Year-End Poll #7: 1956

One of the interesting things about doing these polls is seeing how going through each decade starts to feel like a countdown to some great cultural moment. I imagine the 60s polls will feel like a countdown to Beatlemania, the 70s to disco, the 80s to the MTV era, the 90s to grunge, the 00s to the mp3 era, and the 10s to streaming. And the 50s felt like a countdown to Elvis Presley.

So much has already been said about Elvis, from his "King of Rock and Roll" moniker; to his producer' Sam Phillips' infamous quote about making a billion dollars using a white man to make Black music; to the numerous controversies and legends that could only be attached to a figure of this level of cultural impact -- for better or for worse. As many know, one of the Elvis songs featured in this poll, Hound Dog, was a cover of the blues song originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton. For the sake of these polls, the songs will be voted based on the versions that reached the Billboard charts. However, I still found it important to highlight the song's origins. Many may also know that his rendition of Hound Dog lead to an outrage of controversy, because he had the audacity to move his h*ps on The Milton Berle Show.

If you disregard Elvis the Pelvis, however, the top of the 1956 charts may not feel all that different from prior years. We still see a lot of the traditional pop, vocal quartets, and jazz standards we've grown accustomed to. Which makes sense. Not only do changes rarely happen overnight, but the full snapshot of the culture at any given time can rarely be seen in the Billboard charts -- much less the top ten picks from said chart. However, something is definitely different.

In my opinion, the most telling evidence of this change isn't Elvis Presley. It's Kay Starr's Rock and Roll Waltz. For one, it's a novelty song -- a style of music popular in this decade and will only see more popularity as we move into the 60s. But it goes beyond that. The joke of the song is that the narrator of the song sees her parents try to dance the waltz to this new "rock and roll" music, and she's commenting on the absurdity of it. As the song says, "it's old, but it's new". Some less charitable modern listeners may even call it the "how do you do, fellow kids?" of 1956. That's how you know that something is shifting in the culture, and record labels are scrambling to catch up.

In addition to the change in sound, 1956 also brings us an expanded Billboard Chart to pull from. With more young people listening to their own music, charts began to focus more on retail record sales, rather than performances in public venues like previous years. However, we're still a few years away from the Billboard Top 100.

the grocery store was one place emma had never really mastered. she never had a plan, or more importantly a list. the amount of organization and planning regina put into the otherwise trivial errand, perplexed emma a bit. granted it had been only her for so long.. to the blonde, you go put food you want in the cart and go home. 

green eyes scanned the paper the brunette had given her and pursed her lips ‘gogi berries’ emma looked up at regina, who was examining the produce they had stopped in front of. what the hell are gogi berries?? the simple thing to do is to ask regina what the berries were and what she planned on using them for but emma stayed quiet and took a step forward, “yanno, if you wanted to stare at melons all day we could have definitely stayed home..” she smirked and rested her chin on her girlfriend’s shoulder. “although i’m more of a peach fan..” she followed up casually, her hand settled on the other’s hip.

why fuchsia frankensteins’s dodgebolt strategy was absolutely GENIUS: an essay

okay, i know fuchsia frankensteins’s dodgebolt strategy wasn’t entirely new, but there are many things about it that just makes it so perfect for their team. 

first thing’s first, i just want to contradict hbomb’s comments about this dodgebolt strategy. he himself believes that since they got there together as a team, then they should all be able to shoot because it would somewhat be a celebration of their cooperation and teamwork. while i don’t necessarily oppose his statements, i do think that fuchsia’s “funnel dream first” plan was still able to promote the teamwork fuchsia upheld during the event. in fact, i fully believe their strategy embraced their teamwork because of the complexity of their strategy and how each member of fuchsia had a role during dodgebolt that helped them sweep through all three games. 

all members being able to shoot shouldn’t be the main idea to go to when wanting to show a team’s cooperation and unity. 

fuchsia’s strategy wasn’t merely to establish a hierarchy and simply stick to that plan-- i fully believe there was some unspoken yet brilliant trickery they pulled off that helped boost their win. like, a lot of trickery. granted, they may have been doing this unintentionally, but everything just lines up so perfectly that i really wanna talk about the genius behind it.

