“If you happen to read fairy tales, you will observe that one idea runs from one end of them to the other--the idea that peace and happiness can only exist on some condition. This idea, which is the core of ethics, is the core of the nursery-tales.” ― G.K. Chesterton
+
“Everything you look at can become a fairy tale and you can get a story from everything you touch.” ― Hans Christian Andersen
+
“Can you not see," I said, "that fairy tales in their essence are quite solid and straightforward; but that this everlasting fiction about modern life is in its nature essentially incredible? Folk-lore means that the soul is sane, but that the universe is wild and full of marvels. Realism means that the world is dull and full of routine, but that the soul is sick and screaming. The problem of the fairy tale is—what will a healthy man do with a fantastic world? The problem of the modern novel is—what will a madman do with a dull world? In the fairy tales the cosmos goes mad; but the hero does not go mad. In the modern novels the hero is mad before the book begins, and suffers from the harsh steadiness and cruel sanity of the cosmos.” ― G.K. Chesterton

My thoughts on the little mermaid live action...
Tumblr media
The little mermaid was one of my favorite movies growing up, and even though the live action was not perfect and had the same problems as a lot of remakes, it was better then I expected and even with it's flaws, at least the movie carried the themes of the original tale and had some heart. The second half is really where the film starts to pick up and I like some of the chances to the land arc.
Tumblr media
The ending acully made me a little emotional because even though it's a happy ending there was also a sence of melancholy. Ariel has everything she ever wanted and is following her own path, but she has a moment to mourn the live she is leaving behind. It's a part of growing up and I like how film show how the little mermaid is a young woman's coming of age journey, both the joy and sadness of it.
Tumblr media
And the part where Jodi gave Halle the fork, passing down the magic of Ariel got me right in the feels.😭
Tumblr media
I like all the references to the original fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson like the quote in the beginning of the film and the joke about killing the prince.
Tumblr media
Ariels mermaid tale is everything I hope it would, it's just so beautiful and magical. I also love how they styled Hailey Bailey's hair, the dreadlocks with loose strands of hair made her look like a sea goddess and I love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Halle Bailey was perfect as Ariel and so was Jonah hauer-king as Eric, and there honestly the best part of the film. The chemistry between them was adorable and reminded me of Ella and Kit from Chinderella 2015. I also love how the film highlights how Ariel and Eric are kindred spirits, both longing for freedom and to be understood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly it's nice to have a romantic fairytale again and I'm glad this movie embraced the love story and even improve it from the original movie. (not that OG Ariel and Eric where necessarily bad or anything but the romance was updated in a way that works for the modern-day without disrespecting the value of the love story.)
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed the film and even though there are things I didn't like, the film got enough right and at least understood the core of this tale and had some sincerity, as a fan of the original that's all I could have ask for.

Oh hey, The Little Mermaid, might as well give it a go.
Hans Christian Anderson quote to start off, good choice.
This opening sequence feels long? I miss a song to deliver exposition.
Oof, the cgi is…not good. Disney know there are real life coral reefs they could have shot footage in, right?
Love the mermaid aesthetic! Shame about the cgi. The sisters sitting there mute and badly rendered doesn’t help.
Tumblr media
Ariel passes the MSR test - Flounder, not so much.
Why is the Scuttle sequence taking place underwater? No wonder the budget was astronomical.
It also undermines the scene with Trident and ironically makes Ariel less rebellious? She doesn’t break the rules by regularly going to the surface, her first time is rescuing Eric.
Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice - I actually really love the belting.
Oh I get it, they wanted this shot and reverse engineered Ariel never having been to the surface around it.
Tumblr media
Now we’re getting Fathoms Below. Ok.
Aw, I like Ariel helping Max swim.
Eric reaching for Ariel’s hand as she’s singing the reprise is a nice touch.
Why is the bulk of Ursula’s dialogue explaining the plot already happening? Lots of showing and telling in this movie.
Eric’s song is no Her Voice, but I get what they’re going for.
Javier Bardem is a very subdued Triton - maybe it’s a case of the greenscreens.
I do kind of love what they did for Ariel’s hair.
