will try it.”
He sits at the table you just vacated, and you go to the synthesiser and return with two bowls of the soup. You take a mouthful and watch, apprehensive, as he does too. You’ve heard the soup described as bland, but it’s breakfast food; personally you wouldn’t want anything spicy at this time in the morning. You think that bland is the wrong word, anyway. It’s subtle: savoury, with hints of flavours and spices you can’t name.
“This is... very good, Cadet.” He takes another spoonful. “Can you tell me how you come to have this program? I am struggling to imagine a Vulcan sharing it with you.”
“I told the restauranteur it was logical.” You grin. “It was the summer after my first year at the academy – I got a placement at the Federation Embassy on Vulcan for a few weeks. I wasn’t doing anything important, just filing, helping out on the front desk, fetching and carrying – that sort of thing. I don’t think the Ambassador was there, even. But I did get to see a bit of Shi’kahr.
“One of the Vulcans working there recommended this particular restaurant to me; most of the humans ate from the synthesiser, but I wanted real food. And I liked the soup so much, I said if they let me create a synthesiser program for the Embassy, the humans there may try it and share it, and because real food is almost always better than synthesised, eventually they would want to try the real thing.”
You take another mouthful. “I think my logic was sound; I got a technician to put a Vulcan Specialities section at the top of the synthesiser menu and by the third week I was doing a daily breakfast run to the restaurant.”
“Fascinating,” he says, after staring at you for a moment.
*
You go through your day taking a lot of care over your work; the ambassador’s words from yesterday about filing things correctly and paying attention are still ringing in your ears. But you can’t quite stop thinking about Spock. You had talked about Shi’kahr over breakfast; you noticed he didn’t mention his family but you compared notes on the things you’d seen, both of you agreeing that Vulcan’s Forge was a place you’d enjoyed spending time.
But you had to stop yourself from staring at him during the briefing as he gave his update on the Meluran situation, although you did make a note to tell Adriana he’d mentioned her by name.
You finish up all the work the ambassador had left for you well before she is back from her afternoon coffee break, and you catch yourself thinking about Spock again.
You had enjoyed breakfast with him, and you would really like an excuse to spend more time with him, but this morning aside, he’s seen you drop all your PADDs like a clumsy child. He caught you swearing at a stupid mistake when you should have been sorting it. Not forgetting that he’s a senior officer, and you’re a lowly cadet. He’s Vulcan. You know relationships are a no-go subject with them. There is absolutely no way he is interested.
But still, that nagging little part of you says, he didn’t need to ask you down to see that Meluran, even if it had been at Pamedra’s request. He hadn’t had to help you out yesterday. And he hadn’t needed to be so nice to you ahead of your first briefing address.
You sigh. When you were a teen and you were trying to work through an unrequited crush you’d spend time on the piano, getting lost in music. But there isn’t a piano here and you’re on duty still, even if you have a few minutes to kill.
You need a good dose of cold Vulcan logic. Perhaps you should reread your Surak. Give yourself a mental splash of cold water. You download the text from the computer onto your personal PADD.
“Cadet?” You jump.
“Ambassador!” You stand. “Sorry, I was... um. I modified the pro-forma for the Crassian second contact, and I made notes on the latest version of the Retari treaty. They’re here. I also compiled the background information you requested on dilithium use for Xahea, and the data on the projected yields for those crop varieties on Kaminar is here too.”
“Thank you Cadet, that’s good work.” The ambassador smiles as she walks round her desk. You always enjoy this part of the day; you like how spending time with the captain always seems to leave her in a good mood. You’ve thought that it would be nice to have that yourself. With Spock, that traitorous voice in your head adds, but you ignore it, sitting back down.
“What were you reading just now? It seemed like it was pretty absorbing.”
“I was, uh... rereading the Teachings of Surak? In English, I’m not good enough at Vulcan – I only know the basics. I read them originally when I was on placement at the Federation embassy there.”
“Skon’s translation?”
You nod.
“Did you know he’s Spock’s grandfather?”
