Icarian Series: Reliquaries
In the late 1980s the well known San Francisco gym The Muscle System began disposing of many of its leather exercise bench covers. For decades the gym had been a social nexus for the gay male population that would later be decimated by HIV/AIDS. Daniel Goldstein saved almost all of the leather skins of the gym’s workout machines which over the years had been worn smooth and imprinted with the human shapes of the thousands of men who had worked out on them. Icarian II and Angel are two of 28 pieces in this series, named for the Icarian exercise machines from which the leather coverings were taken.
The friction and sweat on each of the leather skins over the years had left markings both indelible and mysterious. Seeing these ghostly images one is reminded of the numinous Shroud of Turin or the Sudarium (literally “sweat-cloth” in Latin), the legendary Veil of St. Veronica that bore the face of Christ. Goldstein lovingly mounted each of these pieces of leather as reliquaries. Icarian II and Angel are both document and memorial to the unique social situation at The Muscle System gym. Here gay men had come together to create communities of erotic love and brotherhood. As HIV/AIDS began to take its toll on many men’s bodies, the regimes of weightlifting and exercise allowed them to maintain a sense of control over their physical well-being.

The American Museum of Natural History this weekend will close two major halls exhibiting Native American objects – galleries dedicated to the Eastern Woodlands and the Great Plains – its leaders said Friday, in a dramatic response to new federal regulations that require museums to obtain consent from tribes before displaying or performing research on cultural items.
Museums around the U.S. have been covering up displays as curators scramble to determine whether they can be shown under the new regulations. The Field Museum in Chicago covered some display cases, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University said it would remove all funerary belongings from exhibition, and the Cleveland Museum of Art has covered up some cases.
The changes are the result of a concerted effort by the Biden administration to speed up the repatriation of Native American remains, funerary objects and other sacred items.

Bangtan weekly report
I hope everyone is having a great day so far. It's been a busy week/weekend for Bangtan.
Hobi's Hope On The Street album dropped on Friday and I got my ass to Target first thing to get it!
Tumblr media
The album is amazing, as I knew it would be. Hobi continues to amaze me. I'm struggling to find the right words to express how I feel about him. As I told my bestie, Hobi is the blood and bones of BTS. Namjoon might be the big brain lyricist, the leader and Yoongi might be the constant melody maker and realist, but Hobi makes the whole thing come alive and beat with movement.
The first two episodes of the HOTS docu-series were also amazing. To hear and see him delving so deeply into the thing that makes him who he is and therefore makes BTS what it is brought tears to my eyes.
The Hope On The Street Pop Up location in Seoul is an overwhelming success as were the parties that Hobi threw for fans in LA, Chicago and NYC.
Items from his Hybe studio are on display at the Seoul pop up event and merch that is available there might be the same that will be available on April 9 on Weverse Shop.
Neuron dance lessons were being conducted today and look like they are being filmed. Maybe they will end up in a future Bangtan Episode! If you'd like to see more of what's inside the pop up, you can view this thread on X.

Yoongi has entered the Nonsan Training Center, the same one where Namjoon and Tae did their basic training. Yoongi's basic training will last 3 weeks and then he will return to his alternate service assignment. He looks so good! (sarcasm)
Tumblr media
And it was mentioned that Jin accompanied Yoongi on this day. Jin wasn't going to let Yoongi enter military basic training without having his only hyung in the group see him off.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Jin, his Weverse post for March was 77 DAYS LEFT!

Jimin has made a scholarship available at the Department of Physical Therapy at Dongeui Science University in Busan. According to the information, Jimin made this donation prior to enlisting. Physical therapists are important in his and the members' lives to keep them healthy while performing at such high levels.
Tumblr media
Taehyung was spotted at a soccer match in Chuncheon. He was with a group of fellow soldiers in uniform. However, also present were Manager-nim and several recognizable Hybe security guys. Interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Namjoon shared some moments from his weekend with us. I will assume he is taking his proper holiday now that he's past the 100-day mark of enlistment. He visited Sorol Art Museum in Gangneung, he hugged the sky at a beach, smelled the cherry blossoms and was lurking in and about the Hybe building because he saw a banner from Army. It's possible the banner was installed by the owner of a nearby restaurant.

And I can't leave my precious Kookie off this week's report. We don't know if he and Jimin have taken the vacation that is due them now that they've also passed the 100-day milestone of their enlistment. They've completed just over 20% of their obligation as of yesterday/today and tomorrow they will be promoted to Private First Class II.

