~Capricorn Season~

Capricorn’s traits tend to be very clear-cut - dependable, pragmatic, ambitious, collected, etc. I’d like to explore some of their most commonly discussed traits to understand this cold, rocky sign. Sometimes called boring, greedy, or materialistic, Capricorn explores themes of power, success, failure, maturity/growth, tradition, and ambition. Earth represents the senses and body, but remember a body has a soul. Capricorn being the cardinal, action-taking form of earth they represent a special contrast and connection to the physical world and spirituality.

Control/Controlling: One of Capricorn’s most challenging characteristics is being controlling and/or having themes of control and authority follow them throughout life. Moon in Capricorn is associated with strict parents, Mars in Capricorn shines the brightest when they are disciplined and strategic. Capricorn understands control in many ways, from learning how to have self-restraint to trying to control others. There are pros and cons to this, on one hand Capricorn can be a natural manager/leader, being able to utilize others’ skills as resources and recognizes their differences or potential. Capricorn stays organized, is a planner, and knows how to keep others in line or is good at teaching others how to behave. Hard Working/Ambitious: Capricorn is reliable, practical, faithful, and steady. They have amazing consistency in their personal and professional life. Capricorn while sometimes called materialistic or known for being all about status, is not always obsessed with fame or fortune. Capricorn’s great ambition can be towards marriage, family, the arts, or science. Their connection to hard work may come from a strong sense of integrity or responsibility. Capricorn’s association to “hard work” may also be connected to themes of bad luck, hard luck, trials, and challenges that are thrown their way in life - making them “work hard”. From an archetypical character standpoint, this is what can make Capricorn so relatable. They know better than anyone the roughness of life and struggles of being human. They have good instinct towards self-preservation which makes them a survivor but in many cases this can also fuel their ambition. A fear of failure or trying to meet someone else’s expectations may also drive their ambition. Their ambition can also come from a desire for purpose.

Seriousness/Responsibility: Capricorn can actually be surprisingly witty, sarcastic, maybe even crude at times despite their reputation for class and good manners. But even with a good sense of humor they are ultimately a more somber, stoic, cold, or at least cool-headed person. When looking at Capricorn in places that talk about family and the home, Capricorn is connected with responsibility or burdens being place on them at a young age. Sun in Capricorn or a Capricorn Rising tend to have a lot of personal accountability, they were taught or finds strength or ease in good boundaries, taking care of the self, and always taking themselves or their life seriously. Capricorn is the person that finds themselves making the hard calls and choices, integrity is important to them but their negative or “dark” side uses morals or honor to hide behind selfishness, they can be instinctive with providing and protecting, and they may cling to rules or traditions that keep people, society, an environment, or the self running smoothly. Capricorn tends to be portrayed in a harsh light, but even with their seriousness they can be loving and gentle.

Rough Backstory

Max was born on a chilly December morning in Detroit, Michigan. He was the youngest of 3 brothers, and their working class status meant he tended to receive hand-me-downs a lot and depended a lot on his brother’s interests. His mother was a nurse and his father was a construction worker.

When Max was very young, his father got into a car accident and passed away from his injuries in the hospital. He was too young to remember much about his father at the time, but he did know his mother worked to the bone to provide for him and his brothers.

While he was an excitable kid, he was always the quietest of his brothers. He loved reading, generally fantasy and sci-fi books and always had the idea of writing his own stuff even from a young age. It didn’t take long for him to get involved in fandom in his teenage years, and he wrote for some time in online spaces. He also befriended some kids who he played d&d campaigns with for a good bit.

The brothers inherited their father’s music taste; classic rock and metal was the soundtrack to Max’s childhood and teenage years. He quickly became passionate about music and enjoyed playing drums the most. He ended up joining a metal band as well as a drummer.

He also got pretty good at taking apart cars and bikes, although he would nurture this talent more later on in life.

Max was 19 years old on the night when his life changed forever. He was travelling on a road-trip to go to a metal show with his friends and then girlfriend, having the time of his life. That night it was a full moon. He ended up separated from his friends, but he didn’t mind. He liked to stargaze. But then alone in the wilderness, he was attacked. All he remembered was it was huge and covered in fur, but he managed to escape with only a bite on his shoulder. He was rushed to a local hospital who assumed it was maybe a coyote or wolf, be he swore it was more than just a normal animal. Despite this, he tried his best to continue on as normal, both for himself and to not worry his friends and girlfriend. They insisted it was nothing, so he felt pressured to do so.

However Max started to experience changes he couldn’t explain. No matter how he tried to ignore it, it kept creeping up on him. Particularly the physical changes he was getting, he felt his sense of smell and hearing especially become very heightened.

The first transformation Max had he thought he just had a hangover. His memories were so fuzzy, he wasn’t sure why he was (he assumed he was) getting blackout drunk but it was the only explanation he could think of. The disappearances from last night on the news didn’t connect to him, surely they couldn’t be related anyway? He kept on ignoring the strange feelings he was getting as well.

Eventually this caught up to him and his friends and girlfriend discovered he was a werewolf who had been behind the killings. They struggled to fight him in his lycanthrope transformation and eventually defeated him, leaving him for dead. They believed they killed and buried him, but he was actually still alive. He woke up confused and very disoriented, only remembering some time afterwards what had actually happened to him. But by then it was too late.

For maybe a year and a half he spent in a limbo, terrified of himself and of his transformations. Every full moon he would have to find a place to chain himself up to prevent himself from getting out of control again. His previous skills in fixing up cars and motorcycles became useful and he got a lot better at it, using them to get himself around. He had a hard time holding down a job or really sustaining any sort of stable lifestyle.