You shake your head. “I hadn’t made the connection. I should have, I suppose.” You frown a little.
“It’s not the most obvious thing to think of while reading Vulcan philosophy...” her brows draw together a little, studying you, but her expression soon clears.
“Let’s take a look at that pro-forma.”
*
“I caught the cadet reading Surak earlier, by the way. Do we think she’s good enough for Spock?” Dinner is long over, and Leah should get up and clean up the remains of their Chinese food, but she’s so comfortable.
Chris laughs. “Our boy could probably do worse.”
“Worse than a diplomat? It seemed to work out well enough for you, darling.” She turns and frowns, mock-reproving.
“Touché. But that’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“On the Republic I would have invited them both for dinner. Probably with another couple. I often found that encouraging people to spend time together outside work was enough to ignite that spark.”
“We shouldn’t interfere, love.” Chris tightens his arm around Leah, and she relaxes back into him.
“I know, I know. It’s just it’s written all over her face every time she looks at him, and… I don’t think he’s indifferent. I just don’t think he’s worked out what to do about it.”
“You’re right, but...” he sighs. “I’m the captain. I’m not going to say I’ve never interfered, but I have to use a light touch. And that really wouldn’t be.”
“I suppose arranging a turbolift malfunction would be out of the question?”
He laughs again. “Too obvious, love. Though talk to Spock about turbolifts; you never know, you might get him to tell about his first day aboard this ship.”
She turns in his arms to look at him. “There’s a story there?”
“And it took me years to get it out of him. Years.”
“Bet you I can do it in weeks.”
“You’re on.”

Other Side of the Coin
Pairing: Mirror Christopher Pike x Mirror OC
Rating: Mature
Two young girls played a game of tag, maneuvering through the trees of the small park, giggling and teasing. A chance meeting a few days ago, and two young girls who lost their parents bonded with them creating a friendship. The girls continued chasing one another until the sun began to set.
“Michael!” a stern male voice called out to one of the girls.
“That’s Lorca, he’s going to drag me back home.” Michael sighed sitting in the dirt. Artemis plopped down beside her leaning her head on her friend's shoulder.
“”I wish I could go with you.”
“Maybe we can do a sleepover!” Michael said excitedly.
“It's against the rules, the headmistress says we can’t burden other families.”
“I was an orphanage once too, maybe my mother can be convinced to adopt you as well.”
Arty didn’t dare get her hopes up, she was quickly learning Michael was full of new and exciting things but Arty had yet to be permitted to join her. The Emperor’s daughter seemed to live such a happy, privileged life. What Atermis wouldn’t give to have just a small portion of that, a parent or even just Michael as a sister. That would be enough for her, but the Headmistress constantly reminded her that no one wanted someone else's burdens.
“There you are, it's time to go.” The man Michael had mentioned was Lorca approached the two young girls and halted when he saw the other girl. “Who is this?”
“This is my best friend Artemis, she’s an orphan at the Heritage Home.”
“Hello Artemis,” he gave a polite smile but motioned for Michael. “It’s time to go.”
“Can she come with us,” Michael pulled Artemis into a tight embrace. “Please, I’m sure I can convince my mother to adopt her.”
“That is a conversation you should have with your mother before you bring strays home.”
Arty shied away from Michael, making the other girl sad as she was dragged away. A silent tear fell as Arty returned to the headmistress and tried to stay out of everyone’s way. The next day she was called into her office, afraid she was in trouble for something. Instead she found the man from yesterday, Lorca, and the headmistress speaking in hushed tones.
“May I have a moment with her?” he asked. The headmistress nodded and left the two alone, Arty sat on the chair beside him, nervous of what was happening. “Hello again.”
“Hello sir, am I in trouble?”
“Not at all, should you be?” she shook her head not intensely. “I thought we’d have a little chat, Michael says you want a family.”
“I do but the headmistress says I can’t infect others.”
“How about a deal?”
“What kinda deal?”
