Here ya go guys! I also have improvement pics from last year! Almost two years in the Tally Hall fandom! Woohoo! My Marvin's CD is gonna hate me even more after all of this

This is from an au created by @bonkdd, but i did rob and andrew's designs bc i never saw his designs for them. i also added a lot of lore and plot stuff because i really liked the concept. in simple terms the tallies are robots that were abandoned by Marvin after he passed away so now they're falling apart n stuff without him to care for them (that's why rob hides his face). Anyways, huge thanks to Bonk for the original idea! They're a great artist, you should go check them out!

Did an embossing peice. It's the Mojo Chessmaster! I tried by best to make it as detailed as possible, and I think I did pretty alright. The neck was probably the worst part to do. Below are close-ups

the head of the guitar was a pain in the ass.

This part was also pretty tricky but it came out okay. the dials at the bottom are raised as much as I could get them to go, so I'm not worried about them. My issue here was the pickups.

I also added Flansburgh's little signature guy but i drew his hair because why not? Anyways this piece took me a good hour or so to finish, I think it'll fetch a good grade (it was for my metal design class).

it's from a tally hall fanfic/au i made back in may after my grandpa passed away. It was a great stress-reliever and I still really like how it turned out. It's about cryptids and monsters and shit. I'll post a summary on a different post because this one was mostly for the drawings. I might post a few installments of it on my ao3. It could be a weekly thing since i usually have time on fridays to write.

Once again, a close-up is available below.

I put literal hours of research on cryptids and of the area (ann harbor, MI) while writing this fic. It was fun though, and it helped me a lot. Feel free to ask me anything about the plot or world-building !

Anyway, what outfit is Frankie wearing in your half normie au? It's kinda hard to tell in some of your art. (They're wearing a tattered red sweater... I think).

Also! What body type did you give the main ghouls? I noticed Frankie has broader shoulders and draculaura is shorter and softer... Sorry if this is strange to ask. I'm just curious.

I didn't draw Frankie's outfit in full ever, but ur right their sweater is like stylistically tattered. And they've got split pants. One leg is a solid black and the other is their signature palid. But each side has a patch of fabric that matches the other leg. And I imagine theyre wearing like chunky black platforms of some-type for their shoes

When it comes to body types I dont really know what the names and what not for all that is? I know some people have got pears and apples, but Idk I wouldnt know how to point that out to you my brain just doesnt see the pattern for those terms. I did though find this an interesting question so I went back over and did sketches over some of the designs I did.

And I thought it'd be fun to expand on why I went with the ideas I did

for the first five I did I didn't really put a ton of thought into it? I really just went with my gut. Frankie and Lagoona actually have pretty similar body types, with more "masculine" frames ie wider shoulders, flat chests, and narrower hips. Plus theyre both long limbed and a bit lanky. Theyre both a play on a square. When you look at square shaped characters you tend to view them as "sturdier" whether that be literally or emotionally. For Frankie that's square shape is fake. They aren't a very sturdy person, they're new to everything and always on the verge of tripping over their own feet but they WANT to be sturdy. Meanwhile Lagoona is a very confident person! She's comfortable in her own scales. I also wanted Lagoona to have more of a "swimmer's" body cuz, ya know. She's a fish.

I don't have much to say on the other three. Draculaura's body type was inspired by my own, but it's not exactly like mine either, I'm not as short as her lol. Clawdeen has a fuller figure as well, but she's a very active person so a lot of that is actually just muscle.

Cleo is the most generic of the group lol.

Spectra was the next character I actively tried to design, and for her I kinda leaned into her canon monster high body type. Primarly cuz I really wannted to make her look like a y2k girl with the lowrise boot cut jeans and little ballet flats. fun fact tho! I also really wanted to lean into her being a more sharped edged person with the only exception being her round face, and this is to accentuate the type of character she is! At least, my version of Spectra is meant to be a bit more antagonistic. She does mean things without fully thinking through the consequences of her actions and how they might affect the people around her. She can be pretty self serving. But that's not to say she is unfriendly or that people don't like her.

and here obviously is my most recent line up lol.

Much like Cleo I honestly did not put much of any thought into Ghoulia's actual body type.Her pose I did somewhat though, I wanted her to slouch a bit and look kind of droopy.

For Venus and Rochelle I had opposing strategies for both characters. For Venus I wanted to make her very sharp edged and punk, Just overall I wanted her monster type and personality to really come across. And i like the idea of her being pretty muscle-y actually ngl. Rochelle I tried to go for a more "pear" shaped body? Which with the pose and clothing choice I feel gets lost a bit. I like the idea of her having a very soft and rounded silhouette to contrast the whole... spikey rock monster thing lol.

