wow almost seems like this whole romanticization of "girlhood" thing kind of revolves entirely around consumerisim. "little treats". 10 step skincare regimens. "girl math" as an excuse to be financially illiterate. be a good girl, don't think, just spend inordinate amts of money to conform to the latest tiktok microtrend bc that's all it means to be a girl <3

video diary entry ideas⋆.ೃ࿔*:・🍭
Tumblr media
so if u dont already know, a video diary is exactly what it sounds like. a diary of videos that u make, in my previous post about video diaries i talked ab why its sm fun and in this post i'll be giving video ideas just in case u need an extra push or ideas ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THRIFT HAUL ;
talk about ur personal style and ideas and what ur plans are for those clothes. maybe turn the clothes that u thrifted into a project and personalize the clothes to ur needs and style. talk about how you'd style the clothes. as a person who has a passion for fashion i love a good thrift haul video entry.
BAKING AND CHATTING ;
pick up a box of cake mix and make ur favorite sweet treat while just chatting to the camera. this is helpful especially if u find sitting and talking about ur thoughts and expressing urself kind of awkward, it gives u something to do and helps to lessen the anxiety if ur just starting.
LETS TALK ABOUT IT ;
my video diary is like my own podcast so here's some things that i've talked about.
my "hot takes"
ideas for my future
things that frustrate me
talk about ur day in a different language (this is also great practice if ur learning a new language)
talk about whats going on in a show/series that ur watching or reading
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and just sitting and talking is a rly great way for me to cultivate creativity, think of new ideas for literally everything. from my blog to law of assumption epiphanies to projects, fashion ideas and projects, my music EVERYTHING.
talk about things that u need to get off of ur chest for ur own peace yk? cuz theres just something about saying it out loud
do a mukbang
DO A COLLECTION TOUR ;
i've actually written a post about starting a collection, but if u need an idea for a video entry go through ur collection and talk about pieces in ur collection.
DO A MUKBANG ;
order and eat ur favorite foods, or if u want to you can take an asmr kind of approach so that then u can enjoy your food and the sounds r SO GOOD in my opinion. when u do a mukbang or asmr u can try new foods and give feedback which gives u something to talk about. some things i've mukbanged recently are
mexican tacos and rice water and for dessert i had cheese cake tempura with some mochi
it was actually my first time trying rice water and it was SO GOOD. it was so delicious and refreshing and the tacos were amazing too. the cheese cake tempura was a bit small but it was rly good and the mochi as always was delicious.

"Portrayal doesn't equal romanticization" is good and important but it is important to remember there is also "Romanticization doesn't equal condoning in real life".
Case in point: NBC's Hannibal (and its fandom) heavily romanticizes a whole host of stuff including abuse, medical malpractice, murder, and non-consensual cannibalism. Do you think the show (or any of its fans, for that matter) are going around saying these things are perfectly acceptable in real life?? Of course not!
Just because people think something can be seen as poetic and beautiful in fiction doesn't mean they wouldn't be disgusted by it irl. Because when people get hurt in fiction no one's actually gotten hurt. Ceci n'est pas une pipe and all that

this is a controversial take, but ngl, even hearing someone talk about disorders being romanticized feels like an ableist dogwhistle these days
there are indeed instances where people actually do such things, like with proana/mia, or the mentally ill goth gf memes where they literally fetishize them for it.
but many of the things people complain about as romanticization is things like traumacore or even mentally ill people doing literally anything that isn’t just self pity for having a disorder or seeing it as entirely negative, such as lipsincing, especially to a cool song.