Downing the alcohol, Arty’s eyes scanned the crowd gathered to celebrate Michael’s latest achievement. Promoted to Captain, receiving the Master of Poisons Award, and receiving the ISS Shenzhou no one could be prouder of her achievements than herself, well maybe her mother as well. She watched Michael make the rounds, exuding pomp and superiority over the gathered guest but her eyes kept slipping. Everytime she followed Michael’s gaze her stomach flipped, feeling sick and hated those who dared claim to be close to her.
“Pace yourself Arty, you don’t want to get wasted before the main event.” Gabriel whispered in his daughter's ear as he grabbed her glass from her.
“I’m simply here to observe as my best friend's achievements are acknowledged by all.”
Gabriel gave her a stern look at her apathetic tone, he knew the two were still friends but as they’d matured into grown women both had begun keeping secrets. Artemis was no fool though, her father had taught her well and she learned rather quickly that her own father had seduced her best friend. The stolen glances passing between them tonight was all the confirmation she needed, no wondering she was having a rough night.
“Atermis, I’m glad you could make it,” Michael appeared embracing her friend before turning to Gabriel. “Captain Lorca.” she nodded.
“Captain Burhamn, congratulations on the promotion.”
She had to bite her lip to stop herself from scoffing. Years of practicing to be the perfect inflator, perfecting composure, and learning the many ways to manipulate those around her and her teacher for all that was a monster. Not the same kind of monster his grand plan was going to overthrow but a monster nonetheless. And despite that knowledge, she still loved him. He’d truly held up his end of the deal, he’d been a real father since the day he brought her home. Moving with him from planet to planet while he carried out his tasks for the Emperor, he’d still made time to ensure she had the best schooling, he’d even tutor her in some of her weaker subjects.
She wanted to cry, was the love she thought they both held for her been a lie her whole life? Was she just a means to an end for him? At least with Michael she knew things started off with pure intentions, it didn't matter if they veered or not.
“I’m going to grab another drink, would you like anything?” she sweetly asked the two who were engrossed in a conversation about the latest rebel assault.
“No thank you.” they said in sync.
Grinding her teeth she made her way to the bar, “Something stronger.” she demanded. As she waited for her drink she noticed a familiar form enter the party. Captain Christopher Pike flanked by his XO Una Chin-Riley, this was a surprise. The ISS Enterprise rarely made an appearance to the royal palace, flowery words of being too busy displaying the might of Terran’s but Gabriel had told her he thought Pike didn’t care much for the Emperor.
She watched as Pike whispered in his XO’s ear and they headed in different directions, the XO towards a group of high ranking officials while Pike headed her way. She’d only met him once or twice but everytime he was full of laughter and jokes, even while covered in the blood of an enemy.
“Commander,” he nodded as he sat beside her at the bar.
“Captain,” she acknowledged. The bartender handed her drink and she wasted no time, watching from her peripheral vision as Pike looked her up and down.
Gabriel had instilled long ago in her that everytime she entered the public she had to dress to kill, both literally and figuratively. Tonight she was wearing a skin tight, black, leather cocktail dress pair with golden stilettos, her hair pinned expertly up and out of her eyes. She knew her long lean legs flexed with each step and the heels made her ass look even rounder, she was hot. That didn’t mean she was stupid, she had a blade tucked under her brassiere.
“Haven’t seen Enterprise in some time,” she said casually. Any topic to distract her from the obvious flirting happening across the room.
“Is that disappointment I detect?” he teased.
“Well it seems unfair that only your crew is graced with your presence regularly.”
He leaned closer to her, pushing a non-existent hair off her shoulder, “If you want to see me regularly, all you have to do is ask.”
“Is that all?” she giggled, rolling her eyes.
“That and maybe tell me your name.”
“Artemis.”
“I don’t warrant a surname?”
“I don’t have one,” the question in his eyes made her continue on. “Unless you’d like to share Pike.”
“Slow down there, I was just looking for sex.” he laughed and she wasn’t sure if it was a joke or not. Something about his eyes, he didn’t believe the words he was saying but anything more than just sex was dangeorus in this world. Forming connections was voluntarily offering weakness that anyone could and would exploit. Was that why Enterprise kept its distance? To protect their connections?
