Gothic Literature
As All Hallow’s Eve approaches with much anticipation of costumes, candies, and candles; we are reminded of strange tales that float from ear to ear as the sun sets earlier and the moon rises sooner. Some of the most popular works of literature created the genre of gothic literature, Stoker's Dracula, Shelly’s Frankenstein, and Walpole’s Castle of Otranto.
Tumblr media
Horace Walpole’s novel The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story, first published in 1764, is considered to be the first gothic work in literature. The mention of gothic literature brings up images of foggy moors, castle ruins, dark romances, and flocks of black birds. This is due to the major contributors of the gothic literary canon from the early Victorian period from both the United Kingdom and America; Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters, Edgar Allen Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The gothic literary canon has continued to expand with the works of Bram Stoker, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Annie Rice. There is a modern gothic canon that houses authors such as Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Dame Daphne du Maruier. Beyond the illustrations of vampires, night sisters, and dangerous tinctures, what creates a gothic novel?
There are three main elements that are needed for a gothic novel: an environment of fear, supernatural events, and an intrusion of the past on the present. This differs from traditional fairy tales because the main theme is the present being haunted by the past or past event. The character’s environment contains physical reminders of the past by utilizing dark but picturesque scenery with melodramatic narratives. The central environment can be castle ruins, ancient houses, or encircling forests which all contain some terrible secret. An example of this is Poe’s short story “Fall of the House of Usher.” There are several earlier novels that set the foundation for early gothic literature that were published in the late 1700s. The featured novel The Castle of Otranto by Walpole in 1764; along with other works like Ann Radcliffe’s Mysteries of Udolpho, (1794), Matthew Lewis’s The Monk (1796), and Charles Brockden Brown’s American tale Wieland (1798). In the case of Walpole’s novel which is considered to be the first gothic novel, the subtitle “a Gothic story” was applied to the second edition.
This is likely due to the setting of the novel being in a haunted castle which is said to be inspired by a nightmare that Walpole had while sleeping in his own gothic revival style home, called Strawberry Hill House, in London. Horace Walople was taken with medieval history. The novel itself deals with a castle lord named Manfred and his family and opens with an ominous wedding. The sickly son of Manfred, Conrad is meant to be marrying princess Isabella but is crushed to death by a large helmet that falls from above him. This event is tied to an ancient prophecy:
“that the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it”
The story follows through a series of events that feels reminiscence of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as Manfred attempts to leave his current wife for his son’s betrothed is fear that the prophecy means the end of his family’s line. The full prophecy comes to play out when Manfred mistakenly kills his daughter, Matilda, and a giant ghostly apparition appears to announce that the prophecy has been fulfilled after Matilda’s death and the former peasant Theodore is revealed to be the true prince of Otranto. Manfred repents for his actions and retires to religion alongside his wife, Hippolita.
While much of the story is dramatic, it was well received after its original publication. The portions being featured from the 1800’s edition of Walpole novel with the full title: The Castle of Otranto, A Story. Translated by William Marshal, Gent. From the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto. The title was meant to give the reader’s the impression that the story was much older by seeming that it was found manuscript written in Naples in 1529, to better enforce this notion Walpole chose an archaic style of writing for the novel. The edition in the James Smith Noel Collection also has a frontispiece which is featured with this post.

