Book 20 Founding Gardeners

Dewey gave me 718 Monuments; Mausoleums, Cemeteries. Very interesting subject matter, but a paucity of books forced me to go up to 71X Civic and landscape art. That brought Andrea Wulf's Founding Gardeners. It's an astounding look at how gardening influenced politics and vice-versa during the founding days of America.

The first three presidents, George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson, were all avid gardeners and ran farms (*cough*plantations*cough*) back home even when they were in politics. Essentially wanting to get back home to his garden was a big motivator in Washington stepping down from power first at the end of the Revolutionary War and then after his second term as president. Adams and Jefferson, first best of friends, then worst of enemies, finally warm correspondents bonded and rebonded over gardens and gardening. And even fourth president James Madison retired to gardening his estate (plantation) after he retired.

The first chapter starts off with Washington in the direst of straits in the Revolutionary War, but writing to his estate manager about gardening minutia. I started to get itchy; "We know who's really doing the planting", essentially. And sure enough, 11 pages in when Washington gets home there is finally mention of the slaves doing the labor on these gardens. Now, John Adams only owned a 40 acre farm compared to the thousands -of-acres farms the 3 Virginians owned and he never owned a slave in his life. Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, were the only of the first 12 presidents not to own slaves ever. Now, Jefferson (my friends are probably groaning right now having to hear this yet again) is my lowest of the low for keeping his own children with Sally Hemings as slaves. (He freed them when he died - Thanks so much, Dad). There was a scene where Jefferson was fondly looking out on his garden where his children's children were playing, and my heart just broke thinking about what his other kids must have felt seeing their dad being a real dad to his white children. Anyway, the whole story of these gardens and their owner's devotions to them would be sweet, if it weren't horribly tainted by the fact they were using slavery to build them.

There are some cool moments in the book: the Constitutional convention was deadlocked on the issue of representation in Congress and many members took a trip to a botanic garden. The next vote had enough changed votes that they were able to pass our current system and thus pass the Constitution. The votes that changed that day were all people who had been on the botanic garden trip, likely uncoincidentally. Jefferson (boooo!) was already planning the Lewis and Clark expedition when the Louisiana Purchase came through. It was just a coincidence that we were offered sale of the land beforehand. Jefferson hoped on the off chance that Lewis might bring him home a live mastodon. The design of the White House and Washington D.C. itself is a compromise of the Federalists wanting a grander capital and Jeffersonian Democrats wanting a more modest capital city.

SHOULD YOU READ THIS BOOK: I would recommend it. It's fascinating and gives you some insight into the Founding Fathers as people. The slavery part is uncomfortable, but so is any honest account of history. The secret to British gardens of the 1790s is delightful. My only surprise was that the Royal Society didn't make an appearance in the book!

ART PROJECT: I had a grand vision of a slave as mother earth/Gaea rising out of the earth with a farm on her back, but damn, I can't even begin to draw something like that without a reference. So, I drew the only place I felt comfortable drawing, John Adams' Peacefield. The plants are made from two brushes made of a portrait of John Adams.

