I have been recreating meanings of the runes for my own purposes based on nothing else than original and scholarly sources… and I’d like to propose a case for the ᛉ rune (in addition to ᛒ) to be associated with Frigg/Frig/Frija based on the Anglo-Saxon rune poem.

Elk-sedge keeps its home most often in the swamps,

it grows in the water, and grimly wounds,

it burns the blood of any man who grasps it.

This portion of the poem is something I have yet to see in “modernized” sources. Many say it means Elk based on the Proto-Germanic word of Algiz. But the Anglo-Saxon poem is the oldest that we know of, followed by the Norwegian and Icelandic poems. Or which, they read that this rune actually means “man.”

For me, I rather like the idea of the elk-sedge. Not only does it grow in the marshlands, the fens, it also feels very familiar to the story of the mistletoe.

What petnames do catra and adora use??

okay KJHSKJXSMN i've forgotten if this is for the prompt thing or not but if it is. here you go :D it's pretty rambly and unedited and kind of abrupt, but i quite like it!

tl;dr/miles what the fuck: catra calls adora babe ironically and 'starlight' when she's tired and soft and probably falling asleep. adora calls catra moonlight/sunshine/anything like that pretty much constantly but also to embarrass her in public. the both call each other 'baby' in like. extreme times of crisis and more specifically when one of them needs comforting, mostly after a nightmare or panic attack. also i think they occasionally call each other 'love' but very rarely and where no-one can hear them.

Catra hates it when Adora cries.

(It reminds her too much of being a kid, of the times when Shadow Weaver would punish her or take away her food, and Adora would curl around her on the narrow bottom bunk and cry into her shirt until they both fell asleep and she'd have to scramble out of her grip before someone would come in and catch them. It reminds her of the war, and every single time she'd catch sight of Adora gazing at her with tears in her eyes from the opposite side of the battlefield.

It reminds her of Prime's flagship, of endless empty space yawning behind her, of Adora crying as she reached across infinite light years and then of her mind buzzing blank, falling, falling -)

Well, she hates seeing her upset in general, but - but seeing her like this - it's worse. It's worse than anything else, worse than waking up next to her and knowing she's having a nightmare, worse than hearing her call out for her in her sleep, worse than seeing her broken body in her own dreams.

"What happened?" she whispers, and Adora buries her face in her shoulder and sobs.

Adora lets out a tiny, breathless noise, somewhere in the back of her throat, and she feels it against her collarbone. "I - I don't - I c- Catra, I -"

"I know," she says instead. "I know, baby, I know. I know it's hard, but I promise you'll start to feel more in control if you try it. Will you do it with me?"

A moment passes, and Catra can still feel Adora trembling against her, and then she lets out another choked noise and heaves a deep, unsteady breath.

Another, rattling out of her lungs.

Another, steadier this time, and Catra joins in with her.

"Good," she murmurs. "Good - great. You're doing better than me. Which isn't hard, admittedly."

Adora laughs. The soft, broken kind of laugh, the kind of laugh she's used to dreading, because it almost always comes with a breakdown of some kind. And the breath she takes comes out slower, more stable. Catra smiles into her shoulder.

"Y- you - you sound like - like, uh - Perfuma."

"Well, I sure hope so. I don't spend all that time around her for nothing."

Another laugh. Adora wipes her eyes on her elbow and shifts slightly, resting her cheek against Catra's collarbone. "'S s'posed to be free therapy, baby."

"Girlfriend training, you mean."

"Mmrgh."

Catra is the one who laughs, this time. "Your Melog impression is coming along nicely."

Adora heaves another shuddering breath, burying her face back in Catra's neck. "J-just - I - I only just got you back, I can't - I can't lose you again -"

"I know," she tries. "Believe me, I know. I promise I'm not going anywhere." She fumbles for Adora's hand, laces their fingers together. "See? I'm right here. With you. Nothing's going to happen to me - to either of us. I won't let it. Melog won't let it. Glimmer and Bow and your weird obnoxious talking horse won't let it."

Adora huffs against her collarbone. "Obnoxious talking horse."

"Obnoxious talking horse. Still don't know his name."

They both laugh a little at that. And then - "You think you're not helping," Adora mumbles, smiling into her shirt. "But you are. You're helping. By being here, you're helping, I swear."

"I don't feel like I am -"

"I love you." She reaches up to tap Catra's nose, like she used to when they were little kids. "You're helping. You're talking to me and doing the big cuddle thing you know I like and you're purring and it's nice and you're nice and I love you."

"'M not purring," she mumbles, decidedly not purring, and Adora giggles and pokes her nose again.

"You're adorable."

"You sound like you're drunk. Are you drunk?"

"'M exhausted," she sighs, slumping down in Catra's arms. "And thank you. For talking me down from that."

