Sam, Dean and Cas start investigating a string of angel murders and it turns out there's a group of radical demons who are going around killing angels in an effort to wipe them out for good.

They manage to get information from one of the members that they're tracking angels using the scent of their grace to hellhounds. Even just a tiny trace of it is enough for the hounds to track.

Cas offers himself as bait to draw them out, but Dean immediately suggests he'll do it. He just needs some angel grace inside him.

Cas says no. Sam reluctantly agrees. Dean and Cas have a fight over it. Eventually Cas also reluctantly agrees.

Now all Dean needs to do is ingest some angel grace.....

They go to Dean's room for privacy and Cas gets his angel blade ready to make a cut just as Dean sinks to his knees. And they're like Oh. They clearly had very different ideas of how this was going to go.

oh no i saw a post that's been sticking with me (and lol good luck to me finding it again, so sorry to the person who had the idea, but i'm not sure how much they'd appreciate this tangent anyway so...)

it suggested that it would be neat if angel and demon true forms showed up in mirrors, and omg this could've been fascinating. Especially for Cas and Crowley.

Especially if over time, we could see those reflections shift as the characters developed.

Like after Cas's first explosion when he was resurrected without jimmy in there, would his reflection... reflect that? as his grace faded that first time, would his reflection change any more? What would it have looked like when he was human? Or with stolen grace? And then with his original grace restored, but just a tiny piece of it? And how he struggled with what he is and what he would choose to be for the rest of the series. How would this very visible change have affected him?

Same with Crowley. After he was nearly turned human at the end of s8 would it change? After he was hit with Rowena's spell toward the end of s10? As he worked to regain control of Hell? And then near the end when he wanted to stay on Earth?

I just think it would've been interesting to demonstrate those character shifts and growth arcs in a visually tangible way. What were their "true forms," REALLY.

Castiel's Powers Were Failing

We like to think that Cas ended up living as a human in heaven with Dean in Dabb's original draft, but Look how surprised Cas is when he can heal later in s15. ... After patching up his relationship with Dean. Interesting.

Sam being addicted to demon blood so Castiel offers an angelic fix, love that idea. And propose an expansion on that idea, that Sam gets so used to angelic energy he's capable of manipulating it the same way he can with demons. And angel blood is so much more potent and stronger he doesn't need to constantly drink it to keep these abilities. It's still incredibly taxing and difficult, but imagine everyone's surprise when Sam's able to take down angels without a blade of any kind. That he's able to do it with their grace and diminish it into nothing.

A Study In Wings

By now, both Winchesters have sported wings at some point in their lives.

Sam was first, although his had been a bit frayed, what with the angel possessing him being injured while Sam himself had been close to death. Still, it had been an impressive sight: Gadreel, nearly as tall as Sam, with his athletic, regal posture, his wingspan as wide as the whole room. Sam’s gentleness had shone through the angel’s mask, giving the celestial entity an imposing yet gracious expression. A little brother trapped in one of God’s soldiers gone rogue.

Dean, now, had been an entirely different affair. Sleek, cruel Michael with his cold-blooded elegance and Peaky Blinders style had been a stark contrast to Dean’s valiant pragmatism. Shunning the older Winchester’s ingrained protectiveness, the archangel had been an eerily handsome yet merciless caricature of its vessel, reminiscent only of those parts of Dean that Hell and Crowley had brought to the forefront. He’d looked the archangel part, though, majestic and cold when unfolding those perfectly groomed wings.

However, there had only ever been one family member who’d worn those wings best. 

Dean will never forget Castiel walking into that hangar, sparks flying around his commanding figure, walking through a hail of bullets without even blinking. He should’ve looked harmless in that rumpled trenchcoat, tie askew, hair unkempt. But he didn’t. Dean remembers his breath catching in his throat, remembers the rage he felt as well as the fear and the sheer awe.

“What are you?” he’d demanded, heart pounding in his chest.

“I am an Angel of the Lord,” Castiel had answered, proving it with a full spread of those beautiful, frightening black wings. 

In the years to come, he’d lost them, now and again, those wings, along with his grace and - thankfully -  his blind obedience to a father who really did not care. He’d lost them to side with the Winchesters, to become as breakable and vulnerable and fallible as they were. But, looking back and through it all, Castiel had been the one who’d earned them most.