This was until he met Jack Silver, an older lycanthrope. The older man sort of took Max under his wing and taught him not to be so afraid anymore. It was the fear that made it worse, instead he had to accept it. Once he learned to do that, Max began to heal again. At some point he started working as a mechanic in Montana and has kept it up for a few years. He’s pretty good at it, and the income allowed him to settle down in a small trailer and support himself.

It’s been difficult for Max to drag himself out of the dark place he’d been in, but he’s been working toward essentially restarting his life. Of course, despite this he is still a lycanthrope at the end of the day. He’s still got blood on his hands. And Max and found himself becoming far more comfortable with that fact. Accepting it. So now and again there are times when certain people still go missing on the news…

Due to his Lycanthropy he’s gained a few… quirks even in human form. For one thing the very heightened sense of smell, and to a lesser extent hearing. Next is the extra body hair, which only grows back if he tries to get rid of it. His nails get long/sharp quickly if he doesn’t stay on top of them. He has sharp little canines too.

Max always loved dogs, but now he sort of has an innate connection with them. It’s the same with wolves too, although there aren’t many about in the wild anymore. He’s found himself becoming quite passionate about wildlife conservation now as he’s learned this. It helps that he lives closer to nature now.

He absolutely was/is a part of fandom and writes fanfics of his own. Mostly Star Wars because Luke Skywalker is like a self-insert for him lmao (blonde hair, blue eyes?)

Max now has his own book on the go, although it’s more of a collection of manuscripts so far. He has a lot of other things to occupy his mind, but he definitely still has his times where he’s obsessed with his writing and can be seen at his laptop focusing hard.

He’s lived in the city for most of his life as a child and teenager, but he actually prefers being close to nature now. He likes being able to see the stars better with less light pollution, and it’s just a lot safer for everyone with his werewolf transformations and all that.

Speaking of, he can control his werewolf form and transformations more now, and doesn’t suffer from memory issues anymore. Now he can actually transform and go back to being human at will, but the full moon still forces him to do so regardless. It can still be difficult to control his wild impulses at times though. That’s when he goes into the forest and just lets loose. It is always a pain the next day of course.

Max’s ‘victims’ are typically not good people, and generally men. It’s sort of been hard to admit to himself that there’s a certain hunger he has as a Werewolf that only killing can satisfy, so he chooses those that would probably be better off dead in his eyes.

He still hasn’t dared to contact his family or friends from his ‘past life’ so it’s an uncomfortable subject.

Max can play a bit of guitar too but he’s better at the drums by far.

His current vehicle is a motorcycle he picked up and fixed himself. He’s pretty proud of it! It’s definitely his baby lmao.

I literally heard Bark At The Moon and based his whole character concept off of that LMAO

Sorry, this isn’t Chapter 7 yet, but a status update and I will NOT abandon this don’t worry

Hey hello, Pulsar here. No worries, this fic not going on hiatus, I just felt bad that there’s radio silence and no new chapter update yet. Also, I had no idea how to reach many of my readers in any other way because my username until a few weeks ago didn’t match my handle anywhere else, but I’ll be linking to my social media at the end of this message.

I can assure you though, I will never abandon this project. My therapist pointed out to me that writing this helps me a lot with my own mental health and recovery, so basically, I must write this as if my life depends on it. /hj And honestly, I noticed that as well after he pointed it out, and recovery is my number one priority in life anyway, so. Hope that’s reassuring enough for you guys that this fic will be finished in full, including all the additional stories, even if it takes 5 years or longer than that. I am one of those people who stick to the same main interest/fandom for a decade.

Anyway, let’s get to the actual status update:

I absolutely underestimated how much work it takes to finish the script, originally I wanted to continue writing when the script for Arc 1 is finished but hahaha that’s unfortunately not how that’s going to work out and I hate having to make people wait for ages (I am not that patient myself), but I wanted to be transparent about the current writing process 😊

Chapter 7 will come out still this month (June 2023), and I am very sure that I can guarantee that. But I recently discovered that I misinterpreted some aspects of MGR itself while watching the Japanese dub out of curiosity, and I am not satisfied anymore with the 2nd version of my script as I already said when I published Chapter 6, which the first 4 chapters were based on. Hence, I will have to edit (almost) all of them, but thankfully it’s really minor changes and additions as well as some formatting, and none of these changes affects the story so far. But if you want to, you can read them again from the beginning once Chapter 7 goes online. I will delete this announcement then and move some of the info here to the author comment section at the end of Chapter 7. With the addition of the prequel I Come With Knives, Sam got an entire backstory now that did not exist in the 2nd version of the script and it affects the story very positively. It makes it a lot more complex, a lot more consistent and a lot more enjoyable for me to write and (hopefully) also a lot more enjoyable for you guys to read. The downside is, that with the 3rd version of the script, all the additional stories also came and the ‘lore’ of Sing to Me became very fucking massive – I am not joking when I say this is nearly as complex as the Solid series – and that makes the development of the script a little more ‘difficult’. I am not a perfectionist, but my brain is only satisfied when things make sense. I have 29 script files at this point and they will become even more (but at least it’s very organised). Not that I cannot handle it, but at this point I have a small development team who help me with research and discussing ideas, giving me feedback etc. I am just a tiny bit insane about this project but in the best way possible (One of my mutuals even joked that I am a fusion of Hideo Kojima and Rohan Kishibe when it comes to being an author lmao). Honestly, another reason I decided to rework my script is also the fact that it focused too much on Raiden and too little on Sam in the first and second versions. And I think there’s enough focus on Raiden already everywhere else (not that that’s a bad thing), but Sam deserves as much attention as Raiden does – and during the 3rd script development I was sometimes scared that it would now be imbalanced in the other direction, where the focus lies too much on Sam lol. But thankfully that didn’t happen, it’s pretty 50-50. Also, I am sure that even 75 chapters won’t come close to how long this fic will be, like, at this point I believe 100-125 chapters is more realistic but who the fuck knows. I know this is insane. I am enjoying every bit of it <3

