Okay with Dune 2 being mostly about messianic philosophy and the next one probably even moreso, I wanna talk about what I see as the BIG MESSIANIC PICTURE behind the setting, or at least what I believe it to be. There's going to be spoilers in here, but they're not going to be anything you're going to see on screen in this trilogy.

I'm gonna start off by highlighting something that might not be totally obvious at first glance. There are two completely different prophecies Paul finds his terrible purpose in. The Kwizatz Haderach is the ‘ultimate human’ envisioned by the Bene Gesserit who will have an enhanced power of prescience because he can project the Other Memory through both the X and Y chromosome and free humanity from its animal nature. The Lisan al-Gaib is a myth planted in the Fremen culture by the Bene Gesserit in case the Sisterhood ever needed to control them. The big tldr is that Bene Gesserit training involves a lot of learning through observation, so their kids tend to learn things so fast it looks like they already knew them and they pass that off as a miracle.

I think it’s pretty obvious we’re supposed to find this Kwizatz Haderach thing pretty sus. The disciples of this prophecy are themselves purveyors of false prophecy. Paul certainly doesn’t believe he’s the Kwizatz Haderach, and that’s because he knows he’s not the Lisan al-Gaib. But he does wind up ticking the boxes. He does in fact survive the Water of Life ritual despite his sex. He is indeed uniquely prescient because he can see both sides of the Other Memory. Thing is as we move forward into the books that are not getting movies, we’re asked to reinspect this because of all the other Kwizatz Haderachs.

Brian Herbert gets kind of a raw deal because he didn’t have his father’s writing chops, but we’re comparing him directly to a person many consider to be the greatest science fiction author of all time. What he did have is a deeper insight into his dad’s setting and philosophies than anyone else, so miss me with any mess about which books you don’t consider canon unless you’re ready to go all Council of Nicea with me. Anyway, a really prominently weird thing that loses a lot of people is that Paul’s kid is a worm. He’s not born that way, he basically does the Water of Life ritual in the middle of a bunch of pupating sand worm larvae and comes out of it as a big worm with a human head that can produce spice in his own body. Leto II claims that he’s the Kwizatz Haderach, and to be fair, he is way more of an ‘ultimate being’ than his dad. People worship him not as a prophet, but as a god. Paul brought revolution to the universe, Leto II brought peace. It’s the peace of a godlike tyrant who can read minds and punish dissidence before it happens, but as long as we’re comparing people to their dads it's not like he started a race war that killed 26 billion people in the name of ‘justice.’

You may have heard Duncan Idaho winds up being the real Kwizatz Haderach. If you remember that gimp suit beetle thing in the first movie, the Harkonnens and their Tlelaxu buddies take dead people and turn them into sort of clone-zombie servitors called gholas. I’m not making any promises, but there is a real possibility the third movie will have Jason Momoa in a gimp suit, because Duncan is the best ghola. The second Duncan Idaho, bearing the edgy mid-century sci-fi moniker Hayt, is a gift from the Tlelaxu to Paul after his rise to power as an ostensible ‘we’re sorry we helped the Harkonnens kill your entire family.’ If you’ve seen the 1984 Dune movie you’ll know that the Duke of House Atreides keeps a pug. What you might not know is that it’s been the same pug for 10,000 years by virtue of genetic xeroxing. Once Leto II takes over, Duncan becomes the new house pug. Duncans serve as mentats, swordmasters, philosophers, and more over millenia of incarnations. Eventually one of the Duncans gets slammed with all the memories of the previous Duncans and he’s got this totally bizarre version of the Other Memory where he can remember all of his ancestors' memories, but his ancestors are also himself. Thereafter he can run like the Flash and fistfight robots and people call him the Kwizatz Haderach. Like I said, Brian’s books are petty controversial among fans.

Also the reverse-Bene Gesserit wind up making a Bizarro Kwizatz Haderach at one point but he’s just prescient enough to see that there isn’t a future where he isn’t just a washed up fraud.

