California fast-food workers are forming a unique kind of union

Lizzet Aguilar has worked at a McDonald’s in Los Angeles for 17 years. She’s never once been given a paid day off. She’s never taken a vacation. When her husband or nine-year-old son get sick and need her to care for them—or if she gets sick herself—she has to call out and lose a day’s pay. “Es difícil,” she says: It’s difficult. Her wages are already low. She makes $16.78 per hour. “Estamos luchando día a día. Es difícil vivir en California,” says Aguilar: We live day to day. It’s difficult to live in California. But for many years she was afraid to speak up and join the Fight for 15, a national movement to raise the minimum wage that started with fast-food workers and has since seen 14 states and Washington, D.C., raise their minimum wages to $15 an hour, increasing pay for 26 million workers. Then the pandemic hit and Aguilar’s boss didn’t give workers any hand sanitizer, gloves, or even masks. Six coworkers got COVID-19. “Ese me puso a decir, ‘Basta,’” she recalls: It pushed her to say, Enough. She got involved to protect herself and her family. Now Aguilar will be part of the next evolution in the Fight for 15 movement: She and her coworkers will announce on February 9 that they are forming the California Fast Food Workers Union, which will be part of SEIU. Hundreds of workers from different fast-food companies will gather in Los Angeles to sign union cards. It’s time, Aguilar and her coworkers decided, to become more formal members of a union and pay dues. It’s a fresh start, she says, on the road toward securing bigger gains.

This is where I'd always ask to go to when my family celebrates any of my academic milestones. Also my birthdays. Also whenever they ask where I wanna eat. The meat platter are EXPENSIVE which is why I only eat here with my family. The meat quality is so good though sometimes I think its worth it if I eat here on my own coin. After I dream about being financially able to eat here, I get a wake up call. ANYWAYS. Food and service is a 10/10! Big groups get to eat at a tatami room its so cute! All the other sides we order are top tier too. Even their iced tea is delicious huhu WOULD RETURN IF I CAN AFFORD IT HAHA

Child labor violations have been on the rise in the past 10 years, and the fast-food industry is responsible for the majority of them. According to The Washington Post’s recent analysis of U.S. Labor Department data, child labor violations have increased more than threefold over the past decade, and the number of violations within food service have increased even more so. In the first nine months of 2023, franchised fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A were involved in the majority of child labor violations, per the Post’s investigation.

Diving - Scuba Dive in Costa Rica

One of the best adventurous sports in Costa Rica is scuba diving. To achieve the best experience of life one should do scuba diving at least once in their lifetime. The best places to practice diving in Costa Rica are in the Pacific.

Scuba Diving can be risky for inexperienced people. Scuba diving is mainly done for the attraction of the unattainable undersea world. It is one area of nature that mankind has not been able to fully control, we simply are not able to breathe underwater. Hence, scuba diving gives us an opportunity to be in that underwater world, even if it is just for a limited amount of time.

Of course, the underwater world is beautiful, with many people opting for scuba diving in Asia or scuba diving in the Red Sea or the Great Barrier Reef, said to be some of the world’s best scuba diving locations. The different colours and marine wildlife are so impressive in all these locations that people find themselves returning over and over again.

Diving underwater is something that has attracted mankind since they figured out that there was a living world under the seas. SCUBA is an abbreviation for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, in other words, equipment to allow us to breathe underwater.

Many people mistakenly believe that the air they breathe underwater is pure oxygen, but that would actually poison the divers! Because of the nitrogen in the compressed air, divers need to be very careful when diving to greater depths, as nitrogen narcosis can occur, which has the same effect as excessive alcohol. This is easily solved by going back up to shallower waters.

A more serious effect of nitrogen is known as Caisson’s Disease also known as decompression sickness, which is when nitrogen starts to form bubbles in the diver’s body. This is why one of the most important things to remember for divers is to never go too deep too quickly and never to go back to the surface too quickly.

The main thing to remember with scuba diving is that [you need to be safe]. Do not go diving on your own and don’t be tempted into buying diving gear and simply giving it a go without the proper training. Research some good diving schools if you want to go scuba diving.

Scuba diving is incredibly popular, so whether you want to go diving in Asia or diving in the Red Sea or anywhere else in the world, you will be able to find good diving schools in those areas. Touristic places, like diving in Sharm El Sheikh, will probably have a range of diving schools, so see if you can do some research on them before your holiday.

If you do enjoy scuba diving, there are a couple of things you can do to make it even more interesting. There are many artificial reefs, for example. These artificial reeds have been created either to restore destroyed coral or as a scientific experiment to see how coral grows and how it attracts other marine life. There are many wrecks, for example, that have been purposely sunk to create artificial reefs.

If you have nerves of steel, you may want to consider going for a dive with sharks! A cage dive with sharks can be the experience of a lifetime. You are basically enclosed in a steel cage and lowered into a shoal of shark, attracted by fish guts beforehand.

The main thing with scuba diving will always be: STAY SAFE and ENJOY.