Tumblr media
This movie is 2 hours 20 minutes long, and it’s because half the scenes are twice as long as they need to be. I don’t want to get into the weeds with comparisons, but the animated film screenplay was tight. Not a word wasted.
Case in point, Ursula doesn’t just say she’ll make Ariel human, she then explains that she’ll lose her tail and won’t be able to breathe underwater. Trust the actors (and the audience) please! Not everything needs to be articulated.
So Ariel doesn’t remember she needs to get Eric to kiss her? Is this trying to fix a plothole that doesn’t exist?
Between this and Eric being adopted things are needlessly complicated yet have little bearing on the plot or characters.
Tumblr media
I do like Eric’s observatory visually mirroring Ariel’s grotto as well as thematically. It’s a cute bonding scene, these two have nice chemistry.
The market scene is nice, but has real filmed using covid safe protocols vibes. It’s begging for a proper song and dance sequence.
Ariel has never been to the surface, but can pick out star constellations?
The on land half of the film is overall more successful than the undersea half.
Tumblr media
Look. It’s fine. A compelling central performance from Halle Bailey, and once you get over the terrible cgi there are things to enjoy.
But it falls into the trap of much of Disney’s live action output - on one level it tries to add to the story, but on the other it’s slavishly devoted to recreating iconic scenes and lines, except most of the time they just don’t translate to live action, or the original voice performance/line reading was so strong tweaking it comes across as lacklustre.
Tumblr media
I really wish this had been in the vein of the live action Cinderella and The Jungle Book - inspired by the original animated film but creating their own aesthetic/take/interpretation. There’s a lot to mine in the story of The Little Mermaid, and there was almost the attempt here by making more of the land/sea old world/new world conflict but ultimately very little is done with it.

so. i saw it. tears were shed. MANY TEARS (tlm was my favourite movie as a kid, wore the VHS out so much we had 3 copies of it) here's my quick hot takes:
Eric, i loved him. but the man had zero thoughts behind them eyes - himbo vibes were apparent
HALLE WAS BORN TO PLAY ARIEL. Her performance was something very special. She brought maturity and sass along with innocence and sweetness, she was breathtaking
ngl i had high blood pressure during the gigantic angry ursula moment. that was lowkey terrifying
VANESSA. My little gay heart was booming. I can't even describe how much i loved her
ariel and eric???? literal angels who are made for each other???
the intro alone gets a 10/10 from me. the slow shots of the waves, the luminosity of the sea spray, THE HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON QUOTE OOOOF *CHEFS KISS*
lowkey a little disappointed ' les poissons ' wasn't included :(
when i left the cinema?? can you believe the coincidence of leaving the cinema to find the full moon a blazing golden glow over the ocean?? the vibes oh my god. magical end to the day

How was your first experience with The locked tomb? Like how did you get so interested in those books?
finding the books was like finding something that felt like it was written specifically for me. this series is an amalgamation of everything i love:
- butch lesbians, a group that is woefully underrepresented in literature & also so so so deserving of being written about
- transcendental love. love so strong that it refuses to let death come between those who love each other.
-some of the most multi-faceted characters i’ve ever come across in fiction. the books can barely contain them
- copious allusions to ancient greek and roman texts and mythology (my minor in university)
- dozens of english literature allusions (my other minor in university). i love how diverse they are. the author quotes classics like edgar allan poe, hans christian anderson, oscar wilde, and andrew marvell. but at the same time there are sly little references to modern literature like twilight, the secret history, and a wrinkle in time
-bad memes.

KinnPorsche Week 2022- Day 3: Favorite Couple
I did you a bit of a favor today and chose not to write a full thesis and I MADE YOU SOMETHING! (I don't know that it should be called fanart; I'm an internet old and I would just categorize it as a photo manip, but idk.)
