Researchers and monster hunters are gathering in the United Kingdom's Scottish Highlands this weekend to look for the eternally elusive Loch Ness Monster, the biggest search for the legendary beast in more than 50 years.

Somewhere beneath the shimmering surface of Loch Ness lies Nessie, the legendary sea beast whose reputation spans nearly 1,500 years — at least, that's what monster hunters and Nessie enthusiasts from around the world hope to prove Saturday and Sunday.

The Loch Ness Centre and the research group Loch Ness Exploration are asking all aspiring monster hunters to join in on the biggest search since 1972.

"Our purpose is to observe, record and study the natural behaviour of the Loch and phenomena that may be more challenging to explain," the Loch Ness Exploration Facebook page reads.

"If you believe that the Loch Ness Monster exists then we invite you to join the search, we equally invite you to support the study of the Loch and the natural behaviour of the elements that may be the root cause of these strange reports from Loch Ness."

Investigators are breaking out all sorts of technology, including surveying equipment the Loch Ness Centre says has never been used on the freshwater lake before.

Drones with infrared cameras will fly over the lake and a hydrophone will be used under the surface to detect "Nessie-like calls," the Centre says.

Volunteers will also participate in a large surface watch of the loch, scanning the surface for any irregularities.

However, due to an "overwhelming demand" from enthusiasts, the group is no longer accepting applicants hoping to participate in person.

But the Loch Ness Centre says those still eager to participate can do so virtually through a livestream.

At 22 square miles and with a maximum depth of 788 feet, Loch Ness is Great Britain's largest lake by volume and second-largest by surface area, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Though the first written accounts of a monster are attributed to the Irish monk Saint Columba's encounter in 565 A.D., reports of a creature in the lake are depicted in ancient stone carvings found in the area.

But the legend of a monster lurking in the loch didn't garner greater attention until April of 1933, when a couple driving along the newly built road around the lake saw an animal they compared to a "dragon or prehistoric monster," according to the Scottish Maritime Museum.

More sightings soon followed, and big game hunter Marmaduke Wetherell was commissioned to track the monster down in December of 1933.

He said he found large tracks along the shoreline, but zoologists at the Natural History Museum debunked the tracks.

The following year was when English physician Robert Wilson took a photo, now known as the "Surgeon's Photograph," which appeared to show Nessie's head atop a long slender neck poking out of the water.

The picture was printed in the Daily Mail and the Loch Ness Monster was thrust into international stardom.

One of the participants in that search confessed on his deathbed that the picture was staged, according to the Daily Mail.

The Loch Ness Centre says there have been more than 1,140 official Nessie sightings.

Paul Nixon, the Centre's general manager, said he's excited to see what turns up after the waters are searched like never before over weekend.

"We are guardians of this unique story," Nixon said.

"And as well as investing in creating an unforgettable experience for visitors, we are committed to helping continue the search and unveil the mysteries that lie underneath the waters of the famous Loch."

Mini-rant time:

I've come across a couple of comments describing Nomad in this story as "subby," which I have to say, I consider wildly untrue.

He's hyper-sensitive, that's for sure, and he's inexperienced, yes. Being starved for touch doesn't automatically make you submissive, though. In my opinion, that only makes Steve more responsive during intimacy and sex.

We know--or we should know--that real doms are getting pleasure and satisfaction from the pleasure of their partner while exercising the most control over the 'scene' between the two (or more) partners.

That and Hideout!Steve are the same picture to me. At least, I'm not saying he's a dom-Dom, like a practicing and negotiated dominant, but he ain't being submissive, folks, as far as I'm concerned. He's learning, he's exploring, and he's coming into his own. That's all.

Mini-rant over! (No one is wrong in their interpretation of him, by the way. I just wanted to explain the headspace I am writing him from.)

He likes skin-to-skin contact. He doesn't care if things get messy. He has no issue with bodily fluids or functions. If you tell him to do something or want to try something, he's game.