Myself in the Way by Turnover

ALBUM OUT 11/4/2022 In early 2020, Turnover were touring Europe fresh off a US tour for their new album, Altogether. As the pandemic caused borders to begin closing in around them, the band cut the tour short and got one of the last flights home - not knowing stages around the world would be dark for almost two years. Since 2012, the band has been touring full time, averaging 200 shows each year. In their time away from the road, the band had the opportunity to explore and deepen aspects of their lives that they hadn’t been able to in the past. “I tried to be as positive as possible about the change in my life. Instead of thinking about the things covid was taking from me I wanted to focus on what it could give me,” says singer Austin Getz. The title track of the band’s new album, Myself in the Way, speaks to this mindset. “I can’t put myself in the way of love again,” sings Getz, “I promise I’m going to go all the way with you,” is specifically about Getz getting engaged to his longtime partner, but applies to the general outlook he had toward life in lockdown. “I was living in Sebastopol, California at the time and felt like I truly lived there for the first time since I wasn’t leaving for tour. I was able to go meditate at the Zen Buddhist dojo down the road, run and bike around the hills in Sonoma county, learn about plants and gardening, take some Spanish and arboriculture classes, and get involved with the volunteer fire department. Just do a bunch of new things to challenge and inspire me in a natural way.” Turnover’s other members also used the time to deepen interests they hadn’t been able to fully explore before covid. Bass player Dan Dempsey was in New York City and responded to lockdown by spending more time practicing his visual art in drawing and painting. He painted the album’s cover during this period and developed a style that has become a central theme for the band in its current iteration. Drummer Casey Getz found work at a Virginia Beach state park as touring continued to be postponed. He was in search of and inspired by having a work-life balance different than he’d experienced since he was younger. Through this, he was able to nurture current relationships more and find new ones, something touring made much more difficult. This led to Casey playing drums with a group of longtime friends in Virginia Beach and further developing his drumming style - adding a new prowess for fluidity and improvisation through lengthy jam sessions with the group. Guitarist Nick Rayfield was focused on sharpening his guitar and piano playing and was able to devote energy to skateboarding and his retail business more than he had been able to for the last few years. This was also the band’s first album with Rayfield making songwriting contributions after touring with them for years as a live member, adding a new creative element to the songs. Over 18 months Turnover weaved these individual experiences into a collective work, recording the LP over two sessions with longtime collaborator Will Yip at Studio 4. Austin is credited, for the first time, as co-producer. “I had specific ideas for sound design on this album. I knew a lot of sounds I wanted to hear and use. We wanted everything to be able to be heard and have its own place. I was inspired by the way Magical Mystery Tour and Dark Side of the Moon sounded. We decided to go a lot wider with it and utilize panning and stereo more than we had in the past, while also wanting it to sound tighter and smaller than some of our earlier records. We were inspired by drum and bass sounds from Chic and Quincy Jones records from the 70s, so we put the drums in the control room to get them to sound smaller. We used an active pickup bass and a jazz bass to get that percussive sound from the bass so the low end wasn’t as rumbling and subby. We let the synths share some of that low end that the drums and bass gave up. Quincy's approach to arrangements were a huge inspiration in this record as well. The horn and string lines I wanted to sound like classic era disco, mixed with modern synth and vocal sounds. I had been experimenting with my own vocal styles a lot and utilized autotune and vocoder on this album almost as instruments on certain songs as a stylistic choice.” The band has always been DIY, but post pandemic they have taken that to a different level. They appreciate more than ever how lucky they are to get to be together and have fun creating things with their friends. They have found that they are usually best suited for executing their own vision, not only musically, but with all its accompaniments as well. For this album they made all their own videos in collaboration with friends and using Dempsey's drawings and paintings. Change is authentic and true to Turnover as a band and as individuals. Marissa’s 31 Nights of Halloween

Today’s movie: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

I watched this movie for the first time over the summer and I enjoyed it very much so I knew I needed to add it to this year’s list!

The second I hear Constantinople I think of that song that’s like “Istanbul was Constantinople now it’s Istanbul not Constantinople” and then the song gets sick in my head

That wig looks ridiculous on Dracula

I do not like that Winona Ryder was like 21 and Gary Oldman was like 34…it makes me feel icky

I would not want to be impaled…that just looks like an agonizing way to die

This is a time when texting would have been beneficial cause Elizabetha could just shoot Drac a text like “hey I got a letter that you’re dead is that true?” And then Drac could text back “nope I’m alive” but unfortunately this was like the 15th century so texted wouldn’t be invented for another like 600 years

Never kill yourself over a guy friends,l it’s not worth it

Like the wig is so bad that it’s distracting

I love how in so many stories like this there’s always a scene where the main person gets like seduced by someone and I just think to myself “ha I’m ace I would have been immune”

However if they knew that seduction in the traditional sense wouldn’t work and try like giving me food that would work or entice me with showtunes

So the scene where Mina and Lucy are running around in the rain and then they kiss reminded me of something I read before I watched the movie for the first time. I was looking up if there were any explicit sex scenes in the movie (I just like to know ahead of time) and whatever I read said like “there wasn’t a whole lot of sexual content in the movie but there was brief lesbianism” and I don’t know why that made me laugh. Like you’re ok with like beastiality but two women kissing is just too much that you had to mention it???

Side note I wasn’t sure how to spell beastiality but I just guessed cause I don’t want that in my search history

I’m assuming the animals at the zoo can sense that Drac is coming since they’re freaking out???

The costume designer knew what they were doing when they picked the flowy dresses and robes for the scene in the garden when it’s windy! They’re so pretty!

Seriously they didn’t mention the beastiality (non consensual by the way) in the movie but mention a brief kiss between two women…i don’t understand people

I really can’t get over how stupid Drac’s wig is…like why is the back super long and then the front is like shoulder length??? If was just shoulder length all around I would have no problem with it

Headcanons - Tattoos

This is the big comprehensive post to go over my muses and the tattoos they have! I have linked photos that are similar in style or content to the corresponding character’s tattoos but not an exact match!