Abbey being giant and thick just makes sense to me imo, but also I really wanted to lean into rounder shapes to contrast the first impression she usually gives people. That whole Cold, Stoic, and Mean impression people get from her isn't true, in reality Abbey is quite friendly and sweet once you actually get to know her.

But here is my 2023 art roundup! :D

General retrospectives under the cut per month if anyone is curious 😘

Jan: This was a gift I made for a buddy of mine! It was of his oc that the friend group collectively simped for and cultivated together, as a family. He's a great lad and a starting point for me to use stock textures for the general look of my art

Feb: An older design of my Miraak, but I really still like this piece. It was the starting point of me trying to learn how to draw characters interacting together. While I do think I can improve in some aspects, I still think it holds up really well and looks super cute!

Mar: Ah, gore. This was the beginning of me doing a 'soft' art style. It's of a melting Emperor Belos for the Tales of a Tyrant Zine (I believe the link is still active for access to the pdf? If curious, I should still have it around somewhere. It's pretty sick ngl). I really like this piece, it helped me deal with my imposter's syndrome in the group of Amazing artists as they really liked this piece of mine! And generally I love drawing gore

Apr: This was a commission for someone on tumblr! I used my softer style for this piece and had fun figuring out how to make the light imposing but not loose the main colors and details! Also fun fact - I had a friend pose for me holding a sign so I can get GOOD hand references as google was no help

May: Ah the first full drawing on Krita. This was a test on the art program as Autodesk Sketchbook was no longer working for me on desktop (tho I still use it for my ipad art!). It's of my HOK who I don't talk much about as they're just a Dude. Sorry Jhyth, I should do more with you

Jun: This bitch. Elyden I adore you, you're my favorite oc and one of my longest lasting ones but. . . It took so damn long to get a good design with him that showed his personality and wasn't a pain to draw. I really like his design here, I think he looks wonderful

Jul: A commission done for my Skyrim fanfic's editor actually! She's pretty cool and greatly improved my writing skills! And she paid me to draw a mudcrab in Sovngarde! What more do you want? I love this piece too as I learnt how to do backgrounds in my style that won't kill me in my detailed art style

Aug: Another commission done for a friend of mine! It was based off a doodle I did of his oc as a gift but he paid me to finish it as a full rendered piece! :D I got to draw a tiddy window and an evil throne!!!

Sep: An art collab I did with a friend of mine! Where we split the image in half and drew each other's ocs interacting! It's actually the same dude as the Jan's piece. I both hate loved working on this. His hands gave me so much trouble

Oct: My second favorite oc's revamped design, Lorelei <3 I love her a lot and I really love her design. I think it fits her perfectly and you can tell what she's about immediately by just looking at her. I adore this lady (also fun fact, she's the older sister of Elyden!). This drawing means a lot to me as it was me figuring out that I like drawing character references only in more fun poses in a sense

Nov: Funny thing, I finished that drawing yesterday. But it's a reference of my Rahgot! I chose this as my Nov piece as I feel like it was when I was getting better at character designs. In terms of practicality, function, aesthetics, colors, and visual language

Dec: A commission for an old friend of mine that I knew since...fuck me, I think...6 years? He wanted me to draw an antagonist for his body horror gundom ttrpg campaign! Even though he doesn't draw, his designs fuck so hard and I'm so glad I got to draw one fully <3 I love this piece and I think it was a great send off to the end of this year

I feel like I exploded in improvement this year. My skills and my methods for art became more practical and made my life a bit easier in general in the process (especially in the coloring department). And I cannot wait to see what I'll make for next year :D

Donkey Kong is bringing the HEAT!

This piece was really fun to work on, especially since I've kind-of-sort-of entertained the idea of DK using Mario power-ups, so seeing it happen in an official Nintendo product, when for years they seemed adamant on keeping really Mario-centric stuff out of DKC and vice-versa, made me do a bit of a double take ngl. Aside from stuff like the super leaf in Smash or some "everyone grows huge with a Mega Mushroom" technicality, this is the first actual power-up form for DK, and he looks sick.

I'm pretty sure he shoots fireballs in the movie but I thought it'd be fun if he took that fire and used it for his ground slap, letting him create fire earthquakes! His posing and expression were fun to bring to life as always (even though his eyebrow thing is so hard to draw), and I liked making the background too. Kind of a cross between that sunset level in DKC1 and the general jungle levels in Returns. Works pretty well!

