elliot s maggin (one of the main pre-crisis superman writers, and if you’re not familiar with him i beg you to track down some of his work) has a quora account where he answers questions about his opinions on comics and superheroes and god, i love hearing him talk about lex luthor.

a few highlights:

the idea that “no one is truly irredeemable, even the worst of villains” is frankly incredibly radical even by current day standards — grown adults couldn’t handle that shit in steven universe, a literal show for children — but it should be a core tenet of the superman mythos and that is a hill i will die on.

i love anthologies. anthologies are so sexy

#in an alternate world where im an english lit major the norton anthology of english lit is my bible #it's by no means an exhaustive overview but i really love how everything is in its neat timeline #and you get a general vibe for how literature was back then as opposed to just going in blind. u see how everything influences everything #a major (maybe a bit irrational?) fear i have is i come out of a book w superficial understanding #and while that has contributed to unfortunate reading slumps i do also like this trait of me #where i am actually focused on giving a book/period of time the respect it deserves vs just reading it flippantly #i like doing my silly little pre-read of a period of time/author before jumping into it #i don't do pre-reads for everything but there are books where i find it necessary to prime my brain for absorbing them #and anthologies are good for that #and they're also a good resource for investigating authors whose vibe sits right w u. #or for knowing the general quaintessential authors of a certain genre of lit #i also love poetry anthologies #the commentary comparing/contrasting certain authors is also rly interesting to me . ok i'll shut up now #p

#Everything Under the Moon #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #aromantic books #queer books #A really nice anthology of queer fairytales! definitely a mix of all sorts of stories. #Some were a bit forgettable (I mean I’m just not a short story person) but I really enjoyed others! I #I picked this up specifically because I heard there was an aromantic story (which I didn’t know much else about) and yeah it hit hard actua #it’s about being okay with loneliness and also centred around artists….so. it did make me cry a bit…. #I liked that a lot of them focused on platonic r/ships - most on sibling actually? I appreciate that there were a couple sapphic aces too #I will say while the illustrations are really high quality (I especially liked the naturey ones) I found a lot of them depicted the chars #as very.....disnefied? idk. thin and generic. lacking 'imperfect' features like freckles even #(when they’re described as having them) With a couple exceptions for sure - but a lot of them were a bit samey #I would have loved some authors notes or a list of the stories because I didn’t recognise which all were inspired by #(though they’re on the endpapers; just not specified which) - I did find this in a GR review tho

#fave spotting #michael craze #ben jackson #doctor who #gideon's way #1966 #boy with gun #itc #a relatively rare fave spotting! outside of his DW work‚ Mike didn't make a huge amount of appearances in cult tv‚ at least not many that #survive or are easily seen; he'd previously starred in Target Luna‚ a completely lost serial‚ but didn't return when the show carried on as #Pathfinders in Space (oddly‚ perhaps because of a change of director‚ every single returning character was recast) and beyond #there were also episodes of Dixon pf Dock Green and Armchair Theatre but these are also in all likelihood lost tv; others‚ like an ep of #Hammer's sci fi anthology Journey to the Unknown‚ are frustratingly unavailable to the average viewer (I was really hoping Network would #do something with JttU after they announced an agreement with Hammer but alas it wasn't to be) #mike would have been about 22 when filming this ep (around May '65) but was still largely playing juvenile parts as here #(his age isn't given but as a borstal runaway he's clearly intended to be a teen); this aired in feb or march '66 in most regions‚ by which #time he had presumably been cast in DW (or very near to it; he'd debut in The War Machines in June of that year) #DW would act as a sort of transition for Craze from youth parts into adult roles (i mean Ben's own age is debatable but I'd say he's surely #meant to be at least 18?). there'd be some more guest spots and a few horror films to come (he was a regular collaborator with Norman #J. Warren) but he doesn't pop up with the regularity of many other Who companions so this was a lovely little surprise (zero memory of him #being in it from when i first watched years ago)

started reading what moves the dead by T. Kingfisher and im enjoying the gender & language stuff so much and also wow her writing is so fun to read

#also coming from an anthology of work from like the 1930s-1980s it's very refreshing #no offense to older written horror its just like. i mean it's kinda slow and boring sometimes innit #which is funny cus ive seen ppl call this book and the mc boring meanwhile i think theyre so charming and fun #i went into this completely blind LOL i didnt even know this was a retelling of the house of usher #and i definitely didnt know anything abt the mc and their Gender #the language and use of pronouns thing is kinda blowing my mind im ngl this is so genius... such an interesting way to approach it

She steps closer and takes the hand Ilya offers her, the dark waves of his hair framing his face falling back to reveal angled features, the dark stubble that lines his jaw, a canine flashing as he offers her a smile that is as much of an invitation as it is a threat. “Pleasure,” he murmurs, his voice soft in the hushed quiet of the bar. His eyes are sharp as he takes her in, perceptive, and she can feel the weight of his aura against hers, testing.
