He smoothly slides next to Steph, acting nonchalant in a way she knows he's forcing himself to appear.
"So," the guy starts and steph hope of not being hit on at the gala burns away.
"You single?"
She sighs, groaning inside, imagine herself whacking the cute guy.
"Not interested." At her dismissal, he blinks owlishly. In that moment, Cass swings by, taking her side.
"Oh!" The boy chokes. "Ancients no– not for me," he coughes, and steph doesn't know if she should be offended.
"I'm asking for her." He points across the ballroom, and steph meets the coolest looking gal (beside her and cass) and sees her flush, hiding behind her glass.
Oh she's adorable.
"I'm danny by the way," the guy— Danny introduces, "that over there is Sam, Samantha Delphinium Manson, call her Sam tho."
He grins when she turns to look at him, interest peaked.
"Saw her looking at you and knew i had to wingman," At his words, she gives a matching grin.
"Stephanie Brown, I go by steph." They shake hands. It somehow feels like they'd just agreed to some shady business.
"Mind giving me pointers before I woo your bestie?"
"Ask about plants and animals. You will quickly learn of her passionate work."
Tugging at her arm, Cass leans to her, wishing her a quick good luck.
They hold a silent conversation with Danny looking at his shoes, as much as steph would love to woo someone, she wouldn't leave without making sure cass would be okay.
Cass only shoo's her away, and Steph takes that and does.
Time to let her charm go wild.

Dc x DP Prompt #8: Best Friend’s Brother
Preface: this prompt can be used with different characters but I’m writing it as Dead on Main bc that’s my favorite. Also the colleges I mention are real colleges from the DCU
~~~
Danny Fenton was 18 when he moved to Gotham for college.
It was the only place with a half decent engineering program that would take a kid with his record; drop in grades, unexplained absences, missing class, a disciplinary record, etc. Plus there was a decent saturation of both magic and ectoplasm in Gotham’s air. After he got accepted he decided to tell his parents he was Phantom. They reacted surprisingly well all things considered. They were horrified to learn they’d been hunting their son but it quickly turned into acceptance to listen to what he had to tell them. Now they turned their obsession from hunting ghosts to learning more about ghost more humanely. He also managed to get his former rouges to agree to call off any major shenanigans in favor of less destructive outlets. (He got Ember a TikTok and a YouTube channel, he set up a drag racing circuit in the realms for Johnny and Kitty, let Technus enter the internet as long as he stayed within Amity’s grid or help Ember manage her stuff, allowed Desiree grant wishes for Make a Wish Foundation kids so long as she didn’t horribly twist them, etc.)
Now with the town not at constant risk of danger and his parents agreeing to really handle any rouge ghosts, Danny could leave Amity with a clear conscience. His friends were also growing up and heading to their own colleges. Tucker was heading to Ivy University in New England, which rivaled MIT in terms technological prestige, and Sam decided on Vandermeer University in Pittsburg, which had a reputation for being a very liberal, anti-authority campus. Although their trio would be spread out, Danny found comfort in the fact that they’d all moved from the Midwest to the Northeast.
With promises to stay in touch a visit. Danny got set up in GCU’s dorms, ready to move into the next chapter of his life.
~
Danny Fenton was 20 when Tim Drake (age 19 but nearing 20) officially became one of his best friends.
They had been introduced to each other by their mutual friend Sebastian Ives for a new Warlocks and Warriors campaign. Their friendship extended beyond WnW when they ended up on the same Applied Physics and Mechanics class. It was cemented when they got pair up for a project in class and had to spend lots of time around each other.
Danny didn’t mind that Tim tended to be a bit flaky and Tim didn’t mind that Danny was possibly not 100% human. They didn’t ask each other too many questions about that stuff. They knew the other had something odd about him and that was fine with them. It was nice to have a causal friend they could be normal with, without being questioned about their more peculiar behaviors.
They officially became best friends when the built a Rube Goldberg machine with a working trebuchet within an hour of the three they had to complete it for their Applied Phys-Mech final. Danny introduced Tim to Sam, Tucker and Jazz. Tim introduced him to Steph, Tam, and Cass. They texted and hung out fairly often. They truly did consider each other one their best friends.
~
Danny Fenton is 22 when he meets Tim’s family.
Tim’s 21st birthday is coming up and he has plans with his family the day of and is going out with his friends, including a couple from out of town, that night. They want to take him out for his first drink and it’s fortunate timing since it’s the weekend so nobody has to worry about classes. Everyone who was going was already informed that Tim would be spending most of the day with his family before Steph and Cass would bring to the club everyone was meeting up at. Which is why it’s purely a coincidence when he runs into them at BatBurger during the lunch rush.
Danny had just picked up the part-time job to earn a little extra cash to pay for his hobbies. Tim new about it but didn’t know the exact location he worked. That’s why they were both presently surprised when they heard each others voices in the drive through. When they pulled up to window Danny saw his friend leaning over a tired looking black-haired man, trying to stick his head out of the drivers window to give Danny a maniacal grin.
He quickly introduced the other passengers of the car as his dad, Bruce, and three of his brothers Dick, Jason, and Duke. He mentioned he had a fourth brother, Damian, who was still at home. Danny couldn’t really see everyone all that well on account of they were inside a car but he happily greeted them as well. They laughed and Danny wished Tim a happy birthday saying he’d see him at his celebration later tonight before handing them their food. He could the rowdy boys ribbing their brother as the car drove away and Danny resumed his work.
That incident seemed to have opened a gate because now Tim felt more comfortable inviting him over when his brothers were still around the house. He occasionally talked about his family more and Danny returned the favor letting snippets of his own family spill a little more. Occasionally, he’d see Tim’s family outside of his interactions with Tim.
He’d run into Damian, and sometimes Bruce or Dick was with him, at the museum or in the park while the younger had been walking his dog and stopped to say hi a couple of times. He chatted with Dick a couple of times when they were both in line to get coffee at a cafe. He saw Duke on a college tour once and waved at him.
The family member he probably saw the most other that Tim (and by extension Cass) was actually Jason. He’d ended up ditching BatBurger to get some more practical experience at an apprenticeship at the auto shop Jason went to to get his motorcycle serviced. The two of them got along pretty well and would often make conversation when Jason was waiting on his bike to be ready or to get his bill.
At first is was small talk about little things like how he and Tim were doing in class or how their days were going but they soon grew to have genuine interests in each other. Jason let Danny talk about space and mechanics and even gave his own thoughts sometimes, once helping Danny realize he was over complicating the circuit board of the device he was building. In return Danny let Jason ramble to him about literature, even taking the initiative to read a book Jason mentioned so he could talk to him about it better. Their conversation tended to be on the briefer side but were always enjoyable to both parties.
Danny actually liked being around Jason a lot but didn’t really bring that fact up a lot around Tim as it didn’t seem necessary. Tim was pretty glad that Danny got along with his family but he preferred to keep them in separate places in his mind. Danny knew and respected that, only really mentioning that he’d seen them recently and that they’d told him to say hi on their behalf (or die in Damian’s case occasionally).
~
Tim Drake was 22 when he came to a horrific realization.
Well, perhaps horrific was a bit of an exaggeration. Tim wasn’t necessarily horrified by the revelation. In all honesty he didn’t know how to feel. He felt an odd mixture of protectiveness, possessiveness, confusion, and optimism(?).
You see, Tim and Danny had been hanging out in the campus center, studying and goofing off when he got a text from Jason saying he was coming to pick him up for family dinner at the manor since he was closest and Dick was busy picking up Duke and Damian from their after school clubs.
“What’s up?” Danny asked him curiously.
Tim set his phone on the table and started putting his stuff away. “My brother is coming to pick me up for family dinner so I gotta head out soon.”
“Ah well I should probably get going too. Tell Dick I said hi.”
“Actually, it’s Jason. Dick is picking up Duke and Damian,” he said shoving his textbook into his bag.
“Oh? That’s nice of him. Hey do you wanna just head out together?” Danny asked, fidgeting with his hoodie strings.
Tim noticed a slight strain in Danny’s voice at the mention of Jason but didn’t comment. He just nodded his head sure and walked outside with Danny. They got out to the street when Tim realized he’d left his phone in the library. He faced palmed and asked Danny if he could hold his stuff so it wouldn’t slow him down as he ran back to the campus center to get his phone. Danny agreed to and hold his stuff and wait for Jason while Tim went back.
After getting his phone Tim started heading back to where he left Danny when he saw that Jason had arrived that Jason had arrived and was talking to Danny. He was about to call out to them when he noticed several things in quick succession. Danny was fidgeting with his hoodie, something he tended to do when nervous. The tips of Danny’s ears were a light shade of pink (it isn’t cold out yet?). Danny looked deeply absorbed in his conversation with Jason in a way that reminded Tim of how he talked about space. And Jason seemed just as absorbed in the conversation as well.
The gears in Tim’s head went into overdrive and he realized ‘Ah- Danny has a crush on Jason’. His eyes widened as his head whipped around to examine Jason again. He saw a look of genuine fondness in his eyes. Thus Tim was confronted with the aforementioned horrific realization and complicated feelings. Tim didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or both.
‘My dumbass best friend has a crush on my brother. And worse(?), my idiot brother returns those feelings.’
Red Robin on patrol as usual when he heard something move behind him. He whirled around with his bo staff extended expecting a fight. Instead he was faced with a green puppy. He would have thought it was Beast Boy if not for the fact the dog was glowing.
The vigilante eased down to the puppy, making sure he didn't give off any threatening vibes before petting the dog. He checked the collar and discovered the puppies name was Cujo and under the name it read, "Warning: He had EARNED that name"
Tim wondered what that meant. In any event the dog was clearly a meta and Tim discovered it could walk through solid objects. Density shifting perhaps? Finding himself unable to shake the dog it managed to follow him back to the batcave where he was teased for picking up a stray, cause appearently that was Damians thing. Don't get him wrong, Damian did try to sway the dog but it stayed glued to Tim's side.
