there's a misconception about the realm of cinema; that cinematic politics can be reduced to representation on screen. this is a clever ruse that originates from within film industries, for they are industries, that employ workers, from organised and unorganised sectors. this labour is often overworked and underpaid; a fleeting credit does not put food on the table. but reserving the glory of cinematic production to the actors, writers, and director does serve to distract from the material reality of film production.
(this is NOT about the writers' strike in the united states. i am talking about electricians, carpenters, builders, craftspeople, tailors, stunt-people, grips, light boys, script girls, runners, caterers, cleaners and a plethora of workers that constitute the life-blood of the many, many indian film industries)

Today’s society is no longer Foucault’s disciplinary world of hospitals, madhouses, prisons, barracks, and factories. It has long been replaced by another regime, namely a society of fitness studios, office towers, banks, airports, shopping malls, and genetic laboratories. The society of the 21st century is no longer disciplinary, but a society of the performance. Nor are its inhabitants called ‘subjects of obedience’, but ‘subjects of performance’. These subjects are entrepreneurs of themselves.
Excess work and performance escalate into auto-exploitation. This is much more effective than the exploitation by the others, because it is accompanied by a feeling of freedom. The exploiter is the same exploited. Victim and executioner can no longer differentiate. This self-referentiality generates a paradoxical freedom, which, because of the structures of obligation immanent to it, becomes violence […] In this society of obligation, each one carries with him his forced labor field.
What proves problematic is not individual competition per se, but rather its self-referentiality, which escalates into absolute competition. That is, the achievement-subject competes with itself; it succumbs to the destructive compulsion to outdo itself over and over, to jump over its own shadow. This self-constraint, which poses as freedom, has deadly results..
No-longer-being-able-to-be-able leads to destructive self-reproach and auto-aggression. The achievement-subject finds itself fighting with itself. The depressive has been wounded by internalized war. Depression is the sickness of a society that suffers from excessive positivity. It reflects a humanity waging war on itself.
Today, everyone is an auto-exploiting labourer in his or her own enterprise. People are now master and slave in one. Even class struggle has transformed into an inner struggle against oneself.

man adorno and horkheimer make me want to throw smth but stuart hall?
stuart hall is amazing. he writes simply, effectively. i didn't need to pick up a dictionary(aka my phone) even ONCE when i was doing his reading and i learnt sm. i got to immerse myself in the point he's making w/o being distracted by huge words and i respect him so much for that
academic writing that flows, that's easy to read and understand and yet doesn't dumbify what it's trying to convey can be rare and stuart hall did well at it. <3

Really, Rick and Morty is the ultimate media of our age.
It's entirely and proudly derivative. Nothing original. It's literally whacky copies of Doc Brown and Marty McFly going through what might as well be AI-generated recombination of clichés. Everything relies on the viewer thinking "Ohhh it's like X from Y". It's entirely memes, not just in the funny internet image way but like in the Richard Dawkins selfish gene kinda way. It pretends to be subversive through shock humour, to be topical by bringing up topics without actually doing any meaningful social commentary beyond "Gee Rick, this conflict sure exists". Plus it's made by a guy who loves to put incest into his shows and a guy who it turns out is a bit of a pedo and kinda did domestic battery, which the culture industry specifically had a thing about not doing that anymore. Yet they still do, because these are the reliable people creating mass market shlock entirely because they can put that stuff into it as long as they continue putting out cultural commodities that are profitable

Heidegger's Authentic Being-in-the-world: Dasein & Deception-Awareness, Toward Convivial Futurism
GLOSSARY Dasein: humans interacting with the world, and with each other; indeterminate, but aware Authenticity: the degree of alignment to and coherence with one’s beliefs; not wholly living in the present, past, or future, but looking back to one’s birth, before that to history, ahead to one’s inevitable death, and beyond to humanity’s future. Convivial: freedom realized in personal…

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

we need to destroy the idea that girls should wear makeup. normalize bare faces on prom queens and flower girls and cheerleaders. no products at all instead of '7 product simple makeup routine.' no more 10 step skincare and regular facials and dermablading and gua sha just to be comfortable with yr natural face. i want to see eye bags on the funny librarian and acne on the swim coach and wrinkles on all our adult role models. i want to see a 16 year old girl that has never tried putting on eyeshadow. i want to see a 7 year old girl who doesn't have to go out and buy powder for her dance recital. i want to see trans women and girls everywhere to never have to wear makeup, regardless of how well they 'pass.' no more 'contouring to look masc' either. a post-beauty industry world is possible
reblogs are on but if you bring up the stage makeup point that i have addressed three times yr blocked on sight ☹️

The Rings of Power Proves to be State Capitalism Off the Deep End
Amazon’s foray into medieval fantasy epics – The Rings of Power, a Tolkien adaptation – is perhaps the most expensive TV product ever made, but is only possible due to the largesse of government subsidies.  As recently-leaked viewing data shows, the series is a flaccid flop that doesn’t even appear to have chimed with the core, established Tolkienverse audience.  Season two has moved to the UK,…

wow i love twitter sm.
on a serious note - i think it's funny to portray women not wearing make-up as silly and childish when you're the one apparently caring so much about what other people are doing to their faces.
ask yourself: why do you find bare faces not appropriate for formal events? why does it bother you to see a woman without makeup? how does it effect you? why do you think it effects you?
you're so insistent that there are no societal pressures at play, that women are doing this exclusively for themselves and for the joy of it - then where does this urge to force it on women who don't find joy in it come from? why does it annoy you to see women in their natural way of being? it's a choice, but also there's a right choice, apparently, and anyone stepping out of line shoud be promptly shamed into submission. right?
"a little (whatever) never hurt anybody" okay and neither does a bare face. grow up.

Andrea Dworkin's classic Beauty Hurts diagram from Woman Hating (1974), updated for modern procedures, fifty years later.
A first step in the process of liberation (women from their oppression, men from the unfreedom of their fetishism) is the radical redefining of the relationship between women and their bodies. The body must be freed, liberated, quite literally: from paint and girdles and all varieties of crap. Women must stop mutilating their bodies and start living in them. Perhaps the notion of beauty which will then organically emerge will be truly democratic and demonstrate a respect for human life in its infinite, and most honorable, variety. —Andrea Dworkin, Woman Hating (1974)

wow almost seems like this whole romanticization of "girlhood" thing kind of revolves entirely around consumerisim. "little treats". 10 step skincare regimens. "girl math" as an excuse to be financially illiterate. be a good girl, don't think, just spend inordinate amts of money to conform to the latest tiktok microtrend bc that's all it means to be a girl <3
