Something I do really enjoy about Our Flag Means Death is that the central romance actually...makes sense? So many rom-coms fall into the tropes and plot beats without considering what makes them work. The leads fall in love because that's what leads do in romantic comedies, not because of anything intrinsic to their characterizations, external or internal, or the chemistry of the performers.
Tumblr media
With Our Flag Means Death, you can see the progression of the love story. You see who Stede is at the start, his emotional and psychological makeup and how he's already beginning to change by the time Ed shows up on his ship. That character arc is already begun before they become friends. Then we get the bits and pieces of Ed's background and relationship to his own legend, and the desires he has that exist independent of Stede but that Stede's presence helps him to express. We see them playing together and laughing and having fun, and the relief in both of them to have someone who truly gets them. And we see that friendship morphing into romantic love, and how that love is complicated because of who they both are and the worlds in which they live.
When they get to the first beach kiss, it's a payoff of everything that has developed over the previous episodes. It makes sense of all the moments and scenes, and not just the big ones - the times that Ed puts his arm around Stede's shoulders or pats his back, the conversation about marmalade, how Ed takes his tea, the conversation about spoons and passive-aggression.
Tumblr media
I love that the divide between them is never about them personally overcoming class or race prejudices—though those things are not insignificant to the story or the characters. Where those things come into play, it's the big villains grabbing them and trying to pull them apart because "he's from my world, not yours." And that outer conflict fuels their inner ones, and also gives them both something to push back against that is not each other.
The whole relationship works because the relationship arc is intertwined with their individual character arcs. Stede has to deal with his guilt and sense of inadequacy. Ed has to face his self-hatred. They both have to break away from the people and systems that are trapping them. They have to change in order to love each other better. And how they change makes sense to who they are, together and apart. None of it is forced.
It's just a really good show.

The Mario movie thing is so funny to me. Here, look at this:
Sonic movies (1, 2, & w/ 3 on the way) come out, does INCREDIBLE in box office, decimates Marvel films, who previously had a stranglehold
Nintendo sees this, wants a piece of that pie, buckles down to make a Mario movie Incorrect order of events, as pointed out here! Mario movie announced before the public knew about Sonic movie.
(Potentially because the previous Mario movie was so out there, did poorly, & was disliked by fans & then promptly forgotten,) they pair with Illumination, a studio that is largely known for making very sterile films
Btw, is it just me that finds it weird that there is no mention from Nintendo or online of the previous movie, in all this? Maybe I'm the only one who remembers this film idk
They announce casting. Everyone immediately boos because they cast Chris Pratt as Mario.
Immediate outrage, as Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario for DECADES, was not cast in his claim to fame roll
There is a (unsourced) rumor that a test screening for the film was met with disappointment, making Nintendo unhappy
Slightly corroborating this, Nintendo buys Dynamo Pictures, to make Nintendo Pictures, with the intent to make future movies in-house
Anticipation for the movie likens it to other sterile animated movies of the last 10 years, like the Minions movies
Trailer comes out.
People continue to boo Chris Pratt, a bad cast for a beloved character who is putting 0 effort into his voice, in comparison to all other VAs putting in 110%
Chris Pratt goes to bed "depressed," at seeing the response I was incorrect, that is an older article, about when he was thanking his wife for providing a healthy child, to which people drew immediate parallels to his ex-wife's son, who has many health complications & needed many surgeries.
But with your help, we can make him being depressed after media backlash reality!
Lol, &, may I say, lmao.

There's a lot of validity in the idea that older Bakugo is a traumatized pro-hero with major PTSD... but you know what's kinda fucked up to think about? The fact that Bakugo is also a 22-year-old pro-hero with major PTSD even before that, too.
It's almost easy to imagine that things are actually better when he's older (the therapy finally a routine, the trauma long set and on the path to being healed)... and that it's his whole 20s that are spent as a pool of disaster trying to recover from the war(s).
He looks back and barely even remembers being twenty, much less twenty-five or twenty-seven. Barely remembers how little he slept, not at the hands of trying to balance hero work and getting a degree at the same time, but just out of the pure insomnia that came from trying to move on and every nightmare attached.
Hardly ever showering, never shaving (not that he ever grew much of a beard, but the facial hair was definitely there. There's pictures of him on the news with an awkward, grown out haircut and patches on facial hair that make him look positively... immature), barely even eating more than a few protein bars or an energy jelly drink-a day. It's a blur, and his friends are hardly there to pick him up out of it because they're all going through it, too. Somewhat.
It's definitely weird if you meet him during this period. He's not all there, at least, not all of the time. He doesn't really register your interactions, the friendship you extend to him (a younger, or ever older, version of him would've shown you that deep seeded ferocity in response, tried to bite the hand that fed him, even if it were love... but 20s Bakugo... doesn't seem to notice). Even though only one of his eyes is clouded over, the good one never seems to brighten up.
There's definitely moments when the old him shines through: when he's with Deku, when he's in the midst of battle, when he finds out that Todoroki still does a shitty job at chopping scallions. But it's a long time before he's even close to the same, able to step out from underneath the fog of simply surviving and into the sunshine of recovering.
But I think sticking through it with him is worth it.
(It's a weird moment, a happy moment, the first time you realize that Bakugo has changed. That the pouring rain outside hasn't bothered him since he showed up at your apartment. He forgot his umbrella, he's been quite careless ever since the war—wet and shaggy hair frizzed up, cheeks red from cold—but he doesn't seem to mind, with his bare feet up on your coffee table, his eyes gazing out the window. You hand his tea, and instead of gulping it down in one go, letting it burn in his throat, he winces at the heat.
"Tastes like shit," he says, and you laugh because it always does. Just this time, he noticed.)

