How to Write and Talk about Techno and Other Neurodiverse Characters without being Ableist

Tw: Talk of hallucinations, mental health, negative portrayal of mental health in media, mention murder, dehumanaiztion

in my eyes chat is like a much of intrusive thoughts that just pop up in c!techno’s head. this mostly comes from the fact the i, just like cc!techno, have adhd and my intrusive thoughts tend to act like a chat would do so.

however, i do see a lot of portrayals where chat appears as whispears or voices in his ears. this is a very interesting way of seeing it but there’s also ways that this can go wrong and continue to spread harmful ideas around about schizophrenia and mental health.

so, whatever way you see it or write it hears some things to keep in mind and not be ableist

1. the voices do not control him. they do not possess him and force him to do things. this spreads the idea that people listen to their every impulsive thought or every thing they are told to do. especially people who have more violent auditory hallucinations. people already believe that they are dangerous and uncontrollable to do corrupt media. we don’t need more of that.

2. i’ve seen a lot of things where chat gets too bad and blood thirsty and techno has to go calm down. if you want to write about this happening it is fine. this is normal. everyone takes breaks when things get too much. just make sure you are not portraying this break as anything bad, don’t have him go out and kill a bunch of people to cool down.

3. techno has never said anything about the voices being the reason he’s done anything. techno is his own person and can make his own decisions. he is not chat’s puppet in any sort of way.

some more things you can do to avoid being ableist while writing or talking about techno or other neurodiverse characters

1. being monotone does not mean that he is emotionless in anyway

2. he can be scared and can want help

3. if you are writing from techno’s pov make sure to express the difficulty of expressing emotion because there is a lot of internal stuff that does not show up outside

4. if you are writing techno (or dream) as a villain make sure not to imply that part of the reason they are evil is because they feel no emotion or don’t care about other people.

5. avoid calling them an it or any sort of non-human pronoun (unless of course they use it/its pronouns)

6. DO NOT take anything from movies or shows, do your research by talking to neurodiverse people or reading books about being neurodiverse

I had a dream last night that Tubbo Ranboo and Tommy lived together and parented Michael. Tubbo and Ranboo were married for tax reasons. Their next door neighbor was Schlatt and Wilbur who were trying to coparent a baby Fundy. Bad and Skeppy were also there trying to parent a baby Sapnap.

I had a dream where at one point, Karl Jacobs and Sapnap were in it (unclear if it was the CCs or characters, I can only remember their voices speaking) and Sapnap refused doing something and Karl said something like "that is someone who has seen Tommy's (Innit) puppy dog eyes". Sapnap replied that he almost cried at them.

I had a dream/nightmare where C!Slimecicle led C!Karl and C!Sapnap to Las Nevadas out of innocence, as he and Karl were really hitting it off.

However when they arrived C!Sapnap and C!Quackity began arguing while on top of the Needle, which led to Quackity accidentally falling off.

Now this is already a lot, but imagine my fear when my POV suddenly switched into Karl. As I watched Slimecicle reasonably freak out and then attack Sapnap. Only for him to turn to me with a blank stare and say “Let me show you why Slimes are considered hostile mobs.” before running at me with a sword for a hand.

Then I woke up by falling off the bed and I was left with random cramps on my neck :/