It was only a few days later that they realized the dog tended to fixate on Tim's left side. More specifically, the location of Tim's soulmate mark.
Danny/Bruce prompt for you!
Older!Danny who has taken over Dalv Co and has renamed it Fenton Works out of spite. Danny is a successful business person but has very different methods compared to Vlad.
He is in Gotham attending the opening of the Gotham observatory (space obsession?) and general tourism.
Danny being the suspicious being he is quickly attracts the attention of one 'Brucie' Wayne during his stay in the city. (v sus person Danny is, even without the ghost stuff).
The bats, being from Gotham aren't used to not shady business people (Tim did build a Batmobile w/ the batarang budget). So, batman inc. do some casual espionage, looking into him (being protective) but it. just. isn't. working! They tried everything! (cause Danny's not guilty there's no dirt) But finding nothing is more suspicious than finding something.
In terms of in person interactions Danny (older than Bruce) and "Brucie" keep "accidentally" bumping into each other Rom-com style. Clark is doing his best to wingman via cheesy gossip columns.
P,s. Here is a chewed, headless lizard skeleton. :)
:0 'Daniel' Fenton and 'Brucie' Wayne?! a pairing I never thought of in that sense but my GOD do I want to see it now. Clark helping by crating cheesy press is such a good addition holy cow.
Love triangle-ish au because the Idea is holding my motivation hostage until it gets written as a prompt.
So there's a transfer student program going on both Danny and Sam are brought into Gotham Sam is ready for this. The atmosphere, the crime, the vigilantes she's prepared she's thriving!
What she didn't prepare for or expect was the stabby, Wayne kid trying to flirt with Danny!
Immediately she's up and arms because that's her dumbass thank you very much. Damian and Sam find themselves in a rival-like relationship trying to prove that they'd be the best potential partner for Danny. Everyone can see what's going on everyone can see they're both in love with Danny and fighting over it but somehow??
Danny doesn't see it?! He's just like "I'm so glad my two friends are getting along so well," all while Damian and Sam are threatening to kill eachother in the background.
At some point while fighting they realize that they genuinely enjoy each other's company and respect eachother as people. They just can't see eachother in a romantic/sexual way.
Why should one of them have to be heartbroken or become resentful when Danny has two hands and they're on the fast track to becoming best friends.
Onlookers are very confused when Damian and Sam go from public attempted murder to wingmaning for eachother??
"Guys, quick break," Oscar announced, stepping aside and setting down his paddle.
"In the next set, we play together, we'll show them how it's done properly. In a Aussie style," Daniel said, grabbing some water and taking a few sips, to which Oscar chuckled, wiping his hair with a towel. It was a pleasant, warm evening. Oscar, Daniel, and a few friends decided to take advantage of the last free day before the frenzy of the home Grand Prix and relax in the company of friends. But Oscar's thoughts were far from relaxed. When he picked up his phone and saw a few missed calls from Y/N, his friend, his smile instantly faded, not escaping Daniel's notice.
"Something wrong?" he asked, glancing at him attentively. Piastri, still focused on his phone, just shook his head.
"I have no idea, but I hope not," he replied, quickly typing a message to his friend.
"Sorry for not answering. Is everything okay? Should I call back?"
He didn't have to wait long for a reply, as it came seconds later.
"No, nothing happened. I just wanted to talk for a moment."
Seeing him nervously tapping on the keyboard, Daniel approached him and glanced over his shoulder.
"Translating to our language, something definitely happened. She just decided not to bother you," he said, scanning through their recent messages from a while ago. "Girlfriend?"
"No, a friend. A close friend."
"Then you should call her back even more so," he remarked, looking meaningfully into Oscar's eyes as he raised his head to meet his gaze. Oscar returned his gaze to the phone in his hand and after a moment's hesitation nodded.
"I'll be right back; start without me if you need to," he informed, then quickly clicked the camera. As he left the court and stepped outside, the girl picked up. She was hastily wiping her cheeks, but it was futile, as Oscar easily noticed her distressed state. It was evident she had been crying.
"Hey, what happened? Why are you crying?" he asked, concerned, gazing attentively at his friend. After his question, she just shook her head and buried her face in her hands. A sob escaped from his phone.
"Y/N, please tell me why you're in such a state," he calmly requested, though his heart was pounding like crazy. He had no idea what had caused his friend to be in such a state, and the fact that he was on the other side of the globe and couldn't just come over to check on her only amplified his worry.
"Mattias," she managed to squeeze out just one word, but it was enough for Oscar to know what had brought her to tears.
"What happened? Where are you?"
It was clear that the girl was outside. It was dark, and she was walking briskly, her face illuminated only by the glow of her phone held in her hand. Her hair were messy and her mascara was smudged on her cheeks.
"I'm waiting for an Uber. I'm coming back from Natalie's birthday party, the one I told you I didn't want to go to."
"You ended up going?"
"Yes, and it was a mistake," she replied, sniffing. "Mattias was there too. I didn't even know he got an invitation. Turns out he did, and on top of that, he was having such a great time he forgot he had a girlfriend."
Oscar didn't even realize when he started nervously pacing, waiting for his friend to continue.
"I went there," Y/N continued, her voice trembling "after all, it would be stupid if I ignored my friend on her birthday. Then suddenly someone comes up to me and asks if I'm Mattias' girlfriend, and I answer yes. And he says I guess not, since on the balcony he's been kissing someone else. And he was actually making out with some girl! When he saw me, he looked as if he had seen a ghost. It didn't occur to him that I might be at my friend's fucking birthday party!"
"Did he react in any way?"
"Of course," the girl snorted, "baby, it's not what you think, we were just talking, I didn't have my hand in her panties at all! Fuck, of course not!"
"Hey, calm down," Oscar said, knowing his friend's emotions well. "How long until your Uber arrives?"
Y/N calmed down for a moment and glanced at her phone, swiping through her notifications.
"3 minutes."
"Alright, the most important thing is for you to get out of there and be home soon. Don't hang up until you're inside, okay?"
"Why me, Oscar? What's wrong with me?" she asked, looking back at her phone. Despite the thousands of kilometers between them, as Oscar looked at the screen of his phone and saw his friend's sad eyes, he felt as if she were standing right in front of him. The downside was that he couldn't hug her and provide the physical support she needed right now.
"It's not your fault, Y/N. It's not your fault at all."
Despite his words of support, Oscar knew that his reassurances were just empty words. He talked to his friend until she got home and let him know she was safe. He offered to continue talking until he noticed her condition had slightly improved, but it was clear she was exhausted.
"I think it's best if I go to bed," she said softly. He heard the sound of keys turning in the lock and the rustle of things being put away. "Although I doubt I'll be able to sleep."
"You should rest," Piastri agreed, nodding. "Text me as soon as you wake up, okay?"
"Sure, but then you'll be sleeping, it's 9 hours' difference," she replied, returning her gaze to the screen of her phone. "Besides, you have more important things to deal with tomorrow."
"Nothing is more important than you," he said, but she just scoffed and shook her head. "Nothing, you hear me? I'll keep the sound on while I sleep, call if anything happens in the meantime. Okay?"
Y/N sighed and nodded.
"Thank you, Osc. It's good to have you here."
Piastri smiled warmly at her.
"Of course I am."
When the call ended, Oscar sighed deeply and rubbed his face with his hand. When he returned to the court, the match was already underway. So, he sat on the bench and clenched his phone in his hand, trying to gather his thoughts somehow. His heart ached at the thought of his friend and what she had gone through. He had known Y/N since their school days when they shared a desk. A friendship had easily developed between them, and they had become practically inseparable. Despite Oscar's busy lifestyle and constant travels, they had managed to maintain constant contact, meeting as often as possible. In such situations, however, their friendship, separated by kilometers, could not cope.
"It's everything alright?" Daniel interrupted Oscar's thoughts, approaching him after the set ended.
"Long story," Piastri sighed.
"I'll gladly listen, considering I'm out and Blake is subbing for me in this set," he replied, sitting next to him and wiping his face with a towel.
For some reason, Oscar began to tell him about what he had just learned over the phone. He and Daniel weren't exceptionally close, sure, they were buddies on the paddock, sometimes playing padel together, but Oscar had never thought of confiding in him about anything. But perhaps this situation overwhelmed him a bit, and he needed advice on how he could help his friend.
"How long have you known her?" Ricciardo asked, when a moment of silence fell between them.
"Over six years, we met back in school."
"For your age, that's almost a quarter of your life," he joked, but after a moment, he looked at him with a slightly more serious expression. "Do you like her?"
"She's my friend, of course, I do."
Ricciardo snorted and shook his head. "Yeah, I figured, but I mean, do you like her?"
Oscar blinked several times, and it wasn't until Ricciardo emphasized the penultimate word he said that Oscar understood what he meant.
"We're friends, I never, uh—," he stumbled a bit, not knowing how to respond.
"So I guess that means yes," Daniel grinned widely, seeing his reaction. "You should invite her here. It would be good for her to occupy her mind with something else now. And she'll appreciate being able to talk to you face to face, not just over the phone."
"I don't know if she'd want to fly all this way just to see me," he replied, causing Daniel to look at him indulgently. "She's never made me feel like I'm anything more than a friend to her."
"Maybe this is the moment to show her that she's had the right guy in front of her all this time," he said, getting up as the set ended. "Cause Aussies always do it better, right?"
Oscar pondered Daniel's suggestion for a long time, but when he went to bed, he decided to offer his friend a visit to Melbourne. Before he went to sleep, he sent her a message with an invitation, honestly not knowing what reaction to expect from her. Of course, he assured her that he would cover all the costs of her transportation, but he still wasn't sure if she would agree to travel such a distance just to see him.
When he woke up in the morning and picked up his phone, he had to rub his eyes in amazement several times. She agreed immediately. She even asked if she could fly to him on the fastest plane, to which he naturally agreed. As a result, she was already at the airport the next evening. Unfortunately, Oscar couldn't pick her up personally, but someone was willing to offer their help on-site.