We've seen more pics of Bam than of JK this year.

Someone I know mentioned never having been in a museum before. So I’m curious.
I don’t know what’s typical everywhere, but growing up I never lived more than an hour from Chicago, and field trips often featured the Field Museum or the Museum of Science and Industry. I’ve been to each probably a dozen times, including to see the Pompeii exhibit today at the latter.
My dad was a rail fan, so at least one day of each of my childhood summers was spent at train museums.
I’ve been to a collection of art museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Art in Havana, Cuba on study abroad.
I’ve been to a small museum in Oxford, England, which was honestly one of my favorites. The British Museum, whichever one has the Rosetta Stone. I literally spent a weekend in Paris just to go to the Lourve.
Oh, and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. That one’s fun—I went first to the Star Wars exhibit and then to the Star Trek one.
I don’t know if planetariums count as museums, but I’ve been to a couple.
I know my team’s findings from an archaeological dig I went on as a preteen are in a state museum, but I don’t know if they’re on display as I’ve never been to that one.
I love museums, truly. And I didn’t know it was possible to have never visited one because I went as a kid so many times.

BONUS!- October 31st
So, I apparently am not good at counting. Which gave us an extra day to the week on accident! So, we decided to do something a little different for the accidental bonus day.
Twist An Episode Day!
-Basically, it's take any episode of Clone Wars, Bad Batch, anything the clones are in and twist it so the CLONES are the ones coming out on top. Do something to an episode so that it's the soldiers fighting, not the corrupt leadership, who benefit. Preferably something a little out there, a lil spooky, but it can be whatever you want. Use the extra day so that for once, it's the clones winning.

Lucia in the eyes of Connor—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Au Masterlist!!
Connor had never known romantic love until he met Lucia Fantilli
Lucia is so far from the world of hockey, and Connor is just so intrigued and infatuated by everything she does.
He loves her so deeply too. Everything about her soothes his being and makes him feel so seen, in a different way from the media and the world he is normally surrounded by.
His life has always been something to be watched and speculated about, she has never painted him out to be a tabloid or a piece of media to consume
The thing he loves about her most is the person he became when she took his heart into her delicate hands
The way Lucy cares and the way she tenderly loves him completes him in a way his career and life on the ice could never, you can see it in his game and his attitude, he feels more at peace when she's around.
He is perfectly content with his two adorations: hockey and Lucy.
Even in their short time together so far has been the greatest part of his life though, Lucy makes his world rich with life.
She teaches him about reasons to love, shares her feelings for the arts, pushes his limits, and drags him out of the house to show him the culture that lies in the streets of Chicago.
Lucia opens his eyes to the world that surrounds him and makes him indulge in the gifts that life has placed in his lap.
She's just so different from anyone he's ever experienced, like a breath of fresh air, she is just so real and comfortable as herself as a human being
She holds him when he needs to feel human and reminds him that he is only one person, she's aware of the pressure and meets that stressor with tenderness
There is just something so pure about the way their dynamic is constructed, she is like a sculptor and he is her muse, carving him into a man who isn't afraid to feel, a person who questions the world and takes when he feels he deserves more
Lucia teaches Connor of his worth, and that is one of the greatest gifts she has ever placed in his hands.
She's so gentle with him too, she feels his hesitancy through his words and actions and takes everything oh so slowly.
He's thankful that she pushes his limits but also respects his boundaries. Lucy never imposes on the things he deems important and is understanding when he needs to be alone or to learn to handle his emotions on his own, and that recognition that he has it under control helps a lot more than she would ever understand
He's also just in love with her quirks, her kisses, her superstitions, and the small details that compile to make Lucy Lucy.
Loves the freckles that adorn her skin, the marks that dance across her hips, and the way her eyes crease when she smiles with her teeth on display.
There's just so much to love and not enough time in the world for Connor to study
Every day he seems to learn something new about the woman he loves, from the way she takes her coffees, to the way her frown deepens when she sleeps, there is always something he's noticing, details he catches onto and will never let go of.
Connor loves lucia, and there's no doubt about it.

