percy saying to charon "were all dying.. to some extent" parallels him saying "we're all gonna die... eventually" and that is so funny to me

Underworld Children
So like I did with some of the Olympian gods, here's how some of the children of the underworld tend to look/act.
I hc that, since there are less of these children than other demigod children, they have closer relationships with their parents and often spend time in the underworld with them.
Children of Thanatos:
They tend to have grey or black hair though the coloring of the other parent has sometimes come through. usually curly
Their eyes are usually a light yellowish brown with their iris' being bigger than usually given them a wide eyed look.
Many of his children sometimes are born with silver eyes like Thanatos' twin Hypnos and some of his children
They all are born with avian style wings, though the coloring can be anything from black, silver, white, brown, etc. Bc of magic, they are able to hide the wings when necessary but two scar like lines go down the shoulders where they would usually be.
Fangs. These are retractable to a normal size and length and not all of his children get them.
Can be the type to be cheerfully morbid. Think of how happy the Addams Family is when it's raining and grey outside.
Have a very positive or neutral view on death. Since it is literally their father, they never fear it but tend to see it as just another aspect of life. Like having to go to an appointment.
Children of Hypnos
They tend to have darker colored hair that curls or is wavy
Their eyes are usually silver but some have had yellowish eyes like Hypnos' twin Thanatos
Some, but not all, are born with wings. it's a very 50/50 chance that you will be born with them. They tend to be more unusual colors like purples, blues, pinks, etc.
They very rarely get fangs but their eyes do tend to change more drastically than their other cousins (ie, the whites of their eyes being taken over by the color of their iris' when they use their powers.)
They can either sleep anywhere under any condition or they need very specific conditions to even be able to relax. No in-between.
Usually are very chill and have an easygoing personality.
Can get very irritated if they have not sleep their usual amount and it makes them come across as passive aggressive and rude without meaning to.
Love to meditate and will often do it when bored or if they have to wait for time to pass. During this time they may speak with their father or grandmother, or channel energy into their powers.
Children of Charon
Weirdly enough, they usually have very dark red (like ariel red) or brown hair. almost always curly.
They also have more yellow eyes.
They don't usually have wings but many have fangs. they aren't retractable so they usually smile with their mouths closed and sometimes mumble because they try not to open their mouths often when they speak around mortals or other demigods that might look at them weird.
They tend to be very analytical and like to observe and learn
The most likely to keep a grudge but you'll probably never know they have something against unless you they want you to.
They tend to be the closest with their grandmother, Lady Nyx, since Charon is always in the underworld so when they visit him, they always stop by to see her.
Are the type of people to look miserable while at work but they are actually thriving and really enjoy what they are doing (if it is a job they like, if not then they are actually miserable. help them.)
They just have chronic RBF but very sweet smiles when they give a real one.
All:
They are always very close with their cousins. it can sometimes come across as very cliquey when at camp as they find each other and then group up.
This is also probably because they've usually met eachother when they were young in the underworld so they have more history than with other demigods
They call their grandmother, Lady Nyx: Grandmother, Mother Night, Mother Nyx, Lady Night. It depends on the situation and who is around.
usually more well trained then other demigods when they first get to camp bc, since there is very little of them compared to other cabins, they tend to be partially trained on their powers and some weapons by their parents.
Lady Nyx adores her grandchildren so they will receive at least one small blessing from her in their life time. Usually at birth and it can range from the ability to see in the dark or to manipulate small amounts of darkness or create tiny stars in their hands. Usually something small but fun and it helps them connect to her.
sarcastic little shits. All of them. When in the underworld, they are usually very respectful to other deities they meet but will backtalk and sass in a way that is subtle enough that they can't get in trouble for it. Lord Hades, loves and hates whenever he runs into them bc its funny when they do it to others, but when it happens to him he wants to strangle them a little. (alot)
I don't know to much of Nyx's other children but when I do some research I will be back with the others

