2023 in Mittens Fic

It's once again time for the annual accounting of things I have written! I think this year's total fic count, at 4, is my lowest ever, but I still managed more words than my two lowest years (peak pandemic, i loathe you still).

So I guess my main writing goal for 2024, since I know I will never surpass my 2015 totals, is to just do better than I did in 2023. Here's to more fic!

I managed a Pinefest fic, a fic I started for DCBB but didn't finish by the draft deadline and posted on my own, an annual destielversary fic, and an annual holiday fic. I think that's the bare minimum of what I try to aim for in a year, so even if I'm personally disappointed I didn't get anything else written in addition to that bare minimum, I'm glad I was at least able to hit that goal. Across this year's four posted fics, there's a total of 110,875 words.

Also, again slightly cheating, but since I've mentioned it for the past two years, I'm still making the @spngeorg podcast! In case the millions of words of meta I've written over the years aren't enough, and you want to hear me yell out loud about the show, you can start from the beginning on Spotify or wherever you enjoy podcasts! Or if that sounds daunting, since I just uploaded Episode 138, 7.12 Time After Time, which makes the backlog a lot to catch up on honestly, you're also welcome to just jump in now. Everyone please come yell with me! I swear, if you do start from the beginning, that I get dramatically better at this whole thing as we go on... at least, I think I have. If nothing else, episodes are far more manageably shorter now that I've developed a system. Only took 2 1/2 years, but here we are... :'D

With that business out of the way, let's break down those numbers! Presented in the order they posted:

Dear Western Red Cedar #2409 (63,433 words rated M) Written for @deancaspinefest with gorgeous art by @alexiescherryslurpy, and inspired by this tumblr post that had been plaguing my imagination for several years. It's a two person love triangle with Forest Ranger and secret bestselling author Dean and small town librarian Cas. Heck I want to go reread it just thinking about it now... this is a happy place fic for me.

one working part (40,051 words, rated E) I started this for DCBB, but failed to make the draft deadline, then finished it before posting began anyway... another canon finale fix-it fic, but this one is heavily It's A Wonderful Life flavored and based on a conversation I had with @greywrenn last year. This story picks up at the beginning of 15.19, and then slowly veers more and more from canon, running alongside canon and making rude hand gestures at canon along the way, because they all deserved to have nicer things than canon gave them.

all the time in the world (1,289 words, rated T) This is my annual Destielversary story, short and sweet. It's set immediately after the events of One Working Part, but you don't have to have read that to enjoy this one. Just know Cas is back with Dean, and they've got the rest of their lives stretched out in front of them.

Christmas, Present (6,102 words, rated T) My annual holiday fluff fic, this time set in an AU, since most of my past holiday fic has been canon universe. A Dean/Cas college AU, with Matchmaker Charlie who just wants her friends to be happy already!

And that's my year in fic (unless I manage to post something else in the next 33 hours or so, and lol no that ain't happening...)! As per usual, I've already written more than half of this year's word total for the 2024 Pinefest, which will post in March... or april... heck when is my posting date even... it's coming soon anyway! But it's all written! :'D

Once again, I've still got so many more stories I want to write. Even the To Be Written list has grown again. My idea list long ago surpassed SABLE status, and yet now there's even more on it...

It's five pages, and two thousand words longer than it was last year. this just gets worse every year :'D

But that means I'll never run out of things to write, and that's always something to celebrate!

Well, today is World Mental Health Day, which means it's also the ninth anniversary of my suicide attempt, which means I'm going to do a post that has become, in a way, routine over the past couple of years.

In 2021, I happened to publish my DCBB fic, On Life and Living, the day before the anniversary of my attempt. In that story, Cas has gone through a similar experience to what I went through, but the story is set five years after his attempt. It's not about the attempt: it's about what happens afterwards.

What a lot of people don't tell you will be really difficult after a traumatic event is continuing to live your life. You have an entire life left, and you have no idea what you're supposed to do with it.

Here's my answer, nine years on: whatever you want.

I always feel a bit weird this time of year as I remember and reflect, and for the past week, the primary thought pattern I've been having is "I'm doing _____ right now...what the fuck!" If you dropped me from nine years ago into my life, she would be completely shocked. I just graduated with my bachelor's, and I'm a first-year PhD student now. I moved fifteen hours away from home. I like Star Trek. I have my very own cat. I lived in another country for six months. I wrote an entire honors thesis about assisted suicide and didn't flinch once during my defense when I had to say the word "suicide" dozens of times. Now I'm researching aging and end of life healthcare. I get to get old!

All of that to say--

If you are struggling, you are not alone. And you deserve to find out what happens next in your story. Chances are, it's not what you're expecting. And I'm not saying the road will be easy, but it'll be worth it. You are worthy of the journey and the good things that will come out of sticking around.

