Wow, it really will be down to the wire.

This is the sylleblossom from FFXV. The flowers that symbolizes Nctis & Luna's love. Drawing this was a bit emotional for me because I showed the beautiful scene to my dad before he passed away and my dad never really cared for videogames but this one, he agreed it was beautiful but sad. I hope my dad found himself in a beautiful place too. 💐

“Oh. Well, if that’s so,” Tifa shrugged, sending a small smile Cloud’s way, who still stood at the back of the room. She then rounded to the front of the bar to come take Marlene from Barret.

“But daddy!” the little girl gave a purposeful whine, twisting around in Tifa’s hold to send him that particular, expectant look.

“Cheer up for daddy, honey. I promise to make up for it by reading all the bedtime stories you want tomorrow night,” Barret assured, giving her puffed cheek a gentle swipe with his finger.

That was enough to conjure a big grin onto her face, and she playfully swatted her father’s hand. “Ok, daddy. If you promise!”

“I do, my lovely,” Barret laughed in relief. “You’re always such a good girl, I wouldn’t dare disappoint.”

They both leaned in for two or three goodnight kisses before Marlene let herself be cradled against Tifa’s shoulder, waving sleepily at her daddy while she was carried off to the secret elevator. As they went down, Tifa also gave Cloud a subtle wave goodbye. His nodded response was typically brief as always.

Once they were alone, his eyes met Barret’s. The man already had his gaze focused on him.

Barret fell into a quick stride. “Well then, merc. 2000 was it?” he spoke up as he marched right past Cloud to check the front doors for the ‘closed’ sign before locking up.

“2000,” Cloud echoed in confirmation.

Barret stopped to look at him. He slowly circled Cloud with heavy steps, and ended up facing the blonde’s side. Cloud watched in silence as Barret’s good arm moved to let his fingers graze the flower still nestled into Cloud’s chest strap.

“That meant to cover up your omega scent or somethin’?” he asked, and surprisingly his tone was neutral in his inquiry. It didn’t seem like he wanted to know more beyond what he’d asked, even if the question itself was ambiguous in its goal. “’cause it might just be doing the opposite.”

“It was a gift,” Cloud stated simply before once again looking up ahead, somewhere beyond Barret.

“Found an admirer, hn? Guess that’s something only you could manage in the middle of a life-threatening mission-”

“I just bumped into this flower girl; not that it matters.” Cloud slowly blinked his eyes in tired resignation.

Oddly enough he could still hear the bubbliness of her voice, penetrating through all the surrounding gloom in the wake of their terror attack. That smile that was far too bright for such a dark and dirty part of town. With a sweet, sweet face that even Tifa’s fanboys would awe at, and surrounded by a thick fog of floral aroma, strong and pleasant enough to rival even Cloud’s. And he was often told his scent was exceptionally intense and alluring, even for an omega. Apparently it was a rather rare phenomenon that some unlucky few just had to live with - like him and that girl.

Of all the things, what in the world was she doing selling flowers? They only accentuated that burden for her. It was equal to wearing a sign on one’s forehead. Not something Cloud would ever care to understand, and yet she had seemed so unbothered by it all, so carefree.

He really hoped she wasn’t smoking those flowers.

Shaking his head, Cloud interrupted his derailing train of thought. “Told me it matches my hair or something – trust me, it was easier to just go with it. Refusing her offer proved to be a substantial hassle.”

A subtle rumble echoed from Barret’s sturdy chest. He chuckled: “Apologies for the false accusations then.” It sounded a little more mocking than apologetic, since he apparently found the unexpected turn of events ironic.

He’d been imagining some hopeless alpha declaring his undying love to Cloud in a comical display. Nonetheless, he accepted Cloud’s explanation for what it was.

He then, with just as much gentleness as a father, plucked the flower from its spot, and turned to head toward the bar with it, closely observing. His large hand held it carefully, almost like he’d held his daughter moments ago, and it still wondered Cloud how those battle calloused fingers were capable of so much more caution and tenderness than one would expect upon first glance.

“Let Marlene have it,” Cloud murmured into the silence of the room as the sound of Barret’s slow sauntering came to a halt.

The man looked over one of his broad shoulders. He studied Cloud for several seconds, his expression unreadable until a smirk tugged the corner of his lips. “She’ll love it.”  Full Chapter can be found on Ao3! :3 Let me know what you think! It’d make me so happy