firstly, let’s talk about dream. it was obvious he was going to be the main shooter when it came to the game, and i really want to commend dream for being able to create this strategy in the first place. to me, dream wasn’t too sneaky when it came to his role since he was simply the main archer and he delivered whenever he needed to shoot someone off. what was amazing, however, is how he was able to divert everyone’s attention to himself so that the opposing team would underestimate his teammates’ accuracy when it comes to shooting as well.

the dream ace during the first round completely made them target and hyperfocus on dream. with the fact that hbomb wasn’t expecting a hierarchy of archery when it came to fuchsia, and with the hyperfocusing on dream, they completely undervalued the other players of fuchsia, especially george.

and speaking of george, holy fucking shit gogy. i’m going to talk about george and sapnap's dodgebolt roles because honestly, it was real fucking genius. 

what’s interesting about george is how underestimated he is when it comes to pvp, especially archery, and i think sapnap and dream’s infamous reputation when it comes to pvp paved the way for george to be their secret weapon all along.

there was only one game in mcc 11 that showcased their pvp skills, and that would be sky battle. during sky battle, especially in the first and third rounds, sapnap and dream absolutely dominated the kills. witnessing this, the blue black cats (who i will be referring to as bbc from now on) were led to believe that george wasn’t as good in pvp as the other two.

but all sky battle did was made sapnap fool bbc into thinking that he should be the priority when it comes to dodgebolt, leaving george to sweep them in the end.

you can see in bbc’s point of view that sapnap was always their priority after they’ve taken out dream. i know sapnap was doing this unintentionally, but the fact that he kept picking up the arrows before the george sweeps happened further added onto the mind games they were playing with bbc. with sapnap picking up the arrows, it gave them the impression that he was the second sharpest shooter in fuchsia, and him passing the arrows to dream was only him being “scared”.

sapnap’s façade in dodgebolt completely paved the way for george to slowly reveal he was fuchsia’s secret weapon all along.

you see it happen during the game. round 2 was the best place to see how bbc completely prioritized sapnap after dream’s out. sapnap took the attention away from george so when the opportunity comes, george can strike the opposing team dead.

(i just loved how they believed george was the shield and sapnap was the threat when in reality, it was the other way around.)

now, let’s move onto karl, who also played a pivotal role in dodgebolt. i know we like to joke about karl carrying when he was shot first three times, but let me tell you that karl being believed to be the “easiest target” was the best plan fuchsia had into gathering arrows at the beginning so dream can take out the best players when it was their time to shoot. the trickery was absolutely genius-- bbc thinks they’re taking out an easy target, but fuchsia takes this as an opportunity to harvest arrows to take hbomb out first during every round.

karl was 100% a valuable asset to fuchsia, and was important because, again, he was the reason dream could easily take out most of the team during the first few shots-- that’s how hbomb was taken out in round 2 and 3. karl walked so the rest of the dream team can run, basically.

(kudos to @sapnapss for mentioning this ^^ !)

with the roles explained, i’m just gonna commend other things fuchsia did that helped boost their winning streak. 

firstly, big kudos to dream for making up the strategy beforehand so there was no confusion when it came to dodgebolt. compare mcc 8’s dodgebolt and mcc 11’s dodgebolt and you can see how his team was less stressed and more decisive when it came to executing plans and shots. 

secondly, kudos to george and dream humbling their team whenever they win because they didn’t want a repeat of what happened during mcc 9. it really helped calm their nerves and be less complacent and more focused.

thirdly, i’m quite amazed at how they adapted to new plans when they realized how they died in previous rounds. when shelby took out most of their team in round 2, dream made it a plan to shoot shelby after he takes out hbomb. when they realized the “shoot left shoot right” strategy didn’t work for sapnap and george, they didn’t try implementing it during the last shots of round 3. 

and lastly, i completely loved the “don’t get the arrow in the middle strategy”. it was easy to see why dream opposed taking the arrow when sapnap got in round two-- it made the other team aim at the better players of fuchsia more. by not taking the arrow, it leaves bbc at a loss of who to aim for first, so they do the second best thing they can do which is target karl. and we know why targeting karl was important for fuchsia’s “funnelling dream” strategy. all of what dream told them to do was deliberate and part of the fucking plan. 

in summary, fuchsia’s dodgebolt plan wasn’t just a “dream carry” strategy, it was full of deliberate trickery and detailed planning that gave each person of fuchsia an important role that brought them their victory. it’s no wonder that fuchsia was the first team in mcc history with a 3-0 win for dodgebolt.

