fire is an astonishingly complicated phenomenon when you're getting into the chemistry and physics of it but for narrative purposes it can be simplified to three components, each necessary and interdependent:

kinetic energy - which most of us call heat but heat means something different in thermodynamics so your physicists will gripe about it because many of them are fucking insufferable wankers - anyway vibrational kinetic energy is the most relevant mode when starting a fire but translational kinetic energy removes energy from the reaction loci and is involved in creating new ignition events

an oxidizing agent: atmospheric oxygen is the most common oxidizer and it's fine you don't need to worry about others - though if you do want to worry about it i would like to introduce the utterly terrifying antimony pentafluoride, obviously fluorine is the mondo slutty element we all know this motherfucker but we also get heavy metal to breathe, wonderful stuff antimony pentafluoride, she haunts my nightmares

finally fire must have fuel and this is where you can get super weird because oh boy does different stuff burn different

first, okay, yes, nearly all chemists start off with... nrrr mostly? subclinical pyromania? i had my junior arsonist moments but there are lots of cool things you can do in chemistry that aren't fire and we tend to get over it

anyway! when designing magic systems a lot of people forget all about the fuel

flame is not the fire! flame is the end of fire, literally soot and ashes (and gases but those hold less talismanic power while being the proximate cause of a whole lot of deaths by mundane fire since we decided to fuck around with synthetic polymers), fire lives in the dance of heat, oxidizer, and fuel

i really wanna find a place where i can just set open fires without any consequences and without damaging any wildlife cuz I love setting open fires and I wanna be able to do it regularly. like I just want to be able to see fire and set it and control how big it is cuz I love fire and need to be able to set more of them but its too dangerous. i have committed arson on accident bc of my love for fire and now I'm scared it could happen again.

- the eyes on the wings are mystra's

- the colors are based on his aurora stargazing scene

- he's based on the dream-king freyr, who takes human children in unfortunate circumstances and turns them into fairies that become "their most extraordinary selves" but can never return home. he feels guilty for intervening in their fates, but the ends justify the means to grow the power of his realm :-) he mourns the fact that humans stop dreaming (as in losing their ambitions) as they grow older

(feel like this is the type of thing god gale who's slowly becoming more like mystra would do and convince himself nooo it's completely ethical i'm being benevolent actually)

astarion

- the eyes on the yellow wings are cazador's

- one set of wings are yellow inspired by his longing for the sun

- the flowers are the same flowers on his grave, the garden star-of-Bethlehem

- he's based on the character plumeria, who's the bringer of lustful dreams and is disgusted by the humans who have such indecent desires. (she's one of the humans transformed/kidnapped into a fairy) she puts up a sensual front but hates the way people leer at her. nonetheless she must deliver those vulgar desires as dreams, doing a job she hates :-) all she wants is true compassionate love removed from lust... is this ringing a bell

Average un-symbiosed Leafwing.

There are actually two types of leafwings, variants if you will. "Living Gardens" and "Walking Plants". This post is about the Living Garden variant.

At heart, Gardens are just that, gardens. They on average look like sticks or peculiar driftwood, and throughout their life have plants growing on them. It starts young where they have the highest chances of a complete symbiosis with a plant, When a Garden first symbioses with a plant, usually only ever one species of plant for their whole lifetime (things can get messy if there's multiple species on one dragon, the plants basically fighting each other for real-estate on the dragon). Vines and trees are by far the easiest for a Garden to symbiose with, with carnivorous plants being the hardest.

Garden families have traditions of keeping the "Family plant", with each generation either symbiosing with the same plant as their parents or the same general species.