Now let’s put it all together. I think the core philosophical study at the center of Dune is the question ‘What is a messiah?’ And like any great work of art it really is more about the question than the answer. Our three Kwizatz Haderachs (I’m not gonna count Thallo, he’s more like an allegory for Joel Olstein) propose some possibilities. Paul is the guy who ticks all the boxes. His messianic status is descriptive, not prescriptive. He isn’t actually the guy the Bene Gesserit thought it was going to be, so that notion of predestination is gone, but if the Kwizatz Haderach is ‘the man who can use the Other Memory,’ then he’s it. He and the people around him knew the prophecy and chose to lean in that direction, he got

Leto II is the closest thing to a divine manifestation that fits in this universe. He is literally in the body of one of the unstoppable forces of nature the Fremen venerate as their protector. He calls himself ‘God-Emperor’ in a setting where every man, woman, child, face dancer, and thing in between is raised on the principle that there is a monotheistic creator deity and that deity wants humanity to flourish. Everyone who didn’t believe in God got killed by robots ten thousand years ago. By insisting on literal religious worship of his political station, Leto II is seriously making some waves. Imo this is sort of like an extreme example where the question is more like ‘Is this what it takes before you’ll call someone the messiah?’ Even then, the fact that this dude is definitely NOT God in the way this setting understands it casts aspersions on the idea of a visibly supernatural force being inherently divine.

Finally, Duncan is a total freak accident. He is the ‘perfect human’ because he has been iterated on and improved over and over again, but he has nothing at all to do with the Bene Gesserit breeding program. Thousands of years after the Fremen uprising, when everyone thinks the Kwizatz Haderach is ancient history, there’s this guy with super powers. Unlike Paul, there’s no prophecy to suggest he might be the Chosen One and no decision to lean into the mythos surrounding it. The idea of iteration is really important with Duncan. Pardon the unflattering comparison, but there’s something kind of Heglian in how perfection is an inevitability as long as someone keeps stirring the pot.

I would argue that aspects of all of this are present in the first book. Leto II and Duncan are just deeper explorations of some of the questions posed by Paul. And if I’m to wrap this all up with a neat little bow, I think the point of it is that they’re all totally valid Kwizatz Haderachs. ‘Kwizatz Haderach’ are just words. For ten thousand years, there was a description of a thing and nothing existed that fit that description. There was a plan to create something that fit the bill, but we got a guy who could do the miracle even when we went off script. At that point it just seems like a semantic argument. Likewise, Leto II is pretty much God. He’s immortal, he sees all things past and future, his body produces and feeds him the chemical that puts him in that trippy oneness-with-everything. He sure as fuck isn’t what anyone was expecting God to look like, but it’s pretty much theologicially bankrupt to be like ‘Excuse me, something isn’t the universal superbeing unless it’s exactly what I already had in mind’ even if people do exactly that all the time. If the 400 meter single worm-boot fits, as they say. I’m not exactly how to make this sound as serious as I mean it, but Duncan as Kwizatz Haderach is basically like Brian Herbert shoving the pile of Korans off his desk and going ‘Fuck it, look.’ This guy’s got nothing to do with the Bene Gesserit. He has the genetic memory of his masculine ancestors, but you probably couldn’t get away with calling it the same thing Paul does in court. Half the reason he gets called the ‘perfect human’ is the sentiment expressed by ‘Oh dawg, Duncan, bro, he’s the realest, most human out of any of us.’ He is just called the Kwizatz Haderach because that is the language that exists in the culture that is closest to what he is. But you know what? Same with Paul, or Leto II, or even the Joel Olstein guy I mentioned.

Prophecies don’t predict saviors, they make them. Chani has a line in the new movie that’s something like ‘Promise them a messiah and they will wait forever,’ and I think that’s Dune boiled down to its most essential notion.

Seems like the Atomic Age inspired every second superhero to get his or her powers through radiation. The radioactive spider bite is probably the most well known example, but I saw some pretty wacky ones. Wondering if you know any other crazy or interesting ones too?

A lot of the Silver Age superheroes were radioactive, in no small part because Stan Lee was a nut on the subject and didn't particularly care about the actual science. So in addition to Spider-Man (and many of his rogues' gallery), you have the gamma bomb test that created the Hulk and many of his rogues' gallery (although Al Ewing invented a fascinating Kabbalistic mythology on top of the whole gamma radiation thing), the radioactive ooze that blinded Matt Murdock (and created the Ninja Turtles), and on and on...

The one you're probably less familiar with is the first origin story for mutants in the X-Men:

While the nuclear origin of Professor X and the 05 were eventually superseded by Chris Claremont's decision to shift from atomic radiation to genetic mutation, which would be formalized as the X-Gene, X-comics didn't completely abandon the Silver Age origin story for mutants. Building on Xavier's backstory of being the children of government scientists working at a top-secret project at Alamagordo, New Mexico (a clear allusion to the Trinity Test conducted at Los Alamos as part of the Manhattan Project), Fabien Nicieza, Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, and especially Mike Carey invented the Black Womb Project.