Tumblr media
So clearly, my chosen couple for this is Kim x Chay. I 'm not going to say they're the best couple, and technically, by the end of season one, they're not really a couple anymore, but their story just really hits me. It hits me because for both of them it's their first love. Like, there is an age difference there (of about 4 years I'm guessing) and initially I think we assume that because Kim is older, more worldly, he would have experienced love before, but I don't think that's true. I think Kim has had romantic/sexual relationships, but those don't have to involve love. I think due to his upbringing he would reflexively keep people at a distance, and I especially think he would avoid even the possibility of a true connection after Kinn's experience with Tawan. (I have my own headcanons about Kim's feelings being used against him by his father, and how his past has affected him, but I won't get into those here.) I think the lyrics for Why Don't You Stay pretty clearly express this as well:
All this time I sink, drowning like a stone - Tryna close my eyes, shut my ears on this throne - Losing my way home, then you came along - Everywhere we are, felt like where I belong - Lost in your eyes there was no place I could hide - Take me inside and let me live in your mind - No pain tonight, this place is reserved for only you and I - 'Cause I wanna stay on your side - Even if the world come crashing down tonight, we'll be fine - Hold me close and we'll just leave it all behind - Why don't you stay
My point is that, we are watching two people truly fall in love for the first time with Kim and Chay, and it's unique from the other couples of the series because Chay is so unguarded. And you're rooting for them, and Chay is this adorable piece of sentient sunshine and Kim has always felt like he's drowning in darkness and he's desperate for that light. And you know Chay is lonely, and you know Kim is lonely and you just want them to feel seen, and heard, and important, just for being who they are. So as noted in the quote in the picture, with first love you open yourself more than any other time. Because at that point you've never been hurt by a romantic partner, you've never experienced that loss, so you don't hold back the way you do every future time. And this type of love is so wonderfully portrayed in the series. Like it's heartbreaking to watch, not because you know they won't work, but just because we're all watching this knowing that first loves so rarely turn into only loves. Like, we kind of know the likely ending, but we're still hoping so hard.
I also really love the connection with music for them. There's a quote "where words fail, music speaks" (Hans Christian Anderson, apparently, who would have thought) and that's definitely a central theme in their love story. Chay's first connection to Kim is through his music, and, yes there's the fanboy aspect, but as Kim can't help but open up, Chay's feelings clearly become more than just idol worship. Like, yes without a full understanding of who Kim is, there's no possibility of a workable relationship, but my point is that by episode 12 Chay's feelings were definitely about more than just 'loving his music idol.' (gif credit to : julielilac )
Tumblr media
And then we have Kim, who's probably dealing with someone for the first time who has a genuine interest in him as a person. He's literally spent his entire life being used as a pawn, being seen only as his name, a representative of his family, and then as WiK he's in this new position where he's more a product than a person. And remember that music connection; Chay loves the emotions in Kim's music, and he wants to know the person who made it. It's not just about WiK being famous. Of course Kim would find it incredibly hard to turn away from someone who SEES him, who WANTS to see him.
Watching Kim go through those moments over and over again where he's telling himself 'the best thing for Chay is for me to go', and warring with his heart because he doesn't want that. And like his siblings, he's never had the opportunity or ability to just allow himself to have something that's just for him.
Tumblr media
I also do really like the creative decision of the show to present the depth of the relationship after it's already over. Like, you're watching these sweet moments for 7 episodes and then those last two where you fully get a glimpse of just how deep their connection had become, and your heart's broken all over again. It's just so well done.
I'm gonna stop here, because I should, and continuing on is just going to turn into character profiles, and that's not what this post is about. Special thanks to Jeff and Barcode for acting absolutely beautifully in this show. Absolutely amazing work.
Also, if you'd like maybe some insight into how I see Kim and this particular love story, I do have a songfic up (link). I'm working on a second chapter from Chay's perspective, but spending several hours a day writing these KP week posts is slowing me down a little.

Bubble (Review) – Beautiful but Shallow
Tumblr media
Source: Bubble (2021)
By: Beata Garrett | @zhongxia246
Five years ago, the world was filled with bubbles. As the epicenter of the First Bubble, Tokyo received the worst of it as one exploded, devastating the city. Tokyo was abandoned, but “orphans of the Bubble Fall” took advantage of the ruined city to move in. One of these orphans, HIbiki, often hears singing from the tower where the blast originated. When he explores the tower one day to find the source, he’s injured and rescued by a bubble, which takes on the form of a human girl. She’s named “Uta” and the two begin a relationship that changes them both for the better.