“Then what are we waiting for?” she finished her drink as Pike’s finally arrived. “I have a room on deck 4, section C, room 103.”
A communicator was beeping but she couldn’t care less, she hadn’t been this relaxed in a long time. She’d been thoroughly satisfied last night, resulting in her being able to sleep and truly feel refreshed. Even more surprising, her bed mate hadn’t left yet, in fact she was currently spooning her in their naked, asleep state. But the insistent chirping was becoming too much to ignore. She shifted and heard him grunt, trying to pull her back into his arms.
“You or me?” he asked. The rough sound of his voice still deep with sleep woke her up quickly, wanting a repeat of the previous night. She reached up and grabbed her comm and saw it was her father.
“Me, it can wait.” she put it back down and rolled on top of him. Looking down he was more awake now but still  had sleep in his eyes. She leaned over him, nibbling on his lip when the comm went off again.
“Answer the damn thing so we can finish what you're starting,” he ordered.
Remaining on top of him she reached over, her beast rubbing against his cheek as she grabbed the device and resumed her previous position.
“Where are you?”
“My room.”
“What happened to you last night? Do you accomplish-”
“I overdid it, and if you don’t mind I’d like to sleep the hangover off.”
“We need to discuss-”
“Later,” Pike began rubbing her tights watching her face as she spoke. “Goodbye father.” she snapped the comm closed and tossed, intending to lean back down and find his lips. Instead she found herself flipped on her back, arms pinned above her head by one of his hands while the other traveled between her legs.
“Lorca is your father?” The topic of conversation is not one she would have choose with his fingers sinking deep within her.
“Yes,” she moaned and he bit her shoulder.
“So your surname is Lorca.”
‘No.”
“How does that work?”
“Do you want to talk about my family or fuck me?”
“Can’t I do both?” he teased.
“You may be able to but I can’t.”
“I always liked a challenge.”
He dove in, determined to get his answer and his pleasure.

The Enterprise Ball.
Tumblr media
Hey together!
So today it gets a bit cheesy and romantic and it leads to something that Cathrin needs to do before she could start her new life. I hope you enjoy it and leave me a little FB, if you don´t mind.
@bold-brave-courageous @allthetrek @reeselivesforeverinmyheart
The lobby of the Starfleet headquarters was polished to a high gloss, countless round tables lined up around the dance floor, set in white and dark blue. It was the perfect blue. It didn´t hurry up, didn´t bite with the black of the gala uniforms and still looked happy. Chris smiled, for that Number One had a sense, that he had to let her. Above all, he was grateful to her for relieving him of these tasks so readily. He stood at the bar, a glass in his hand, his eyes wandering around the room, hanging on to one of the dancing couples.
Cathrin was laughing at something that Spock must have said, or she laughed about him, both could be possible, then she looked down, shoved her shoe up to Spock's, and pushed it a little aside. He followed her gaze, then nodded and he turned her a bit. The Vulcan seemed to try his best to follow her instructions. He had to keep this picture in mind. There was something Spock couldn´t do. Smiling, he took a sip.
"Captain Pike." He looked up and faced one of his new crewmembers. Lieutenant Parmena, if he remembered correctly, one of Louvier's new engineers. "May I introduce you to my parents?" "Of course." As he was expected, he shook hands with the older, proudly-groping couple, exchanged a few words with them before disappearing with their daughter, and Parmena continued to introduce more crewmembers.
"All right." Chris looked to the side. Boyd leaned against the bar and waved to the bartender. "A martini, please." He grinned at him. "I think you danced with every female officer who asked you for a dance today, just as the protocol demands." He accepted the martini glass. "By the way, I noticed that some of my nurses and paramedics put a very fast soles on the floor." "I noticed that too." Chris also ordered another drink.