He loves to pamper you with soothing back and foot rubs, but he doesn't fetishize any part of that except your pleased (or aroused) facial expressions (and soft noises of contentment).

What else...

The breath play. Oh boy! Probably not as scandalous as you think it might be, but he smothers his sounds in the pillows and tries to be super quiet long enough that Steve is somewhat reliant on limited oxygen before he comes. Of course, he never articulates that, so you found out very slowly and almost by accident.

Since he's so sensitive already, there isn't enough time to distinguish that anything specific might work him up to climax more/faster, but as he gains endurance, he starts to bury his face in your skin (chest, shoulder, or cunt) and remain cut off from air until his end.

Once, when he's holding you up, no support of a wall or anything behind you, and really going at it, your legs wrapped around his waist and your arms behind his neck, you're both so sweaty that you slip.

What happens is your one hand catches the back of his neck and the other just latches onto his throat because he is frantically thrusting up into you with his grip spreading your ass. Normally, he'd have one hand to stabilize your back, but instead, he groans something fierce, and all you can do is hold on.

That, my friends, is when you hear Steve Rogers growl 'fuck' loudly for the first time. You'd've apologized if he didn't kiss you so sloppily and sooooo greedily afterward. Let's just say that was a good hint that he might enjoy just a little choking...

Hmm, and I suppose I should mention that the gif above was chosen because eventually when Steve can be more open with you, we find out he does have a bit of a thing for wearing the uniform during sex. Not all the time, but that holds a special meaning because for just a moment, his work-life and his private-life aren't partitioned away from each other.

•Yui grew up so sheltered, she barley saw anything in Japan X-X. So I think she should visit Mt. Fuji first, you know, get to know see the main attraction of her country. She definitely has dreams to travel the world tho.

•Shu does NOT travel. Too much effort. But if he did I think somewhere very secluded. I really like the Idea of him in Greenland, but it might bring back some traumatic memories… (the girls that get it, get it). So maybe and Icelandic Island, or somewhere in the Scottish highlands (can someone please draw Shu chilling with Nessie X-X).

•Reiji is fluid in German so I think he should visit the alps, but the Austrian ones. With all due respect I don’t think my man can handle north Germany X-X (as a German who’s das lives in north Germany, but grew up in the south. I know). I also have a headcanon, that Reiji is very good at skiing. Not sure if he can understand Austrian alp dialect (my grandmas from there so again. I know) but I believe in him

•Ayato would probably be somewhere warme. To do all the water sports and stuff. I really like the Idea of him in Mexico

•Kanato CAN’T go anywhere too warm or sunny. I think Switzerland, the mother of chocolate (let’s not talk about where chocolate is ACTUALLY from). Swiss chocolate just hits different

•Laito goes to Greece. It’s just right.

•Subaru is also not a travel man, but I like him in either the Netherlands or New Zealand. I can’t explain it just feels right

•Ruki would probably go somewhere in the Caucasus area, like turkey or Armenia (yes I know turkey isn’t actually Caucasus area, but I forgot the English word for it). Like I totally think he would explore the remains of Troy (if it really was troy) and go to archeological sights. I also like the idea of him in west Africa for the same reason.

•Yuma would go to a small village in Calabria (I hope that’s also what it’s called in English, but anyways it’s in south Italy). He would have his own little garden there and gets along great with the locals, despite not speaking a word of Italien.

•Kou has traveled the world, since yk he’s famous. So I think he’d go on a wellness retreat on a mountain in Nepal, or to live with yaks in Mongolia.

•Azusa would either go to the middle of the Saharan desert or to Siberia. No in between. I like him more in Siberia tho. Fun fact: my fathers from a little city in the very VERY west of Siberia, and I’d just think it’s cute if he went there :3 (I’ve literally never been there, even tho I’d really like to go. I just know my dad was born there)

•The Tsukinamis travel together. No other option. If it were up to Carla (which it mostly is) they take a tour around Europe. If it were up to Shin, they’d go somewhere tropical, and very much not Europe, like maybe Kongo or somewhere in South America.