Okay. Might be a hot take. But…
Episode 7 was the biggest let down and probably the worst episode of PJO so far.
Crusty was so underwhelming. Why did they know who he was right away? Why didn’t I get Percy cutting his head off? An iconic scene the movies robbed us of and now the show has done that too.
The bathtub line with Charon. And the Italian suits and the pay raise. Where was that? Another iconic scene we were robbed of.
Cerberus was… fine. I guess. Not what I was expecting with Annabeth’s obedience school stuff in the books. It was clunky and random. And Grover losing the pearl in Cerberus was stupid. It would have been way more painful if it rolled into Tartarus instead. (And could provide amazing angst material when Percabeth fall into Tartarus and come across the pearl that could save one of them but neither will leave the other and they lose it once again anyways because angst).
Hades was not Hades-ing. He is supposed to be irritated about infrastructure and overcrowding and Charon demanding more pay. None of that was there. I honestly cannot see this man being the cold father that tells an eleven year old he wishes he died instead of his sister. This Hades is not cold and detached. This Hades is chill and laidback. The Actor looks like how I imagined Hades but he doesn’t embody the character at all.
Why was Poseidon answering Sally’s call? Why? The gods don’t do that. He’s not supposed to even acknowledge the Jackson’s.
Why does Percy know everything? He’s not supposed to know Kronos is involved yet, but he does now? Listen, I’m all for recognizing Percy’s smarts. He’s not dumb. But he’s also not Annabeth. Now if Annabeth was the one working it all out, I’d believe it. She’s book smart, Percy is street smart. We all know this. Percy does not tell Annabeth what’s going on unless he’s coordinating a fight strategy in the heat of the moment. Annabeth is supposed to be the one name dropping monsters. She’s the one who figures this stuff out. I know Percy works it out eventually in the books, but not just based off of what little he knows in the show.
It’s just so so so disappointing. I really want to love the show and I do. Sort of. I love most of the scenes. I love the cast. I just… I’m really struggling with the writing. It’s so clunky and there’s not a good balance between showing and telling. There’s way too much telling and not enough showing. If that makes sense.
And another thing. I know Crusty getting guillotined was probably cut for the same reason as Medusa’s head was unseat when getting chopped, but this show is for the same audience as the books right? So if you don’t think the age group the books are for can handle a couple heads getting cut off, why is it marketed to them? I just don’t get it. It doesn’t have to be graphic or anything. The sword can be clean of all blood. I know that’s normal for kid stuff. But middle schoolers can handle Medusas head. They can handle Crusty’s head. And Crusty could have even happened off screen. Just a shot of Percy swinging the sword and a thud and squelch sound effect. Like… come on.
Also, thanks show runners for totally tricking us into thinking the Ares fight would happen this episode. I don’t know why it didn’t. There’s literally no reason it shouldn’t have. I feel like everything with Luke will feel more rushed next episode now. But honestly almost all the fights have seemed so rushed that I’m not very hopeful about either the Ares fight or the encounter with Luke.

A sad day for the acting community. Whether you’re a guardian, demigod, or just visiting the Continental Hotel — there’s no doubt that Lance Reddick’s involvement heightened the experience. He was talented, charismatic, and had an allure that will never be matched.
Now if y’all excuse me, I’m gonna go cry my eyes out…and maybe reload Destiny. For old times sake.

Chthonic Descent (#4 in my Orpheus and Eurydice series)
The Roman poet Virgil, in his poem “Georgics”, gives a lush description of Orpheus descent into Hades;
“…entering the grove gloomy with black horror, he approached the Manes (dead spirits), and the tremendous king, and the hearts that know not how to relent at human prayers. But the thin shades being stirred up by his song from the lowest mansions of Erebus moved along, and the Ghosts deprived of light… mothers and husbands, and the departed bodies of magnanimous heroes, boys and unmarried girls, and youths laid on funeral pyres before the faces of their parents, whom the black mud and squalid reeds of Cocytus, and the lake hateful with stagnant water encloses around, and styx nine times interfused restrains.”  (-translation from the Latin by John Martyn.)
The word Chthonic in my title is an adjective describing something belonging to the underworld. This would be an apt time to discuss the structure and details of the ancient Greek underworld; the realm of Hades. Our oldest literary source in Homer’s “Odyssey” (700 B.C.) portrays the realm as dark, gloomy, and frightening. A place where all souls go, and lacking skin and bone; have no physical form. The shades (spirits) wander mindless, and without memory.
In Virgil’s “Aeneid” (25 B.C.) we get a much more detailed account of the geography. Our hero Aeneas pays the boatman Charon to ferry him across the river styx, and after passing the three headed guard-hound Cerberus, they eventually come to a crossroad leading to two important realms; Tartarus (an invincible fortress guarded by one of the Furies, where sinners are punished) and Elysium (a sunny paradise where pure souls pursue leisure activities).
As always thanks for looking and reading. Please share this post and I'll toss charon a coin for you. Xoxo