Remembering Jody Williams, 1956-2023
In August, I met with Minneapolis book artist Jody Williams. We gossiped about other artists, talked about tiny things, and she shared stories about her life-long love of books and her chaotic 1960s childhood, growing up near Chicago with five siblings. But the real reason she was visiting was to sell old work from her archive. I've been buying Jody's work for the Hennepin County Library's Book Arts and Fine Press Collection for over a decade, but didn't have any of her early work and wanted to better document her legacy as a book artist. She brought with her nearly all of her books--work spanning over thirty years as a book artist--and it all fit in just one box. Jody's work is tiny.
She had the first editioned artists' book she ever made, her first book housed in a box, her first book under the name Flying Paper Press, her first book printed in her own studio, a book about phobias, an alphabet bestiary jack-in-the-box, books which melded her training in printmaking and metalworking, and her semi-annual periodical devoted to tiny things, among others. What they all had in common was their diminutive size, Jody-designed font, and impeccable precision. We now have 20 of Jody Williams' books in our collection.
Jody died on October 17, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. She will be missed and will be remembered fondly for her contributions to book and printing arts in the Twin Cities.
Jody's books will be on display at Minneapolis Central Library starting in mid-December 2023 through February 2024.

Fossil Novembirb 10: Bayou in the Badlands
Tumblr media
Fluvioviridavis by @quetzalpali-art
Back to Eocene Ecosystems! One of the most famous Eocene fossil sites in the world is the Fossil Lake site of the Green River Formation, an ecosystem from Colorado in the United States. This ecosystem records the transition from the moist forested world of the early Eocene to the drier warm world of the mid-Eocene. The forests would begin to shrink back, the foliage would change, and so would the animals.
Fossil Lake records the start of that process! Sediment would regularly settle into this lake at periodic intervals, which then recorded the evolution of the lifeforms there over thousands of years. The forests were filled with sycamore trees and other broadleaf plants, as well as ferns.
Tumblr media
Limnofregata by @iguanodont
Because the lake was so frequently filled with sediment, oxygen levels were low to nonexistent, preventing decomposers from living at the bottom of the lake. This lead to many different organisms being preserved nearly perfectly, including many gorgeous birds!
In fact, the Field Museum of Chicago - my home - has many of these wonderful fossils on display, and have fascinated me since childhood. So I'm going to break format a little here to showcase some of these fossils.
Tumblr media
Cyrilavis, a Halcyornithid (Parrot-Passerine of Prey)
Tumblr media
Fluvioviridavis, a Strisorian (like oilbirds or frogmouths)
Tumblr media
Eofringillirostrum, a Passerine
Tumblr media
Limnofregata, a Frigatebird in a Gull Niche
Tumblr media
Nahmavis, a relative of shorebirds (Charadriiformes) or rails and cranes (Gruiformes)
Tumblr media
An unnamed Anseriform, probably similar to Anachronornis
Tumblr media
Celericolius, a mousebird
Tumblr media
Zygodactylus, a stem-passerine
We see once again in this ecosystem - as we have in the others we've covered - the common theme of Avian evolution: the niches may stay the same, but the birds filling them will always change. We have Mousebirds perching in trees in North America, we have Frigatebirds filling the Gull niche, ducks wading around the lake like flamingos, and cousins of parrots/passerines hunting prey.
Tumblr media
Presbyornis by @drawingwithdinosaurs
Other notable dinosaurs from this formation include Presbyornis, another one of those Flamingo-Ducks we've talked about like Teviornis and Conflicto; Gastornis because it was literally everywhere from the latest Paleocene through the early Eocene; Lithornithids like Pseudocrypturus because they were also everywhere; early landfowl like Gallinuloides; the cuckoo-roller Plesiocathartes; the ibis Vadaravis; and the turaco relative Foro. Once again, we see many tropical birds in places where they aren't today, due to the extensive warm climate of the Early Eocene.
Tumblr media
Foro by @drawingwithdinosaurs
This swampy ecosystem was filled with large crocodile relatives, small mammals, the earliest known bats, giant lizards, and an alarming number of fish - making it one of the better known ecosystems of the early Paleogene. But the best known Paleogene fossil location is still to come...

From the obvious yearning Italians have historically displayed for the wide open plains and rugged mountains of the American West through art, film, and music as well as seeing how my southern Italian wife has been markedly more happy since moving from New York to Utah, I can only imagine that the reason behind Italians being trapped in places like Chicago, New York, San Fran, and New J*rsey was to prevent them from reaching their true potential upon the open ranges of the west.
