hi! hope you’re doing well!!

i was just reading the comments on the everglow pirate mv to see what people were saying about the song (bc it slaps of course) and a lot of them were talking about how the group is apparently in dire straits and that the company needs to take action quickly or else they’ll fall apart/disband/etc. obviously it all seemed quite dramatic, but some of the things people mentioned (no full album/lightstick, yiren’s situation, the group’s current general absence from the spotlight, etc) were things that i did know about and aren’t necessarily great signs. as a person who is generally pretty informed on the girl group scene (and the number one first fan), i wanted to ask if you thought these claims had any legitimate merit or if it’s just fans worrying and creating problems where there aren’t any (or at least not to this scale). regardless, i just hope we get some good news about them soon :(

but to answer your question, im not that worried about them, tbh. it has been a while since their last comeback, but this is actually not the longest gap there's ever been. it's just about the same length right now as the gap between First and Pirate, and not as long as the gap between La Di Da and First. i wish their gaps werent so long but.... in any case, this is actually fairly normal for them. i think Yiren's situation and Onda's father passing away have been big delays though. but as for right now, they're actually doing pretty well right now, they've been performing all over the world at a couple big concerts and festivals. i think they were the first kpop girl group to ever perform in saudi arabia? they did that a couple weeks ago. they were in london recently too, and they just performed at 1thek's big "g-kpop" concert in seoul like last night. aisha has covid right now i think, so they were performing just as 4 members... but they were performing! and i've heard really good things, especially from people who were at the saudi arabia and london shows. yuehua is having yena come back next month, and i think everglow will probably be after that. i dont think they would be flying everglow all across the world if they werent gonna have them come back i think, haha. unfortunately it's very likely that it'll be without yiren... i'm not very informed about her current situation, but i do think she'll definitely be back... just... maybe not yet. i think there will probably be at least one comeback without her, similar to dreamcatcher in their era without handong. idols getting stuck in china is a recurring thing. i think this is more of a handong situation than a cheng xiao/meiqi/xuanyi situation though, i really do.

fans do love to worry and complain though. everglow arent on top of the world, that's true, they're not the biggest kpop group ever, but i think theyre doing pretty fine. there are a lot of girl groups who would KILL to be where everglow is right now. it's taking longer than i would have hoped, but i think they'll come back relatively soon. probably september or october. and hopefully the gap after that comeback won't be so long

#as for lightsticks though lol i dont really care #i have the word lightstick muted here and on twitter because i hate lightsticks and i think theyre a scam haha #but yeah no idk i have faith in everglow #im more worried about a group like weki meki... but even they have been doing a number of concerts and stuff recently! #building up some momentum! #thank you for the ask though! i love to talk about this stuff

I am seeing "neos will soon realize that doyoung is important" twts again. I don't know if I'm overly tired right now but this just rubs me the wrong way. Before, when I read those, I just ignore it. But it's been a 2 years since I joined the fandom and Doyoung doesn't lack spotlight (the very reason antis get insecure is because they know that dy is important whether they accept that or deny it) but when I see such twts (like right now) I see it as dy stans (some) trying to make him a victim, when he is far from it.

Dy knows how to handle his antis, he knows what opportunities to grab, he knows how to sell himself, he knows what he wants. If only some stans focus on that, there would be less fighting with antis that drag dy with every chance they've got. Because dy has been flourishing despite all their empty barking. Let him flourish without care for antis.

Of course, dy may be struggling bts, maybe he gets hurt by online insults but the fact that he comes back strong every damn time needs more appreciation than fighting every anti to make them love dy. Fans need to realize that they can't have everybody on their bias' side simply because antis don't want to. Fans don't have to be hellbent on protecting their idols, they have more means of doing that than us mere fans.

Appreciate his hardwork. Support his projects. Focus on him. He is important, we know that. But make him feel that by showcasing his work and talents instead of crying "oh god when will yall realize that this is dy's power" or "we've been saying for years that dy is like this and that yall just blind" Dy doesn't need sympathy. He needs a return of investment. Sell him. Make his name known by hyping what he's been showing everybody for years. He wants to be an artist who will be remembered, right? Then make it known that he is a singer worthy of that.

You are correct, anon, some DY stans try to make him a victim. And you can see it with every neo. Haechan's stans, Taeyong's stans even.