HI DOE 🧡🧡🧡🧡 THIS WAS THE BABY JACK WIDOW ARC FIC!!! EXCERPT FROM BEFORE HERE. Originally planned to write for DCBB 2021 but grad school was a BITCH

Jack does like a speedrun of his life, kinda like Amara? So we still get the Adult Jack we know and love but he goes through the baby, toddler, kid etc

It goes back and forth between Dean pov during widow arc and Cas pov when he returns. Dean struggles with Everything, Cas’ death, baby!jack being lucifer’s kid, Sam and Eileen’s budding romance (Eileen doesn’t die in this fic bc fuck that), Mary’s return and mothering Jack which he didn’t have. Cas comes back and sees his family has a whole new dynamic that he doesn’t quite fit into and Dean is acting So Weird around him and he just is struggling a lot

But the title came from the song Rainbow Connection which FUN FACT: CAME OUT IN 1979 so in my head, by the time Dean was 4, it would be on VCR and Mary would play it for him all the time. When Cas and Kelly are in the cottage, Kelly records Cas singing this song on her phone for fun and Dean finds it later and well. Emotions . The whole song is about being hopeful and faith which seems to be a recurring theme in all my fics lmaooooo

October 15, 2021: I hit “Post” on my first long fic: The Rescue, a finale fix-it I wrote for the 2021 DCBB 💚💙

October 15, 2023: I have the absolute honor of meeting the one and only @zybynarx in person ❤️️

Zyb is a reader who became a dear friend, and when I say it was an honor to meet her I’m not exaggerating, because she is an extraordinary person.

Zyb didn’t just read The Rescue—she took her time with the story, and left me long, thoughtful comments on every single chapter. As Dean made his way through the Empty, and Sam and Jack traveled across the post-apocalyptic Earth, she shared her own journey with me. It was nothing short of an astounding gift—especially because it was very strange and even a little difficult for me to share the fic with others after an intense and solitary four-month writing period.

Although it’s been almost two years since she left her final comment, nothing will ever change how special the experience of her readership was for me as an author.

And then Zyb and I became friends! And this year the stars aligned quite suddenly, and we had the opportunity to meet in person.

It was so wonderful to be able to hug her and spend time with her! She and her sister and I palled around London, and every time I think back on the day it brings a smile to my face 😊

I feel so lucky just to know Zyb. She’s interesting and fun, and one of the nicest people I’ve ever met—just so kind and lovely. She creates wonderful art and is such a positive, warm presence in her fandoms. She’s incredibly giving. The day we met up, she told me she was surprised when I started replying to her comments. That’s just the kind of person she is—she was writing, enthusiastically, without any expectation of anything in return.

October 15th will always be special to me for two reasons, now—for the story that’s close to my heart, and the amazing friend I got to meet because of it ❤️️

2022 in Mittens Fic

It’s time again for the annual accounting of things I wrote this year! I’m pleased that while still a disappointingly low total for me, I still beat my total word count from 2021, so progress is being made, which I’ll always gladly take! Honestly anything is better than that 2020 total at this point lolol! I long since abandoned my goal of ever surpassing the 250k i posted in 2015, but that’s okay! I still wrote a decent bit!

I managed a Pinefest fic, a DCRB fic, AND a DCBB fic this year, which is the first time I’ve ever managed all three, so go me I guess? And maybe I enjoy working to deadlines more than I ever assumed before? Or maybe I would’ve written even more if I hadn’t been pushing at deadlines (and letting myself slack off, even if rest is important and beneficial to writer brain, when I was far ahead of schedule...). But I’m overall pretty pleased with this year’s works.

I tied last year’s fic total, with six, but beat last year’s word count with 117,486, so go me! Not even counting the ~63k fic i’m working on for pinefest this year...even if it’s already written it’s not posting until February. Love rolling over a big fic into the new year every year like this. it feels weirdly like cheating somehow, yet I do it every year :’D

Also slightly cheating, but since I mentioned it last year, I still haven’t missed a week of my eternal rewatch podcast, @spngeorg which is still going strong! Uploading episode 91, 5.09 The Real Ghostbusters tonight! If my millions of words of written meta aren’t enough for you, you can now hear me being grumpy about this show out loud! Mr. Fix It (54,383 words, rated M) written for the Pinefest. It started with a photo of the shopping center sign that Mel sent me several years back, and the instruction “this is a writing prompt.” Amazingly, it was a great writing prompt! and a great art prompt, thanks to @lotrspnfangirl! Dean runs a repair shop called Mr. Fix It with Charlie, and Cas runs the bar at the other end of the strip mall, Steve’s. There’s shady real estate dealings, secret identities, and found family taking care of each other through it all.

lectio in equis (13,016 words, rated T) my first ever DCRB, and I screamed delightedly when I claimed @scarlettmichkat ’s artwork! Actually still kinda lowkey screaming about it. I LOVE this artwork. Like, wanna frame it and hang it in my living room love. Canon case fic, sort of, as Dean and Cas get to play cowboy for a day looking for a lost MoL chapter storage facility out in the New Mexico desert. Plus, Jesse and Cesar being the best retired hunters.

Baby X-File (2,698 words, rated T) Written for the final GISH hunt, a crossover scene between SPN and the X Files, canon-adjacent to both, to a prompt from my team captain who isn’t on tumblr... thank you Sammy!

honey wine  (764 words, rated T) annual deancasversary fic! They go to the rennfest, and medieval hilarity and fluff ensues

Heart Shaped Box  (43,504 words, rated M) my DCBB this year, canon case fic wherein Dean and Cas are the case. beautifully illustrated by @marvfortytwo​ and a cathartic walk through a series of memories. I mostly wanted to revisit . Set within days of Dean rescuing Cas from the Empty, because that’s exactly what happened in canon as we all know (I SAID, AS WE ALL KNOW).

The Ghost of Christmas Present(s) (3,121 words, rated T) annual holiday fic, Dean and Cas attempt holiday shopping together. hilarity and shmoop ensue.

And that’s my year in fic. Like I said at the top, I’ve already got more than half this total written to post in 2023, so it looks like I’m still not slowing down. Since I posted my To Be Written file’s stats last year, I figured I should do the same again...

lol... a year later, two pages and 1400 more words added... i swear at this rate i will never finish writing it all, which I find weirdly comforting.