Nico’s Eyes of Heka

With ‘Eyes of Heka’ ability that Nico got from his mom’s mummy ancestry, he can see the flow of magic. It gives him a near 360º field of vision that allows him to perceive the flow of magic, use telescopic vision that can see through solid objects to track a targets through magic, and read the flow of magic within people’s bodies. He can clearly see magic pathway, determine key weak points, and to some degree predict opponents moves by reading the fluctuations of magic/soul in a person’s body. Legends even say that masters of the ability can also see through invisible barriers that connect between dimensions. While an incredibly powerful ability, it can be pretty taxing on a person’s body and mind if overused or if the user isn’t physically fit.

1. A Lilias Drinking Song🍻

I was really pleased with how this came out; I'd had the urge to write an AnS song for a while and had a lot of fun coming up with a tune and some lyrics, imagining a lively inn atmosphere. It was like taking a step into the ans-verse~

2. At The Reins

My first AnS fic, written for obiyukimadness21, 'Almost Kiss' prompt. I feel like I captured the personal atmosphere I wanted to go for here! I am pleased with my descriptions and think I kept the characters true to canon :)

3. Fearless Folly

Obiyukiweek21 submission; although not my best art I really like the idea of these two sauntering into a soiree without a care, arm in arm, commoners united 💪

4. Future Nostalgia Obi

This year I was slightly obsessed with the album Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa and got into it around the same time as I did obiyuki. Hence, the two are linked in my mind, and Future Nostalgia Obi was born! 🙌 Here I drew him in the place of Dua Lipa in the album art and I just really like how it looks. I like his expression and the fabric detail and his pose, and how said pose ends up revealing his major chest scar which feels relevant. It was a drawing I started not meaning for it to be much but then I loved how it turned out! (plus I think Obi fits this kind of diva vibe ngl)

5. Pillow talk part 1.

For obiyukimadness21 - Only One Bed prompt :D had fun with this one and I think that comes across, haha. First time drawing an AnS comic and clearly it's pretty rough but I'm still happy with it! I love comics and the idea of making them, so actually completing one (even if it was just a 'part 1') was a feat in itself and I suppose I'm proud of that. My aim is to make more comics next year, (starting with Pillow Talk part 2 😅) and try to neaten them up, so here's to that!

Honourable mention: Obi and Torou sketches that I was proud of! I liked the head angles and their expressions, imagining who or what they were reacting to :D

so i get if u don’t wanna answer this cuz questions like this can be hard but!! i’ve been trying to learn to draw for the last month or two, and since ur one of my favorite artists on here i was wondering what made you want to start drawing? was it something u always liked or did u get into a little later on? when u first started how did u pick up skills, and did u have any specific things that helped you develop ur style over time? again pls don’t feel like u have to answer any of this or anything, im just curious!!

To be completely honest with you, I think my artist origin story is embarrassing but I'm happy to share :) I'm pretty sure there are photos of like... toddler me drawing on those magnetic drawing board things so art has probably always been something I enjoy haha. But I actually got invested in art when I was 8 and my brother started reading manga, which prompted me to do that too. I fell in love with the art style I saw in fairy tail and for years I was really inspired by it. I'm not sure if the fairy tail influence still shows in my art but my guess is that there's still an anime-sque aspect to the way I draw? But more on that later.

I don't know what your opinion is on tracing - some people say it's cheating, others don't, whatever - but that's how I started. I wasn't really putting much thought into it, because I was 8, but the thing with tracing is that it's a good way to get used to drawing certain proportions. I don't have any photos of the stuff I did when tracing, but if you look up fairy tail panels you'll get an idea of the style I was trying to learn at the time. Then my family found out I was just tracing stuff and made fun of me for it (I'm still salty about that over a decade later lmao) so I graduated to copying :)

I never enjoyed the concept of properly measuring things out to get exact proportions when I was copying panels, which was inconvenient in some ways but was actually a great way to train my eyes for observational drawing! The trick here is to start small and simple before you move on to more complex images. Did I do that? Probably not, but I'm too ambitious for my own good when it comes to art. Here's some stuff I accomplished during that stage! If you scroll all the down to the first posts I made on my instagram account you can find more that are similar to the one on the right

I did try exploring a style of my own, one based on my imagination rather than simply copying images, but ho boy that was a struggle. It also happened around the time I was starting to get interested in digital art (I must've been around 15yo?) so it was just a whole mess. I don't particularly feel like going into the details of everything I was trying at the time because I really don't remember much of it but my best baby steps were the ones where I observed the styles of artists I really liked. Luckily for me, a couple of my faves posted speedpaints and stuff on youtube, some of which I watched religiously, and it pushed me to experiment with some of the techniques they used. It helped me a lot when trying to find brushes and colouring techniques I liked.