Long story short, the two paragraphs above explain why I couldn’t get back to my insane writing speed from January in which I legit wrote 5 chapters in a single month yet. But hopefully, I might get that speed back as soon as I finished the preparations that need to be done for me to continue. However, I’ll also go back to vocational school sometime around August and I’ll have to see how I manage my studies and writing together. Also, dragonfly1212 asked me a while ago that due to the amount of research that I am doing for this story if I would share it eventually, and he’s got a point. My plan is to probably make a tumblr side blog where I will share all the lore over time, as well as reference sheets, character information, inspiration, etc. Drawings I commissioned as well as ‘fanart’, playlists, and fic updates. With the amount of detail and complexity this fic project has, a ‘wiki’ certainly would help I guess lol. Since it’s unrealistic for me to finish the entire Arc 1 script as fast as I’d like to, I will do this in smaller steps instead. As for now, I have nearly finished the fine-tuned scripts for Chapter 7 until Chapter 13, which will finalise the first smaller arc of Arc 1 :D Chapter 13 is probably going to be my next favourite one to write after Chapters 5 and 6, but the fine-tuned script for it is already 8 pages long and it doesn’t make sense to split it up because it would kill the tension if I were to do that. I hope that it will NOT be extremely long, but I am afraid I will have to ‘assault’ you guys with a chapter that’s going to be over 10k words long. Oh well, please don’t hate me. With Chapter 13 this fic will also officially move its rating from Mature to Explicit. If you’re somebody who does not like to read sexually explicit scenes though, I already decided that chapters with such scenes, first of all, will not solely consist of that alone, and secondly, I will also give a marking/note in the top author comment above such chapters where it starts and where it ends, so you can CTRL/Cmd + F and skip over those. I am not sure yet how, but I might use symbols for that as well, so it’s easier to skip, especially for those of you who prefer to read on mobile devices (I am one of those people myself). Also, it’s unlikely that there will be a lot of such scenes in this story anyway, at least in proportion to the length. I care a little bit more about the plot and the drama hahaha.

Community Discord Y/N? Additionally, I’ve been asked now by 3 different people if there’s a discord server about this fic. I didn’t think people would be so curious or interested in my creative work that people would ask if there’s a server lmao but honestly? If there’s enough interest, then I might make one – and please give me feedback if you’d be interested in joining such a community. In the case I might make a discord server though, it would not be exclusively about Samuraiden, Metal Gear or any ship or fandom in particular, and not just Sing to Me, although the main focus would still be on this project. I thought, if anything, it would be a small creative exchange between artists and authors or just people who enjoy reading this story and want to talk to me about it or others as well. This server then would also have an additional corner for you to share your own creative work, be that art, writing, or any other form of artistic expression, and it doesn’t have to be fandom-specific or fanwork at all, it can be original as well. I thought that I may also use such a server to help and support other authors and artists, and maybe give feedback on other people’s stuff when I have the time and energy to do so. Additionally, I could use that server to give updates on the progress of the fic overall, which is a lot better than inappropriately using AO3 like I am doing it right now. This will be the only time I will make an announcement like this anyway.

what's your hc on the nations' (im)mortality? is prussia a weird exception that proves the rule for you? is the concept of life and death not applicable to the nations?

its applicable! theyre born and then they die eventually. they just live a bit longer. u can think ab it like, oh wowww hes 500 years old, but thats still a very small slice of how long the earth has been turning...

im strongly in the camp of "they spring out of the dirt" for how theyre born, but a lot of people prefer the "they were human once" angle—which is fair, because there was one guy that explicitly was human once, became a nation, then gave up that status to age normally again. they called him out as an abnormality, but i think thats a nice way to end their lives. if its "they dissolve into dust instantly" vs "they age and die normally" i prefer the latter...

the immortality stuff is VERY VERY fun! i have a lot of thoughts on how the aphws universe works. i think their lives are dependent mostly on a group identity, somewhat on a land claim, and 0% on a political entity. i also think the Way They Work changed a lot with the modern age. like how in canon the fantasy elements faded as the world modernized, the Way They Work became a lot more grounded with that. theyre less fantastic than they used to be.

So my friend is claiming that House of the Dragon is basically "fanfiction" to Fire and Blood. Clearly, the characters had to be aged up and other plot devices had to pushed off to the side, but I don't exactly feel as my friend does so I thought I would ask your opinion. Is HotD a "fanfiction" or is it a somewhat more realistic plot given Fire and Blood is a historical retelling and is surrounded by historical controversies, biases, roundabout rumors, etc.? Love reading your posts!

Oh gosh. I do find this kind of funny considering GRRM is not a fan of fanfiction.

I would say that there are a couple presuppositions there. Firstly, I don't think fanfiction is inherently a "lesser" form of art, nor is it a particularly modern phenomenon. The consideration of derivative art as technically inferior is decidedly modern.

Secondly, is the show "canon?" Well, that depends on your definition of canon. Some things play far less well in film as a media than they do in books, so some changes are always going to happen in adaptations.

I generally take some ideas from the show--like what happened between Rhaenyra, Daemon, and Criston--as canon, but I also don't think anyone has to. The first work--in this case the book--gets higher canon status, at least in my perspective, so the book is the ultimate authority. Given the book's controversies and biases though, there's room for personal interpretation, and in some aspects I think the show did well exploring these and fleshing them out. See again, the Rhaenyra-Daemon-Criston sex sequence. I also like Alicent's queerness; it really fits her character.

In other aspects like, say, Mysaria, or Daemon throttling Rhaenyra, or Aemond's "whoops" moment, the show did not do so well. Where it contradicts information from the books, I side with the book in terms of "canon."

Tl;dr my opinion is that the show and book have separate canons that inform and are informed by one another, but when they contradict, the book has the authority. Whether you'd call the shows deviations fanfiction or just adaptation differences is up to you; I just call it adaptation... with flaws. Lol.