Ten favorite character thing again.
So, a while back after being tagged by Feadae, I did my best to list ten of my favorite characters from ten separate fandoms. That time I did male characters since that was what was being done. Everyone else had apparently already done Female characters, but I had not. This will likely be equally as dificult as thinking up ten favorite male characters from ten different fandoms. Thank goodness for it being in no particular order. 1). Rose Dyson from the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica This should surprise no one. At least, not fellow Scowlers seeing how often I seem to talk about Rose. She’s great. She’s kind, courageous, definitely not afraid to threaten that jack ass Dee. There’s her kindness in wanting to try and save Hank Morgan. Her desperation to save Professor Sigurdson. However, I think one of my favorite scenes with Rose is her confrontation with Shakespeare. I think it’s because it vaguely reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in Shakespeare’s cannon. Act 3 Scene 1, the interaction between the Heroine Viola/Cesario, and Feste the Fool. In this scene the two stand as equals going back and forth matching wits. Not battling, merely bantering like friends. It’s a wonderful scene and any cuts to it is a mark against a production (or film adaptation. Looking at you Trevor Nunn). Now with Rose and Shakespeare, they aren’t equals in Wit, but they reach equal footing regarding responsibility, meeting expectations, and the ever looming fear that is DISAPPOINTING PEOPLE. Add to that she can be quite humorous, and Rose is simply wonderful. 2). Holo, the Wise Wolf from Spice and Wolf (I forget the author’s name right now). Oh would you look at that? One of the best characters from my favorite anime ended up on this list. How weird. In seriousness Holo is awesome. Her banter with Lawrence is one of the highlights of the show, a matching of wits with the occasional bout of one upping and witty wrestling. But yeah, Funny, witty, clever, Wise (she earns her epitaph at times). Though not without her flaws, such as arrogance, pride, Jealousy, and some gluttony concerning Apples. If you haven’t seen or read Spice and Wolf, I highly recommend you do so. I got two people who generally detest anime to enjoy it (amusingly enough, for the economics. Which are quite enjoyable oddly enough). Beatrice from Much ado about Nothing. Had to include someone from Shakespeare. I struggled over going with Viola, Beatrice, or Rosalind, but decided on Beatrice. Again, witty and sharper than any blade. Not too mention how supportive and caring she is toward her cousin Hero. Also, like Holo and Lawrence, her banter and tongue sparrings with Benedick are one of the best parts of the whole play. There is also the excellent adaptation where Beatrice is portrayed by the amazing Emma Thompson. 4). Granny Weatherwax from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett It was a tough pick between Granny or Magrat Garlick. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure why I chose her over Magrat. Perhaps it’s how she is so sure about herself and things in general that I admire. Also her great mental fortitude, and her occasional moments of deceptive trickery (Cripple Mr Onion in Witches Abroad). 5). Evelyn from the Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan. I don’t know how to talk about Evelyn without delving into Spoilers. Also it’s been a while since I’ve read the books. Suffice to say, she’s a life saver and just plain awesome. 6) Eostra The Eagle Owl Mage, from The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michele Paver. I should have at least one villain on this list. 7). Saber (aka Arturia Pendragon) from the Fate Franchise. I have a few problems with the Fate Franchise. Mostly some idiotic Character designs. But Saber? Saber’s is fine. She has a nice arc, plenty of good moments of awesome and is overall a fun character. At least, in the two thing I’ve seen with her in it (Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works Respectively). 8) Eowyn (is that the right spelling?) from Lord of the Rings. “I am no Man”. What more is there to say. 9) Lester (I cannot for the life of me remember her last name) from All Hallows’ Eve by Charles Williams. Debated of going with Lester or Damaris from The Place of the Lion. They both (from what I recall) go through the process of realizing they are (or were) a Jerk and work to not be Jerks. I think I prefer Lester’s mostly because I understood what was happening in her book more than in Damaris’. 10). Scheherazade from Arabian Nights. Kudos to one of the best storytellers in fiction. Ultimate Kudos to Scheherazade and her one thousand and one nights. Each with their own tales which contained tales within tales and so on. Just amazing. So there’s that. Don’t know who to tag. Make of this what you will.

Nothing quite like the name Pandora’s Lore to peak the shifters interest, even if it was just a bookstore. Still, many of the features pulled at him as his swift feet found themselves lurking up and down the streets of Corinth Bay. He was still new to the town and surrounding cities, waiting to soak it in by familiarizing himself with the streets. Each corner a new intrigue, a new smell. After all, Casper used his keen instincts to lock onto it all and use it to his advantage. Mixed incense fluttered about the ceiling as he entered, antique objects and bookshelves that went on longer than he expected. Emerald hues danced around for a moment before picking up his feet again to do some wandering. Surprisingly there seemed to be a few others inside, each in their respective location scanning the books and pages before making decisions on the content. He was sure that on a good day, a good amount of inspiration could be found within its walls for future scripts but he left it alone today. This adventure was about getting a layout, a sense for the people and culture.
Eyebrow lifted, his sights set on a location marked horror and paranormal. A place like this was bound to have something more rare, although the shifter wasn’t sure what language he might stumble upon. He supposed he could always bother someone with a translation or try out his new app, hands skimming over the binding of each one until something finally stood out. “Oh, wow,” eyes glittering with excitement as he pulled out a copy of Charles Williams’ All Hallows’ Eve. The binding was only lightly beat up given the printing date, though the red coloring had faded slightly to an almost dark pink. Still, a wonderful find in his mind and immediately placed it under his arm.