"I didn't do anything." (I felt - I felt helpless. I just sat there and tried to make you laugh and then you started crying again and I didn't know what to do so I just started saying stuff and now you're -)

"You did," Adora says softly, and she's still tired and broken and crying, still curled up against her like she's the only thing left in the world, and when Catra starts stroking her hair and rocking her gently in her arms she breathes out, long and slow, and murmurs, "I just - wanna - I just wanna cry for a little bit. I'm so -"

"Stressed and tired and tense. I know. You can do that. I'm here."

Adora gives her a small, relieved look, and folds into her arms.

(Catra tries not to stiffen, to react visibly when she starts crying properly, taking deep, shuddering breaths that sound like she's dying in her arms all over again. Stars, she hates it when she cries, and she hates it when she cries like this - like the world is ending, like she's in pain, like -)

"I know," she says instead. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I know."

(Adora holds her tighter, buries her head in her shoulder again, and she hopes it's enough.)

They stay like this for a while, curled around each other in a shaft of moonlight, and she listens to the fucking love of her life cry in her arms, and feels completely, utterly useless.

And when Adora falls silent - when Adora falls silent -

"You okay?" she says, breathlessly, awkwardly.

"Mm." Adora lifts her head, settling it against her collarbone again. "'M fine now. Thank you."

"For what?"

She shrugs. "For being here. For being you."

Oh. Huh.

Catra hesitates, and then kisses the top of her head in response. Ugh. Fuck.

"Can... can we lie down? I'm so - I just - I don't want to think anymore. I just - I want to sleep. So badly." She laughs, a little brokenly, and when she glances up at her, her eyes are full of some indescribable emotion that tugs at the base of Catra's ribcage.

"Yeah," she whispers back. "Yeah, we can do that. We can sleep in tomorrow as well if you want."

Adora smiles. "We can?"

Catra smiles back. She really is cute. "We can. I can get us the day off."

"Without resorting to violence?"

"No promises."

Catra kisses her awake.

It's almost midday when she finally opens her eyes, more caught up in the feeling of Catra's lips ghosting over her forehead than anything else, and laughs.

"Good morning."

Catra grins down at her. Her hair is hanging in her eyes and curling at the nape of her neck, and Adora thinks that, lit by the early morning light like this, she's never looked more beautiful. "Morning, starlight."

"Starlight?"

"Starlight." She leans over and kisses the bridge of her nose gently, still smiling, and Adora smirks at her as she pulls away.

"Careful. People might actually think you like me." (Starlight, her mind sings.)

Catra sticks her tongue out at her. "It's a good thing I love you, then."

"Mm." She leans up to kiss her this time, to meet her halfway and pull her gently down next to her. She's unbelievably soft and small and delicate in her arms, and it's odd to think that this is the same person who used to be in charge of a planet-wide war, who could (and still can) very easily knock her out. This is the same person who, just a few hours ago, was rocking her and whispering whatever soft nonsense she could think of into her ear, and Adora is hopelessly, ridiculously in love with her.

Catra pulls away first, slowly, softly, and grins again at her expression. "You're staring. And doing the weird thing, With your face."

"Sure am. And I'm gonna do it every day."

"You're the strangest person in the universe."

Adora kisses her again, feels her laugh against her smile. "And you're in love with me."

"Mmf. Maybe."

She pokes her shoulder, laughing too. "It's too late to take it back now."

Catra kisses her a third time, stroking and running her fingers through her hair, soft and gentle and slow. When she pulls back, her eyes are glowing from deep within in the dim light, and she's stunning, and Adora loves her. "No comment."

Disclaimer: I used both what we can extrapolate is likely indigenous to the region based on descriptions of the landscape and climate as well as my own headcanons and inspirations and reference books on similar habitats as well as The Atlas of Middle Earth and The Flora of Middle Earth

The March of Maedhros was a realm in East Beleriand that fell between Dorthonion and the Blue Mountains and was next to Maglor's Gap. It was primarily hills and plains in a cold, possibly taiga region. The fortress of Himring was the stronghold of Maedhros on one of the more prominent hills

The Flora and fauna of the March of Maedhros and around Himring is hardy and adapted to a cold, harsh climate. 

Flora around the lake or lakes could include species of Myriophyllum, marsh thistle, hornwort, Sphagnum Moss, feather moss, bog rosemary, partridgeberry, reindeer lichen, ground elder, sword-leaf dogbane, bog sedge, spring vetch, white spruce, cloudberry, cowslip, dwarf cherry, and a variety of species of heath, iris (yellow dwarf iris, Iris relicta, etc), and fern (oblong woodsia, leathery moonwort, spinulose woodfern, etc)

Of course many of these plants would have a relatively short season as the winters are long and the cold weather is even longer. I go into a bit more about my headcanons about the climate here 

I’ve always imagined snow leopards around Himring. @houndsofvalinor-art did an absolutely gorgeous piece based on my headcanons for that! It’s the one in my blog background/header!

I imagine a location or locations similar to Lake Baikal in Siberia, which is home the world’s only completely freshwater seal as well as cnidarian species that are not found anywhere else in the world. The seals in Himring’s near frozen lake are abundant but are rarely slain. They are near inedible though their fat is highly useful for oils and their skins are occasionally used as well. 