If Euripides's Helen was told from Menelaus POV, it would be a perfect horror story: you go through 10 years of war's horrors to get back your honor and your wife (who isn't really your wife). Did he realized something was wrong with her? Something he couldn't exactly point out. 10 years change people, and sure it changed Menelaus, so it should be normal, right? He has her back, and now what's only missing for him to be fully himself, like he was before saling to Troy, is to get back to Sparta to partake in his role as king, as husband, as father of a small child that is now a girl soon to be leaving home to become a wife. And yet, he isn't able to go home, exiled in a neverending voyage, each year it passes the farther away he is from his Identity of King Menelaus - who now doesn't even have a physical war to anchor himself to.

And when he and his men and his wife (did he get closer to her? Did he doubt?) shipwreck in an unfamiliar place, and yet goes by himself to seek for help personally, instead of sending someone to do the job, not only is he further humilliated by someone of lessen status, who mocks him, who emphasizes how out of place he is - much-wandering, but not complicated nor cunning, not a king, not a hero of epic in a war, but a shipwrecked man, alone in front of a hostile place, _then_ the woman appears. She, who most resembles his wife, who speaks with Helen's voice and claims to be her. And all the horrors he went through weight much heavier. And the fact that the woman he thought his uncanny unchanging wife* might not even be who he thought is too terrible to admit.

Nb1 - in my head the eidolon represents a perfect Helen who doesn't age, which is justified by the men in the ship(s) by the virtue of being Zeus's daughter. How the phantom behaved and the corporeal aspect of it/her also fascinates me. Did M. and the phantom sleep together? Did he realized something was amiss (depending on your interpretation of Menelaus and the way he interacts with his patriarcal status as king-husband etc ofc)

Nb2 - i'm working on the epiparodos and the first part of the first episode as my final degree project. I started it bc HELEN, her agency in the play and the different iterations she has in pre-euripidean literature and her role as a mythical character that adapts to the author in ways other characters do not, but god Menelaus is such a fool and sad and perfect counterparts for her that *eyes emoji*

Okay so this whole fandom parent/fandom elders/queer elders thing is blowing up on twitter and I think we need to address the issue properly.

Fandom elders is a bs term

First of all 25 to 40 year olds are not fandom elders or queer elders. A huge chunk of the older generation didnt even know they were queer way into their 30s with a LOT of people trying to cling to the norm of heterosexuality of the time. I'm serious when I say quite a few queer elders have had less time openly being queer on the internet than a lot of the current gen on twt.

Fandom/queer intergenerational conversations are infact important

Why? Because the youth cant wait for all the older generations to die out to resolve conflict. Literally everyone is at each other's throats slinging insults like a hippo flinging shit to mark its territory. The older generation need to stop hating on the younger for "having it easier" and the younger needs to stop minimising what the older have gone through for the world to progress as much as it has.

But ALSO because older people in the fandom can and will often keep you aware of the risks. They can help you recognize red flags from actual predators in the fandom because they themselves have had to keep an eye out for them.

A predator preying on queer minors is not always gonna advertise their status as an adult

Listen, while a lot or adult predators will try to lure you in with promises of safety and care, most predators disguise their online presence as that of another minor. You need to learn how to pick up on the red flags. Its VERY important to learn that. No minor/adult should be trusted 100% on the internet.

Learn to maintain distances on your own

Talking to fandom adults online is a great idea because you have anonymity, you can share your struggles and they can help guide you through them but do not ever think they are your best friend or parental figure. If you are so naive that you actively allow yourself to be lured into a false sense of security because some rando on the internet was being maternal to you then you should not be on twt or such. As decent fandom adults our responsibility is to maintain our distance from fandom minors. Mark our nsfw content and not engage with minors while also keeping an eye out for shady adults or red flag accounts. However you are on the internet, sharing your personal details with some rando on the internet is not a good idea. Ever.

Here are some red flags to keep an eye out for

If a fandom adult insistently tries to run with the fandom parent/older sibling narrative and has extremist views on shipping culture, promotes hate mobbing, actively drops names, links or content of the "nasty" accounts to directly or indirectly get their minor followers to attack said account, thereby exposing the minors to said content.

People claiming to be MAPs or defending MAPs. Do keep in mind however that MAP is also an abbreviation for a job so just be careful in case you decide to report. 😭

Adults who follow back or interact with minor followers or do not mark nsfw content in spaces where they allow minors.

Fandom adults who try to isolate you from other fandom adults and anyone else. Often predators will isolate people to make them dependent on them. To do this they will often present themselves as being some all knowing authority figure/protector against the big bad nasties, whatever the nasties may be depending on which side they are on.

Inconsistency in the posts of the person in question, be it age, life story, etc.

Any kind ot coercion to participate in discussions of nsfw content relating to characters or real people while being fully aware that they are talking to a minor.

If they have access to your photos any comment on the way you look.

Listen to your gut, if you feel even vaguely uncomfortable block and move on. If some adult gets mad at minors blocking them they are shady as shit.

I know people have a whole hate boner for pro shippers because often predators can hide amongst pro shippers but keep in mind most pro shippers are older people and will often tell people to seperate fiction from reality. Meanwhile a majority of anti shippers are minors and quite a few big anti accounts have been revealed to be predatory as they openly expose their followers made mostly of minors to nsfw content and cut them off from a) making informed decisions on their own by skewing narratives through the use of trigger words and b) making them actively fear any interaction with the rest of the fandom. Trust no one. No matter which side.

Lastly, please, dont be scared of having a light conversation or discussion with fandom adults, but do be wary. Do not share private info, do not share your personal issues that can be exploited. The moment someone online seems to gaslight you or guilt trip you or coerce you into something you dont want to talk about hit the block button. It doesnt matter what age is mentioned in their profile or how old they claim to be. Never exchange your contact number.