I wonder if it's a habit supported by the environment on socmed. "I'm this and this, you should pity me". "This idol is mistreated, you should love him". The underog is a very popular narrative among solo stans. Go to comment section under Everglow MVs and everyone complain about Onda having no lines. (g)Idle - it's Shuchua. I learnt their names before recognising their faces or knowing the names of the groups' centres.

I've once read a sentence from a psychiatrist describing this "If I'm not suffering, what else can I do? (to fill my life with a meaning)".

You know, I'm very new to the cancel culture (well, it gained momentum just a few years ago), so I'm still wrapping my mind around it. I come from a nation that is very envious of others (the kind of people burning the house of the well-off villager, you better not show your achievements even to your friends) and I still don't get the psychology, heh. So I watch videos with POV of people more deeply in kpop fandoms, who have reactive characters as well. And one of the explanations of this super protectiveness is the cancel culture. Because an idol can be dragged down for sneezing, fans get very sensitive and overprotective. They get into this "war" and "gatekeeping" mindset. And I guess it's hard to switch? To imagine another way of support, that is not ratings. It becomes the way you play your supportive role in a fandom? The culture the new kpop fans are introduced into?

I might be wrong, but I suppose Do's kfans are more "grounded in reality". Because Doyoung grounds his fans to reality in his lives. And such words get across in a spoken word out of the idol's mouth better than translated in a twit. Do constantly insists on wanting an "admirer-singer" relationship, not stans (I mean, he mocks Jae's stans). He calls NCTzens as friends of NCT, people to go on a life journey with (let's do our best surviving in this harsh world and cheer each other on).

Respect is owned, not demanded. The more doiezens hype the pity party, the less Do will be liked. This behaviour deters possible new fans, not attracts. Do wrote a page in kpop fanservice history with his MAW waist reveal, and the fans failed to make him trend.

Maple RECOMMENDATION time

Today I'm going to be talking about a group called UNIQ.

They are a group that I've loved ever since I got into Kpop and just recently I have gotten into their music again.

Background

So Uniq is a Chinese Korean boy group who debuted in 2014. They are apart of the company Yuehua entertainment, who also hosts the popular girl group, Everglow.

Originally Yuehua was purely Chinese which was why this group was considered a Korean-Chinese boy group. They had 3 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. At their peak, they were really popular in China, but also promoted in Korea

FUN FACT: these boys were also training as a third team in YG entertainments survival show. A show which also included groups such as WINNER and iKon. However, for unknown reasons, they didnt join and debuted a year after WINNER.

Their debut song was "Falling in Love" (which is a BOMB debut if I do say so myself) and they have both a Chinese and Korean version of it. A year later they came back with the title track to their first album, "EOEO".

This comeback was their most successful and could have made way for more comebacks in the future and a eventual boom of popularity for them.

They did have some recent singles released in 2018-2019 but shortly after 2019 was when activity and promotions stopped.

HOWEVER

There wasn't any word of the group disbanding, so to this day they are still considered an active group despite their inactivity (lolol see what I did there?)

Their members now focus solely on solo activities and promotions in all fields (I'm on FIRE today). Such as acting, music, and modeling.

There are 5 members in total, 2 Korean and 3 Chinese as stated above. Each member is fluent in Chinese and Korean, which no doubt was useful considering their promotions in those two countries.

In 2017 he was a part of a competition called "Rap of China". He was able to pass four rounds, but was unable to get into the finals ):

Since then he has ventured into acting and released a few solo EPs. Since he's a songwriter (after all he did write those two title tracks for his group), he's also written a few songs for Uniqs junior group, NEXT.

In 2019 he participated in a survival show called "All For One" and was able to debut with the group New Storm. Their single is "Get High" and is pretty good, so check them out!

Nowadays he is more or less active with the group, but I haven't heard much from him.

Kim Sungjoo

Main vocalist (with the voice of an ANGEL I'm telling you)

He can speak Japanese

Sungjoo isn't really active as a singer much nowadays, even though he has a solo song in Chinese. Instead, he's had more activity in the acting industry.

In 2017 he played a minor role in the drama "A Liar and His Lover" (one of my personal favorites). And in 2018 he played a hacker in "My Secret Terrius".

He enlisted in for mandatory service in the military in 2020, so now he is currently serving his time there. He won't really be active much until 2022 when he is discharged. (And yes that breaks my heart 💔)

He ALSO has participated in a survival program in 2019, called "Idol Producer 2" (aka Youth With You, which is the same survival show Lisa is currently a trainer for now).

