Thursday, November 30: Empyria, "Uncertain Reality"

The prog metal revival of the mid ‘90s was largely focused on the idea of playing a heavier version of late ‘70s Rush, and Empyria’s “Uncertain Reality” fell in line with that notion.  Both Rush and Dream Theater were obvious reference points for the Canadian act, and the multiple time changes and vaguely esoteric lyrics were part and parcel of the scene at the time.  Nonetheless, this was a surprisingly durable sound, so “Uncertain Reality” didn’t sound totally tethered to the ‘90s, since many other bands would soon adopt this very same approach with minimal variation.

so I cracked open my document for worldbuilding/writing for the first time in forever today

and I realized that I can worldbuild to infinity, but I can't actually write the story to save my life. So, in an attempt to get me motivated to write the thing, here's some information on the dominant religion in my world.

Worships a pantheon of gods and spirits. The main difference between the two is that gods can be replaced, but spirits cannot.

Spirits are the embodiments of abstract concepts, while gods are more like people with supreme power over a concrete object.

Sometimes humans mash together similar gods and spirits, as seen with how Krunin and Brin got mistaken for the same person, but some are distinct enough, like the fearfully unnamed spirit of death and Rylai

 Society sees the daytime sky as more in tune with the earth, even having a myth about how the daytime sky protects the earth from the vast expanse of the universe. Hence why Fyrian’s title is “God of the earthly sky” The night sky is seen as more tied to the universe at large, since you can see all of the stars at night.

The story goes that both Greavi, Astrapulli, and Fyrian worked together to create humanity, with Astrapulli going on to take the roll of being the one to guide humanity on the road to advancements, Fyrian being Humanity’s protector and Greavi being the great provider.

Astrapulli and Fyrian are often worshiped together in a duality or balance capacity, especially in the leviathan kingdom. It’s actually half the reason the Leviathan Kingdom’s capital of Crenan was established.

The gods are worshiped in daily life at their specific shrines. People will go there and pray and leave offerings towards a god.

Not everyone regularly worships every god, but each god and goddess has their own holidays that are upheld

It might seem weird that there hasn’t been much mythical drift across time and various disruptive historical events, however the explanation of this is two-fold. First, the gods are actually real, and have made several appearances throughout history and prehistory and in every country, thus leaving humanity to make a more concrete mythical lore. Secondly, Yvine Ojan spent a lot of time codifying the myths from all across the continent, creating a relatively solid canon for the gods, and it’s only been slightly over a hundred years since she did that, thus not giving the myths much time to drift

Krunin- god of the eternal flame

Commonly depicted as a war god, representing the undying loyalty and determination of soldiers, as well as the destruction of war.  In actuality he is a god of immortality and fire as his epithet would suggest, war is actually controlled by the spirit brin-who is close friends with Krunin.

Pynis (pie-nis)- Goddess of rocks and earth

Rylai (ree-ly)- god of living spirits

Has control over the souls of all living and dead creatures (including plants)

The spirit of death

Goes unnamed out of fear that writing the spirit’s name will call it to them.

It incites a soul’s journey to the beyond-place, which hosts the true kingdom of Rylai

Conflicting Lives- Island and Cities

Welcome to the Island! (Name in progress)

This is where the entirety of Conflicting Lives will take place. There are 5 cities on the island: Hermiton, Cursia, Wynnra, Empyria, and Survas. Each city is moddled after a Minecraft SMP Server: Hermitcraft for Hermiton, CursedCraft for Cursia, Wynncraft for Wynnra, EmpiresSMP for Empyria, and Project:SSC for Survas. (The servers associated with Curisa and Survas are very small and private servers that I as the author are apart of, and will not go into much further information about, but they both mean something to me so I have decided to include them in the story.)

Hermiton is the largest city by both land and population, and this is where most of the Hermits live. The terrain is full of rivers and lakes, but many have adapted by building homes in the water as to get away from the otherwise crowded areas. The Hero Agency is also located in Hermiton, in the farthest northeast area near the borders of Empyria and Wynnra. Some of the top Heros are often stationed in Hermiton, most often living there as well.

Empyria is the second largest by population, but second smallest by land. The terrain is very flat, will smal crests of hills dotted around the more central and western areas. This is also where most Heros-In-Training go to better learn and train to be a full fledged hero, though there are training facilities in each city, with Empyrias being the largest. One of the largest reporting firms have originated from Empyria.

Wynnra is the middle ground of all cities by both population and land. The terrain is very hilly and sometimes a bit difficult to navigate, but overall very calm and open. There are schools for different ype of magic users, and usually they stick to themselves in their school (those with fire magic often go to school that teach about fire magic, not schools that teach about other magic). Most would classify Wynnra as class based in terms of who goes where at what times in their life, but to Wynnrans, they are simply sticking by what and who they know. Some of the most powerful and dangerous villains are rumored to be from Wynnra.

Cursia is the second largest city by land, but second smallest by population. This is due to its very steep and mountainous terrain. The elevation quickly rises to an uninhabitable level where the tallest of the mountains are, but even on some of the smaller ones it gets too cold for most people to be comfortable. Most live by the coasts or on the small islands to the north, however there has always been a large concentration of civilians in the sound eastern area along the hermiton border. The well-known Crusia University is also located at the southern coast, providing all kinds of study opportunities for all to experience.

Survas is the smallest of all the cities by both population and land. This is due to the lack of most natural recourse and the harsh living conditions. They have to get most of their recourses imported from the other four cities, and there tends to be a higher than ideal level of crime (most of which is simple petty theft). One of the largest reporting firms is located in Survas, and they uncover just about everything people wonder about the water-locked city, and more

Thanks for the expert diagnosis... A part of him thinks. He had been stabbed. Blood had stained his skin and clothes. He had dragged himself from the last battlefield to safety. Pain dulled. Awareness did too. He can't remember the exact moments after he started dragging himself. A pathetic desire to survive. One he never asked for. He remembered the dirt under his nails. The feeling of his wound rubbing against the dirt and rocks on the ground. How his vision blurred and darkened at the edges. He could remember it in flashes. It felt unreal. And finally, his memory stops... Until he woke up. He was in pain and he felt sick. His head was still spinning. He tried to move in a panic from the cot he was on, but he just rolled over. His legs still didn't have the strength and the pain was almost enough for him to choke out a scream.

He rolled back onto his side, curling his body into a ball. As much as he could with the aching wound on his stomach. He buried his face in the fabric, his hands pressing against the warm bandages.

"I thought I was dead..." He had been more afraid than he had expected.