How I would’ve structured DA:I’s story (spoiler: Rewrite nearly all of it)

The more I think on it, the more that I realize that DA:I is the least of the three Dragon Age games to date. Weakest integration of your choice of PC, weakesssssst combat by far holy shit. Only thing it has going for it is graphics and, depending on how you feel, companions. But the biggest sin is that the story is WEAK AF.

Here is how I would have restructured DA:I’s story:

The Main Conflict

Mages vs. Templars. As it SHOULD’VE BEEN. And none of this “Oh it’s an evil Tevinter mage trying to invade the South and open up the Fade with this elf orb he found”. Throw that out.

And with this, it would be allowed for your PC to actually interact and be commented on by the world they’re thrust in, I think, because you can choose whether to come from a mage background or a non-mage background, and your race will also play a part in how you approach the issue of magic regulation and mages. It would also invite the writers to consider the intersection of race and magic status. A Dalish mage vs. a City Elf mage vs. a Human Commoner mage vs. a Human noble mage vs. a Qunari et al. The different cultural perceptions of magic, how Dalish elves would view this rebellion, how humans would, how Qunari, how even Dwarves would see this, should and would be explored or allowed to be expressed by the PC and other NPCs, and especially more so by the Inner Circle. Whether you’re a mage or a non-mage could give you brownie points for whatever group you’re trying to woo to your side to defeat the...

The Actual Villain(s)

What would’ve been more compelling was if they had sold the Well-Intentioned Extremists angle again, and do it right this time, by making the first set of villains (yes, the first set) a loose organization of apostate mages that snuck into the Conclave and wanted to unlock the power of the Orb that they’d come into possession of because they were fed the information that it was some godly weapon. Why at the Conclave? Because they didn’t believe in compromising or bargaining with the Enemy, and even more, they believed that any mages that were trying to parley with the Templars were selling out the future of mages. You could even throw in some zaniness like the de-facto leader of this organization holding the belief that mages are superior to non-mages, that they’re a type of being that should be worshipped instead of hated, that they should rule over society instead of non-mages. The main theme would be “Hurt people will hurt people. Pain and anger drive a cause, but too much will poison it and hurt those who you’re trying to help the most.”

You could introduce the invasion of the Tevinter mages within this kerfuffle, too, something like America funding “freedom fighters” in foreign countries, sending some troops to oversee the training of these more radical apostates, levying them supplies and support, etc. What Tevinter would get out of it is a destabilized South, for one. The mages could promise Tevinter that once the mages got to rule Orlais and Fereldan, they’d give Tevinter some great political and economic concessions. Mage class solidarity.

The SECOND set of villains would be a group of Templars that would take advantage of this terrorist attack and the onslaught of atrocities committed by this extremist group of mages as reason to employ equally extreme measures by demanding that mages be exterminated wholesale or put under even stricter control than even how the Qun deals with them. “Mages are savage creatures, not even people.” The hope is that by incensing the common people with enough hate toward mages, these Templars could then be granted enough leeway and public support to just *incidentally* commit genocide in broad daylight against mages. It would be a whole slew of Merediths trying to shout down the well-meaning templars that do exist in the organization, or the ones that have sympathies for how the mages are treated but don’t have the power to override the authority of their commanders or the chantry. The main theme would be “In a corrupt organization, the ‘good ones’ will eventually be corrupted or silenced”.

Ultimately you will have to fight both, because both cannot be reasoned with, but you will be given time to gather up forces and resources and allies depending on how you’re doing the politics and the quests. That’s right, we’re doing Fallout: New Vegas factions, baby.

So you have two extremes, and two potential allies that might be willing to betray their extremist counterparts if you play your cards right. It’s still Mages vs. Templars, but it’ll be more nuanced depending on how well you gain the trust from the Mages and Templars. You can also choose to be an utter bastard and neutralize the party you do not favor because if you do not get in their good graces, they WILL join their Extremist variant in the final bout and you will be forced to exterminate them (similar to how if you don’t have a good relationship with say, Fenris, and you decide to defend the mages, he’ll stand against you). So the options would look like this:

Inquisition + Moderate Mages vs Extremist Mages || Extremist Templars + Moderate Templars

Inquisition + Moderate Mages vs Extremist Mages || Extremist Templars (Moderate Templars Neutralized)

Inquisition + Moderate Templars vs. Extremist Mages + Moderate Mages || Extremist Templars.

Inquisition + Moderate Templars vs. Extremist Mages (Moderate Mages Neutralized) || Extremist Templars.

Inquisition + Moderate Mages + Moderate Templars vs. Extremist Mages + Extremist Templars

You Can Keep the Veil Tearing Being an Issue

Amidst all of this, the tearing of the Veil is obviously a problem you’ll need to solve, as it is threatening to unravel the world. Both the extremist mages and the extremist templars want your power for different reasons.

As for Solas. Well, he really, really didn’t plan that giving the extremist mages the Orb “accidentally on purpose” would kick off a bloody and violent civil war, and the chaos and suffering he witnesses would be justification enough for him to wipe the slate clean and destroy the present world to resurrect a new one where none of this bullshit is even a *thing*.

So yeah, the basics of the Orb and the Veil would be intact, but the antagonists and how the story plays out would be much more focused on the story that people actually WANT to see, which is the Mages v. Templars.