"Hi, you must be Y/N," Daniel's wide smile and his Australian accent were the first things to greet the girl on the new continent. "I'm Daniel, and it's a pleasure to meet you."
She nodded, returning his smile and shaking his outstretched hand.
"It's very nice to meet you too, and I'm sorry Oscar roped you into this," she replied as he silently took her suitcase. "I could have taken a taxi."
"Absolutely no need to apologize, I'm just glad I could personally welcome you to our beautiful country," he said with a smile. It was past midnight, and Y/N wondered where her newfound companion got so much energy from. "First time in Australia, am I right?"
"Yes, I've never been here before. Actually, it's only the second time in my life I've flown on a plane."
"Really?" Daniel looked at her in shock, and she just shyly nodded. "And Oscar managed to convince you to take such a trip?"
"Actually, I was very excited about the invitation," she admitted, but at one point, she bit her tongue. However, when she glanced at Daniel again, she got the impression that he wouldn't be too concerned about some stranger girl occupying him with trivialities. "A lot has been going on with me lately, and I'm glad to have a reset here."
"I'll gladly join as your local guide and mood lifter," he offered, opening the car door for her. "Of course, if you're up for it and if Oscar is willing to share his best friend."
The girl chuckled, genuinely for the first time in a few days. She eagerly nodded at his proposal.
"I'd love to. And I don't think Oscar will mind."
The journey passed in lightning speed with a conversation that looked like they had known each other for ages, not just a few dozen minutes. When Daniel parked in the driveway, Oscar was already standing in front of the house, waiting for his friends.
"Everything you've learned from me, you haven't actually learned from me," Daniel said, throwing a quick glance at Oscar, which brought a smile back to the girl's face and her hasty nod. Both got out of the car, and Daniel, without taking no for an answer, took her bags. The girl smiled even wider at the sight of her friend, who started walking towards her. She hugged him tightly without a word, and he closed her in a tight embrace.
Daniel smiled at the sight and just raised his thumb. Oscar returned the gesture.
The trio entered the house, and Daniel left the girl's things in the living room doorway before stretching.
"I'll be off," he announced, looking around at them. "It was very nice to meet you, and I hope we'll see each other again soon."
"You can stay if you want," Oscar offered. "We probably won't go to bed soon anyway, and I owe you a beer for today."
"I definitely won't be able to sleep anytime soon, despite the hour," the girl added, checking the time on her phone before shifting her gaze to Daniel and Oscar. "But I have the least to say because it's not me facing the home Grand Prix in a few days."
"Well, why not, gladly," Ricciardo replied, agreeing to the suggestion with a smile.
Shortly after, the three of them were sitting on the terrace. The evening was pleasant, so they decided not to disturb Oscar's family and spend time outside. The conversation was already flowing smoothly, and with each subsequent beer, any inhibitions and barriers disappeared more and more. At some point, it looked like a meeting of three close friends after years.
"He acted like a complete dick," Daniel summed up Y/N's story, taking a sip from the can he held. "Look at it from a different angle, you could have skipped this party and not confronted him. He would probably cheat on you behind your back if he wasn't already."
Oscar looked at him meaningfully, not wanting him to further distress her. However, she seemed to come to terms with the whole situation. She certainly looked better than she did a few days ago when she tearfully talked to Oscar on the phone.
"Possible," the girl sighed, holding her own can. Her head was a bit fuzzy, but she liked this state better than feeling sadness. "Oh God, how could I be so stupid."
"It happens to the best of us," Daniel smiled reassuringly at her.
"The worst thing is, you told me many times that he's not the right guy for me, that he's not a good person at all," she continued, now looking at Oscar, who was sitting next to her. Daniel, sitting in the chair opposite, looked at him meaningfully, but he had his gaze fixed on the girl. "And I still thought I knew better. I'll never question your instincts again, Osc. Never."
She said, then hugged him tightly. Oscar returned the hug, rubbing her back. "It doesn't matter now. It happened, and that's it."
"You said he's not the right guy for you," Daniel began, and Oscar looked at him at the moment when he released his friend from the hug. He shook his head slightly, knowing where he was going with this. But this train couldn't be stopped. "Is there any guy you think would be right for you?"
The girl thought for a moment, turning the can in her hands. However, alcohol placed a certain thought in her head, which made her smile. She just nodded in response, raising her gaze to the man sitting opposite her.
"Oh, you're flattering me," Daniel laughed, taking another sip of beer.
"For the past few minutes, I've been noticing that I kind of like Aussies," she added, glancing at Oscar. He was so shocked when she subtly announced that she liked Daniel in an unexpected way that he didn't even notice when her gaze lingered on his lips. However, Daniel noticed it perfectly.
"And you, Oscar?" Ricciardo asked, stretching his legs out in front of him, a moment after he took another sip of his beer. "Do you have anyone in mind?"
Piastri almost choked on his beer when he finished it. His cheeks were instantly flushed, and it had nothing to do with the alcohol he had just consumed. Y/N raised her gaze to her friend's face, curious herself about his answer to the question, as Oscar had never shared his romantic affairs with her, even when she repeatedly asked about them.
When he, embarrassed, couldn't utter a word, Y/N's gaze returned to Daniel, and she decided to answer for her friend. "Oscar probably hasn't met the right person yet," she said, taking a sip of beer. "He's never told me that he likes any girl, even when I asked hundreds of times. Recently, I even started asking if it's not a girl, then maybe a boy? After all, there's nothing wrong with a relationship with two boys or two girls. And Lando," she looked at her friend again, "he's quite charming. And it seems to me that you two have a good relationship."
"Landoscar? Oh definitely, I've been thinking about it many times myself," Daniel interjected, pointing his finger and agreeing with her words.
Oscar, seeing how they were encouraging each other, knew he had to act. And since words got stuck in his throat, and he didn't know how to defend himself, he silently touched his friend's cheek and turned her head towards him, kissing her. Despite her shock, she returned the kiss. Daniel smiled. He felt like giving himself a high-five.
After a moment, Oscar pulled away from his friend. His heart was pounding like crazy, and her questioning gaze wandering over his face didn't make it any easier for him to gather his thoughts.
"You, Y/N, I like you," he finally said. "I've liked you since you invited me over to work on a biology project in eleventh grade. We were just starting to be friends, and I already felt something more for you. Nothing has changed since then."
"Why didn't you ever tell me?" she asked, looking at him, but he lowered his gaze.
"I always felt like I was more of a brother to you than potential boyfriend material,"
"Oscar…," the girl sighed, looking at him indulgently. "Do you know how many broken hearts you would have saved me if you had told me earlier?"
Oscar looked up at her. And just as he felt like an idiot when he decided to make his bold move, now he was wondering if there was a chance she felt the same way about him.
"I thought I was just your friend. And that you didn't want someone who couldn't keep up with your pace of life. After all, why would you need a girlfriend you couldn't have by your side?"
"I would spend all my money to have my girlfriend by my side,"
After these words, silence fell. Oscar and Y/N looked at each other in silence, and Daniel, sitting next to them, pressed the cool edge of the can to his lips and watched the whole scene with bated breath.
"Do you want us to be together?" the girl asked after a moment. She decided to put everything on the line.
"Yes, Y/N, I want us to be together," he said, looking her in the eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier and spared you so many broken hearts. But I assumed that a long-distance relationship would break your heart even more."
Oscar lowered his head. He wasn't lying. The truth was that one of the reasons he didn't confess his feelings to the girl was that he already found it hard with a long-distance friendship, let alone having the possibility to see his girlfriend once a month or less. Oscar had countless layers of love within him. However, he was afraid that if he turned on the tap, he would cause a flood, injuring not only her but also himself.
"Come here," she whispered softly, pulling herself closer to him and hugging him tightly. He closed his eyes and embraced her just as tightly, burying his face in her hair.
"Surely you'll be happy with such a guy," Daniel spoke up after a while, smiling. "If not, you know where to find me. However, Aussies always do it better."
When The Morning Comes
pairing: Danny Wagner x Reader
wc: 2.4k+
warnings: none
summary: Seems like it's just your luck that you get sick right before a date. But not just any date, a Valentine's Day date. But not just any Valentine's Day date, a double Valentine's Day date with your good friend, Danny. So much for being a good wingman. With nothing better to do, you settle into your coziest blanket and sulk, doomed to spend your Valentine's Day evening alone. Or so you think...
a/n: I saw @seenoversundown's GVF Valentine's Day Writing Event and decided to workshop this regular idea I had in the backburner to something more in theme! Hope you enjoy, I've written fan fiction in general for a long while, but this is actually my first one-shot. Happy Valentine's Day!
----------------------------------------------------
“I know, I know!” You groan into your phone, staring down at the bright, red glow of the electronic thermometer. You’d been feeling under the weather since this morning, but you didn't think it was this bad. The sleek dress hanging from the closet door practically mocks you while you already beat yourself up. “I didn’t think I’d feel this… shitty. I’m sorry.”
Danny chuckles over the phone, seemingly unbothered. “You sure you aren’t faking it? You’re always somehow not feeling well right before events.” He sucks his teeth and you can only imagine his dumb disapproving smirk. “Seems pretty convenient, (Y/N).”
“It’s not convenient, Daniel. It’s bad luck.” Collapsing into your bed, you sigh, practically radiating guilt. “Especially tonight. I feel terrible having to bail on this date. It’s like my first real date since…” A grin creeps its way across your lips as you giggle at the thought.
“Since our date?” The both of you begin laughing, a clear confirmation of his response. Danny was simply a friend of a friend of a friend before you two had met. New to the area and looking to start dating, a friend of yours thought Danny would be the perfect match for you. Instead of allowing you to interact in any way beforehand to let things naturally take its course, the casanovas that were your mutual friends decided the blind date approach would be best. And of course it wasn’t. The chemistry just wasn’t there. You were awkward. There was a lot of dead silence and extremely polite small talk. To make matters even worse, everyone had failed to mention he was fresh out of a relationship. Only after the fact did he tell you he wasn’t even looking for a relationship, that our friends had basically forced him to go on the date.
