Rambling about Colourisation

So I've just been hit by this thought.

For a very, very long time - right up until the last year, probably - I looked at all the hubbub, still-ongoing (in some quarters), about colourising black-and-white films or television programmes and thought it didn't make any sense - you want your movie to look like all the new ones, right? Just like you'd want the sound remastered, so it sounds great on a modern piece of kit and...

Oh. That's when I started getting it. See, there's this odious modern practice in sound mixing called brick-walling, where one takes any sense of dynamics and tells it to sit in the corner, and every single audio track is subsequently jacked to the maximum. The song is 'flattened', so to speak, and is really freakin' loud and quite uncomfortable to listen to if you've heard anything with real dynamics (go find some Bowie, he's a god in that department).

I thought about how that worked with remasters. So many of them get a bad rap because they get brick-walled - the senseless application of modern standards that ignores the subtleties of an original mix, destroying its function.

And then I looked into things, and the understanding leapt at me. Black-and-white features were shot in black and white. They were designed to be seen in grayscale tones, and everything in production reflected that. The classical Frankenstein's Monster isn't supposed to be green, he was painted up like that so he'd look his palest under studio lighting in film colour, and so on. Colourising features made to work only in the medium they knew is kind of butchery.

On the other hand, if the thing was shot with careful consideration towards colour - as in, being in colour... I don't think that's so bad. That's how restoration should be, right? Restoring it.