Personal Preferences: Dalish Gods = Still Just People

This is a personal preference because I am in fact 150% unspiritual and believe all religions without question are made up and have no bearing on reality (I respect your faith, unless you’re a Scientologist or a freak that thinks it’s ok to, idk, shun people, but I think that faith and religion provide archaic explanations for phenomena and unnecessary rules for human behavior) , but I would retain the “Dalish gods are actually strong mages” because it IS conducive to Solas’s point that time distorts memory and history, and that this phenomenon, while inevitable, is poisonous to Truth. But on the flipside...Heritage is history with its heart still beating. You can sitll make your argument that it doesn’t matter that the Evanuris were just mages, you as a Dalish in the present day worship a form of them that cannot hurt anyone. It isn’t difficult to shift perspective and view the “gods” as metaphors and personifications for certain values and attributes. Religions and practices can change and adjust without fundamentally changing the culture. The Maker is also fake and doesn’t exist, so no one is getting any special treatment in the religion department.

Again, I don’t want to come off as a neoliberal atheist or whatever, but I find Solas’s running motif of pointing out how history is just a story with different perspectives that change and transforms over time the farther away one gets from the primary time period to be far more fascinating than “Oh, gods exist”. I’m trained in history and the way that information is filtered and sieved throughout the ages into something near incomprehensible isn’t often explored in video games at all.

Extra Thoughts

My suggestions might provide a sounder story to allow for your PC to actually interact and be commented on by the world they’re thrust in, I think, because you can choose whether to come from a mage background or a non-mage background, and your race will also play a part in how you approach the issue of magic regulation and mages. People like to bring up how Dragon Age borrows heavily from different ideas and cultures and conflicts, so here, this story borrows from pretty much every modern militant civil conflict. Though none of the conflicts have ever had magic be the cause for persecution..

As for the Templars...they need to be given something to justify their existence and position. You could probably wedge Cassandra into the formula. She does work for the Chantry in a non-Templar capacity so she isn’t a Templar herself, but her level-headedness, unbreakable ethics, strong sense of duty, and her integrity could be used somehow to root out the corruption and abuse within the Templar organization, to reform it and inaugurate greater checks on their power and the personalities that become members. Vivienne could help with this as well, since she knows what a good life in a mage circle is like.

So you would have two different camps that offer two hopefully different offers. You can side with the Templars and believe that with time and effort and a whole lot of nose to the grindstone, you can reconstruct the system into a better one for everyone involved. Or you can abolish the system and rely only on mages to be self-sufficient in keeping their magic and their proteges in check.

It wouldn’t be a “Oh the writers don’t want to push for actual change so they’ll make the victims do a Bad Thing so that you’ll lose sympathy for them”. If they wrote it well, you would still feel sympathy for these mages and their cause. but not their approach. Not such a hole-filled and self-sabotaging approach, that is. People are complex, and anger and fear will drive people over the edge. People fighting for their lives will commit atrocities and things considered egregious offenses in so-called “peace time”. Paying evil unto evil and all that. That would be what the story is about, the tesselations and stacking of grievances and continuous reactions to antagonism, leading to this mess that can’t be unwound so easily.

“’The ladies of the Restoration’, as the pioneering historian Alice Clark concluded in 1919, ‘were but shadows of the vigorous personalities of their grandmothers.’ The deterioration in their status was said to be mainly the result of economic change: home production had allegedly declined by the seventeenth century, leading to the exclusion of the wife from the farmyard, the shop, and the workshop. At the same time, the increase in wealth permitted elite and middle-class women to withdraw from all connection with business. This developmental chronology, influenced by the work of Friedrich Engels, continued to echo in historical narratives well into the 1980s.

Once its economic edifice was questioned and the ‘decline and fall’ model was generally challenged, the historiographical pendulum of women’s history swung away from explanations of long-term change. The working of the ‘parish state’ of East Hoathly invites us to revisit old debates about the social and economic experiences of eighteenth-century women, while reflecting on gender and rank, authority, dependency, and power. One place where Peggy Turner was not to be found was the parish vestry. Following the age-old tradition, wives generally did not participate in local assemblies, nor carried parish office.

The handful of known exceptions demonstrate the rule. The absence of women such as Peggy Turner from the ‘organs of the parish’ appears all the more conspicuous in light of their occasional inclusion among the lesser parish servants: whether as gaolers, sextons, nurses, etc. The appointment of women to certain positions was allowed as long as public care was not a consideration. The increasingly consolidated system of local governance offered women some employment opportunities, but no more than sporadic access to the formal structures of authority and power. For a wife such as Peggy Turner, exclusion from the site of authority also meant limited access to the circuits of male sociability. This was all the more obvious since the parish’s vestry meetings were typically held in the public house, and were accompanied by considerable consumption of food and drink in male company. Neither Peggy Turner nor any of her fellow matrons ever set foot in these meetings.

Thomas Turner often noted specifically that his wife stayed and dined at home. The food eaten by the men on these occasions was typically superior to everyday domestic cooking and included choice joints of meat and rich pudding, whereas the daily menu at home was normally based on lesser cuts and leftovers. Indeed, the availability of lavish food and plentiful drink at the expense of the parish no doubt helped to raise attendance at the parish vestry.

Conversely, Turner was quick to note when any of his neighbours hastened to leave the vestry meeting once the business was over, so as not to stay and drink at his own expense. Both governance and sociability required time. It was not unusual for meetings to last well into the evening. On 19 April 1756, for example, when Turner was elected as an overseer of the poor, he had to return home briefly, but once he finished his business he immediately came back and continued to drink with the men. When summer arrived, the men played and watched cricket.

When the May vestry meeting was due, one farmer suggested holding it at the ‘cricketing’ in the hope that ‘if any more of the parish were there’, they could come to a resolution concerning one pauper’s affairs. At numerous other times the parish men simply dropped in at the public house, had a drink, smoked a pipe, and conducted their affairs, or went travelling together on parish matters and on personal and business affairs. The networks of male sociability, tied with the operation of the poor law, were also typified by friction; this, too, was largely beyond Peggy Turner’s domain.