In a feat of paranoid conspiracy rarely seen outside of a game of Illuminati, the Black Womb Project was a secret genetic mutation research group using nuclear research as a cover story. Led by "Dr. Nathan Milbury" (aka Mister Sinister aka Nathaniel Essex) and the almost-as-evil Amanda Mueller (aka "the Black Womb Killer"), the Black Womb Project hired Dr. Brian Xavier (Charles' father), Dr. Kurt Marko (Cain Marko's father), and Irene Adler (working undercover to foil Sinister's bid for Dominion).

This project involved wildly unethical experimentation on thousands of children abducted by FBI agents Fred Duncan (who would become Professor X's FBI liason) and Carl Denti (the future anti-mutant villain "X-Cutioner"), including many of the Silver Age villains like Fred Dukes (the Blob) and Mortimer Toynbee (Toad), as well as experiments conducted by Drs. Xavier and Marko on their own children Charles and Cain. Supposedly, the Black Womb Project was designed to test a number of different methods of activating latent X-Genes...

But secretly, Nathaniel Essex/Mister Sinister was intending to use the Project as a springboard for his goals for immortality and ultimate dominion through something called the Cronus Device. This involved the implantation of Sinister's DNA into Xavier and Marko so that if Sinister ever died, a failsafe would activate that would wipe the minds of Charles, Marko, and their descendants and implant Sinister's mind and abilities into them.

While Sinister's plans were foiled by Irene Adler's precognition and Amanda Mueller's attempt to usurp the Cronus Device and replace Sinister's backup with her own (Mueller's mutant power gave her immortality but not eternal youth, so she wanted to use Sinister's backdoor to clone herself into youthful bodies), it did succeed in installing a Sinister backdoor into Charles Xavier and Cain Marko that Sinister would eventually infiltrate into the mutant DNA database at the heart of Krakoan resurrection. Sinister then used his backdoors to attempt to seize control of the Quiet Council and create an intergalatic mutant empire, which he would then sacrifice to fuel his ascension into Dominion.

Unfortunately, he didn't know that Enigma had gotten there first...

Pairing: Gabe X fem!reader

Summary: You try to send Gabe back to the well house but it goes wrong.

A/n: so for this story I replaced edens role with Gabe's because it helps the story progress better. If you don't understand what I mean, I mean that I made Gabe have parents and Gabe not be a shapeshifted version of Dodge. Instead Gabe always looked like Gabe and did actually fall in love with reader until later. Sorry for this extended thing! Enjoy! Also if I make a second part, their may be an imaginary key (one I made up to help the story progress). I almost forgot to mention, reader is related to Kinsey. Adopted child of Brian and Duncan because why not.

Gabe looked at your chained body on the floor like a predator. His sight made you sick. He was the reason your uncle died. He persuaded Sam. You wanted to scream.

"You know, I don't want to do this. And I don't have to. IF you tell me where the keys are kept."

Keys, keys, keys. It's all about keys. Gabe probably never even loved you. He only used you, a blood Locke, to get to the keys. This was the only time you hated being a Locke.

"If's? You know, this is kidnapping. What you're doing is illegal."

"Oh yeah? Well, right now you are the one threatened so I'd better watch what you say. Now, where are the keys? Do you have any on you? Apart from this chain one obviously. You know, I'm shocked you thought you'd be able to capture me with this." Gabe smirked.

"You certainly talk a lot for a demon. Well, now that I think about it, I don't know how much demons talk. If they talk as much as you then I feel bad for every person kidnapped by a demon. And everyone in Hell. Are you from Hell? You probably are. Are you Satan? Oh my god, do you have any air conditioning? It's really hot in this room. Anyways, is being a demon fun? How does it feel? Do you li-" you went on and on about random things to annoy Gabe until you were interrupted.

"ENOUGH." Gabe shouted.

"Excuse me, if you want to talk, wait for me to finish. Now, where were we. Ah yes, so d-" you continued like you didn't just get threatened by a demon.

"SHUT UP Y/N. JUST SO YOU KNOW, IM THE ONE ASKING QUESTIONS HERE. YOU'RE HELD HOSTAGE." Gabe said angrily and loudly.

"Alright calm down." You were dying of laughter inside but managed to say it with a straight face.

"So do you have any keys on you?"

The correct answer was yes but ain't no way you were going to tell him that. You were in Gabe's basement and his parents were home.

"Gabe sweetie! Come for dinner!" His mum shouted for him. You started snickering like crazy.

Gabe was mad.

"I'M COMING MUM!" He said frustrated.

He walked towards you and leaned in. He then whispered in your ears.

"Don't go anywhere. Not that you can."

"I hope you trip and fall while walking up the stairs and die" you retorted.