Lázaro Vega - X X X

Lázaro has a large back tattoo and tattoos on his upper arms. He is hoping to get the rest of his arms done so that he has to full sleeves! His overall theme is botanical, of course, Lázaro having a literal garden on his skin.

Angelo Dominic Marchioni - X X

Angelo mostly has hand tattoos, words on his knuckles and everything. He had it done when he was younger and keen to look cool. They’re a little faded these days and it’s clear they were done by someone less than professional, but he still likes them. His knuckles read, in a crude font, “FAREWELL”.

Angus Mannix Kierney - X X X X

As a tattoo artist, Angus prides himself in his collection. Nearly every inch of Angus is tattooed minus his face, palms, bottoms of his feet, and, uh, places where the sun don’t shine. He has no set theme, most of the tattoos on his left arm and legs used as practice for his craft. It’s clear to see his early attempts at tattooing— he isn’t ashamed of them, seeing as he feels he’s become much better and one can’t forget where they’ve been. He works mostly in an older fashion sort of style, heavy shading and using limited, high saturated colors when he actually decides to use color. He also definitely has a “MOM” tattoo...because even bastards sometimes love their mamas.

Anton never likes to bring attention to his arm tattoo, seeing as it’s an identifying mark that someone may witness and use to link him to his crimes. He often will wrap the area up before performing a kill on the off chance his arms become exposed. It is of a dagger, rather similar to the one he usually uses for murder, with two roses intertwined with it. It’s in memory of his parents, not so much in remembrance of them but of their deaths. Dude has a few tattoos he got during his longer sentences in jail. They’re not representative of his crimes but simply something to do while bored in your cell. He mostly has them on his inner left arm and has a hula girl done by a fellow inmate on his upper right bicep.

Flo Loyola - X X

Flo has a tattoo in honor of her grandmother on her left bicep. She definitely wants to get more, but right about the time she psyched herself for getting one, she lost her grandma, whom she was very close to. It just made sense for this one to be the first.

Lawrence Valdis - X

With every set of eyes he successfully collects, Lawrence gets a tattoo on his back (it’s an eye, of course). It’s both used a proper count of his collection and also to further signify his status as a self proclaimed Argus. Each eye is a simple design and rather small so that he can fit a large number on his back, but the irises are all colored in with the corresponding pair’s color.

Quincy Haywood Fairchild III - X X X X X X

He has a few poke-and-stick’s he’s gotten during times of impairment. He has definitely woken up with new ones from time to time, confused as to why he requested them but...hey, they’re there.

Sloan Unger - X X X X X X X X

Again, Sloan’s tattoos are homemade and definitely not very thought out. He’ll put anything he finds funny on his body. Literally. Also quite a few alien themed ones because he loves aliens!

Yasmin isn’t actually too fond of getting the tattoos (it pinches a lot! she’s sensitive!), but she’s got a single one over her left breast— a small, anatomical heart. And it is red! If you ask her about it, she usually just says she thought it was cute...and a little reminder that love always looks a little different in real life than expected.

Yorick - X

Every one in his former organization had identifying tattoos to signify their status and loyalty. Yorick’s, as former boss, was large and resided on his back— in prison, after being betrayed and losing everything, he thought about having it altered but decided against it. It is still a symbol of his strength and status.

All the stuff you're not supposed to feel. Where are our sanctuaries and retreats to process, heal and integrate that stuff? We got all the restaurants (looking at you celebs). All the clubs. Where are our spas, cabins, gardens and wilderness walks? Where are our prayer and meditation centers? Our magical places?

They got: Kripalu, Esalen, Shambhala & countless others. What we got? I know. "Use what you got to get what you need." I've thought about going to one of those places for years. I guess I just never felt it would be that restorative for me. But, I look at the offerings when I feel like I need a retreat. And since George they got us splashed all over the home page. And they got a picture of Jessamyn Stanley above the fold. And they got a yoga sistuh saluting all the Sun she can see right up over the "pay here" button.

And don't get me wrong, they mean well. I feel the sincerity. But, I guess I just don't want Karen's sister Mary tending to me when my soul needs a little TLC. But that's just me. I gotta use my "white voice" enough on the daily. Maybe I just don't want to have to use it on retreat.

Because I'm tired. And if I slip up and call the "restroom" a bathroom, I just don't want Mary kindly reminding me that the "restroom" is on the right. Or, apologizing that they don't have hot sauce. And the menu is vegan, organic and all-cotton and personally designed by Gwyneth and did I get the complimentary Goop self-care pak and...But, like I said, that's just me.