Birds are often migratory, spending only certain months of the year in the area (though not all). Some possibilities are snowy owls, ptarmigans including rock, willow, and white tailed ptarmigans, tundra swans, snowy buntings, larkspurs, plovers, and species of goose and loons. 

Other animals include the sable, stoat, red and arctic foxes, marmots, elk and reindeer, mountain hare, mountain goats, arctic wolves, and I like to imagine smaller species of mammoths or woolly rhinos trek through the March on their search for fresh grass and vegetation.

Twinberry Honeysuckle (Lonicera involucrata)

I’ve been enjoying the spots of sun we’ve been getting in between rain showers, and part of that time has included watching the bumblebees and hummingbirds at the big twinberry honeysuckle bush outside my kitchen window. While many parts of North America are plagued by invasive honeysuckle species like Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) and Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) we do have some native species within that genus.

Twinberry gets its name from the pairs of black berries that form from these yellow tube-shaped flowers at the ends of branches full of green, ovate leaves. The flowers are a hit with local native pollinators, and a variety of birds like Oregon dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis oreganus), black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and chestnut-backed chickadees (Poecile rufescens), and house finches all find shelter in its branches throughout the day. In the soil beneath it can be found a dense growth of slough sedge (Carex obnupta), and I’m cultivating various mosses there as well.

Sources vary as to whether the berries are edible (but unpalatable) or toxic, so I recommend not eating them. They’re a great forage for several species of birds and other wildlife, and the leaves are also eaten by deer, elk, and other herbivores, which makes them a great option for habitat restoration in their native range. There may be some adverse effect for cattle who eat the leaves, so be cautious if you are planting where cows may graze. Twinberry prefers damp to wet soil conditions, and while it can handle full sun, it does best in a partly or fully shaded location. Consider it as an understory plant beneath established trees. While you can grow twinberry from seeds with a 90 day stratification period, spring softwood or fall hardwood cuttings may be an easier option.

Rune a Day Project - Day 24 - November 24, 2021 - Algiz (or Elgaz/Elhaz)

Day 24 of my rune a day project. Today I drew Algiz. Literally, it means "elk-sedge" (Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem) or "Yew" (reversed and found in the Younger Futhark). It represents protection, defense, the higher self, support patronage, care, guardian, reaching up to the divine, prayer, warding, hallowing, restraint, resistance, shield, Yggdrasil, guardian spirits, Hamingja, communication with spirits and the divine.

Lots of references out there hone in on the "elk" part of "elk-sedge", but I wanted to learn more about the actual plant itself. Sedge has hundreds of varieties, but the one the Anglo-Saxon rune poem is referring to is claudium mariscus, called in modern times "sawtooth sedge", "swamp sawgrass", "great fen-sedge", or "saw sedge". It grows in boggy areas just as the poem describes and it is one of the grasses used in thatching houses (literally up to modern times). It can grow about 8 feet tall and is native to temperate areas of Europe and Asia. North America has several related subspecies. The edges of the leaves are sharp, hence the sense of defense and protection, because you can literally cut yourself on these plants.

Sedge as a species in all of its varieties is known to provide ground-cover and protection for small animals & pollinators. So yet again, there's that protection association.

I also see a roof support column in the shape of Algiz, which again connects that with protection from the outside world (the roof column supports the thatched roof, right?).

Many sources also related this to Yggdrasil and/or the Tree of Life, prayer, and communication to the spirit world and the divines. I think this is pretty obvious going by the shape - yep, looks like a tree, and yep, absolutely resembles a person with arms wide in prayer. Thus, if you want to draw deeper associations to this rune on those interpretations, I think that makes a lot of sense.

Upside down, this rune exists as "yr" in the Younger Futhark, representing the letter R and translated as "yew" (which in the Elder Futhark, is Eihwaz, ᛇ , which we talked about waaay back on day 9). In the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc it's "calc", representing and the letter K, and it could mean "chalice" or "chalk" maybe. For me, when I see this rune upside down, I think of the modern-day peace sign, ☮ . That was created by Gerald Holtom in 1958, and it stands for nuclear disarmament originally, but now is generally "peace".

Given that the "elk-sedge" interpretation of the rune seems to be *armed* self defense in some way, turning it upside down as an emblem of *disarming* seems appropriate, even if the symbol is not at all related to runes (it's a combo of the semaphore signals for "N" and "D").

Funny little coincidence, that.

Personally, martial artist and instructor, this rune REALLY speaks to me in terms of self defense. The idea that you learn, you arm yourself, but you only use it in defensive uses is the basic premise of all martial arts training that has any relationship to self defense. I really should be wearing this rune a lot as well as Tiwaz, the rune I wear all the time. I think I'll make it a point to include it on my person as much as possible going forward.

As an aside, this is one of those runes that some Nazis have slimed, so I reiterate, they can fuck right off.