He scoffed and then left the room and locked the door.

First things first, you took the keys you had out of your pocket and in your hand. Your movement was limited by the chains but not enough to restrict any movement at all.

You took the head key, the music box key and the prison of the self key out of your pocket and placed them in your hands. Then, you took your phone out and texted Tyler, Bode and Kinsey your location simply with the words "HELP IN GABE'S BASEMENT. STAIRCASE IN HIS ROOM."

After a few minutes you got a message back from Kinsey.

"omw" the message read.

Gabe came into the basement after a few minutes.

"oh! Good to see you haven't moved." He said with a smirk on his face.

"very funny." You rolled your eyes.

"I see you have some keys in your hand. Going to give them to me?"

"NEVER." You replied.

He took the chain and tightened them around you. Then he made them release and wrap around your hand with the keys. He made it really tight. So tight that you were forced to let go of the keys.

"NO" You screamed.

"Any more?" Gabe smirked. His smirk was unbearable.

You had one more key on you. The anywhere key. But you couldn't let him take it from you.

"no." You lied.

"Well, you see, I'm good at reading body language. You looked away from me when you said it. You always look away when you lie. So where is it."

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Oh. No.

You weren't going to tell him. He couldn't know. It was a hard to reach place.

"I'm not lying!" You lied. Again.

"oh really?" Gabe walked towards you and then knelt directly in front of you. He leaned close. So close your lips were almost touching. Any movement could result in you kissing and you for sure did not want that.

"look at me and say it. Prove that you're not lying." He whispered.

"I- I uh... I don't-" Him being so close to you made it hard for you to speak.

"I don't have it!" You finally managed to say it.

"look, I know you have it. You tell me where it is, you won't lose anything." He threatened.

"threatening does not become you Gabe." You said to him disgusted.

He gently placed a hand on your cheek. You couldn't believe this touch once used to make you feel comfortable. Now any touch from him made you feel less safe than ever.

He slowly leaned in.

"Where. Is. It?" He asked "this is the last time y/n. No more chances after this."

You resisted. You didn't give in.

He slowly leaned in and placed a kiss on your lips. You squirmed. He continued to kiss you making you feel more sick every second. He stopped after a good 15 seconds.

"why are you doing this to me?!" You asked, disgusted.

"you're doing this to yourself." He replied.

He looked down at you in a way which made you uneasy. He smirked.

"I promise you this won't hurt a bit."

He pulled out a knife from his back pocket.

23 Republican Senators & 124 Congressmen signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court asking for a 50 state ban on mifepristone, a drug safer than tylenol that is standard treatment for abortion & miscarriages, "due to safety concerns". The brief DARES to argue that banning the life saving drug would save women from 'reproductive control'. (x) These 147 people would rather have women die of sepsis than let women control their own bodies. If your representatives are on this list, call them and tell their office you will be voting against them in the next election because they asked SCOTUS to throw the US medical drug system into chaos at the cost of American lives.

Simple Minds, grupo de Rock New Wave oriundo de Glasgow, Escócia. Após a extinção da banda punk Johnny and the Self Abusers, seus ex-integrantes resolveram apostar em outra sonoridade, formando assim o embrião do Simple Minds, que oficialmente foi criado no mesmo ano de 1978 por Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchill nas guitarras, Tony Donald no baixo e Brian McGee na bateria. A eles se juntaram um segundo guitarrista, Duncan Barnwell, e o tecladista Micheal McNeil. Com esta formação o grupo faz a sua primeira apresentação ao vivo, abrindo dois shows no "Glasgow´s Satellite Club". Logo depois Donald se desentendeu com o grupo e deixou a banda, para o seu lugar entrou Derek Forbes. Já com o novo baixista o grupo passou o ano tocando em vários cidades da Escócia e abriu a apresentação do Generation X em Edimburgo. Faixas reputadíssimas como "Promised", "Glittering Prize", "Alive and Kicking", "Sanctify Yourself", "All the Things She Said", "Ghostdancing" e "Someone Somewhere in Summertime", e seu maior sucesso: ´´Don`t You Forget About Me``, fazem do Simple Minds uma das mais populares bandas de Rock, sendo convidada para participar de alguns grandes festivais pela Europa. Låten representerar ett nytt kapitel i Charlies karriär, som redan har gett honom över 500 miljoner streams. “‘Downpour’ is an attempt to confront and reason with my inner critic and the perceived external ones.”, säger Charlie Cunningham ’Downpour’ skrevs av Charlie och producerades av Sam Scott och Gareth Jones, varav den sistnämnde också mixade spåret. Den spelades in i Charlies hem i Buckinghamshire. Den här sommaren har Charlie uppträtt flitigt och besökt festivaler som Montreal Jazz Festival, Reeperbahn, Whisper, Golden Leaves, Sacred Ground och Ottawa Bluesfest. Barbed Wire Part 3

Negan x reader

Warnings: threat of death, violence, swearing, fluff.