Due to his popularity and SKILLZ he was able to debut in first position with the group UNINE. He was their leader, main vocalist, center, sub rapper, lead dancer, and face of the group.

Like I said...

SKILLZ.

Sadly though, UNINE has since disbanded in October of last year, only a year after their initial contract.

Nowadays he has very subtle activities, mainly appearing on variety shows and stuff in China.

2016, he debuted as a soloist as well as producing many songs for c-pop, survival shows, and k-pop groups (such as Super Junior).

In 2019 he joined the last season of the Produce X 101 and ranked 5th overall. Thus, he was able to debut with X1. Their debut song "Flash" (which was a TOTAL bop btw) was sadly their only single and they disbanded shortly afterward.

Nowadays, he is active mainly in Korea under his solo name, WOODZ. I suggest you check out his stuff they are SO good and truly underrated.

He can be considered the most famous out of the group, most likely due to his role in the historical Chinese drama, "The Untamed" as one of the lead roles (let's be honest, most of yall know him from this...plus he's HAWT af) which was released in 2019.

A year earlier, however, he was a dance mentor for the Chinese version of Produce 101 (I swear all of them appearing on survival shows :,).

Last year, his team won on the show "Street Dance of China" where he was a fellow mentor alongside Lay (EXO) and Jackson (GOT7).

He is ALSO the MC on a popular Chinese show called "Day Day Up".

He is the one with the largest popularity and fan base. He's won multiple awards for his popularity and high respect towards him.

So you're probably wondering why I'm gushing over them, it's just that I really wish they could come back as a group. I really miss them and their songs are still SO GOOD even after all these years. They are one of those groups where they never die out, I guess I just wish they had more of a chance to shine in the spotlight.

Who knows? If we bring enough exposure to them, maybe Yuehua will organize a comeback. I know that they will really appreciate the chance to sing together again.

I prefer doing things on my own, I'm not really a team player. Furthermore, I don't like sharing the spotlight and I want to have it all to myself (yes, I sound like a bitch, I'm aware). However, for positions I'd say main vocalist, lead dancer and rapper. I love doing all these things too much to give any of them up :')) I started dancing when I was 5 years old, then I've been having vocal lessons ever since I was 8 years old and apparently my fam, friends, classmates (even my ex lmao) think I'm good at rapping, so I'd love to try that and learn how I could get better at it (because I don't really have confidence in my "rap skills" yet)!!~

The variety show master? etc): uuuh, I have no idea :')) I think I'd be the emotional support or something like that, maybe the mom then? When you first started getting into kpop, were the members who are your age that were debuting around the time in hyung/unnie line or dongsaeng line?): I guess older line? However, during the time I got into kpop the idols my age belonged rather to the younger members, so I'd say somewhere in the middle~ (am I allowed to say that? :'))

Leader or nah? (Need help deciding? See below): I'm always afraid of voicing my opinions in a group because I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable or decide on something someone doesn't agree with because I want everyone to be happy, so I usually hold back and let others decide but I think I could be a leader since I like to make my own decisions and like I said, I'm quite headstrong and do have a good(???) sense of responsibility. But with being a leader there comes a lot of pressure and idk if I could hold that up^^"

wickymicky’s Top Ten Kpop Songs of 2020

2: Weeekly - Tag Me (@Me)

This song sort of came out of nowhere for me. Like with a lot of other rookie groups, I had heard of them here and there before their debut, but to be honest, I wasn’t that interested. It’s kind of hard for me to get super excited for a debut before it happens anyway, because obviously I don’t have a lot to go on and can’t know what to expect, lol. I had heard that there’s a member who is a big fan of Loona and her bias is Olivia Hye and that made me sort of interested, but on the other hand I saw that they were all pretty young, with their oldest member being 19, so I wasn’t expecting to stan them. I figured I would check it out at some point, but I wasn’t gonna listen to the song a million times on the release day or anything lol.

But... oops! This song is amazing. It’s basically everything I could ever want in a song. I’ve joked that it’s kind of the successor to last year’s Picky Picky by Weki Meki (which is, incidentally, my favorite kpop song), and I think that’s kinda true lol. It even has a similar kind of repetition of a chant (hanbeon tteumyeon sugunsugun nalli naneun timeline- which reminds me of like it don’t like it love it don’t want it-). It also has a school concept, which is usually something that puts me off of a song, but it doesn’t feel like the standard “school concept”. Both Tag Me and Picky Picky are like reinventions or subversions of the tropes you would associate with that concept, and it’s refreshing. Anyway, just comparing to another song does it a disservice. When I first heard it, a week had already passed since the time it came out, I was late lol, and I thought I would just be checking out something that would make me say “Yeah that was alright I guess, idk”. I expected that I’d listen to it once or twice and move on, and it wouldn’t matter much that I was late by a week. But, I ended up regretting that I didn’t check it out immediately, because this song sorta took over my life. 