RHistory AU: Anne Boleyn’s sons and daughters
Born on September 7, 1533. Elizabeth was the first born of Anne Boleyn. Her birth was a disappointment to her father, who was hoping for a son. Growing up she was doted on by her mother. At the age of ten she was to France to continue her education. As a young lady she became very adapt at politics.  She was spoke five languages and was proficient musician   At the age of 16 she married Maximilian II and became the Holy Roman Empress.  Though the two had a happy marriage, Elizabeth suffered many miscarriages. Only three children came from their union: Anne, Catherine, and  Charlotte. When her husband died in 1576, she acted as regent for her daughter Anne. After Anne took the throne, Elizabeth continued to guide her daughter until her death in 1603.
Born on December 16 1534. Prince Henry was the long awaited son that Henry longed for. Henry was the favorite of his father and this drove a wedge between him and Elizabeth. Anne often had to smooth things out between the two. When Henry died in 1547, Prince Henry became king at thirteen years old. His mother acted as regent until he banished her from court when he was 16. The same year he married Archduchess Anna of Austria. Acting much like his father, he soon banished Anna when she did not give birth to a soon. After divorcing Anna he married Margaret of France. They had four sons; Charles, Henry, Francis, and Edward. During his reign Henry brought  England to the fore front of European power. He died in 1580, leaving young Charles to rule.
Born on August 7, 1536. Prince George was the second and last son of Anne Boleyn. Growing up George never shied away from the affection that he got from his father, but he tried to have a relationship with his sister, Elizabeth, she resented him until the last years of his life. As a young man he was an avid hunter and sportsman he spent many years outdoors, and serving as an officer in the English army. In 1570 he met Lettice Knollys, and fell in love. Together they had ten children; Henry, Mary, Anne, Agnes, Elizabeth, George, William, John, Robert, and Margret. The two had a happy marriage until his death in 1625.
Born on October 31, 1537. The triplets, Margret, Mary, and Cecily were born on all Hallows Eve. Were the last children of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. All three girls were educated by their mother and then sent to France in the footstep of their elder sister. All three girls held a tight bond throughout their lives. Margret at the age of 15 she married Philip II of Spain. The two had a turbulent marriage, the two often argued and Philip was rumored to be violent with Margret. Their marriage resulted in only two children, Philip, who died in infancy. Only little Charles lived to adulthood, but died at the age of twenty. Margret died in 1567. Mary  married Eric XIV of Sweden in 1550. Their marriage too, was a turbulent one. When he started showing signs of mental instability she overthrew her husband and became queen of Sweden. Mary then invited her lover and friend Robert Dudley to Sweden. The two had three children together; Robert, Mary, and Elizabeth. Mary died in 1615. The most ill fated of the children of Anne Boleyn was Cecily.  Cecily was rumored to be a witch and had a known love of the occult. At the age of seventeen she married the infamous Ivan the Terrible has his first wife. Their marriage was short lived. The marriage only lasted two years, it was then Ivan discovered the rumors of his wife’s love of the occult. In 1556, he charged her with witchcraft and had her executed in 1557.

Charles Willams movie adaptions
So...a reply to an earlier post reminded me of a thought I had a while ago. How would the works of Charles Williams fair as movies. Or a better question, which could even work as movies? Having read five of his novels I’ve occasionally given it some thought. I doubt Descent into Hell would work all that well as a film. That might just stem from me not enjoying it as much..that’s probably it. Many Dimensions probably wouldn’t work because of just how much time is spent in people’s heads...among other things. All Hallows’ Eve might work. You have a pretty straightforward plot..and there’s room for great visuals... Place of the Lion...hm...still in people’s heads a lot...however, one could have a blast with the Personifications of Strength and Beauty. Not to mention there’s the possibility of perhaps updating it, and being able to show on a great scale the problem these personifications present. War In Heaven might also work. Once again, a easy to follow plot, of less than easy to follow motivations. Room for some great visuals here and there. Probably possiblities for a great performance here and there. The only problem one might face is two of the villains who face a problem similar to Shylock, they are addressed as the Jew and the Greek more so than their names. So if the five I’ve read, War in Heaven could work pretty well as a film, as could Place of the Lion and All Hallows’ Eve. That said, due to the change in medium...a lot would be lost (so many inner thoughts). So, while these three might work well as movies, I’m not suggesting they should. If they were...neat. Remember even bad adaptations have the potential for good by introducing someone to the source material. If the source material is garbage well....I don’t know. Then again, with Charles one could discover him through the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica series and not need to risk poor adaptations. Anyway, make of this what you Will...iams .