Turner often complained about his quarrelsome and parsimonious neighbours, especially the wealthy tenant farmers, who did all they could to reduce the parish rates, and minimise expenditure on the poor, while at the same time driving wages down by employing migrants and ‘certificate men’ rather than local labourers. The most powerful among them, Mr French, regularly dominated the vestry meetings ‘with Hoarse grating sound of his huge big Oaths’ and interfered with the work of the parish officer, who was obliged to consult with his powerful neighbour on many matters, and often bit his tongue so as not to antagonise him.

Although this particular domineering farmer, as Turner noted, could eventually be brought to good humour with the help of ‘2 or 3 drams of Old English Gin’, the vestry men’s regular consumption of alcohol also increased friction. One time when the butcher, the chandler, the blacksmith, the shoemaker, and several farmers assembled at the public house for a vestry meeting regarding ‘the making [of] a poor book’, ‘some or most of them’ were ‘a little in Liquor’ to the point they ‘could not agree in some of there arguments’.

The parish meeting at the cricket game, mentioned above, was in fact strategically called to use the social gathering for smoothing over differences among the men. While Peggy Turner did not partake in any such events, she was busy nurturing parallel social networks. Since her recent arrival in the parish as a young bride, this farmer’s daughter had taken care to assist the social integration of her husband and herself. She befriended the wife of the active vestryman, the carpenter Mr John Vine Jr, and developed a close reciprocal relation with the wives of the butcher and the chandler.

She also cultivated the acquaintance of a select group of local women distinctly above her station, such as Mrs Hannah Atkins, the well-to-do widow of the deceased steward of the local aristocratic estate, and the wife and daughters of the wealthy farmer Mr French. Occasionally she went to visit them and drank tea, and occasionally they called on her. Children, relations, and household guests habitually participated in such visits. Peggy became popular among her neighbours and increasingly paid and received visits on her own.

On 6 January 1756, for example, when Turner came home, he found two of the leading farmers and their wives in his house, drinking tea. When a female neighbour died, it was Peggy who attended the funeral. Occasionally she went to a fair. Generally, her social interactions took place indoors, and in the houses of her equals or betters, rather than in the arenas of popular culture. The only public events she regularly attended were the two Sunday services at the parish church

If the working of the parish vestry was lubricated by alcohol, then, Peggy Turner’s social sphere was typified by tea. This once expensive luxury had become by the middle of the eighteenth century a polite amenity and was drunk by the middling women of East Hoathly and in mixed company. Generally, Peggy Turner’s social interaction was characterised by contemporary patterns of consumption and sociability. As a respectable wife, she cultivated her appearance and was – as her husband in retrospect recorded – ‘remarkably Sweet & Cleanly’.

A dressmaker fitted her with a gown, altered two others, and the shoemaker provided pumps at the considerable cost of 3s 9d. When her husband sat down after a busy day, she enjoyed reading to him aloud sections from the contemporary best-seller Clarissa, or even from a political magazine. Generally, she shared the reading of contemporary genres such as newspapers, sermons, novels, and plays together with her husband, with the maid, and often with any guests who happened to drop in. Together with the steward’s widow, she invested in a lottery ticket.

She and her husband partook in the current culture of polite curiosity and went to the sea, to tour a castle, to visit a spa town, as well as to see friends and relations, and to hear a popular preacher. Together with a group of acquaintances, they once went to the nearby aristocratic estate to see turtles. In the winter months the couple engaged in rounds of visits in the houses of local tradesmen and well-to-do farmers, where they had lavish meals and plenty of drink. Card games were invariably played. Occasionally polite engagement lapsed to revelling.

When the visits ended, Peggy appropriately tipped the maid, Thomas the serving boy. Companionable home visits were at the centre of the middling sphere of the parish, which the Turners and their neighbours cultivated. This also stimulated trade: often clients and workers participated. Yet although Peggy engaged in many activities in female company, the female circles and mixed middling circle were often indistinguishable, which meant that while she had little share in her husband’s sphere of governance, he habitually played a role in her social world and the two regularly spent time in company together.

The result was social integration, which was undoubtedly important for both Peggy and Thomas Turner. Being young, and recently arrived migrants, their position in the parish was far from secure. Thomas had a share of a copyhold farm in Kent and was a customary tenant in another Sussex parish, but it was his mother who had a life interest in the property and his siblings who actually lived in it. Being the son of a second marriage, his inheritance was disadvantaged, while his role as an elder brother had left him responsible for several relations.

About the time he undertook his parish office, he was striving to maximise his income by serving as a school teacher, personal tutor, occasional scrivener, and even undertaker. Indeed, in East Hoathly, he was no more than a copyholder’s tenant, and the house and shop, hired for £8 per annum, were below the settlement rental threshold; only with the rental of a warehouse did the total rise above the required level. Both Turner and his wife were educated and well connected, and in possession of some funds; still, parish office must have been for them, too, a step towards integration and belonging.

In this respect, Peggy’s contribution was invaluable. The female and mixed social circles she cultivated served to complement the male sphere of governance, as well as to counterbalance it, and to contain its tensions and harmonise disputes while at the same time cementing neighbourliness and assisting trade. The most important task that Mrs Turner undertook, however, and that filled most of her waking hours, was work.

The depiction of the middling eighteenth-century wife as idle and frivolous, advocated by pioneering historians such as Clark and indeed based on negative contemporary stereotypes, was far removed from the realities of Peggy Turner’s life. To begin with, the daily meals at home required a great deal of preparation and frugal ingenuity, to present economic yet respectable dishes. Peggy Turner laboured in the kitchen, together with her maid.

There was an endless stream of clients, tradespeople, neighbours, relations, and friends who stopped in the house and shop and always had to be served. It was crucial to keep an orderly and hospitable household to establish credit. After Peggy recovered from a severe illness and the death of her only son she undertook to foster her husband’s illegitimate nephew, a task for which the couple received pay, as well as the younger son of a half-sibling.