But you know they had Pops flying all over the world, dead smack in the middle of Jim Crow, growling tunefully about, "Oh, what a wonderful world" and using his laser-cannon smile to sell "Capitalism" and "America" when back at Home he couldn't even enter through the front gate. A "Welcome" sign don't always mean "Welcome." And a black-face figurine on the lawn don't mean they got a "colored" bathroom. I guess even on Juneteenth I still feel weary late at night. "It begins to tell 'round midnight."

But we have come a long way down Freedom Road and that is reason enough to rest. Lay this ol burden down for a night. See if I can catch up with Mama'nem in Dreamland.

Excuse the bitter tone. I never knew I felt like this. And the question never occured to me before. I guess I need to get me a cut tomorrow and head on over to Church Sunday mornin'. And somebody better bring me some rib tips Saturday night too. So, I can do, like The Eternal Mrs. Edwina (Emah Ahkot Zamirah Baht Yisrael) Clara Baker Prim, My Momma, used to do: Put Anita, Luther and Peabo on repeat... Mix herself up a gin martini and sip on it slow. And when it got real good to her put some Bill Withers on over in there with a little taste of Al Jarreau. And before long Billy Paul would be talkin' about the kind of thing he had going on with Mrs Jones and Patty Austin would be cooing about how she wanted James Ingram to come to her and "Let me put my arms around you" and I would be called up for DJ Duty. And Q. (Better known to You by his nickname "Quincy Jones") would step up on the Bandstand and begin makin' all kinds of Mojo Moves. Because he was The Dude who could and would, by waving his magic wand, summon all the power of Field Hollers, Gospel, Ragtime, Big Band Jazz, New Jack Swing, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Rock n Roll, Disco, Salsa, Soul, Funk, Rhythm n Blues, Hip Hop and Bebop to make it so, that if we wanted to, we could just "PUT BACK ALL THE GOOD TIMES that we ever had. And even make them better, with just a little bit of Razzamatazz." And Grandma Nanny in the back like the sound of that. Because Cab Calloway (Sigh "My my, my...he was so fine!") had already taught her everything that she ever needed to know about Razzmatazz. ("Now, that man had Razzmatazz!") And toes would start tappin' and fingers would start snappin' and healing would start happenin' ...

...until Momma had to get on back out there on the battlefield...

And soldier on in the bitter, grinding, never-ending war with and for, that damn hydra-headed beast

You know? Maybe I am finally beginning to understand that when you have to wrestle daily with this monster named America, spiritual care, energy work and every other kind of hoodoo, conjure and new age metaphysical magic, is absolutely necessary. I guess my hard-as-rock know-it-all noggin done finally got soft enough to comprehend what she was desperately trying to find in all those Black Hebrew meetings, spiritual seminars, New Age book stores, video tapes and libraries. When you are wrestling daily with this monster they call America you got to find a way keep your spirit from dying or you end up homeless, alone, balled-up in the freezing closet of an abandoned house in East Atlanta, desperately trying to make it to your next drink or hit while your toes rot from gangrene and frostbite in your boots... just like me.

See. You/me/we, if we hope to survive our daily encounters with this Kraken called America, have to find ways to keep our souls and spirits alive or we perish or worse still, as I sadly discovered, become that feared and hated ghoul, what the descendents of enslaved Africans known today as Haitians called a Zombie. A tragic and frightful casualty of the ongoing struggle to survive as the descendents of enslaved Africans in the Americas. So, I guess I am just now beginning to understand and publicly recognize what Momma'nem, the original American badass mutha(shut to mouth) superpeople achieved - they survived, defeated and finally emerge triumphant - body mind and spirit intact, alive and free. I think I am just beginning to rekonize!

So I guess I can't be mad as hell, it only took them 57,877 days since the Emancipation Proclamation was decreed on January 1st 1863 to get around to officially recognizing our magnificent foremothers' and forefathers! But we here now. And I sho nuff appreciate that 'ol man Biden found the strength to lift a pen. I'm excited! Maybe in just about another 57,000 days they'll get around to sending us that 40 acres and a mule they promised.

See. Now I know I'm tired.

Be well Brothers and Sisters! Be hale and healthy and whole. Free in Black Mind Body and Soul! Tonight, in this not yet perfect freedom we are blessed by our divine ancestors and The Most High to enjoy, may we feel their unceasing care and love, and know each of us in our own hearts that we are their wildest and most cherished dreams realized and made real.

IMAGINE!