Bubble opens by setting up a colorful but dangerous world for these kids as we watch them parkour over the ruins of buildings and city structures. It’s striking and one of the best parts of the entire movie as the action switches from relaxing to exciting. The other elements; plot, characters, and romance don’t hold a candle to these parkour scenes so I highly recommend going into this movie not expecting much substance in those areas.
[Editor’s Note: Please assume from this point forward that everything–quotes, images, and summaries–in this post, unless cited otherwise, comes directly from Bubble (2022). This post also goes into in-depth spoilers for the movie. Thank you.]
Tumblr media
Besides the parkour, I love how bizarre Bubble can be at times. The gangs of kids competing for resources isn’t taken too seriously and the background characters made me laugh a few times like Lobster Man. The first half of the movie is strongest for these reasons and before the romance takes a tragic and banal turn in the second half.
I also enjoyed how the male lead, Hibiki, is introduced as a very cool guy, but also has layers to him. He does have a character arc of sorts as he has to learn to bond with his team and trust them.
It’s heavily implied that part of this isolation may be because Hibiki’s on the autistic spectrum. When he reveals his story to Uta, it’s shown that he’s always struggled with hypersensitivity issues pertaining to sound. When the bubble hit Tokyo, he was under the care of a facility with many other kids similar to him. There are other disabilities represented too, like the character of Shin, one of the only adults in Tokyo that acts as a referee for the parkour games. While the movie doesn’t get into much detail about them, I think it’s refreshing to see casual representation in this way.
I think Bubble does a good job of taking inspiration from “The Little Mermaid,” a fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Uta is able to speak and learns to communicate with Hibiki, but their differences are still shown in how she begins turning into bubbles whenever she touches him. There’s a poignant moment when she watches someone else hug him and realize she will never be able to do that.
The montage of the two getting to know one another and doing parkour together was very wholesome. It said a lot about how close the two had gotten and was visually stunning. However, the shift into the second hour of the story reveals how hollow their relationship still was as the story told us they had gotten close but not shown them bonding over anything else except parkour. I strongly think the movie shouldn’t have tried to get serious and attempt the same tragic ending as the original fairy tale.
The original ending of Anderson’s fairy tale is much more somber than the Disney version. The mermaid doesn’t win the prince’s heart, but is given the opportunity to return to the sea if she kills him. Instead, she flings the knife away and turns into bubbles. Even in death, she’s not given complete peace as she’s told that she may float to heaven after three hundred years.
Tumblr media
Bubble already had a clever twist on the fairy tale that gave the mermaid more agency, so the ending feels like a slap in the face to this. It’s revealed the Bubble Fall was caused in part by Uta and she ends up sacrificing her life to stop the second collapse.
Throughout the movie, the idea of circularity and spirals are brought up. The nature of creation and destruction being two sides of the coin is shown through small things like the growth and decay of plants and bigger ones like space. Uta’s sacrifice is meant to represent this circularity as only a great sacrifice can lead to great peace. It’s a moving attempt, but it comes off as rather shallow because she hasn’t received enough development by this point. It’s also very clear she’s sacrificing herself for Hibiki, the prince, which is…not great.
Tumblr media
Personally, Bubble’s ending hits one of my biggest gripes with stories that have characters sacrificing themselves. Especially when they are girls and women. Frankly, I think one person sacrificing their life is a boring solution to a problem that’s presented. While humans can be incredibly altruistic, one sacrifice doesn’t solve problems and it often takes away from the importance of communal support, sacrifice, and the complexity of solving social issues.
It may sound like I’m asking too much from a movie about kids doing parkour, but silly movies can have good writing, too. They can be much stronger for it and, I would argue, Bubble made the choice to have a serious ending itself.
As I was watching the movie, I was reminded of Weathering with You. I find the ending to that movie very interesting in comparison to Bubble as the two share many similarities. However, Makoto Shinkai’s movie succeeds more in nailing the idea of a hopeful apocalypse by having the kids at the end of it refuse to sacrifice themselves. Perhaps that analysis is for another post.