It’s so catchy. Pretty much every single part of it is catchy. There isn’t a part of this song that I don’t love. It has so much energy, it really doesn’t slow down for its entire runtime. Okay, it obviously does slow down during the bridge, but listen to the guitar in that part! It keeps the momentum really going strong, so that even when things thin out and the bridge vocals come in, there hasnt been any momentum that’s lost. Honestly I think that’s my favorite part of the song. The guitar throughout this song just sounds so crisp and clean, and the bridge really puts a spotlight on that sound. I love the way it builds back up to the final chorus too. Every bridge in every kpop song does that haha, but it’s just so masterfully done here. It’s such a well written song! Even the rap break, which can really make or break a song, is flawless. In fact that’s one of the first things that really caught my attention. Monday’s delivery of her lines is so... like, she’s not gonna be lauded as one of the best rappers in kpop or anything lol, but that section does have a lot more personality than most others in recent girl group songs. And she’s not even the group’s main rapper, she’s the main vocalist!

And if I can talk about the group itself for a second, I have to say that the number one thing that draws me to this group is their potential. They’re great dancers, their vocal line is promising, but the thing that strikes me the most... is Jiyoon. They’ve released ten songs so far, and Jiyoon has written four of them. One of the ones she wrote was My Earth, which they promoted alongside Zig Zag, and that makes me wonder if their company is setting her up to be the group’s main composer one day. They literally just debuted. You basically never see girl groups having members participate in songwriting this early in their career, especially not at the age of only 18. They’re letting Jiyoon prove herself very very very early, and I think that’s a sign of things to come. Just wait and see, keep an eye on this group lol. It’ll be interesting.

Anyway, I saw a youtube comment saying that this song is “very kpop”, which I think is a great way to look at it. Tag Me really is pretty much everything I love about kpop. It’s a much needed breath of fresh air, this whole group is. Weeekly are my pick for Rookie of the Year, and Tag Me was almost my pick for Song of the Year. I’m very excited to see what this group does in 2021, I have high expectations lol

If you want to hear something different in every comeback, trust (G)I-DLE. “Uh Oh” is probably the most different song within the rest in this list, and I truly loved the retro-concept worked in it. Beat is sickening, choreography is good, looks are great and the girls all shine (ok maybe Shuhua deserved better but she is lowkey improving now). If you want to listen to a great retro-inspired k-pop track, Uh Oh is the one.

9.  Red Velvet (레드벨벳) - 짐살라빔 (Zimzalabim)

Release Date: 06/19

Album: The ReVe Festival: Day 1

This year was a slow year for Red Velvet. Kinda wished they had a hit because I truly think they got everything to be the nation’s girl-group. Still, I appreciate they remain loyal to their roots, and they are still allowed to experiment with their music. “Zimzalabim” is, literally, crazy. The chorus is insane, to the point that I say it every time I have an exam as some sort of black magic ritual, but to be completely honest, I don’t know how to describe the instrumentals in this song. It’s a mix of everything, and I’m not lying when I declare that statement. If you wanna feel like on a rollercoaster, listen to it and you’ll know.

8.  청하  CHUNG HA - Snapping

Release Date: 06/24

Album: Flourishing - EP

“Snapping” has the potential to be my favourite song from Chungha, but I still need time to see if it ages well. Although I can confirm this is her best MV to date; huge budget and amazing quality, with incredible work from the director. The song has a mysterious vibe all thought it and great main-choreography; which is amazing because it’s sassy and rememberable. You can always trust Chungha when it comes to point-main dances. This song is just another proof of how much she’s worthy of your attention, and how amazing she is as a performer.

7.  EVERGLOW (에버글로우) - Adios

Release Date: 08/19

Album: Hush - EP

As much as I see the resemble with BLACKPINK’s Kill This Love, I truly believe Adios shines for its own colours. This anthem-like track made them get their first music show win, but also put them into the spotlight for a growing-international fanbase; another right step in this k-pop industry as rookie beasts (and not from the Big 3). Huge EDM-drop in the chorus, which I found myself liking it even if we are not in 2010 anymore; Adios is fierce and incredible, showing a more dangerous side of them.