In all honesty though, I think the most progress I've made has been in the past year? This feels embarrassing to say but glee gave me a massive rush of inspiration and I started churning out art like the unhinged sleep-deprived gremlin I am and I allowed myself to experiment with a lot of different things. Figuring out what brushes I like to use, a colouring system that works for me (it still changes regularly ngl), pushing myself with more complex backgrounds and dynamic poses, things like that. I'm still always inspired by other artists, some whom I have admired ever since I started drawing and posting fanart (my main inspiration these days is kkumri!! I've been a fan of her art since my fairy tail days lmao and since her art style is heavily influenced by anime, mine still is too). I guess what I'm saying is that experimentation and practice are key, but it also helps to find things you like about other artists' styles and implement them into your own.

You'll notice I haven't talked about anatomy yet. I wanted to write that in a separate section because anatomy has been its own separate, annoying monster for me. Which is entirely my fault, because I didn't really try learning anatomy until I left my copying stage, and by then a lot of habits had already formed. What helped me the most here was observational drawing! Human anatomy is wildly confusing for me, and trying to learn how to draw the entire body was too stressful, so I like identifying something I struggle with and focusing on it for a while. For example, a while back, I started the 100 heads challenge because I was struggling with faces. My goal was to draw 10 faces a day, for 10 days, and even though I gave up halfway through at only 50 heads, it helped a lot. Last summer, I got really frustrated with hands because I was drawing them more often but they never looked right, so for a few days I would just. sit down. and take the time to sketch out some hands based on a wide variety of references. just hand in different positions, from different perspectives. same with feet. When I started drawing more dynamic poses for the sports aus, I practiced figure drawing and just... Focused on the flow of a pose rather than letting myself get bogged down by details. Sometimes I like drawing in monochromatic to focus on where the lighting is coming from and how it affects the positioning and shape of shadows (that's actually how I started the furtana hiking drawing! coloured in greyscale first!).

I still struggle with things like muscles and clothing folds, both of which are things I know I need to practice and haven't gotten around to doing anytime recently, but to practice those I would take the same approach that I did for anatomy stuff. References are so so important and helpful!! They're actually life-savers for me!

This is getting long so I'll just leave it off here with some final thoughts. This is all stuff that has (kinda) worked for me, and it might not work for you. Everyone has different methods of approaching art and it takes a while to figure out what works best for you. That said, I'm always happy to talk more about art if you have more questions! I'm not sure if you're interested in seeing my usual art process and stuff like that but if you are, ask away! Also, last thought - be nice to yourself! I tend to get really impatient and frustrated if things aren't turning out the way I want them to, but art is just one of those things that takes time and practice. Realistically, your art isn't going to look exactly like you want it to, but that doesn't mean you're not making progress <3

:: unpopular opinion - i liked fate; the winx saga ( this is very long and may contain spoilers. )

this is a kinda head dump of my thoughts so feel free to skip over, just wanted to share my thoughts ).

I don’t agree with the whitewashing at all and am angry at them for that. i know that winx was great for showing diversity in the cartoon and people could relate to the different characters because of that diversity. but please do not hate on the actors, they didn’t get a say in that process. I have a theory that flora will actually arrive as she was mentioned so it might be a part of a significant plot point. but yes, i am pissed at them for whitewashing.

I’ve seen a lot of people getting upset because it wasn’t exactly like the cartoons, but the big thing here is that the original was a cartoon aimed at little girls under the age of ten. this new show is aimed for young adults and over. i totally get the frustration with how you were ‘promised’ something, but they had to make the show somewhat more realistic and mature as the same children who watched the cartoon originally are now adults. they probably thought they were appealing to the same audience by making it more mature for their og audience; thus to them they felt they were keeping their promise. i’m also a strong fan of the cartoon, please know i loved the cartoon and still do, yet it would have been impossible to just recreate the cartoon and i’d wager that if they tried to do it so accurately that it would turn out messy. it would be hard to relate to if there was tons of fairy sparkles and a pink castle; they had to make it more realistic and appealing to older audiences. If they did essentially mirror, there would be a whole set of other issues and then where would the creative agency be? why even bother making a live action if it is to be the exact same as the cartoon?