The reader's a secret weapon they hold against Dream (she waits for him in the Nether or the End; the decision is up to u), since they know he really likes her and it's mutual anyways. She's capable of killing Dream with hearts to spare and in last hopes of winning the hunt, he proposes a kiss (in MC, of course) for his life (which the reader grants him). Thx in advance! 💞😊-

It had been quite a day of filming, this manhunt proving to be one for the books.  Dream had really been stubborn upon not dying, and sapnap, George, and bad were really trying their hardest. 

George was so close to getting a dream when he first crossed to the nether but it was futile as he had looted around a lot and got more armor then they even had time to find.

Dream was pretty sure he was set after proving himself with that battle against George, he had 9 blaze rods, ten pearls and a burning sensation in his stomach from the excitement of winning.

As he sat listening to the 3 weirdos giggling amongst themselves he thought about you, you would've been so proud of the way he's wiggled out of their grasps so many times from a boat chase where he managed to drown Sapnap by using a tnt to blow them up in a cave. A blush crossed his cheeks at the thought of you being excited with him. He couldn't wait to tell you about it later.

Lately you two had been talking awfully a lot and he was enjoying it a lot. You'd met through sapnap since you knew him for a long time. You often streamed with Wilbur or Tubbo too, Tubbo being another one of your favorite people.

Dream loves to watch the streams and videos you both make because you two are so entertaining. Dream thought you were absolutely adorable, especially when you and Tubbo are trying to figure out redstone for a new scheme or terrorizing Tommy for a bit. Most of all he loved your bed wars streams, he was always entranced at how amazing you were at pvp. He loved every bit of it.

He himself had a really hard time talking to you at first. In his defense, you were a pretty girl! Adorable, sweet, funny and kind and incredible at pvp. How was he supposed to approach you without freaking you out with his tiny little obsession.

The sound of an ender eye breaking snapped him out of his little day dream, realizing he was nearby the stronghold, he started his way down.

Unknowing to dream, the boys were just over a hill watching him just as he was digging down. Instead of following just yet sapnap sent a message on discord, to you.

There was nothing in the unspoken rules of manhunt that said nothing about a secret weapon. That's exactly what you were. Sapnap and George and bad all knew you were one of the few people that could easily beat dreams.

Dream knew it too, sometimes he liked to tell himself it was only because she got him flustered so easily, but deep down he knew you just played way too much Minecraft. 

You sat impatiently waiting for him to reach the end, impatiently sitting near a clump of endermen. You were nervous and excited at the same time, beating dreams was always fun. You'd always admired dreams and his presence on the internet but after meeting him, things changed a bit.

He seemed hesitant talking to you at first but lately he had been texting you every morning and night and even called you a few times! He gave you so many butterflies just at the thought of him.

Dream searched around the stronghold looking for the portal, as he was about to turn a corner sapnap spoke up, 

“Don't you guys think it's been a bit boring without..y/n” He smirked behind his computer screen as he could practically hear dreams heart rate go up just by that single sentence. He was correct with that bet.

“Duh! y/n would have had a dream dead like an hour ago '' George spoke with a knowing smirk.

“That's not true-” Dream tried to poke into the conversation when bad suddenly interrupted him.

“No you muffin, you know y/n would totally have beat your booty way back in the nether”

“Booty-” Dream was cut off once again by a fit of hyena laughter from his friends. 

As they giggled he finally found the portal and filled in the empty slots hopping in quickly. He was surprised he hadn't heard the boys say anything about it with the achievements popping up onto the screen. 

He was confused up until he spotted you, standing by one of the pillars.

“what?! how?! y/n? how did you- when- huh?” His flustered state was quickly made obvious by the way the boys could hear a smile even through his confusion.

You started sprinting towards him as the three boys dropped into the portal as well but not rushing over just yet, wanting to see this unfold first.

You let out a small giggle as you were gaining on him, he was running around still confused on how you were there.

“Come here Dreeeeam” You said maniacally trying to gain on him.

“Get away y/n! how are you even-”

He let out a yell as you got your first crit on him, your ax was clearly more op than his and he could tell by only one hit.

“How did you do that much damage! What are you even-”

After finally trying to fight her, he was at 3 hearts and he even had a shield. 

“Okay, okay, okay, y/n hold on for a second please” He backed up a bit facing her character as she lowered her weapon waiting on his next move.

