The obsession that some Liberals have with "Unity" and "Compromise" as inherently desirable ends unto themselves, rather than potentially applicable means, excellently demonstrates the foolishness of their idealist worldview. Like they believe that conflict happens because some people just don't like each other, that they were somehow infected with bad ideas that drive them to fight, and so you can solve all conflict by getting them to just start liking each other by believing good ideas of peace and love instead. The idea that some groups are opposed because of very real material reasons, that can't be banished with a change in attitude, is simply not something they consider. And so they value the mere act of resolving a conflict over the conditions that said resolution create.
While certain forms of unity and compromise are very useful to advancing a cause or movement, others are a waste of effort and resources and some lead to active disruption and damage. You need to consider the actual situation that you occupy, and the actual terms that this unity will be on, before you start advocating it. Like there's this quote I've seen attributed to the oral traditions of the Haitian people (although I've had trouble finding a source for this so take this supposed origin skeptically) that I think is worth keeping in mind: The unity of the chicken and the roach happens in the belly of the chicken
I literally woke up in the middle of the night like God will dark rise is so fucking screwed. The line that’s like. “Everyone wanted to kill the Dark King.” What’s the part where he looks at Violet helplessly, haunted, almost pleading for mercy? But of course he reveals nothing of substance to anyone. Elizabeth is too young to understand but the reader knows what “Her relationship with that boy was…unnatural” can mean. Tying him to bedposts? Failing to strangle him? What else? Never not even once seeing beyond a mythological identity Will himself didn’t know he had? What did he think was the reason? That he was just intrinsically hateful? Of course he says nothing. Of course Violet can’t trust him- he’s given her nothing as painfully real as what she’s given him. So he gives her the sword hoping at least he can die at the hands of someone he loved, but even that doesn’t work out - she gives the sword to a Visander still furious at SARCEAN. The pattern continues; no one looks at Will, who vomits when he realizes what’s happened to James, Will who is much of a liar and killer and sneak as Elizabeth accuses but nonetheless wants to be different. Even when he doesn’t remember his own past. There’s no way out for him that doesn’t hurt. Hope this obsession passes soon given the one and a half years of waiting required for book 3
I've only heard about this second-hand but it's insane to me that Hirsch was like "yeah maybe Ford doesn't deserve to get Stan back at the ending" what do you MEAN
So confused where fandom/fic writers got this interpretation that Miles does stupid shit that doesn’t make sense or barely works out in the end or puts his friends in unnecessary danger all the time. Like in both movies the others simply underestimate him and don’t understand what Miles is doing cause he thinks like Miles, not like your everyday Spiderman. He uses his Venom Strike to throw Kingpin in the ITSV movie and literally saves Gwen and Peter because they went into battle less than ready. Then had the entire plan to lure the Spiders in ATSV, yet I keep seeing him written like he doesn’t think or gets his friends in trouble even when he understands the danger. Most of the time his different thinking has helped or led people to fix personal issues.
The first movie alone pretty much sets in stone that the exact opposite of what he wants is others to get hurt by his actions, inactions or the actions of others and trying to live up to that belief and the expectations it carries. Across the Spider-verse hammers it home with how he constantly tries to save people because that’s what he should do, rather than listen to some theory that is clearly not absolute at best and outright wrong at worst. Every fic has him being the one to cause issues and not fix them when his planning and actions literally helped save Gayatri and her father. (c’mon we know the glitching was the spot)
Yeah, I get making him stubborn or strong willed cause he doesn’t listen all the time but usually it’s for a good and valid reason, if he listened every time he was told not to, guess how many of our beloved characters would be dead?
Max: Okay, you guys, there’s Rich. Watch. Just watch this
Richie: *walking past*
Max: See? Still pretending he’s not interested. Oh! He’s coming over. Just pretend like we don’t know him. We’ve forgotten who he is!
Richie: Hey guys!
Steph: Hey Richie!
Jason: Hello!
Max: …
Steph: Hey, Richie. You know Max, our friend? He’s nice. He’s not bad to look at, right?
Max: Thanks, Steph
Richie: Well, of course
Steph: Do you want to go out on a date with him? You got my blessing!
Max: Steph!
Richie: Sure. Is Sunday okay?
Steph: Sunday’s perfect. He can’t wait
Richie: On the date, I will be able to talk to him directly, right?
Steph: Yeah
Richie: All right, see you Sunday, Max *leaves*
Max: Okay. What the hell was that? You know what? Don’t answer me
Max, giggling: I have a date with Richie!