furthermore, they had to make it appealing to all genders, whilst the cartoon, a show from the early 2000's, was quite obviously coded towards young girls. sorry to burst bubbles but the original has very strong issues of gender conformity, sexualisation of characters and body image. in the cartoon, only girls got to be fairies, they were sparkly and they were all thin with slender hourglass figures with very little covering them in their transformation. And all the boys had to be sword fighting heroes wearing muscle tees and be emotionally aloof; thank fuck they began the steps to correct this - not saying its perfect but its progress. i remember watching the cartoon as a child and genuinely being upset because i wasn’t allowed to be a fairy because I was a boy. hopefully if future seasons go ahead, we can see trans and non binary fairies and specialists. And i felt that they didn’t sexualise their characters too much, if at all. i think there were two, maybe three, shirtless scenes but they were fast and brief and didn’t linger and were natural to the plot and their relationship to the characters in the scene (exiting a shower only to be ambushed by your ex and at a party high to suss out a crush) and didn’t really allow for a ‘good look’ which i’m thankful for as they are meant to be 16; unlike other teen drama shows which sexualises it’s characters every chance they get which needs to fucking stop. (we all know the show that commits this crime far too much). i feel like it would have been better if they simply aged up the characters to a college age setting (18+) as their age in the show does not amount to anything plot wise so that would have made me feel more comfortable to watch. in regards to their transformations and why they didn’t happen, i totally understand the frustration and I too would have liked to see some cool ass fairy outfits, but again this is reality. whipping out these minute long transformations, changing their clothes to magical boob tubes and mini skirts would have broken the reality if it happened every chance and then where is the growth ( and having the actresses in these outfits would have opened up another set of conversations regarding sexualistion and body images ). transformations had a big impact as a spectacle element in the cartoon, which makes sense as it was pretty and sparkly and the show was for children; of course it was going to be pretty with fun music and cute poses as it helped children remember who was who. transformation in the live action had a big impact but for the plot and growth of the protagonist and universe. it is set up early on and stated that transformations have been lost, as fairies were not relying on it due to evolution. so when bloom does have that transformative moment, its a powerful thing. she is tapping into something no one else ever could for centuries, she has grown a lot in her power since she wasn’t raised to be a fairy and had issues regarding her family ( also are we that surprised she got intense, fixated and emotional over all this, she’s a fire fairy. she is fucking firey). it also adds a sinister underplot as the boss villain was the one who managed to teach her transformation; so it makes you wonder why and for what purpose? How is bloom going to manipulated? in regards to character, look ngl some of it was shit. it would have been nicer to see them do more stuff together and not be so snooty, but again growth. if the girls all popped in and became instant best friends, where is the room to grow. it made me smile seeing piece by piece they were coming together and learning to trust more and then when the time called for it they were there. as someone who has had to go into a college apartment with a group of people i never met away from home, the trust aint there. it took time and there were rough patches but then it hit a point where we were all close and loved each other, this is natural. one does not become best friends with everyone in a heart beat especially in their unique circumstances. In fact, many of them own up to their issues and apologise which i think is beautiful and probably made them stronger for it. Yes i know they were besties fast in the cartoon, but again this a cartoon. it's spreading happiness and moral lessons to children. Was that same message there? i think so, maybe not as explicitly but why make it obvious? they wanted to take the audience on a journey rather than spoon feed - you aren’t children. Was it a great show? no. Were there things wrong with it? Of course there was. it has far to go and hopefully it will improve and draw a bit more from its source as it could be good to see. But if they take too much then what is the point in making the show to begin with. We have the winx together as friends now so if we get a season two, we will get to see them kick ass and develop as characters which will be great. If anything I have written has upset you I deeply apologise. Please come to me and let’s chat. I’m also up for a friendly chat if you have another opinion regarding the show.

Also dumb question, is it normal to feel self conscious about your characters? I've always wanted to draw them out and show them to the world but not only can i not draw i also feel worried about judgement and other stuff like that, any advice?

I feel like it’s pretty common to feel that, regardless of where your skills sit, or how much you do with OCs. Ngl with the recent stuff I posted, I got into a loop for a month with thoughts like: “why would anyone want to see that stuff I drew? My characters are dumb and my art is flawed”. Forgetting that people follow me for those characters, and for my art, and want to see it even if I think it’s not good enough. I’ve also found that a lot of people who tell me they can’t draw, or that their art isn’t very good? Actually draw pretty decent. Even if you can only draw one pose. One expression. Even if you can only draw stick figures, that’s still accomplishing more than most give themselves credit for, because so many people will quit long before they make a line on paper, and tell themselves they can’t. You will never learn by doing nothing. But you can always learn if you try. It may take years and you may not see progress for a while, but if you keep at it you will get better (it’s why daily drawing challenges exist). And the nice thing about art is that it’s fluid and there is no endpoint—there is no limit to what you can draw, and what you can learn. If you invest the time, if you study, if you draw even when you don’t think the end result is very good. It’s not so much a talent as an accumulation of skill, and the ability to keep pushing past your comfort zones. Which for a time, will make your art look “bad” to you, but only because you’re drawing things unfamiliar to you. But that’s also how you learn, and you do get better at it, and it makes drawing those challenging things easier. And eventually, you’ll be able to draw that thing, and can more on to the next thing.