Christmas Movies: A Complete Holiday Streaming Guide
By Alec Bojalad and 1 other
Well, because we’re a little crazy, we’re working on an index of every Christmas movie and other piece of seasonally appropriate holiday-themed film available on various streaming services. Just bookmark this page, scroll on through the alphabetical list, hit the links, and it can be Christmas whenever you need it to be! And if you spot some stuff that we missed, just let us know in the comments and we’ll see about getting it all added for you.
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)
Hulu
What is it about the holidays that makes it feel like we’re on the verge of the end of the world? Regardless, if you’re going to capture Christmas season ennui in a movie, you might as well go all out. That’s exactly what British holiday film Anna and the Apocalypse aims to do. Anna is a Christmas zombie musical comedy. Because why have one genre when you can have them all?

Run Review: Sarah Paulson Terrifies as Mommie Dearest in Hulu Movie
By Don Kaye
Ella Hunt stars as Anna Shepherd, a secondary school graduate who plans to embark on a grand travel tour before heading to university. Those plans come to a grinding halt, however, when a zombie infection starts to spread throughout her town. Anna gets together with some friends as they try to survive both the holidays and the encroaching zombie apocalypse.
Black Mirror: White Christmas (2014)
Netflix
Those looking for Christmas cheer won’t find it here. Black Mirror isn’t necessarily known for its happy endings and it’s 2014 Christmas special, “White Christmas” is no different.
Still, there is an audience out there that definitely wants this level of Scroogery. Plus it stars Jon Hamm! “White Christmas” follows three seemingly disparate stories. Jon Hamm is Matt, a mysterious man with a mysterious job who viewers watch in three different environments: once as a gross pick-up artist helper, once as a digital “cookie” salesman, and once as an occupant in a cozy cabin on Christmas Day.
What do all of these have to do with Christmas? Watch and find out. Then weep for the collapse of humanity.
A Charlie Brown Christmas Special (1965)
Apple TV+ – Arriving Dec. 4
“A Charlie Brown Christmas Special” is one of the most enduring holiday classics in the pop culture canon. Originally airing in 1965 on CBS, it was an experiment from The Coca-Cola Company to see if Charles M. Schulz’s beloved Peanuts characters could carry their charm over to a new medium…and boy could they.
The half-hour picks up with Charlie Brown down in the dumps and unable to capture the Christmas spirit. Thankfully, his friends know just what to do. Soon ol’ Chuck is directing the school Christmas play and nabbing a pitiful Christmas tree with Linus. This is “A Charlie Brown Christmas Special’s” first year as primarily a streaming entity, though Apple TV+ is allowing it to air on PBS on Dec. 13.
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Netflix
If a Christmas movie is only as good as its Santa (surely someone out there abides by this rule), then Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles is one heck of a Christmas movie. This family film produced by Chris Columbus features Kurt Russell ascending to his final form as Hot Santa Claus.

The Best Christmas Movies Available on Netflix

The plot follows two children who are struggling to believe in the magic of Christmas after the death of their firefighter father. But the spirit of the season seizes them when they encounter the ultimate stand-in father figure: Kurt Russell Santa. The Christmas Chronicles is your classic, by-the-book family holiday yarn with a fun actor at the center and elevated production quality. Its sequel is also available to stream on Netflix.
Doctor Who Christmas Specials
HBO Max
If the British know one thing, it’s tea. If they know two things, it’s tea and Christmas specials. Many big-time U.K. television shows have their own excellent holiday specials. Decades-old sci-fi institution Doctor Who, however, takes the cake when it comes to Christmas excellence.
HBO Max has 12 seasons worth of Doctor Who Christmas specials dating all the way back to the modern continuation’s first Doctor, Christopher Eccleston. Each episode is an hour-long treat of Doctor Who and Christmas goodies and should the joy of watching them ever peter out, there are plenty of bonus materials to watch as well.
Frozen (2013)
Disney+
Frozen, an animated movie you might have heard of, technically takes place during summer. But it sure doesn’t feel that way after Queen Elsa freezes the fjord and belts songs about the snowmen she and her sister want to build. Indeed, there is hardly a more festive film for the holidays than this celebration of self-love and familial love. Rather than being the story of a princess falling for a prince, Frozen is about the love between two sisters, Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), and how that bond can transcend fear, isolation, and lifelong trauma like losing your parents at an early age.