Lucky for you, he was always interested in making friends and that’s what you became. Good friends. Really good friends, in fact. Joined at the hip, your friends would say with a tacked on eyeroll for good measure. “Yes, since our date. No one could treat me nearly as well as you did that night.”
“Oh? Is that why you haven’t been on any other dates?” You both laugh at his quip, but it does leave a strange feeling in your chest. Unbeknownst to Danny, he was the reason you hadn’t been on any other dates. Sure, the date didn’t really leave you with any feelings, but once your friendship blossomed so did your unrequited crush. Being around Danny just felt… easy. Which is exactly why you had to leave it as is. It’s such a cliche, but it’s cliche for a reason. He’s basically your best friend at this point. To make things awkward or face rejection from one of the most important people in your life is something you’d go through hell and back to avoid. “I guess I’ll just have to cancel the date.”
Just the thought makes you feel even more guilty. “Danny, no. You can’t just ditch the girl. On Valentine’s Day, no less.” It’s a bit comforting that you don't have to go on a double date on Valentine’s Day and watch the man you’d rather date, date someone else. “Oh man, I should probably call him to cancel, right?”
“It’s fine, I’ll-”
“You’re going on this date, Danny. Let me know how good it went tomorrow, alright? Bye!” You end the call intentionally before he could utter another word. Searching for your date’s contact in your phone, you get a text notification that simply says one word.
Asshole.
----------------------------------------------------
Bundled up on the couch watching reruns of old shows isn’t how you expected to spend your Valentine’s Day, but here you are. Your eyes fall to the time on your phone. 7:36pm. If that damn thermometer didn’t say you had a fever, you could’ve been out right now at a fancy restaurant, eating fancy food, dressed all fancy. Probably still feeling like shit, but at least you would’ve looked great. Not like how you look now: hair matted down from resting in your pseudo blanket fort, eyes dark and weary, falling in and out of consciousness. It’s an exhilarating time.
Grabbing the phone, you scroll mindlessly online and occasionally check the status of your DoorDash order. A little comfort fast food should make you feel better, right? It’s supposed to be here soon. As you swipe through your socials, you see a picture of… your date and Danny’s date together? Which wouldn’t be too weird except for the fact that Danny is in none of these pictures. Your first instinct is to send the pictures over to him with simply a question mark. A few moments pass and you see that he sees your message, but doesn’t respond. Asshole.
A knock on your door startles you from staring at your phone. With an achy groan, you stand from your couch and peer out your window, hoping to see someone with a bag of food walking from their car, but no. Nothing from this view. They really must’ve dropped it off and zoomed away. You swing the door open, desperate for your food.
“Danny?” His name leaves your mouth in shock before you even process the rest of the view. A beautiful bouquet in hand, dressed equally as comfortable as you, and… your bag of food? You point at the brown paper bag, very confused. “How did you-”
“He was bringing it out the same time I was walking up to your door so he just sorta handed it to me,” he laughs, whether it be at the situation or at your general look of shock, staring at him with mouth slightly agape. It’s as if he could read your mind, ready to question him. “You really thought I was gonna let you spend Valentine’s Day by yourself, (Y/N)?”
“Well, yeah! You had a date!” You weakly shove him and chuckle.
“It’s fine. She was understanding. I had someone I needed to take care of.” The flush of your cheeks are impossible to hide. Narrowing your eyes, your mouth opens and shuts as you try to find a rebuttal, but nothing comes out. Accepting your defeat, you step aside and silently invite him in. He hands you your bag of food and beelines straight for the kitchen.
You watch him with your head tilted while he scavenges through your cabinets. “What are you doing?” He mutters something, but you can’t quite catch it. “What- Oh.” He pulls out a vase and fills it with water, setting the bouquet inside. With an almost childish look of pride, he stands beside it and gestures with his hands.
“For you.”
“Thank you… for the hand-me-down flowers.” He shakes his head, making his way back to your living room. A gentle squeeze of your shoulder while he passes that will surely echo in your head the entire night.
“I got them specifically for you. I canceled right after our phone call. These plans-” He motions to everything around him before tossing himself onto the couch, clearly getting comfy right beside your sick blanket pile. “-were already in motion.”
You sigh before sitting beside him, wrapping your blanket around your shoulder and placing your bag of food on the floor. “You really didn’t have to. Plus, you’re gonna get sick.” His hand waves dismissively and he tugs on your blanket, now wrapping around both of you. This closeness between you two isn’t unusual by any means, but tonight, there’s just something different about it. Maybe that’s hope or delusion talking. Or maybe you’re just loopy from cough medicine. Probably that.
Grabbing your food, he takes a handful of fries and puts them in his mouth. “I never get sick.” You snatch the bag back and start eating as well, begrudgingly sharing with him. Falling into idle chatter, the two of you get more and more comfortable. His arm draped over your shoulders, your head practically nestled into his neck. Just friends being friends. He really came here on Valentine’s to do… absolutely nothing with you.
Your eyes begin to slowly flutter shut on occasion, the weary and tired energy taking over you. “You okay?” He pulls away ever so slightly to glance down at you, just checking in. That small retreat from him causes you to instinctually latch onto him. The vibration of his soft laughter reverberates against you. “Alright, let’s get you to bed.” You groan, but comply as he stands from the couch, leaving you with an empty space that you long for him to fill. He takes your hand and guides you to your own bedroom.
Like a moth to a flame, your bed calls out to you. Without moving the top sheets or decorative throws, you face plant directly into a pillow and let out a heavy sigh of relief. It’s almost enough to forget about Danny, admiring you with a soft chuckle. You roll over and look up at him, standing at the foot of your bed. Just the image is enough to make you blush, considering this scene in another circumstance, but you quickly shirk those thoughts. Something suddenly comes to mind. “Oh, check my vinyls. I got a new one,” your voice comes out slow and groggy, tinged with your sleepy smile.
He steps over to your record player, crouching down to look into your box of vinyls. Sitting right in front is Hall & Oates Abandoned Luncheonette. You watch as a small grin crosses his lips. “One of my favorites,” he plainly mutters, sliding the record out of the sleeve and putting it on the turntable. When The Morning Comes starts to play, filling the space in your room.
“I got it because I remembered you talking about it. Hall & Oates is also just great so,” you mumble, the sleep still pulling you in and out of consciousness. Your eyes close for a moment and you feel the bed shift beside you. Opening them slightly, you glance over to see Danny laying beside you, his fingers tapping on his chest along to the beat of the song. Without a word, you cuddle up to him, resting your head against his arm. “Staying the night?”
“Of course.”
“Good.” You both chuckle at the response. It’s a little forward of you, but with how tired and weak you are, you let your walls come down. “Y’know, I’m really glad you came over tonight.”
“There’s nothing else in the world I’d rather do than spend time with you.” His eyes fall on you while he adjusts, bringing you into his arms. “Even if you’re practically dead right now.”
“I am.” You’re honestly glad the meds and the illness are making you as loose as you are right now. Because otherwise you’d be through the roof with all this attention and affection he’s giving you. “So dead, but I’m still happy you’re here. Does this count as our second date?”
He laughs and shrugs. “If it is, I think it went way better than our first.” His fingers absentmindedly rake through your hair as you continue to drift off. A small silence falls between you before he quietly speaks. “Maybe we should try that again…” Hearing that shocks you, but physically, you can’t hold your exhaustion back. A small mhm leaves your lips as you fall unconscious.
----------------------------------------------------
Sunlight pours into your bedroom, casting a soft glow across you. You yawn and try to stretch, but feel an assortment of your limbs tangled with something else, someone else. Looking over, Danny’s fast asleep, his arms wrapped around you in a bear hug, his legs intertwined with yours. It causes you to chuckle, but deep down, your heart races being so close to him. His dark curls falling over his face, his soft lips parted ever so slightly, the rise and fall of his chest as he breathes deeply.
In a moment of selfish desire, you take his hand in yours, trailing your fingers with a gentle touch along his skin. A twitch causes you to quickly withdraw. You feel him stir in his sleep, but he only pulls you closer. “Morning…” His voice, groggy and husky, almost startles you just as much as it intrigues you. It’s as if you can feel his hesitation, a hesitation you share as he loosens his grip, allowing you to fully turn and face him. Just inches apart, a strange feeling between you two lingers.
“Morning. Sleep well?”
“Amazing.” You can’t tell if he’s being sarcastic or not. “I can feel your sickness in my immune system as we speak.” Yeah, sarcasm.
“Well, I actually do feel better now.”
There’s a short pause, a moment where your eyes lock and a shared chuckle occurs. “Just admit you wanted me all to yourself last night, that you weren’t sick at all.”
“I was sick, but…” Feeling emboldened, you shoot back, “Maybe it was both.”
“Did you… hear what I said last night? Before you passed out.” For the first time in a while, you hear what seems to be nerves from Danny’s voice. Just in bringing it up, it seems obvious that he was being genuine. Something you would’ve casted off as just a joke because he wouldn’t really want to go on another date with you, surely.
Your eyes can’t help, but quickly flit between his lips and his own dark eyes, staring straight through you. “I did.” It’s as if he’s holding his breath, waiting for you to answer with actual awareness this time, but you hold back. If something like this is truly happening, you want him to fully repeat it.
“Do you want to try again?” The moment only grows in intimacy once his hand slowly comes up to your face, pushing aside strands of hair. “I think we’d have a better shot this time, (Y/N).”
You nod, causing you both to smile. “I think so too.” His eyes do the same dance as yours, admiring your lips. Accepting the invitation, he leans in, connecting his lips to yours. It’s a sweet and safe kiss, very brief. “You usually kiss girls before the first date?”