Art pep talk aside, my general advice is to do what you want. It’s your blog, your account, your work, and at the end of the day the only thing that matters is that you enjoy it. If someone judges you for it, that more speaks to their own issues, not to you. If they can’t deal with a stranger on the internet having fun and creating or rambling about their OCs and headworlds, block them, and keep doing what makes you happy. And if it’s stuff you don’t feel comfy linking yourself to, you can always make alternate accounts, and new pen names. But imo if you want to share and post, you can always try it out, and if it doesn’t do it for you, you can always stop posting and delete stuff. Play around and find what makes you happy, and keep the things that make it fun.

It’s APPRECIATION TIME babey

first on my list to the surprise of literally no one would be @emordnilap-fr my partner in crime. I’ve always admired her linework, the weighting and anatomy and just everything about it is fantastic. I still need to post my part of the collab we did so I can rave about how much fun it was to use her linework! It’s just so -clenches fist- very nice

@hungrytundras is another one of course. Llan’s got such a unique style with the way they apply texture it’s amazing. Plus, basically every piece of art he puts out has some sort of tie in with lore. The world building is amazing! The actual written lore itself is always so cool, ngl there’s plenty of ideas there I’ve worked into my own lore.

@nimrook-fr this is like your 5th ping for this but whatever. Echoing what everyone else has said, LOVE IT. 10/10. Very very nice. The lines and colour and shading is always so good, there’s a really nice atmosphere to every piece of art. The whole smoke thing which is seen so often is done really well too! It’s just always such pleasing art to look at (plus nim is a very nice and amazing person and is always a joy to talk to!)

@196794 I LOVE THIS ART A LOT. Their anthros are always great, and the way their characters interact is so dynamic and natural, I always enjoy seeing a new post. Plus the way they draw like... eyes and faces and the LIL WHISKERS is so pleasing and nice, I love it.

@frxemriss deserves a lot of appreciation for his stories! I used to go through and binge read a bunch of them hjksdhf they’re always really fun to read. Not just that, but can we get some appreciation for the lesser-discussed art that is bio coding? Cus xem? You’re amazing. I’ve coded a few bios myself and your talent at it is always inspiring.

@rexcaliburr-fr in a similar vein, rex makes super nice bios! I’m already using one of hers that she made specifically for this dragon and it’s so nice and clean and beautiful. She also does really nice art, and I love seeing it! It’s always so... fun looking. Like I look at it and I know those characters are having a funky time.

@brahkest-fr similar to nim, another big name in the FR community and for a GOOD REASON. I remember when they first started to make their appearance with a few pieces of art and they just suddenly blew up. The expressions, poses and general dynamics are always amazing, plus the very recognizable style is super nice!

@fr-ari a great artist and a great person! Their art always has this professional illustration vibe to it, like I’d see it in a book. Whiiich makes sense considering they do professional stuff hkjsdhf. The poses are always really awesome and fluid and defy expectations while still making total anatomic sense. Plus, peffer is always adorable :3

@auries-fr SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MORE. SHE’S AMAZING. I’ve always loved how unique her style is. Linework is def the centerpeice of her art, it’s always so stunning and amazing. It works so well with the way she colours and shades. Plus the expressions are so LOUD and fun, it’s always really fun art to look at!

@hatandclogsart REALLY REALLY REALLY deserves more love. I’ve commissioned over 15 pieces from them already. Do I show any sign of stopping? Nope not at all. They’re such a seriously talented artist with a unique and enjoyable art style. Looking at their art just makes me feel nice and good inside. I love it.

There’s def more people I can talk about and I’ll probably do a part 2! But this post has gotten pretty long so it’s time to wrap up. I honestly love all of your art so much, be it drawn or written <3

My Creative Year in Review 2018

Preface: This will be a bit of a mashup of two things; art and writing. But I’ll be clear. This is also a long post, I’m very sorry. Apparently I don’t shut up.

Total number of creations? (Or a rough guess!)

Art - Finished; 221 (not all published) Art - WIPS; 25 Writing - Published; 4 Writing - WIPS; 9 ?

Was there a project that you didn’t get around to?

In terms of starting or finishing? Lol. I didn’t get around to publishing the first chapter of the MU fic, which I desperately still want to before S2 starts. Because I keep writing all the middle bits instead. Nor did I get around to start writing the “winter fic” beyond plot points and a few little scenes.

There’s a looooooooooooooot of art I didn’t get around to either starting properly or finishing. Lol. I have a L’Rell piece I really want to do, as well as [another] mirror Stamets piece I want to do.

What was the creation you had the most fun making?

Art: Oh that’s hard. A lot of things for a lot of different reasons. I enjoyed the Holiday artworks because they were….really out of my depth and fun. Mostly I loved sending them out on cards to friends.