Ok everyone listen up
So the One Show did an interview with Chris Pratt and Charlie Day about the Mario Movie, and during this they showed a new clip.
It's shown when the actors and presenters are talking, so you can just barely hear any audio.
Nevertheless, I will not be posting the video with the audio here, but I will be posting gifs and talking about some highlights of this new scene. You can view the clip here (skip to 2.53)
But be warned: if you do not wish to see any new footage until the movie comes out, then skip the video and this post. I will be posting gifs and tagging spoilers so don't go any further if you don't want to be spoilt ⚠️

In this first bit Mario has come into the warp pipe and is floating in the abyss, and then notices Luigi falling ahead
Tumblr media
"LUIGI!"
Tumblr media
I slowed the speed down for this bit, but basically Mario and Luigi are spinning out of control through the vortex.
"It's gonna be ok!"
"How is this gonna be ok?!"
There's other dialogue here but it's so incomprehensible, I can't make out what else they are saying.
Tumblr media
"It's gonna be ok as long as we're together!"
I can see some of Illumination's style coming through here! Mario's looking a bit stretchy 🤭
Mario just trying to be positive and calm Luigi down 💖 Oh my heart 😭❤💚 Mario will do anything to make sure Luigi feels safe no matter what.
And then...Luigi does this....
Tumblr media
NO! No movie you can't do this to me!!! 😭
That look on Luigi's face tells you everything. He trusts Mario's words above anyone else's ❤💚
And dang this will end up being more heavy if it turns out they're orphans and all they have is each other since birth 💖

Filling an entire page with some babbies, mostly featuring the Babbie #1 and some of her friends. And hey, I wanna un-censor Babbie #3 as much as the next person, but we’re just gonna have to wait.
“Until when?” Yeah.

“The Cuphead Show isn’t that funny, these jokes are boring.”
....You’re gonna tell me Demon Kettle wasn’t funny?? Or when Mugman accidentally killed Ludwig (Actually I think he’s still kind of alive)? Or Devil coming out wearing a towel around him when he’s already covered in fur or accidentally killing his demons? Dice flirting with himself in the mirror or running through the gates of hell with dramatic music playing while wearing his suit?? Stickler??
I feel so sad for you.

Can someone please explain to me how Disney’s Descendants had Hades (before he was revealed to be Mal’s father) going from looking like this in the cartoon shorts:
Tumblr media
Extremely accurate to his original design. No fire hair since I guess he’s supposed to look more “normal and human-like” but at least the hair style suits him. Looks like a slicked back, sleazy business man hairdo lol.
To frickin this?:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks NOTHING like his original design (not even with the hair) and hardly acts like the original Hades (he acts and dresses like a washed up rock star rather than a sleazy, bitter used car salesman, I could tell they tried to make up for it with him being all sarcastic and sassy, but it didn’t have the same effect the original Hades had).
So bizarre to me lmao. I mean, I know the original Hades is hard to replicate since his facial structure borderlines inhuman, but c’mon. I’ve seen the live actors at Disneyworld and Disneyland and I’ve seen cosplayers that do a better Hades than this. I know this is basically a big ol “modern fairytale au” of the Disney universe so everyone looks fairly human, but I mean, if you can’t look like Hades then at least ACT like Hades, y’know?
But then again, I’m not surprised because a lot of the original villains in the Descendants series were ooc. Like Cruella was no longer this snobbish woman who loves all things fashion. She was basically insane. Talking to a fake dog plushie and acting crazy while also having a huge fear/hatred of dogs. Maleficent was no longer the mistress of all evil, very regal and refined, and scared you out of your wits with one look from her. She was turned into this silly, quirky Broadway singing villainess that was obsessed with power. So…yeah, as I said, doesn’t surprise me that Hades’ personality changed in the movie series. But still as a Hades simp, I would’ve really liked to see Hades portrayed accurately.

I haven't re-watched BBC's Merlin in like, 6 years, but every couple of months, like clockwork, I think about the scene where that one evil ghost wizard taunts Merlin for choosing to remain Arthur's servant even when he has the opportunity to take over Camelot for himself. And Merlin, without hesitating, shoots back with "Better to serve a good man than rule side by side with an evil one!" And then I always have a small crisis because I don't think I could ever write anything that comes even close to being so iconic and powerful.