He laughs and shakes his head, rolling his eyes in a playful display of annoyance. “It’s basically our third.”
“God, our third date. Things are going pretty well for us, I guess.” Another kiss is shared before you pull away, giggling. “And we just missed Valentine’s Day. That would’ve been a perfect date.”
“What do you mean? Wrapped up on the couch with you coughing all over me was my dream date.”
“Oh, you’re definitely gonna get sick.”
“And it’ll definitely be worth it.”
I need more Daniel fics or headcanons😿 Can you make more of them? I'm in love with your writings btw 😻😻😻
Daniel Park ; Park Hyung Seok x Reader (Headcannons)
Sure xD! I also simp for Daniel so no problem! (And thx for the support!) I'll be including some parts on my other post: "Lookism Men x Female Reader (Their types on a woman PART 1) J-High Main Boys. But I'll put a different spin on this one so I hope you enjoy! Genre: fluff☁️ and slight angst🥀 Warnings: mentions of bullying, insecurities (reader is gender neutral)
Tumblr media
Trust me when I say this. Daniel will be one of the most loving and caring boyfriends in the world.
Like I said, Daniel's type doesn't rely on how good looking a person is. It's how good the person is. He pretty much avoids red flags since the incident with his first crush. But his standards are not too high though since he knows that nobody's perfect.
He pretty much likes someone who can be dependable and trust-worthy. Even when he still doesn't have his second body, he's often being pushed on the side and treated like trash. So befriending him is the first step to gain his trust. He'll have a crush on you if you treat his original body kindly. But no matter what size or shape he's in, if you always treat him with respect then expect him to fell harder. After a very long time to getting to know you better he'll probably tell you about his second body.
If you're the introverted type, he'll be a bit hesitant to talk to you since he's afraid that he's bothering you. But after getting to know that you're just really quiet and closeted sometimes, he'll be staying on your side most of the times (though he's willing to give you space if you asked him to. Respect).
If he confessed to you on his original body and you gladly accepted to be his partner, he'll probably burst into tears. Since he's been longing for acceptance by other people for his real self and not just that side that most people fawn for. Or, since he's much better at expressing his thoughts and feelings through letters he'll write one for you. He'll also react in an emotional way on his second body since he feels like many people only like him for his looks :/.
But I think it just depends on the time I guess. If he's still being bullied, he won't have the guts to tell you about his crush since he's afraid of rejection and getting hurt. But after getting his second body he'll be more confident to ask you out but he's still hesitant to take the next step since he wants to take things slowly. But if it's in the Workers timeline he'll put his feelings aside since he doesn't want you to be put on potential danger.
And Zack will be on his side like the best wingman he is and he'll give the letter to you while Danny is hiding on the corner since he's too embarrassed to face you. "Hey dummy, Daniel wants to give this to you." the boxer gave you a pink envelope with a heart sticker to seal it while you looked at him confused as you can see the smirk forming on his lips. You can hear Zoe and Mira squealing in excitement. "Y/N LET ME SEE THE NOTE!" "C'mon Zoe let her/him read the letter for herself/himself!"
"To dear Y/N,"
Before I start, I always want you to know that you're one of the most special people in my life. You're a really nice person and a trust worthy friend. You always help me out when I'm down even you yourself have your own troubles in your personal life. Yet you always choose to stay beside me. You're also a very helpful person, not only me but to everybody. That's why I think I started liking you even more. What I mean is, in that way. Though I don't expect you to reciprocate my feelings back. I just want to let out these feelings that has been on my thoughts for a while and just be really honest with you. I'm looking forward for your response though! :)
-Sincerely Daniel
And the moment you read the note, you can't help but to tell your feelings for him too. I swear, you and him will be the perfect couple.
Daniel's go to dates are something simple but special. Since he doesn't have lots of money, he'll just take you to random dates on food stalls (trust me he's good at picking food), picnics on parks, or just staying at home cuddling or playing games. But after gaining a job and Steve Hong paying him lots of money, he'll take you to more fancy places like hanging out on expensive land parks (Disney Land, Universal Studio, etc.). But he'll be careful and protective of you though since his feud with the Workers can hurt you and ruin your special date.
He'll also be the type to say cheesy pick up lines on your very first date xD. It maybe awkward but seeing you laugh (not because your making fun of him but thinking he's cute for making an effort to make you smile) just makes him happy.
He's pretty shy at the beginning to be honest. Daniel will try to kiss you bunch of times when you get into dates but when you turn to look at him he'll pull away fast. But if you initiate the kiss like pecking his cheeks or lips, he'll hide and curl into a ball lmao (but he'll reciprocate the kiss though!). But if you're like him, he'll be the first one to make a move like holding your pinky finger with his. And if he really wants to kiss you, he'll never forget to ask permission though! (he doesn't want to make you uncomfortable). "Y-Y/N, can I kiss you?" you can definitely hear the shy and nervous tone on his voice. "Of course, come here." you smiled at him as you leaned to leave a smooch on him as you can feel the smile forming on his soft and pinkish lips.
Daniel will melt into your touch. Simply just pet his hair or hold his hand while complimenting him makes his heart flutter. He really is a puppy coded man!
His love language is through words and act of service. If you're feeling down or insecure, he'll comfort you a lot since he hates you seeing upset. He'll remind you of how you're one of the most special people in his life (along with his mom) and how you make him happy. And he'll often give you lots of little gifts like letters about how much he loves you with cute decorations that you really like (for example: stickers of your favorite flowers or characters) and buying your favorite snacks. He also can't maintain long eye-contact with you since he's still getting shy despite you being his partner (and you're really pretty/handsome too but he's afraid that he'll creep you out for staring at you for too long).
And he'll be so protective of you. If it's his pre-training, he'll be more hesitant to help you not because he doesn't want to but because he's afraid that he'll screw up and he'll unconsciously hurt you even more. Though after gathering his courage and with the help of his second body, he'll be willing to shield you against his enemies with no hesitation. He'll kick everybody's ass on whoever tries to lay their finger on you.
Daniel also likes spending his time with you on the kitchen especially when you don't know how to cook. Since he's used to living alone he knows the basics and he's willing to teach you! (it can be a bit messy in the end lmao). But he'll be leaning on your shoulder while you're just standing there blushing xD.
And he'll 100% support you on your hobbies! (As long it's not too weird). Whether it's music, art, or even gaming he can't help but to be impressed at your skills. It can be also a great bonding time for the both of you if you taught him about it.
He can also make you laugh without even trying. He's not a professional comedian but his innocence just makes you laugh often (especially if you're the dirty minded type lmao). "Huh? What's deez nuts?" "Bruh you don't know?" you smiled at his dumbfounded look as he looked at you with that cute and confused expression. "Why did you called me bruh? Did you just friend zoned me?" he teased with that puppy eyes again as you slightly elbowed him making him chuckle. "Stop acting cute dummy." "I'm your dummy I know."
After for a long time he'll definitely do PDA in public like holding your hands, hugging you from behind, and giving you lots of pecks. He'll also whine and pull out that puppy eyes all the time when he's upset or when you're teasing him lmao.
If you're getting into arguments, Daniel be on the calmer side since he really hates it when he looses his temper and he doesn't want the flame to spread and cause more chaos. He knows that having misunderstandings can be healthy for you to challenge your communication skills but he'll be the type to just brush off the topic. It can be frustrating for you if you're the confrontable type. But since Daniel has lots of good empathy he'll be willing to listen to your points as long as you listen to him too.
And you often forget that you're dating the other version of him so it will slip of your mind if you're with his other body (he also tends to forgot). So many people will think that you're cheating on the other Daniel which can cause misunderstandings. Good thing you and Danny can make up a white lie on it.
And of course, Daniel is aware of the potential dangers in the future that's why he's making an effort to be stronger so that he can protect you. Though your comforts always makes him calm and composed and he really loves you for the way you are as much as you love him. Not only because of his looks but also because his personality and his effort to be a healthier version of him, physically and mentally :).
A/N: Sheesh. That's my take on Daniel with Y/N. I think I'll make NSFW headcannons for him and the others (along with other fanfictions. I still hoped you liked it!).
Chapter 29 of 'Artificial wingman'!
For the full story on ao3, click Here!
Enjoy!
---
Damian let the door shut quietly behind him, flipping the lock before he took a seat on the edge of the bathtub. Outside the bathroom, he could hear Jasmine and Danny playfully arguing about something mundane, their voices somewhat pleasant in terms of background noise. Jason had left not long ago, having said something about having some business that needed to be taken care of while he waited for their order to be filled.
He had sat in the living room, Danny's bag resting beside him, when something had caught his eye. Only now, alone in the bathroom, did he dare to take the pilfered object out of his pocket. a soft golden light engulfed his hands the minute he pulled it out, casting his face in a yellow glow when he brought it closer to examine.
The cure, a potion that cancels other potion effects on a person. In any other situation, he would find such a thing remarkable. Even now, he couldn't help but wonder if it would work on other magic-based effects, slightly in awe of how versatile it could potentially be. But that awe was tempered by the knowledge of what this jar was for in the first place.
He stared hard at the golden liquid, observing the way it swished and swirled in the jar, trails of what looked like a cross between glitter and stardust tracing hypnotic patterns in the thick solution. 'I could drink this right now,' the thought came unbidden, his fingers digging into the ridges on the lid slightly. Part of him wanted to. Wanted to twist the cap off and drain the contents. Wanted to prove, once and for all, that his feelings weren't just because of the potion.
Another part of him wanted to drop the jar like it had burned him. To throw the jar and watch the potion splatter uselessly onto the wall. Or swirl down the drain of the sink, any possible traces of it washed away by water, like it never existed. It couldn't have the chance to prove him wrong if it was gone, after all.
Damian did neither of those, instead sitting the jar down gently on the counter. Sighing, he allowed himself to drop his facade of calm and collectiveness. His shoudler's drooped with tiredness, his head dropping into his hands as he tried to sort out his feelings. Coming from an emotionally dysfunctional family didn't help him much when it came to feelings, but he tried his best not to fall back on his training.