Tumblr media
Overall, Bubble is a movie that’s very easy on the eyes and which you can get the most out of through a big screen. I found myself drifting and getting bored after the first half as the action took a break to focus on more serious aspects of the story. I admire its attempt to keep true to the origins of “The Little Mermaid,” and it could’ve been done much better. However, I don’t feel like I wasted my time and enjoyed the movie for what it was.

Pageless Fairytale
'Where roses deck the flowery vale, There, Infant Jesus, we thee hail!'
Quote from the tale Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson
Tumblr media
"The Snow Queen sat in the very middle of it when she sat at home"
In the digital age, the way we access and consume content has been revolutionized. Knowledge and literature are now more widely available, more reasonably priced, and more participatory than ever before thanks to digital publication and eBooks becoming standard. Amid this technological shift, classic stories, like "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen, continue to hold a special place in the hearts of the readers as the themes of the tale remains relevant. In this blog post, we will explore how these timeless tales maintain their relevance in the digital age.
There are 4 main reasons on why classic stories remain relevant in the digital era:
Knowledge Accessibility
Affordability and Convenience
Revolutionized Reading Experience
Shaping the Publishing Future
The digital age has brought about a democratization of knowledge. Classic stories are no longer confined to dusty shelves or expensive hardcovers. Instead, they are available at the touch of a button, downloadable on eReaders, tablets, and even smartphones. This accessibility ensures that readers from all walks of life, regardless of location or financial means, can enjoy these literary treasures. "The Snow Queen" is just a click away, allowing anyone to embark on Gerda's heroic journey on saving Kay.
When it comes to the affordability and convenience, Digital publishing has made reading more affordable and convenient. . No longer do readers need to invest in expensive printed editions. Most classic stories, including "The Snow Queen," are available for free or at a minimal cost in the digital realm. Moreover, eBooks are portable, lightweight, and can store entire libraries, making it easier for readers to carry their favorite stories with them, opening up opportunities to read in waiting rooms, during commutes, or while traveling.
A new world was introduced to readers as the digitalized version of books were introduced. The advancement in technology enhanced the reading experience of the readers. EBooks can include interactive elements, such as hyperlinks, multimedia, and annotations, which deepen the understanding of classic stories. For instance, readers exploring "The Snow Queen" can easily look up related articles, illustrations, or even engage in discussions about the tale. This interactivity fosters a more engaging and enriching reading experience.
Lastly, Digital publishing and eBooks have played a pivotal role in shaping the future of the publishing industry. They offer a platform for both established and emerging authors to share their work with a global audience. Through self-publishing and online platforms, writers can tap into the digital age's vast potential and reach a readership that was once out of their grasp. This revolution in publishing ensures the creation of new classic stories that will be cherished in the years to come.
Tumblr media
While digital publishing has brought about numerous advantages, it has also introduced certain challenges that are worth addressing, including information overload and the potential loss of the traditional reading experience:
The outstanding variety of books, articles, and online information available to readers in the digital era may create a dichotomy of choice and distraction. Reading comprehension suffers when readers transition between tasks while utilizing digital devices, which frequently multitask. A focused reading experience might also be hampered by social media and email notifications. Digital formats also promote skimming and rapid scanning, which discourages in-depth reading and interaction with classic works like "The Snow Queen."
Digital book formats lack the tactile and sensory experience that physical books provide, which causes physical pain and digital tiredness. Some readers may be discouraged from adopting digital publishing since prolonged screen time for reading might induce eye strain and headaches. Additionally, some digital platforms include pop-up adverts that interrupt the reading flow, lowering the immersive experience and interfering with the flow of the story. Therefore, readers who embrace digital publication may find it difficult to limit their screen time.
In conclusion, digital publication has a variety of accessibility and convenience benefits, but it also has drawbacks including information overload and the possible destruction of the conventional reading experience. By bringing these issues to readers' attention and offering solutions, authors may empower readers to make wise decisions about how they interact with great works of literature in the digital age, preserving the purpose and pleasure of reading.