More recently I had a lot of fun doing the Patroclus and Achilles piece. Loved using golden hues.

Also have a lot of fun with Not Safe for Work-Viewing pieces, but those will never be published here. :D Sorry.

Writing: I had a surprising amount of fun writing the Vampire AU fic [Just a Taste] for Halloween. Which I never expected to write anything vampiric, ever, and also it came together really quickly. Building the world in that short fic was a lot of fun.

Any surprises? (E.g. a character or ship you never thought you’d create for or a project that came out of nowhere?)

Well honestly this whole revival to art and writing came as a surprise, I hadn’t done either in many years. I was also never a Star Trek fan prior to Disco, nor have I ever been a part of a fandom before. This is my first! So that was surprising, also surprising was how massively obsessed I became and how important it became to me. But the best surprise out of all of that is the connections to people I’ve made and the friendships that have come from that. ily. <3 Also not going to lie, pretty surprised that suddenly my art has become mega-fuckin-colourful. Where did this love of neon come from??? Wtf

What was the hardest creation to make?

Writing; MU fic - hands down. I have pages and pages and pages of resources. Not only is it going to be a long story (I endeavour and hope) but also from the amount of which I am pulling from and want to align to canon as as best I can as well. Being a new fan to Trek also... it’s been pretty overwhelming to get these details right. But at the same time, really trying to flesh out a character we never met or saw in the show, and have them interact with the established canon and have that all make sense… That and have the science in it make as much sense as possible, I’ve based a few new things on scientific principles and things that exist and just trying to elevate them to a cosmic scale… and hope I can pull that off too. It’s pretty intimidating. Not going into it, but the way the story weaves and intersects with a few different genres.. I just want to have it make sense in it’s self contained body of work.

Yeah it’s hard. Lol. Biggest thing I’ve ever tried to do. But, I love it, truly. I think about this whole project an inhumane amount of times every day, and I love that.

It’s also hard because I’d love to be a linear writer, but I am not. At all. I’m constantly writing ahead, well and truly ahead, but then coming back, adding to and editing earlier bits and rewriting and rewriting….rewriting… ugh

The subjects and themes are also a little heavy, and it’s cathartic to write about, sure, but also wanting to do those moments justice and with respect and integrity - because that’s important to me too.

The whole thing is just a lot of fuckin work, lol. But I really love it. Already - and it’s nowhere near done.

Art; Probably the one where Paul is laying down [crying] in the spore chamber. It was my first return to trying to paint semi-realism, and... it didn’t work out. I’m not happy with it anymore, but also proud that I pulled it off. That pose? Hair? HAND? UGH those took me too long to get right. But, overall it certainly taught me a lot to use on future more realism-ish pieces such as the Cosmic/Celestial pics of Hugh and Paul [which I love.]

What inspired you the most this year?

Oh, easy. Discovery. Hugh and Paul, hands down both of those things. But also to the endlessly talented people who I’ve come to know and also enjoy the works of - be it written, art, or otherwise. Creativity inspires creativity.

What are you most proud of? (A creation, something you learned, etc)

Art: The Cosmic/Celestial pieces. Very proud of those. (So much so I made metal prints of them and they sit on my bookshelf between a salt lamp.) I really love how they came out, and really the original (Cosmic Paul) was kind of an accident, a happy accident if you will.

Also the piece of Anthony I did for Anthony’s birthday. That was a lot of fun constructing something visually representative of a person.

Any goals/plans/ideas for next year?

Fucking get some headway on my MU fic so I can stop being so annoying by just talking about it, and fucking start publishing it already - for then it then it would EXIST in the word. LOL. Ugh. That’s the only big plan, that’s all I want to do. Whatever art I will do - I will just find inspiration in the moment to do. No plans, other than the L’Rell piece and a couple other WIPs - maybe.

Honestly just that and trying to keep improving, both in writing and in drawing. I feel like I’ve improved over this past year, so would love to just continue on that trajectory.

The Cosmic and Celestial Series I just love how these turned out, especially because it was such a surprise how it turned out originally. But being able portray this cosmic divinity of which I uphold them both to be in my mind was really awesome to pull off. The colours, and dramatic light, this whole thing was so fucking fun. The whole painting with colours as highlights / shadows / dual light source was a huge experiment for me and it taught me a huge amount, so I really love it for many reasons.