He knew fear, it was a garantee to feel it at least once in a human life. But for a child assassin? Fear is something one becomes intimately familiar with. Maybe not his fear, but the fear of others. So he had little trouble identifying the fear that pushed forth the more... destructive ideas.
The determination and confidence that directly contradicted that fear were as much of a hindrance as they were helpful. Wilfulness is something that Damian had always displayed, even when he was loyal to his mother and Grandfather in the League.
Mother had always said that it was a trait from his father, a will of steel that kept his resolve for justice strong. Having lived with his father for a few years now, that wasn't hard to believe at all.
And now, in the midst of his conflicted feelings, he couldn't help but to fall back on that belief once again. It was different from suppressing his emotions, to instead focus all his being into the way he wished for things to turn out. If his will was half as strong as his father's, then Damian would have nothing to worry about. A little bit of fear wouldn't change thst.
Taking a deep breath, he raised his head from his hands and stood. The teen had no idea how long he had been sitting there on the edge of the tub, his legs tingling with the pins and needles feeling that always accompanied a loss of blood circulation. The apartment outside the bathroom had fallen quiet, only the chatter of the TV and the occasional shuffling of movement telling Damian that the siblings were still out there.
Picking the jar back up, Damian let his gaze trace the swirling golden patterns once more. He could drink it now, and be done with it. He could throw it and damn the consequences his actions would surely bring. But now was not the time for rash decisions. The most logical thing to do was to wait, and not force results. So for now, he would find a way to slip the jar back into it's poor hiding spot in Danny's bag, burried under the prizes from their arcade date, and enjoy the time he was given to spend with Danny. Because no matter if the potion worked or not, Danny would have to return home.
A knock on the bathroom door startled Damian from his thoughts, the teen fumbling with the jar as it slid from his hands. Heart pounding, his quick reflexes helped him re-capture the jar before it could smash on the tiled floor.
Breathing heavily, Damian stuffed the jar back into pocket and twisted the lock, throwing the door open. On the other side was Todd, his fist raised to knock again. The man blinked at him, lowering his fist to rest on his hip in a way that Brown would refer to as 'sassy'.
"There you are. You doin' okay, Demon brat? Danny said you'd been in there a while." Jason gave him a quick lookover, not moving from the doorway as he searched for possible hidden injuries.
Damian scoffed. "I am perfectly fine, Todd " He sniffed hauntingly as he shoved past the man, heading towards the living room.
"Alright, alright!" Todd tossed his hands up in the air in an exasperated manner following him down the hall. "Just making sure. It would suck if you died on me and left your boyfriend here all alone." Despite the teasing tone, Damian could detect the slight bit of serious concern radiating from him.
Before he could come up with a response that would calm his most volatile brother, Damian found himself in the living room. Danny turned around at the sound of their approach, a smile stretching his face and showing off a flash of those enticing fangs. "Robin!" He chirped excitedly. "Come sit down! Jason brought food back. I already put a vegetarian plate together for you."
Sure enough, as soon as Damian had settled onto the couch, Danny was shoving a plate of mouth watering food into his hands. The teen gave the plate an expiramental sniff before taking a bite, pleasantly surprised by the flavorful mouthful.
The teen couldn't help the small smile that quirked up his lips as he watched Danny dig into his own plate, his a mixture of both vegetarian and meat-ladened sides, though mostly vegetarian, with gusto. 'Yes,' he thought, taking another bite of his food, 'it was a good decision to hold off.'
The jar doesn't make to it's bag that night. Damian told himself that it was because Danny was too observant, that he would notice right away that something was out of place, no matter how meticulous Damian was with putting everything back. In reality, he ignored the fact that it was his own reluctance that kept the jar stashed in his pocket.
----
Back at the manor, Cass and Stephanie had begun phase one of 'Distract Dick, no matter the Cost'. Personally, Steph really liked the plan's name, but Cass insisted that it was a placeholder for the true name, still pending.
Steph crouched in the shadows, sight of her blocked by the wall she leaned against. The batcave itself was empty for the moment, Cass and Alfred having managed to spike Tim's decaf with melatonin and lead the boy up to one of the family rooms for a nap. But she knew her target would be here any minute
Sure enough, after ten minutes, Dick came Striding out of the locker room, nightwing suit snug across his chest as he made his way towards the corner she was hiding behind.
Taking a deep breath, Steph pulled her bowl away from her chest as she stood. Faking a jog, she waited until Dick began to round the corner before she struck. Purposely running into him, she let the bowl tip towards the man and slid from her fingers, dousing the blue and black of his suit in the most eye catching shade of pink she could whip up.
She let out a convincing shriek of surprise, forcing her feet to slide instead of catching herself. Landing on her butt, the girl was treated to the most amazing sight, a dumbfounded look on a bright pink Nightwing.
"Oh, god! Dick!" She stuttered in her hasty movements to get back up, selling the whole 'horrified Surprise' act even further. "I'm so, so sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going, and I was just gonna dye my hair in the sinks down here, 'cause Alfred threatened to make me scrub the upstairs sinks if I stained any of them bright pink, and- and- oh, I'm sorry!"
Her rambling apology seemed to snap him out of his stunned state, the man looking himself over for the fist time. "Hey, Steph, it's okay!" He grimaced when he saw the color, but tried to put on a calming smile as he reassured her. "It was an accident. We can just wash it out, m'kay?"
Steph almost couldn't believe how easy this was going. "Yes!" She exclaimed, tugging the man back towards the locker room. "Go and change out of it, and I'll get it clean in no time!" She didn't give the man much of a chance to protest, shoving him into the locker room and shutting the door behind him.
A few minutes later, and he had returned. Donning a t-shirt and jeans, he held out the costume for her to take. "I'll swing by later to pick it up, but for now I have to go and talk to some people." giving himself a once over, he nodded to her one last time before he made his way to the elevator.
She waited a few minutes, making sure that he was actually gone, before she took the elevator as well. Stepping out from behind the broken grandfather clock, she made sure the coast was clear before hurrying up the stairs and to one of the unused guest bathrooms.
Closing the door behind her, Stephanie turned and faced the silent girl that was already waiting for her. "Got it!" She smirks deviously, holding up the pink monstrosity that she had created. "How about you? Did you get the goods?"
Cass grinned back at her as she grabbed something from behind her. Turning back around, she proudly held up two complete nightwing suits for Steph to see.
"Nice!" Steph couldn't help but to laugh, already imagining the look on his face when he found all of his spares missing. "And you locked the storage room too?" Cass nodded her affirmation, miming a key locking before giving a thumbs up. "Perfect! Now that step one is done, I think we can safely move on to step two!"
Carefully, both girls peeked into the hallway, looking back and fourth for any wandering souls before declaring the coast clear. Moving with quiet efficiency that only a bat could accomplish, the pair made their way to a laundry room on the second floor. Honestly, Steph had no idea it was even here before, and would have just used the one down stairs, if not for Cass. Apparently, this laundry room was so seldom used that it was one of the places she went to when the hustle and bustle of the manor became too much.
Once the girls had reached their destination, Steph waisted no time in throwing the nightwing costume in the washer, purposely going against the washing instructions for their suits. Cold water instead of warm, a healthy dose of bleach, and about half a cup of the detergent that Alfred had told her was for their lounge wear only, instead of the one m0ade specifically for the kevlar- laddened fabric. Confident that the suit was probably done for now, she left her handiwork to finish on it's own. They still hand one last thing to do.
Turning to her partner in crime, Steph let her mischievous grin turn slightly more sinister. "Okay, now. Where can we hide Nightwing suits where they won't be found?" She asked, tucking the two spare costumes under her arm as she let Cass take the lead.
Walking confidently, the two wandered the mayor's maze of corridors, taking so many turns that Steph was sure her head would spin trying to remember them all. It's times like this that the girl is reminded how easy it would be to get lost in this place. How anyone could live gere without maps on the walls telling them where they are, Steph will never know.
After a few minutes of walking, they finally came to a stop in front of a closet. It looked like every other hallway closet they had passed, oak door with a shiny copper handle waiting to be opened and used as storage. There was nothing special about it, besides the fact that islt resided in a part of thr manor that usually went unvisited by anyone besides Alfred. And Cass, Steph supposes, because why else would she lead Steph halfway across the house when there were several perfectly usable closets on the way here?
She opened her mouth to ask the question on her mind, but Cass beat her to the punch. Pulling open the door, the raven haired girl crouched down and began to feel along the floor of the closet for something. Steph stepped closer, watching curiously as her fingers found purchas in a groove between the floorboards. With one swift move, she pulled upwards, the floor lifting with a low creak to reveal a small cavity hidden beneath.
Stephanie gasped in surprised delight, dropping to her knees beside Cass to examine the little hole. It was about three feet long, and two feet wide, forming a cute little cubby that ran only half a foot deep. The small space was empty, save for a few dust bunnies and a lone mothball rolled into the corner. It was perfect.
"Awesome find!" She praised her friend as she dropped the spare costumes in, letting Cass gently lower the panel back into place. Step two complete.
Standing back up, the girls dusted off their hands and knees before turning to head back to the laundry room. Their timing was amazing, as the washer cut off just as they passed the threshold.
Opening the washer, Steph was greeted by a bleach-splotched nightwing costume. None of the pink from the hair dye mixture surviced the wash, sadly, but it did an amazing job, turning the blue bird on the chest purple. Paired with the gray and tan-ish splotches decorating the shoulders and back, Steph was confident that it would be tossed into the storage room to gather dust with Discowing once this was all over.
Tossing the ruined costume into the dryer, Steph hopped up onto the slowly warming surface, kicking her legs happily. "How mad do you think Dick is gonna be when he finds out that this wasn't an accident?" She asked concersationally.