Frozen 2: ‘Show Yourself’ Song Was Almost Cut from Movie
By David Crow
Fairly sophisticated stuff for an animated movie, Frozen became a bona fide classic in large part due to its songbook by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, with “Let It Go” standing out as an anthem for self-empowerment and the realization of identity. And if you overlook the fact you heard that song probably five thousand times, it still has that same resonance, which is why children are drawn to its message, as well as Elsa’ irresistible ice powers brought to dazzling life. When you factor in Anna’s own awkward charm, the power the two radiate together is warming in any season.
Home Alone (1990)
Disney+
Another holiday classic from Fox, Home Alone remains a millennial touchstone for this time of year, and a gift that keeps on giving. Yes, everyone remembers the end where Macaulay Culkin tortures two bumbling goons (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) as if they’re Elmer Fudd, but the movie has a lot more going for it than just slapstick sociopathy. Indeed, when Kevin McCallister isn’t being a sadist, this film has an earnest appeal about celebrating the fantasy of a kid living by himself at home.
When his parents leave Kevin McAllister home alone for Christmas—it was an accident!—he has a luxury house to himself that he lounges about as if it were a giant playground with free ice cream, pizza, and R-rated movie viewing parties. Things go a little pear-shaped though when crooks try to rob the joint, but he handles that in glib fashion, all while sweetly pining for his mother. In fact, as you get older, Catherine O’Hara’s trials and tribulations to get back home to her baby boy in time for Christmas are as amusing as Kevin’s hijinks. (John Candy! Polka music!! Polka Christmas music!?!) But probably the reason this is a real classic has a lot to do with John Williams’ eternally heartwarming score.
Into the Dark: Pooka! (2018)
Hulu
The concept of Hulu horror anthology series Into the Dark is a simple one. Starting in October, every month would see the release of a new horror movie, usually revolving around a theme or holiday within that month. So naturally December 2018’s entry, Pooka!, brings its chills to Christmas. Directed by Nacho Vigalondo from a script by Gerald Olson, Pooka! introduces one of the cutest creepiest critter since Gremlins.
Struggling actor Wilson Clowes (Nyasha Hatendi) takes on a job operating a giant fur suit of a toy company’s upcoming holiday season to, Pookah. Pookah has two modes, naughty or nice. Soon Wilson comes to find that the suit is starting to effect his overall mood and the naughty mode may last outside the confines of the suit.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
Amazon
Now if you could only watch one Christmas movie every holiday season, it’s gotta be this one, right? It’s a Wonderful Life has been a winter staple ever since…shortly after its 1946 release. The film infamously took a little while for audiences to catch on they they were in the presence of a classic. And now it lives on Amazon for the time being as the go-to spot for holiday cheer.
If you haven’t watched this movie in a while, it can be surprising just how tenuously tied the whole thing is to Christmas. Though the story of George Bailey begins on Christmas Eve 1945, the movie takes audiences throughout the entirety of his life, Christmas Carol-style. But of course, in the end the angels have gotten their wings and Christmas is in full thrall. Certainly, It’s a Wonderful Life will be all over the traditional TV calendar, but it’s nice to know that it’s on streaming as well for those who just can’t wait.
Klaus (2019)
Netflix
Since the hallowed days of Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated Christmas specials, there hasn’t been much movement or innovation in the realm of animated Christmas movies. Klaus, written and directed by Sergio Pablos, seeks to change all that in Klaus.
This crisply animated feature serves as an alternative history version of the story of Santa Claus. Jesper (Jason Schwartzman) proves himself to be the worst student as a postal academy and is sent to the North Pole where his lack of letter-delivering abilities won’t do anyone any harm. There he discovers Klaus (J.K. Simmons), a mysterious carpenter who lives alone and likes to make handmade toys. Sounds pretty familiar.
Klaus is both a technical marvel and an effective little Christmas story.
Last Christmas (2019)
HBO Max
Shortly after taking in the cheerful trailer for Emma Thompson and Paul Feig’s 2019 holiday hit Last Christmas, the Internet stood up as one and agreed on an important point: there’s a twist in here, isn’t there? And of course, the Internet was right…as it so often is.
