‘Sunfyre and the pedophile have the strongest dragon-rider bond in Targaryen history’ when Daenerys, the MOTHER OF DRAGONS, literally BIRTHED IN THE FLAMES AND BREASTFEEDS her three dragons, HOTD truly created the most insane and delusional people I’ve ever seen.
The misogyny never really banked or went away, though.

i still dont understand how uther managed to make dragonlords and dragons near-extinct. he was a powerful king, but he was still a human. how did he manage to not only kill nearly all dragons but imprison the last dragon? his chains were enchanted too, weren't they?
maybe a few dragonloard were caught and used to kill a few dragons but an entire race? i find it hard to believe considering the damage kilgarrah did after being released. after the first few dragons & dragonlords were killed, wouldn't the rest easily be able to band together?
like it would be laughably easy for even just 2 dragons and dragonlords to do irreparable damage to camelot. considering what one dragon was able to do. and with no magic on camelots side, not that normal magic even works against a dragon.
i like to think there are more dragons out there and dragonlords who managed to escape or just did not want to be a part of the war. they moved to an island, maybe or some magically protected land that no one knew about. its a far-fetched concept but not entirely impossible.
another possibility is that aithusa survived as an egg all these years, so there could be more eggs that dragonlords managed to save at the time of the purge and hid them away. and they hid them in a way that only dragonlords would be able to find those eggs.
it's just such an interesting concept to me. like there had to be more books to be found about dragonlords. maybe merlin finds one in the secret library compartment? their knowledge can't all be lost. or maybe the druids managed to save something that they can give to merlin.

.......does that mean that the cave where Balinor was living used to be his dragon's nest?
oh...oh shit it might be
these nests where dragons and dragonlords lived were probably considered as safe and secluded places that could only be found by them. it is very likely that Balinor's cave was the one he shared with Kilgharrah.
do you think that the dragon's old treasures were still there when Balinor met Merlin? or did the treasures give Balinor grief every time he saw them, so he removed them from the cave? maybe he buried those treasures near the cave like one buries a casket? or did Balinor keep them as a reminder of his guilt or as a reminder of what he lost and why he should remember?
were these treasures still there after Kilgharrah found the cave when Balinor was long gone? did Kilgharrah still hold some love for the treasures that have laid in the cave abandoned and untouched for over 20 years?
did Merlin get time to actually explore his father's cave? did he find the treasures left by both Balinor and his dragon? would he have recognized what treasures were what? had Merlin snuck off one night when he and arthur were hunting close to the cave to look inside, to find glimpses or ghosts of who his father was?

Yi Ti alliance with Valyria
          by Shella Longclaw
“As Emperor Chai Duq married a Valyrian noblewoman with a dragon, his granddaughter Princess Priti Chai married a Valyrian nobleman without a dragon.”
Valyria made two alliances forged in marriage. One was with the Kingdom of Sarnor, and the other was with Yi Ti. I should say more precisely that Valyria made several little marriage alliances with Sarnor. Since the Kingdom of Sarnor was composed of city-states, Valyria gave low-ranking daughters to the various kings. Yi Ti was a united kingdom under one emperor, so the yellow emperor Chai Zhu had the power to negotiate for a dragonlord’s daughter. Valyria needed the aid of Yi Tish navy for the third and fourth Ghiscari wars, so the bargain was stroke.
This marriage was the first of its kind. Never before had a dragonlord or dragonlady been wedded to someone who wasn’t Valyrian. It had been rumored that most Valyrian didn’t believe the union between Prince Chai Duq and Lady Valaena Belaerys would spire any dragonriders offspring. They were wrong. All three royal children were dragonriders. Nearly all of Dragon Emperor Chai Zi’s children were dragonriders as well. While he wanted a stronger alliance with Valyria, rich House Savyon desired to gain dragons. According to Princess Priti Chai’s letters, Valyrian houses without dragons commonly gave their daughters to dragonlords. Rarely, a dragonlord would give their daughters to such a low-ranking house.
House Savyon gained their dragons, but sadly, Yi Ti never gained a strong alliance with Valyria. The two kingdoms supposedly continued to be on good terms with each other after the alliance ended. It was similar with the Kingdom of Sarnor. Once the war ended, all ties except for trade were broken between the kingdoms. Regardless, of no more marriages into Valyria, Yi Ti maintained their dragons for about two thousand years.
A novice maester had inquired of an archmaester about the reason for Valyria never conquering Yi Ti. The archmaester gave the explanation of the far distance between the two kingdoms and the issue of extending the freehold too big, which I agree with. Though I like to believe that most Valyrians wanted to keep their word of being allies and not enemies of both Yi Ti and Sarnor. Many Yi Tish priests believe otherwise. They say the Valyrian feared the strong Blood of the Dragons in Yi Ti and wouldn’t risk losing all their dragons to the golden kingdom. We may not know the precise reason for Valyria not trying to conquer Yi TI. It is known that Yi Ti almost attacked Valyria.
The sixth yellow emperor was reportedly so livid with Valyria over their slavery practice and the death of his sister that he craved war. Only the entire royal court was able to prevent it and keep the peace. Though official reports stated that both sides were on good terms, actual records show that both kingdoms looked down on each other. It’s surprising during the indigo emperor dynasty that Valyria tolerated Yi Tish pirates attacking their ships and didn’t confront the indigo emperors about it. Yi Tish scholars think that the official decree of the pirates not being supported by the empire was the reason. Because of the Doom of Valyria, little is known about this once great kingdom.
Thankfully, Yi Ti does provide more information about this kingdom. I will soon be writing up my translations of old scrolls and books into the Common Tongue. It is my hope that the Citadel will allow my writing to be shared, so with more people involved that we might gain greater understanding.