•Kino goes to Korea. Again I can’t explain it, it just makes sense. I won’t specify which Korea… because he would just go to both

i think cryptids are teenage girls. constantly made fun of for what they are, while obsessively observed and judged for factors they cannot control. something that no one wants to admit is real and has complex feelings, and can be hurt by the things you say about them. i think nessie hides at the bottom of her lake because shes scared of how we would react to her patchwork skin, or mismatched flippers. i can so easily picture nessie, spending hours trying again and again to move like the fresh water fish in her lake, but being unable too. i think she looks at their beautifully reflective scales and cries when she is reminded of all of her imperfections. think about bigfoot is watching all of us explore her woods, hiding from the people she finds wonderously beautiful. she feels too big, too hairy, too loud, too bossy, too shy, too outspoken, too much, too monstrous to reach out and join everyone who loves her. what if the chupacabra sucks the blood of goats, because her friends told her it would rejuvenate her skin, and stop her break outs. she hides from us, and only lets us see whats left after shes done, because shes worried about how we would judge her for her limp greasy hair. its easier to appear to be a blood sucking monster, than it is to be a girl whos struggling with being alive and changing. mothman, wearing all black with big red eyes, watches out for us and warns us of dangers we are about to face. but were too busy calling her overly emotional, hysterical, and a bitch to realize. we'd sooner tell her everything she feels is a phase than realize what she has a bit of truth hidden inside. i think about all the werewolves, hidden in plain sight, obscuring everything about herself to make sure she wont be targeted at school. carefully plucking every hair out of place, spending hours in front of the mirror shaving every inch of her body just so she can put on her clothes and look like everyone else. the jersy devil screams, not because she wants us to be afraid, but because shes afraid of herself. shes scared of what she has become, and what it means for her future. shes scared of the way shes going to be treated because of the way she looks, and she weeps because of it.

i think cryptids are teenage girls, and we refuse to take them seriously because of that. because what use does a teenage girl have for the world? after all, shes just a boy crazy girl, too obsessed with herself and how she looks, to realize whats going on outside of her phone.

I love that post that's going around that's pointing out the inconsistencies in the writing of Rosalie's character, and I like how it inspires us to explore more of the dissonance in her behavior. Naturally, this all leads back to the context of who wrote her. I've said this before in a past, long buried post that I can't find in my search, but I'll repeat it because it at least influences why Rosalie was written to be a fierce protector of Bella's choice to have Nessie (as long as it went with her agenda, of course). Conservative women, who are overwhelmingly pro-life and pro-birth-regardless-of-circumstance, actually propogandize their anti-abortion agenda by framing themselves as the defenders of women who want to have children (and the unborn ofc) against the liberal pro-choice crazed feminists who supposedly want to force these aspiring mothers to undergo abortions and destroy the Godly nuclear family. To people not raised in a conservative environment, I'm aware this must sound nuts, but it is the way these people think. Notice how they themselves flip the labels on their head, so that they seem to embody the right of choice (revealing that they think it is the duty but also the desire of all women to want to be moms) even when they are in fact taking away any choice in choosing to terminate a pregnancy.

The post mentioned also talks about more aspects of her character than just what happened in Breaking Dawn - I cherry picked a specific detail above - but I really do like how it reveals Stephenie's own bias and warring purposes for her characters. Rosalie is meant to be the Mean Girl Bombshell Blonde type, so naturally she has to chafe with Bella and be against her life choices (but also be jealous of her) which manifests as Rosalie wanting Bella to stay human and acting cold to her most of the time. Rosalie is also being punished (twilight saga expert panlight has discussed many a time how SMeyer unconsciously punishes the characters who stand in the way of Edward and Bella's happily ever after within the narrative), so she can't have what all women SHOULD want in the eyes of women like Stephenie - children. A traditional, nuclear family. When Bella gets pregnant, Rosalie's emphasis on choice becomes her redemption - sure her motives are selfish - because now she's on the same side as what Bella desires, so she's going to get what she wants, which is a child in her life. Renesmee.