“I have..a proposition” Dream let out a breath nervously, 

“What kind of proposition?” You smirked, ready to decimate him with only a few more hits.

“No! No propositions! y/n you have him just kill him so we win!'' Sapnap chimed in with George and badly agreed.

“No no guys, hold on, I wanna know what it is,” You said with a small airy laugh.

“If you don't kill me y/n, i'll give you something I think you'll like”

“Like enough not to win?”

“I hope so..” Dream started to regret this decision, he knew he liked you and he thought you liked him, but how could he be sure? He would bed George would call him stupid for thinking she wouldn't like him but he just wasn't sure.

“Tell me then, what is it?” You were getting a bit antsy, he was a wild card to you. You adored him so much but sometimes you just never knew what was going on in his brain.

“A kiss.” You definitely weren't expecting that. As Dream spoke the two words he'd been repeating in his head for minutes, you were silent, sitting in shock.

You were expecting one of the boys to call it bullshit and tell you to just murder him on the spot, but they were silent.

“A..kiss?” You weren't sure you heard him right, because you couldn't believe it! A kiss? From Dream? You'd faint!

“Yeah. A kiss. And you let me kill the dragon.” He was gaining a bit more confidence after he realized he made you nervous.

“What?! No! No kissing! Murdering y/n! Murdering!” George wasn't surprised you were considering it because he knew how much you both like each other but he really doesn't want to lose like this.

“In- in game or?” you were sure he meant in game, but you were curious.

“Well.. it'll do until we meet in person. But I'll still owe you a real one after you let me win.” He smiled widely just thinking about getting to kiss you, or even be near you in real life! he could burst just at the thought.

While he was daydreaming, you were conflicted. The butterflies that were creating a sick feeling in your stomach at the thought of kissing him were overtaking the thought of wanting to beat him. You had already decided but you knew the boys would be so angry their secret weapon had failed them.

“How about. I take both kisses.. and then you have to beat me to the dragon. I won't fight you, you just have to beat the dragon before I can” Your plan seemed full proof. Seemed like a win win situation, or so you thought.

“Sounds perfect to me, y/n” He was grinning so madly, Your character got close to his, just a block or so in front of him.

“This won't be nearly as good as it could be but, MWAH '' Dream made an exaggerated kissing noise as he jumped towards your character hitting into it, then turning and booking it towards the dragon as it was starting to perch.

The boys were cheering and yelling as you sat in shock, not at the fact that his character kissed yours but because of what he said before. 

Was he really going to kiss you in real life? Your mind was absolutely swimming with thoughts when you suddenly checked back in at the sound of three boys yelling your name and the sound of the dragon dying.

“You just stood there y/n! why would you just stand there?!” George tries to sound mad but he really couldn't be. He was sure dream was on cloud 9 at that moment.

Dream was out of his chair, yelling with excitement as the boys were angrily shouting about their loss while you were still silent. Your silence was taken by a laugh, your own laugh,

“Hey y/n, can I call you in a little while?” He asked

“Yeah, please.” You said shakily as you left the discord call.

You leaned back in your chair, shaking your head with a small smile. He was going to be the death of you.

Alone at Last

Summary: Durring a manhunt, Dream gets George alone and doesn’t have the heart to kill him.

Lee!George Ler!Dream

Warnings: This is a tickle fic! Talk about (Minecraft) harm

This isn’t necessarily a shippost but it could be taken that way.

“I’m not going to do anything!”

“Then why are you smirking? No! Stay back!” George shrieked when Dream took a step closer. Dream laughed and shook his head.

“Put down your weapons please Gogy.” He said with a harmless smile, not that George could see it from behind the mask.

Said man widened his eyes and gave Dream and incredulous look. “What do you think I am? Stupid?”

“George. You are all alone, do as I say and I promise I’ll leave you be until Sap catches up.” Dream placed down a chest to show he didn’t plan on taking anything. “Just show me a sign of good faith.”

George looked between the chest and Dream. What was he playing at?

Dream sighed. “1” Again, George didn’t move. “2..”

“What are you counting for?”

“3”

“Dream?”

“You have until I get to five, darling, or the deals off.”

George huffed in defeat and opened the chest to put some stuff in.

“4, 5.” He felt hands wrap around his waist, pulling him from the chest where he had just placed the majority of his things.