"Why didn´t you ask Cathrin if she's dancing with you?" Boyd pointed to the front. "She is a wonderful dancer. Seriously! I wonder how she got Spock to do it. "He stole a glance at his captain. "It would be just a dance Chris, why you are so nervous?" "It would be the last dance." "Mmmh." The doctor shrugged with one shoulder. "And it doesn´t make me nervous." "Oh no." He looked at the captain's hands. "Looks different."
He squinted at Boyd. Yes, he was right, he was nervous, damned nervous, the last time he had had such a fooling around was before his promotion to captain. His eyes moved back in her direction. She had her hair pinned up, a flower stuck behind her right ear and the dress she was wearing made her eyes shine even more. It was violet, getting darker at the hem, glittering slightly. It was strapless, nestled perfectly around her curves before the skirt became puffy and seemed to float her. She looked stunning, just like last night, but for him, she always did.
A throat clearing forced him to get away from the sight. "A few seconds longer and it's noticeable." "You two never told me, what I have done to deserve you both?" On his other side was now his first officer, and she wore a ball gown that had already attracted a lot of attention. "Destiny." Boyd toasted her. "Karma." Una replied.
"I'm inclined to believe you both." Chris shook his head, laughing. He was lucky he had them. That he had just made a fatal mistake, he noticed a few seconds too late.
"Good to hear." Una turned to him. "Come on, if you stand around here longer and do nothing, I'll grab you by your collar and drag you over there personally. I've been looking at this for about two weeks now, and as lovely, charming, and sweet as it has been, it's starting to annoy me." He stared at her stunned, Boyd on the other side made no effort to hide his amusement. "There's a wonderful, funny, gorgeous." "I wonder when you running out of adjectives?" Boyd now get a look of evil and decided to shut up for now. "Lovely woman, who seems to have no problem with all your quirks and neuroses." "I have no quirks and neuroses!" Pike grimaced. "Of course not." "No, not at all?" She grinned briefly, then put her finger on his chest and began to poke at him with each word. "You'll go over there now, ask here to dance and you'll damn well turn your head off and listen to your heart!"
Chris and Phil stared at the usually so level-headed Una. She took a deep breath, gave a smile and took a sip of her champagne. "Commander." Boyd put down his martini glass. "I would be thrilled and delighted if you would do me the honor of dancing with me." "Doctor, it would be an extraordinary pleasure."
Boyd grabbed her hand and they sauntered away. Chris looked behind them and again his eyes were fixed on Cathrin. Ambassador Sarek was talking to her. He realized that she was a little intimidated, but barely noticeable, he could only tell because she had started playing with her bracelet. Then Sarek left and she started to look around. A smile played around her lips as she spotted Phil and Una, then she turned and left the ballroom way outside. Unfortunately, he had not been paying attention and again Una had caught him, she pointed behind Cathrin, before she turned back to Boyd continuing their chat.
Chris turned around and could barely see Cathrin disappearing through the glass door and heading for the harbor wall. Was he really so stupid that he was still standing around here? If he couldn´t be sure of her, of whom then? She knew what was going to happen to him, he reminded it as if it had been yesterday when she lay beside him in his bed, looking at him before he finally fell asleep.
That's how he had found her when he woke up. She had curled up next to him, covered herself with his jacket, and eventually lost the fight with fatigue. She had held his hand, keeping in silent because he couldn´t say anything, holding him tight when he felt that what he had seen would instantly drive him insane, but somehow she had managed to keep him upright, he was here now, as he had always been, but at the same time something was missing.
This morning came back to his mind and he could not help but smile. It had felt so damn good. His hands on her skin, her soft lips wandering over his body as she whispered his name. He started walking, also left the hall and followed her outside. She leaned against the harbor wall, her gaze going out into the bay, then up into the sky. He wished for a camera at that moment, but he was sure he would never forget that image anyway. He took a deep breath, now or never.
****
I heard the music behind me, the clinking of the glasses, mixed with the conversations and laughter of the company of the ball. I leaned a little against the harbor wall and looked out to the sea. The light breeze blew over my skin and although it was not really cold, it let me shiver briefly. The stars were twinkling with the lights of the city, there should be more fireworks, the weather couldn´t be better, but probably no coincidence. "Did you found something that you like?" I glanced over my shoulder and saw Chris standing diagonally behind me. That he catched my eye very well today I didn´t say, instead I smiled at him and looked back to the sky.