(Long rambly post so feel free to scroll) I wanna get some opinions on this so comment or reblog or whatever if you have any thoughts. Where do you draw the line between depicting things like abuse, EDs, drug use, etc. and romanticizing them? I write about a lot of pretty tough topics and I like to think that I do them justice and write them honestly and truthfully, including the bad parts that are often glossed over, but I do always worry that the wrong person will find my work and will start to idolize or romanticize what I've written.
I often think of movies like To The Bone or songs like Ultraviolence, which have been criticized for romanticizing EDs and abuse, respectively. And, as someone who consumes a lot of media related to those kinds of things and has also had the lived experience of actually living through them irl, I kind of agree, but I also kind of disagree. Like, when my ED was worse than it is now, I remember reading everything about anorexia I could get my hands on. I remember watching every movie and reading every blog and 90% of it wasn't "romanticized." Most of it was about your hair falling out and your skin going grey and not being able to shit, but I still idealized it. But now, in a better headspace, I can read/watch the same stuff and not see the beauty or allure of it.
Long winded way of saying that determining if something is romanticized is often dependent on the viewer/consumer. I honestly cannot think of a single way that EDs could be depicted that wouldn't have been romanticized by 2021 me. So do we never depict EDs in media? How do we toe that line?
But then on the other hand, there are certain things that I believe are rather blatant in their romanticization of things like drug use, abuse, etc. (Think Colleen Hoover and how she writes DV) and honestly have no redeeming educational merit, nor do they actually bring awareness to difficult issues. I think back to music I listened to that was like "oh I'm so thin and delicate I love starving lalala beauty is pain and suffering" like yeah duh that was bad for my brain, and it definitely fueled my ED.
Anyway. Been having lots of thoughts. This was worded poorly because I'm not feeling well atm but I'm curious where other people draw the line.

is taylor really glorifying mental illness, or is media literacy declining faster than we can stop it?
is taylor really romanticizing mental illness, or did we as a society get caught up in the era of romanticing our lives through art and escapism?

ways im romanticizing school⋆.ೃ࿔*:・🎀
Tumblr media
this post is just for funsies ✨ and im writing it for reference and as a reminder to romanticize school cuz its so much fun. if it matters im a sophomore
chewing bubble gum in my classes (i've mastered chewing my gum without getting caught)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
touch ups during classes (im always sitting in my classes reapplying glosses, quickly brushing my hair or spritzing on some perfume. usually i do this before class starts or towards the end)
PINK EVERYTHING (atp im the barbie of my classes and everyone knows how much i love pink cuz i make it super obvious. i use pink school supplies, use pink glitter pens and pink pencils, im looking to purchase a new school bag and best believe it'll be pink)
yes, school IS a fashion show (my school is a private school so we have uniforms, but i like adding accessories to let some individuality sparkle. i add things like cute socks, leg warmers, hair clips, cute claw clips, headbands, jewelry, etc)
academic validation (im quite chatty during school, but regardless of how much i talk and frolic my grades r beautiful. i pride myself on my grades)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FRIENDS (after school, me and my friends will have study sessions in the library sometimes, or we'll go to the cafe and buy cute drinks and snacks. sometimes, we go shopping after school, we make video diary entires together, and going to school with my friends just makes the high school experience 10x more enjoyable)
giving everyone compliments and smiling at ppl (im a pretty social person, so giving compliments feels easy, and i love to make friends and make ppl feel comfortable)
kpop (i watch txt fancams and to-do episodes during classes if were not doing anything or if we're having a study hall, right now im obsessed w taehyuns tinnitus fancam)

i want to live in simpler times. i wish i were in a small town, the kind where everyone knows everyone. i can envision running through the fields with cherished friends, the ribbons in my hair flowing freely. i'd have to be a proper lady in my puffed sleeve dress, although my spontaneous escapades would say otherwise. imagine adventuring on a horse! and the vests, parasols, suspenders, cuff links--how could i not mention corsets? overall, i wish i lived in a place similar to Avonlea, with my home being like Green Gables. every day you breathe a breath of fresh air and explore something new. now, wouldn't that be wonderful?
if only my life were a period piece.

To summarize this awesome post by @papenathys as a fellow South Asian girl: "I do not dream of labour" is not for us, was not designed with us in mind, and it will never be for the majority of us. We will literally be left to starve and die if do not labour or fend for ourselves. We have no alternative to labour.
The typical romanticization of the world and life, the way Tumblr and Pinterest and Instagram portrays it to us, is inherently Eurocentric. It is not available to us, and we need to all stop expecting a harsh, colonialist world to eventually accommodate us. It won't.