So, the reaper department is having quite a chaotic day (and I mean a little more than normal of course) , and the manager had had an especially horrid time dealing with those crackheads. I mean just thinking back on it,

Theo spraying Quincy in the eye with disinfectant spray for atleast a minute, I mean he low-key had it coming, how could you even attempt to mess with his yandere side? (The down low is so June had found this caterpillar in the garden, he named is Sir Winkleton btw, who was very colorful and he wanted to "show his brothers this glorious wonder of the world". He went to Theo first and he thought it was quite unsanitary and nasty, but he gave him an encouraging smile because that's his best fren. So then June came around to Quincy and was like, "look at my new pet!" And Quincy screamed at the top of his lungs and slapped it out of June's hand with a DISGUSTANG! Now that brought tears to June's eyes, SIR WINKLETON WAS HIS SON, HIS PRIDE AND JOY, AND NOW HE WAS JUST DED ON THE FLOOR! Quincy still wasn't satisfied and yelled, "nasty insect" Now Theo couldn't just ignore his favorite person in the world's suffering, and waltzed up beside Quincy, his eyes empty eyes which bore deep into the depths of Quincy's soul, nothing could match the agony of watching his best fren's pain ridden tears. "Did someone say disinfectant?" Then Theo sprayed disinfectant in Quincy's eyes for atleast a minute. No one messes with Theo or those he cares about. Theo and June held a funeral which over half of the reapers showed up due to not being able to turn down June's woeful face. It took Quincy AND Verine atleast an hour to wash it out and stop the burning, honestly poor Verine lmao.)

Kati almost burning the whole entire department down. (He was attempting to make something, you couldn't tell by the charred remains, maybe ramen? But he left to go bite Noah who had offered assistance, and came back to a steam filled kitchen and the fire alarm blaring. The first one to reach the kitchen happened to be Ell, who was like "I'll use an enchantment to quench it!" Which, as you know, they tend to fail, so the two who were about to enter, Day and Sian, were drenched, causing Sian to flee in mental breakdown. Day was confused but saw flames rising up, and in his, entirely flawed and completely illogical, logic catapulted himself directly at the fire, cause he was water? Who knows, but he got set on fire and somehow the manager was able to stop the situation before it escalated to horrible measures, like death or arson, maybe??)

Mori successfully being a con artist and conning Louis, with yet another neverending scheme. (Even the manager couldn't figure out what he had done this time, sigh)

Kirr setting up, yet another, trap to specifically catch deer (he dislikes them the most?. And Verine just so happened to stumble into one, he wasn't exactly in to where it would actually stab him, the sharp claws were only barely touching his leg, since he was so skinny, so he couldn't move or he would be stabbed. Which this situation was actually pretty ironic, cause Day passed by and was like, "Hey, Bambi, you alright?" But Bambi is a deer so I mean Kirr kinda got what he wanted right? After being set free, Verine was so shocked he kinda just, fainted, so Youssef reluctantly dragged him back to the Diluculo dorms.

And sadly many many more chaotic events.

So yeah, everyone gathered for dinner to discuss their trip to an engineering facility spoken to have a vengeful spirit lurking. After they spoke of their plans, a weary and down looking manager sighed,

"I would just kinda like some alone time tonight guys, be sure to pack your stuff." And she walked off slowly back to her designated corners. But when she turned the corner her exhausted attitude had faded away and all that was left was excitement, as she sauntered away.

Everyone was quite worried at that, their optimistic manager so low?! So, about an hour later everyone agreed to have Theo check up on her, so he knocked on her door. No answer. He decided to just open the door and say,

"Manager? You see, I just came to see if you were doing alri--" Only to find her goofily laughing, she screeched, not noticing him there,

"EX CA USE ME, GALA BUT ATLEAST I DON'T LOOK LIKE A HIK, OK?! HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY FASHION SENSE!" Her Wii remote was pointed directly at the screen, and she was talking to an animated pig, who, low-key did look kinda like a hik. She was playing Animal Crossing, and no, I don't me acnh, I mean the OG City Folk, yeah, she's that old. But for modern days sake we'll say she's playing it on a Wii-U. Theo caught her with her Wii remote in hand and reaching for some gummy bears, when she sensed a presence she looked around and her face turned to one that someone would wear if they just got caught snorting a bag of cocaine or something lmao.

Theo walked back to tell everyone dejectledly that she was perfectly fine. Maybe he should buy her some gummy bears for her birthday?

I don't know where this even took a turn to, but Animal Crossing City Folk was my childhood, and me as a manager would totally do that.