“Sorry George, I got a little impatient. But in my defense, you could have tried harder.” Dream can’t help but tease the smaller boy. His face is already bright red from being so close.

“DreAM! Let me go! You promised if I put my things up you’d leave me be!” George squirms in his friend’s grasp. Being physically close was always something that flustered George beyond words, even though he didn’t mind in the slightest.

“Hmm. Well you see, I meant that I wouldn’t hurt you, which I won’t! But this opportunity is just too good to pass up on. So tell me Georgie, what is the hunter’s plan?” Dream sits on the floor, taking George with him. George’s back is against Dream’s chest, he is trapped in a tight but comfortable hug.

“Ha! Why would I tell you that, you do realize you’re the one being hunted right?” George is mostly relaxed at this point, he decides playing around a little bit couldn’t hurt.

“Of course I do. But as to why you would tell me... well. I saw something very interesting a few months ago, you and Karl were sitting under the Manberg tree and he just wouldn’t stop poking at you. Now granted, you blush veeery easily but I don’t think I’ve ever seen you like that. You were just as giggly and blushy as you could be.”

“D-Dream, be rational here, if I tell you the plan it’ll ruin the whole game.”

Dream drums his fingers on the smaller man’s belly as if he is deep in thought. “This is true. But it would ruin it for you, not me.” He stilled his fingers, “Laugh for me.”

The fingers came back to life, they spidered across George’s tummy and lightly scratched at his sides. While his hands were busy, he continued to whisper teases since he was at the perfect place to do so.

George was thrown into giggles, he had never been very sensitive to lighter touches. If anything, he was relaxing, it was like a nice little break.

Dream realized this, even though he wanted George to be comfortable, because this was all in good fun, he could really use the advantage that would be knowing the game strategy. His gaze shifted to study the smaller boy’s face, it was truly adorable; he was flustered by the intimacy, giving his face a gentle red glow. His smile was wide and care free, his eyes shut tight with his head leaning against Dream’s chest.

“ahahaAHH NOO WAIT WAHAHAIT! DREheheheam”

Dream snapped his head down to see what had happened, his hands had drifted down to claw at his hips. Despite the shock from George’s outburst, Dream couldn’t help but smile fondly at how cute the boy was. He was squirming now but it was clearly out of instinct, this all changed however as Dream decided to go from clawing to squeezing sporadically at the bone.

“NOOO NOHOHO W-WHY” George could feel his blush rising to his ears. Oh god, why had he figured out his weakness so soon. This man will be the death of him.

“Ahawww George! Look at you! Why didn’t you tell me this earlier, we could have done this a long time ago.”

“BECAHAHA- BECAUSE I KNEW YOHOHOU WOULD PUHUHULL THIS SHIHIHIT.” He was right, Dream is a well known ler among the friend group, feared and revered for his tactics. “GOHOHO SOMEWHERE EHEHELES!” He begged, George truely was enjoying himself and would probably end up asking Dream to do this again soon. However, everyone has their limits and with today being full of suprises, it is understandable that George would tire quickly.

Dream didn’t want to tire him out too much, they still had a challenge to play after all. So he decided to try a few more spots and call it quits. He began by using one arm to hold George across the waist and using the other to skitter and squeeze at the tops of his thighs. This produced squeaks and had George trying to sink down. Dream caught him of course, but didn’t know how long either of them would be comfortable in this position and decided to move on.

Armpits had always been a personal weak spot for the tall man. He supposed it would be relativity the same for George. And so on he went, trying different spots while keeping a watchful eye on his friend. Once he was sure George was tired and satisfied, he slowed to a stop.

“As much as I’d love to stay here, I’ve got a dragon to kill. Come see me after and we can continue this.” Dream scooted out from under one of his closest friends and lowered his upper body to the ground. “Sapnap and Bad should be here in a few minutes, I won’t tell if you don’t, if you do... well good luck, even I wouldn’t want Bad to have that over me.” He teased again before taking his leave and the extra time he’d scored.

George soon found out that Dream was right, about 8 minutes later, he heard Sapnap yelling for Bad when they had spotted him on the ground. George saved himself the embarrassment by telling them he knew which direction to go in. Though, the look on his accomplices faces signified they definitely knew something had happened.

They all carried on as normal and if George had sought Dream out to ‘talk’ about what had happened, well that’s history.