Cass brought her hand up to her chin, rubbing it contemplatively as she mulled over the question. Shrugging, she signed 'Probably not too mad. Not when he finds out it was for Damian's love life.'
Steph snickered, nodding. "Yeah, Dick is a huge softy. He'll probably forget all about this as soon as Damian tells him why. He always qets excited about these little milestones little Dami hits." She giggles again, the image of Dick fake swooning in front of Damian too funny for her.
Cass giggled quietly too, silently thinking about how Dick might get them back for this. While he would get distracted by Damian's love quest, he was not one to forgive and forget such actions. Sooner or later, the man would get his revenge on them, probably in an extremely embarrassing manner.
Cass couldn't wait.
LOVE the Drabble you posted for the Hanahaki prompt. When I noticed there wasn’t a named ‘unrequited love’, my mind immediately went: PLOT TWIST. Danny’s love for his town is slowly killing him in more ways than one.
In reference to this post from @stealingyourbones
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! See, I left that part blank purposefully so that people could bring in their own interpretations. DP x DC? Parental love? Sam/Tucker polyam with Sam and Tuck only having eyes for each other? You bring it!
But Nonnie, that never even crossed my mind and I LOVE it. It's an honour to meet such a fellow angst enthusiast!
You can do so incredibly much with this, so *cracks knuckles* let's get into this.
Okay first of all, I'm going to presume Danny knows that this is the love he's feeling. He's having trouble opening up to Jazz, because however protective he is of Amity, that's about how protective she is of him.
She, however, will not accept his silence on the subject. Her baby brother is dying, she's damn well going to find out if she can help, even if that means she's going to have to be the best wingman in history to get this done.
Danny doesn't want to tell her because he knows she'll be crushed once she finds out. How is he supposed to tell her if he knows she'll want to help him, but go mad when she realises she can't?
Still, she persists. On and on she goes. He tries to convince her: hey, this just happens sometimes. People get cancer too sometimes, can't he just enjoy the time he's got left?
Jazz argues that even people with cancer deserve a fighting chance. They don't usually give up beforehand, before even trying. Not without a proper reason, at least.
That's when it dawns on her: there's something he's not telling her, other than the identity of his love. There's something bigger going on. Her prodding becomes more and more targeted, until she manages to force just enough out of him that it suddenly clicks.
Just as Danny predicted, she's crushed when she finds out, because even she knows that making the town love him back is somthing that won't happen. She's seen enough over the past few years to know this.
What Danny hadn't predicted though, was that she was not going to accept this as a dead end, not at all.
Back to plan A, she said. Removing the plant from his lungs.
Despite Danny's protests, she goes into the Ghost Zone - alone, as Danny is far too ill at this point - and goes to see some people.
First up is Frostbite. She asks him if there is any way to teach her what to do and have him guide her through the operation, maybe via an earpeace and a camera? Unfortunately, the aswer is no. The procedure is just too complicated and precise, and there was no way he'd let her perform the operation with absolutely no chance of success. She'd fail, and only blame herself for that for the rest of her life. Despite her avid arguing, he refuses. Only when he explains to her how the procedure goes, does she get his point. There's just nothing she can do in this operation.
So, she tries a different approach.
In the real world, medics can use robotics to perform surgeries from a distance. Is that an option?
The way Frostbite's face lights up, is answer enough.
And so, the second ghost she goes to see, this time with Frostbite in tow, is Skulker.
At first when he hears what's going on, he couldn't care less. It's only when Jazz mentions how such a valuable pelt would completely go to waste, that he agrees to help. It's a good thing he did, since both Jazz and Frostbite were just about ready to tear him a new one.
So they start talking about what's possible and what isn't, and for the first time, Jazz actually starts to feel a glimmer of hope.
However, when Skulker starts to ask about the specifics of the situation, that hope melts like snow in the sun.
He asks why they'd go with the risky procedure, instead of trying to wingman their way out of this. When Jazz explains what's going on, both ghosts freeze.
Jazz doesn't want to ask why.
She does anyway, and the answer wrecks her.
Amity isn't just what Danny loves, they explain, it's his obsession. If they'd successfully remove the disease, his love for Amity would disappear alongside it. In other words: they'd be removing his obsession, the one thing that's keeping Danny together and forming his core. And if they'd harm his core, he'd fade within seconds.
So, Frostbite summarises, even if the operation was a succes, they'd kill Danny with their own hads.
And how was Jazz supposed to continue with this?
How was she supposed to go home, knowing that Danny's obsession was allowing the disease in him to survive?
How could she face Danny, knowing that the one thing killing him was his core itself?
He Didn't Have to Be
A Ron 'Slider' Kerner Imagine (Companion Piece to I Wanted to Be)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description: Jake Seresin's always know two things: 1. How much his mama loves him and 2. How much he loves her. So it's no wonder that any man he meets that his mama is dating doesn't pass the bar. Except one. His Uncle Danny's wingman, a man he knows as Uncle Ron or Uncle Sly.
Warnings: Dead-beat dad, Mentioned Pregnancy, Mentioned Childbirth, Tooth Rotting Fluff
Word Count: 3021
A/N: This is the companion piece to my Ron 'Slider' Kerner piece I Wanted to Be, written by popular demand. In this one we see Jake's perspective on the events of his childhood.
AO3: Cross-posted Here!
My Masterlist
Tumblr media
Jake's always known that things could have been very different. A lot of it has to do with how he's been raised. Rebecca Seresin née Petersen is the best mama a boy could ever ask for. For as long as he can remember it's been him and his mom against the world. His mom doesn't have any other family, not really, anyways. Jake knows his mom loves him, knows that she would do anything for him. But he’s never quite known if she’s actually happy. The only time he sees her smile is in the old scrapbooks filled with pictures of his mom as a kid. It’s something he wonders every time his mom leaves him in the care of old Mrs. Thompson at the ranch next door and drives away in her best dress. Will Mama finally be happy again if this date goes well? His wishes and hopes don't work though. Mama always looks sadder when she comes to pick him up than when she left.
My momma used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run
The only time Mama doesn't look sad is when she's baking. She makes packages once a month that she fills with cookies and cakes and pictures. The weekends when Mama bakes all of the goodies is always Jake's favorite. The kitchen's always bright and clean and it smells so good. Mama always has the record player on and on those early mornings are some of his favorites. If only because Jake gets to help stir and lick the spoon. Once everything has been cooled and packed up, they get into Mama's truck and make the drive into Austin to drop the package in the mailbox. It’s Jake’s favorite part of the week because everything seems so filled with possibilities when there’s something sweet in his tummy.
Jake’s two months shy of his fifth birthday when an old friend of his Uncle Daniel's drops by. He’s about a million miles tall and intercepts Jake just as he’s running out to play with the new goat kids in the barn. Mama had tried to wrestle him into a new shirt for the visit, but like all precocious little boys, he'd wriggled right out of the constricting stiff garment and run right out the front door. Of course before he could get very far, he’s being hefted up into the sky and looking into a face he half remembers his mama showing him the pictures of. She had told him in her pretty soft voice, “This, baby, is your Uncle Daniel and this was his best friend, your Uncle Ron. Uncle Ron’s nickname is Slider. Can you say that for me, baby?”
Jake’s soon being turned upside down and it’s the most fun he’s ever had. He barely notices how the older man introduces himself, at least until he’s being set on his feet in the kitchen to see his mama smiling at this man. He can’t resist hugging his mama’s legs, piping out in a break in the conversation, “Mama, Uncle Sly's here!” Jake still remembers how he spent the rest of the weekend trailing Uncle Sly around on the ranch, following the older man as he completed repairs and helped around. He’d been given his first cowboy hat that weekend, from Uncle Sly. It has to be one of the best weekends of his entire life.
I met the man I call my dad when I was five years old
He took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go
The smile on his mama’s face? Jake doesn’t see it again for a long, long time.
He’s fifteen years old when he realizes that Mama doesn’t go out on dates anymore. Jake’s used to being mostly alone in the house, making peanut butter sandwiches for snack and doing his homework by himself. Mama’s usually out in the fields, working the cattle. She still smiles big and hugs Jake when she gets home though, wrapping him in her gardenia scented embrace and praising him for finishing his work. He feels bad for playing football most days, feels bad for Mama when she pulls overtime out on the ranch, feels worse when she stays up late over the dining room table looking over the bills. That terrible feeling sticks around when they start getting letters at the house. Letters from somebody claiming to be his dad. Jake staggers up the driveway one afternoon to a strange car in the drive and yelling coming from the house.
“Damnit, Brian!” Mama’s roaring at him. “You can’t come back here after all of these years and beg me to give you money. I divorced you. You owe me money. Our son is fifteen and the best thing in my life. Every penny I make is for him and only him.”
“Yeah…” The voice that slurs and sneers out the words makes Jake feel sick. “Our son, right? Where is the little brat? Would love ‘ta meet him one of these days. See if he’s actually like his ole man. Or if he’s like his slut of a ma.”
That’s when Jake’s legs give out. He’s still sitting on the porch in his dirt and sweat encrusted football gear when a truck pulls into the driveway. Heart in his throat, Jake stands up, running when he sees Uncle Slider stepping out of the cab.
"Uncle Sly." Jake sounds young, young and scared today, not anything like his affected gruff tone to impress girls at school.
"What is it, kid?" Jake knows that everything will be alright so long as Uncle Slider is here. "Where's your mom, kid?'
"She's in there, Uncle Sly, in the kitchen. With a man who's claiming to be my dad." His voice is quiet, unsure. All Jake wants is his mama. Uncle Sly’s jaw clenches and anger burns bright in his eyes as he whirls around and marches right into the kitchen. Jake follows behind him, a part of him aching to grab onto the tails of the flannel shirt Uncle Sly is wearing like he used to when he was a kid.