Sothoryos: Creatures
       by Shella Longclaw
It’s the home of wyverns, which are known to be vicious and considered the smaller cousin of dragons. There is a reason that ancient Valyria stuck to the isles and didn’t venture again onto Sothoryos. Wyverns aren’t the most dangerous creature native to there. They have enemies. The large crocodiles called suchus by the Ghiscari have been seen to devour wyverns. Suchus have also been reported to kill dragons though only medium to small ones. They are said to live in the Green Hell.
The giant snakes, titans (their Valyrian name) can slay any size dragons. Emperor Chai Nui wrote down what happened to the Valyrian colony. He had a terrible argument with the dragonlords on the eve of the battle against the Brindled Men, so he refused to come to the aid of the Valyrians. The two dragonlords flew low to the ground to burn the Brindled Men. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Dapple Men coaxed the titans over. The monsters lunged at the dragon from great heights and coiled around the dragons’ necks. The dragons fell died to the ground. Their riders soon perished with them. When the Valyrians saw their dragons fall, they quickly fled, and they never returned.
I will not waste time discussing the better-known wyverns and basilisks. Instead, we’ll look at the white bats and tattooed lizard. Neither creature is dangerous or violent. The tattooed lizard, called goanna by the Summer Islanders, are simple scavengers that only consumed dead things. The white bats don’t drink a man’s blood. They do drink cattle’s blood and are deadly, since it is believed they spread sicknesses.
It is believed that some wasps and stinging flies are more deadly than basilisks because they easily spread illness. Very few travelers have survived to describe any deadly insect except for the unicorn fly.
As for the giant apes that are bigger than giants themselves, the Yi Tish and the Summer Isles don’t believe they exist. They think instead that they were stone giants (Yi Tish scholars) or large bears (Summer Islander elders).

you know, i think too many people misunderstand the "no man is worth your tears" line. i see it brought up so often in magic reveals as a thing arthur feels guilty about saying, when i really don't think he would. cause in context, that line isn't supposed to be about balinor.
well, it obviously is, on the surface, but arthur doesn't mean it in way that's like "oh you shouldn't cry over some guy's death", not at all. because look at the context of the scene: arthur is about to face the dragon, and he's almost certain that he's going to die. he saw the way merlin cried over balinor's death, and what he means when he says it is that he doesn't want merlin to cry over him. and merlin realizes this! he even says it, "you're certainly not".
and the thing is that this completely recontextualizes the scene. it goes from arthur being well-meaning but unintentionally insensitive to arthur being genuinely caring and concerned about merlin once he's no longer there. which would definitely be in character for arthur, because he very much does become a little more honest about his feelings in life-or-death situations.
like it's genuinely such a sweet moment between them and it's so so overlooked because of circumstances that arthur didn't know about, and it's really unfortunate in my opinion because that scene is honestly one of my all-time favorites