"I cannot remember that the sky was so clear in my time." "That was probably not so." Now he stood next to me and looked at me. "What are you doing out here? You miss the whole party. "He pointed back to the hall. "Looks nice from out here too." I turned around, leaned against the wall, then smiled at him, he back. "Are you telling me something?" "It depends on what." Pike winced. "Where does the pronounced vein of the Federation for Kitsch come from?" "Some call it romantic." He finished his glass and set it next to him. "Try to see it that way." "Mmmh."
I did him the favor and looked into the hall. Couples danced with each other, a happy smile on their faces, others also walked around, they laughed. "I think I know what you mean." "When space travel was still in its infancy, this was often the crew's last opportunity to see their loved ones." I turned my attention to him as he continued. "Then they had to leave each other, often for many years, many had recently married, seen their children for the first time or were confronted with the loss of family members. This was supposed to be something they could think back to when the odds were bad, that if one left hope or everything seemed futile, one would survive the next mission. " He looked at me. "It became a tradition for the ships that went to deep space exploration." "Yeah okay." I leaned against him for a while. "If you say it like this, it's romantic." "You see. All a matter of perspective." I felt him put an arm around my waist and pull me close, and I put my hand on his chest. "But it will be a bit cheesy now." "I thought we were agreed for romantic?" He let go of me, got in front of me and then handed me his hand. I looked at his hand first, then up at his eyes. "The last dance belongs to the captain." My eyes wandered towards the hall and I realized what he just said. In the background, I heard a song start that I knew too well. "I can even choose the music for that." I smirked and had to close my eyes for a moment.
"Cathrin, would you do me the honor of dancing with me?" He smiled slightly as I looked back at him. I only hesitated for a second, then raised my hand and put it in his. He looked relieved in an incredibly sweet way, then pulled me to him, turned and guided me slightly with him. My heart started beating hard and the craziest thing about it was that I didn´t even know exactly why. I let him lead me into the hall, through the people who looked at us, but I didn´t care.
Chris stopped, turned to me and as he pulled me to him, he put his hand behind my back. I placed mine on his shoulder and was guided by him when he started to move me to the beat of the music.
"How many times have you done this?" As he turned me back a little, I pressed closer to him, feeling like I couldn´t be close enough to him at that moment. "A few times." He smiled a little, then looked down a bit and directly into my eyes. "But I've never been as nervous as I am today."
He gently moved his thumb over the free skin on my back, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a moment. I felt it tingle all over my body and I was sure he could feel under his fingers how goose bumps spread on me. When I looked back at him, somehow he had come closer to me and it was still too far away anyway. Again I had this desire to kiss him, to hold him and never let go, just now it was almost overwhelming, but somewhere in me, there was still a little thought that maybe that was just attributable to the moment.
But in his eyes I found something that silenced this little voice and wiped it aside once and for all. And I realized that he was probably just scratching the courage that I lacked. I saw his mouth twitch briefly, then he leaned toward me. He didn´t get any further, because the song ended and the whole hall started to clap. The couples who joined us broke away from each other and turned around so they could watch fireworks outside. "I don´t want to let you go." I leaned against him, too. "Not now." I felt his forehead against mine. It was already cracking outside and I knew that the protocol actually required Chris to join his crew. "You don´t have to." He smiled at me, then released his grip from my back and pulled me out of the square by the hand he was holding. The sky was already shining in the most incredible colors, all eyes were turned upwards, only Number One looked at us briefly, as we stepped outside.
I cursed the little kid in me who couldn´t help but look up with wide eyes. Chris was behind me. Just when I wanted to protest that he let go of my hand, he put his arm around me and pulled me tight. Grateful for the warmth, I snuggled up to him and put my hands on his. His head was leaning against the back of mine and I could feel his breath brushing my neck. "So you're into fireworks?" I smiled as I heard his voice right at my ear. "You not?"