Last Christmas features a very prominent and important twist in its plot that you’ll have to watch the movie (or read Wikipedia) to figure out. But twist or no, this is a perfectly enjoyable entry into the modern Christmas canon. Emilia Clarke takes some time off from torching King’s Landing to star as Kate, an aspiring young singer going through hard times around Christmas. That all changes when she meets the alluring and devastatingly handsome Tom (Henry Golding). What follows is a minor Christmas miracle.
The Santa Clause (1994)
Disney+
Tim Allen really was on top of the world in the 1990s, wasn’t he? The star of ABC’s popular Home Improvement sitcom, and just a year away from becoming a Pixar legend in Toy Story, Allen could get any family entertainment greenlit. Thus enters Disney’s The Santa Clause, a movie that posits “what if Tim Allen became Santa?” That’s pretty much what happens when Allen’s schmo-y Scott Calvin inadvertently is responsible for the death of the previous Santa who slips off his roof.
The consequence of Scott’s mistake is he puts on the red and white outfit to finish Santa’s sleigh ride that night, much to the delight of his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd). Little does he know that by donning the suit, he has entered into a “Santa Clause” which means he becomes the big guy—literally so as he gains 100 pounds of weight and a white beard overnight. It’s still amusing now, but our favorite bit will always be David Krumholtz as the no-nonsense North Pole elf from Brooklyn.
Surviving Christmas (2004)
Amazon
One enduring hallmark of the Christmas movie genre is how bad many of its entries are. Of course, there are some well-executed classics that command one’s attention and respect, but for the most part they all blend together into a pleasant cheerful mush that can be on in the background while one decorates their tree.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: November 2020
By Alec Bojalad
But even by the dismal standards of Christmas movies, 2004’s Surviving Christmas is particularly dismal. This Ben Affleck/James Gandolfini starring vehicle very much earns its 7% Rotten Tomatoes score. In a way, however, that makes it a must-watch holiday classic. Affleck stars as a rich advertising executive looking to reconnect with his past. What better way to do so than to pay the current occupants of his childhood home to spend Christmas with them? Much James Gandolfini grumpiness ensues.
A Very Brady Christmas (1988)
Hulu
A Very Brady Christmas was a 1988 made-for-TV movie that brought together the entire original cast of The Brady Bunch save for Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady). Olsen was on her honeymoon at the time and I cant’ figure out if that’s a great reason or a weird reason to miss a once-in-a-generation TV event.
A Very Brady Christmas centers on a very simple and very relatable concept: getting the whole family back together for Christmas. This is a hard enough logistical challenge for a “normal” family, and a damn near impossible one for a family with six kids. Will the Bradys be able to pull it off? Watch and find out!
Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus (1991)
HBO Max
“Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” is one of the most enduring sentences in Christmas history. It comes from an 1897 newspaper editorial in which The Sun (of New York) editor Francis Pharcellus Church responds affirmatively to young Virginia O’Hanlan’s question about the existence of Santa Claus.

This 1991 TV movie of the same name dramatizes the already-quite dramatic story. Charles Bronson, of all people, stars as Church, who is dealing with the death of his wife and the trauma he endured as a war correspondent during the Civil War. It turns out that one little girls credulous belief in the impossible is all that many adults need to get back into the spirit of the season.

@dukeoflogreus PMed me asking for a playlist for Lester Furnival, the ghostly (and female, despite the name) protagonist from Charles Williams’s All Hallows’ Eve!
Before I make this playlist, I should disclaim that I mostly share J.R.R. Tolkien’s negative assessment of Williams the man, and have deeply mixed feelings on Williams the writer, especially this particular novel due to its attitudes towards women and Jewish people. If you think LotR or Narnia could have used a sensitivity reader, Williams’ novels will have you reaching for the Sharpie.
The playlist is mostly impressionistic because it’s been about seven years since I actually read the book.
Billie Holiday, “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You”
Metric, “IOU”
David Bowie, “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)”
St. Vincent, “Los Ageless”
Joy Division, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
This reading of Louis MacNeice’s “The Streets of Laredo”
Give me a literary character and if I’m familiar with them I’ll do a playlist for them!