"Brian." Mama sags like a marionette with its strings cut at Uncle Sly’s voice. So this is his dad. Brian Seresin. The boogey-man come to life. The monster. It’s obvious Jake is his son. The same nose sits on his face and the same blonde hair sits on his head. But while Jake is young, lithe and muscular from hours of football and tanned from the sun, Brian Seresin is greasy and stinking of liquor.
"What are you doing back in Cistern?" Uncle Sly’s voice is a barely held back roar as he looms protectively in front of Jake. Uncle Sly pulls Mama behind his back and Jake is quick to wrap his arms around her. Was Mama always so thin? So frail? When did Jake become as tall as she is?
"Wanted my woman back, Kerner. And my kid." Jake can’t hide his disgust as Brian sniffs, wiping away snot on his mud streaked pants. "S'not fair, y'know? That you got to keep her and the brat while I was off. D'she treat y'well? She's great in bed, ain't she?"
His dad’s words fill Jake with an impotent rage. But he can’t do anything. Not with Mama clutching at him like she’ll lose him if she lets go. Jake’s not sure what Uncle Sly says to his dad, because all of a sudden he begins to spit out why he wants the money he’d been asking Mama for. Uncle Sly lets the disgusting man spit poison words into the kitchen and then finally speaks.
"Call Sheriff Weatherby, Becks." Jake’s never heard his Uncle Sly so cold, so angry as he continues. "We've got an intruder on Seresin Ranch."
No matter what he does, Mama doesn’t move. It's Jake who picks up the landline and dials up Sheriff Weatherby. Jake and Uncle Sly stick by Mama the whole time the police are asking questions, propping her up. But after all the drama died down, when Mama is fitfully asleep in her bed, Jake’s thoughts still reel. He can’t believe that a part of him came from that! When the thoughts and questions get too loud, Jake retreats outside, to the swing Uncle Sly had set up a couple of years ago. It’s an old tire swing and Jake slumps into it staring up at the endless expanse of the stars.
He’s been feeling weird for a while. He knows it’s not just puberty. Something is eating at him, and he’s not sure why. All of the teachers at school have been pestering on and on about whether he’s decided what he wants to do with his life when he grows up. Honestly, since he was little, Jake’s only ever wanted to do one thing. He’s grown up listening to tales of the sky. But will Mama ever let him fly? Can Mama take the risk of losing him like she lost Uncle Daniel? The soft rustling sound of footsteps in the tall grass is what has his head lifting up. It’s Uncle Slider, of course it is. The minute he’s in earshot, the words are spilling out, whether Jake wants them to or not.
"So, that's him, huh? My pops, the man who walked out before I was even born?" He can’t help how his voice cracks as the unfiltered rage pours out of him with each word.
"Yeah, kid." Uncle Sly is angry too. His jaw is still clenched, jaw harsh in the moonlight.
"Why did he come back? Why didn't he just stay away?" The first touch of his hand against his shoulder has Jake sagging against him.
"I dunno, kid. I wish he had never come back. Your Mama isn't the type to cry. But every time I've heard her cry it has been because of that man." Uncle Sly’s hands are shaking as the fingers on his other hand flex with the pent up aggression still in his system. Jake doesn’t know how to respond, content to sit there for several long moments. They’re safe. He’s safe. Jake’s not sure what he would’ve done if Uncle Sly hadn’t driven up that afternoon.
"Why didn't you ever marry Mama, Uncle Sly? You love her, I know you do. Then you can come home to us more often, can't you?" He’s scared to ask that question. But the little kid in him, the young boy who’d wished for a dad every Christmas for years before giving up? That kid needs to know.
"I dunno kid. But enough about me.” Uncle Sly sounds scared or worried. “What's eating at you?"
Jake breathes in deep, trying to find the words. "I want to fly, Uncle Sly. Like you do, like Uncle Daniel did." He stares imploringly up into his uncle’s eyes. Jake doesn’t know what he’s searching for, not really. An ally? A sympathetic ear? Support? He doesn’t know. "D-d'you think I can do it?"
"It's dangerous, kid. But yeah. If there was anyone who could do it, it'd be you. You’ve got your mom’s determination and all of her support, too. Just don’t forget that you’ve got people who love you waiting for you, and you’ll be all set." Uncle Slider’s words fill him with purpose. If there is anything, anyone Jake resolves to be like, it’s his Uncle Sly. And if after he graduates and joins the Naval Academy he uses the distance to push his mom and uncle together, well that’s a secret he’ll take to his grave.
A few months later, I remember lying there in bed
I overheard him pop the question and I prayed that she'd say yes
It’s his first Christmas home when things change. Jake had staggered downstairs in the middle of the night for a glass of water and that’s when he saw Uncle Slider drop to one knee and ask his Mama to marry him.
And then, all of a sudden, oh it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing to a family
Looking back, all I can say about all the things he did for me
Is, I hope I'm at least half the dad that he didn't have to be
Mama and Pops are standing proudly in the stands, Pops dressed to the nines in his own Vice-Admiral dress whites the day Jake gets his wings a few years later. Mama’s crying, curled up under Pop’s arm and Jake literally shines with pride when he wraps her in his arms when he runs to meet his family after the ceremony. Jake is soon absorbed in all it means to be an active duty Naval Aviator. Deployment after deployment at first, then Top Gun. He gets first, of course, pumping the plaque in the air in his pop’s direction. It feels good, seeing his name under his dad’s twenty years later. Some time between Top Gun the first and second times, Jake lives up to his callsign and rakes in his first air to air kill.
That’s when things start to feel truly surreal. The medals are all fine and good, almost familiar in a sense. It’s the blood on his hands that Jake can’t shake. His reputation precedes him nowadays. Everybody gathers around to cheer on the only active duty Naval Aviator to get an air-to-air. But it tortures him. When he can’t sleep at night, he calls his dad. Sitting on the floor in his pajamas Jake pours his heart out to the only person he trusts to steer him on his way. It’s not the first heart to heart he’s had with his dad in the middle of the night. Nor is it the last.
During the special detachment he wishes he could have his parents near. Even though the three weeks are rife with tension and pain, both. Attending Iceman, the legendary Iceman’s funeral, hurts. Jake hates it. He hates it even more when he sees his dad standing there in dress whites next to Mav and the others in the class of ‘86. The most recent heart to heart happens sitting in the kitchen of the house Ron and Rebecca Kerner had rented before their only child jetted off on the most perilous mission of his career.
“You can do it, kid.” Pop’s voice sounds tired, old and very scared. “You’re a Seresin, kid. But more importantly, you’re a Kerner. You are coming home. Whether you get selected or not, doesn’t matter. There are always things you can do to improve. But the important thing is that you’re coming home.”
“We love you, kid. Remember that. Remember that your Uncle Daniel is watching over you and you’ll fly like you were born to.”
Those are the words Jake carries with him the entire long slog away from home. He isn’t chosen, and he thinks he knows why. But when he’s sitting in his jet, Dagger Spare, standing by, his heart is in his throat. He’s seen the pictures. He knows Mav was in his dad’s Top Gun class. Mav’s a living legend. There is no way he goes down like this. He gets on comms over and over again. Begging and pleading to be allowed to help, to provide cover. Each rejection feels like a stab in the back. Jake may not like Rooster much, if at all, but that’s his wingman. He has to at least try. It’s what his dad would do. What his Uncle Daniel did.
So when Rooster’s ESAT goes off again, and moving at supersonic speeds, Jake is launching - against orders, and without help. He’s off the carrier deck before Admiral Simpson can even finish barking his orders for Jake to stay put, a desperate plea to save Rooster and Mav pouring off his tongue before he can even think. It’s days later, when the carrier pulls into the docks that Jake finally breathes. He’s home. He can see Pops looming over the crowd and is running for them before he can even think, before he can even catalog the surprised exclamations of his squadron as he books it. Jake feels like a kid again, swept up in his mom’s arms, feeling like an amalgam of four and twelve and eighteen all over again, too old and at the same time too young to ever be away from his Mama’s arms.
She’s shaking, crying tears against the shoulder of his crisp khakis, tears of joy, of relief, tears thanking every power that be, that her baby came home. When Jake pulls away, keeping his Mom close, the other aviators are looking at him in shock. He introduces his mom, first, kissing the crown of her head as she smiles blearily at the assembled crew.
“And this is my pop, Admiral Kerner.” Jake’s grinning, open and wide, a little shit-eating but more joyful as he takes in the others’ faces.
“Hey, kid.” Jake grins fondly at his old man, hugging the older man tight.
“Baby Goose. Mav.” Pop’s looking right at Mav and Rooster. Mav’s grinning openly at Pops, but Rooster is dumbfounded.
“Close your mouth, Roo.” Jake can’t help his shit-eating grin. “You’re not the only legacy in these parts.”
Before Jake can take it any further Mama’s on him, checking on his hands, and fawning over him. Jake can’t even pretend to be embarrassed. He’s missed this. Partway through the thorough examination his mom is putting him through, Jake turns to look at his dad and Mav. He can’t help but feel thankful. Of all the men he could have ended up emulating in his life, he’s glad it was Ron Kerner.
And looking back, all I can say about all the things he did for me
Is, I hope I'm at least half the dad that he didn't have to be
Yeah, I hope I'm at least half the dad that he didn't have to be
Because he didn't have to be
You know he didn't have to be
New semiserious DP rewrite idea:
we keep the jokes people make about Sam & Danny obviously being in love with each other. But make it a plot twist where they genuinely don't feel that way about each other and it's starting to really get annoying but Sam gradually gets a crush on Tucker and she ignores it at first because it's the "he's so annoying 😡" <(angry blushing) kinda crush.
Meanwhile Tucker's bought into the school gossip of Danny and Sam "secretly" having feelings for each other and trying to be a good wingman while having a crush on Sam.
And then Danny eventually finding out about both of their crushes and is like: "playing at being the wingman for my wingmen; as the universe intended" 😌✨
But it's chalk full of shenanigans because Sam's trying really hard to deny it she Tucker is trying his best to be a good bro(tm)
Hilarious teen brand miscommunication.