******
The transporter beam disappeared and we were back on the Enterprise. I took a few steps, then sat down and took off my shoes. Chris gave me a grinning look, then he reached out a hand and helped me get up. "Oh yes, that's better." I raised my shoes. "Two hundred years, but you didn´t manage that?" "Not my department." He winked at me, then offered his arm like he did before, and again it tingled all over my body as I put my hand around his arm and he led me out of the transporter room.
"That was a really nice evening." I smiled at him. "Same with me." Chris closed his fingers around my hand. "Why did you just disappear today?" "For my defense, I didn´t want to wake you." I laughed a little. "You looked so satisfied, so peaceful." "Maybe because I thought you were lying next to me." I had to smile. "Or I remember what we did before we fell asleep." "You fell asleep." "I'm pretty sure I saw you close your eyes." He pulled me closer. "You are avoiding me." With a sigh, I rolled my eyes. "I had a few things left to do.” "Are you telling me which ones?" I smiled slightly and stopped when we reached our destination. "Maybe later."
He let go of me and I turned so that I could look at him. "Thanks for the dance." "I couldn´t let you down." I opened the door to my quarters. "What would have happened if I had said no?" Behind my back, I crossed my hands. Somehow I had to stop myself from embracing him, pulling him with me. "You wouldn´t have." Chris stepped closer and stopped right in front of me. I didn´t force myself to look him in the eye, however hard it was for me. "What makes you so sure?"
He raised his hand, put a finger under my chin and lifted it gently. Now, I couldn´t help but look him in the eye, and that almost threw my intentions overboard. "I just know." He smiled that stunning smile and I hoped I did as well. "Cathrin." I stopped him from tapping his lips with my fingertips, then put my hand to his cheek and stood on tiptoe, kissing his lips softly. I could see him closing his eyes, but I didn´t give him a chance to return the kiss. "Good night." With a heavy heart I let go of him, turned around and disappeared into my quarters. As soon as the door closed behind me, I leaned against it and lowered my head. "Oh damn."
Had I still had doubts that I had fallen in love with him over both ears, this moment would have just wiped them aside. My heart was beating so hard that I felt it was going to jump out of my chest and everything about me, wanted to turn around, jump into his arms and hope he would never let me go, but I was up for today I would have to do something else and I would have to do that otherwise I wouldn´t be able to continue. So I broke away from the door and went to change my clothes.
*****
Chris closed his eyes and felt her lips on his only seconds later, but before he could react, she had wished him a good night and was gone. He stared at the spot where she had just stood, her scent still in the air and he could see her right in front of him, with her stunning smile and sparkling eyes. Had he been so wrong?
He would have betrayed that she felt the same as he did, damned he was so sure that he had wanted to kiss her in front of everyone and only his decency had prevented him from doing so. He tilted his head slightly before shaking it. What didn´t fit into the picture here? Frustrated and a little angry, he didn´t know exactly if he turned around and headed for his quarters.
Every one of her looks, every little touch of her, had made a tingling sensation through his body and made him feel what he had not had for a long time, he was almost certain that it had never caught him so badly. He missed her when she was not with him, he felt good when she was near him, and he didn´t want to think about what would happen if she left the Enterprise. He hadn´t wanted to admit it when Number One nuzzled him for asking her to come with him to the Enterprise for falling in love with her. No more than he had believed Boyd when he had also hit the same mark.
The look she'd thrown at him as they danced, he'd gone through him, had hit him right in his heart, and every bit of doubt he had, had dissolved in the air. "You never not be my girl." "I'm never not be your girl."
They'd both probably just been singing along because they'd been so nervous, but yes, she was, to put it so modestly, his girl. So what exactly had just happened that he was standing here now, instead of holding her in his arms and continuing where they left off a few hours ago? He was about to raise his hand to open his quarters when the thought came to him that made him smile. He turned on his heel and walked back to her quarters. Pike listened briefly, she walked quickly back and forth behind the door.. He would not bother her, he would wait until she came out and she would, as sure as he was with his feelings for her.