The boys attended a small village school and were looked after at home. Although, unlike her husband, Peggy (like all the women in her family) travelled little outside the parish and hardly ever went beyond it unaccompanied, she readily went on errands in East Hoathly: delivering messages and goods and handling many payments. When a public reception was to be held in the local aristocratic mansion, she, her husband, and the maid went back and forth five times in one day, bringing supplies.

Goods were also made at home. Together with her husband, maid, and sister she laboured ‘a making of Boulster & pillow Ticks & Bed Bottom’ for the chandler. She and a local wife worked together quilting. Evenings were spent preparing tobacco for sale: one time she and Thomas worked through 20 parcels of tobacco, another through 70, 80, or 120, and even 240 with a total weight of 55lbs. When her husband was commissioned to serve as an undertaker, it was she who worked the night before tying funeral ‘favours’.

When an audit was to be held, it was she who prepared the goods. The shop was tended by Thomas, Peggy, the maid, and occasionally Turner’s brother, as the need arose, and was always open to do business. On 23 March 1756, for instance, when Turner returned home, he found a fellow vestryman and officer, together with his wife and sister ‘in the shop a Buying of Goods & who went in and Stayed ab[ou]t 2 Hours’.”

More akin to that of a mop than anything else, he does occasionally pin it all out of his eyes, though this is rarer than you might think. His hair is very soft and easy to comb through. His eyes are a soft, pale lilac color. Gentle though very guarded, revealing very little. He has a lean and narrow body type featuring some toning, standing at an odd 5'7". His skin is a pale but neutral tone, unblemished aside from a scar in his left side in the shape of blackwyrm’s jaws, many rows of teeth having bore into his skin, and some old knicks, scrapes, and cuts from less than ideal transformation cycles. There are patches of iridescent scales in various places on his body. He has a tattoo of a spacial summoning circle split between both of his hands in enchanted white ink, allowing him to summon forth a devastating meteor shower. He wears a black and purple modified hakama and a dramatic high-collared sleeveless shirt, forgoing the theatrics of a robe or cape, as well as a shortcloak made of starlight.

25. Personality. Furie is bit of a difficult nut to crack, being a reserved and quiet individual with no straightforward or truly personable inclinations. He presents as unreadable as physically possible, hiding himself beneath layer upon layer of carefully interwoven threads of polite neutrality, cool professionalism, and placidity. There’s a quiet determination about him, a hidden and unwavering steadfastness that anchors him to life and heroic pursuits, but just as this, he’s equally as regretful and deems himself unworthy of the atonement he seeks. He blames himself for the accident of his fiance’s death (though this is starting to direct itself toward Mausza) and is ever and constantly searching for a means of redeeming himself. On top of this, he doesn’t feel he has anything of value to say beyond his divination, harboring much resentment toward Mausza, the clergy, and Her worshippers. All anyone wants from him is his service, not to know what he thinks, feels, likes, or dislikes, so he gives it to them and keeps silent about all else (though this is in part due to the trauma of Yule’s death), putting as much distance as he can between himself and others. Generally speaking, he’s understanding and careful, thoughtful and wise, but he’s not above violence or sneaky tricks, lying, manipulation, or other such things to further his own ends - he will always try the non-violent route, though because of Mausza’s favoritism towards him, he’s given special permissions to use force if necessary during his search for the Sanguine Star.

He was born into the Night family, to a sorcerer and a were-wyrm with dominant genes. As both, he was born possessing a natural affinity for gravitic and necrotic schools of magic, inheriting the spacial abilities of a blackwyrm and the Night’s close relationship with necromancy. From birth, he had many doors open for him, but he chose a religious path early on in an effort to break away from the dark and dour nature of his family (especially his father), though this really only replaced one abusive group of people with another slightly more palatably abusive one.

But it was there he met his beloved, Yule, a harpy of heron variety who showed him the beauties of hope and faith, pure and kind no matter the hardships she faced. He fell in love with her good-natured charm, adoring her so completely, he proposed. She accepted, of course. Tragically, however, tensions were running high as ever between the Myrrdinians, Wildlings, roving Red Hand vampires from Strigane, civil unrest between beastfolk and non-nightfolk, which coalesced into an all-out skirmish in several nightfolk cities throughout the Myrrdin. At the time, Furie and Yule were vacationing in Frea when a hoard of blackwyrms were unleashed into the town center. Buildings were destroyed, hundreds of people were killed or injured, and he and Yule were separated amid the chaos. He was swept away, caught in a blackwyrm’s jaws and nearly chewed in half; She was overpowered and killed, shredded to pieces. Surviving this without her left a hole inside him that could never be filled.

Once he recovered from the attack, he dedicated himself to his work as a diviner of Mausza, earning the Starstitcher’s Favor. Insodoing, he was given a special task - informed through communion with her that a Sanguine Star had fallen and must be retrieved before 'bad actors' and 'violent retributors' could get their hands on it, reduce the world as they knew it to ash and sow endless death. He was shown Loux and Sortia’s faces, along with the likes of Elluvius Black, Lilith Morningstar, Cedric & Claire Montgomery, Deadeye, and many others - promised the removal of his pain and grief, the serenity and grace to keep living, the courage and drive to continue. Because of his direct communion with Mausza, he was dubbed Euphony, her voice, among the clergy. This all put a whole new set of pressures and expectations on his shoulders, thrusting him into oracle status and all that comes with it. His position turned into something of a curse, testing his relationship with Mausza as well as his resolve.

He is used as little more than a service, rather than sought out for genuine inquiries - taken for granted among his apparently graceless and faithless fellows, time and energy abused as both a man and a clerical leader. At this time, however, he has not wavered in his work despite his now shaky beliefs. He searches tirelessly for the star in an effort to please Mausza and achieve his peace, even though it’s costing him much more than he ever thought it would.