6.  (여자)아이들((G)I-DLE) - Senorita

Release Date: 02/26

Album: I Made - EP

(G)I-DLE became one of my favourite girl groups ever, in just one year. They are self-produced, they write their own lyrics, and they are not scared of being versatile and experiment with new concepts and genres. “Senorita” (yeah apparently, they don’t know the “ñ”) is a latin-influenced track with a little bit of tango in its verses; cute choreography and amazing aesthetics in the MV. The performances of this song are sickening; with an incredible live band helping them with the track, I will never be tired of saying that these girls are a threat.

so who are the the IOI members who maintained the most popularity? like definitely Chungha, obviously, but then like idk... Kyulkyung seems pretty popular despite Pristin being a mess and probably defunct, Sejeong seems popular, Mina too, isnt Mina hosting one of those music shows? or did for a while anyway? I don’t know much about Somi but isnt she debuting as a solo artist soon or something? uh idr cause i only know about the IOI members who went on to be in groups that i like lol

it makes me wonder about Izone... they’re gonna be a group for like twice as long as IOI was a thing, which gives all of them more time in the spotlight so the popularity they accrue might last longer post-Izone? who knows. I mean like Sakura was already famous so she’ll be fine. I just can’t imagine a world where Chaeyeon doesnt have a super successful career after Izone, it’s frankly a tragedy that she wasnt already in a huge group or something lol. her younger sister is all set for years to come cause she’s in a JYP girl group, like even if you dont like their music you know who Itzy is lol, the name recognition is hard to beat. and that’s Chaeyeon’s younger sister lol... so Chaeyeon is like that but with even more experience and charisma. Well idk, i dont know enough about Chaeryeong to be honest, but Chaeyeon just oooooozes talent. it’s impossible to watch any clip of her performing and not go “how the FUCK was she not already super successful”. is she the best dancer in the new generation of kpop girl groups? probably tbh. 

You know, a lot of the post-IOI groups contain multiple members because they were part of the same company. I can see that happening with Izone too. Eunbi and Chaewon are both part of Woollim, and Wonyoung and Yujin are both part of Starship. It’s possible that some of the members will leave their companies and join one of their fellow member’s companies too, such as Hyewon whose company doesnt have any groups and seems pretty small. There were plenty of trainees on Produce 48 who were in the same companies as the Izone members, so maybe the members will join groups with those trainees? That’s a bit harder to look up and I don’t feel like doing that lmao, I dont remember any notable names... the only things I remember are: 

1: that Yena is in Yue Hua with Sihyeon and Yiren and seemed pretty close to them, maybe just as close as those two are with each other, and its possible that she could be added to Everglow as a rapper or something. she’s pretty goofy and at first i didnt know if that would fit the Everglow vibe but... Yena looks really cool in Violeta, and Everglow has Onda who a ray of sunshine, so it doesnt matter haha Yena would fit in just fine. 

and 2: that Yuri is in Stone with Gyuri, Sian, and that other person who was on Idol School (also by the way apparently Onda was on that too under her real name lmao huh) whose name I dont remember (the one who talked about this being her last chance or something, idr). and like I guess I could see something happening with those two trainees and Yuri, but honestly idk. obviously tho Yuri isnt gonna be added to Fromis 9 lol

I also wonder what’s gonna come of the Japanese members. are they just gonna go back to AKB48? that seems like a huge step down lol, especially since some of the Japanese trainees who just barely didnt make the final lineup are currently pursuing careers in Korea. I could see them joining some of those agencies and stuff, and being in groups with the other members maybe, especially Sakura and Chaeyeon cause I know they’re close. I also know that Hitomi was pretty unknown in Japan, and while I’m sure that wouldn’t be the case anymore, still, she might be much more well known in Korea. 

I wonder if any of them would go solo, and if so I wonder who. Sakura has the name recognition but honestly, no offense, I don’t think she’d be a good solo artist lmao. Eunbi has a shot because she’s the oldest, but then what about that potential group with Chaewon? who knows. 

I’ve seen stuff about Izone saying that when their contract is up, there will be an option to renew, and that’s also a possibility. they might just stay Izone, especially after being together that long. However I don’t know how likely that is, just because I know how businesses work lol. If this was a purely artistic endeavor then maybe they would stay a group, but there’s a lot of money and like 10 different companies involved, so it’s not likely.