Chris unzipped his jacket and opened the zipper, then unbuttoned his shirt at the collar. If he was right, he would have to change anyway. He didn´t even have to wait five minutes when the door opened again and she stepped out. "Cathrin." She started a little when he spoke to her, but smiled as she turned to face him.
"Hey." She stroked a strand of hair behind her ear. She wore it now open and instead of the fantastic evening dress, a dark jeans, a bright top and over it a colorful coat. "What are you doing here?" "Until just now I was wondering what I did, that you just let me stand like that." He smiled broadly at her. "I think I have my answer." He raised his eyebrows and she rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry." She smiled at him. "I was determined to do this for today." She pinched her lips, seemingly wrestling with her as much as he did. "That was before, though."
"You shouldn´t do it alone." He pushed away from the wall he was leaning against. "Will you give me five minutes, then I'll accompany you." "Chris, you really don´t have to do that." She glanced at the ceiling, then at him again. "But I want it." Then he handed her his hand and without hesitation, she grabbed it and let him pull her along.

Volte-Face: Chapter 37
Read on A03 or FFN
Pairings: Christopher Pike x OFC (Aalin)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3.4k
Summary: On her first mission as a member of Starfleet, interpreter Aalin Matthews is stranded on a war-torn world ten days’ journey from a haven. Safe passage for Federation personnel has been revoked. Hostile forces are hunting the orphans she is protecting. As she and the children make the dangerous trek, the crews of both Enterprise and Shenzhou work behind the scenes to aid them.
Banned from intervening, from returning to the planet, from scanning for Aalin’s location, Captain PIke must decide whether to ignore the prohibitions or risk intensifying the conflict, a choice complicated by his personal feelings for Aalin. And Spock must come to terms with his decision allowing her to remain behind; should the worst occur, it will be the first time the young lieutenant has lost someone under his command. Both Pike and Spock undertake a dangerous mission among the brutal people who invaded their neighbors in order to protect Aalin and the children and end the war.
Excerpt:
Five Months Ago Enterprise Orbiting Varia
As Aalin woke the wall and overhead lights gradually illuminated. Fluttering lids scratched against eyes like sandpaper, sore muscles protested movement, repeated swallows granted no relief to a dry throat. Skin on her chest and left arm, tender to touch, itched. Her head hurt. She propped on elbows and her eyes swept the space. Its floor to ceiling windows were one-way, transparent into the room, opaque to its occupant. Medical equipment littered the walls parallel to her bed.
A vague memory surfaced, someone at her side smoothing and tucking a blanket around her.
What happened?
Conversation sounded nearby. “... Ms. Matthews … Varian language translation … no solution …” Easing up and out of the bed, feet bare rendering her footfalls inaudible, and clothed in the knee length cross-tied blue gown of Sickbay, she followed the voices.
M’Benga, Chapel, a science officer, and their captain faced a three-dimensional hologram. With more force than necessary, Pike’s hand cast the picture onto a wall-mounted screen which flattened the intertwined patterns into rows of individual images. He pinched the bridge of his nose then said, “Again, Spock, from the beginning using words with fewer syllables.”
“We have little accurate data to work with. All recordings made of Varian speech prior to Ms. Matthew’s collapse were truncated. Software interpreted the frequencies beyond what Federation science believed possible as erroneous and eliminated them.”
“Damn foolish design choice,” M’Benga muttered. “Which came too close to claiming a life.”
Pike couldn’t stifle a slight wince. He said, as if repeating another’s words, “I can’t point to a concrete example, but the recordings of their language seem off.”
“Sir?”
“An observation Ms. Matthews made. Months ago. During a briefing at the State Department. She downplayed the assessment and no one, including myself, followed up on it.”
Reaching the conference room, Aalin stopped at its threshold, behind them, silent, and unnoticed. She tuned out the Vulcan’s continuing presentation instead studying the waveforms displayed on the screen. “Are those voices?”