Rosalie is well known for preaching about the importance of choice, but that doesn't mean that she supports whatever others - in this case, Bella - decide. Rose defending Bella's decision in keeping the fetus and protecting her from a forced abortion (there's so much to be talked about with Bella's whole "I don't want just any baby, I want this baby" thought process but that's for another day), while also pushing Bella to stay human ("You have a choice. I didn't. None of us did. But you're choosing wrong.") showcases this.

That post was right, all in all. There is a LOT of cognitive dissonance with regards to the way Rose is written on Stephenie's side of things. People and their personal ideals don't always align with the behavior that they exhibit, but Rose is a character written by a not-all-that-self-aware author. Rosalie wasn't meant to be that complex of a character, she just had a role to fill. Her complexity was accidental, and now she illustrates a dissonant character that brings more enrichment to the story than the main character herself.

Anyways, I just wanted to ramble a bit about a great post that got me thinking. Send it to me if anyone happens on it again, please!

I love how the entire fandom agrees that "Under Suspicion" is a low point of the show's writing... It really exposes the lack of continuity that the show suffers from in some aspects. It's a kids show, of course, and the main focus appears to be on creating episodes that can somewhat work on their own, but as a fan it feels like such a weak spot. (Less severe examples of this are Nessie's soccer shoes that she throws into the well during the Oracle episode and that end up magically reappearing?) If I had to do a rewrite of the show, I would definitely pay more attention to the development of the relationship between the bunch and also between the bunch and the Siegers -- the whole "almost murder + kidnapping" thing also gets adressed way too little in my opinion. (As somebody pointed out: They see each other every day in school. What would that feel like???) Under suspicion could easily be improved by maybe showing Kong show some regret or even try to push back again's Michi's + Paul-Moritz' idea. Which could be a really interesting way to juxtapose the mostly healthy and fun found family/friend group vibes of the bunch with a friend group where the loyalty to one another gets abused in order to bully other people -- similarly to Markus and Deniz, whose "betrayal" of the bunch meant loneliness and alienation, Kong would also face exile from his established friend group if he turned against Michi. Ultimately, the Sieger are kind of the evil version of the Soccer Bunch, and I feel like there could have been more exploration of that idea. I could also get into how there is an element of similarity between Leon and Michi in that they both are willing to go to great lengths to show their superiority. Just that Leon is obviously less of a morally bankrupt and criminal asshole about it.

Haha, I agree with everything you said. Either they could have changed the episode with Kong trying to be a “Good guy” while also being victimized by peer pressure, or just changed the episode’s plot completely. I mean, since it was one of Vanessa’s narratives, they could have taken the opportunity to make a redemption arc between her and Natasha? Even though I like her and Markus, it’s a bit weird that he started dating the girl who bullied his friend even though she didn’t apologize for her past behavior. Giving Vanessa a female friend would also be a good character development. But no, the writers couldn’t think of that, and gave us this instead.

Like first you kill her mom (JULIA NOOO) and erase her YEARS of history growing up around diana (the thing that actually made her villain turn [if you can call it that w the level of manipulation involved] interesting and fucking heartbreaking) for some shitty "oh I saved you we were friends" run of the mill whatever. Then to use that and say Nessie had a crush on her OWN SISTER (Diana, so like informally adopted, but still 😡) now????

And then they took away her curls and made her a redhead but not even the realistic kind. DC SHE DOESNT LOOK LIKE THAT

It just makes me so mad. Freaking guys. They could have used another name like oh my god. She's not even the first silver swan why the fuck would they do that if they're not going to explore her history w diana (which she no longer has!!!!) or how intensely fucked up everything got for her. What is even the fucking point of this then other to drag a main character of the ww supporting cast through the mud again for genuinely no reason. On April 23rd 2001, Jan Sundberg, an explorer specialising in unusual species, arrived at Loch Ness in a bid to trap the legendary monster.