The Song of Achilles I started sketching this while I was listening to the audio book and while I fell in love with these two. Please, again, do go read this book. But the detailing on the spear, the auras and Achilles hair were my favourite bits. Oh and the gold blood. Of course, lol. Loved doing the symbolic imagery

Anthony Rapp’s Birthday Portrait Because this man means a whole lot to me, and it was nice really nice for a change of pace to try and depict him and things that are important to him. Also really proud of that shoe, ngl. & And MU Stamets and his Mycelium Sun

Huge experiment in terms of colour and lighting for me, and I love love love how it turned out. Even if it’s a little rough. This one was so much fun, and I also printed this out on metal actually lol. Looks pretty cool. & First MU Culmets Work Still in my heart, even though it’s a earlier work, because it was the first exploitation of this duo for me, and how they might be together. Also where I came up with the HC for his facial scar, which I always will include in any MU Hugh depiction of mine. But I still really like how their characterisation translates in this one.

Writing

Nomenclature.

The archaeology AU story I wrote for 30MinuteLoop. Also well, this is the only one that’s safe for viewing that’s published, lol, but I am genuinely really proud of this and seeing it through to completion.

But also the MU story is a fave, but this is the only published section so far:

How you decide on which style to use for individual pieces?

Unless it’s something very specific in mind (like the holiday pieces) I just kind of let it take a life of its own. See what it evolves into. I might have one idea to where I want it to go before I export it to PS, but once in PS it might take a whole new life (prime example if the original Cosmic/Celestial Paul. The original was very flat, and pretty boring lol but really became something else in PS. Actually it was supposed to be originally a visual piece to accompany my Vampire fic - and Vampire Hugh picture. But that changed entirely once I got it into PS.)

(It’s hard to see but there’s a bite mark on the original side.)

I'd also know more about your literal process, as in: what's your hardware set-up, what software do you use?

I have a weird all over the place set up. Lol.

So I do the majority of the work on my iPad, up until a stage where I don’t think I can go any further with it (or need more than 6 layers at my disposal) and then export it to my PC (either work or home) and then work on it further in Photoshop. Of which it then gains infinite amount of layers, lmao. Oh god.

As for the file on the iPad, when I’m working on that I can only have 6 layers. So usually will do sketch/line-work on one (or two, if I have to work a problematic bit but then merge it with the rest) and same with the colour/painting. That’s always on one layer, which I’ve grown to really like working like that. I might do skin on one, then clothes on another, but eventually will merge them. If it’s a full paint (or even half paint maybe), the colour and line layer will eventually be merged as I erase the lines I no longer need as I go and blend that layer more seamlessly into the painted layer. It just ending up a purely painted file without the original lines. Another layer may be added for more delicate details such as eyelashes and eyebrows, things like that.

Everything I do once exported to Photoshop is just with a mouse, I have a Wacom tablet… But I don’t use it, because I haven’t been bothered calibrating it with my dual monitor setup, and am happy doing most of the work on the iPad anyway as it kinda acts like a Cintiq in that regard. But localised. (Plus I can take it anywhere with me, interstate, overseas, to work, to the park, etc. I love that mobility.) Depending if I need a certain element that’s vector based, I’ll make it in Corel Draw or Illustrator, too. I also have Corel painter....buuuuuuuuut still haven’t used it. That’s a goal for 2019 for sure, lmao. Very occasionally I will physically sketch out the idea (like the holiday pieces) scan, and rework, redraw, line it, or whatever in the iPad then go forth with all of the above processes.

How long does it usually take you from start to finish?

Art: How long a piece takes really varies lol. Sketches can be between 1 - 4 hours on average, sometimes more. Flat colours will be a couple hours more. Half paints usually 4-8 more hours. Full paints and more realism stuff like the Cosmic/Celestial is total of 18hours+ but those times are just a rough idea, sometimes something just works out a lot quicker. Sometimes longer.

Writing: FOR FUYCKING EVER. I’m the slowest writer ever.

Do you have art WIPs and what do you think keeps you from finishing them?

I have a lot of art WIPs lol I think just losing drive or inspiration to finish them is what mainly kills them, or me getting frustrated that it isn’t working out like I wanted. Sometimes I just forget they exist.

Probably same goes for writing, too. Lol. Also it could be that I’ll dream up the entire (or mostly) of the story, but then getting it onto the page is hard. I want to work at getting better at that.

Do you do any non-fanart, too?

Sure. Although not often anymore, I’m honestly just inhumanly obsessed with Hugh and Paul.. Even when I start a project that isn’t centric to either or both of them… Often it will kind of morph into them. oops.

I want to say yes to fic too...but That’s a project I haven’t worked on in fucking years and years, so I doubt that really counts anymore.

Same goes for Deku, if he gotta open up to someone it’s gonna be Iida, Todoroki or Uraraka :0 well, it’s not like it’s impossible for them to talk about it, but I can see it happen more in a possible future where they’ve grown closer than they are atm in canon! At least imho haha