Summary: Negan, Y/n, Maggie, Daryl, and the others are walking through an old subway when they make it to a train. Dog runs off so Daryl chases him. Maggie starts threatening Negan's life so Y/n steps in...

A/n: If you are under the age of 18.....there is no smut so go ahead 😋 ENJOY!

Maggie points her gun at Negan from halfway across the train...

"Negan! I'm going to fuckin kill you!" She yelled.

"Put the gun down, Maggie!" Alden yells back.

"No! This has gone far enough! He nearly got me killed! He wouldn't help me up the train! So now.."

She cocked her gun and continued to point it at him.

Y/n stepped in the line of fire, she pointed her double barrel pistols at Maggie.

"Mag I know he hurt you, he killed Glenn. But killing him won't punish Negan...it'll punish me and Dale. I don't want my son to loose his father, and I don't want to loose my husband."

"He took mine away from me!" She screamed.

"I know, but that was years ago. And Negan..my man is here now and if you shoot him I swear on Hershel, Dale, and Judith's lives that I will make you suffer....you got that!?"

Negan gripped Y/n shoulder and kissed the top of her head. Maggie glared and put her gun away, she turned and watched as Gaege pounded on the train door begging for her to let him in.

"Y/n, remember...Negan killed your brother. If I were you I wouldn't turn my back on him." Maggie warned.

"He's a changed man, I've already forgave him. My father taught me how to forget and forgive, that's what Brian would've wanted. He wouldn't have want me to be at war with the man who killed him, he would've wanted me to be at piece with him."

"Please Maggie!" Gaege screamed.

They all turned and watched him banging on the glass, Y/n hugged Negan and burried her head into his chest.

"Don't watch, honey....I'm here it's okay." He whispered.

Alden stood up and ran for the door, Duncan grabbed him and held him tight.

"You can't just let him get eaten!" He yelled.

Maggie glared. "The walkers will get through. Leave him."

"You're a murderer!" Y/n screamed. "Where is the woman I met at the beginning of all this, huh? The woman who didn't want to kill a walker, she wanted to save them because she thought they were sick! What in the unholy fuck happened to you, Mag!?"

Negan hugged Y/n tighter and rubbed her back. They could hear Gaege being devoured at the other side of the door.

"Negan." She whimpered.

"Don't cry, baby. It'll all be over soon."

Y/n, Negan, Daryl, Maggie, and Father Gabriel sat inside a house waiting for what plan came next.

Y/n stood up....

"So, what do we do now, Mag? Huh? Do we sit here with our thumbs up our butts waiting for someone to come in here and finish us off?"

"I'm the leader here! I make the decisions!" Maggie shouted back.

"You're just as bad as The Governor..... deciding who lives and who dies, like it's your God given right!"

Maggie stood up and held a knife to Y/n neck.

"Another word and I'll--"

"You'll what, Mag? Get your ass kicked by the one and only me? Because that's what's about to go down!"

She pulled out her long curved dagger and pointed it at Maggie...

"I'm ready to to get this done, in order to protect the lives that you're so carelessly waisting."

Maggie dropped her weapon....

"We'll finish when we're back at Alexandria."

She turned to walk away until...

"Why? So Hershel can see what a monster you really are?"

Maggie turned and charged at Y/n. Y/n/n grabbed her by the back of her jacket and slammed her into the wall. Maggie swung her fist, Y/n dodged and kicked her backwards into the dinner table, it made a loud crack when she collided with it.

The men ran over and pulled them away from each other. Daryl was holding back Maggie and Negan was holding back Y/n, while Gabe was negotiating.

"Why don't you sleep upstairs, Maggie? And Y/n sleeps down here in the den with Negan?" Gabe asked.

Y/n nodded and pulled away....

"I'm not saving your life ever again." She said.

Negan and Y/n laid on the couch together, he was on the bottom half sitting up and she was on the top snuggled into his chest.

"That was some bad ass shit, Y/n." He chuckled.

"Thank you."

"When we get back, we need to teach Dale everything there is to know about survival."

Y/n nodded at the suggestion...

"But first we sleep."

Negan kissed the top of her head, and held her close.

"I love you, baby."

She smiled and kissed his hand...

"I love you too."