Sundberg believed that Nessie was “a large type of eel” and could be found using sonar technology and trapped in a net, just like a regular eel. He put together a team which arrived in Scotland with the latest high tech equipment, hoping to prove the monster’s existence with a DNA sample. It was known as Operation Cleansweep.

The mission proved to be unsuccessful and Sundberg left the loch disappointed, he would later head to seek out  Ireland’s very own version of the Loch Ness monster on Lough Ree. 

Although recorded sightings of a monster in the loch stretch back to the days of St Columba, the public obsession with Nessie really began with a sighting in 1933 by the late John and Donaldina Mackay.

Ever since thousands of would be monster hunters have flocked to the loch in the hope of finding evidence of Nessie and there have been hundreds of accounts of those claiming to have seen the beast in the waters of the loch.

Pollo had been relaxing in the strawberry fields, spending some quality time with his twin sister. They’d barely seen each other lately. With them both having partners, quests, and just living life in general, he’d missed his Natasha more than anything. He’d tolet her everything. How he planned to propose to Holly within a few weeks after the twins reached their 21st birthday. How he wanted to get everyone together for a family trip to go to Scotland and see their mothers relatives. To take their partners, friends, stepfather and little half brother to the magical land for a break.

“I’m up for it.” Natasha agrees instantly, “I know Pa and Jaime would love it. To feel close to mum. And Jasmine, Annabeth and Holly would love to get out the States and explore.”

“Maybe Percy could go in Loch Ness and see if Nessie exists.” Pollo bumps his shoulder against hers, playfully. He wonders, hopes, that Natasha and Percy’s relationship was going well like his and Holly’s. Then again if it hadn’t, they wouldn’t be together. Perhaps they were soulmates after all.

“Pollo! There you are!” Hearing Holly’s call had the twins jump.

“What’s wrong?” They demand simultaneously, the Scottish twins of Apollo worrying. Was it Jasmine? Will? Gabby? Because it was certainly not book related. Pollo could tell when it revolved her beloved books, specifically the Hunger Games.

From what I see, in Breaking Dawn, imprinting was SMeyer’s way of tying everything up in a neat little bow. Ended the possibility of a love triangle, kept Jacob in the story, and Renesmee will grow up and have a man just waiting to marry her (ick but moving on). Everyone gets a happy little love story and everyone is technically immortal so they get a happy forever after.

But now that I know imprinting was in Forever Dawn, I’m wondering why it was there in the first place. I can see her keeping it to the everything up well, but I’m wondering what the original thought process was, as Jacob was just a character who had one role and that was to push the plot. So why include him?

My take is that she was already in the planning phase of New Moon, so Jacob may have been on her mind. She knew it would always be Edward, but maybe she wanted that guarantee that no one could claim that Jacob would imprint on Bella. Interested to hear your take on why it happened in Forever Dawn.

That's the issue, right? What's the point of the imprint in Forever Dawn?

It's not to tie up a love-triangle; there isn't one. Jacob is just a family friend with a minor crush. With no New Moon, he and Bella never grew close.

It's not to keep the Cullens in Forks; Jacob only sees Renesmee and imprints on her at Charlie's house when Bella is visiting. So Charlie is still in Bella's life without Jacob being involved at all, unlike in Breaking Dawn.

It's not keep to the wolves from killing the vampires; as mentioned above, in Forever Dawn, Jacob only imprints weeks after Nessie is born. And the person who claims to have read Forever Dawn at the Library of Congress says the wolves knew about the pregnancy but didn't really care.

So then, what was the point?!

I guess we have to look at SM's stated inspiration for imprinting:

Imprinting was inspired by two different sources: ducklings and dragons. Imprinting actually exists in nature, but usually between parents and their offspring. I saw a nature documentary about ducklings imprinting on their moms and it always stuck with me. The other inspiration is Anne McCaffrey’s dragon books (which, if you haven’t read them, do so now! Start with Dragonflight). In her mythology, humans and dragons bond so tightly that if one of them dies, the other either suicides or goes mad. They love each other with an absolute and unreasoning love that never falters or changes. I was always captivated by this concept, and I wanted to explore that kind of life-changing and compulsory relationship.

And then this, where she mentions she always knew Jacob's "eventually happy ending."

I wrote New Moon and Eclipse after I wrote Forever Dawn, which is pretty much the rough draft of Breaking Dawn. So I always knew Bella’s destiny was with Edward, and as her relationship with Jacob evolved and deepened through the course of the middle novels, writing about it was sometimes painful. Even knowing Jacob’s eventual happy ending, it was hard to put him through all the heartbreak.

So, I mean, I don't know??? It kind of feels to me that she just liked Jacob and wanted to keep him in the story somehow, but Bella and all the Cullens were already paired off so oh hey how about the baby? Allegedly in Forever Dawn it is spelled out that imprinting is how the shapeshifters find their mates. :/

Loch Ness Monster: A Theory or Real?

The Loch Ness Monster is a modern legend that has gone by decades. The Loch Ness Monster is a creature in Scottish folklore that is said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. The legend of the Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, was born on May 2, 1933 when a couple reported to have seen an enormous creature that “was rolling and plunging on the surface.” After this reporting, the mysterious creature was brought to worldwide attention. Since the reporting in 1933, numerous sightings of the creature have been reported. In December of 1933, a man named Marmaduke Wetherell, a hunter, was sent to locate the sea serpent. Upon his search, he ended up finding large footprints. However, zoologists have later stated these footprints were not caused by any large sea serpent and were most likely created by someone.

Reports of “Nessie” actually go back as early as the sixth century AD. Adomnán wrote about some events that had happened some years prior. He wrote that a monk, Saint Columba, was staying with others in a town. There they encountered residents burying a man. The residents explained that the man was attacked and killed by a “water beast.” Saint Columba sent a follower to swim across the River Ness. There, the follower encountered the beast but when he did the sign of the cross, the beast fled. Saint Columba and his companions perceived this encounter as a miracle. 

In 1934, Robert Kenneth Wilson, captured the most iconic and well known picture (shown above) that there is of “Nessie” today. The Daily Mail even ended up printing the picture which soon sparked international interest in this sea serpent. Many people even speculated the creature was a marine reptile that went extinct over 65 million years ago. Over the next couple of years, monster hunters from all over were intrigued by this creature and many explorations were done in search of the Loch Ness Monster but nothing conclusive was found. However, British explorers’ sonars in each expedition detected some large, moving underwater objects.

In 1994, it was revealed that the most iconic picture of the Loch Ness Monster taken by Robert Kenneth Wilson ended up all just being a hoax – the “Nessie” in the picture was actually not some prehistoric marine animal but was just a plastic and wooden head that was attached to a toy submarine. 

In 2018, DNA tests were conducted using the water from Loch Ness, where the supposed Loch Ness Monster inhabits. The results ended up coming back that no prehistoric marine animal or other such large animals inhabited the water. The results however did conclude that many large eels lived in the water. After this discovery, many people started to speculate what people were actually seeing was not some prehistoric creature but just some large oversized eel. To date, there has been no proof of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster. Even with no evidence of this creature, people have still yet to not believe. Steve Feltham, a man who spent three decades watching the Loch Ness for any sighting of the Loch Ness Monster and even kept up a blog. After the joke to raid Area 51, another facebook event was formed – to storm Loch Ness is Scotland. The facebook event for this raid was called ‘Storm Loch Ness, Nessie can’t hide from us all.’ More than 40,000 facebook users expressed interest in joining this raid. Unlike Area 51 however, Loch Ness is open to the public.
